June 2013
You might think we’ve overdone the word summer on the front cover? Don’t worry, its not a massive big typo. Or a terrible oversight on our behalf. It’s an attempt at throwing positive messages into the sky direct to the weather master person, or whoever it is that controls the beams. We all had a taster of them on the odd day here over the last few weeks and went out and bought sunglasses and sausages and everything. But a big blast of sustained heat in the next while would be magic. Either way, the good news is that the fact you’re even reading this meteorological gibberish means that you have the brand new Bloom in your hands or on your screen. Nice one! We hope you enjoy what we have lined up for you. Plus if there’s something else you would like to see in a future edition, perhaps you know of an event, a person or organisation of inspirational note that you feel your community should share in? Perhaps you yourself have a story to tell? Feel free to tell it to us, and we will endeavour to pass it on . If we don’t hear the phone straight away it’s because we we’re momentarily grabbing a few solar rays while on the move in 30 degree heat. In which case, you’re welcome. Enjoy!

Cedarwood Garden is a true plantsman’s garden situated within the original extensive estate of the historic Lorne House, Craigavad, Holywood, built in 1875 by Henry Campbell, a wealthy linen merchant and founder of Campbell College in Belfast. The garden has been created within an existing framework of mature specimen trees sourced from all corners of the world. The upper garden around the house is comprised of formal planted beds containing a wide variety of perennials and shrubs. A sweeping path leads to a wooded area displaying the wide range of mature specimen trees. Under the tree canopy grows a range of wild flowers. An outstanding feature of the garden is the beautiful meandering walk along the Glen River with picturesque waterfalls. This walkway recreates that used by the Campbell family for leisurely strolls and picnics in their beautiful estate. Open 1 May 2013 - 30 Sep 2013. Airport Funding Brings Some Math-a-Magic to Local School Pupils at a Belfast primary school were treated to a magical performance by a local children’s touring theatre company thanks to funding from the George Best Belfast City Airport Community Fund. Cahoots NI arrived at Victoria Park Primary School to perform their newest show, ‘Lights, Camera, Math ‘a’ Magic’ to an audience of pupils, from two of the airport’s adopted schools, Victoria Park Primary School and Mitchell House School, eager to witness the extraordinary feats of mathematical mind reading and illusion. The performance for Victoria Park Primary and Mitchell House School was funded by the Belfast City Airport Community Fund which sees the airport fine airlines for operating late flights. This money is then re-invested into groups and projects within the local community that promote areas such as education, sport or conservation. To date, the Community Fund has donated almost £100,000. The touring production which encompasses elements of the Key Stage 2 Northern Ireland Curriculum such as Mathematics and Numeracy, Language and Literacy, The Arts and Personal Development and Mutual Understanding, has also been sponsored by Danske Bank. ‘Lights, Camera, Math ‘a’ Magic’ will continue its schools tour until 18th June 2013. A full list of Cahoots NI events can be seen at www.cahootsni.com For more information on how your community group or project can apply for funding from the Belfast City Airport Community Fund, please visit www. belfastcityairport.com or contact communityfund@belfastcityairport.com

Toy Soldier marches to success with Junk Kouture
Students Danielle Kinney and Amiee Marie McGovern stormed their way to success at the grand final of recycled fashion competition Junk Kouture which was held in ‘The Bord Gàis Energy Theatre’ in Dublin. ‘Toy Soldier’ which is made entirely from recycled materials including broken toys, waste from hole punchers, paper bags, electrical earthen wire, copper coil, broken Lego and scraps of fabric, fought off over 2,000 entrants. The girls were pipped to the post in being named the Northern region winner of the contest by ‘Dancing with Wolves’ from Buncrana which knocked them into a respectable joint second position. Student Annie Corbett of Colaiste Iosaef in County Limerick was crowned overall winner with her design entitled ‘UltraVioletWash’ which was made from hundreds of old clothes pegs, lint from clothes dryers and a tin of UVA paint. The Junk Kouture competition has gone from strength to strength since launching in 2010 and has seen thousands of teenagers’ work submitted since then with some spectacular and awe-inspiring pieces gracing the competition’s regional and national catwalks as well as the red carpet at the Royal Premiere of ‘The Hobbit’ in London. Sponsored by Bank of Ireland UK and European Recycling Platform (ERP), the only pan-European compliance scheme for electronic waste and battery recycling, Junk Kouture is the leading fashion and art competition for second level school students across Ireland and has a reputation, among many, as being the most creative. 8 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has announced an important step in the future regeneration of the Holywood with the launch of a master planning exercise. The Holywood Town Centre Masterplan will identify how regeneration opportunities within the town centre can be fully realised. Announcing the plan, the Minister said: ‘The commencement of the Holywood Town Centre Masterplan will seek to enhance the town’s fine reputation as a quality shopping destination. There are a number of prime opportunity sites that, if properly developed within an overall vision for the town centre, will enable Holywood to attract more visitors and new businesses. I look forward to seeing the plan being developed in a manner that strengthens the town centre whilst at the same time protecting the town’s unique character and rich build heritage. The master plan will present a framework within which detailed proposals can be developed for a mix of business, tourism, leisure, public space and housing that could be accommodated Mayor of North Down Borough Council, Councillor Wesley Irvine said: ‘We welcome the appointment of the consultancy team for the Holywood Masterplan. North Down Borough Council look forward to working with the Department of Social Development as well as business and local community groups and the consultancy team to take forward the development of the plan. This is a great opportunity for all stakeholders and residents of Holywood to get involved in what will be the forward planning of the town for the next 15 years.’

Super slimmers’ weight-loss success is in the bag! Local slimmers are dropping pounds (lbs) and bagging up all the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to raise pounds (££s) for a good cause in The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw. Members of the Ballyhackamore and Holywood Slimming World groups have spring-cleaned their closets and are donating the clothes that no longer fit their new slimline figures to their local Cancer Research shop. Sally Moore, who runs the groups in Ballyhackamore and Holywood, said: ‘My members have lost an amazing 2,660lbs (190stone) since January this year and they’re feeling fantastic! Lots of people have dropped down clothes sizes and their wardrobes are full of clothes that are too big and baggy now. And they’re happy to give them away because they know that they’re never going to need them again! Our Food Optimising plan isn’t a diet that members follow for a little while and then ‘come off’ when they’ve reached their target weight. At group each week we support members to make healthy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that they can keep up for life so they really do slim for good.’ The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is a nationwide fundraising drive that sees Slimming World members across the UK donating clothes to Cancer Research UK, Slimming World’s charity partner for 2013. Each bag of clothes collected could raise up to £25. Anyone who’d like to slim down like these generous Slimming World members is welcome at their local Slimming World Group. To find out more call Sally on 07738 713436 or visit www.slimmingworld.com.

Join a Growing Team of Approved Home Childcarers! Sandra Thompson is excited to have joined a team of Approved Home Childcarers working with Employers For Childcare Charitable Group. Approved Home Childcare is a unique childcare service provided in the family home. So what does a typical day for Sandra look like? ‘I finish up at my part-time job as a Family Support Assistant for Surestart at around 1pm, collect the children I look after from school and take them back to their own home. I’ll prepare a snack for the children and supervise them as they play or study. I’ll help them with their homework and then we enjoy play time until their parents come home. It means a great deal to me to be able to help a family in this way as I know how hard it can be to find the right childcare, having three children myself. I am delighted to be a part of such a new type of childcare service; it is so different to what is currently available to parents. So far it has been a real boost to my childcare career and I am looking forward to taking part in training opportunities provided by Approved Home Childcare. On top of that it has been fantastic to be able to contribute to supporting the work of Employers For Childcare Charitable Group, a campaigning charity which helps parents to balance work and family lives.’ If you are interested in becoming an Approved Home Childcarer or if you are a parent interested in the service, find out more by calling freephone 0800 206 1488, contact ahc@employersforchildcare.org or visit the website www.approvedhomechildcare.com. 10 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Talking Property John Minnis, Director of John Minnis Estate Agents with branches in East Belfast, Holywood/North Down and Donaghadee/Ards Peninsula, specialising in both the residential sales and lettings, gives us the lowdown on the hottest property news and trends. “Well, I am really excited and delighted to report that the market is very much on the up! There really has been a complete transformation in the property market, even in the last 12 months - This is the most active the market place has been since the downturn in 2007. 2013, especially within Holywood and east Belfast has seen a real surge in property sales. This is something which I am sure the readers will have witnessed with the huge rise in agreed and sold boards around this part of the city. Holywood, South and East Belfast are outperforming many other areas, and agents will tell you that for certain house types, in certain locations, demand outstrips supply. This is a completely new phenomenon to many of us and certainly not something which we have experienced in the last six years. Recently we have agreed property off, and on the market, witnessed bidding wars where houses have exceeded their asking price, we have even sold properties within a day or so of being registered for sale. This is a total change in consumer confidence and a real increase in appetite to purchase. Prices, I feel have stabilised and will largely remain at this level for the foreseeable future. I do firmly believe that the values we are currently selling at will see no further decline certainly through east Belfast and Holywood. The increase in confidence is largely due to a number of factors: 1. Prices reaching a level that people are prepared to re-engage with. 2. More availability on the mortgage market. 3. More competition in the mortgage market leading to an increase in lenders emerging and an easing of their criteria. 14 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
4. There are new mechanisms in place and products available to promote home ownership - including government schemes- for free advice on this, please contact one of our offices. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), recently published figures stating that “new buyer enquiries were at their highest level since November 2009 and prices were also starting to rise”, said 25% more surveyors reported that demand for property had risen rather than fallen. This was the seventh positive result in the last eight months - and each time there has been an industry announcement, it has mirrored our own experiences. The rental market has also experienced a real increase; we are seeing a whole new influx of corporate clients desperate to rent available properties. This is largely due to the investment into the Titanic Quarter from the global film production companies - we simply cannot fulfil demand for rental properties at present. To speak to John Minnis about buying, renting or selling your home, call Holywood 028 9042 8888, Donaghadee 028 9188 8881 or East Belfast 028 9065 3333 or visit johnminnis.co.uk ‘Like’ John Minnis Estate Agents on Facebook for the latest property info, industry news and competitions and prizes.

Views from The Mews We chat to Fiona Hunter from The Mews on how the business came about and how she can help you transform your home. You set up The Mews Giftshop back in 2006. What led you to expand the business with The Mews Interiors? “It has been an ambition of mine for a very long time to offer a bespoke interior design consultancy; however, the timing never seemed right. I have been offering the service on a small scale for over ten years, but I never officially launched the service. Now that I have and had such a fantastic response, I wish I had done it years ago. The consultancy encompasses all areas of interiors from furniture, hand-woven fabrics and wall coverings, to complete residential and commercial interior design. I regularly travel world-wide for inspiration and products, and attribute the slow-down of the housing market to the renewed interest in interior design.” Tell me a bit about your background. Has Interior Design always been your passion?
“I worked in the airline industry for just over three years as cabin crew. I then spent ten years on the road in wholesale giftware, selling products to the best shops in Ireland. Furniture restoration and interior design had always interested me from an early age, and so when the opportunity came up to buy The Mews – or Little Leaf as it was known then – I jumped at it. Five years and an expansion to two further floors and an interior design consultancy is where we are at today.”
Do you have a signature style when it comes to interior design or does it depend on the individual style of each client? “Personally, I love French Chateau, which I have very much incorporated Are you finding more and more clients are into the style and feel of the shop. reinventing existing interiors rather than But when it comes to clients, my role taking on new projects? is to deliver what they want to their “With the slow-down in the housing market, we have found tastes– not mine, and to guide them that more and more people want to invest in their properties. and advise them as best I can with They tend to research what they want, come and talk to us, what is available and on-trend. St George’s Bar & Grill We speak to Kathy Toye, manager at the wonderful St George’s Bar & Grill which is situated in one of the city’s oldest and historic buildings. The restaurant first started in 2002 and was first known as The Oxford Exchange. It was refurbished in 2009 and became St Georges Market Bar & Grill. It has always been part of the Mount Charles Group and today is a thriving restaurant above one of the best market’s in the UK. ‘The Head Chef is Ray Malcolmson,’ explains Kathy, ‘who has 25 years experience in the hospitality industry working in hotels such as The Culloden Estate & Spa, The Drumsill House in Armagh, The Marine Hotel in St Andrews and the Gourmet International Hotel in Bermuda. The menu has a major focus on provenance and boasts a wealth of locally sourced Irish produce. The award -winning suppliers that we use only deliver the freshest of ingredients plus all dishes are classically cooked using natural methods and ingredients. The chefs are happy to create gluten friendly dishes and cater for vegetarians.’ St Georges Market Bar & Grill certainly boasts a unique setting – nestled in the eaves of St Georges Market on Oxford Street, one of the oldest and most historic buildings in Belfast. The dining room has an adjoining balcony terrace which has picturesque and atmospheric views of the bustling market below. Which in turn means the chefs are also fortunate to have a wealth of fresh and artisan produce on their doorstep provided by the bespoke market stalls! ‘I guess you could say the clue is in the name’, says Kathy. ‘The restaurant is famous for the grill section as well as offering various seasonal specials. All 20 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
produce is sourced from local suppliers including Hannan Meats and Walter Ewing.’ The restaurant has an excellent Trip Advisor rating and also holds five stars for the Scores on the Doors scheme. The efficient and dedicated service personnel clearly have a ‘nothing is too much trouble’ approach to their work. ‘The staff provide a bright and cheery atmosphere in the dining room whilst always remaining knowledgeable and professional. In fact the staff aims to exceed customer expectation in everything they do.’

Depending on how well you know The Bay Tree, every reader will have different experiences to share. Simple, honest, fresh food is the foundation for every dish and a combination of loyal regulars and new faces maintain the unique atmosphere day and night. Chicken with Peppers, Lime & Honey “This dish has a sweet and sour flavour, and is very colourful. It’s always very strange how a dish will sell really well one day and not at all the next. l think of it as a late summer/early autumn dish, as that is when peppers are in season, but l make it all year round”

Parkin Ingredients
Preheat oven to 160c/Gas 4 225g/9oz butter diced In a frying pan, heat the sunflower 175g/7oz Moscavado sugar oil. Season the chicken breasts 3 tbsp black treacle and fry them for 3 or 4 minutes. 150ml/1/4 pint milk Remove them to a baking dish in 2 large eggs beaten which they fit fairly snugly. 1 tbsp ground ginger In the same frying pan, cook 4 little balls of preserved ginger the sliced r’ed onions, stirring, chopped. Then add the drizzle into the cake. peppers, lime rind and juice. stock 275g/11oz self raising flour cube, honey and about 275ml (1/2 Rhubarb Compote pint) of water. Bring to the boil, 8 stalks rhubarb cut into 2cm and then pour over the chicken. 110g/2oz sugar Bake for 45 minutes, but have Orange rind from 1/2 orange a look after half an hour, as the 2 little balls of preserved ginger honey can sometimes make the cut into strips (optional) vegetables blacken. Mascarpone Cream Serve with rice or’ potatoes, and 225/9oz Mascarpone garnish with the fresh parsley or 125ml/4fl oz double cream coriander. 1tbsp icing sugar
ginger. Combine with the warm mixture thoroughly. Spoon into the cake tin and make it level. Bake for 45-50 minutes. Cool in the tin for an hour. Make holes all over the cake with a skewer and pour two tbsp of the ginger syrup from the jar over the top. Put the rhubarb, sugar, orange and ginger in a deepish container. Remember that rhubarb will make its own liquid, so no need to add any, thinking the recipe has omitted it! Cover with foil and put in the oven for about 30 minutes. You want the rhubarb to be just soft, but holding its shape. Put the Mascarpone in a bowl and beat to loosen it. Add the icing sugar and beat again. Lightly whip the double cream. Fold the Mascarpone into the cream. www.bloommagazine.co.uk 25
June Wines & Beers
With Tom Bell of Grange Wines
June will hopefully see a change in the weather and the start of our Summer; and therefore I am going to be very optimistic in my drinks recommendations for June.
Boutinot Cairanne – La Cote Sauvage - Red Wine This wine is produced from grapes grown in the hills above the village of Cairanne in the southern Rhone valley. The grape varitals used for the blend are Grenach Noir, Syrah, old Carignan Noir and Mourvedre. The wine is matured for two years in Demi-Muids (Small Oak Barrells) and this results in a silky smooth and well balanced wine. This wine is produced from low yielding vines and the result is a wine with lusciously ripe flavours, layered with a complexity of soft spices, oaky vanilla and warming, almost fleshy fruit. This wine had great finesse and elegance and gives an intricate yet satisfying finish. £15.99
Zuccardi Estates(Serie A) Torrontes White Wine Firstly I have selected this wonderful white wine from Salta in Argentina. This is a wonderfully fresh and crisp wine. It has enticing aromas with hints of white flowers, pears, oranges and passion fruit. In the palate it is refreshing with a great taste persistence and a lovely delicate finish. £10.99
MacIvors Traditional Dry Cider - Dry Cider This Award Winning Cider is made from 100% Fresh Pressed Irish Apples from the family orchard in County Armagh and is the result of master Gregg MacNeice’s “Labour of Love”. Gregg produces ciders that are easy to drink and exceptionally well matched to food. If you want a refreshing summer drink, this wonderful cider is very hard to pass by. £2.49

Rising Star
Sweet Dreams From the age of 13 when Holywood’s Brenda Fraser went on a school exchange trip to France and discovered wonderful food and proper chocolate, she fell in love with good food and good products. The catalyst for her culinary and chocolatey journey.
‘This passion was nurtured by working in top restaurants during my five years at University, and food was always one of my first loves and my relaxation.’ With a purely commercial career spanning law, oil and construction to name just a few, she found herself jobless last year at the age of 54 and with the property market in turmoil, it was time to forge a new career which had to involve her first love; food. ‘I spotted a niche for quality handmade chocolates in the North Down area so, having done some initial training at a top chocolatier in London, I have been experimenting with flavours and fillings and honing my skills, setting up my business in May.’ On a trip to Holland when she was 18, Brenda saw the window displays of Godiva chocolates, and then in Italy she tasted the wonderful chocolate there, such as Amedei. ‘I wanted to be able to create the fabulous flavours and look of good quality luxury continental chocolates and when I spotted that niche in the market, my fantasy became reality. My French ‘family’ dubbed me ‘la petite coquine’ all those years ago because I teased them so much, so the name of the business reminds me of discovering ‘real’ chocolates for the first time, but also reflects the tease of my products-the creative design of the 28 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
chocolates drawing the senses through from the visual appearance to the tease of what lies within-an intense flavour sensation.’ Brenda makes a variety of products from filled/decorated bars to truffles and filled moulded chocolates. Some favourites are the pink champagne, chilli and lime, pina colada, raspberry, violet or rose fondants, salted muscovado caramel, goats cheese and lemon, Grappa & raisin and the Thai taster - a white chocolate ganache flavoured with coconut milk, ginger, lemongrass, chilli and lime. Seasonal flavours are on their way too with a Pimms chocolate coming up soon along with a range of cocktail chocolates. ‘All the products are made in small batches for freshness, they are not mass produced, and I make them from scratch from fresh produce. I don’t use preservatives or other agents to extend the life of the product. The range is gluten free with some dairy free products as well. I also do wedding favours and do my best to match the chocolate colours to the wedding, and am happy to create a special flavour a customer may want.’
Catch Brenda at Sunday Fayre in Victoria Square 23rd June and dates after that. Keep in touch via: Facebook.com/LaCoquinehandmadechocolates orders@lacoquine.co.uk / www.lacoquine.co.uk

Iona: 28 Years of Wellbeing Heidi Steffen of Iona was born in Zurich and spent her childhood there. When she arrived in Belfast in 1972, her life changed forever. ‘I arrived in Belfast in Oktober 1972 to work in Glencraig Community with Special needs children and adults. I was meant to stay for three months practical experience and return back to Zurich to continue to train to be a Social worker. The three months have become 40 years! I really enjoyed being here although Belfast in 1972 was a very different place, very scary in fact! After 13 years working in Glencraig I moved to Holywood to start my own shop back in 1985.’ The premises was already a health food shop which at that time was owned by Jack McClelland who actually had shops in many other towns across Northern Ireland. But Heidi set up her own operation and began to diversify in the items she was offering the local community, with tremendous success. ‘I soon introduced locally made crafts and toys all made from natural materials. I believe they are important for health too. I also sold fresh organic vegetables and fruit but gave up selling them when Camphill Holywood started as I was involved in the first years of Camphill Holywood!’ For Heidi, being such a mainstay in the town she has seen it change a lot over the years, especially where she is situated on Church 30 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
Road. ‘The town has really improved a lot over the years. The biggest change are all the coffee shops and restaurants which is great in bringing people into town. Back when I set up, Church Road was still mainly residential and people had lovely gardens out the back. I still keep a large garden here where I grow my herbs and herb plants which I sell in the shop.’ With a passion for selling local produce and goods, Heidi also works hard to find new and exciting products from further afield, travelling regularly to trade fairs and keeping up to date on innovations that she feels here customers would be interested in equal measure as her, such is her passion for her business. ‘I stock a wide range of good including food, herbal and homeopathic medicines and vitamins along with a wide range of Bodycare products. I am also a stockist for all Vogel Products, all Weleda products and all Dr. Hauschka products. My customers are a mix of local and passing trade. They cover all ages as children love my wooden toys. They’re very faithful and I thank them for their loyal custom over the years.’
