Visit the RSPB

The Belfast Harbour Reserve is where the wild things are.

Welcome : Firstly let us wish all our readers a very Happy New

Year! It’s unbelievable how quickly the festive break flies past . Is it because everyone is so busy visiting house to house catching up with family and friends? Or is it the sherry? Either way we hope everyone had a belter. Also with issue one of Bloom done and dusted, we would like to thank everyone for the wonderful feedback. Support from day one has been fantastic and we really appreciate that the people of Holywood have got behind what we are trying to do, and that is promote Holywood! In fact in this edition you will find the principles of the Holywood Buy Local campaign which is just the beginning of how the local traders are building a new approach. But that new approach involves you too and we’ll have more on this campaign in the coming months. What strikes us about what we are hearing is that this new approach already has foundations in many peoples minds here. Local traders especially feel so passionately about the town they live and work in, their enthusiasm for the buy local ethos is palpable. But with the diverse and accommodating array of shops, trades and businesses available on the doorstep, it wont be long building in momentum and the trickle down effect for the town’s prosperity will be a thing to behold. So as we enter another difficult year ahead, now more than ever before is when the local people can come together and with a bit of luck, the town can go into the following year with a spring in the step. Or with the remainder of the festive sherry, a bounce! Enjoy the magazine and see you next month.

Get winter ready with help from the Consumer Council - The Consumer Council is calling on all consumers to take stock and to consider what steps they need to take to be winter ready. Antoinette McKeown, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council explains ‘Once again we are advising consumers to be as prepared as possible in the event of severe weather occurring. Our handy ‘Weather the Winter’ leaflet gives consumers tips on what they should do to help protect against frozen or burst pipes, a power cut or disrupted transport services. Simple actions such as checking your oil regularly, ensuring your pre payment meter is topped up with sufficient credit, insulating your pipes and tanks and knowing where your stop tap/value is and how to turn it off will help minimise any potential problems should we have bad weather. Free copies of our ‘Weather the Winter’ leaflet will be available at local libraries, Citizens Advice Bureaus, independent advice centres and constituency offices and can also be downloaded at www.consumercouncil.org.uk/publications or by calling 0800 121 6022.’

Insight Into The NI Dyslexia Centre

The N I Dyslexia Centre was established in 1998. We spoke to them to get some insight into the work and services they can provide: ‘What is Dyslexia? Dyslexia is a language learning difficulty which affects much more than reading. Learners may have difficulties with spelling, writing skills, recalling sequences like times tables, and phone numbers or instructions. Maths and organizational skills may be problematic. There is often a puzzling difference between their ability and the work they produce. They are often wrongly labelled as ‘stupid’ or ‘lazy’, become frustrated and lose their self-esteem and motivation. Our society loses so much if their many creative talents and skills are not recognised and developed. How can we help? The answer is thorough assessment and sympathetic teaching matched to a student’s way of learning. All Centre tutors are professionally qualified and have extensive experience in teaching learners of all ages with dyslexia. We provide assessment, individual tuition, Parents’ Courses, training to schools and organisations and OCR Level 5 and Level 7 Diplomas for teachers.’ Some comments on the centres Parents’ Courses include: “Very worthwhile, interesting and valuable.” “Would recommend to anyone, has given me confidence in working with my child.” The next course begins on 30th January and runs for five Thursday evenings from 7 to 10 pm. For more information contact the centre 17a Upper Newtownards Road. Tel 028 9065 4670 nidyslexiacentre.co.uk 6 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Bloom: News Time Travel Legend Lives On With Your Help

Back in October of 2010, film maker George Clarke of Yellow Fever Productions created a Youtube video that very quickly became the most media covered and talked about video online. Chaplin’s Time Traveller is an Internet urban legend surrounding footage from the premiere of the 1928 silent film The Circus written and directed by Charlie Chaplin. Available on the 2004 DVD as a special feature, a pedestrian woman can be seen walking in the background while holding what appears to be an electronic device close to her ear. The woman went seemingly unnoticed until October 19th, 2010, when George uploaded a blog to his YouTube channel arguing that this woman was a time traveler who was holding up a cellphone to her ear. At present, this video has more than 6.4 million views. ‘I compiled a blog post,’ says George, ‘noting that the video had received more than 4 million views and 40,000 comments in the 12 days it had been online. I also received more than 70,000 additional emails with theories and requests. Some of these theories suggested that she had a toothache and was holding an ice pack to her face, that the footage was doctored or that she was a government agent who held some sort of advanced technology. On YouTube, there are approximately 600 videos featuring various explanations, speculations or parodies of my original video.’ With this new documentary, George’s aim is to talk with, interview, meet and film the most interesting, and theoretical people who have been in touch with him over the past two years including great scientific minds like Stephen Hawking. ‘Obviously, as an independent production we are going to need a great lot of support in making this work. And whether you’re a fan of the mystery or not, your help and support can make it work! Even if you can’t donate, just telling the world about our mission can give us an extra push into getting this done, and done right. Once our project is completed, our hope is to hold the premiere of the documentary in Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood - the sacred spot of Chaplins Time Traveller!’ You can find out the full story and how to donate at www.indiegogo.com/helpmefind

Where the Wild Things Are The fantastic RSPB Belfast Harbour Reserve is the only site in Northern Ireland where visitors can see unparalleled views of wild, globally threatened birds thriving in the midst of heavy industry. And it’s right on your doorstep.

T

he reserve is located just 10 minutes from Belfast city centre in the heart of the industrial zone of Belfast Harbour Estate. In 1912, the Titanic sailed down Victoria Channel in front of the reserve as it left Belfast on its fatal voyage. Ships, planes and cranes frame the skyline, but the reserve itself is a haven for wildlife, and is an internationally important site for birds. The RSPB manage the lagoon to create ideal conditions for wading birds and ducks in autumn and winter, and for breeding terns in summer. The Window on Wildlife offers stunning views across the lagoon and unparalleled close-up views of wild birds like godwits, terns, redshank, and lapwing. Two outdoor hides are always open, offering alternative views across the lagoon. RSPB staff and volunteers can answer any questions you have or help you use the binoculars and telescopes provided by RSPB. There are also lots of special events for families and children throughout the year and two Konik ponies have just arrived at the reserve to help out with a spot of gardening! This breed has its origins in Poland and has been selected due to their hardy and robust form and their specialist adaptations to feeding on wetland vegetation. These horses are used on many other conservation projects throughout the UK including other RSPB reserves such as Loch of Strathbeg. It is hoped their grazing of vegetation will prohibit the regeneration of willow scrub and help maintain the habitat to suit nesting and feeding waders. Chris Sturgeon RSPB Belfast Harbour Warden said, ‘We want to make the reserve an even better place for people and get the word out about what a special place this is. We hope that over the next year we can improve the facilities for visitors, making Belfast’s Window on Wildlife a place we can all be proud of.’

10 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Things to do in Winter • See large numbers of wildfowl that come to the reserve to spend the winter: teals, wigeons and shelducks. • Look out for smaller birds like siskins and lesser redpolls in the trees. • Stay snug and warm in the observation room while you watch the action on the lagoon.

Entry: Free of charge, though donations to help the RSPB continue their work at the reserve are gratefully received. Opening Times: Hides open at all times Window on Wildlife open: Tue - Sat 9am – 5pm Sun 1:00pm – 5pm Airport Road West Belfast Co Antrim BT3 9ED Tel: 028 9046 1458

With the new year upon us, resolutions are the big promises we make to ourselves. But statistics show that most people give up by the 9th of January, so we spoke to some local experts who have plenty of advice and motivation to help you see it through when it comes to keeping fit and healthy.

The Beauty Studio - A New Year Skin Routine

‘Cold days and hot houses at this time of year are a recipe for disaster for your skin, it can leave skin dry, dull and lifeless. Now is the perfect time of year to look after your skin and revamp your skin care routine, this is the New Year’s resolution you can stick to! Changing your routine, can seem like a daunting task but it doesn’t have to be. Often your routine does not require a complete overhaul, just adding one or two products or changing how you use your existing products can make a massive difference to the appearance of your skin. One the easiest ways to get an effective routine that fits into your life is to get professional advice. A facial is not only a gorgeous treat for you and a great boost for your skin but it is also the perfect way for one of our highly trained therapists to prescribe a unique skin care routine for you, ensuring you are using the most appropriate products in the most effective way. Remember too much product or too little product can be the difference between fab skin or drab skin! At The Beauty Studio we have over 20 years experience advising local clients on their skin care, at this time of year we would recommend The Beaute Neuve facials, that are suitable for all skin types. The Beaute Neuve is a course of three facials that removes the dead cells that are responsible for dull, dry complexions. It utilises fruit acids and pure Vitamin C to brighten and rehydrate the skin, it also reduces pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles leaving skin firmer and brighter, the perfect way to kick start your New Year’s resolution!’ 29 Church Rd, Holywood. Time for a Detox. Why is it needed? Heidi from Iona explains: ‘The kidneys are responsible for removing waste products from the bloodstream, as well as regulating levels of calcium, salt, sugar and water. Wastes are filtered in the kidneys, then expelled via the urinary tract. Under-functioning in this area can lead to impurities remaining in the bloodstream, contributing to skin problems, puffy baggy eyes, fluid retention and fatigue. It is therefore vital that the kidneys and urinary tract are working as well as possible. There are a number of herbs , known for their positive effect on kidney and bladder function. They can help relieve fluid retention and contribute to an overall cleansing of the system, without strong detoxification reactions. These herbs are available as simple herbal tea or as tincture or tablets. Their names are : Dandilion, Golden Rod, Birch Leaves, Horsetail,Yarrow and Viola Tricolor.’ Iona, 27 Church Road, Holywood BT18 9BU. 028 9042 8597 14 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

Lose Weight and Feel Great This New Year Weight loss is the number one resolution for 75 per cent of adults, but most have given up by the end of the month. Slimming World Consultants, Michelle Murray and Sally Moore who run the Knocknagoney and Holywood groups, offer their top tips to stay on track with your resolutions this year. ‘Tips to avoid weight loss traps: • Losing weight just because it’s January: Make sure your motivation to lose weight is more than just ‘because it’s the New Year’. Think about your reasons for wanting to lose weight. Making small changes that you’re confident you can keep up will increase your chances of success. • Going on a ‘fad’ diet: Following the latest craze may work in the short term, but these diets are usually very restrictive and impractical in the Sophie, Young Slimmer & Sally who met long term. They’re often based around extremes such as banning whole Jeff Brazier at the Slimming World finals food groups or replacing them with liquid foods. This approach can lead to hunger and deprivation which eventually cause the slimmer to lapse, binge, feel guilty and gain more weight than they’ve lost. • Going hungry: Slimming doesn’t have to mean starving. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, encourages members to eat lots of satisfying and naturally low-fat foods like pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish and plenty of fruit and vegetables so they’re never hungry and it’s easy to enjoy all their favourite dishes like spaghetti Bolognese, roast dinners and even chips. No foods are banned so there’s no guilt or deprivation. • Joining a gym: Many people join a gym in the mistaken belief that exercise alone will shift their excess pounds. But research shows that exercise combined with a healthy eating programme is the most effective route. At Slimming World members are encouraged to build up slowly and incorporate just a small amount of physical activity into their daily routine. Setting unrealistic targets: Set yourself achievable short-term and long-term goals, such as losing 1-2lbs a week, losing a stone in a couple of months or reaching your goal weight in 12 months. Unrealistic targets will work to demotivate you and make you less likely to succeed. • Going it alone: Research shows that slimmers are more successful at losing and maintaining their weight when they have the support and advice of likeminded people in a group setting. Slimming World members share their ups and downs every week. So, if you have made it your New Year’s resolution to lose weight this January, you’re more than welcome at our Slimming World groups. We’re confident that with the combination of a delicious eating plan and a super support network you’ll be successful, and even better you’ll be able to keep the weight off so your New Year’s resolution will last a lifetime – not just to the end of the month.’ For more information contact Michelle or Sally on 07753 745301 & 07738 713436

Stretch into the New Year with Claire Ferry ‘Ever wanted to try yoga but not sure what’s involved? There are so many classes on offer from Astanga (powerful, flowing poses) and Bikram (hot yoga) to Hatha, which is a catch-all term. Classes start with simple poses, moving towards more advanced ones, and end with relaxation and breathing techniques. The classes can be hard work but you leave the class feeling lighter, calmer and with a sense of wellbeing. A large trial from York University proved yoga is effective for low back pain, and a recent symposium in London brought together research on the benefits of yoga for mental health. Whether you are looking for relaxation, greater suppleness and strength, solutions for chronic aches and pains, or just a chance to ‘be’ every now and again, yoga can be for you.’ Classes start on 7 January at 31a Ravenhill Park, the Crescent Arts Centre, Queens PEC and the new Skainos Building on the Newtownards Rd. Mews-ic To Holywood’s Ears Northern Ireland homes are undergoing a decadent style make-over like never before with the launch of a fabulous new interior design consultancy The Mews Interiors in Holywood.

T

he new venture which launched in September 2012 is the brainchild of interior designer and business woman Fiona Hunter, who has run the successful three-storey Mews gift shop, since 2006, stocking a broad range of bespoke home and gift wares, clothing, reclaimed furniture and antiques. The consultancy is an extension of the current offering, encompassing all areas of interiors from furniture, hand-woven fabrics and wall coverings, to complete residential and commercial interior design. Fiona has over ten years’ experience in interior consultancy, with clients on a global scale, and regularly travels world-wide for inspiration and products, and attributes the slow-down of the housing market to the renewed interest in interior design. Speaking at the launch, Fiona Hunter explains, ‘I am absolutely delighted to launch our new interior design consultancy. This is something we have been working towards and planning for a long time. We have been offering the service on a small scale for many years, but with increased demand we decided to officially extend our operation. With the slow-down in the housing market, we have found that more and more people want to invest in their properties. They tend to research what they want, come and talk to us, we then work with them in partnership to make their vision a reality.’ The new service has already proved a hit with local business and homeowners inundating the new service with enquiries. ‘What we have already experienced has been phenomenal, from clients, both new and old wanting anything from advice on room styles to our complete 360 degree service which includes upholstering, bespoke carpentry and kitchen cabinetry to complete room and home design,’ Fiona continued. ‘We have negotiated contracts with some of the best fabric suppliers in the world who have provided us with the materials to rival any design house in the province, including Zoffany and Sanderson.’ The Mews is nestled in the heart of Holywood’s oldest courtyard, Audley Court, which dates back to 1750 and radiates the sumptuous style which Fiona has become famed for and is designed to put clients at ease from the moment they walk in the door. Fiona and the team have created a refreshingly welcoming environment intended to promote a totally stress-free and creative approach to interior consultancy, designed to suit projects of all sizes and budgets. Fiona concluded: ‘We have worked hard to ensure that all items in our repertoire range in price from the lower end of the market to the more bespoke. We look forward to working closely with clients, new and old, in our new venture.’ To book a consultation with Fiona Hunter at The Mews Interiors call 028 9042 4714 or visit them on Facebook. www.bloommagazine.co.uk 19

Spanish Chicken with Chorizo & Garlic

Take One Pot

Rose Harissa Pork with Quinoa & Dates

The beauty of cooking in one pot is that it involves minimal fuss. All the recipes in Georgina Fuggle’s book can be created in just one single vessel – the roasting tin, the casserole, the deep frying pan and the baking dish. For when you don’t want to spend too much time in the kitchen, you can make a speedy risotto or a quick and hearty soup. When you are hankering after a slow-cooked meal, there is Plump Whiting, Butterbean and Red Pepper Stew and Burgundy Beef Shin with Stilton Dumplings. Or perhaps vegetarian friendly dishes or a variety of side dishes. The recipes cater to cooks of all levels of expertise and include tips on how to get ahead, recipe variations and serving ideas. Whether you’re cooking a family meal or a quick supper, Take One Pot delivers satisfying and comforting food. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. Heat the oil in the base of a shallow, ovenproof pot over a high heat. Season your meat and, using tongs, sear the pork on all sides until beautifully golden. 1 tablespoon olive oil Remove from the pot and set 300–400g pork tenderloin aside to rest. 1 medium onion, peeled and Add a drop more oil to the pot roughly chopped if needed and fry the onion for 1½ tbsp rose harissa paste a few minutes until translucent, 100g quinoa then stir through the harissa. 80g dried dates, pitted and Add the quinoa, dates, tomatoes roughly chopped and just 300ml of the hot stock. 3 large, ripe tomatoes roughly Give everything a good muddle, chopped season well and simmer for 400ml hot chicken stock 4 tablespoons roughly chopped 10 minutes. Stir through the remaining stock and half the flat-leaf parsley Sea salt and freshly ground black parsley once the 10 minutes are up. pepper Place the pork fillet on top Serves 2-3 of your quinoa mixture and

place the pot in the oven for 20 minutes, until the quinoa is plump and the pork is cooked through. Remove from the oven and allow the dish to sit for 5–7 minutes so the pork can rest and ‘come to’. Sprinkle generously with the rest of the parsley, and serve the pork sliced on a bed of quinoa.

Preheat the oven to 180°C/ gas mark 4. Lightly grease a 1.5–2-litre ovenproof dish with a little olive oil. Put the fish chunks in a large bowl and sprinkle over the plain flour. Gently toss so each piece of fish is lightly coated. Add the vegetables, white sauce, dill (reserving a little for the garnish) and lemon zest. Gently combine so that the sauce is spread

throughout the mixture. Season and transfer to the ovenproof dish. Brush one side of the filo pastry sheets with butter and then scrunch up, leaving the buttered side facing upwards. Place on top of the fish mixture. There is no need to be too neat; the more abstract, the more beautiful, in my opinion. Give a good twist of black pepper, a sprinkling of salt and a little dusting of the reserved dill. Bake in the oven for 30–35 minutes, until the pastry is golden on top and the sauce is bubbling below. Remove from the oven and allow the fish to continue cooking for 5 minutes or so before serving.

Fry the chicken legs on both sides until they are crisp and golden, then transfer to a waiting plate. Keep the heat on high and add the chorizo chunks to the pot. Fry for a minute on each side and remove from the casserole with a slotted spoon so as to leave their oil behind. Add the onion and leeks and fry in the delicious chorizo oil. Reduce the heat, cover and soften the vegetables for 3–4 minutes, but check that they don’t catch on the bottom of the pot. Add the smoked paprika, saffron, garlic halves, thyme, wine and chicken stock to the pot along with the chicken and chorizo. Season well, cover and simmer over a medium heat for 30 minutes. Let the pot do the work; yours is almost done. Stir in the butter beans and cook for a further 10 minutes before serving with a baked potato or two.

Preparing for a new Pet at home Tom Fitzsimons of local veterinary clinic Garden Lodge gives us his advice on welcoming a new furry friend safely into your home.

Vaccinations

Puppies and kittens are usually protected in their first few weeks of life by antibodies that they have received from their mother’s milk. However, as time progresses this level of immunity declines leaving them open to a range of infectious diseases. Vaccinations are therefore required to stimulate the young animal’s immune system to produce its own protective antibodies against these conditions. Veterinary surgeons generally recommend beginning a course of vaccinations at approximately 8 weeks of age with a second injection being administered 2-4 weeks later giving your pet protection for its first year of life. Regular booster vaccinations will also be required during your pet’s life.

Worming and Flea control

At any one time it is estimated that 1 in 10 dogs and 1 in 5 cats have a flea infestation. Under ideal conditions 1 flea will develop into 1,000 in 21 days. There are now a wide range of products available that have a prolonged action, are safe for the pet, safe for the environment and safe for in contact children. Shampoos only treat at the time, as soon as they are rinsed off they stop working. But a new generation of ‘spot on’ preparations have a wide parasite control with a prolonged action – many of them not only control fleas, but mites, lice, roundworms, hookworms and lungworms. With regards to worms, regular treatment is the only way to stay parasite free. Worms can be controlled by following a few simple rules: worm your pet regularly, clean up faeces and try to prevent your dog from eating slugs and snails.

Insurance

Many people ask if it’s worth getting their animal insured. The simple answer is YES. Every year, on average, 1 in 3 animals suffers illness or injury, so unexpected veterinary bills can arise at any time. The ability of every veterinary surgeon to offer the best care and manage long term or life threaten24 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

ing ailments has improved greatly. It can be costly and we frequently see clients agonising regarding their pets treatment. With appropriate insurance you can ensure that your pet can get the best of care without heart wrenching financial decisions becoming a limiting factor.

Neutering

Some owners think that we vets are obsessed with their animal’s nether regions, but there’s a good reason for this. Having your animal neutered will remove their ability to breed and add to the already burgeoning animal population here. No matter how homely your cuddly pet may be, when they detect a female, nature takes over. Secondly, and in my opinion, most importantly having your male or female pet neutered greatly reduces the likelihood of serious or life threatening illnesses such as testicular or ovarian cancer from developing.

Microchipping

Having your animal microchipped will at least mean that they have a reliable and permanent means of identification that is readily readable and instantly accessible to all veterinary professionals. The procedure involves implanting a tiny microchip about the size of a grain of rice between the shoulder blades. The microchip carries a 15 digit code, which is unique to your animal. This code, together with information about your pet and your contact details are stored on a central database. This means that should your pet go missing, when found, the chip can be read easily using a scanner and you can be speedily reunited. A Dynamic & Subtle Flavour Journey Rayanne House was opened 22 years ago by Conor’s parents and they had quickly established the guesthouse and restaurant to be among the best in Northern Ireland. Bernie and Conor had been living in New York for 10 years but in 2002, they returned home and bought Rayanne House to continue the legacy. ‘The original building dating back to 1883 needed a little TLC,’ says Bernie. ‘We have sympathetically refurbished and extended to retain all the wonderful period features and also providing all modern amenities. We have 10 ensuite bedrooms, a beautiful period dining room and are currently delighted to be ranked number 1 on Trip Advisor for both the accommodation and the restaurant. Rayanne House is also the only 5 Star guesthouse in Northern Ireland.’ Chef Conor Mc Clelland’s 25-year experience has been gathered from a variety of world locations. From London to Germany and from France to New York, he is renowned for his creative and imaginative menus. He was ranked 4th Best Chef in Ulster at the Food and Wine Restaurant of the year awards 2012. ‘Conor personally sources and prepares each dish thus ensuring the highest quality and consistency,’ says Bernie. ‘His passion to create each delicious course of his seasonal menus is inspired by the abundance and quality of local produce. He is highly celebrated for the dynamic and subtle flavour journey he will take you on in one evening. You can expect great game, brilliant beef, perfect poultry or fabulous fish!’ You can choose from the Seasonal Menu, the seven course Tasting Menu or the Titanic Menu. For something a little different you could try their original, extensive and award winning breakfast menu which is also open to non-residents. Morning delights range from Homemade Prune Soufflé on a Puree of Fresh Green Figs to start, leaving room for the Homemade Rayanne Breakfast Burger; Spiced Sausage Patty topped with a Fried Egg and Relish served between toasted Muffin Buns. Where possible the best of local produce is gathered to create an eclectic seasonal menu of classic and modern dishes all prepared by Conor who has a genuine love and passion for cooking and they strive to make all their guests feel special whether it be a warm Northern Irish welcome from Bernie or a private party cooked by Conor. The emphasis is to provide the best of quality with a professional and relaxing atmosphere in an elegant, period dining room featuring a curved glass window with views down to Belfast Lough. A New Dimension Justin Vaughan’s distinctive style of paintings are easily recognisable. His work has been exhibited mainly in Belfast but also in private collections around the globe. Now he has issued wonderful, high quality reproduction prints. ‘I studied art at the University of Ulster,’ says Justin. After leaving University I first started selling my paintings with Charles Gilmore Fine Art when he had the gallery in Holywood. My style is known as ‘Synthesism’ or in other words taking a part real, part imaginative view on my subject matter. From French themed figurative work to local landscapes, rural life and town scenes, people and places all develop different characteristics and it is often a romantic ideal or a rural scene of a lifestyle from yesteryear that features in my paintings, soft and vibrant in colour and content.’ Evidently Justin’s extraordinary painting style requires an incredible amount of patience and concentration. The technique involves underlaying colours on canvas until the final smooth and aesthetically fine paint finish can be achieved. Crucially, Justin only uses the finest quality oil paints which is vital to ensure the colours will remain beautiful and durable for many years. Justin spent several years living and working in the rural West of Ireland in a small town called Clifden. But now he’s back living back in Northern Ireland and inspiration comes from daily life, as he explains. ‘Local scenes often capture my imagination, normally I look for a scene that will form a good composition and my ‘Bushmills’ painting is a good example of recent work. I used old photographs and a visit with my own camera to create the actual scene. The countless hours I spent in the university life drawing classes helped me create all the many different characters that exist in my paintings.’ It’s these scenes of rural life and rhythmical, architectural landscapes inspired by his time in Connemara and further afield that have cemented Justin’s place as one of the most unique artists to emerge from Northern Ireland for many years. Now Justin has issued fantastic reproduction prints of his work. Having just gone on sale a few weeks ago, it is a unique opportunity to invest into an equally unique and talented artist whose intricate and time consuming work can now be seen in all its glory. Such is the clarity and richness of colour, Justin’s work will confound and inspire the senses in equal measure. Prints available from The Yard Gallery, 102-104 High Street, Holywood. Local Legend

The Corner Shop

Herron’s on Church Road is a prime example of how a local business has diversified to offer their customers what they need to great success. So much so they’ve been doing it for 45 years. originally started in 1967 by my mum ‘ Itandwasdad’, says proprietor Edmund Herron.

‘I took it over 24 years ago and I’ve been here since. It has been renovated over the years, it used to be a house and we all lived upstairs above the shop. My mum and dad bought the house next door then knocked a wall through into the old parlour and extended the space. In 1991 the total block of three houses was knocked down and the building that now stands was built.’ Edmund has been a part of the family business from a very early age. Even before he was tall enough to see over the counter! ‘I started working on the shop when I was a young boy. I used to stand on a crate and serve along with my sisters, we were drafted in from an early stage! Everyone mucked in, it’s always been the family business.’ Being involved in the town from such an early age, Edmund has seen Holywood grow over the years. ‘There has been a lot of changes in Holywood. It’s a very different town, there are so many individual independent businesses and you can pick up so many things here. There’s currently a big push to shop locally which is great. The campaign has to be a big effort, no one wants to see closed shops. It’s very important to support it and keep people shopping in the town.’ Aligned with his support of the campaign is the items he stocks in the shop. His aim is to try to offer a bit of everything. ‘I get as much feedback from the customers as I can to see what they want and need. Fruit and vegetables sell really well. We only started out selling a few apples and oranges for the office workers and it’s grown

very well by demand. Its all local produce too of course as much as we can.’ That level of meeting demand with customer service extends to many elements. Herron’s offers pay point for electric, sells logs and sticks, general groceries, sweets, lottery, magazines, gas. Anything you might need to nip out for that is only a short distance from your door. Even the old jars of sweets from the old days, still sold by the quarter of course! It is this level of customer service along with the family work ethic that has seen them serve the people of Holywood for decades. ‘We get regular customers in every day that I’ve known since I was in nursery school. It’s the same faces coming in, I know many of them on first name terms and now their kids are coming in. My staff are mostly family which is great. My mum still works here and I work with her every day along with my wife, my two sons, my daughter on her way home from school, my nephew at the weekend and I’ve two other part time staff who have been here for a while too. It’s long hours, and it’s a demanding job that you have to keep working at and give the customers what they want. And speaking of which, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal customers for their valued custom and wish them a very Happy New Year.’
