You probably always see something new in Bloom every month. Yep, that’s right, we like to tinker. But our tinkering is all for a good cause, and that cause is you! Boke. Ha. No we do mean that. Unbelievably this is our 22nd edition now and it has come a long way. How the first issue even got out is beyond us. No one remembers anything from that night. No one speaks of it again. But we got there. And if you run your mince pie down the list of stuff down the right there, you’ll see a pretty diverse line up of features these days. We’re able to put this together because there are people out there doing some pretty amazing things in our community. So much so, that this is one of the biggest issues we’ve ever done. So when you line it up with the other 21 editions you’ve kept on the kitchen shelf (y’all do do that right?) you’ll find that the heaving collection might knock the toaster off the other end. Sorry about that. Enjoy!

THE GREEN TEAM Knockbreda Primary School is delighted to welcome the School’s Eco Council. Principal Pamela McKenna said, ‘The pupils will be working alongside staff to make sure our grounds are looking their best and to come up with ideas of how we can continue to promote the ‘Eco’ message throughout the school and the community. Our P1 children recently enjoyed a visit to our beautiful wildlife garden and had a good look in the pond to see what they could find. We are so lucky to have such wonderful grounds and we can’t wait to see what our Eco Council come up with to improve them even more.’ knockbredaps.co.uk Above:The The team team waste waste no no time time in in starting starting work! work! ‘Sydenham’ and ‘Belmont’ are the latest local history books covering areas of East Belfast by author Aidan Campbell telling how the area developed over the past 150 years or so. ‘Sydenham’ examines the development of the area from the Holywood Arches to Gelston’s Corner, Holywood Road, Connsbrook Avenue and Victoria Park. ‘Belmont’ looks at Belmont Road, Circular Road, Massey Avenue and Old Holywood Road. Aidan’s books take the form of a journey along an arterial route in East Belfast and examine how and when the area developed. What were the factors and people behind the transformation of a largely rural into an urban landscape? Aidan has previously published 7 East Belfast local history books entitled ‘Beaconsfield’, ‘Knock’, ‘Cherryvalley’, ‘Gilnahirk’, ‘Castlereagh’, ‘Cregagh’ and ‘Stormont’. He regularly gives illustrated talks to local groups and societies. The books retail at £10 each and are available from Hillmount Garden Centre, Gilnahirk and Marie Curie Hospice. Aidan has been a volunteer at Marie Curie Cancer Care for 13 years and to date book sales have raised over £100,000 which has been donated to the charity. There are more local history books in the pipeline including ‘Knock Revisited’, ‘Ballymacarrrett’ and ‘Newtownbreda’.

Sally Moore, who runs the group, says: ‘The run-up to Christmas is really busy and plays havoc with our regular routines with extra occasions like Halloween, and Christmas dos that can make it harder than usual to manage our weight. The aim is to show it’s possible to slim down with Slimming World whatever the time of year, Each week we help and support each other to cope with any potential pitfalls. vintage photo shoot

Local Creatives Doing Time...

Belfast milliner Nicola McKee got together with friends and colleagues for a photo shoot with a difference.

o

ur collaborative team from this photo-shoot have been friends for quite a number of years now,’ says Nicola, ‘having all started out businesses in and around the same time.We have worked on a number of photo-shoots together and earlier this year decided it was time we should work together again, but on a much grander scale.’ All the local creatives have their own unique, quirky styles that mesh together perfectly. In July they thought it would be a great opportunity to avail of the good weather and put together a photo-shoot in The Crumlin Road Gaol, the very first fashion photo-shoot of its kind to be held there. They set out to achieve a fantastic set of images and they weren’t wrong, we think that this is definitely going to generate a little buzz. ‘We all love the revival of the 1920s style that has been ever emerging through the likes of Downton and Gatsby, but wanted to use that era and put our own mark on it. We thought that a vintage styled shoot combined with the slightly haunting venue of the Gaol would be new, innovative and quite different to other photo shoots we have seen in Belfast. It was a great feeling to work with all local creatives again in an old but new and very exciting local venue,’ says Nicola The Gaol was opened up at 4am for the collective’s visit giving them time to set up for a diverse selection of shots planned throughout the morning before the tours arrived. ‘Our contact Judith and the staff The Gaol were absolutely fantastic opening up for us at that time of the morning. There was only myself and the photographer Michael Kerr there initially at the start of the morning setting up, it was a pretty eerie place at that time to say the least! Needless to say the shoot ran smoothly, and with our meticulous planning and with great help from the Gaol staff and we think we got a terrific result, hauntingly vintage bridalisque. ‘I thought it was imperative at such a challenging time to set an example that small businesses should stick together, support one another and back other local businesses. We had a great team and there will be a short promotional behind the scenes video released on youtube soon too.’

OIL BE BACK

fill up on savings with East belfast oil club Community Heating Oil Buying Clubs are an innovative way for everyone in the area to get their home heating oil at better prices. We speak to the man behind the Cregagh club, Raymond Gormley.

‘The Community Oil Buying Club that I am managing is concentrated in and around the Cregagh area,’ says Raymond, ‘but will be linking up oil orders with another oil buying club that is operating in and around the Ballyhackamore area.We are encouraging householders to prepare their homes for this winter by planning ahead and budgeting (by buying oil stamps or saving/borrowing from their local Credit Union) to get a fill of home heating oil before the cold snap arrives.’ Bryson Energy (part of the Bryson Charitable Group) received funding from the Oak Foundation to undertake a community oil brokering pilot scheme in East Belfast and in particular the Cregagh area was identified for this. Bryson Energy is working with a growing list of organisations to seek competitive rates from oil supplies based on group buying. This initiative is aimed at tackling fuel poverty in Belfast and is supported by a range of organisations including Cregagh Community Association, Castlereagh Borough Council and the Consumer Council. Those with smaller orders (300 litres) will be able to purchase oil at the same price per litre as the larger orders (900 litres) and enjoy potential savings of between £11 and £35 – based on similar schemes operating in NI. ahead and budgeting to get a fill of home heating oil before the cold snap arrives.

Membership is free and there is no obligation to order, those interested can simply call (Freephone) 0800 1422 867, text mobile 07516 717993 email rgormley@brysonenergy.org or visit www.brysonenergy.org If you are outside the Cregagh area but live in East Belfast/Dundonald there is another oil buying club that you can join, operated by Ross Brown. The steps to becoming a member of tHIS oil club are very simple : • Forms are available to download from the East Belfast Oil Club Facebook Page • Read the terms and conditions and fill in and return a registration form to: East Belfast Oil Club, Ballyhackamore Credit Union, 171-173 Newtownards Rd Belfast, County Antrim BT4 3HZ. *You must live in East Belfast/Dundonald to join this oil club • Place an order for the quantity you require before the next oil order deadline by: • Dropping an order form into East Belfast Oil Club, Ballyhackamore Credit Union, 171-173 Newtownards Rd Belfast, County Antrim BT4 3HZ • Emailing eastbelfastoilclub@gmail.com • Leaving a voicemail or text message on 07551 337183 ** Please note once orders are made they are considered binding ** • Once all the orders are collected the club call the different oil companies and negotiate the lowest possible price. They then call you to inform you of the delivery time, which company will be making the delivery and the total price. • You pay the oil distributor as normal before or on delivery. • The club is free to join and you get all the savings from being a member. • On the club’s first delivery, each of the members saved between £15 and £25 depending on the size of their order. When compared to the most expensive quote for 900 litres savings were as high as £60. 20 bloommagazine.co.uk

10 Ways to Cut your Heating Costs by thermal survey’s northern ireland With winter fast approaching, Bloom Magazine has teamed up with Thermal Survey’s NI, a firstof-its kind thermal imaging company which carries out surveys (using infrared thermography) on properties in a bid to illustrate where there is heat escaping from to lower fuel costs and reduce our carbon footprint. Check out these top ten do-it-yourself tips to reduce your heating costs by making your house as efficient as possible.

1

Your fireplace may look good and keep the room warm when lit, but when the fire is out close the damper or if it’s not in use buy a chimney balloon to stop the draughts from the chimney.

2

With houses losing up to a third of their heat through the roof, loft insulation is a must, at least 300mm and don’t forget the loft hatch as well. (Grants are available with the Warm Homes Scheme to some people.)

3

Boilers need to be serviced regularly to make sure they keep their efficiency or if your boiler is old consider changing it to a condensing boiler.(there are boiler scrapage schemes available.)

4

Adjusting the thermostat down by even 1 degree can make a good saving on heating bills

5

Draughts and windows and doors can rob a house of its heat, but they can be quick and cheap to fix.

6

Shop around for your oil or gas, there are different suppliers so make sure you are getting the best value.

7

Wrap the hot water tank, a standard jacket can reduce heat loss by 75%.

8

Maximise your radiator efficiency by making sure they are bled of air. Foil behind a radiator can help reflect heat into a room and remember to turn down the thermostat in unused rooms.

9

Windows are a major source of heat loss, so if you can’t stretch to the latest gas filled double glazing, there are thermal lined blinds and curtains that help with heat loss.

10

Insulate wall cavities. Around 33% of the heat lost in an uninsulated house is through the walls. You could save around £120 on energy bills each year by insulating your wall cavities. It also creates an even temperature in your home.

A Thermal Imaging Survey of your property shows exactly where heat and energy are being lost and can also identify missing insulation and building defects in the property structure that aren’t visible to the human eye. Surveys are available from £199 from Thermal Surveys NI, telephone 0845 0948770, www.thermalsurveysni.com 22 bloommagazine.co.uk

Girl Loves Vintage BLOG: www.girlovesvintage.tumblr.com TWITTER: @GirLovesVintage ...at the time of writing it’s only 61 days until Christmas…and counting! Buying presents often gets people in a panic but have you ever thought about doing some festive shopping in your local charity shop? It’s a great way to find something unique and to keep the budget tight. Lots of people make their annual charity donation by buying Christmas cards but there’s so much more on offer if you have a look.

YIKES!

Girls in the Snood

New Look snood, £3, Marie Curie, Ballyhackamore

Picture Perfect

Not everyone likes to buy pre-loved goods for themselves or others but charity shops often carry a range of brand new items too. I bought a gorgeous mohair snood from Marie Curie for £3, with its original tags still on. It’s beautifully soft and in this season’s must-have colour, pink! It’s a perfect festive treat.

Stationery is a Christmas staple too, from diaries and notebooks to calendars and pens. This cute photo album by Paperchase was only£1 from the NI Hospice shop, again brand new in it’s original packaging. It would make a perfect stocking-filler or Secret Santa gift.

Paperchase photo album, £1, NI Hospice, Ballyhackamore

A Novel Idea And of course Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a book under the tree. The War on Want store in Ballyhackamore is a treasure trove where I found a beautifully illustrated hardback of Lark Rise to Candleford for £2. It’s in wonderful vintage condition and I plan to pass this on to a friend who I know will appreciate its loveliness. Lots of charity bookshops have a ‘nearly new’ display at this time of year where they market their best books as gifts - look out for these gems. Lark Rise to Candleford book, £2, War on Want, Ballyhackamore

COMPETITION! One lucky charity shop fan will win the cute mohair snood I’ve featured this week. All you need to do is tweet me at @GirLovesVintage with a picture of your best charity shop find and I’ll pick my favourite. Winner announced in the next edition of Bloom! 26 bloommagazine.co.uk

This year, I’m going to be doing a charity shop Secret Santa with some friends. I hope I’ve inspired you to try something similar!

Barbacoa Beef Cheeks Serves 4 1 kg beef cheeks, trimmed 1 ancho chilli 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1 tbsp peanut butter 1 tsp instant espresso powder 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or Irish rapeseed oil 2 tbsp Highbank apple syrup or maple syrup or honey 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 handful coriander, chopped 1 teaspoon salt 250 ml chicken stock 4 limes To serve: 2 avocados, peeled and sliced (or guacamole)

4 wraps or tortillas roasted tomato salsa fresh coriander sour cream grated cheese — a strongly flavoured Cheddar Remove the stem and seeds from the ancho chilli, chop it roughly and put it in a little warm water for a few minutes to rehydrate. Blend the chilli (and its water), garlic, peanut butter, espresso powder, 2 tablespoons of the oil, syrup, cumin, paprika, coriander and salt into a paste. Marinate the beef cheeks in the paste for a few hours, preferably overnight, in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 140° C/fan 120° C/gas mark 1½. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a flameproof casserole dish and brown the cheeks on both sides. Don’t move the cheeks around too

much when you’re browning them — the less they move, the more colour and flavour they’ll pick up. Pour the rest of the marinade into the pan with the stock, then squeeze in the juice of 3 limes. Put the lid on and place in the oven for about 3½ hours, turning the cheeks once or twice while they cook. If the liquid dries up, add a little more stock. By now the cheeks should be very tender. Pull them apart with two forks and mix with the juices in the pan. Add a squeeze of lime to taste, and a touch more syrup if you like. Serve the barbacoa in a wrap or corn tortilla with guacamole or slices of avocado, roasted tomato salsa, sour cream, a sprinkling of fresh coriander and grated cheese.

Gustav Wilhelm Wolff

advertising feature

An East Belfast MP at the heart of UK Politics Gustav Wilhelm Wolff may have been born in Hamburg, but it was East Belfast that he loved most dearly. He wrote the following lines about his adopted home: “You may talk of your Edinburgh and the beauties of Perth And all the large cities famed on the earth, But give me my house, though it be in a garret, In the pleasant surroundings of Ballymacarrett.” The apprentice ship-builder eventually became Sir Edward Harland’s partner and his name is synonymous with the world famous yard at Queen’s Island. However he was also one of Belfast’s great parliamentarians, serving faithfully as the Conservative MP for East Belfast for eighteen years, from 1892. Wolff was an energetic voice for his constituency, right at the heart of UK politics. He spoke extensively in the House of Commons, often to champion the economic interests of Belfast, which was, at the time, a powerhouse of the British Empire. 44 bloommagazine.co.uk

His time in Parliament coincided with a turbulent period of Irish history, spanning the Home Rule crisis, the First World War and the Irish War of Independence, which culminated in the partition of Ireland and the creation of Northern Ireland. Wolff also found time to invest in local charities and in particular the Ulster Hospital for Women and Children. He was a politician who was always intimately involved in the life of his city, as well as the great political issues affecting the nation. The period during which Gustav Wolff represented East Belfast so diligently may now seem like a long time ago. However, the constituency still needs representatives who aspire to create normal politics and build a vibrant economy. Today, a centre-right party, called the NI Conservatives, are looking to put East Belfast back at the

heart of UK politics. They’re a local organisation, made up of local people, but they’re also a full part of the Conservative Party and have the full backing of David Cameron, who recently stressed his commitment to having more and more representatives from Northern Ireland, at a meeting at the Park Avenue Hotel. The NI Conservatives in East Belfast will be standing candidates at forthcoming local elections, they’ll also have a candidate in the European election and they’ll be trying to win seats at Stormont and at Westminster. They’d love to have as many people as possible involved in their campaign, so that our constituency can again have representatives like Gustav Wolff, fighting its cause at council, in the Assembly or at Parliament. info@ eastbelfastconservatives.com Tel: 028 9185 9073.

Mccallum’s butchers quality assured

r McCallum senior opened ‘M his shop on the Woodstock

Road in 1966’, says Donald who runs McCallum’s Butchers with his brother Neil.‘We started working for my father after school from 14 years of age. When we turned 16, we left school and worked for a year learning butchery skills before then coming into my fathers shop on Woodstock Road.’ Back then the butcher business not only in Belfast but nationwide was very different. When the brothers started there was in the region of 20 butchers and pork shops on the Woodstock Road alone, now there are four.‘It’s an uphill struggle nowadays with the supermarkets,’ says Donald,‘because it seems to be the trend now for people to go to these places and get their shopping all under the one roof, hence the decline in the number of butchers shops. But it’s not only butchers shops, you just have to look at the number of vacant shops we have in Belfast.’

46 bloommagazine.co.uk

Such is the extent of the new shopping environment, McCallum’s offer the customer much more than meat.‘We go to the vegetable market every Tuesday and Thursday to buy fresh vegetables,’ says Neil, ‘and we cut them and pack them on our premises. We also stock dairy, groceries and cooked meats. We can source any cut the customer needs, like venison, 21 day matured rib roast, t bone and sirloin. You can order anything you like but nowadays there is not as much demand for the freezer packs. Used to be you had customers ordering hindquarters and forequarters of beef, but with the recession that doesn’t seem to happen anymore probably due to the price of beef.’ All the beef is labelled and from the quality assured scheme so shopping local from your trusted butcher guarantees you that level of excellence. And as a result, McCallum’s have a tremendous

Meet the brothers who run one of the most established butchers in East Belfast; McCallum’s. amount of support from the community.‘We have loads of loyal customers and some whose generations of families support us which is fantastic and we thank every one of them. The whole trend of cooking has changed as well, a lot of the younger generation seem to rely on convenience foods but they just need to know the quality available from their local butcher and how easy it is to make a fantastic meal from simple, quality ingredients such as the selection of meat we offer. We have excellent value, flexible meat packs on offer all year round starting at just £10.99 and with the festive season almost upon us, we have our two Christmas special packs priced at £59.99 & £39.99 which are great for families.’ 326 BEERSBRIDGE ROAD TEL: 028 9045 7140 351 WOODSTOCK ROAD TEL: 028 9022 6211
