So that’s another year done and dusted. Crazy. Its become a but of a cliché to say “that flew in”, or “I don’t know where the time goes”. But that year flew in, I don’t know where the time goes. Working on Bloom, the year is mapped out in blocks of deadlines for all sorts from advertising to print to interviews and so on. Once you hurdle one it’s on to the next and all of a sudden the year is zooming past. But over the course of the year you never know who you are going to meet or hear from. We get people emailing and phoning all the time with news, events and projects that are going on right across the community and it’s a great buzz being able to share them every single month because then we get feedback from that and so it grows. So although we have some sort of rough plan for the magazine every month scribbled down on the back of an envelope somewhere, we can never ever account for the people that get in touch and blow our minds with yet another great thing that we transfer to your brains via the medium of paper. And I suppose that all falls nicely into that other cliché, time flies when you’re having fun. Happy New Year everyone.

Bloom:New Year Opportunites shine bright like a diamond! Slimming World Consultants are well known for being the most dedicated when it comes to real help and support; so winning a special award for doing just that is pretty exceptional. Sally Moore and Michelle Murray have been running the Slimming World groups at Holywood and Knocknagoney and last year both of them collected a Diamond Award from the company for inspiring dozens of people in the local community to start losing weight and improve their health. The accolade sees Sally and Michelle become Diamond Consultants. This award is given to all Consultants in the UK and Ireland who welcome 60 new members to their group in one month. l-r Michelle & Sally Sally who celebrates 5 years as a Slimming World Consultant opened her group in Holywood in January 2009 and says “This job is so very special. Watching someone change from having no confidence, being embarrassed about their size, and wearing shapeless clothes to someone who looks and feels great, brings its own rewards on a daily basis. To have your work recognised in this way is, I must admit, a very proud moment.” Since opening the Holywood group members have lost an incredible 16,172lbs (1,155stone which is over 7 tonnes!) Michelle, who joined Sally’s Slimming World group as a member herself in September 2010, slimmed down 2&1/2 stone in just 3 months. Sally and Michelle say “Lots of people want to lose weight but they don’t know how or often people have tried losing weight before and failed. But it isn’t them who failed it’s the programme that failed them, either because the diet was too strict and impossible to sustain for more than a few days or because the support just wasn’t there. Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan isn’t a diet, it’s too generous to be called a diet. It helps people make small, easy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat so they make healthier choices and lose weight without ever going hungry or ever feeling like they’re missing out. And each week in group we make sure everyone’s motivated for the week ahead. If you’d like to shine like a Diamond this year why not come along to one of our groups – Holywood group meets every Thursday at 5.30pm & 7.30pm in Holywood CFC Community Hall, 65 Church View and the Knocknagoney group meets every Wednesday at 5.30pm & 7.30pm in Church of Ireland, Aslan Centre, Knocknagoney Road. Phone Sally on 07738713436 or Michelle on 07753745301.
STARTING THE YEAR WITH SMART FEET Knowing when to move towards something, when to move away, and when to stay put. What you focus on grows stronger? What you feed with your attention quickly becomes a focus for your life. What it teaches us is that when we are angry or hate we allow someone we dislike to become really important to us. Even while we tell ourselves what we want most is to distance ourselves, what we are actually doing is drawing them closer, and making them more a part of our life. The people we feel strongest about are really important to us. The stronger we feel about them, the more we invite them into our lives. Are you sure you want them there? If not, are you sure you want to keep them there? Don’t plant trees where they are going to get cut down. We are encouraged as children to try, try, and try again. But it’s important that we don’t just end up banging our heads against a brick wall. If what you’re trying doesn’t seem to be working, maybe your energies would be better off elsewhere? This principle invites you to listen carefully to what’s going on around you, to work out whether the place you are in just doesn’t fit what you are trying to do. You have lots to offer, but maybe it’s worth being somewhere where your offerings will be better received? When in doubt, wait it out. When you think you’ve run out of options, don’t worry, you haven’t. Things always change, and sometimes a lull is just a chance to listen for the next opportunity, the next opening, the next arrival. MEET THE MEAT TEAM
The Irish Moiled
L-R William Farmer, Joel Kerr, Sue Farmer
The Saddlebacks
• In February last year, farmer Joel Kerr contacted William Farmer at The Bay Tree to see if they’d be interested in him rearing an animal on his family farm to serve in the restaurant. This was only the beginning of a unique and fascinating concept.
W
e came up with the nose-to-tail dining night,’ says Joel, ‘where diners could follow the progress of the animal through each stage of the food chain via social networking ending in a 7 course meal using up different cuts of the animal.’ This idea to shorten the supply chain between farmers and end users developed rapidly and a concept was conceived. ‘We had the farmer to produce the animal, our butcher, Owen McMahon to provide us with the cuts and The Bay Tree chefs to create something special with it,’ says William. ‘We eventually came up with Meat Mireille, a 7 course dinner evening at The Bay Tree serving dishes from one cow (a Limousin we named Mireille). Consumers were involved in the process by following Joel’s blog about Mireille’s rearing. The event sold out and feedback was extremely positive - not just for the food, but for the whole concept!’ That night became the blue print for Meat Pop Up, only this time they wanted to use rare and traditional breeds, different types of animals and bring it to different venues. Meat Pop Up means more events, more animals, more breeds and more venues, but the same desire to do everything the way they believe it should be done. 7 dinners, showcasing 7 rare breeds of pig, cow and sheep. ‘We’ll have a few challenging dishes incorporating lesser used cuts,’ says Joel. ‘Each night we’ll have farmers, butchers or chefs to explain the background of the animals or share their experience and expertise so as to carry the education theme through. We’re starting off in The Bay Tree again but haven’t announced the other venues yet so stay posted to the blog!’ William adds, ‘We’re getting the opportunity to work with the people behind some of the excellent produce available to us. We’re also delighted to be calling on the expertise of Owen McMahon, our butcher, even if he doesn’t know the extent of what we’ll be demanding yet!’ The duo have already involved a number of farmers; the sheep from Robert McCauley’s farm in Dromore, the pigs from Kenny and Jennifer Gracey’s farm in Tandragee and the Irish Moiled beef, the only breed native to Northern Ireland, from Robert Boyle’s farm in Millisle. ‘The Irish Moiled Society have offered great support in getting our first night up and running,’ says William. ‘There are so many success stories of local farmers developing award winning products. We’re exploring all the options and aim to incorporate as many farm stories as possible.’ You can follow the progress of the animals on the blog www.meatpopup.co.uk. Tickets for the first three nights of Irish Moiled beef, Saddleback Pork and Southdown lamb are on sale now. Call William at The Bay Tree on 028 9042 1419 or email joel@meatpopup.co.uk for more information. ‘This is an education for us as much as for our diners so we are keen to hear from the readers who would like to share their tips or experience on the farm to fork process, whether it is a farm story from their childhood or a long lost recipe they would like to share, we’d love them to share their knowledge so we can incorporate it into the experience we are offering.’

This month... Now that the indulgence of Christmas is over, we are all feeling a little lethargic and in need of some serious detoxing!! Detoxing doesn’t have to be hard work, in fact you can make it as easy as you like... y Cleanse the body blissfull Why not start with a blissful De-stressing Detoxing Massage? The treatment begins with a full body brushing to stimulate circulation, then using a specific blend of organic juniper, lemon and black pepper we work on both the deep tissues and the lymphatic drainage system to rid your body of toxins and excess fluid. ALL THE ZEST
This massage is the perfect way to kick start your detox but to keep it going at home you should continue dry body brushing. Buy a suitable body brush and using sweeping motions work towards your heart for about 5 minutes a day before a shower or bath. Use a detox bath or body oil for the perfect detox routine. Detoxing from the inside is also important, choose detox packed foods such as ginger, pomegranate and lemon or why not pop into Heidi in the Iona Shop (27 Church Road Holywood) for some expert advice?
** TIPS TO CHASE AWAY THE JANUARY COMPLEXION BLUES Perfecting cleansing- make sure you have a good, rich, creamy cleanser, apply it to the skin in a thick layer and leave it on for at least ten minutes. You have no idea how much this can help your skin (especially after a late night!). Be firm but fair - I know I always say exfoliate but I cannot stress enough how important it is but remember be gentle on your skin, try and avoid any grains. Mask it! We often over look masking but it can be the quick pick me up your skin needs. Guinots Mask Essential is packed full of essential oils that will leave your skin glowing and radiant. Now Nourish - at this time of year think about stepping up your moisturiser, try one that is richer, giving you more protection. Detox for your face - add a couple of drops of a citrus essentials oil into warm water, soak a face cloth in it and drape over your face for up to 10 minute before you cleanse or exfoliate, for fresh clear skin. 12 bloommagazine.co.uk

emotional wellbeing
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Local Cognitive Behavioural Therapist Deirdre Coyne sets out what the therapy is all about and how it can treat a range of psychological issues. Deirdre also unravels the perceived complexities and gives you a different view on how you should consider your emotional wellbeing.
C
ognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is growing in popularity as an efficient and long lasting treatment for many different types of psychological problems. If the word ‘psychological’ sends you running from the room screaming, try to consider the term referring to problems that affect your emotional rather than your physical sense of wellbeing. At some point in your life, something’s going to go a bit wrong with your body so why should we assume that our emotions and minds are any different. CBT rests on the premise that it’s not simply the events in our lives that cause us stress; it’s the way we think about them. For example, two people may be caught in traffic. While perhaps one person could view this situation as an opportunity to listen to music or get lost in their thoughts and find an opportunity to relax, another person may focus on the wasted time or the feeling of being 14 bloommagazine.co.uk
Local Expert
trapped, and become distressed. Research and practice has demonstrated the effectiveness of CBT in dealing with both clinical depression and anxietyrelated disorders such as phobias, panic attacks and also obsessive compulsive disorder. Your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, often trapping you in a negative spiral. CBT helps you stop these negative cycles. It aims to break down factors that are making you feel bad, anxious or scared so that they are more manageable. It can show you how to change these negative patterns to improve the way you feel. The reputation and popularity of CBT have grown for a variety of reasons. Whilst it is a clinically proven therapy applicable to a range of emotional problems, it also makes a process of change achievable in a short time, usually 6-12 sessions.
Scientific evidence shows that CBT is effective on its own or alongside medication. The therapist provides coaching in techniques and skills; which can then be practised independently, which reduces the need for ongoing treatment which may be lengthy and expensive. To benefit from CBT, you need to commit yourself to the process. A therapist can help and advise you, but cannot make your problems go away without your co-operation. A crucial CBT concept is that your thought processes – thoughts about yourself, other people and life situations – have a huge effect on your emotional well-being. This is summed up by the statement ‘what we think is how we feel’ or ‘what we think decides how we feel’.

sET FOR SUCCESS
Setting the Game Up to Win
M
By Justin Zalewski - Healer, Hypnotist & owner of superfoods7.com
any of us have overindulged during the festive season and have now decided to set goals and or New Years resolutions? Did you know that statistically around 95% of people will have broken their New Years Resolutions by January the 15th. By following these few simple and easy steps you can significantly improve your chances of a lasting and successful outcome and be one a the few who truly succeed. Have a clear and compelling vision and always state what you want in a positive context, for example, I want to be in great shape and have lots of energy, rather than, I want to lose weight and not feel exhausted all of the time. Have strong reasons why you must follow through for whenever things get tough. We must initiate the goal and maintain it by ourselves. If we are being coerced into doing something for someone else we will feel that internal
resistance and we ultimately fail. All goals must increase choice and have ecology. Find ways to create positive associations with the goals you want to achieve. Focus on the practice of whatever your doing and the results will naturally get better over time. Visualise yourself achieving the goal The more we see, hear and feel what it would be like to achieve this goal the more we condition our nervous system to make it a reality. Our unconscious mind literally cannot tell the difference between fantasy and reality and this is one of the most powerful tools highly successful people use to excel at whatever they do. Write down all of your goals and have a clearly defined plan for achieving them and also a way to consistently measure your results. It is also essential to have a deadline and to be clear and specific about the outcome. Be creative and flexible about achieving your goals and find ways to make it fun. Chunk it down, many people set goals that
are unrealistic and their unconscious mind gets overloaded with the chunk size and so it doesn’t even bother to try. Break your goals down into smaller chunks so that you set yourself up for success. Imagine that you goal was to walk for 1 hour each day and you do it for the first one or two days and then your legs end up being very sore. You’re going to end up associating pain to exercise and you‘re most likely not going to be motivated to want to do this again. Start gently and then build on your successes by gradually increasing the amount of time that you can comfortably walk so that you can condition yourself for success. Study successful people, whatever area of life you want to succeed in, there’s going to be someone who’s already mastered this area of life. This really is incredibly powerful, to master something in the shortest time possible where you truly can gain massive value and insight from someone else’s mistakes.

If you are thinking of separating or divorcing in January 2014 here are some commonly asked questions;

WHATS THE STORY?

came in those early days as a young boy when he would study very intensely, the lavishly coloured and detailed images of prehistoric dinosaurs, found in educational books from the library and at school. Christopher’s interest in illustrated stories advanced significantly when he discovered the world of Marvel comics and superheroes. He went onto successfully read Fine and Applied Art at the University of Ulster. Since then he has worked in a variety of settings, ranging from amateur theatre set design in Belfast, to Art Direction in short film productions. His current project is a children’s book that has been going down brilliantly with readers and critics alike.
