A very warm welcome to the May edition of Bloom. In the midst of deadline stress and organising everything involved with putting Bloom together, all of a sudden we seem to be approaching half way through the year. The weeks flick past on the calender so quick we don’t even have time to read the inspiring motivational quotes on each page. Hopefully that hasn’t left us too bereft of wisdom and inspiration as we go forward with the next issue. The fail safe is that regardless of our levels of wisdom, there are so many people jam packed to the brim full of it in the community that we have the almighty pleasure of passing on their stories and projects via these pages straight through your eyeballs and into your brainboxes. To be honest every month we find it difficult to fit it all in. We try to pack as much as we can into every available space in the magazine so if there’s something you want us to find a space for to share with the all the local people that live amongst us, send it on through and we’ll do that no sweat. And if we do run out of space, we will personally knock on every door in East Belfast and tell people to their faces. Maybe. Enjoy!

GARETH DUNLOP Hundreds Hot Foot It To Walk Off The Blues Several hundred people stepped out with the Lord Mayor, Alderman Gavin Robinson, in a unique walking event to promote wellbeing in the east of the city. ‘Walking off the Blues’ – a walk from Holywood Arches to Victoria Park along the Connswater River – encouraged local people to think about walking as a simple way to promote health and wellbeing, help people to get to know their neighbours and make new friends. Along with a picnic and live blues music by the fabulous Mama Kaz in Victoria Park, participants also had the opportunity to be informed about a range of healthy activities on offer to the local community. With design drawings and artists impressions on display it was also a chance to learn more about plans for the new Connswater Community Greenway which formed part of today’s route. The council is investing £4.2m in the Community Greenway as part of its £150m Investment Programme for the city. ‘Walking and keeping active is great for health and wellbeing and there are so many great walks around east Belfast – today’s event highlights just one of them,’ said the Lord Mayor. Walkers wore blue to highlight the importance of good mental and physical health and the many health benefits of walking, even for as little as 20 minutes a day. Although the event was free, walkers were encouraged to make a donation to the East Belfast Community Counselling service, an organisation which provides counselling to adults and young people in the area. 4 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

£6 million has been allocated to help alleviate flooding in East Belfast.
Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill said £2.5 million would be released this year, with a further £3.5 million deployed to areas most at risk during 2014. The minister told the Assembly: ‘I am very aware of the distress and the hardship that is being caused by flooding and the concerns that many home owners have in regard to home insurance. Following investigations into the causes of flooding, works have already been carried out and further works are planned for the coming financial year. Rivers Agency has also taken over maintenance and responsibility for a number of water courses which contributed to the flooding. In co-operation with councils, additional sandbag storage facilities have also been provided.’ Four additional staff have been recruited to help the Rivers Agency inspect and clear drainage culverts. The minister said she would consider a suggestion from East Belfast MLA Michael Copeland for the introduction of an advanced loans scheme so householders in worst-affected areas could pay companies directly to install flood protection systems.
Castlereagh Borough Council officially launched
a new basketball club, Lough Moss Lakers at Lough Moss Leisure Centre. The evening commenced with Castlereagh Sports Development Officer, Faron Morrison unveiling the new club kit of gold and navy vests in front of delighted family and friends. The club, established through a successful 18 month programme organised by Sports Development, will provide close to 50 children with the opportunity to gain game experience with the aim of registering with Basketball NI and participating in the Ulster Leagues next season. From only £1 per session, the Lakers train on Mondays 7pm-8pm and is open to both boys and girls 8+ years. A Hard to Guard Basketball Camp will take place at Lough Moss Leisure Centre from the 19th August to the 23rd August from 10am - 1pm. The Irish FA has launched a new programme in secondary schools teaching key business and enterprise skills to 15-16-year-olds. Pupils are asked to develop and create a Northern Ireland product before receiving a number of enterprise and football related workshops on sales, marketing, manufacturing and business administration. Pupils are then asked to present their product to three dragons in a Dragons Den situation. The overall winner then receives a grant to produce and sell a hundred of the winning products in their schools for school funds. Irish FA Head of Marketing and Communications, Geoff Wilson said: “Two years ago we ran a pilot in the Boys’ Model School, Belfast and the results were so impressive that we decided to expand the programme to other schools initially in the greater Belfast area and then across Northern Ireland. The programme has received fantastic feedback from the teachers in the controlled, maintained, other maintained, voluntary and integrated schools, in that they see the pupils getting engaged and learning new business and enterprise skills due to the link with football.” This project has been made possible due to the support of the NI Executive and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure through the ‘Promoting Equality, Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion through Sport Programme. www.bloommagazine.co.uk 5

The ESTAS determines the best estate and letting agents in the UK through research carried out amongst customers who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their agent, 23,000 questionnaires were completed by customers during the competition. 76th BB Company (Cregagh Congregational Church) held their Parents’ Night, for their seventieth
birthday. All three sections of the Company, from the youngest to oldest, put on a great show. The theme ‘Seven Decades’ brought it back to how things had been. The young Anchor Boys played oldfashioned games and the Juniors acted sketches and had a sing-a-long of old songs. The older Boys put on a gymnastics display. A former Captain of the Company, Jack Harris, reflected that although things had changed, the object remained – the ‘advancement of Christ’s Kingdom amongst Boys’. At the end of the evening a giant birthday cake was wheeled on, it was duly cut up and the audience remained for supper. The church is fifty yards in from the Cregagh Roundabout and still has a grass lawn in front, but when the BB was formed it was war time and this had been dug up and made into allotments as people were encouraged to ‘Dig For Victory’.

Bloom News Celebration & Success Stories of Council’s Market Start-Up Programme 20 entrepreneurs took part in the popular Belfast City Council business programme earlier this year which was launched to provide support to people in the city who wanted to set up a food or craft business and test trade by selling their products at St George’s Market.The success of the programme led to one local entrepreneur opening her own textile shop in east Belfast this month to sell her unique range of crafts and fabrics as well as run workshops on sewing, quilting and pattern-making. Local Wood Carver Keen To Share His Skill & Passion for the Craft
20 years ago it was relatively easy to find a local wood carving night class or club. These days you have to search hard and travel. Anyone expressing a desire to be creative with wood may well be put off by the expense of buying a set of carving chisels or the difficulty in finding an inexpensive source of suitable wood. Even if you have a set of good carving chisels, unless they are reasonably sharp you could end up frustrated. Like most hobbies, it pays to start off small, buying the best that you can afford and working your way up as your interest and ability progress. We spoke to Paul Sinclair who runs local carving sessions for his advice: ‘Driftwood can be picked up for free from the beach,’ says Paul. ‘Skips and recycling centres are full of unwanted furniture that can be salvaged and reloved. Our own homes have plain furniture that is too good to go to landfill. With a little imagination these can be turned into desirable pieces of furniture. I started carving 20 years ago by picking up driftwood from the beach. For years I only used a set of flat bevel edged carpenters chisels and when these became blunt I learned how to sharpen and hone them to a workable edge. Any time I walked past a skip I couldn’t resist the temptation to look inside and the owner’s were usually only too glad to get rid of anything I wanted. Because I am ‘Self-Taught’ I have learned the hard way and made all the mistakes. I have progressed to the stage where I am past most of the pitfalls and now thoroughly enjoy being creative with wood. I am passionate about passing this knowledge on to others so that they do not make the same mistakes and to give people an inexpensive opportunity to ‘have a go’ and discover if woodcarving is something they would like to pursue.’ Telephone 07757 107129. 10 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

100 Years & Counting Harding Memorial Primary School is in its centenary year. Clare Higgs Chairperson of the PTA discusses its past and the plans for the future. ‘It all began due to a local need for a larger church and school so Canon Harding approached Lord Arthur Hill about a plot of ground on the Cregagh Road. The Select Vestry of Willowfield Parish gave its support and the ground was secured. The first building open on the site was Dromore Street Hall on Saturday 25th February 1911 which was to be used for Divine Worship for Parishioners residing on the south side of the Parish. Willowfield National School No 2 was opened officially on 5th April 1913. The school building consisted of two storeys, with four classrooms on each storey and the first Principal was Mr D. Moore. Canon Harding was rector of Willowfield Parish from 1900-1922, his interest in the welfare of children led to his last great work; the building of Willowfield No2. After his death in 1922 the school was renamed - Harding Memorial Primary School in his honour. The current school building remains as a to storey building and has 17 classrooms. The school is well equipped for the 21st Century with each pupil having use of an interactive whiteboard in their lessons. To celebrate the centenary, the school would love to invite all past pupils, teachers, friends and local community to join them at their May Fair on Saturday 18th May from 10am. This year we will have a balloon release to mark the centenary along with stalls, games, fire brigade, golf, football... the list is endless. We are busy rehearsing for the school production which will involve all pupils from P1-P7 and will take place in early June. There will also be an open evening on Friday 14th June at 7pm. Tickets are available from the school office priced £5 adult and £3 child. There will be further events after the summer break. At Harding Memorial, we aim to put the needs of your child at the heart of all that we do. We endeavour to ensure that the children are happy and that they reach their full potential. A strong emphasis is placed on pastoral care and that remains central in the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum which encourages our pupils to achieve their best academically. The new Connswater Community Greenway community garden at Avoniel Leisure Centre is making great progress with the help of very dedicated community gardeners...

oung helpers even braved the recent snow storms to plant some beans and tidy the raised beds. This dedication epitomises the support for the garden project; it has been designed by the community and is being built by the community. Local volunteers and trainees involved have come from various local organisations including; Going Green, Oasis – Caring in Action, Bloomfield Community Association, Swann Training Services and East Belfast Community Counselling Services. With the support of Belfast City Council’s Parks and Leisure Department the volunteers are working to create a space that is open to everyone in the local community. Many of the volunteers have had no previous gardening experience and are learning new skills with the support and guidance from the experienced gardeners in the group. The garden is open to everyone and you will be guaranteed a warm welcome if you decide to drop in. Community gardens have been part of the fabric of our cities for 100s of years providing an important source of food for city folk. More recently there has been a surge in the development of urban community gardens, transforming vacant sites into green spaces that can be used not just for the production of fruit and vegetables but as social hubs for communities. They are hugely important community resources which create opportunities for recreation, exercise, therapy and education. The garden is currently open Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1.00 pm to 4.00pm and will be open the first Saturday of every month from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm from Saturday 4th May. Eventually the gardeners would like to open the garden 5 or 6 days a week with produce shared amongst all those involved. Whether you are an experienced gardener looking to get involved with your local community, are simply looking for something to do of an afternoon or you simply fancy calling in for a cup of tea why not call down to Avoniel Community Garden and be part of what promises to be a fabulous community resource.

New Male Grooming Spa Launches
Long standing East Belfast barber Peter Oliver has just launched a brand new male grooming spa at his Ballyhackamore branch. We hear from Senior Therapist Joanne Lewis on her background and the big plans.
What has been your career path to date?
I always wanted to work in the Beauty Industry, although it took a while before I actually concentrated on it. I initially trained as a psychologist at the Lausanne University in Switzerland. After qualifying I worked there for a couple of years and then moved onto Paris then onto the States. While in America I worked for the head of Christian Dior where I found my true passion, the beauty industry. I decided that I wanted to follow a career path in the beauty industry. I moved back to Belfast and enrolled into Beauty College. After further training I decided to return to Belfast where I started my own beauty business which I have run successfully for the past 6 years. Part of my work was working with The Giants ice hockey team where I would have given the player deep-tissue sports massage. Peter has now given me the opportunity to run his Male Grooming Business, which is situated in a beautifully fitted out Spa above his Ballyhackamore Barbershop. I feel this is an opportunity not to be missed. Whilst always having great hairdressing downstairs, the clients will now be able to avail of the range of male grooming treatments upstairs.
How do you spend a typical day at work?
My day at Peter Oliver’s Male Grooming will be getting the salon ready, checking emails and checking appointments. Peter Oliver continues to lead the way in gents hairdressing and I will extend that to the Male Grooming. Describe living and working in East Belfast.
I absolutely love living in East Belfast. I am extremely excited now that I will be working there too. East Belfast is probably one of the best area’s of the city. When I’m out and about in out in East Belfast I always meet someone that I know. Everyone is very friendly and we are very fortunate to have wonderful shops, restaurants and bars on our doorstep.
What is your favourite restaurant in East Belfast?
In Ballyhackamore we’re spoilt for choice. I have a very varied taste in food, but if pushed to choose I’d have to go for Jasmine, the little Indian restaurant. It’s a BYO, which keeps the price reasonable plus the staff are very friendly. For lunch it would have to be Jellybean. The selection of coffees and fun food is fantastic. It has a great atmosphere and is very family friendly
What is your favourite hidden gem in East Belfast?
Rich Rags is a very stylish boutique. It’s based at the Bloomfield-Roundabout and is run by Cherith a very friendly girl. She is great at helping me choose designer clothes.

Usually most of us would have our outdoor space under control by now. But the late snow scuppered many plans. Why not get going now? Starting with a trip to Braeside Nursery.
Braeside Nursery Centre has been one of the essential locations for local gardening needs since 1964 when it was set up by Alan. L. Hill. The nursery has increased in size from a small business then to its present day status as one of the largest nurseries in Northern Ireland with probably the widest range of plant material available all the year around. Alan also works with many of the country’s leading landscapers so you know you’re dealing with one of the country’s foremost experts when you call up for absolutely anything you need for your garden project, whatever the size. Now we have finally got rid of the dreadful snow drifts from Easter, the motivation is now at full speed for people to get out and sort out their garden whether it be a redesign, tidying up, getting the vegetable patch ready, hanging the baskets. In fact no matter what you have in your garden diary, Braeside is your one stop shop to get your plan underway. You can browse the stunning location and pick up your baskets, bedding plants, tomato plants, geraniums, vegetables, cottage garden plants, shrubs, climbers. They also offer an extensive range of compost and bark amongst other sundries in the shop. The ground is warming up nicely day by day so if you’re planning a new seasonal crop of veg, call up and talk to Alan and he will give you all the advice you need about when to sew and has all the bits and pieces you need to make sure your patch is a success. ‘We also offer stoneware and ornamental pots to enhance any garden patio or home and there is a wide range of natural stone plus it’s a locally owned nursery not that far away. We are a very short distance out of Belfast, most people know where Roselawn Cemetery is, so it’s not far past that, first on the left.’ Now open Monday to Friday until 8pm, Saturday until 5.30pm and Sunday 1-5. The May Queen Now our May Day celebrations only last one day, the first Monday of the month, but in days gone by the celebrations lasted for most of the month as it was felt that the month of May heralded the start of summer. During this month there were almost daily processions of the May Queen and her friends. In one of my favourite pictures from our archive we can see the May Queen and her friends in Derwent Street off the Newtownards Road in the 1920s although we know very little else about the picture. Each group of children had its own Queen and a boy who was known as the Darkie (I imagine that’s him with the beard!). Stopping at various places in the area the group sang, danced and performed in the hope of receiving money from onlookers, and one of the songs went as follows: Our queen can burl her leg, Burl her leg, Burl her leg, Our queen can burl her leg, Burl her leg. Our queen can tumble on her head, etc Presumably the actions were performed along with the song. When the rival entourages met the game became more competitive with mock (and probably more often than not real) battles in which the Darkie had to protect his Queen. This was reflected in one of the other songs: Our queens up the river, With your ya, ya, ya, Our queens up the river, With your ya, ya, ya, Our queens up the river, And we’ll keep her there forever, With your ya, ya, ya ya ya. The other queen down the river, With your boo, boo, boo The other queen down the river, With your boo, boo, boo The other queen down the river, And we’ll keep her down forever, With your boo, boo, boo boo boo. The group who were victorious in the battle then taunted: Our queen won, The other had to run, Hee, ho, hi, ho, Our queen won. One of the other victory songs which would have been sung was: The Darkie says he’ll marry her, He’ll marry her, he’ll marry her, The Darkie says he’ll marry her, Because she is the queen. Templemore Baths - Still Causing a Ripple Templemore Avenue Public Baths and Swimming Pools were built as one of four public baths in the City during the late 1800’s. Too many people are under the impression that the building is no longer in use…on the contrary! With an annual footfall of over 100,000 people per year the Baths is thriving, offering learn to swim classes for children and adults in what was known as the major pool, which still has the changing cubicles down the sides. The Baths also has a number of resident Clubs that offer recreational and competitive swimming for young and old as well as life saving qualifications. A number of local schools base their swim lessons at Templemore and local health practitioners use the pool for patient rehabilitation. Public swim sessions are available Monday to Friday. Aquatic based hydrotherapy sessions are on a Monday and Thursday. In addition the Baths also has a fully equipped gym, sauna and steam room. A board room is available for hire. On the Arts front, the Baths recently hosted a series of plays presented by two local production companies. In 2012, the Baths received over 160 visitors on European Heritage Open Day. Although the Centre is vibrant with activity, over 50% of the building is derelict. The Trust has ambitions plans for development of this listed building. As a minimum they would love to restore the minor pool to its former Victorian glory and at the same time bring the old slipper baths back to life. Plans are also on the table to include purpose built teaching pools that could double up for use in aquatic based therapy and general well being. There are also plans to extend across on to the former Templemore Hospital site that will provide further leisure and social opportunities for the community to enjoy. The former manager’s house to the rear is earmarked for the creation of an Arts Hub which will be known as “The Bath House”. As part of its regeneration and to facilitate increased access, it is hoped that the Baths will become a stopping off point and form an integral part of the Titanic and East Belfast Walking Tours. Exhibitions for visitors from near and far will focus on the rich architecture, heritage and social importance of this building. These plans require a significant injection of funding. If successful, Templemore will be rejuvenated to become one of the most important buildings in terms of heritage, leisure & community in Belfast. Andrew Crawford captures the incredible scenery around us, creating a unique collection of images to treasure forever.
‘I’m really no more than a keen amateur with an interest in anything visual combined with a love for my surroundings,’ says Andrew Crawford who captures the scenery around us, creating a unique collection to behold. ‘Anything I’ve learnt is gleaned from admiring the work of others in magazines such as National Geographic and Time Life. I’m also an artist using either brush or pencil to capture what I see. “Balance” links all my visual work. The viewer will hopefully not want to redistribute anything in the composition.’ In 2002 Harland & Wolff completed their final ship. For Andrew this spurred nostalgia and was the beginning of his Yard Card® collection. He had been looking through his transparencies/ slides, coming across several capturing the Belfast Shipyard in all its glory. ‘I decided to produce a collection of these pictures and selected the card format. I favoured a 6in x 4in size (3 : 2 ratio) plus 1 image of 8in x 4in as I decided to package all 21 images in a gift pack that had to be 8in x 4in in size, paving the way for future collections. I also decided that in years to come my idea/concept may have value and trade marked the name Yard Cards®. Following the learning curve of creating his Belfast Shipyard Collection, Andrew wanted to produce further gift pack collections; Belfast Lough Collection and Strangford Lough in gift pack format along with a website to showcase them. ‘I’m hoping to soon produce a 4th collection that’s available in the gift pack format; The Mournes. As a keen hill walker over the years I’ve assembled a collection of pictures that depict my experience of one of the most magical places I know and would like to share with others. Also, I will be adding to “Featured Photograph” at www.yardcards.com on a regular basis. A Growing Business Dundonald Nurseries is a family run nursery established by the late Robert Hutchinson in 1963, growing quality plants for the nation! Robert had worked hard rebuilding the three acre site and turned it into a successful wholesale business supplying shops and supermarkets. Robert Hutchinson’s daughter Anne McCully joined him in 1980 and she developed a line of hanging baskets and planted containers for all occasions. ‘We have a growing range for Mothers Day, Spring, Autumn/Winter and Christmas. We have outgrown the existing space created by my grandfather.
