Your local news & views Holywood Estate Agents Find New Home for Barnaby
Eight year old Olivia Dixon from Holywood was delighted to win a super sized teddy bear in time for Christmas in a ‘Guess the Name’ competition held by Holywood estate agents, Rodgers & Browne in aid of Barnardo’s NI Children in Grief Appeal supporting children who have been bereaved. Olivia won Barnaby after her name was pulled out of a hat of correct guesses. Michael Rodgers who presented Olivia with the bear said, ‘We are pleased to see Barnaby going to a good home and that local children who have suffered a bereavement will benefit from the donations made by our customers.’ Anne Dawson from Barnardo’s NI said, ‘We are delighted that Rogers & Browne chose to support Barnardo’s NI with their Christmas competition. In these difficult economic times every penny raised is appreciated and all the money raised will go directly to Barnardo’s Children in Grief Appeal which is raising funds to support our counselling service for children who have been bereaved.’ Pictured (l-r) are: Michael Rodgers, Rodgers & Browne, Anne Dawson, Barnardo’s NI and Olivia Dixon together with Barnaby the bear. www.facebook.com/BarnardosNI

Childcare Inititave Is a Helping Hand Last year Employers For Childcare Charitable Group launched Approved Home Childcare, a unique service offering quality childcare in the security of the family home. Parents only pay for the hours they use and there are no holiday fees. With the purse strings increasingly tightened, this offers a new affordable childcare choice for many families. Parents can also use Childcare Vouchers or tax credits to help reduce the cost even further. Approved Home Childcare will be particularly appealing to parents working unconventional hours as it is tailored to the individual needs of the family. The service also offers great potential to parents of children with special needs and/or disabilities, where childcare is often best placed within the home environment. Furthermore, Approved Home Childcare will be of enormous interest to larger families as unlike other forms of childcare, parents pay by the hour, rather than per child. Approved Home Childcare is available across Northern Ireland and there are Approved Home Childcarers ready to be matched to families in your area. If you are a parent interested in the Approved Home Childcare service or if you are interested in working as a childcarer, find out more by calling freephone 0800 206 1488, contact ahc@employersforchildcare.org or visit www.approvedhomechildcare.com. 4 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Bloom: News For the first time in Northern Ireland, the Lord Mayor, Alderman Gavin Robinson, and Belfast City Council are hosting the 2013 Lord Mayor’s Ball in aid of Cancer Research UK at Belfast City Hall on Friday 22 March. All proceeds from the night will fund Cancer Research projects within NI. A drinks reception is followed by a four course meal, auction, raffle and music by The Untouchables. For info tickets or for your business to get involved contact Nikki on 07791 846670 or log on to www.madmarchball.co.uk CONGRATULATIONS to Lynda Eccles from Holywood who is December’s ‘Recycler of the Month! Lynda has won a £50 Argos voucher. A winner is selected every month from residents of North Down who have recycled the correct items in their blue bin. The competition is funded by the Department of the Environment, Rethink Waste campaign. Be sure to recycle only the allowed items in your blue bin: paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and cans. Emma Adair from North Down Borough Council said, ‘This is an excellent competition to reward North Down recyclers. It offers a small incentive to recycle as much as we can and reduce contamination in the blue bin. We have only been able to run this competition with the support of Rethink Waste campaign.’ Rory McIlroy has started The Rory Foundation. Among the first projects is to bring attention to children by putting the name of charities on his bag when possible. ‘When I was younger my parents sacrificed everything to allow me to play the game I love,’ McIlroy said. ‘Having that support from my family gave me the opportunity to chase my dreams. But I know that every child is not so fortunate. My aim is that The Rory Foundation will support children’s charities big and small, around the world, that try to give kids that helping hand.’ He starts with “The 6 Bags Project,” in which he will display the name of a children’s charity in each of his first six tournaments. During the tournament, the bag will be auctioned through www.roryfoundation.com, with the money going to that charity. The NI Cancer Fund for Children was first on the bag at Abu Dhabi. Artist Causing Ripples Across the Water The Whimsical World of Dawn Crothers is a solo exhibition of the local artist running until 6th February at McAllister Thomas Fine Art in Surrey. The gallery took Dawn to the Chelsea Art Fair last Summer and managed to sell all 10 paintings they exhibited in the first day and so offered her, her first Solo Exhibition in England. Dawn is one of the few lucky artists to hit the ground running in the early days of her career. With her first solo exhibition in October 2008 being such a massive ‘sell-out’ success, she’s quickly established herself as a household name in Northern Ireland. In fact, as Dawn’s popularity has grown her impact on a much higher level is starting to be felt. Dawn creates quirky, colourful and bright paintings, all based on different animal themed characters and selected purely for her love of animals. She wants her work to put a smile on people’s faces and she likes to think her paintings can draw people in by introducing them to a completely new side of art. She doesn’t believe all art should assume there must be more to it and so, with her work, she ensures no hidden meanings – what you see is really what you get! www.dawncrothers.com 6 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

The Consumer Council
There for Holywood
Antoinette McKeown, Chief Executive, Consumer Council on the background of the organisation and their ability to make your voice heard in the issues that really matter.
‘ The Consumer Council was set up in 1985
to bring about change to benefit Northern Ireland’s consumers by making their voice heard and making it count. We do this in two ways; through educating consumers and by handling complaints. The Consumer Council has a statutory duty to speak up for consumers in the areas of transport, water, energy and food. We educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities and to provide them with the skills they need to make good decisions about their money. The Consumer Council represents consumers across Northern Ireland; the issues they face are also those affecting consumers and businesses in Holywood and the rest of Co. Down and are core priorities. We are focussed on two main priorities; the cost of living for consumers and consumer proficiency. The rising cost of living is a challenge that all consumers and businesses in Co. Down face and we provide practical support showing how to potentially save money by switching utility provider, finding the cheapest oil and petrol and diesel nearby (with our handy online charts) and advice on how to find the safest way to pay for goods and services. 8 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
The Consumer Council also has a strong focus on consumer proficiency. This means ensuring that consumers have knowledge of their rights and the confidence to demand them. We have information leaflets such as Plane Facts advising on what to do if your flight is delayed or cancelled; factsheets when issues emerge such as the Ulster Bank technical crisis, or the closure of BMI Baby. We constantly update this information and respond to consumer need. Our work on Financial Capability (how people understand and manage their money) is also really important to us as we see the practical outcomes of people being able switch bank accounts to ones that better suit their needs, or being able to claim back missold Private Protection Insurance. Many of these resources can be found on our website www.consumercouncil.org.uk and we regularly update consumers through our twitter and facebook sites. The Consumer Council has the legal power to act on your behalf and investigate complaints about transport water or energy. We have information on making a complaint including template letters on our website. After contacting the company concerned if they have not solved the problem or you are not satisfied with their response, you can contact our consumer support team on 0800 121 6022 or through our website. We will contact the company concerned and discuss how we can resolve your complaint and get copies of all correspondence exchanged in relation to your complaint. We will work on your behalf to achieve a fair and satisfactory response and keep you informed at every step of the complaint. Since April 2012, the Consumer Council has helped put £265,000 back in people’s pockets. Any consumers or businesses in Co. Down who think we might be able to help should contact us.’

‘Red Ruby Rouge has always been a home for young designers and we have tried each
year to bring up and coming, little known American designers to the UK and Ireland for those customers looking for unique and inspiring products. Each season we have been on the hunt for beautiful and authentic designs to join our carefully curated collection of wardrobe basics, essential accessories and those lovely luxuries that you never knew you needed but can’t possibly live without.’
Spring 2013
‘This season, we are launching a completely edited collection of designers, all cherry picked to showcase the best and most inspiring of young American talent. Our designers often have a following within the US but have very little if no presence internationally and we work directly with them to tailor their product offering and make it available in the UK and Ireland. Bringing together so many diverse histories and creative influences, we love teaming a boho style fringed leather satchel from Rachel Rose Uruguay with a hand painted silk t-shirt from Brooklyn New York and a graphic fine knit sweater from Canada.‘ ‘Our must haves for spring include our new by Rachel Rose hand painted silks collection – each piece is designed exclusively for Red Ruby Death amd Texas Rouge. We launched Rachel’s designs in 2012 to a hugely positive response from press and customers so to have an exclusive collection just for RRR is very exciting!’

‘Complementing Rachels’ collection, we can’t wait to showcase Death and Texas. True, it has something of a macabre ring to it but if you think sunsets and all things cowboy-equestriana rather than sadness and dust, you’ll have a good idea of what inspires this basic bag line. DNTX pieces are all hand made from heavy waxed canvas, vegetable-tanned harness leather, and a hint of delicate seersucker trim. The versatile Row Tote has already been a big advance order hit so we can’t wait to open up that delivery box…’

Veronica and her daughter Jenna from the Bridal Suite Holywood share their experience on finding the right dress for you and much, much more... ‘For us, its never about just selling a dress. Its not always about the dresses you see in magazines. We offer a consultation with the bride in which we consider all the information on the line, the cut, the colour and the fabric of a dress that will best suit that particular bride, most importantly how we can flatter their own particular body shape. Then, when we look at the size of her bridal party, we can show her all the different colours, shapes and fabrics for her bridesmaids, flower girls and mother of the bride. We try to look at how all these factors will compliment each other and consider how they might look in her wedding photographs. We have built up such a good relationship with all our designers to the extent that they will often tweak dresses to our specification. This is a great plus when someone doesn’t fall 100% in love with one style of a dress. We also have someone who hand dyes fabric and shoes for us... so there’s a lot we can offer people over and above just going out to choose a dress. We offer a dressing service for the bride on the day of the wedding. We also design and sell bouquets and jewellery. We can advise on photographers and florists, help design stationary and give information on protocol for the day. If we just look at the style of dress... there are a lot of practicalities to take into consideration one instance being what type of transport you will have to get into on the day! We have dresses ranging from £600 upwards and can also offer a bespoke service. There are 225 bridal salons in NI and it can be a daunting task when setting out to buy a wedding dress. Many people are so excited and often fall in love with a dress, but they dont know what to do after that to make it their own. We stand over our designs, maintain responsibility throughout and are available for advice whenever the bride needs us.’ ALL

Bespoke Music Solutions ‘We’ve all been to at least one wedding where a cheesy DJ plays novelty songs whilst throwing party games with the bride’s granny. The wedding disco is the last thing your guests will remember about your wedding so it should be top priority. What sets us apart from other wedding DJs is the fact that we are record collectors and music obsessives. We believe that each record should be creatively mixed together and as well as reading the crowd and giving them the best party possible, a good DJ should avoid gaps between records, not to mention talking over them. Our aim is to create an atmosphere like the best house party you’ve ever been at. It’s important for you to be involved in tailoring the night to be exactly the way you want. That is why we welcome lists of all your favourite songs to include in our sets and, equally important, songs that you don’t want to hear. After all, it is YOUR party. For Dj mixes, videos & more info log on to www.bespokemusicsolutions. com. Wedding Special The Beauty Studio team have all the help and advice you need when it comes to making sure you look and feel your absolute best for the aisle and beyond... ‘When organising a wedding the list is endless...flowers, band, caterers etc but who is going to organise you? That is what we are here for, we want you to feel confident and gorgeous on your wedding day so here are some tips to make sure you are preened to perfection: We all know that make up works wonders but it can’t hide everything. Having blemish free, radiant skin will ensure that you are a glowing bride. At The Beauty Studio we would always recommend a course of Hydradermie Facials; they rehydrate and deep cleanse the skin leaving it visibly glowing. This is also a perfect time for you to relax, away from the thoughts of dreaded table plans It is essential to have trials for both your tan and nails (your hen party can provide the perfect opportunity). We would suggest having your tan applied two days before the wedding, regular exfoliation and moisturising will ensure an even, long lasting result. Gelish is a great idea for your nails as it gives you the perfect, chip resistant, two week manicure that will last throughout your honeymoon. Your wedding will be a fun, busy and emotional time with you at the centre of it all, so remember you need to look after you and enjoy every minute of it!’ See you soon, The Beauty Studio Team xx’ 29 Church Rd, TelL 028 9042 2720

Beautiful, glowing, flawless brides... “So he has finally/surprisingly/wonderfully proposed and now (and this is normal) you go into overdrive researching, Googling and planning the big day! I now know this personally, as in January I embraced the role of bride to be and decided to just blitz it and get married within just four months! There are lots of things to think about but for me THE most important aspect is getting your skin in beautiful, glowing, flawless condition.” We have launched a new Yon-Ka facial VITAL-ÉLASTINE. This is an anti-age treatment, targets soft or deeper wrinkles, giving a radiant complexion and will heighten hydration levels and nutrients in the skin. The skin is smoothed and visibly younger. Perfect for the bride as a one off treatment or as part of a course of four for the very important mother of the bride. I have had this facial myself and I promise, you will see the results but you will also feel so relaxed, pampered and destressed (and trust me, after that first conversation about the guest list, you will need destressed!)

kidney beans and chickpeas, drained and rinsed Sea salt and ground black pepper Crusty bread or tortilla chips, crème fraîche and/or coriander Serves 4-6 Place a large cooking pot or flameproof casserole pan over a medium– high heat and add the oil. Add the onion, garlic, carrots, celery and peppers. Stir through the spices – the chilli powder, smoked paprika and cumin. Fry the mixture for 7–8 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Add the meat to the pan and fry gently until lightly browned, stirring regularly. Pour in the chopped tomatoes and then fill both the tins with hot water and pour this in also. Add the Worcestershire sauce and treacle.
Pour in the kidney beans and chickpeas, bring the mixture to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring every now and then. When the chilli has reduced, season with sea salt and ground black pepper. Serve in deep bowls with crusty bread or tortilla chips, a dollop of crème fraîche and coriander leaves, if you wish.
Moroccan Spiced Lamb Shoulder 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground turmeric
Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon Small bunch of coriander, leaves picked and stalks roughly chopped 1.5kg (3lb 5oz) lamb shoulder Sea salt and ground black pepper Couscous and lemon wedges, to serve Serves 6 Preheat the oven to 160°C (325°F), Gas Mark 3. Place the olive oil, ginger, cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, lemon zest and juice, chopped coriander stalks and a good pinch of salt into a mini blender. Blitz to form a smooth paste, or use a pestle and mortar. Put the lamb shoulder onto two large pieces of foil and make lots of incisions in the meat with a knife. Rub the paste all over. Add a couple of tablespoons of water, then seal the foil around the lamb, leaving a little pocket of air above it. Place on a baking sheet and cook for 4 hours. After this time, open the foil and baste the lamb with its juices. Leaving the foil open, cook for a further hour, by which time the lamb should be meltingly tender. Turn off the oven but leave the lamb inside to rest. Serve in slices with plain couscous garnished with coriander leaves, as a tasty spring/summer Sunday dinner, with a lemon wedge on the side.

The Best of Seasonal Produce
Scallop & foie gras with toasted focaccia, red wine jus & red onion compote
A well respected and revered name nationwide, throughout its time on the High Street, Fontana has never veered from its main aim; to serve fresh, seasonal produce cooked with passion. We spoke to owner Colleen Bennett to find out more.
‘
W
e opened on a lovely early summers day in June almost 15 yers ago now. We remember it well as it was one of those rare, glorious summer days that we do get far too infrequently!’ says Colleen. Colleen had been in the kitchen of such talented chefs as Jeanne and Paul Rankin, working alongside Nial McKenna who has also achieved culinary success here in Northern Ireland as well as the hugely admired Robbie Millar from Shanks and the team of Rose Gray & Ruth Rodgers owners of the River Café on the banks of the Thames in Hammersmith, London. Colleen’s first venture into catering was turning her bedroom into the “Dogwood Café” at the age of 7 with an Easy Bake oven and old apple crates for tables. ‘Surprisingly the old apple crates are bang on trend again!’ says Colleen. But following her remarkable background and experience in these iconic kitchens throughout the UK and Ireland, the time had come to go it alone and open up her own place. And it began with the very simplest of aims, ‘The mission for me and my team has always been to source the best of seasonal produce, cook it with some passion and serve it with a genuine warmth and care to detail.’ Colleen has a great rapport with suppliers and adores the drive to the farms about Comber to get the best of local vegetable and salad leaves. While local lobsters arrive on a Wednesday and Friday, Ewings supply top fresh fish on a daily basis. ‘All the team have built up great relationships with the clientele of the restaurant with many being employed for from 8-13 years, making it a rather special and personal welcome back!’ Adapting to the clientele and providing food and menus that not only remained true to the original aim, but were in tune with the times was essential. Customer focus was key and the dining room was as much a crucial part of that focus as the food. ‘In 2008 when the financial crisis took hold we decided to up the comfort level of the room with a complete refurb including lovely linen on the tables, beautiful fabric on the comfortable banquette seating and original local art on the walls. This was also the time that we introduced our much loved “Supper Menu” offering 3 courses all evening from 5 pm til late for £19.50.’ The cooking has always been fresh and the team have earned a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin guide, recognising good value quality cooking, year upon year. ‘Our house specialities include the Portavogie prawn risotto, lobster thermidor, thick cut steaks, meltingly gorgeous pork belly and always a great choice of seafood. Fontana is also becoming a sought location for bespoke weddings, christenings, and birthdays with tailored menus for any occasion! The lunch specials offer fantastic value starting from £5.50 for quick, fresh, well cooked dishes that keep our guests returning for more great dining pleasure that won’t hurt the budget.’ 61 High St, Holywood 028 9080 9908 Twitter @fontana61a facebook.com/fontana.colleen 26 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

A Thing of Beauty... Ever dreamt of bringing children’s drawings to life in a keepsake piece of handmade silver or gold? Fear not because Avril Manderson can make that dream a reality. From charms, to brooches, cufflinks to pendants, a child’s creations can now be treasured forever.
‘
E
ight years ago, my nephew, who was 3, came over to visit me in Manchester,’ says Avril. He did lots of cute drawings and when he went home I was left with a pile of drawings. I didn’t know what to do with them, but knew that I somehow wanted to preserve these precious squiggles. It was then that I came up with the idea of making pieces of silver jewellery that looked just like his drawings.’ Avril’s career route began off the silversmithing track with a degree in Government & Law and a Masters in Communication, PR and Advertising and with spells at the NI Assembly and as press officer in Manchester for a Member of the European Parliament. It was while working in Manchester that she took a nightclass - City & Guilds in silversmithing. Even as a child, she always loved making things, and this class allowed her to use her imagination in precious metal design. Avril makes each piece of jewellery herself - from the initial design to the final polish which she feels is very important. All the jewellery is made from sterling silver, including all chains and fastenings. Each piece is sent to Birmingham Assay Office where it is tested for the purity and quality of silver uses, then stamped with the Assay Hallmark as well as Avril’s ‘AM’ designer mark. ‘This means my clients get a really personal service from beginning to end. If a customer can imagine a piece of jewellery then I can usually make it. From cufflinks that look just like the tractor a child has drawn at his first day at school, to a brooch for Grandma made up of sketches from all of her six grandchildren, the possibilities are endless. I have even made jewellery from drawings and computer graphics from adults. One lady who lived beside a picturesque mountain range in Scotland sent me a photo of the view from her window. I then made her a brooch that looked just like ‘her’ mountains!’ Avril has created pieces for clients in Canada, USA, Australia, Hong Kong, South Africa, France and many other far-flung places. ‘Children’s drawings from around the world differ a bit but in essence they love drawing animals and people the most. I love hearing client’s feedback about my work. A thank-you card from a lady in Brighton told me how her grandmother wept with joy at her 80th birthday after being given a brooch made from the drawings of her four great-grandchildren. I wish I was a fly on the wall when my clients opened the box!’ Avril is also in the process of launching a range of ready to wear silver jewellery using fine silver wire, along with sterling silver sheet, to create a range of animal jewellery. Phone 07808 368953 avril@amjewellery.co.uk www.amjewellery.co.uk Avril also has a permanent exhibition of her work in the Ards Craft Centre.

Family Values
Leslie McCullough
Celebrating the 30th birthday
Local Legend
Art and Home is a family business that has been on Holywood’s High Street for 55 years. An incredible institution and an essential element of the local art scene, we caught up with brother and sisters John and Emma to find out the history. ‘Our Dad, Leslie McCullough opened this business in 1958,’ says John. ‘He went to work for the McKimm Bros when he was 14 which was a paint, wallpaper and glazing business on Bloomfield Avenue. He was sent to manage this place when he was 17 in ’58. He worked there until he took it over 20 years later.’ The picture framing aspect of the business crept in in the late 60s early 70s. Leslie was a keen photographer and artist himself and started framing his own work. ‘By the mid 70s he was working for the likes Kenneth Webb, Tom Kerr and other well known artists. There were’t too many people doing framing then. Art materials crept in too so that grew and the nature of the business started to change. When B&Q an Homebase arrived it made it a tough trading environment so around 16 years ago we stopped the paint and wallpaper altogether.’ John and Emma have been working in the family business from a very early age in summer holidays, helping out with the customers and framing. They relished the opportunity and loved it instantly. Sadly Leslie passed away four years ago which was a huge loss. ‘It really was such a big loss to us,’ says John, ‘and to so many people in the town too. They even lowered the flag in the town the day he died. He was very well thought of. Our mother Maureen was up until a few years ago also a familiar face in Art & Home.’ So with a new era of the business, John and Emma have maintained their fathers infectious enthusiasm for what they do. ‘70% of our customers are repeat trade which reflects the service they get here. We get the Sullivan kids, local art groups in, we do talks with them on framing. At the beginning of the 90s The Fine Art Guild introduced an exam to regulate the framing business and I was the youngest person in Ireland to get it at the age of 22 and only the 6th in Ireland to get it. I’d been working with Dad so long he taught me everything he knew.’ Art and Home have customers from as far away as Scotland who send their embroidery to be framed such is the quality. The art materials they offer are very comprehensive and the artist can buy everything they need here. ‘It’s taken years to build it to this stage,’ says Emma, ‘which is now over two floors and we have the gallery for local and international artists. ‘If it’s a nice piece of art there’s a place for it in the gallery. Art should be for everyone and there’s a good price range from £100 upwards. We had Timmy Mallet here who is a respected artist. He had his first exhibition in NI here. We have our website artandhomeweb.com, Facebook, Pinterest and our Youtube channel with all our user manuals on there for resources and info so people can watch how to do things.’ Art and Home are involved heavily in the local community, helping out with Culture Night’s Cow Parade and the Christmas cracker pull. They are very passionate about people supporting local business. ‘There are a lot of things unique to Holywood and it has a nice feel. The people are just fantastic. Everyone talks to everyone and when we lost Dad so many people came in here and had such nice things to say. We really want to say thank you to our customers for sticking with us and continuing to do so, we really appreciate all your support.’ 145-147 High Street.
