A New Dimension Holywood based author William Long began writing a series of sci-fi fantasy adventure stories aimed and young adults and older kids. The next edition is published soon so we caught up with William for a chat about how it all began.
W
illiam grew up in East Belfast during and after the Second World War when there was little in the way of home enter-
tainment for a little boy. Both his parents were profoundly deaf, so there was no radio at that stage of his childhood, and long before the advent of TV and computers. ‘I was always reading a book of some description: Rupert the Bear and Just William are two favourites that come to mind. American comics from an aunt in Canada arrived almost every month, feeding my imagination with the deeds of Batman, Captain Marvel and Superman, as well as the antics of Tom and Jerry. As I grew older, I would spend time with my mother helping her to read the daily and weekend papers, which helped her to adjust to a silent world.’ He left school at 14 to start work and earn some money, but continued his education with the aid of libraries and books. ‘I always had the feeling I had a story to tell, but it wasn’t until I was in my 60s when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer that I made any attempt to take writing seriously. During the eighteen months of clinical tests, scans and, finally, surgery, I kept notes on the whole process and turned it into a short story. One of the hospital staff chanced to read it and suggested that others would
if we could travel from one dimension to the next? What would we find? And so, I think, the idea for Timecrack was triggered. It was when one of my readers asked me what happened to Malcolm and Lucy, the boys’ parents, that I thought seriously about continuing the story. This eventually led to the writing of Copanatec the next book in the Timecrack series, which I expect to be published before Christmas. A third book is in the pipeline, hopefully for publication next year.’

CULTURE NIGHT 2014
Prepare to be dazzled!
Holywood Culture Night returns on Friday 19th September and this years is shaping up to be the biggest yet! As you may know, the event emerged from a series of meetings initiated by Holywood Shared Town which brought together businesses, community groups and statutory agencies to discuss ways of re-invigorating Holywood Town Centre.Culture Night was one such idea which Holywood Shared Town decided to pursue. The first night took place in 2012 and now two years on the event has captured the imaginations and generosity of local residents and businesses alike. Local singer/songwriter and business woman Mari Jackson who has performed at the event for the past two years, decided to become involved as an organiser this year in conjunction with Holywood Shared Town and the union is proving to be a key ingredient for success. Donations, favours and time have all been shared amongst the organisers and the line up of the night on 19th September is looking extraordinary! A marketing plan was hatched both in the physical and digital realms. Local businesses decided to get on board to help give something back to their community and funds quickly grew to cover the necessary event costs. To date over 90 acts have been secured to perform at the one day event on Friday 19th September 2014 including soloists, duets, bands, dance troupes, impersonators, poets, drama troupes, art exhibitions, children’s street entertainers, and many more. The event will commence early with many businesses offering a variety of activities both inside and outside (weather permitting), including discounts on products and services. The fun starts at around 3pm with buskers and various acts dotted along the pavements of the town centre and inside some of its cafes and restaurants. The High St will then

It just takes a windy, cold, overcast day to remind you that autumn is just around the corner! This time of year I do a second ‘spring’ clean. As I pack away the summer clothes, shoes, swimsuits i find it hard to believe it was ever warm enough to wear any of them!

/// Autumn Winter 2014
So as we prepare our wardrobes for cardigans, coats, layers and hats we can also get excited about makeup look for AW14! Oh yes! Grungy eyeliner. Think of a smudgy (dare i say it, slept-in look. But don’t actually sleep in it) If you’re very adventurous go for Forest Green or Blue Note by Senna which comes with a smudger on one end to make it very easy to achieve the look!
/// Beauty Problems I have been asked so many times about how you can whiten yellow nails safely and quickly? Denture cleansing tablets work a treat! Dissolve a maximum strength tablet in a bowl of water and soak your nails for five to ten minutes. I would also recommend applying two layers of basecoat instead of just one to avoid staining occurring when you’re wearing polish.

5 things you need to know
About being unfairly dismissed from your job Losing your job is upsetting, however, if you feel you have been unfairly dismissed this can add even more stress to your situation. An employer can dismiss an employee for a whole host of reasons, however, the good news is that the law is fairly clear when it comes to employment matters and there must have been a good reason for doing so. An employer also needs to ensure they have followed the company’s formal dismissal or disciplinary processes at all times. The list below llustrates some of the key considerations you need to be aware of:

Lords of the Ring SECONDS AWAY
The Return
Belfast’s Billy Murray is marking an incredible career milestone with a glittering event at the Ulster Hall this September 13th also featuring Holywood Karate Club’s Cathy McAleer! Most would say he is the man accredited with helping popularise kickboxing in Ireland and he`ll celebrate 25 years since becoming professional world champion for the first time.
M
urray, 56, was Ireland’s first ISKA Full-Contact world champion and took the world welterweight title from American Richard Hill – the Mayweather Jnr of kickboxing back then. The event took place on September 12, 1989 in the Ulster Hall. To mark the occasion Murray, now a celebrated coach and promoter, is gathering SEVEN home-grown fighting stars of the present and future who will all challenge for a world title on the night of September 13 2014. “It feels like just a heartbeat since that night my heart was racing and I 26 bloommagazine.co.uk
stepped through the ropes,” said Murray. “He’d beaten me once before, but he wasn’t going to beat me that night in front of my Belfast. I’ve had an incredible and wonderful career since then but that night set me on the way, I felt that I had to mark it and there’s no better way for me, and for the sport I love, than to look to the future.” Murray’s career has taken him from the simple gym in East Belfast, where he still turns out champion after champion, to the seat of governments in Europe. He saw the way his sport could unite communities;
his gym has long been known as a zero-tolerance zone for sectarianism. Billy visits schools, especially in tough areas teaching a message of self-respect and self-control with his motto Truth, Discipline and Respect. He helped cofound The Peace Fighters - a sports initiative dedicated to helping young people.
“
I’ve had a wonderful career since then but that night set me on the way, I felt that I had to mark it and there’s no better way for me, and for the sport I love, than to look to the future.
“
The ProKick Gym owner has also guided, promoted, and managed 10 world champions, 23 European (or Intercontinental) champions and numerous national champions. He takes teams across the globe without any official funding - it’s all paid for through fundraising by friends and families of the brave and eager young fighters.
You can purchase tickets directly from the Ulster Hall box office on 028 9033 4455, over the phone at the ProKick gym in Wilgar St on 028 9065 1074 or on-line at www.prokick.com.
