EAST BELFAST COMMUNITY CALLED ON TO SHARE THEIR MEMORIES

The Health Hub The Health Hub is a central information point for East Belfast. It is located on the ground floor of East Belfast Network Centre, beside The School Yard Café. It provides health information on a wide range of health issues covering the five themes of East Belfast’s Health Framework. Groups and organisations are welcome.

Nisha Tandon, Executive Director ArtsEkta is calling on people from East Belfast to search their memories for stories which link the area to India as part of an important new

history archiving project. The stories may be first hand recollections, or tales which have been passed down through the generations: the ambition is to capture all those Indian memories before they are lost to time. Nisha said: “The three year Sanskriti Exploring India’s Heritage project is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with the first year concentrating on migration and trade with the main focus on the historic trade links between Northern Ireland’s linen industry and South Asia. At the end of each year the oral history interviews will be submitted to the National Museums of Northern Ireland and ArtsEkta will work alongside museum and heritage organisations to create community research projects, a travelling exhibition, publications and an oral history archive.” If you feel you would like to discuss or contribute to this unique project you can contact Rachel Radcliffe on

ASK THE OPTICIAN

Protecting your eyes from UV light

LOCAL Expert Advice

Local optometrist Eric Mercer answers your questions and gives advice on common eye problems. In the first of a series of articles for Bloom magazine, Eric discusses the dangers of UV light and the importance of good sunglass protection.

Did you know that over exposure to sunlight can damage your eyes as well as your skin? The danger lies in the sun’s ultra-violet (UV) rays. While some effects on the eyes are temporary, others can be permanent and irreversible. For example, exposure to high doses of UV light over short periods can cause a very painful condition called photokeratitis. This is an inflammation of the cornea at the front of your eye - essentially, a form of ocular sunburn. Fortunately, the effects of photokeratitis are short-term, usually clearing up within 24– 48 hours.

Long term damage The long-term effects of UV light, however, are more insidious and easier to ignore. That’s because they’re painless and develop gradually over a lifetime’s exposure to the sun. On the outer eyes, possible complications include discoloured

swellings on the whites of your eyes, known as pinguecula and pterygium. Inside your eyes, UV damage can lead to more serious conditions, like cataracts and macular degeneration.

Sunglass protection The good news is that by wearing sunglasses you can easily protect your eyes against the harmful effects of UV light. However, not all sunglasses are the same, so remember to always look out for optical quality lenses that offer 100% UV protection. If you wear spectacles, you needn’t miss out on UV protection, as sunglasses can be made up to prescription. These are available in a wide range of lens types, including varifocals, bifocals and thinner, lighter high-index materials.

Transitions and polarized lenses Other options that offer full UV protection include transitions and polarized lenses.

Fast-reacting transitions lenses have the advantage of becoming darker or lighter according to the amount of available sunlight. This allows you to enjoy comfortable vision both indoors and outside. Polarized lenses offer extra clarity and protection by minimising glare reflected off horizontal surfaces, like roads and water. This makes them particularly useful for driving, as well as outdoor activities like cycling, fishing and sailing. To discuss your individual sunglass needs, see your optometrist for specialist advice on the different frame and lens options available. n my previous articles I covered topics such as: •The importance of printing your pictures •How the size of the lens affects the quality of your picture •How to use the camera & flash setting to get better pictures •Setting the aspect ratio on your camera for the shape of prints you want •How to compose better pictures If I had to pick the most important it would be “to keep it, print it!”. A high quality photograph is the only truly permanent way to keep your pictures forever. When it comes to printing your photos you’ll find our kiosks in Dundela Photo Lab are really user friendly. You can select the photos you want to print, zoom in / crop / rotate / remove red-eye / and even produce special effects and add captions or borders. Modern cameras can produce a variety of special

KEEP Your Memories Forever

Our photographic expert Andrew Foster is here again with the last in our current series of tips and advice to help you take better pictures, and make sure your memories are preserved foreverr. Dundela Photo Lab is in-house at Dundela Pharmacy, 17-19 Belmont Road. From 10p each for 6”x4” prints on 24 hour service. Fast service is also available. If you need any advice, pop in and ask Andrew! effects such as black & white, sepia and “vivid colour” photos. However my advice would be to always shoot in standard colour. The images can be manipulated afterwards to produce the effect you want, but if you take the picture using a special effect, you can’t convert it back to colour should you want to. Don’t crop your pictures using photo apps as you will lose quality – always use pc based programme such as Photoshop, or our kiosks. You may find it more convenient to select photos you want printed at home, and put them in their own folder, or on to their own storage media. This will make choosing your prints much quicker when you come to use the kiosks. (Our kiosks can only handle 2,000 images at a time, and loading up this number takes quite a while.) Your images can be printed in all standard sizes from 3.5”x5” up to 12”x18”. (We can

print any size in between, as well as large format work up to 42”x600” but these orders have to be processed manually.) Once you’ve got your prints, you can re-use your memory card, but we always recommend that you don’t delete anything until you have the prints in your hand, and you’ve made a back-up. At Dundela Photo Lab we’re still processing traditional film and printing from negatives. Whether you’ve a few disposable cameras from a party, or you’re a serious photographer who prefers the results you get from film, I’m sure you’ll be pleased with the quality of our work. There seems to be an attitude these days of “do rightly” or “good enough” – WHY? The technology to enable you to get really good results is accessible & affordable, so why would you settle for second best? And don’t forget – TO KEEP IT, PRINT IT!”

WHOLESOME By Caitríona Redmond published by Mercier Press. £16.99.

BERRY SMOOTHIE • Serves 4 100g fresh or frozen berries 2 fresh or frozen ripe (or overripe) bananas, peeled and roughly chopped 700ml orange juice 60g/porridge oats (optional) To serve up the smoothies, take out the frozen fruit an hour before serving (or the night before), then blitz, using a stick blender, with the orange juice. For extra nutrients you could also throw in a handful of raw porridge oats. This makes a fruit and slow-releasing carbohydrate ‘thickie’, which will set you up for the day ahead.

SUGAR FREE ENERGY BARS • Makes 1o bars 5 dried prunes, chopped 5 dried apricots, chopped 30g raisins 30 bloommagazine.co.uk

Feed your family well for less

In this book, well known cook and food blogger Caitríona shares her tips, tricks and recipes with the reader to help them save money and feed their family well on a budget. All the recipes have been extensively tested on her friends and family!

The book includes budgeting tips and menu plans which enable families to pick & mix from favourite meals, keep variety in their diet and make the most of the food that they cook. Here she shares with us her many inspirations for an ultra healthy breakfast. Enjoy.

baking tray. Cover with cling film and chill for 2 hours before slicing. The bars keep best in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Take a large bowl, put all the dried fruit in it. Take a mug and measure out the cocoa powder. Using a little of the hot water, make the cocoa powder into a smooth paste, then add the rest of the water. Pour the cocoa water over the dried fruit. Cover the bowl and leave to stand for at least an hour, but overnight is best. Line a baking tray with cling film. Toast the sunflower and sesame seeds in a dry pan or alternatively measure out 60g of the crunchy seed mix (see page 205). Pour the seeds into the plumped up fruit, add the honey and using a wooden spoon (or a stand mixer if you have one), beat until you have a paste. The fruit will break down a bit. Smooth the paste into the

BREAKFAST BARS • Makes 20 bars 1 cup rolled oats ½ cup sunflower seeds ½ cup hulled pumpkin seeds ½ cup raisins ½ cup dried apricots ½ cup dates, chopped ½ cup flaked almonds ½ cup melted butter 1 cup runny honey Preheat your fan oven to 190°C. Grease a baking tray and dust it with flour. Combine all the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Mix loosely with a wooden spoon. Pour in the wet ingredients (melted butter and honey) and stir until all the dry mixture is coated. Press firmly into the baking tray. Bake until golden brown and

crispy at the edges. It should take approximately 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 10 minutes before scoring the shape of the bars out on the mixture while it is still hot. This makes it easier to break when it is cold and rock solid. Wrap each bar individually in greaseproof paper and they will keep in a sealed container for up to a week in a cool, dry place.

BUTTERMILK PANCAKES WITH BLUEBERRIES AND BANANA • Serves 4 2 ripe bananas 150g plain flour ½ teaspoon baking soda pinch of salt 75ml buttermilk sunflower oil for frying blueberries lemon juice/syrup or honey

• Energy Bars

In a large bowl, mash the bananas, then add the flour, baking soda, salt and buttermilk, and beat well. The mixture will be slightly on the lumpy side from the bananas, but don’t worry, this is normal. Set the batter to one side to rest for 10 minutes. While it’s resting, preheat a large frying pan with a teaspoon of sunflower oil on a medium heat. You don’t want a high heat for pancakes. Use a tablespoon-full of the batter for each pancake. Cook a maximum of three pancakes at a time in the pan to make sure they cook evenly. You will need to top up the sunflower oil every now and again. Serve with lemon juice, syrup and some blueberries on the side.

PORRIDGE • Per Serving 40g porridge oats or about 100ml volume in a measuring jug

• Pancakes with Blueberries & Banana

To make perfect porridge you’ll need twice the volume of water as porridge oats. To speed up the cooking process you can use boiling water. Combine the water and the porridge oats in a saucepan on a medium heat, keep on stirring until the porridge bubbles, then turn the pot off, cover and remove from the heat. Ready to eat or will be fine overnight until you’re ready to eat in the morning as you’ve made it with water, not a dairy product.

COMPETITION! We are delighted to offer three readers the chance to win a copy of Caitríona’s book courtesy of Mercier Press. Simply send your contact details to info@bloommagazine.co.uk or Bloom Magazine, City East Business Centre, 68-72 Newtownards Road, Belfast, BT4 1GW. One entry per person. The number of homeowners in negative equity has clearly impacted on supply of this. However, we have noticed that the market is showing great signs of recovery with sales on the increase and general confidence within a purchaser at its highest for some time now. Girl Loves Vintage BLOG: www.girlovesvintage.tumblr.com TWITTER: @GirLovesVintage Father’s Day Finds! Dads, they get it tough on Father’s Day don’t they? Socks, ties and comedy mugs aren’t really the best way to demonstrate your love and affection, but for many Dads that’s as good as it gets! I’m not ashamed to admit it - I’m a Daddy’s girl. And if I could, I’d put

Vintage

my lovely, generous and thoughtful Dad on a flight to Liverpool

Tales & s Discoverie

at the start of next season to see our beloved football team play at Anfield with full VIP treatment. Sadly, this year, it will probably be vouchers for his favourite DIY shop. But one day! In the absence of a dream budget, you might just find an alternative to the ubiquitous tie in the charity shops of East Belfast this month. I’ve had a little

A NOVEL IDEA

hunt around and found a few less predictable Father’s Day treats.

‘Nordic Noir’ has become as much a part of our television culture in recent years as the soaps. Wallander was a precursor to The Bridge, Borgen and The Killing and this excellent book in the crime thriller series from Henning Mankell will surely delight Dads with a love of Scandi. Wallander book, £2 from War on Want, Ballyhackamore

DVD DRAMA

Continuing in the crime drama theme, this unopened Inspector Morse DVD was only £1 from Oxfam. Who doesn’t love John Thaw’s portrayal of Oxford’s best-known detective? Although, if your Dad would be more impressed with comedy or a feature film, the options are endless. Oxfam, Marie Curie and War on Want shops in Ballyhackamore all have a great selection of DVDs at fantastic prices. Inspector Morse DVD, £1 from Oxfam Ballyhackamore

TIME FOR A TIPPLE Finally, for a father who appreciates a fine tipple, these wonderful vintage whiskey tumblers from NI Hospice will go down a storm. At just £1 for the two, you could afford to package with a small bottle of his favourite drop. Vintage whiskey tumblers, 50p each from NI Hospice Ballyhackamore

Have I inspired you to think outside the Father’s Day box? I hope so, because special Dads are worth a little more thought than a multi-pack of socks. Happy shopping!
