July & August 2013

Of course our cover image for the summer edition paints the picture of a wonderfully serene and tranquil summers day lounging in a picturesque meadow quaffing bubbly and eating nothing but the finest of culinary delights served from an ultra glamorous basket with more treats brimming over the edge. Of course in reality many of our picnics tell a different story. Where are the ham sarnies cut into triangles, the black currant drink that the kids spilt over the sausage rolls, the leaking ice box that ruined that “quiche’ someone knocked up, the wasp that’s been trying to get at the pear picking porky’s and the wee melters from across the way who keep kicking their football in your direction knocking over the last beer! Ah summer. You can’t whack it. We say bring it on. This is our July & August issue which contains all the info and local businesses you need over the next eight weeks or so. Again, a picnic basket full of bits and bobs going on over the next while to keep you busy. Thank you to all our advertisers and contributors and chiefly yourselves for your support. We’ll be back in September after the GLORIOUS summer weather we have ahead.

Rodgers & Browne Squib Northern Championship - Ross and Stuart Vaughan,

new comers to the Squib fleet, are the 2013 Rodgers & Browne Squib Northern Champions hosted over the first weekend of June at Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club. The event attracted 17 entries, with visitors from Killyleagh Yacht Club, Royal St George Yacht Club and Howth Yacht Club. Light, tricky conditions prevailed throughout the weekend, with several major wind shifts adding to the difficulties. Race 1 was won by locals Denis Todd/Al Boston in Contender who had a good lead over fellow club mates and brothers, Ross and Stuart Vaughan, in Joint Venture and the father and daughter team of Fred and Holly Campbell in Halloween. In Race 2 the wind increased significantly and Greg Bell/Leah Anderson on Prodigal led throughout the race to secure the gun at the finish. Joint Venture managed another second, beating last year’s winners Davy Eccles/Phil Hutchinson on Inshallah, who were third. With the wind continuing to clock around to the right, the third race was initially abandoned as a further 100 degree shift to the right materialised. The restarted race saw Halloween take line honours, followed by Inshallah and visitors from Howth, Jonathan Craig/Hazel Ruane on Kerfuffle securing third place. On Sunday morning the Squibbers faced with minimal breeze, as predicted. After some persuasion the fleet made its way out to the inevitable postponement. However, experienced PRO Nigel Kearney’s patience was rewarded when the sea breeze started to fill in after midday and, after an abandoned start as the wind settled, he got two of the races away in steady breeze. Joint Venture added to its impressive score card with its first win of the event. Previous Northern Champions, Gordon Patterson/Ross Nolan on Quickstep III, secured a second place with David Mellor/Leandre McCollum on Conquest taking third. With the time limit for a final start fast approaching, it was clear that the fifth race would be the last and so the PRO took opportunity to extend it to three rounds, ensuring that the fleet got value for money. Prodigal got a great start, and led from start to finish. Inshallah and Halloween took second and third place respectively. Fourth place was enough for the Vaughan brothers to return to the club moorings as Northern Champions. Overall: 1st: Joint Venture: Ross and Stuart Vaughan, RNIYC 2nd: Prodigal: Greg Bell and Leah Anderson, RNIYC 3rd: Halloween: Fred and Holly Campbell, RNIYC

Bloom News & Views Join a Growing Team of Approved Home Childcarers! Sandra Thompson is excited to have joined a team of Approved Home Childcarers working with Employers For Childcare Charitable Group. Approved Home Childcare is a unique childcare service provided in the family home. So what does a typical day for Sandra look like? ‘I finish up at my part-time job as a Family Support Assistant for Surestart at around 1pm, collect the children I look after from school and take them back to their own home. I’ll prepare a snack for the children and supervise them as they play or study. I’ll help them with their homework and then we enjoy play time until their parents come home. It means a great deal to me to be able to help a family in this way as I know how hard it can be to find the right childcare, having three children myself. I am delighted to be a part of such a new type of childcare service; it is so different to what is currently available to parents. So far it has been a real boost to my childcare career and I am looking forward to taking part in training opportunities provided by Approved Home Childcare. On top of that it has been fantastic to be able to contribute to supporting the work of Employers For Childcare Charitable Group, a campaigning charity which helps parents to balance work and family lives.’ If you are interested in becoming an Approved Home Childcarer or if you are a parent interested in the service, find out more by calling freephone 0800 206 1488, contact via email via ahc@employersforchildcare.org or visit www.approvedhomechildcare.com.

Young people from across Northern Ireland gathered at George Best Belfast City Airport last month to battle it out for a place in the cast of ‘FAME – The Musical’ which is to be performed by Music Theatre 4 Youth (MT4Uth) in T13 Shared Cultural Space in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast in August. The musical theatre fans aged 10-23 attended audition workshops with an impressive panel of judges, who were flown to Belfast from London by the production’s official travel partner, Aer Lingus, including award winning Director Phil Willmott, who directed the tenth anniversary cast of ‘FAME – The Musical’ on the West End. Passengers in the airport, who is the headline sponsor of ‘FAME – The Musical’, were then treated to performances by the audition groups following their intense singing and dancing workshops. The cast will be announced in the coming weeks. www.belfastcityairport.com 6 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Bloom News & Views Join the Parade The Cows Are Back: Reading & Spelling Friday 20th September

 There’s no doubt thatand the Art & Home  Literacy Cow Parade of Culture Night 2012 was

a great success. The herd of 20+ brightly Dyslexia Support

decorated cattle grazed proudly in the Art & Home High Street pasture. With entries from Holywood PSNI, Centra, Holywood, Boots, Holywood Scouts, Coast Restaurant, The Green Party, Stevenson & Son and various other Holywood businesses, clubs and arty individuals, the winner was Cafe Kina’s Moo La La from the Moulin Rouge, selected by Miss Northern Ireland 2012, Tiffany Brien. ‘We’re hopeful that this year’s Cow Parade will be even bigger and better,’ says Art & Home. ‘Join us! It’s FREE to participate. Everyone can join the parade. Entries can be built from scratch - from old bicycles, boxes, papier mache. The sky’s the limit! We can also provide an XXL animal for you! As with last year we can provide a papier mache cow (1m high) for £125. Art & Home is not profiting from the sale of these. It’s all just a bit of fun. You can paint it, dress it, chop it, brand it and ultimately take it home! What a great team building exercise. Plus, with a good varnish, she will be a loyal mascot for many years to come. For businesses and organisations, the Cow Parade is a great way of being a part of Culture Night and attracting attention to your brand, school/club. Last year there was significant media coverage of the herd, and within the town itself, businesses have re-used their cows in their own community and PR events. Other animals are available, please contact us if you would like further details. This year our luscious green pasture is again sponsored by the fantastic Artificial Grass company. For further details, to join our herd or to order your cow, email us at sales@artandhomeweb.com.’ Remember, everyone can take part in Culture Night which is organised by Holywood Shared Town. You can keep up-to-date, share your talent or get more information by following the Holywood Culture Night Facebook Page or emailing holywoodculturenight@yahoo.co.uk.

September On Its Way Again: Expert Tuition Is At Hand Kip McGrath Education Centres are an extremely successful franchise established over thirty years ago. ‘Today there are almost 700 operating around the world and I’m proud to say that my centre is the first in Belfast,’ says Jan Annesley who runs the Belfast operation. ‘The aim of a Kip centre is to offer children aged 6-18 expert tuition in English and mathematics in a friendly, positive environment. Each student is given a free assessment from which a programme of study is created to meet your child’s needs. We also cater for and support the curriculum taught in the schools of the area we operate in; so in my centre we offer tuition in KS1 and 2 Literacy and Numeracy, the grammar school entrance exams and English, English Literature and Mathematics from KS3 to GCSE to A Level. Each day I offer four 80 minute sessions with a maximum of four students and remember each one is working on their own programme of study. So if your child needs support with any educational stage from P2 to A Level for the new school year, we can help! Our support if also ongoing - we’re here for as long as your child needs us’. This year the Scout Fete incorporated a Great Holywood Bake Off Competition, generously sponsored by Sainsbury’s and judged by Lady Sylvia Hermon MP, Mrs Carol Mayberry of Coast Restaurant and Brian Slattery, Store Manager, Sainsbury’s Holywood Exchange. There were lots of fairground attractions and the Owl Man (Don Scott) brought along four owls and some hedgehogs that are due to be released back into the wild shortly. World Police & Fire Games

The World Police & Fire Games is a biennial event for serving and retired police, fire, prison and border security officers. 2013 host is Belfast with Bangor holding some event too.

Belfast will host the World Police and Fire Games, one of the largest multi-sport events in the world, from 1st to 10th August 2013. www.2013wpfg.com The Games is the third largest international multi-sport event in the world (after the Olympics and the World Masters). It is almost three times the size of the Commonwealth Games in terms of competitor numbers and will be the largest ever sporting event to take place in Northern Ireland. Organsiers aim to attract 25,000 visitors to Belfast for the Games, and it is estimated this will include 10,000 competitors from over 70 countries competing in around 57 sports, plus 15,000 friends and family. Up to 3,600 volunteers will help deliver the ‘friendliest Games ever’ and will create a diverse pool of skilled volunteers for future events in Northern Ireland. The Games will also leave a lasting legacy as a result of extensive Services engagement in the community, schools and with young people, and through our three official charities. A Pop of Colour!

Summer has finally arrived (well, while I am writing this is it has but it may have disappeared by the time we go to print!). So it is time for us to get a little colour into our wardrobes. We are all having to tighten our belts at the minute, so a great way to add colour or a different look to an outfit is with our nail polish. Colours this season are bold and bright, so it is the perfect time to try a new shade, don’t be afraid to clash but do be afraid of chipped nail varnish! Nothing looks worse than chipped nails so try our amazing top coat, Seche Vite, to avoid this or opt for A Gelish manicure that will remain chip free for two weeks.

Top Up Your Tan The Safe Way

I recommended applying St Tropez Gradual Tan (Face), to still be tanned while avoiding the harmful rays of the sun. Now St Tropez have gone one better and have added the amazing anti-ageing product Matrixyl to their gradual face tanner. For those of us who like to get-up-and-glow, apply it at night, it will leave the skin hydrated, smooth and with a beautiful glow. No better way to start your day.

Pack It In!

Packing for your holidays has become somewhat of a logistical nightmare, thanks to liquid restrictions, but there is no need to go away without your beauty essentials. Call into the salon to see our travel solutions, including 100 ml cleanser and toner sets (ÂŁ15), 30ml moisturisers and more!

Call in anytime, the girls at The Beauty Studio love talking all things beauty & would love to see you. 18 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Churn Back Time Nestled in the Dromara hills in County Down, you will find Beechtree Farm, where the most creamy butter is made. The skill has been passed down through the family for generations and when Will and Allison began making butter in 2005, Abernethy Butter was born.

‘We started by doing demonstrations at vintage and country shows how butter was made in days gone by,’ says Allison. ‘My dad Norman Kerr did this on his farm. We quickly realised the potential as people went mad for it and we got set up on our farm outside Dromara.’ The couple source their cream from a local farm that grazes it’s cows on the lush green pastures of The Lagan Valley. Will and Allison still love going out and demonstrating their art at local shows, farmers markets and country fairs. With their butter churn and pats in tow, they put nothing but fresh local cream, a pinch of salt and hard work into their butter. As well as being available at various shops and restaurants locally, the butter is also supplied to the likes of Heston Blumental’s The Fat Duck, Marcus Wareing at The Berkley Hotel in London and Fortnum & Mason. Abernethy Butter is made by hand using traditional methods. The cream is bought from a local farmer and is then churned until it separates into butter and buttermilk. Then, the butter is put into a large bowl and washed by hand, until the water runs clear. This is to remove all the buttermilk which would sour the butter. Then, a 20 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

pinch or two of salt is added. The butter is patted out into rolls ready for wrapping. It is all hand wrapped in greaseproof and brown paper which can all be recycled. ‘Most butter on the market today is produced by a continuous buttermaker,’ says Allison, ‘which basically forces cream into butter within a matter off minutes. This procedure enables butter to be made quickly but tends to be void of taste. Our butter, however, is lovingly prepared to ensure it is creamy and full of flavour. It has a shelf life of twelve weeks and can also be frozen if required.’ The couple also make brandy butter at Christmas which has a shelf life of six months. Abernethy Butter are the only people in Northern Ireland who make butter in this way and they love going out around Ireland to show the art of butter making. They can attend country fairs, agricultural and vintage shows and also W.I. meetings, church groups etc. Buy at Hills Greengrocers 89 High Street Holywood or McKees Country Store 28 Holywood Rd, Craigantlet . Health & Beauty

By The Experts..

past month in the salon we have been busy “ this busy busy with our yon-ka body treatment range. if you are bearing it all on the beach this year then definitely get a good body care routine in place before you jet off. not only will you take a better, more even tan but your skin will feel so silky smooth! lush!

Don’ Be Afraid to Fake It! However, if you are not going to bake on the beach then there are so many amazing products to help you FAKE it - and fake it good! And here I can testify - after two weeks of dull, wet and overcast weather on honeymoon I made sure that my first stop was the salon and I had a gorgeous Vita Liberata spray tan! One week later I topped it up with the Vita Liberata phenomenal mousse and have been naturally golden ever since! No denying it you do feel better with a little bit of colour.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow... So you are exfoliated, tanned and ready for the beach - but don’t be hairy McLairy! There are lots of hair removal options out there and my fave is still waxing AND it doesn’t have to be hideously painful. At DHMB we use amazing Outbacks Organics gold peelable wax. Any client that we use it on always remarks on how gentle it is on the skin, so not only are you hair free but you will also avoid that plucked chicken look! So for this summer we are offering all Bloom readers a complimentary eyebrow wax so you can come in and try it out!

One Final Thought... Summer makeup is always fun. Bright colours and bronzes are all in! So revive you makeup bag and experiment! Pop into the salon if you want an ‘Inspire me’ Makeup lesson and we can help get you all glam for this summers weddings, holidays and sunny days!

A True Bag for Life

The main aim of the new 5p bag tax is to help protect the environment by cutting the number of carrier bags we use. In many other European countries, this has been the norm for years. One German company that has had this issue in the bag for years now is Reisenthel. They seek solutions for the challenges and unsolved problems of the every day and one of the problems of this new dawn in shopping is having “We knew right away that it was « On ayou tout de suite compris que a true bag for life that is practical and that you know énorme succès. » will always keep to hand. Rising Star

Thinking Inside The Box ‘I have always loved art and art history,’ says Denise, ‘but never studied it formally other than school. My twin sister and I were always drawing, painting and crafting but never took it any further until very recently.’ Moyra, Denise’s’ twin sister, was recovering from illness three years ago and decided to take up painting again. She now has a big fan base and a website which has had 14,000 hits. Inspired by her tenacity, Denise decided it was time to start being creative again and being a big fan of vintage finds and lovely old boxes she put the two together and started making one of a kind assemblage boxes. ‘Assemblage just refers to the act of assembling lots of different bits and pieces to make a piece of original art. I am inspired by lots of things and during the 70th Anniversary of the Belfast Blitz one of my boxes was on show at the Belfast War Museum in Talbot Street.’ Denise is a big admirer of an assemblage artist called Joseph Cornell. ‘He was so far ahead of his time and even in the 1930s he was an avid recycler and upcycler!’ says Denise. ‘I actually was delighted to have two of my boxes featured on his official website recently, that was a great moment. When I discovered the art of assemblage it opened a whole new world of art to me! I love the fact that I can use different mediums of art, from lettering, stamping, layering, altering and so on. Also because assemblage is a form of sculpture comprised of “found” objects I also think that assemblages or altered art pieces are amazing in that they can be viewed from all angles, can be picked up (sometimes!) and examined. 28 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Denise McDowell’s passion for art stemmed from her childhood. But, inspired by her sister, she only took things to the next level very recently. Her unique creations are a joy forever. Moyra advised Denise to put a piece into the Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition and she was convinced that it was unusual enough to perhaps make it. ‘I used the title ‘How time slips away’ to mean literally a pocket watch slipping out of a door which just appealed to my weird sense of humour! I am glad that it also appealed to some of the judges and eventually to whoever bought it in the end. I was doubly pleased the following year when another box showing an old lady reflecting on her past also was chosen for the RUA Exhibition in the Ulster Museum.’ Denise is hoping to repeat a very successful exhibition which was called ‘Take Three’ and included her boxes, her sister’s painting and her daughter Sarah’s photographs. ‘I am always amazed that others like my work as well, I have had commissions from friends and family which have included boxes to celebrate birthdays, graduations and so on. I always work closely with the person who can advise me on items to include. I can include special quotes and have even completed a box on a favourite musical show, Les Miserables. I sometimes have to use new boxes rather than antique ones to keep costs down and am always open to suggestions as to how the box should eventually look. It may take 4-6 weeks pre-order to collect the items and make the final box but as they say, good things take time!’

You can see much more of Denise’s work on her Facebook page where you can also send her a message or via her website www.denisesboxes.wordpress.com

The ‘Best’ Trail in Belfast On what would have been George Best’s 67th birthday, a trail that guides you through the football legend’s humble beginnings, was launched on his ‘home turf’. This new trail will guide locals and visitors alike to the places that shaped the young George Best before he was talent spotted and left for Manchester United. Places of interest include his home at Burren Way, the playing fields where he honed his skills, his favourite east Belfast haunts and of course his final resting place. Today, George’s birthday and the 50th anniversary of his signing to Manchester United Football Club, is the perfect occasion on which to pay tribute to the local football phenomenon with this trail. Speaking at the launch George’s sister Barbara McNarry said, ‘The George Best Trail evokes many special childhood memories for me. It was a very happy family time and I have vivid memories of a football crazy George honing his skills in the big field’ as we fondly called it, at the top of Burren Way. Since George’s death in 2005, many poignant tributes have been paid and this latest venture by the Connswater Community Greenway is yet another example of the high esteem in which George was held, not just in east Belfast, but around the world. Many people have already made the journey to pay their respects to their hero and the George Best Trail will give them a better understanding of George’s childhood before leaving east Belfast for Manchester. The 22nd May is George’s birthday and what a special way to mark what would above been his 67th. I wish this venture every success.’ A spokesman for the George Best Foundation further commented, ‘We are delighted that 30 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Connswater Community Greenway has taken the initiative to create this trail which hopefully will further cement George’s legacy. That will in turn raise the awareness of the Foundation and the work it does to help young people develop life skills and wellness through the power of football and sport.’ Wendy Langham Programme Manager of the Connswater Community Greenway project also made comment, ‘We are delighted with the George Best Trail, one of a series of trails that are being developed along the Connswater Community Greenway. East Belfast is well known for its industrial heritage but less well known for world class people who have come from the area. The trail is an insight into George’s east Belfast, enabling people to experience for themselves the place that produced one of the best footballers of all time. George Best is one of Northern Ireland’s most famous sporting sons and deciding to focus an entire trail on his early life here in east Belfast was an easy decision to make”. The official launch of the trail in Greenway Womens Centre was followed by a visit to the Best family home, 16 Burren Way, which is now available as a holiday rental in order to preserve the legacy of the east Belfast legend www.georgebesthouse.com.
