July & August 2013
Of course our cover image for the summer edition paints the picture of a wonderfully serene and tranquil summers day lounging in a picturesque meadow quaffing bubbly and eating nothing but the finest of culinary delights served from an ultra glamorous basket with more treats brimming over the edge. Of course in reality many of our picnics tell a different story. Where are the ham sarnies cut into triangles, the black currant drink that the kids spilt over the sausage rolls, the leaking ice box that ruined that “quiche’ someone knocked up, the wasp that’s been trying to get at the pear picking porky’s and the wee melters from across the way who keep kicking their football in your direction knocking over the last beer! Ah summer. You can’t whack it. We say bring it on. This is our July & August issue which contains all the info and local businesses you need over the next eight weeks or so. Again, a picnic basket full of bits and bobs going on over the next while to keep you busy. Thank you to all our advertisers and contributors and chiefly yourselves for your support. We’ll be back in September after the GLORIOUS summer we have ahead

‘The Larder’ Food Support
Belfast Lord Mayor, Alderman Gavin Robinson, goes out of office on a high with a visit to the top of the Harland & Wolff cranes. In one of his last engagements he gets to see a completely different view of the city.
Wandsworth Community Centre on Belmont
Church Road is looking for volunteers over 18 years old to get involved with this year’s summer scheme. The three week project starts on Monday 29 July and caters for 170 children aged four to 20. There are four age groups that you could work with and the programme runs throughout the day and evening time. They are particularly seeking volunteers who are available on Tues and Thurs over the weeks to help with day trips.
Picking up and sharing the inaugural Spirit of Belfast Award at the One City Conference were, from left, Kevin Gamble from Feile An Phobail and Maurice Kinkead from East Belfast Arts Festival. The award acknowledges the true character of Belfast and those groups who look out beyond their community to welcome their neighbours. This year’s East Belfast Festival will run 28th August–1st September. Visit East Belfast Arts Festival Facebook eastbelfastartsfestival.org 4 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
Back in January “The Larder” started in St Christopher’s Church, Mersey Street, at the entrance to the Oval. It is a food support idea for anyone who finds themselves in financial difficulties. In the first eight weeks food had be given to nearly forty people. How it works : 1. People who need food have to be referred to the larder. 2. If you lead a church, a community group, a local organisation, or you are a social worker or health professional and you know someone or a family who are reaching desperation please contact Adrian McCartney on 07970 626384 and give a name so that they can identify the person when he/ she arrives. They don’t need to know any details and they are not trying to follow these folks up in any way. That is your responsibility or the role of your organisation. They will simply provide the food. They try to give up to three days worth. 3. Send them down at the appropriate time or come yourself and take it to them. If they are unable to carry the food they will try to help them home. The larder is open every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm, Thursday from 8pm to 9pm at night, and Friday from 10a to 12pm. If an emergency occurs not at those times they will try to help. If you or your organisation would like to collect food, please deliver it at any of the times mentioned. Toiletries are also very well received.
Models including Sasha Jordan from Helen’s Bay, Nicole Sutton from Seahill, Nuala Meenehan from Holywood and Naoise Tan from Ballyhackamore strutted their stuff at the Ards Shopping Centre fashion show last Saturday. Hundreds of shoppers watched the shows throughout the day with fashion from ASDA, Exhibit, DV8 and Internacionale among others. Fashionista Cathy Martin from Helen’s Bay hosted the events, which included dancing kids from Newtownards.
East Belfast Mission (EBM) is seeking Children’s Volunteers to develop their children’s
programme “Fusion” in Skainos. Fusion is on Fridays from 6.30pm - 8.00pm for children in P1 - P7. They play games, make crafts and have fun. Through building relationships with their peers and with positive role models, children gain confidence and skills to help them succeed in the daily tasks of life. EBM is looking for people who are aged 18+ and who demonstrate a passion for inner city children as well as the enthusiasm and energy required to work with children. All relevant child protection and other training will be given. This role is subject to an Access NI check.
Connswater Greenway Earlier this year Maghera-based BSG Civil Engineering Ltd was appointed to deliver Victoria Park and Orangefield Park sections of the Connswater Community Greenway (CCG). These works include the creation of 3 kms of new paths, four new or improved bridges, flood alleviation measures, landscaping, and public realm work, and street furniture including new lighting. One of the key elements planned for Victoria Park is a new bridge link to Airport Road. This pedestrian bridge will take approximately four months to construct and will link east Belfast to Titanic Quarter and the National Cycle Network. The name of the bridge is currently under consideration and it is the CCG’s intention to seek public ideas and suggestions over the summer months. To find out how you can be involved go to www.communitygreenway.co.uk/namethebridge. To be kept up to date with CCG project news you can like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/connswatercommunitygreenway and/or follow them on Twitter @ConnswaterCG. We will also keep you posted on all the news as it happens. It was a big day for the everyone at McArthur Nursery School in East Belfast on 21st June when the end of year graduation ceremony took place. After a strawberries and cream reception and a few songs from the children, headmaster Eithne Daly began proceedings, handing the ceremonial duties to Alderman Jim Rodgers who congratulated every child and presented them with their certificate. A landmark day for parents, staff and the children, marking their next step onto “big school” after the summer break. www.bloommagazine.co.uk 5
Bloom News & Views Training Programme Launched to Improve Childcare for Children with Disabilities Children in Northern Ireland (CiNI), the regional umbrella body for the children’s sector in NI, has launched a series of training programmes to increase childcare capacity for children with disabilities. The courses are open to childminders, day care and after schools staff, parents and family members, including grandparents. Pauline Leeson, Chief Executive of CiNI explains why there is a need for such training: ‘There are increasing numbers of children with complex health needs. Often these young people tend to fall between disability services and children’s services and therefore their unique and specific circumstances and needs as children with disabilities are often overlooked. Children with disabilities, and their families, can become invisible when key decisions are made about establishing the need for planning and delivering services, including public services. These children are also more likely to experience exclusion from mainstream support services due to the perceived risks and lack of appropriate training for staff in this area. Childcare services are necessary tools to ensure consistent service provision for children with disabilities. CiNI established that if additional training could be provided this would assist in helping to maintain a level of consistency when it comes to service provision. The training programmes that have been organised are supported by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) through the Childcare Fund and we welcome this commitment.’ The training, which is funded through the DHSSPS, will help establish and sustain an increase in childcare providers who are able to; understand and respond to local need; who are diverse and able to offer childcare for children with a wide range of disabilities; are accessible for families; are able to integrate with other childcare providers within the area and who are confident in their ability to offer childcare services to a child with a disability. From a parents perspective the training will assist them in communicating the specific needs of their child to a childminder; grandparents or extended family; thereby increasing the number of people equipped with the relevant skills and confidence to help care for a child with disabilities. Pauline concludes, “Children in Northern Ireland wants to ensure that children with disabilities have equal access to childcare facilities. We hope the training courses will enable, encourage and empower a wide range of childcare providers.’ To find out about the range of courses and dates visit www.ci-ni.org.uk.
Local Singer Set to Take the Music Scene by Storm
Belfast based singer and local heart throb, Jason Clarke, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of NI’s illustrious musicians, and his latest single ‘LOVING YOU’ may well be the vehicle to propel him there. Jason, who has been described as a cross between The Script and Paolo Nutini, started to make a name for himself last year when his debut single ‘GOTTA GO’ received over 30,000 views online. Following that, his own unique spin on Shakin’ Steven’s ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ - which he filmed at night on Belfast’s Royal Avenue - ranked up over 10,000 views last December in a matter of days. With play list placement and studio appearances across all key stations in the UK, NI & ROI markets, combined with his drive and soulful distinctive voice, Jason has high hopes of cracking the music scene in the UK and beyond. He has sung with Paolo Nutini, Joan Armatrading, Shane Ward, Ronan Keating and Brian Kennedy but with a headline gig set to take place in Belfast over the summer (date to be announced) and more singles to be released this year, Jason Clarke is one artist worth watching. ‘Loving You’ is available now on itunes, Amazon, and other online stores. www.facebook.com/jasonclarkemusic www.twitter.com/jasonclarkemus 6 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Bloom News & Views Creative Exchange wants the people of East Belfast to take part in ‘Art in the Eastside’ ‘Art Flag Bunting’ project promotes and celebrates artistic talent, creativity and highlights the potential of East Belfast and its people, providing a showcase for localtalent and community engagement. Creative Exchange artists based in the Portview Trade Centre will deliver the fourth ‘Art in the Eastside’ project that is an exciting public art programme to take place throughout East Belfast. A range of temporary arts projects will be delivered from the 26th August – 8th September 2013 and will be a highlight of the 2nd East Belfast Arts Festival. There are two parts to the programme: The first is a billboard project where 50 billboards and poster sites will display original artworks by commissioned local national and international artists. The second is the ‘Art Flag Bunting’ project where artist Deirdre Robb will create temporary public artworks in community and school settings. It is intended that these artworks will be displayed outside on buildings and railings and will be a celebratory reflection of the many iconic features, heritage and personalities that make up the community of East Belfast. Deirdre comments “I want to show what makes this community unique. There are many great things happening here and the east of the city has a great social and industrial history. The buntings will be bright and colorful to flutter in a celebratory style. The aesthetic and scale of the work will be striking and the dramatic impact will encourage the public to interact and engage with the imagery presented in the artwork. It will be a symbolic notion of a culturally diverse East Belfast Community.” The artist is looking for community groups and the public to participate in the project and community groups can have access to an artist who will deliver a workshop to help them create images to be added to the buntings. She is also asking for the public to be involved and send her images that people feel is a reflection of their area. As Belfast is celebrating a special year of the 400th anniversary of the signing of the Charter, we are encouraging people to provide images of anything from 1613 -2013. This can be maps, places, documents, and photographs of people, industry or social history. A selection of artwork created for the ‘Art Flag Buntings’ will be displayed on billboards and poster sites. If you are a community group and interested in taking part, please contact Donna Hunter Tel: 028 9045 2299 or email artintheeastside@gmail.com If you want to send an image to be included in the buntings, then please email your image with your name artintheeastside@gmail.com

SPLASH With Expert Tips on School Shoes
“We know kids have only left school and we’re already talking about school shoes! Forgive us but the thing is there’s genuinely a ‘ strategic key time ‘ for getting your school shoes : not too early so kids don’t outgrow them during summer and not too late so you get the best choice – and choice there will be plenty of at SPLASH… as long as you come at the right time ! Bearing in mind SPLASH will be closed for holidays from the 12th July to 17th July, the best week to visit us for school shoes is going to be the last week of July and in any event no later than the first week of August. Switch Up Your Style DebbierBSrtoywlinst: SenioBallyhackamore li Peter O ver
Just because your stylist shows you one way to style your hair, doesn’t mean you have to wear it that way every day.
witching up your style shows that you know how “S to live in the moment and think on your feet. The models pictured can get different styles by using
different products. First things first, find a good barber. Ask your friends (the ones with style, that is) where they get their haircut. Barbers don’t read minds, which means it’s totally up to you to clearly indicate to them the type of hairstyle you’re looking for. If you can, bring a photo that showcases the cut you want. A picture really is worth 1000 words. You want a haircut Brad Pitt’s, that’s understandable, but is it realistic? It can’t hurt to ask, but be ready to hear a more honest assessment from your barber about the cut that will actually work well for you. Barbers are trained professionals who consider things like the shape of your head, and how your hair will frame your face. Be clear about the cut you want and styles you like, then let the barber tell you the best way to achieve it. For instance, it pays to defer to your stylist’s judgement regarding sideburns and neckline because they may not work with your new cut. A person with the scissors and straight razor in their hands is a person you want on your side. Show up on time, make small talk and tip well, and you’ll have a good thing going. Few things build confidence like a great haircut, especially when you consider the price point. Thankfully, it’s the kind of “feeling good about yourself” opportunity you can capitalize on every four to six weeks.

“we dont get much sun in northern ireland
and when we do we usually forget to use a sunscreen ending with bright red skin and blisters. sunscreen is not just for holidays!
“
Catch Those Rays Safely Just being out and about in the sun can lead to excessive exposure, especially from 11am-3pm. The first application should go on at least 15 mins before going into the sun. SPF15 should filter out about 93% of UVB rays, SPF50+ can block out up to 98%. Use a sunscreen that protects against UVA & UVB rays. Think UVB protection to prevent burning / UVA protection to prevent ageing.
Try Comfort Zone Sun Soul Body Cream SPF30+ -£27. Before sun exposure, apply all over the body and massage until absorbed. Don’t spread on too thinly. Specific UVA and UVB filters assure protection against sun damage.
Lip Service Don’t forget the lips. Lips need sun protection too or else they will blister and peel. Not a good look SPF 15 Lip Balm. This nourishing shield with UVA and UVB sunscreen for the lip area with a delicate glowing action. Apply to lips and apply frequently
Over Exposed?
You must always use an incredibly soothing treatment balm that helps to repair damage from exposure to UV sunlight as it helps to cool sunburn and reduce discomfort. This after sun cream contains no artificial fragrance or colour. Don’t presume darker skin can be exposed to more sunlight. Even if your teen uses a sunless tanner with added sunscreen, they should treat this layer as they would their skin and still apply regular SPF 15+ sunscreen through the day.
Dermalogica Tints Sheer Tint spf20 Lightly-tinted moisturizer provides an all-day sheer wash of color. Ultra Sensitive Tint spf30 Broad Spectrum sunscreen with tinted earth minerals helps guard skin against UV damage with antioxidants from soothing Grape Seed and Green Tea extracts, as physical sunscreens shield against skinaging and irritating UV damage. Cover Tint spf20 Creamy foundation delivers full coverage that lasts. Brighten Up spf15 This multi-tasking lotion contains a natural tint and shimmer to keep skin looking even and fresh for an all-day glow.
For a tan without the sun use Phenomenal 2-3 week Self Tan Mousse. Medium (125ml) + free mitt 18 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Norman Green who owns Rhubarb, Belfast, Les Quirey and accountant Steven Thompson decided the time was right to open a new restaurant in East Belfast. ‘Ballyhackamore and Belmont road seemed swamped and the unit on the Castlereagh Road came to our attention. We looked at the location and the surrounding catchment area and felt it was ideal. So we signed on the dotted line and with the help of local builder David Ferguson transformed the unit into Rhubarb Castlereagh. Tescos obviously felt the same about the area and beat us to the line, opening one day before us in October last year!’ Les Quirey got into food from an early age growing up in Johannesburg. He moved to London at 19 and worked in a number of large hotels before coming to NI. His first position was in Bennetts on the Belmont Road, he has also been head chef at Cafe Rouge and worked for several years at Balloo House. Rhubarb Castlereagh is open Tuesday to Sunday for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They currently have surf and turf on the dinner menu but the twist is it is beef bourginoine and scallops. You can have a fry for breakfast or caramelised banana pancakes and crispy bacon. ‘Apart from our normal menu
20 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
we normally have 8-10 specials available for lunch and dinner including fish, pasta or risotto. We feel that Rhubarb is unique because there is a cosy, friendly atmosphere. We have friendly, helpful and attentive staff and the open kitchen and proximinity to Les or Blackie putting on a cooking show every night adds to the experience. Les, Steven and the staff will be disappointed if you are, we do not want anyone leaving Rhubarb dissatisfied. We welcome feedback. Thankfully this has been overwhelmingly positive but when we have negative comments we try to get these customers back and improve their experience.’ Of late, specials have included some excpetional fish dishes including dover sole, halibut, sea trout and they have also had lobster and for private parties they can give you your dream menu. ‘At Rhubarb we are passionate about food and we want the people of Castlereagh, East belfast and further afield to share our passion. We will give them quality food at reasonable prices. If you have not been, you need to come along and see why so many people are raving about us but suggest you have a look at our website and reviews and then book and enjoy!’

Churn Back Time Nestled in the Dromara hills in County Down, you will find Beechtree Farm, where the most creamy butter is made. The skill has been passed down through the family for generations and when Will and Allison began making butter in 2005, Abernethy Butter was born.
‘We started by doing demonstrations at vintage and country shows how butter was made in days gone by,’ says Allison. ‘My dad Norman Kerr did this on his farm. We quickly realised the potential as people went mad for it and we got set up on our farm outside Dromara.’ The couple source their cream from a local farm that grazes it’s cows on the lush green pastures of The Lagan Valley. Will and Allison still love going out and demonstrating their art at local shows, farmers markets and country fairs. With their butter churn and pats in tow, they put nothing but fresh local cream, a pinch of salt and hard work into their butter. As well as being available at various shops and restaurants locally, the butter is also supplied to the likes of Heston Blumental’s The Fat Duck, Marcus Wareing at The Berkley Hotel in London and Fortnum & Mason. Abernethy Butter is made by hand using traditional methods. The cream is bought from a local farmer and is then churned until it separates into butter and buttermilk. Then, the butter is put into a large bowl and washed by hand, until the water runs clear. This is to remove all the buttermilk which would sour the butter. Then, a 22 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
pinch or two of salt is added. The butter is patted out into rolls ready for wrapping. It is all hand wrapped in greaseproof and brown paper which can all be recycled. ‘Most butter on the market today is produced by a continuous buttermaker,’ says Allison, ‘which basically forces cream into butter within a matter off minutes. This procedure enables butter to be made quickly but tends to be void of taste. Our butter, however, is lovingly prepared to ensure it is creamy and full of flavour. It has a shelf life of twelve weeks and can also be frozen if required.’ The couple also make brandy butter at Christmas which has a shelf life of six months. Abernethy Butter are the only people in Northern Ireland who make butter in this way and they love going out around Ireland to show the art of butter making. They can attend country fairs, agricultural and vintage shows and also W.I. meetings, church groups etc. Buy at The Four Seasons 38-40 Gilnahirk Road and try at Bistro Este 54 Upper Newtownards Road. For more information please contact Allison on 07890 139357 www.abernethybuttercompany.com

Char-Sui Pork Fillet with Plum Sauce
Who Said BBQing Was Just About Soggy Sausages & Burnt Burgers? At Hillmount Garden Centre’s BBQ Academy there are so many delicious flavours to tickle your tastebuds, that they’re sharing some with you today. If you’re thinking of sitting back and flicking through your copy of the Bloom with a mid morning snack, we’ve got a recipe for mouthwatering croissants. If you’re planning to impress your friends this evening with something even more adventurous, you can choose from char sui pork fillet and some grilled potato wedges. Inspired by her tenacity, Denise decided it was time to start being creative again and being a big fan of vintage finds and lovely old boxes she put the two together and started making one of a kind assemblage boxes. ‘Assemblage just refers to the act of assembling lots of different bits and pieces to make a piece of original art. I am inspired by lots of things and during the 70th Anniversary of the Belfast Blitz one of my boxes was on show at the Belfast War Museum in Talbot Street.’ Denise is a big admirer of an assemblage artist called Joseph Cornell. ‘He was so far ahead of his time and even in the 1930s he was an avid recycler and upcycler!’ says Denise. ‘I actually was delighted to have two of my boxes featured on his official website recently, that was a great moment. When I discovered the art of assemblage it opened a whole new world of art to me! I love the fact that I can use different mediums of art, from lettering, stamping, layering, altering and so on. Also because assemblage is a form of sculpture comprised of “found” objects I also think that assemblages or altered art pieces are amazing in that they can be viewed from all angles, can be picked up (sometimes!) and examined. 36 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
Denise McDowell’s passion for art stemmed from her childhood. But, inspired by her sister, she only took things to the next level very recently. Her unique creations are a joy forever. Moyra advised Denise to put a piece into the Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition and she was convinced that it was unusual enough to perhaps make it. ‘I used the title ‘How time slips away’ to mean literally a pocket watch slipping out of a door which just appealed to my weird sense of humour! I am glad that it also appealed to some of the judges and eventually to whoever bought it in the end. I was doubly pleased the following year when another box showing an old lady reflecting on her past also was chosen for the RUA Exhibition in the Ulster Museum.’ Denise is hoping to repeat a very successful exhibition which was called ‘Take Three’ and included her boxes, her sister’s painting and her daughter Sarah’s photographs. ‘I am always amazed that others like my work as well, I have had commissions from friends and family which have included boxes to celebrate birthdays, graduations and so on. I always work closely with the person who can advise me on items to include. I can include special quotes and have even completed a box on a favourite musical show, Les Miserables. I sometimes have to use new boxes rather than antique ones to keep costs down and am always open to suggestions as to how the box should eventually look. It may take 4-6 weeks pre-order to collect the items and make the final box but as they say, good things take time!’
You can see much more of Denise’s work on her Facebook page where you can also send her a message or via her website www.denisesboxes.wordpress.com

Ben Peel: On A Role Recognise the face? East Belfast born and London based actor Ben Peel has been a vital part in the incredibly successful BBC drama The Fall. We caught up with Ben to find out more about his acting career, how The Fall came about and what’s coming up next for the local actor who is very much on the rise.
was such a lovely guy, full of inspiration and praise for everyone on set. He allowed me develop my role through improvisation, he liked what I did and it allowed me to at least be recognised for what Where did you grow up? I was born and educated in east Belfast, Cabin Hill transpired to be a small but significant part in this harrowing expose of life in the Maze/Long Kesh and Campbell College and lived in Cyprus Park. When I was about nine my mum sent me to acting Prison at the time of the hunger strike. I have had over the years parts in Lewis, Spooks, Doctors and lessons with Gwyneth Murdock who I absolutely adore. She just had such an inspirational style of the local Six Degrees series. I also enjoyed playing Harry Gregg in United, the story about the Munich teaching and really brought Shakespeare to life for me at such a young age. She always had very air disaster. high standards and I feel she has been the most important and inspirational teacher I have ever had. I originally auditioned for a different part in London but wasn’t right for the role. I was very disappointed My Mum always encouraged me to do what she as the script was fantastic. A couple of months later I was over in Belfast to some press for Six knew would give me confidence and ultimately Degrees and producer Stephen Wright organised when it came to third level education I was so for me to meet and audition for the director Jakob fortunate to have parents who supported and Verbruggen. A week later I got the role of James encouraged me to do what I really wanted, to Olsen. It was a fantastic role even though I’m gutted pursue my dream of becoming an actor. If it wasn’t for my mum and dad I know I wouldn’t be I was shot and killed. I learned a lot and can’t praise enough Jakob, Julian Stevens and writer Allan were I am now. Cubitt. Working with Gillian Anderson was also invaluable. She is a true professional. I took a year out after school and worked in retail in Belfast. I auditioned for drama schools I just finished a film called 71 which is set in Belfast in London and eventually settled on the Central but was filmed in the north of England. It was School of Speech and Drama. I knew it was the directed by Yann Demange and I’m playing another place for me after my first audition. I spent three police officer in it. I am currently working on an years training at Central. It was a full on course American film called Vampire Academy being filmed but great preparation and insight about how in Pinewood Studios London. I’m working alongside difficult the industry is and how much work is Gabriel Byre who is an absolute legend. It’s due required. out February next year. Things are going well at the moment but I’m well aware of the difficult side of acting and what it’s like to be out of work so I feel My first real breakthrough was a small role in Hunger where I was privileged to work alongside very lucky. I have a beautiful daughter Poppy and fiancé Michelle who are very supportive. I have no Michael Fassbender who was really friendly and encouraging. The highlight of this experience was illusions about the industry but have great hopes and of course being directed by Steve McQueen who aspirations as well as humility.

The Hart of East Belfast We look at the history of Ireland’s oldest independent company Ritchie Hart & Co located right here in East Belfast.
T
he firm Ritchie Hart & Co Ltd was established in 1863 by a Mr. Ritchie who was a connection of the Ritchie family who are recorded as being the first real shipbuilders in Belfast in and around 1791. Mr. Ritchie ran a felt manufacturing and roofing works on the Mountpottinger Road and the products were used mainly to proof hulls of the ships built on the Lagan. Mr Ritchie was later joined in 1866 by Mr. Hart to begin an engineering business. Two years later after investing in new machinery and overhead cranes, a new Ir on Foundry became operational. The shipbuilding industry depended on outside firms for the supply of many of the iron castings required for the engine room and deck fittings as the change from sail to steam gathered pace. Ritchie Hart therefore had many orders keeping the foundry busy. The Belfast Harbour Commissioners were also customers requiring castings for work in and around the harbour area. Many types of castings were also made for building, engineering and contracting such as columns for buildings like St George’s Market, mill and factory castings, drain gullies, manhole frames and covers. Many of these can still be seen around Belfast today. A notable client from then was Samuel Davidson, the founder of Davidson & Co (Scirocco Works) who was a close friend of Mr Ritchie and Hart. In 1864 Davidson went to India to learn the tea planting business and soon devised many machines and gadgets to assist in the cultivation and harvesting of tea. Many of these were built to his instructions and drawings sent to Ritchie Hart and then exported to India. From 1899 - 1902 Mr Ritchie lived in Tangier and it is believed the Hart family gave up their connection to the firm. Mr TW Rudd came to Ritchie Hart in 1901 as General Works Manager and a year later was joined by Albert James Strain (AJS) who then worked together until the first world war when AJS joined the forces, returning in 1918. The firm of John Hall & Co was bought over in 1927 adding a sheetmetal department. When Mr Rudd died in 1935 Mr Strain invited Mr RM Heaney to join him as director. He was an expert in steam engine work and a well known figure. He died in 1953 leading to a slump in the use of steam engines for mechanical power in many mills and factories as they soon opted for electric. Mr Strain then promoted three staff to directors; his son Mr Hugh Strain, Mr Elliot and Mr John Irwin. It was in the early 70s that Mr Desmond Larmour who had been company secretary became director along with Mr Hugh Strain. Times were tough and the foundry was losing money. They tried everything to keep this, the last working foundry open, but were getting no help from Government. So everyone was paid and Mr Strain retired on 30th June 1986. The restructured business reopened the next day in Cyprus Avenue specialising in lift installation, service and repair and keeping six of the original workforce. They had around 16 lifts ongoing including the main lift at Belfast Castle. Fast forward to 2013 and they still offer the largest range of user friendly lifts from passenger to goods, new and used stairlifts and all sorts of disabled access solutions. All the other competition from that time have been bought over by multinational companies which leaves Ritchie Hart & Co (1986) Ltd the oldest independent company in Northern Ireland. The business is currently run by Desmond & June Larmour, Raymond Harvey and a very competent staff including two of Desmond’s sons; Michael & Philip Larmour.
