BREAKING NEWS : BLOOM IS CHANGING 1. On Your Doorstep

2. Don’t panic - Get Your Bloom Locally...

It’s two years since we launched Bloom. We’ve grown and changed significantly over that time and the support from local businesses and you the reader has been a fantastic inspiration and motivation. It’s why we started in the first place; to showcase the community. It’s hard work and we are a very small operation but we want to grow further and reach even more people. Distribution through the letterboxes is an absolute must but we are changing things slightly. Previously you have received the magazine every month and Bloom will indeed continue as a monthly publication, however you will now receive it every other month. So the next time you hear Bloom drop on the door mat will be February, April, June and so on. In the months in between when you don’t get Bloom, we will be delivering the magazine to a brand new set of homes in East Belfast who have never received it through their letterbox which means we are reaching twice as many people in the community in the space of 8-9 weeks. This is very important for us to get the message out there to more and more people and for local businesses to share their message too.We couldn’t have got this far without your support so we hope our new plan works for you.

Don’t worry, because in the month you dont get Bloom delivered to you, we have outlined below our local network of stockists who have kindly agreed to make the magazine available for you to pick up. We encourage you to call in to the one handiest to you or handy to where you shop. Pick up your copy there and maybe stay and have a coffee, buy something and continue our goal of shopping local. PLUS we have just confirmed that Tesco Knocknagoney have kindly agreed to stock Bloom beneath their community board on the way out past the tills which is amazing news! We thank them for believing in Bloom and what we are trying to do.

3. New Website www.bloommagazine.co.uk Or you can read a version of the magazine online via our brand spanking new website! Yes in another bombshell of news we have now launched a fantastic new user friendly website which will contain each edition and will grow over time. We hope you like it. We’re very excited by it and we thank brandingbay.com for all their hard work in helping us put it together. We don’t want you to feel abandoned in the intervening months of receiving Bloom because you have been a tremendous support from day one, so we have provided you not only with our wonderful stockists to enable you to collect the magazine on your travels but also the shiny new and unique platform that is our website to read the latest bits and bobs in the comfort of your home, from your mobile or on your tablet.

The Art of Pizza making at Greens Ballyhackamore The first thing you notice when you enter Greens Pizza Restaurant at Ballyhackamore is the colourful range of paintings of Penguin Books covers filling the walls. Art plays a big part in the lives of Greens owners Manus McConn and William Clark who also own Greens Pizzeria on the Lisburn Road and Conor Café on the Stranmillis Road. The paintings are the work of their close friend, celebrated Belfastbased artist Neil Shawcross and they add a lot to the atmosphere of this bustling restaurant. But, as well as the artwork, it is the delicious pizza, pasta and famous Dragon’s Tongue Bread that has drawn the crowds to Greens since it opened in Ballyhackamore in February. The new restaurant created 25 jobs and the partners are delighted that the people of East Belfast and beyond have embraced their establishment. Mr McConn added: “Both William and I are passionate about art and pizza and we want our customers to enjoy their food in a space that is colourful, stimulating and adds to the whole experience.” Greens Pizza opens every day from 12noon to 10.30pm. A selection of wines, beers and cocktails are available to enjoy with the fine food. The new Pizzeria is located at 283-285 Upper Newtownards Road, BT4 3JH. We opted for a Beef & Pork Chimichanga. The meat was melt in your mouth and was one of the tastiest things I’ve ever had! We also had rack of ribs. I’m not usually a fan of ribs because they are so messy and find there’s not much meat on them for all the hard work! These were in a different league. The meat just fell of the bone and again, delicious! We had a side dish of sweet potatoes fries which were new to me and will definitely be having again. 3. Bake the cookies on a baking sheet lined with wax (greaseproof) paper for about 8–10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove the cookies from the oven and place them on a wire rack. Use the plastic drinking straw to repierce the holes if they have closed up during cooking. Leave the cookies to cool. Decorate each cookie with icing as desired. Cut pieces of ribbon and ric rac braid, approximately 8in (20cm) long, and thread them through the holes in each cookie. Tie in a knot and trim the ribbon ends diagonally using scissors to stop them fraying.

BALLYHACKAMORE LIBRARY REOPENS! After seven weeks closure for redecoration, Ballyhackamore library is open! At the heart of Ballyhackamore village the library offers free membership for all age groups and a wide range of activities from Bedtime stories to Got It? computer sessions. The library has been here for 21 years now and has become a tremendous focus for the local community. Previously it had been located up at the Knock lights close to SD Bells and then at the current site in a mobile before the new building took shape. It’s a thriving and very busy branch which is well used by the community and local business with meeting rooms available for hire. Branch Manager Maureen King shares the news on whats in store when you visit. “Our regulars were very pleased to see the library back and inside there are some fantastic transformations. New flooring has been installed. The wooden tongue and groove ceiling (which previously led to people calling it an upside down boat!) has been painted white which has made a huge difference to the light in the space. The end wall of brick has been plastered and painted a neutral colour and we will be showcasing art there which will be a lovely feature. We have rearranged the shelving and stock to create a more user friendly layout. All the classes and events are back up and running. It’s a free service here and we would like to welcome both old and new visitors to see the new library and what we have to offer:” s what on?

east belfast heritage

The chronicles of east belfast continue... Aidan Campbell’s historical exploration of East Belfast continues unabated as he unveils his 8th and 9th titles; Belmont & Sydenham. Aidan has been a volunteer at Marie Curie Cancer Care for 13 years and to date book sales have raised over £100,000 for the charity. We caught up with Aidan to get the rundown on what’s in the new books and get an understanding of the meticulous work he puts into every single page.

Victoria Park Belfast fountain 1952

• Sydenham Aidan Campbell’s 8th local history book covering the development East Belfast is ‘Sydenham’. The journey traverses the Holywood Road which begins at Holywood Arches, passes the Strand cinema, Gelston’s Corner, Park Avenue Hotel, St Mark’s Church, Ashfield, Inverary, Marmont and finishes at Knocknagoney. There are also detours examining the development of the Connsbrook Avenue area,Victoria Park and the Sydenham Bypass. The journey looks at the lives of people who were connected with the area plus churches, schools, houses, roads, businesses, shops, sports clubs and social organisations. 32 bloommagazine.co.uk

Sydenham School 1954

The name Sydenham only came into use in the 1850s and unlike other areas of East Belfast such as Ballymacarrett, Knock and Cregagh (which are all townlands) the name does not relate to a physical geographical feature or historical background. A townland was the smallest geographical division of land in Ireland dating back hundred’s of years. There are approximately 9,000 townlands in NI. By 1972 the Post Office decided townlands were to be regarded as ‘superflous information’ in a postal address. The name of the fashionable London suburb of ‘Sydenham’ was chosen by James Entwhistle, who lived at a house called ‘Aspenville’ on Holywood Road near Sydenham Avenue.

He was a builder and developed much of Sydenham as a residential area. It had become fashionable in Belfast during the Victorian period to adopt the names of rather grand British locations such as Balmoral, Kensington, Sandown and Wandsworth because they conferred a sense of grandeur to a neighbourhood. In 1858 the wealthy tobacco merchant Thomas McClure purchased the townlands of Strandtown and Ballymaghan from the Earl Ranfurley. He is credited with the improvement and development of much of the area, including the road network. He later became the proprietor of the townland of Ballycloughan and Belmont House, which is now the site of Campbell College.

Glenmachan 1863

• belmont ‘Belmont’ is Aidan’s 9th local history book on East Belfast. The narrative of ‘Belmont’ takes the form of a journey along Belmont Road from Gelston’s Corner, past Clonallon Gardens, Belmont Presbyterian Church, Circular Road, Ormiston, Campbell College to Massey Avenue and the back gates of Stormont Parliament Buildings. There are detours taking in Glenmachan, the Old Holywood Road and Redburn. The area around Gelston’s Corner might be more properly known by its original name of ‘Strandtown’ which is the old townland name for the area that has become known for various businesses and retail premises. Whilst the Sydenham area around Connsbrook Avenue may be characterised by many small streets containing long rows of

terraced housing which were often the homes of people who worked in the industrial factories of Belfast including the shipyard, ropeworks, linen mills and engineering works, the Belmont area on the higher ground contained the estates and demesne’s of wealthy business owners. The wealthy people of Belfast owned numerous properties in the centre of town during the 19th century but as the population of the city grew they moved out helped by the development of transport infrastructure such as railways and tramways. The gentrification of Belfast’s rural fringe had its beginnings in the mideighteenth century when the well drained lands of the County Down side of the Lagan Valley influenced the siting of large houses or mansions with tree-lined demesnes. Developers sensibly avoided low-

lying land which might be subject to flooding. Many of these estates were funded from the profits of banking, whiskey distilling, cotton and linen manufacture, shipbuilding and ancillary industries which generated business for foundries, engineering works and rope manufactories.

The books retail at £10 each and are available from Hillmount Garden Centre, Gilnahirk and Marie Curie Hospice. previous titles include Beaconsfield, Knock, Cherryvalley, Gilnahirk, Castlereagh, Cregagh and Stormont

Thrifty festive sparkle So, it’s December then (my didn’t that come upon us quickly) and that means lots of festive sparkle! From the twinkling lights and baubles on our Christmas trees to the wrapping on the gifts beneath, we love to balance the dark days of winter with a little glitter and gleam.

Subtle Sumptuous Sparkle

Autograph jumper, £3.00, Marie Curie, Ballyhackamore

That’s obviously what was on my mind as I wandered through the local charity shops in the last few weeks. The rails have been full of chunky knitwear but it was this M&S Autograph jumper that caught my eye in Marie Curie. I’m not one for over-doing the sequins at this time of year, so this jumper is the perfect compromise - cosy and warm, with just a hint of sparkle.

Amazing Handbag Alert!

VINT A FIND GE >>>

I’m not sure I could have planned a more perfect accessory to this jumper than the amazing vintage bag I found in Re:Store. Twitter friends will know only too well just how partial I am to a leather ‘Kelly’ style bag and I can spot one at 1,000 paces. I shrieked with delight when I saw this lovely vintage item on the shelf - I’m sure the shop assistant was mildly amused! The brass detail that frames the outside of it is really unusual and despite having a reasonably sized (!!) collection of vintage bags, I don’t have one like this. It’s not just a great charity shop find, but it will be a talking point among my friends too.

Vintage Riviera handbag, £2.50, Re:Store, Newtownards Road

Clip Clip Hooray!

Vintage scarf clip, £0.50, Marie Curie, Belmont Road

My final nod to twinkle and sparkle this month is this adorable scarf clip. Winter is the season of accessories - gloves, hats and scarves to name a few of my favourites. A cute scarf can only be improved by a clip or brooch and I was delighted to find this vintage beauty for the princely sum of 50p in Marie Curie. Its autumnal colours and gold setting will brighten up a few scarves in my wardrobe.

You still have a few Christmas shopping weeks to go, so pop into your East Belfast charity shops to pick up some cards, to find a unique item for a friend or indeed to buy a thrifty treat for yourself. Your local charities will be delighted to see you. All that’s left for me to do is wish you a very happy, safe and sparkly festive season! 40 bloommagazine.co.uk

Keep Your Feet Safe at the Gym in the New Year Don’t let foot injuries keep you from your fitness resolutions, keep your feet in tip-top shape. Duncan Burnside, Lead Podiatrist/owner of Body and Sole offers tips for foot safety while at the gym. Start new workouts gradually Increase your stamina and the length of your workouts gradually to avoid overuse injuries such as stress fractures or tendon strains and sprains. Stretching your muscles before and after workouts also helps prevent these types of injuries. If you do feel you’ve sprained your ankle, be sure to seek treatment right away. Untreated or repeated ankle sprains may lead to chronic ankle instability, a condition that causes persistent pain and a ‘giving way’ of the ankle. Wear the right shoe and sock Wear well-fitting athletic shoes designed for the exercise or sport. Duncan suggests, shoes that don’t support the arch of the foot and provide cushion for the heel can cause heel pain (plantar fasciitis). Shoes that are too small can also cause a neuroma, or a thickening of the nerve tissue, in the foot and may require injections, 50 bloommagazine.co.uk

medication or physical therapy.Wearing cotton or non-slip socks are also key to help avoid painful blisters, which can become infected and cause more serious issues. Use good technique Improper exercise techniques can result in injury to the tendons or ligaments in your feet and ankles. Incorrect posture or misuse of exercise equipment can cause decreased stabilization in the foot and ankle, leading to joint sprains and muscle strains. Protect yourself from bacteria Sweaty shoes, public showers, exercise equipment and the pool floor at the gym are breeding grounds for fungus, viruses and bacteria, including drug-resistant strains like MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) which has become increasingly more common. Never go barefoot while in public areas; water shoes can

provide a great barrier between your feet and the wet surfaces. Award g winnin ct! je o r p local

Fan of the cloth What started out as a simple idea discussed over a cup of coffee, has led, 6 months later, to a thriving Cloth Nappy Library and a prestigious national award. Here’s the remarkable story... Since it was set up in March of this year, Cloth Nappy Library NI run by a group of dedicated mums for mums, has not only broken world records and received full backing from Stormont but can now add award winner to their list of achievements. Cloth Nappy Library NI received a Highly Commended award for Waste Reduction Project of the Year at the prestigious UTV Business Eye Awards, held at the Culloden Estate and Spa, Holywood. Speaking about the evening, Belfast Cloth Champion, Andrea O’Brien added “To even be shortlisted was an award in itself, however to be recognised amongst the best in Business within Northern Ireland was like a dream come true. We are a not for profit organisation run solely by volunteers and this award demonstrates the hard work and commitment that the 54 bloommagazine.co.uk

mums on the team have put into the project, in their free time, for the advantage of others.” ‘There’s no doubt that cloth nappies are becoming increasingly popular with mums and dads today,’ Andrea added. ‘We’ve moved so far from the old, dated traditional view of cloth nappies to one which is now smart, comfy, easy on the eye and – above all else – great for the environment! The arrival of the library system means that parents can now benefit from all of the advantages of the cloth nappies AND do it without a large, initial outlay. The library service makes using reusable nappies easy on the purse – and the environment!’ In order to raise the profile of the Cloth Nappy Library, they were involved with European Week for Waste Reduction 16th-24th November. “We ran an event

every day during EWWR, so everyone across the province had an opportunity to pop along, ask questions and see the modern cloth nappy in real life. We also released our kits out for hire at a special discounted price over that week.” Cloth Nappy Library NI holds a Nappuccino on the third Tuesday of every month in Mookie World, Dondonald from 10am-12pm. This is an opportunity to have a look at the nappies on the market at the moment, and see how they work and also to meet other mums. If you are interested and want to find out more, you can contact them via their website www.clothnappylibraryni. com or the Cloth Nappy Library Facebook page, where all details of upcoming events can be found.
