Fashion Special

With the arrival of spring comes a chance for new threads. Behold!

16

Welcome : There is a risk that we may be jumping the

gun with all this spring chat. But the magazine will be in your hands until the beginning of April so we’re going to take a punt and grasp the new season with vigour. What could possibly go wrong?! I suppose our track record is wobbly give that we featured snowflakes on our January cover and on the day it was delivered it was +12 degrees. If things don’t turn, blame Barra Best. If they do, praise us! There’s plenty happening this month in terms of Mothers Day and also Easter at the very end so there’ slots to prepare for. Anyway, in this edition we have a whole host of features and profiles to get your teeth into whatever the weather. Our spring / summer fashion special will inspire the wardrobe no end and we also profile some of the best businesses in the East. Read all about them and pay them a visit to see them for yourself. They’re only round the corner. Or visit some of our special advertisers just a little further afield on our special, guest page. We also are very honoured to feature the recipes of the legendary Madhur Jaffrey. This really is a huge delight for us and we have only featured a fraction of the recipes from her current book; Curry Nation. Don’t forget the campaign to support your local businesses continues unabated. It’s all about #backineastbelfast and it’s a campaign that isnt just something we have to do for a wee while. It’s a way of life.

The Connswater Community Greenway : Project Update The CCG project represents a £32 million investment in east Belfast which will create a 9km linear park along the course of east Belfast’s Knock, Loop and Connswater rivers, creating safer, cleaner and greener public space, whilst connecting people and places with 16kms of foot and cycle paths along the rivers, bringing the rivers back to life and restoring a community asset. The Greenway includes a new civic square at Holywood Arches which will be used for events and activities. The project will directly improve the living environment and will provide opportunities for improving health and well-being. A draft construction programme is available to view on the CCG website with construction commencing in early summer 2013 in Orangefield and Victoria Park. Information sessions were held in February to discuss the designs for these areas with local residents and park users. The plans for Orangefield Park include; the moving of the river to become a feature of the park and alleviate flooding problems, new path networks, park lighting, furniture and bridges. The plans for Victoria Park include; a bridge from the park to Airport Road, bunds for flood protection, an eco trail and observation area, trim trail equipment and new paths. View these designs online at www. communitygreenway.co.uk. Questions or comments? You can find the CCG on facebook. com/connswatercommunitygreenway and Tweet @ConnswaterCG

Local Trekkers Take Up Vietnam Challenge For Action Cancer Mamasmarket donates a percentage of all profits to the Cedar Foundation

From 24 October to 3 November 2013, three locals will be taking part in a trek in Vietnam to raise money for Action Cancer. Bloom News Obituary: Trevor Hill Mercer, Hillmount Nursery Centre 4 August 1930 – 21 December 2012 Trevor Hill Mercer, the familiar face of Hillmount Nursery Centre for more than 70 years, has passed peacefully away at the age of 82. Suppliers, customers, staff and family of the late Mr Mercer have paid tribute to the driving force behind the family business and a book of condolence has already been filled at Hillmount. Born in Hillhall on the 4th of August 1930, Trevor and his parents moved to Lomond Avenue where his mother ran a grocery shop. In 1940, his father bought a small holding in the Gilnahirk Hills which was to become what we all know today as Hillmount. Trevor’s father and brother worked the land, his mother ran the shop during the day and, as it was wartime, the family evacuated to Hillmount. After leaving school at the age of 14 he worked in Jameson Green, The Ship Yard and SD Bells. One night at the Floral Hall, he met Pamela Watson who became the love of his life and they got married in 1952. They moved into Hillmount Cottage which had no electric or running water. During the 1940s and 50s more and more greenhouses were built and the nursery business began to grow. 1957 saw the start of the decoration work at Balmoral which was to become a very big business over the years and even lead to him being privileged enough to meet Her Majesty The Queen. In 1962 Trevor took over the Hillmount business from his brother John. With the help of his wife Pamela and late father Hill, long hours of hard work, Trevor turned a small nursery into the centre it is today. He even laid the lawns for Dundonald House and maintained James Young’s garden. Trevor and Pamela, who passed away in 1991, had one son, Robin, born in 1954. When Robin married Edith in 1975, they began to expand the business and they have three sons – Alan, David and Andrew. When Alan was born, Pamela opened the first cafe at Hillmount known as ‘The Coffee Cabin’ and family man Trevor spent every Monday night with his grandchildren when they were growing up. Fourth generation Alan has now taken the reins at illmount. In the last few months Trevor was cared for at the Ulster Hospital and found the NHS to be a fantastic service. Trevor was laid to rest at Gilnahirk Presbyterian Church.

Peel

“ what should be in your wardrobe spring summer ? ””” “

“Looking out at our clear blue skies and the recent glimpses of sunshine will encourage us to dress this season in a profusion of fabulous colours. More than ever before you should inject a pop of bright colour into your wardrobe even if you usually only wear neutrals or even black! The colour palette this season varies from minted creams, beiges and soft greys right through to a rainbow of colours such as bright lime, burnt orange, fusion pink , all shades and hues of blue, teal and the hot coral and bright red. If very “in your face” colour isn`t you then introduce it in a bag or a scarf.

Peel stocks lots of beautifully patterned silk or fine wool scarves and gorgeous “Victoria Beckham - esque” lady like handbags in a whole array of mouth-watering colours (maybe the perfect gift for Mother`s Day). If you like a sharp look the black and white collections in spots, stripes or bold checks will be right up your street! If you intend to invest in a couple of major items this season then opt for a dress, a raincoat and some new knitwear/tee shirts.”

why ?

1. Well, firstly you will be spoiled for choice in that every collection has produced lovely dresses this season. They are elegant and often inspired by the 1940/50`s, and when you put a dress on you don’t really have to work too hard to think of what to put with it other than your foot wear! 2. There is also an amazing selection of lovely knits around ranging from fine soft and sumptuous cashmeres to easy flowing linens and quirky “skull” (a la Mc Queen) style sweaters in fine merino or cashmere. Many are colour-blocked in bright, almost neon colours and others are classic taupe’s, stone grey or black. Tee-shirts, with subtle prints or crazy prints are all available so depending on whether you want to look sophisticated or just plain cool and a little bit zany - they are all there for the taking. 3. A raincoat is of course, in our climate essential and this year there is such a fabulous array of flattering colours that you might be willing it to rain so you can stand out in the crowd and not get wet. Creenstone coats are just the business lightweight, stylish, well-priced and shower-proof, what more could you ask for?

“Take comfort in the fact designers and manufacturers have pulled out all the stops this season to give you great choices at sensible prices which are sure to be wearable, durable and most of all desirable! It is going to be a very exciting season and given the response to the spring collections thus far I`d suggest you get shopping quickly before all the best buys disappear off the rails!”

Fish in a Bengal Style Sauce (Macher Jhol)

Chicken With Spinach (Chicken Palag)

Madhur Jaffrey

Britains Favourite Curries

Madhur Jaffrey, television’s most-loved Indian cook, returned to our screens for a major new series for the Good Food Channel in October 2012. Travelling across Britain, visiting local Indian and South Asian communities, Madhur revealed how it’s possible to sample virtually the whole of Indian cuisine without ever leaving the British Isles.

Fish in a Bengal Style Sauce (Macher Jhol) Roti Chai Restaurant, London Serves 6 For the marinade

2 teaspoons ground coriander ½ teaspoon turmeric ¼ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon lemon juice ½ teaspoon Kashmiri or other mild red chilli powder

For the fish

450g (1lb) cod loin, cut into 4 centimetre (1½ inch) chunks 6 tablespoons mustard oil 12 cauliflower florets ½ teaspoon nigella seeds 3 hot green chillies, sliced 1 teaspoon crushed garlic 2 tsp finely grated root ginger 2 medium onions, chopped 2 teaspoons grain mustard 1½ teaspoons ground coriander 1½ teaspoons turmeric 24

www.bloommagazine.co.uk

2 teaspoons Kashmiri or other mild red chilli powder 4–5 tablespoons tomato passata 3 fish stock cubes 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves Mix together all the ingredients for the marinade. Coat the cod chunks in the marinade and leave for five minutes. Set a large frying pan over a medium-high heat and pour in 2 tablespoons of the mustard oil. Allow it to smoke. Carefully fry the fish all over for one or two minutes, just allowing the chunks to firm up. Remove and drain on kitchen paper. Place the cauliflower in the same oil. Stir and fry for two minutes, until brown all over. Remove and place in a bowl. Cover with cling film and allow to sweat. Put a karhai, wok or large pan, 25 centimetres (10 inches) in diameter, over a medium heat.

Pour in the remaining mustard oil. When it’s hot, add the nigella seeds, chillies, garlic and ginger. Stir for two minutes, until lightly brown. Increase the heat to high and add the onions. Fry for two minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and add 120ml (4fl oz) of water. Mix well and cover. Cook the onions for 10–12 minutes until soft and brown, stirring occasionally. Add the mustard and stir in the ground coriander, turmeric and chilli powder. Stir uncovered for one minute, then add the tomato passata. Combine thoroughly. Now pour in 250ml (9fl oz) of water. Dissolve the fish stock in the sauce and cook on a high heat for two minutes, until the oil rises to the surface. Return the cauliflower, fold it into the sauce and reduce the heat to low. Cook, uncovered, for 15 minutes at a gentle simmer. Return the

fish to the pan and carefully cook through for two to three minutes. Check for seasoning, then garnish with the coriander and serve.

Chicken with Spinach (Chicken Palag) Zahda Saeed, London Serves 6

6 tbsp olive or sunflower oil 3 medium onions, finely sliced 6 garlic cloves, peeled 400g can plum tomatoes 1 teaspoon hot chilli powder ½ teaspoon turmeric 4 teaspoons ground coriander 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 teaspoons garam masala 1–1½ teaspoons salt 2 tsp finely grated root ginger 1.2kg (2lb 12oz) whole chicken, skinned, chopped into 12 pieces 450g (1lb) frozen spinach, thawed and finely chopped 4 tablespoons whole milk 2 whole green chillies Set a large pot, about 25 centimetres (10 inches) in diameter, over a medium heat. Add the oil and, when it’s hot, tip in the onions and whole garlic cloves. Stir and fry for a few minutes, then cover. Cook for 15 minutes until brown, stirring occasionally and adding a splash of water, if necessary. Increase the heat to high and add the plum tomatoes and a little of the juice from the can. Stir and mash for two to three minutes. Add the chilli powder, turmeric, ground coriander and cumin and the garam masala, mashing until you have a thick sauce. Mix in the salt and ginger. Put in the chicken pieces and brown them on all sides for two to three minutes. Cover and cook over a low heat for n15

minutes, stirring occasionally. Increase the heat to high and add the spinach, milk and chillies. Mix well and cook over a medium heat for 15–20 minutes, stirring now and then and adding small amounts of water if the chicken seems to stick or brown too much. Serve.

Aduki Bean Curry

Aduki Bean Curry Gujarati Rasoi, London Serves 4-6

200g (7oz) aduki beans 2 tablespoons brown sugar 5 tbsps olive or sunflower oil ½ teaspoon mustard seeds 3 centimetre (generous 1 inch) cassia bark or cinnamon stick 1 dried chilli 1 garlic clove, roughly sliced, plus 1 tsp finely chopped garlic 2 tsps finely grated root ginger 2 hot green chillies, finely sliced 2 teaspoons ground coriander ½ teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon turmeric 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon garam masala 60g (2oz) finely chopped onion 125g (4½oz) tomato passata 15g (½oz) coriander leaves 6 tablespoons grated fresh coconut, or frozen grated coconut, defrosted 3 tablespoons lemon juice Rinse the beans well and soak them overnight in 1.5 litres (2¾ pints) of water in a pan about 20 centimetres (8 inches) in diameter. Next day, set the pan over a high heat, add the sugar and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover partially and cook for an hour and a half, or until the beans are very soft and broken up. Pour into a large bowl and set aside. Clean the pan and place it over a medium heat. Pour in the oil. Check it is hot by dropping in a few of the mustard seeds; they should sizzle and pop

immediately. Working quickly, add the cassia bark, followed almost immediately by the dried chilli. Allow this to darken all over for 20 seconds, then add the remaining mustard seeds and let them pop for a few seconds. Add the sliced garlic, swirl the pan and then add, all at the same time, the ginger, green chillies, ground coriander and cumin, turmeric, salt and garam masala. This process should take about one minute. Stir for a further minute, then add the onion and the finely chopped garlic. Reduce the heat to medium-low and stir and fry for two minutes, or until the onions are soft. Add the passata and cook, stirring, for three minutes. Return the beans and their cooking liquid, bring to a gentle simmer and cook, uncovered, for a further 10–15 minutes. Add water if it’s too thick, to achieve a consistency you like. Add the chopped coriander, coconut and lemon juice, stir then serve.

east belfast historical society

Everyone’s A Winner All this recent talk of horses reminded me that in East Belfast we have our own horse connection, in that many of the street names around Castlereagh Road are named after Epsom Derby winners.

I

t is not known how this came about but it is believed it was due to a popular and well respected Belfast Merchant named William Barnett who was the founder of W&R Barnett one of the leading grain importers and exporters in the United Kingdom. William Barnett was a well known racehorse owner and breeder in the 1920’s and 1930’s when the houses on the upper part of the Castlereagh Road were being developed and his horse Trigo (Spanish for wheat) was winner of the 1929 Derby as well as the English and Irish St. Ledgers and the Berkshire Handicap. Three of Trigos brothers were also Derby winners – Blenheim in 1930, Windsor Lad in 1934 and Bahram in 1935. A race course official estimated that over one million spectators were at Epsom to watch Trigo race on Wednesday the 5th of June 1929 and that over ten million pounds changed hands in betting with Trigo being heavily backed by the people of Belfast. The Belfast Telegraph received an anonymous telegram stating that ‘Trigo will do the trick’ and the newsboys chalked ‘Trigo’ over the footpaths in Royal Avenue. With the bookies having Trigo as a 33 to 1 outsider the Belfast punters were extremely happy when he won and he was no doubt heartily toasted in the East Belfast pubs that night! Also running in the 1929 Derby with Trigo was Grand Prince who was a son of Grand Parade. Grand Parade had won the Derby ten years previously in 1919 also at 33/1 odds as had his father Orby in 1907 although his odds were 100/9! Many of the Derby winners also won or were placed in one of the other four British Classics, a series of horse races run over the flat for Thoroughbreds, and Ormonde was one such horse. Owned by the Duke of Westminster, Ormonde won the Triple Crown (including the Derby) in 1886 and is generally regarded as one of the greatest racehorses ever and at the time he was labeled as the ‘horse of the century’. In 1894 Ladas won the Derby and this attracted a lot of attention as his owner, Lord Roseberry, became Prime Minister at the height of his success. Cicero won the Derby in 1905 as one of one of the shortest priced successful favorites in the history of the Epsom Derby, winning at 4/11 to remain undefeated. Other Derby winners remembered in the street names of Castlereagh are Ard Patrick (1902) Cicero (1905) and Cameronian (1931). William Barnett died in 1946, and on his death he left his house and grounds to the City of Belfast to be used as a public park. The house and its grounds are now known as Barnett’s Demesne ( Malone House) and there is an oil painting of Trigo still hanging in the hall. ©Emma Dunn. The East Belfast Historical Society meets in Belmont Tower on the second Thursday of each month. For further details please email secretary@ebhs.org.uk 32 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

We meet Karen Weston, the creative master behind Edie Sloane, named after Karen’s Grandmother who shared a passion for making things too.

I

’ve always ‘made things’ for as long as I can remember,’ says Karen, ‘Starting with Blue Peter and progressing through a BA Hons in Design and a career in advertising and marketing. When I had my first child I knew that I wouldn’t be going back to work, as family life is too important to me, but I found that I was searching for some sort of creative outlet and so started by making bunting for my son’s room. And so it began...’ Karen progressed from making little things for her sons and their friends, to wondering if she could get it stocked in some retail outlets and when she discovered she could, the next stage of the journey began. She started supplying a few shops with bunting, bags and aprons and attending some car fairs, fitting it all round family life. The wonderful range she offers now covers many bases of products and most recently, workshops. ‘I offer handcrafted and personalised gifts for the home - bunting, cushions, iPad/iPhone etc tweed sleeves, and more recently I offer a range of workshops for children and adults and birthday parties. What makes my workshops different is that I offer parent and child an opportunity to craft together, rather than the traditional workshop of dropping off the child, I attempt to offer a shared experience and some quality time together.’

MY

CY So with a broad range of products and interactive workshops, it has been a fantasCMY tic and inspirational career path, but what has been the highlight so far? ‘To be honest, K whatever I am currently working on is my highlight. I love what I do and what I make and would never supply or offer a service that would not make me happy, so I always fall a little bit in love with whatever is my current project! When I am completely absorbed in a project I spend a lot of time turning it over in my head, and the simplicity of two colours together my make my heart soar. I love that I get to create something which I love and which I know makes other people smile. I also love that I can do it around my family life, that everyday I can drop off and pick up my children from school, help with homework, make their dinner and spend time with them and then start working again in the evening after bedtime when we are in silly season. ’ Some of Karens work is stocked in Doris & Jeannie’s, 25 Belmont Road BT4. Workshops and parties are listed on the Facebook site.

local legend : alaistairs barbers Local Legend

What’ll It Be Sir?

Alaistair with daughter Sharon (left) and colleague Donna.

Alaistair’s Barbers have just celebrated their 40th anniversary. At the helm, a remarkable man with a huge wealth of experience in the business.

‘ I first started out in July of 1963,’ says Alaist-

air who still works part time alongside daughter Sharon in the barbers along with colleague Donna. ‘My brother had taken on a barber shop in Ballyhackamore, Tops Hair Fashions it was called and at one stage he had 40 hairdressers working for him in two locations. I worked for him for 10 years. You were working constantly from 9-6. But you had the ship yard and shorts in those days. Then Sam Boyd who owned this place was going back to work in Lurgan so I took it on in January 1973 and I’ve been here ever since. There was myself and a barbers across the road at the bottom called The Arches. There were seven barbers that worked in it and was actually known here locally as The Seven Barbers.’ In Alasitair’s decades in the business, he has seen styles come and go and come back round again meaning he’s seen it all before and knows each style inside out. ‘It used to be all about short back and sides,’ says Alaistair, ‘then long hair was in which caused a lot of battles in here with the mothers who wanted it neat! But fashion comes in circles. When I started there was flat tops, be bops, the Tony Curtis. But things come back one way or another.’ Sharon does styling these days too and a clear example of the evolving fashions is the fact that a style that her father was a master of 40 years ago is back once again. ‘The quiffs are back from the 60s.’ says Sharon, ‘so we’re the best place for that given our history and experience. My Dad was always known as the local stylist. Some places did standard short

back and sides cuts but if they wanted something else they were sent here. I do styling along with hair tattoos as well.’ With such a mark made on the road and in the industry, Alaistair has not only built up a clientele of regulars and friends but entire families have been coming here through the generations. ‘I’ve a lot of regulars from over the 40 years. Some of the old hands are away to the big barber shop in the sky, which is always sad. But it’s passed through the family. In the 50 years I’ve been doing this, the children I used to sit up on the board are now bringing their grandchildren in too. I thank them all for their loyalty.’ Alaistair still does a few hours a day but not as much as he used to. But he also still helps people out who perhaps cant make it to the barbers like they used to. ‘I work in the morning for a couple of hours and also I have regulars that I sort out. Some of my customers are very old or frail so I go out to their houses and do their hair there. I do six or seven a week .’ So 40 years cutting, styling and yarning with the customers who have shown a tremendous amount of loyalty to Alaistair and now Sharon over the years. So does he still enjoy opening up at half six or seven in the morning and doing the job he does. ‘I do. I still enjoy it and I’ll do it until my customers don’t want me!’ 17 Upper Newtownards Road Tel 028 9067 1376
