You probably always see something new in Bloom every month. Yep, that’s right, we like to tinker. But our tinkering is all for a good cause, and that cause is you! Boke. Ha. No we do mean that. Unbelievably this is our 33rd Bloom now and it has come a long way. How the first issue even got out is beyond us. No one remembers anything from that night. No one speaks of it again. But we got there. And if you run your mince pie down the list of stuff down the right there, you’ll see a pretty diverse line up of features these days. We’re able to put this together because there are people out there doing some pretty amazing things in your community. So much so, that this is one of the biggest issues we’ve ever done. So when you line it up with the other editions

MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS

The long-standing and highlyregarded Holywood Music Festival runs from 15-23rd November. Started in 1947, the Festival has been an important part of the town’s calendar of events ever since. The Festival seeks to give musicians of all kinds the opportunity to perform to an audience and be given feedback by experienced and knowledgeable adjudicators. There are prizes for the winners in each category, from vocal and instrumental solos to choirs, rock bands and traditional groups, but the Festival’s principal objective is to celebrate musicmaking, especially by children and young people. The Committee wants the Festival to be very much a local event, something rooted in and supported by the local community. Tickets will be available for all the performances, many of which will take place in the Queen’s Hall. One of the very best music festivals in NI. holywoodmusicfestival.com

landlord matters The recently rolled out Tenancy Deposit Schemes Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 require all landlords who take a deposit for a private tenancy on or after the 1st April 2013 to register the deposit with an approved tenancy deposit scheme. Sheila Brown, Director - Robinsons Property Services outlines the new policy.

‘In the very near future, the government also plans to introduce compulsory registration for all landlords and there are heavy fines in store for those who fail to comply. There has never been a better time to have a letting agent on board to guide you through the procedure and to take the stress out of renting your property. At Robinsons Property Services we have built up a client base of landlords in North Down who trust us to look after their property on a daily basis and to deal with tenant finding, property maintenance and rent collection. Our landlords enjoy freedom from worry as we advise them on compliance issues and keep them up-to-date on changes in legislation. There is currently strong

demand in the rental market and we urgently require good quality properties. We offer a “No Let No Fee” policy which means that landlords have nothing to lose. Your property can be listed on Property News and Property Pal and our fees are very competitive. We have a constantly growing portfolio of properties under our management and as owner and director of Robinsons Property Services, I am able to personally oversee all transactions ensuring that our landlords receive the highest level of service. If you would like to discuss the local market in more detail or request a lettings valuation call us on 02891 470097 or e-mail robinsonsproperty@btinternet.com and we would be happy to arrange.’

TOP TIPS FOR Eating for energy

Jane McClenaghan, Vital Nutrition

G

ood food has been a lifelong passion for Northern Ireland N nutritional Therapist Jane McClenaghan, who grew up in family where growing, cooking and eating simple, healthy food was part of the fabric of life. Jane has been a Nutritional Therapist for over fifteen years and in that time has helped thousands of people to make easy, manageable changes to their diets for the good of their health. As well as her busy clinic at Framar Health in Belfast, she runs cookery classes, wellbeing workshops and specialises in developing corporate health programmes for companies all over Ireland. Jane’s latest and most exciting project to date is the launch of her book; The Vital Nutrition Cookbook, which is packed full of delicious and nutritious recipes and peppered with straightforward, practical nutritional advice for the ultimate energy kick-start. In this issue of Bloom, Jane shares with us her top tips for ‘Eating for Energy’…

“Has your get-up-and-go got up and gone? If like a lot of us you are in need of a wee bit of an energy boost, then making a few changes to your diet could be all it takes. “One of the biggest energy drains in our diet is sugar. Yes, it will give you a quick hit of energy, but very soon after your energy levels will be back to where you started, or worse. I have put together a few easy-to-follow guidelines to help perk you up”

• Always eat breakfast so that you are getting energy, nutrients and fuel from food, rather than running on empty first thing. • Eat a little protein with every meal and snack. Choose from eggs, meat, fish, chicken, nuts and seeds, houmous, natural yoghurt, sugar-free peanut butter, quinoa or cottage cheese. • Eat little and often – every 3 or 4 hours is ideal. Snacks like an apple with handful of nuts, or a couple of oatcakes with houmous will help keep sugar cravings at bay and balance out your energy levels. • Cut back on sugar and caffeine as these provide your body with a quick fix, rather than a sustained energy supply. Replace some of your tea and coffee with herbal teas and have sweet stuff as a weekend treat, not an everyday snack. • Get outside, take some exercise – even a walk around the block and give yourself some chill out time and your energy levels will soon balance out. 10 bloommagazine.co.uk

If you are interested in learning more about Jane’s expert nutritional advice, as well as gaining an understanding of how a low GI diet has the power to replenish your zest for life, alongside ideas on how to eat well on a budget, & over 50 mouth-watering recipes, check out The Vital Nutrition Cookbook due for release on Amazon on 14th November . From Darkness Comes Light

People all over the world will gather at 7:30 pm on Wednesday the 13th of November in the hope that they are part of something better for paralysed people like Mark Pollock and others. The Lifestyle Sports Run in the Dark goes global.

T

he brainchild of the Mark  Pollock Trust, the Run in the  Dark is now in its third year and  is going seriously global in 2013  with 5km and 10 km fundraising  running events set to be held  across 6 continents. There are 5  official locations - Dublin, Cork,  Belfast, London and Manchester  and pop-up events in cities  worldwide run by independent  champions. Mark’s quest began  when he fell from a second  story window in 2010. He broke  his back and the damage to his  spinal cord left him paralysed.  Sadly, this was not Mark’s first  tragedy. 12 years earlier at the  age of 22, he lost his sight. But,  then he defied his blindness and  went on to compete in ultra  endurance races across deserts,  mountains, and the polar ice caps.  These challenges include a race  to the South Pole, 6 marathons  in 7 days in the Gobi Desert;  and the Tenzing Hillary Everest  Marathon. He also won silver  and bronze medals for rowing at  the Commonwealth Games. As  the blind adventure athlete lay  in hospital, blind and paralysed,

supporters knew even though  he was struggling, he would meet  this new challenge head on. To  fund his ambition to walk again,  they created the Mark Pollock  Trust markpollocktrust.org. Now,  Mark is exploring frontiers again  using his own body as a research  subject, and using his public  profile to initiate collaborations  across the world. Commenting  on his mission, Mark says, “I  believe that the cure for spinal  cord injuries simply requires  enough of the right people having  the will to make it happen. It is  my mission to find and connect  those people around the world  to mainstream what is currently  on the fringes.” Funded primarily  by donations from the Run in the  Dark global running community,  Mark was the first person in the  world to own and regularly walk  in an Ekso Bionics robotic suit  and he trains in this €150,000  piece of equipment on a daily  basis. Supported by his trainer,  Simon O’Donnell, he is following  an aggressive physical therapy  programme in conjunction with  innovative electrical stimulation

10 Ways to Cut your Heating Costs by thermal survey’s northern ireland With winter fast approaching, Bloom Magazine has teamed up with Thermal Survey’s NI, a firstof-its kind thermal imaging company which carries out surveys (using infrared thermography) on properties in a bid to illustrate where there is heat escaping from to lower fuel costs and reduce our carbon footprint. Check out these top ten do-it-yourself tips to reduce your heating costs by making your house as efficient as possible.

1

Your fireplace may look good and keep the room warm when lit, but when the fire is out close the damper or if it’s not in use buy a chimney balloon to stop the draughts from the chimney.

2

With houses losing up to a third of their heat through the roof, loft insulation is a must, at least 300mm and don’t forget the loft hatch as well. (Grants are available with the Warm Homes Scheme to some people.)

3

Boilers need to be serviced regularly to make sure they keep their efficiency or if your boiler is old consider changing it to a condensing boiler.(there are boiler scrapage schemes available.)

4

Adjusting the thermostat down by even 1 degree can make a good saving on heating bills

5

Draughts and windows and doors can rob a house of its heat, but they can be quick and cheap to fix.

6

Shop around for your oil or gas, there are different suppliers so make sure you are getting the best value.

7

Wrap the hot water tank, a standard jacket can reduce heat loss by 75%.

8

Maximise your radiator efficiency by making sure they are bled of air. Foil behind a radiator can help reflect heat into a room and remember to turn down the thermostat in unused rooms.

9

Windows are a major source of heat loss, so if you can’t stretch to the latest gas filled double glazing, there are thermal lined blinds and curtains that help with heat loss.

10

Insulate wall cavities. Around 33% of the heat lost in an uninsulated house is through the walls. You could save around £120 on energy bills each year by insulating your wall cavities. It also creates an even temperature in your home.

A Thermal Imaging Survey of your property shows exactly where heat and energy are being lost and can also identify missing insulation and building defects in the property structure that aren’t visible to the human eye. Surveys are available from £199 from Thermal Surveys NI, telephone 0845 0948770, www.thermalsurveysni.com 14 bloommagazine.co.uk

vintage photo shoot

Local Creatives Doing Time...

Belfast milliner Nicola McKee got together with friends and colleagues for a photo shoot with a difference.

o

ur collaborative team from this photo-shoot have been friends for quite a number of years now,’ says Nicola, ‘having all started out businesses in and around the same time.We have worked on a number of photo-shoots together and earlier this year decided it was time we should work together again, but on a much grander scale.’ All the local creatives have their own unique, quirky styles that mesh together perfectly. In July they thought it would be a great opportunity to avail of the good weather and put together a photo-shoot in The Crumlin Road Gaol, the very first fashion photo-shoot of its kind to be held there. They set out to achieve a fantastic set of images and they weren’t wrong, we think that this is definitely going to generate a little buzz. ‘We all love the revival of the 1920s style that has been ever emerging through the likes of Downton and Gatsby, but wanted to use that era and put our own mark on it. We thought that a vintage styled shoot combined with the slightly haunting venue of the Gaol would be new, innovative and quite different to other photo shoots we have seen in Belfast. It was a great feeling to work with all local creatives again in an old but new and very exciting local venue,’ says Nicola The Gaol was opened up at 4am for the collective’s visit giving them time to set up for a diverse selection of shots planned throughout the morning before the tours arrived. ‘Our contact Judith and the staff The Gaol were absolutely fantastic opening up for us at that time of the morning. There was only myself and the photographer Michael Kerr there initially at the start of the morning setting up, it was a pretty eerie place at that time to say the least! Needless to say the shoot ran smoothly, and with our meticulous planning and with great help from the Gaol staff and we think we got a terrific result, hauntingly vintage bridalisque. ‘I thought it was imperative at such a challenging time to set an example that small businesses should stick together, support one another and back other local businesses. We had a great team and there will be a short promotional behind the scenes video released on youtube soon too.’

Barbacoa Beef Cheeks Serves 4 1 kg beef cheeks, trimmed 1 ancho chilli 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1 tbsp peanut butter 1 tsp instant espresso powder 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or Irish rapeseed oil 2 tbsp Highbank apple syrup or maple syrup or honey 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 handful coriander, chopped 1 teaspoon salt 250 ml chicken stock 4 limes To serve: 2 avocados, peeled and sliced (or guacamole)

4 wraps or tortillas roasted tomato salsa fresh coriander sour cream grated cheese — a strongly flavoured Cheddar Remove the stem and seeds from the ancho chilli, chop it roughly and put it in a little warm water for a few minutes to rehydrate. Blend the chilli (and its water), garlic, peanut butter, espresso powder, 2 tablespoons of the oil, syrup, cumin, paprika, coriander and salt into a paste. Marinate the beef cheeks in the paste for a few hours, preferably overnight, in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 140° C/fan 120° C/gas mark 1½. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a flameproof casserole dish and brown the cheeks on both sides. Don’t move the cheeks around too

much when you’re browning them — the less they move, the more colour and flavour they’ll pick up. Pour the rest of the marinade into the pan with the stock, then squeeze in the juice of 3 limes. Put the lid on and place in the oven for about 3½ hours, turning the cheeks once or twice while they cook. If the liquid dries up, add a little more stock. By now the cheeks should be very tender. Pull them apart with two forks and mix with the juices in the pan. Add a squeeze of lime to taste, and a touch more syrup if you like. Serve the barbacoa in a wrap or corn tortilla with guacamole or slices of avocado, roasted tomato salsa, sour cream, a sprinkling of fresh coriander and grated cheese.

Spoon the filling into the dishes and top with the sliced potatoes. Brush the potato with lots of melted butter, then put the pies into the oven and bake for about 35 minutes until nicely browned.

STEAK SANDwich Serves 1 200 g hanger steak per person extra virgin olive or Irish rapeseed oil flaky sea salt & black pepper 1 handful rocket per person 1/3 baguette per person horseradish mustard crème fraîche dressing: 100g horseradish root peeled & grated

1tbsp Dijon mustard 60g natural yoghurt 60g creme fraiche pinch fine sea salt & pepper Rub the steak with oil, season well and sear on a very hot pan for 3 minutes on each side, which will bring it to medium rare. Leave to rest for 10 minutes while you make the dressing. Combine the horseradish, mustard, yoghurt and creme fraiche. Leave for 10 minutes. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Slice the steak and serve in a good baguette with rocket and dressing.

GOOD FOR THE SOLE Holywood mum Jude Cree has created a wonderful new business that can create a unique piece of art from your little one’s old shoes and make a difference to one of NI’s most important charities.

I

could never throw away my children’s shoes!’ says Jude. ‘Whether it was fluffy little slippers or little wellies I could never let them go, so the pile at the bottom of my wardrobe got bigger and bigger and bigger. One day we had gone to the White Rocks at Portrush and had written our children’s names in the sand. I thought about the footprints beside their names and decided to use the shoes I had collected to put on a canvas and so mummylovesmylittleshoes was born.’ Jude has always loved drawing, painting and creating for fun whether it be inside or outside work. Her experience includes setting big up exhibitions at W5 and the Ulster Museum and taking art workshops for groups of children or young adults. So how do you go about getting your little ones shoes transformed into a piece of art? Jude explains. ‘All the details are on the website www. mummylovesmylittleshoes.com but basically you choose the size, colour, illustration and how you want your child’s name written from the drop down menus, send me the shoes and I will complete a canvas for you to cherish! I have just completed some canvases for a little boy Jake and his sister Iris. They love Harry Potter and Fairies and they have been my favourite to date.’ 30 bloommagazine.co.uk

Jude Cree (r) and Alison McNulty Chief Executive Tiny Life.

mummylovesmylittleshoes.com

This unique project has another strand to it that from a personal level was very important to Jude and her family as they support Tiny Life, Northern Ireland’s premature and vulnerable baby charity, dedicated to reducing premature birth, illness, disability and death in babies born here. ‘The association with Tiny Life came about through our son Patrick who was born prematurely. Whenever I started mummylovesmylittleshoes I wanted to give something back to them to help with their work with premature babies and their families so it was an easy choice.’ The best way to contact Jude is through the website and you can also follow on Twitter or through the Facebook page. You can see some examples of Jude’s work and get the mind working on how you can transform your child’s once forgotten shoes into a special piece to treasure forever. ‘Every time I look at the canvases I made for my children it makes me smile and remember good times. If this strikes a chord with you, go to the bottom of the wardrobe and dig out those shoes you have been keeping, I would love to create a canvas for you and your loved ones to enjoy.’ www.mummylovesmylittleshoes.com
