Proposal, tears, panic! Have no fear, the local experts are here to save the day.

Welcome :

Regular Bloom readers will know that our philosophy when we started the magazine was to provide a platform for local business, groups, creatives, charities and the community. A new outlet that was freely available to as many people as possible and at its core was East Belfast; the place we grew up in and love dearly. We are now in a situation where that philosophy has taken on a new urgency. East Belfast needs you now more than ever before. You’ll notice on our cover the hashtag #backineastbelfast which is a topic we hope will be trending on Twitter for a while to come. The campaign has been set up by local people to get people backin’ local businesses. Its a fantastic initiative and we are 100% behind it. As loyal readers and supporters of Bloom, we encourage you to get behind it too. The good news is that it’s a piece of cake to do. And it might only take a piece of cake. It may be a matter of you taking a walk and going to buy a piece of cake and a cup of tea at the local bakery, cafe or restaurant. Job done. Or a spot of dinner and a film at the local cinema. Job done. Or if you’re staying in, head to the local butcher, grab what you need, job done. There are so many ways you can galvanise and give this campaign momentum; just think close to home. And when you do, make sure you tell all your friends on Twitter or Facebook, mention where you’ve been and use the hashtag #backineastbelfast This campaign has been set up by local people for local people. Grab it with both hands and let’s make a difference to this place we all fell in love with.

East Belfast is Blooming Great East Belfast was in Bloom once again recently as Belfast City Council hosted the Brighter Belfast Environmental Awards. The environmental competition, now in its sixth year, recognises and celebrates the contributions of individuals, groups, schools and businesses towards making their local environment brighter, cleaner and greener. ‘Business and the Community Together Award’ went to East Belfast Community Development Agency for its ‘Dig It Man’ project which saw volunteers from Ulster Bank, Carew Family Centre, Wise Men of the East Network and the Probation Service, come together to encourage a disadvantaged area to take back its sense of community pride and spirit. Belmont Primary School were finalists in the ‘Education for Change’ category. A big congratulations to all the finalists and winners, a full list of which is available on the council website www.belfastcity.gov.uk/brighterbelfast. Pictured: Lord Mayor of Belfast Alderman Gavin Robinson meets Olwen McIlroy, Lynda Boyce and Sylvia Hodgins from Belmont Primary School. At a meeting of The Holywood Arches Traders Association on Tuesday 22nd January it was agreed by those present to form themselves into the Holywood Arches Business Association, with the first meeting planned for 5 February. All businesses in the wider Holywood Arches area are invited to this meeting, where Belfast City Council staff will be present to advise the group. A Night In Wonderland At The Mad March Ball for Cancer Research Do you want a great night out? Do you want to help cure cancer? The Mad March Ball is your chance to do both! For the first time in Northern Ireland, the Lord Mayor, Alderman Gavin Robinson, and Belfast City Council are hosting the 2013 Lord Mayor’s Ball in aid of Cancer Research UK at Belfast City Hall on Friday 22 March. All proceeds from the night will fund Cancer Research projects within NI. A drinks reception is followed by a four course meal, auction, raffle and music by The Untouchables. Every hour, someone in Northern Ireland is diagnosed with cancer. Researchers at the Belfast Cancer Research UK Centre are turning discoveries into new, more effective ways to prevent, detect, monitor and treat cancer, pioneering the latest techniques in radiotherapy and developing more effective drugs. Their groundbreaking work has helped save millions of lives and is entirely funded by the public. Their vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Your support can help achieve that. Pupil Makes Big Bang Congratulations to Grosvenor Grammar School pupil Gareth Reid, Form 4, who has been selected to represent Northern Ireland at the highly prestigious UK ‘Big Bang’ Science and Engineering Fair 2013. Entry to this event, which will be held at the ‘ExCel Centre’ in London from 14th – 17th March, came after Gareth achieved first place in the ‘Software4Schools’ category and runner-up in the ‘Young Engineer for Britain’ category at the provincewide ‘Sentinus Young Innovators’ Awards’, held at the Odyssey last year. Gareth’s ‘Write to Read’ project has seen him design an iPhone app capable of photographing written text and presenting it on screen in a bespoke font (created by Gareth), which has been proven to be more easily processed by dyslexic readers. Gareth’s success comes after current Form 5 pupil Eve McLelland achieved a double success at last year’s ‘Big Bang’ event, with her Fire Sprinkler project - designed to aid emergency evacuation from a large building, helping her to achieve runner-up in the ‘Junior Engineering’ category as well as winner of the ‘CREST Creativity’ Award. www.bloommagazine.co.uk 5

Wedding Special

We speak to a whole host of local wedding experts who will help plan your big day so you can focus on saying those two essential words; I do.

Bohemian Vixen

‘Bohemian Vixen is a jewellery line created to satisfy my love for all things fashion forward and quirky. A goth bride wants a garter? Brilliant...How about one with black velvet trim and a crystal skull embellishment! For our lovely shabby chic brides we have hand crocheted cotton gloves from the 1950s. We can create garters in vintage guipure lace with unique jewels and trims. All white or with coloured trim. Embellished or not; fancy or plain. You want a keepsake or heirloom piece to pass on to your daughter? You can add a tossing garter, a more restrained version of yours. Something blue? Bohemian Bridal have the prettiest little wedding bells. You attach to a garter; your bouquet or sew into the hem of your dress. We also have our “I made a wish..and you came true” brooches. Our amazing vintage 1940s butterfly wing brooches are incredibly beautiful and rare. We stock art deco shoe clips, vintage cuff links. We can create necklaces, bracelets, bridal cuffs, earrings...anything you want. As long as it is special... beautiful ...unique and one of a kind...Like you. I’ll be at Decadence Vintage Bridal Fair on 3rd March 2013 at Malone House. www.Bohemianvixen.com.’

Bespoke Music Solutions ‘Do you want the same stereotypical wedding disco that so many people seem to end up with? Why would you want any part of your wedding to be anything else other than unique! How many amazing weddings have you been to that have been let down by the evening entertainment? We’ve all been to at least one where a cheesy DJ plays novelty songs whilst throwing party games with the bride’s granny. The wedding disco is the last thing your guests will remember about your wedding so it should be top priority. What sets us apart from other wedding DJs is the fact that we are record collectors and music obsessives. We believe that each record should be creatively mixed together and as well as reading the crowd and giving them the best party possible, a good DJ should avoid gaps between records, not to mention talking over them. Our aim is to create an atmosphere like the best house party you’ve ever been at. It’s important for you to be involved in tailoring the night to be exactly the way you want. That is why we welcome lists of all your favourite songs to include in our sets and, equally important, songs that you don’t want to hear. After all, it is YOUR party. For Dj mixes, videos & more info log on to www.bespokemusicsolutions.com. We are exhibiting at Quirky Weddings Alternative Wedding Fair on 17th February 2013 at Waterfront and Decadence Vintage Bridal Fair on 3rd March 2013 at Malone House.’

My Little Hat Box - A Head of Fashion My Little Hat Box - Vintage Inspired Headpieces and Fascinators to suit everyone from the “blushing bride” to the “burlesque beauty” and everything in between. My Little Hat Box (MLHB) creates headpieces and fascinators for all occasions, whether you are the bride or mother of the bride we can create something individual and unique for your special occasion. We create unique and one of a kind pieces so you are reassured that your piece will never be the same as someone else’s. For MLHB 2012 brought back 1920’s chic and the birdcage veil. We see this trend carrying forward into 2013 as we have more and more brides seeking that Vintage glam. Sophistication, black ties, pastel coloured bridesmaids especially in mint, full length gowns too in 2013. Our alternative brides will also see non white wedding dresses and rainbow coloured elements to their weddings this year. For headdresses we see the birdcage veil being as popular as last but also soft flowers and long lace veils and Juliet caps. Wedding Special Peter Oliver - Some advice for the men who deserve some ‘me time’ too! ‘The big day! After all the organising, (which is par for the course when planning a wedding) on the morning of the wedding it’s a time for the groom to chill-out and de-stress. A round of golf is ideal. But the groom’s main priority is to look his best for the day ahead. That’s why he should book an appointment with a good barber, to get a sharp hair cut and a hot towel shave. The ladies will be spending all morning getting their hair and makeup done so the groom has to make a similar effort. Getting a hot towel shave is the best way to prepare for your big day. The application of three hot scented towels serves two purposes; it softens the bristles to enable the cut throat razor to glide through your beard effortlessly and it helps you to totally relax. The barber will initially exfoliate the bearded area prior to the shave, he will then use a badger-hair shaving brush to apply a quality Italian shaving cream to lather up. He will then shave you twice in the direction of the growth. This will give you a very close shave without irritation. Your face will be clean and smooth. To finish the barber will apply a cold towel to close the pores, he will then massage a quality moisturiser into your beard to re-hydrate your skin. After this treatment you will be looking your very best and will be feeling totally refreshed and ready for the best day of your life.’ To book an appointment call Peter Oliver 028 9058 9889. www.peterolivers.com

Bespoke Hairdressing ‘Bespoke’s top tips for having your dream wedding hair. You might have a dream bridal hairstyle in your mind but here are a few things to consider:

‘Take care of your hair: You should already be doing this anyway, if your

hair is in poor condition then it can take up to six months to bring it back to full condition. So you can’t start to soon!

The formality of your dress should be matched by your hairstyle: This is good to remember when looking through images. I find that celebrity up style images are great for getting ideas.

Always have a test run: It’s good to bring images of styles you like as this always helps. If you are having a veil or headpiece it would be good to bring this with you at this point. I would recommend that this is done approximately eight weeks from the wedding day to allow time for a second test run if needed. You can book your wedding day hair appointment at this point.

Top up any colour two weeks before your wedding day: This ensures roots are concealed. I would recommend grooms also have hair cut at this point. However the most important rule is... to relax and enjoy yourselves!’ 67 Belmont Rd. Tel 028 9065 0505 bespokehairdressing.com 14 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Veronica and her daughter Jenna from the Bridal Suite Holywood share their experience on finding the right dress for you and much, much more... ‘For us, its never about just selling a dress. Its not always about the dresses you see in magazines. We offer a consultation with the bride in which we consider all the information on the line, the cut, the colour and the fabric of a dress that will best suit that particular bride, most importantly how we can flatter their own particular body shape. Then, when we look at the size of her bridal party, we can show her all the different colours, shapes and fabrics for her bridesmaids, flower girls and mother of the bride. We try to look at how all these factors will compliment each other and consider how they might look in her wedding photographs. We have built up such a good relationship with all our designers to the extent that they will often tweak dresses to our specification. This is a great plus when someone doesn’t fall 100% in love with one style of a dress. We also have someone who hand dyes fabric and shoes for us... so there’s a lot we can offer people over and above just going out to choose a dress. We offer a dressing service for the bride on the day of the wedding. We also design and sell bouquets and jewellery. We can advise on photographers and florists, help design stationary and give information on protocol for the day. If we just look at the style of dress... there are a lot of practicalities to take into consideration one instance being what type of transport you will have to get into on the day! We have dresses ranging from £600 upwards and can also offer a bespoke service. There are 225 bridal salons in NI and it can be a daunting task when setting out to buy a wedding dress. Many people are so excited and often fall in love with a dress, but they dont know what to do after that to make it their own. We stand over our designs, maintain responsibility throughout and are available for advice whenever the bride needs us.’ ALL BRIDES TO BE, LOOK OUT FOR A VERY SPECIAL

Orangefield

With the imminent closure of Orangefield High School I thought it would be interesting to look back on the history of this particular area of East Belfast. By Emma Dunn - Honorary Secretary of East Belfast Historical Society

It is said that William Prince of Orange stopped here with his army in 1690 on his way to the Boyne and although we have no actual evidence it would seem likely that this is why the area is named although it would have then been called Orange Field. Sometime in the early 1700’s the land came into the possession of a Robert Bateson who was a wine merchant. In 1837 the land and area known as Orangefield came into the possession of probably its most well known owner John Holmes Houston a partner in the Belfast Banking Company and when his daughter married Richard Bayly Blakiston the area became known as the Blakiston-Houston Estate (hence where the name of Houston Drive comes from). Their son John Blakiston-Houston built a new dwelling in 1857 and it was called Orangefield House. The estate consisted of a large two storey house, stables, paddocks, greenhouses, landscaped lawns and a walled garden and a farm which included a school for the children whose parents worked on the Estate and also a corn mill and a water mill as well as grazing livestock. In the years between the two World Wars part of the estate was sold for the building of houses at Orby. In 1934 The Blakiston-Houston family offered to sell the Belfast Corporation part of the estate to develop as a public park and in 1938 the land was purchased for £20,000 (around one million pounds in today’s money). The outbreak of the Second World War meant that plans for the park were put on hold, and the American Army trained in this area from 1942 to 1944 and were based in the house which had been unoccupied for some time now. Orangefield Primary School was built in 1939 but was not used as a school until after the war, instead it was used as a Prisoner of War Camp and military hospital and some of the German prisoners who died here are buried in Belfast City Cemetery. The park was finally developed in 1947 and it was around this time that the Belfast Education Authority purchased the remainder of the estate for school buildings. In the mid 1950s work commenced in what would have been the garden of the big house on Orangefield Boys School. The Boys school opened in 1957 and the Girls School opened in 1960. Orangefield House remained standing until the early 1970s when it was demolished to make way for further extension to the Girls School and today nothing remains of the house or its surroundings. This picture of the house is probably from sometime around the 1950’s. ©Emma Dunn. The East Belfast Historical Society meets in Belmont Tower on the second Thursday of each month. In this, Donal’s third cookbook, he takes on the challenge of showing how easy and straightforward it is to enjoy delicious home-cooked food and spend less. Whether you a hungry student, are feeding a growing family or simple wish to save some money for a treat, Donal’s recipes will encourage everyone to enjoy satisfying yet affordable dishes. Divided into 7 chapters, Donal covers everything from everyday suppers, soups, stews and pots, baking and desserts, roasts, healthy dishes and more.

Slow Cooked Meaty Chilli 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves finely chopped 3 small carrots, finely chopped 2 celery stalks, trimmed and finely chopped 2 red peppers, deseeded and finely chopped 2 tsp chilli powder 1 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp ground cumin 500g (1lb 2oz) rib steak, finely chopped 2 x 400g (14oz) tins of chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp treacle 1 x 400g (14oz) tin each of 24

kidney beans and chickpeas, drained and rinsed Sea salt and ground black pepper Crusty bread or tortilla chips, crème fraîche and/or coriander Serves 4-6 Place a large cooking pot or flameproof casserole pan over a medium– high heat and add the oil. Add the onion, garlic, carrots, celery and peppers. Stir through the spices – the chilli powder, smoked paprika and cumin. Fry the mixture for 7–8 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Add the meat to the pan and fry gently until lightly browned, stirring regularly. Pour in the chopped tomatoes and then fill both the tins with hot water and pour this in also. Add the Worcestershire sauce and treacle.

Pour in the kidney beans and chickpeas, bring the mixture to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring every now and then. When the chilli has reduced, season with sea salt and ground black pepper. Serve in deep bowls with crusty bread or tortilla chips, a dollop of crème fraîche and coriander leaves, if you wish.

Moroccan Spiced Lamb Shoulder 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground turmeric

Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon Small bunch of coriander, leaves picked and stalks roughly chopped 1.5kg (3lb 5oz) lamb shoulder Sea salt and ground black pepper Couscous and lemon wedges, to serve Serves 6 Preheat the oven to 160°C (325°F), Gas Mark 3. Place the olive oil, ginger, cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, lemon zest and juice, chopped coriander stalks and a good pinch of salt into a mini blender. Blitz to form a smooth paste, or use a pestle and mortar. Put the lamb shoulder onto two large pieces of foil and make lots of incisions in the meat with a knife. Rub the paste all over. Add a couple of tablespoons of water, then seal the foil around the lamb, leaving a little pocket of air above it. Place on a baking sheet and cook for 4 hours. After this time, open the foil and baste the lamb with its juices. Leaving the foil open, cook for a further hour, by which time the lamb should be meltingly tender. Turn off the oven but leave the lamb inside to rest. Serve in slices with plain couscous garnished with coriander leaves, as a tasty spring/summer Sunday dinner, with a lemon wedge on the side.

The Consumer Council

There for East Belfast

Antoinette McKeown, Chief Executive, Consumer Council on the background of the organisation and their ability to make your voice heard in the issues that really matter.

T

he Consumer Council has been part of the east Belfast community since we were set up in 1985 to bring about change to benefit Northern Ireland’s consumers by making their voice heard and making it count. We do this in two ways; through educating consumers and by handling complaints. The Consumer Council has a statutory duty to speak up for consumers in the areas of transport, water, energy and food. We educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities and to provide them with the skills they need to make good decisions about their money. The Consumer Council represents consumers across Northern Ireland; the issues they face are also those affecting consumers and businesses in East Belfast and are core priorities. We are focussed on two main priorities; the cost of living for consumers and consumer proficiency. The rising cost of living is a challenge that all consumers and businesses in east Belfast face and we provide practical support showing how to potentially save money by switching utility provider, finding the cheapest oil and petrol and diesel nearby (with our handy online charts) and advice on how to find the safest way to pay for goods and services. 32 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

The Consumer Council also has a strong focus on consumer proficiency. This means ensuring that consumers have knowledge of their rights and the confidence to demand them. We have information leaflets such as Plane Facts advising on what to do if your flight is delayed or cancelled; factsheets when issues emerge such as the Ulster Bank technical crisis, or the closure of BMI Baby. We constantly update this information and respond to consumer need. Our work on Financial Capability (how people understand and manage their money) is also really important to us as we see the practical outcomes of people being able switch bank accounts to ones that better suit their needs, or being able to claim back mis-sold Private Protection Insurance. Many of these resources can be found on our website www.consumercouncil.org.uk and we regularly update consumers through our twitter and facebook sites. The Consumer Council has the legal power to act on your behalf and investigate complaints about transport water or energy. We have information on making a complaint including template letters on our website. After contacting the company concerned if they have not solved the problem or you are not satisfied with their response, you can contact our consumer support team on 0800 121 6022 or through our website. We will contact the company concerned and discuss how we can resolve your complaint and get copies of all correspondence exchanged in relation to your complaint. We will work on your behalf to achieve a fair and satisfactory response and keep you informed at every step of the complaint. Since April 2012, the Consumer Council has helped put £265,000 back in people’s pockets. Any consumers or businesses in east Belfast who think we might be able to help should contact us.’

Food Focus

Soft corn tacos

A Taste of Mexico

Tamales

Tostado bowl

A global culinary aspect that Belfast missed out on for many years was Mexican food. The good news is that there’s no need to board 3 flights to get your lips around truly authentic tacos, burritos chimichangas and more... Baja Taqueria is now open around the corner.

‘I come from a family of good cooks and learned to cook Mexican food from my uncle and mother,’ says owner Doris. ‘Our family has always focused on simple Mexican food that you would find in your grandmother’s kitchen.’ So with knowledge and skill in her blood, when did the plan for Baja Taqueria finally come to fruition? ‘The plan was to begin a Taqueria after retirement in my mid 50’s, but the plan was sped up about 10 years when we moved back to Belfast for my husband’s ill mother. I created a business plan and menu over seven years ago and began compiling family recipes. I chose Baja Taqueria for two reasons; Baja is a peninsula off the California coast known for seafood tacos, and Taqueria because the name signifies a small taco shop specializing in traditional Mexican tacos which we feature.’ The Taqueria maintained a small, staple menu and gradually added food items after taste testing with loyal customers. ‘The idea was of starting small and get the community involved in traditional Mexican and once trust was built, we could expand into more menu items such as the chimichanga, pork barbacoa and tostado bowl. Each month we will feature a new menu item and recipe.’ The menu is naturally gluten free with soft, corn tacos made in the kitchen daily. All food is prepared daily using slow roasted and sautéed meat and everything is prepared in the kitchen by two chefs using the same recipes for consistent taste. ‘Our chef Myriam is from Monterey, Mexico. We have lots of Mexican customers who appreciate the authentic taste of home. I’m from Arizona and Catherine and Andrea are from Texas so, our food is quality tested with experience!’ So what are the specialties on the menu? ‘Certainly our soft corn tacos are the biggest draw as we prepare these daily and customers can purchase just the plain tacos by the dozen. Our pork barbacoa (BBQ pork) is really popular, as are chimichangas, queso nachos (a blend of three different cheeses and not from a can) and tostado bowls. Our dream is to build the business into a hacienda Taqueria and manufacture salsas and tortillas for larger distribution. Our business was able to start in St. George’s Market and move to our new location because of funding from Enterprise Northern Ireland. We were also give a product testing grant for salsas from Invest NI. This month we begin selling our salsas at five deli’s and grocers in Belfast and then begin tortilla production with a commercial machine.’ 228 Upper Newtonards Rd. A Thing of Beauty... Ever dreamt of bringing children’s drawings to life in a keepsake piece of handmade silver or gold? Fear not because Avril Manderson can make that dream a reality. From charms, to brooches, cufflinks to pendants, a child’s creations can now be treasured forever.

E

ight years ago, my nephew, who was 3, came over to visit me in Manchester,’ says Avril. He did lots of cute drawings and when he went home I was left with a pile of drawings. I didn’t know what to do with them, but knew that I somehow wanted to preserve these precious squiggles. It was then that I came up with the idea of making pieces of silver jewellery that looked just like his drawings.’ Avril’s career route began off the silversmithing track with a degree in Government & Law and a Masters in Communication, PR and Advertising and with spells at the NI Assembly and as press officer in Manchester for a Member of the European Parliament. It was while working in Manchester that she took a nightclass - City & Guilds in silversmithing. Even as a child, she always loved making things, and this class allowed her to use her imagination in precious metal design. Avril makes each piece of jewellery herself - from the initial design to the final polish which she feels is very important. All the jewellery is made from sterling silver, including all chains and fastenings. Each piece is sent to Birmingham Assay Office where it is tested for the purity and quality of silver uses, then stamped with the Assay Hallmark as well as Avril’s ‘AM’ designer mark. ‘This means my clients get a really personal service from beginning to end. If a customer can imagine a piece of jewellery then I can usually make it. From cufflinks that look just like the tractor a child has drawn at his first day at school, to a brooch for Grandma made up of sketches from all of her six grandchildren, the possibilities are endless. I have even made jewellery from drawings and computer graphics from adults. One lady who lived beside a picturesque mountain range in Scotland sent me a photo of the view from her window. I then made her a brooch that looked just like ‘her’ mountains!’ Avril has created pieces for clients in Canada, USA, Australia, Hong Kong, South Africa, France and many other far-flung places. ‘Children’s drawings from around the world differ a bit but in essence they love drawing animals and people the most. I love hearing client’s feedback about my work. A thank-you card from a lady in Brighton told me how her grandmother wept with joy at her 80th birthday after being given a brooch made from the drawings of her four great-grandchildren. I wish I was a fly on the wall when my clients opened the box!’ Avril is also in the process of launching a range of ready to wear silver jewellery using fine silver wire, along with sterling silver sheet, to create a range of animal jewellery. Phone 07808 368953 avril@amjewellery.co.uk www.amjewellery.co.uk Avril also has a permanent exhibition of her work in the Ards Craft Centre.

Local Legend

Firm, Family Foundations David Stewart set up business in 1963. One of the linchpins in the Belfast property industry, he sadly passed away in October 2012. Son Charles shares fond memories of the man and of the unique business he built up and which Charles now manages. ‘Dad used to collect rent for the Housing Executive,’ says Charles. ‘He then got his qualifications with the RICS and set up business in a small basement office at Donegal Square East. Then when the Ulster Bank HQ was being built the building works impacted so heavily on surrounding businesses that he moved out of the city centre and into one of his satellite offices on the Belmont Road. He never looked back. He loved the feeling of being a local agent and he had a strong portfolio of clients.’ David Stewart’s standing in the community grew over the years and he became an increasingly well respected and hugely important figure in property and with local charities. But he was different. He took personal care of clients in his unique, inimitable style. And it’s this informal yet professional, relaxed and down to earth, no nonsense philosophy that still runs deep through the spirit of the business today, helmed by son Charles since David’s sudden passing late last year. ‘Dad was an incredible character and we will always maintain the friendly, personal approach he adopted. He was old school! From when I was old enough to lift a piece of furniture I’ve been working for my dad and I reckon I nailed my first house sale at the age of 14!’ Charles studied Building Surveying at university and spent nearly 2 years working in Belfast City Council’s Building Control Department. ‘I was into the bricks and mortar. Refurbs and maintenance were my initial strengths. I was trained up in the business by Dad and eventually took over the property management end of things allowing him to focus on the surveys, which incidentally I assisted him on! I learned from him how to deal with people and looking after clients. I was taught by the best.’ Stewart & Co never over extended themselves in the boom, concentrating on servicing their clients and getting on with the work in hand. 38 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Charles with the new branding on left and the classic David Stewart board on the right.

While they never want to lose that, at the same time Charles feels now is the time to grow. ‘We cover all aspects of commercial and residential sales, lettings and property management. We have retained a healthy portfolio of good loyal clients and I am delighted to carry on the high standard of service they have come to expect from my father over the last 50 years. Our reputation is everything to us and we will always try go that extra mile. Having a good agent in your corner goes a long way.’ It’s clear the personality of David Stewart echoes strong throughout the business. Charles’ unique approach is refreshing and clearly instils confidence from his clients. ‘I’m a property person,’ says Charles. ‘It’s in my blood. We may seem a bit unconventional at times,’ (Charles points to his longer hair and lack of tie), ‘we’re just very open and honest in all our day to day dealings. I would never ever want to lose that. We may have lost our founding father, but the foundations that he built are incredibly strong. People I work with have always commented about the importance of not being lost in a large agency. This business, to my Dad, was like one of his children and that is now the way I feel. Our clients I suppose are its cousins!” Register your property with Stewart & Co in 2013 and receive a voucher worth up to £300 for any Hastings Hotel and Spa on the completion of your sale.
