CONTENTS October? Cant be. No chance. Well at the time of writing its not. Its still September. But either way we’re well into
all things autumnal which means the kids now go straight into school without gurning their lamps out, its baltic pretty
much all the time and the battle of the heating boost button at home is pretty much reached ceasfire. The thing will be getting pushed left right and centre for the next six months until its time to get the speedos and leotards out
again. Until then, blast the boost, spark up the fire, get the slippers on and take comfort and warmth from your old pal Bloom. We have a belter line up this month including a couple of new property pages profiling some fantastic
homes on the market as we hear tell from our estate agent advertisers that things are very much on the up. And when
that market is confident, so grows the community confidence. East Belfast in property Bloom! Sorry. Enjoy!

Schools and youth groups across NI are being urged to register before Friday 18 October 2013 for this year’s Anti-Bullying Week, which will run from 18 to 22 November 2013. Children and young people are also being encouraged to get creative and take part in the anti-bullying art and creative writing competition, which attracted over 1200 entries last year. Anti-Bullying Week 2013 will focus on the theme of ‘I See, I Hear, I Feel’. This theme looks at how young people communicate with each other, both online and in the physical world, and the ways in which bullying can happen as part of this. This could include namecalling, teasing, mocking, dirty looks, spreading gossip, nasty text messages and embarrassing posts online, to name just a few. To find out more about Anti-Bullying Week and the creative competition, or to register your school or youth group online, go to www.endbullying. org.uk before Friday 18 October 2013. Bloom:News C.S Lewis Festival: 18th - 23rd November
Did you know that one of the world’s most popular authors came from Belfast? The author of some of the most widely read books in the English language, Clive Staples Lewis, was born in Belfast in 1898, and this November 2013, on the week of the 50th anniversary of his death, the C.S Lewis Festival will recognise and celebrate both his life and his legacy to the city and the world. Best known for his children’s books, The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis’s career encapsulated academic writing, science fiction and theology. Lewis’ gift to the world was his stories and his belief in the power of storytelling which shone through each word that he wrote. On the 22nd of November, Lewis is to be inaugurated at ‘Poets Corner’ at Westminster Abbey, the first Belfast writer to receive this prestigious honour. The C.S Lewis Festival is based in East Belfast, where C.S Lewis spent his childhood, but will feature events located across the city. With theatre, exhibitions, art, music, tours and outdoor events running from Mon 18th – Sat 23rd November, this will be an opportunity for those in Belfast and beyond to remember and celebrate the life of one its most famous sons. The Festival has been organised by the East Belfast Partnership and the Connswater Community Greenway Team. For more details go to www.communitygreenway.co.uk/ CSLewisFestival. REVAMP stocks high quality “nearly new” cutting edge labels and accessories at a fraction of their original cost and Jackie is delighted with the amazing response so far. “Customers today are cautious about spending money on luxury items. They want value for money but can’t resist beautiful clothes. This is how the concept of REVAMP evolved. I love creating a unique individual look for a client by mixing up designer labels from the spectrum of trends in store. It is challenging and rewarding for me as a stylist and customers are thrilled with their bargains.” Jackie will only accept high quality garments in mint condition for sale. The stock is constantly replenished to keep the boutique fresh and creative. Customer service is unprecedented and items are often ear-marked for regular clients. On a more practical level, Chatters food Menu has now increased in choice yet again, with yet more emphasis on mouthwatering savoury tarts and highly colourful casseroles, reflecting the owners interest in World-wide cuisine. The new “sweet” range of several different kinds of traybakes, scones, tarts, and cakes blends beautifully with the already bountiful displays - especially as some are served with fresh double cream or various icecreams or sometimes delicious home-made pouring sauces. Furthermore, Chatters is continuing to develop even stronger links with its immediate shop neighbors in Bloomfield Avenue, in particular the newly opened Revamp@AB2 Boutique, run by Jackie Cowden. An evening opening is now also on its way - driven by multiple customer requests this year. CELEBRATE BELMONT TOWER'S HERITAGE National Trust has welcomed Belmont Tower into its care. To celebrate this moment, a celebration event took place with a day of family fun and festivities.
I
n the early 1860s Sir Thomas McClure, tobacco merchant and future Liberal MP for Belfast, donated land together with £1,600 for the construction of Belmont Presbyterian Church, manse and school. The school was attached to the church and they opened almost simultaneously in January 1862. By the late 1800s the rising population in the area necessitated the construction of new educational premises and these were sponsored by Robert Ferguson. The new school, on the corner of the Belmont Road and Belmont Church Road, opened on 4 August 1890 and was named Ferguson Memorial School, in memory of Robert’s wife, Mrs Mary Ferguson. The building was designed by architect Vincent Craig, elder brother of the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, Sir James Craig. It was built in the Gothic Revivalist style with buff Scrabo sandstone stone walling and red Scottish sandstone strings and details. The building’s most distinctive feature is its square open belfried tower which is a prominent landmark in the local area. In 1999 when new premises for the school opened, local residents came together to acquire, restore

and preserve the original building for future generations to enjoy. The building reopened in May 2004 and remains at the heart of the local community. Heather Thompson, Director for the National Trust in Northern Ireland said: “Belmont Tower plays a central role in the local community and is a landmark building which people from across the city recognise. The Old Belmont School Preservation Trust has worked tirelessly with the local community since 1999 and oversaw an impressive restoration project which was completed in 2004. Since then Belmont Tower has been a hive of activity, offering classes, conference facilities, a coffee shop and a CS Lewis exhibition. It is very much business as usual and we are very proud to welcome Belmont Tower to the National Trust. We also look forward to working closely with the many friends and partners who make this such a special place.” Helen Brooker, Chairperson of The Old Belmont School Preservation Trust said: “The Old Belmont School Preservation Trust’s vision was to see this landmark building restored to its former glory and brought back into use for the benefit of the local and wider community and future generations. Almost fourteen years on, to know the future of the building has been secured by the National Trust, whilst adhering to the original vision has made the many years of obstacles and problems worthwhile.”

Take time for me-time – even if you’ve only got 30 minutesNow that the children are back at school its time to unwind. Even if this only means an express facial or back massage. We should all allow ourselves some “me” time. 2.
Twice a week take five minutes to give your skin a good exfoliate using Dermalogica daily resurfacer. It is really easy as they come in pouches. You place index finger over pouch and apply to face in circular movements. If you really don’t have time for this ,use Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. This can be used everyday and only takes a few minutes. It will instantly leave skin looking smoother and brighter.
The Secret to Youthful Skin

Girl Loves Vintage BLOG: www.girlovesvintage.tumblr.com TWITTER: @GirLovesVintage As the seasons change, high street stores are jam-packed with the next big thing in fashion. But you don’t have to stick to traditional clothes shops to transform your wardrobe from sassy Spring/ Summer into cosy Autumn/Winter. Charity shops can help you stay bang on-trend on a budget! All it takes is a little research to find out what styles will cause a stir in the months ahead. g, £5, Dune handba War on Want, Cregagh Road
A big trend for AW13 is the return of punk, which means lots of tartan or ‘punky plaid’. But don’t despair, you don’t need to turn into Vivienne Westwood overnight. Just a hint of fashion can go a long way! That’s why this Dune bag from War on Want works brilliantly. Pair with skinny jeans and a navy jacket and you’ve got the look with a mere nod and a wink to tartan.
Hardly surprising then that the kilt is also making a comeback, but that doesn’t mean you have to resort to a highland laird for inspiration! This Great Plains skirt from Marie Curie was a fantastic find. It’s brand new with its original tags and it ticks all the kilt boxes without the obvious tartan - knee length, luxurious fabric, beautiful pleating to the rear and wrap-over detail to the front. HEALTHIER MEALS FOR ALL THE FAMILY
Fideua
Most of us are unaware of the benefits of substituting our usual choice of cooking oil for the lesser known Rapeseed Oil, but the health benefits are hard to argue with! Rapeseed Oil has 50% less saturated fat than Olive Oil! It is high in the heart healthy mono and poly unsaturated fats, Omega 3,6 & 9 It is a rich source of Vitamin E and therefore a natural antioxidant. Rapeseed Oil also contains plant sterols which it is believed may help to lower cholesterol! We have teamed up with Dungiven based company Dunola, now Northern Irelands largest supplier of Rapeseed Oil, and top Chef, Jenny Bristow who is the Brand Ambassador to bring you a collection of recipes from Dunola featuring their wonderful locally produced Rapeseed Oil to help you create healthier meals for you and your family. Dunola Rapeseed Oil can be purchased online at www.dunola.co or in your local Spar or Vivo store.
Lemon & Dunola Oven Roasted Scented Vegetables Serves 2-3 Pumpkin / Red Onion / White Onion, Scallions, Aubergine, Courgettes 4-5 Vine tomatoes 4 cloves of garlic with the paper on 1 x red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped juice of ½ lemon 2 tablespoons of Dunola Rapeseed Oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cut the vegetables into large chunks and place in an oven proof dish. There is no need to deseed the tomatoes or peel the vegetables – leave the tomatoes on the vine for an impressive presentation. Add the garlic and chille and 32

oven at 200°C/Gasmark 6 for 30-45 minutes until the vegetables are softened, blackened and cooked through. Stir twice while roasting to make sure they are evenly cooked.

PHYSICAL & EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING How does a massage offering the chance of relaxation, that promotes healing and well-being both physically and emotionally sound? Yep. Wonderful. Meet Alison Stevenson, a true expert in this unique field of Geborgenheit massage. ‘I came back to Holywood last autumn after spending several years in Graz, Austria,’ says Alison, explaining the source of her inspiration. ‘The area we lived in is still mostly agricultural and the people are very connected to nature and the land; food is mostly local and simple. There are regular farmers’ markets and still many seasonal celebrations making for an “old-fashioned,” country-bound life-style. Just outside Graz is a broad area of naturally occurring thermal waters, around which hotels and spa resorts have been built. The modern culture in this part of the world is one where people, younger and older, are very aware of the benefits of both eating well and dealing with physical and emotional stress in an enjoyable, affordable and chemical-free way. Its very usual to visit the sauna and have a massage on a weekly or fortnightly basis on the way home from the office or before or after going to the pub.’ Geborgenheit is a German word which means both nurturing and a feeling of security. Alison is interested in offering an easily accessible and comfortable massage service at affordable prices by way of introducing this good self-health philosophy into our already health-aware culture here in North Down and Belfast. 36

‘Most people feel they don’t have enough money or time to take care of themselves,’ says Alison, ‘when really, this is the most noble and valuable place to start...the rewards are innumerable.’ There are two massages available: Singing Bowl Massage which may best be described as “sound therapy” using hand-crafted metal bowls from Nepal according to method developped in the west. ‘The bowls are placed on the body over clothing and gently struck to create vibrations that resonate through the body and harmonise the whole system. Clients often drift to sleep during the hour’s treatment.’ The Thai Style Herbal Stamp massage is an invigorating method using local, organic herbs and spices from afar. ‘These are tied into cloth bags, dipped in warm olive oil and “stamped” over the body, thus releasing the various qualities of the herbs and spices used whilst relaxing the muscles and stilling the mind.’ There are practice rooms in Holywood and on the Lisburn Road and a mobile service is also offered. Prices range from £25-£40 per treatment. There is a new set of wedding packages which includes gift vouchers, hen parties, a treatment for the groom-to-be and a special partner deal.

AN AWARD WINNING COMBINATION Did you know there is an award winning Indian Restaurant just up the road? Meet Jay Ahmed who runs Cinnamon in Dundonald who tells us about the accolades, the food and much more. ‘I have always been around the food business in various forms from a young age,’ says Jay. ‘I started working as a waiter for a relative of mine to earn some pocket money. The more I worked, the more I developed a passion for the both the food aspect of the business as well as the customer service aspect. Cooking has always been a large part of family life for me and I take a lot of inspiration from my mother.’ Cinnamon opened in December 2005 and the vision was to create a modern and contemporary restaurant while still embracing traditional dishes. There is a huge choice on the menu and every dish is prepared freshly to order. There is also an extensive line up of chef ’s recommendations that take you on a different direction from the classics.‘All ingredients are fresh, high quality and locally sourced where possible,’ explains Jay. ‘We pride ourselves in having highly trained and knowledgeable staff to ensure the culinary experience is one of excellence.’ So with such a diverse selection of dishes, it can be challenging to decide. Jay outlines his recommendations and customer favourites; ‘Cinnamon Special has always been our most 38

popular dish. Available as a starter or main, it is a unique and very tasty dish. I also recommend the tandoori dishes which are brimming with flavour but are a very healthy choice. Of course chicken tikka masala has always been a best seller but hotter dishes like jalfrezi and madras are becoming more popular.’ The British Curry Awards are considered “the oscars of the curry industry” and Cinnamon were delighted to have been nominated by their customers and receive their prestigious accolades. They were also awarded “Best Indian in NI” from the Asian Curry Awards last year. Such is Jay’s passion for food, it gives you an insight into the work that has gone into the menu and with that has come the rewards. And for anyone that is still undecided... ‘I urge you all to try indian food if you haven’t done so already,’ says Jay. ‘There is a huge variety available and it’s not all hot and spicy. So often I hear people saying they can’t eat indian food due to stomach issues but we have something to suit everyone including vegetarian and gluten free dishes. Our extensive menu, talented staff, fresh ingredients and passion come together in an award winning combination.’
