Rory McIlroy’s foundation has donated £1 million to a children’s cancer charity in Northern Ireland. The two-time Major golf champion set up the Rory Foundation in 2013 with the aim of supporting children’s charities from around the world and to give youngsters a helping hand. The Rory Foundation has now committed £1m to the Cancer Fund for Children over a period of four years to support the running of its respite home Daisy Lodge. Holywood welcomes a brand

HOLYWOOD CELEBRATES MAYPOLE REFURBISHMENT Holywood celebrated the recent refurbishment of the Town’s historic Maypole on May Day by unveiling a commemorative cake thereby recreating a previous cake cutting event from yesteryear. Local company Kenley Kakes kindly baked a beautiful cake complete with a Maypole which was then unveiled by the Mayor of North Down Councillor Andrew Muir alongside the May Queen and all the Maypole Dancers in the Maypole Bar which was first licensed in 1857 and has only ever had three proprietors. Commenting after the event, Mayor Muir stated “With early maps showing a Maypole standing on it’s current site since the 1620’s I was delighted to take part in this event to celebrate recent refurbishment work with the iconic weather-vane re-appearing on top of the Maypole, as requested by Alderman Ellie McKay.” Stroke survivors in Belfast and North Down who attend their local Stroke Association support groups will be able to make the often

new Asian cuisine restaurant, cafe and take away to the town; At 28 is open now and will be open 7 days a week. READY

Steady Go!

RUNNING UP THAT HILL The world’s oldest active Hillclimb returns to the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum for the 2014 Cultra Hill Climb. The event takes place on Saturday 14 June from 10am-5pm. We have some history on the event and what you can expect from this years fantastic plans.

T

he Cultra Hillclimb was first held on 6th May 1905 by members of the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club at the scenic estate of Sir Robert Kennedy, overlooking Belfast Lough. The event became a regular feature of the RNIYC calendar and ran until 1929, except during the Great War. In 1930 the event relocated a short distance and was renamed Croft Hillclimb, continuing today as the opening round of the annual NI Hillclimb Championship. Since 1989 Croft has been run by the Thoroughbred Sports Car Club of Northern Ireland - TSCC(NI). In 2000, with support from North Down Borough Council, TSCC(NI) returned to the original site to establish Cultra as the Oldest Active Speed Hillclimb in the World. Now home to the award-winning Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Cultra estate includes

a road course based on the nearby original, with return link to Paddock and Start allowing near-continuous running. Support from the Museum brought Themed Events from 2010. The twisting hillclimb course is 640m long, climbing almost 60m past the Edwardian Cultra Manor, with no straight longer than 45m. Ten Classes cater for eligible cars of all ages and types, typically spanning ten decades. Competitors are given two Practice Runs and three Official Timed Runs. The scene has been set this year to celebrate all ‘Minis, Mods and Monsters’ during the day long event in association with the Thoroughbred Sports Car Club NI (TSCCNI) on Saturday 14 June. The theme is in celebration of Paddy Hopkirk’s win on the

Monte Carlo rally 50 years ago as NI commemorates an important year for the Mini. The coolness of Vespa-riding mods, and modified cars will also be recognised at the event, alongside a number of monster cars. This year the museum is delighted to welcome for the first time, the popular ‘Frock Around the Clock’ Vintage Fair Extraordinaire; an outlet for sellers of vintage fashion, home wares and other treasures. A vintage hair and beauty team will ensure the event’s glam our. Visitors can also enjoy the sights and sounds of the Hillclimb from the lawn with food from the BBQ or an ice cream from the vintage tricycle. Crosslé Car Company of Holywood will have a display in Cultra Manor. Not only is the event an incredibly competitive day for all the drivers, but there will be endless entertainment for everyone.

Creating Adventures The Boards

Replay Theatre Company began life way back in 1988. We had a chat with operations Manager Fiona Bell to get an inight into their amazing projects.

“S

o what do we do? Well, simply put – we make plays for children because only good things happen when kids get involved in theatre! It opens their minds, fires their imaginations, let’s them see things from a different angle. Even if the only result is that when they are adults they aren’t scared of ‘going to the theatre’ that is a good thing. All of the stuff we make costs less than taking them to the cinema. And it stays with them for much longer than the latest blockbuster (Maybe not Frozen. Even Replay can’t compete with that!)’ For lots of children Repaly Theatre Company are their first taste of professional theatre. They are the only company in Northern Ireland who work with all ages of children – from babies as young as 4 weeks old to teenagers who are about to leave school. A few years ago, they also made a commitment to find the funds @ReplayTheatreCo

20 bloommagazine.co.uk

to allow them to work with PMLD children in special schools, as there was nothing being made just for them. ‘When the company first started up,’ says Fiona, ‘most of what we did happened in schools. We didn’t want to leave the magic of theatre to the few who could afford to go to the big venues like the Lyric or The Grand Opera House. So we made sure that the play which was performed in the primary school hall was exactly the same as the one that went to theatres – same set, same lighting, same actors. In fact when the new Lyric reopened we were the first children’s company to perform on the main stage.’

But with all the budget pressures facing our schools at the moment, they also wanted to get to the children whose schools couldn’t book them. So now, you will always be able to catch their latest show at your local venue all across Northern Ireland. ‘In fact, you might even catch us outside of Northern Ireland. In the coming months, we will have toured across all of Ireland, the UK, and wait for it…… New York. In March 2015, we are

f

VERY excited to take our baby show, Babble to Broadway!’ But for Replay, it is not just about selling tickets to plays. All of the stuff they make gets tested on the actual audience. ‘We like to call them our creative consultants. We are always looking for local schools or families to help us make sure the work is bang on for the age group. So we would love to hear from you – like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter – we are after all ‘down with the kids’.’

WHOLESOME By Caitríona Redmond published by Mercier Press. £16.99.

BERRY SMOOTHIE • Serves 4 100g fresh or frozen berries 2 fresh or frozen ripe (or overripe) bananas, peeled and roughly chopped 700ml orange juice 60g/porridge oats (optional) To serve up the smoothies, take out the frozen fruit an hour before serving (or the night before), then blitz, using a stick blender, with the orange juice. For extra nutrients you could also throw in a handful of raw porridge oats. This makes a fruit and slow-releasing carbohydrate ‘thickie’, which will set you up for the day ahead.

SUGAR FREE ENERGY BARS • Makes 1o bars 5 dried prunes, chopped 5 dried apricots, chopped 30g raisins 24 bloommagazine.co.uk

Feed your family well for less

In this book, well known cook and food blogger Caitríona shares her tips, tricks and recipes with the reader to help them save money and feed their family well on a budget. All the recipes have been extensively tested on her friends and family!

The book includes budgeting tips and menu plans which enable families to pick & mix from favourite meals, keep variety in their diet and make the most of the food that they cook. Here she shares with us her many inspirations for an ultra healthy breakfast. Enjoy.

baking tray. Cover with cling film and chill for 2 hours before slicing. The bars keep best in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Take a large bowl, put all the dried fruit in it. Take a mug and measure out the cocoa powder. Using a little of the hot water, make the cocoa powder into a smooth paste, then add the rest of the water. Pour the cocoa water over the dried fruit. Cover the bowl and leave to stand for at least an hour, but overnight is best. Line a baking tray with cling film. Toast the sunflower and sesame seeds in a dry pan or alternatively measure out 60g of the crunchy seed mix (see page 205). Pour the seeds into the plumped up fruit, add the honey and using a wooden spoon (or a stand mixer if you have one), beat until you have a paste. The fruit will break down a bit. Smooth the paste into the

BREAKFAST BARS • Makes 20 bars 1 cup rolled oats ½ cup sunflower seeds ½ cup hulled pumpkin seeds ½ cup raisins ½ cup dried apricots ½ cup dates, chopped ½ cup flaked almonds ½ cup melted butter 1 cup runny honey Preheat your fan oven to 190°C. Grease a baking tray and dust it with flour. Combine all the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Mix loosely with a wooden spoon. Pour in the wet ingredients (melted butter and honey) and stir until all the dry mixture is coated. Press firmly into the baking tray. Bake until golden brown and

crispy at the edges. It should take approximately 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 10 minutes before scoring the shape of the bars out on the mixture while it is still hot. This makes it easier to break when it is cold and rock solid. Wrap each bar individually in greaseproof paper and they will keep in a sealed container for up to a week in a cool, dry place.

BUTTERMILK PANCAKES WITH BLUEBERRIES AND BANANA • Serves 4 2 ripe bananas 150g plain flour ½ teaspoon baking soda pinch of salt 75ml buttermilk sunflower oil for frying blueberries lemon juice/syrup or honey

• Energy Bars

In a large bowl, mash the bananas, then add the flour, baking soda, salt and buttermilk, and beat well. The mixture will be slightly on the lumpy side from the bananas, but don’t worry, this is normal. Set the batter to one side to rest for 10 minutes. While it’s resting, preheat a large frying pan with a teaspoon of sunflower oil on a medium heat. You don’t want a high heat for pancakes. Use a tablespoon-full of the batter for each pancake. Cook a maximum of three pancakes at a time in the pan to make sure they cook evenly. You will need to top up the sunflower oil every now and again. Serve with lemon juice, syrup and some blueberries on the side.

PORRIDGE • Per Serving 40g porridge oats or about 100ml volume in a measuring jug

• Pancakes with Blueberries & Banana

To make perfect porridge you’ll need twice the volume of water as porridge oats. To speed up the cooking process you can use boiling water. Combine the water and the porridge oats in a saucepan on a medium heat, keep on stirring until the porridge bubbles, then turn the pot off, cover and remove from the heat. Ready to eat or will be fine overnight until you’re ready to eat in the morning as you’ve made it with water, not a dairy product.

ARTISTIC THERAPY

Holywood artist Dawn Crothers has recently donated over £7,500 worth of her paintings and prints to a new Cancer retreat / refuge for children.

D

awn discovered the fantastic Daisy Lodge complex whilst reading an article online and decided she would like to help out. Dawn met with Gillian Creevy CEO for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children in December and went about painting her famous Snail and animal paintings for the amazing project. One very large canvas measuring 6ft x 5ft hangs in the entrance foyer and she also worked on a very special piece for the beautiful new canteen area which has magnificent views over the Mournes. “Gillian the Daisy Lodge Hen” was named after the projects CEO and has been greatly admired by all the staff and VIP visitors

at the opening launch of the centre earlier this year! The centre boasts over 12 state of the art family rooms where you will also find Dawns work adorning the walls. Dawn has been so touched by the project and commented “Daisy Lodge is now a very special place for me and I find it so peaceful every time I return for a visit. My paintings bring the building to life and with children being the main inhabitants I thought they would enjoy my artwork for many years to come!” Gillian Creevy CEO for the Cancer Fund for Children “Dawn’s fabulous donation of unique art to Daisy Lodge has add the finishing touches to our short breakcentre for children with cancer and their families. The paintings add vibrancy, colour and warmth . Today as you walk with a family through the doors of Daisy Lodge you get the sense that

the nurturing has begun, so too the feeling of strength and sense that perhaps this is a family, that will, with our help, feel able to start back on a journey of recovery.” Dawn’s will be exhibiting at The Liverpool Contemporary Art Fair in Liverpool in July and has an array of her original Oils and prints on display at Whalley Fine Art in Holywood!

TIPS FOR SELLING YOUR HOME THIS LOCAL Expert SUMMER Advice John Minnis, Director, John Minnis Estate Agents, specialising in both the residential sales and lettings throughout Belfast, North Down, Bangor and Ards Peninsula, shares with us his top tips for presenting your home for sale. 1. Kerb Appeal How does your home look from the road? Is the driveway untidy? The grass unkempt? You need any potential buyers to be impressed from the road to stop the car and get out and take a closer look. 2. Clean & Sparkling A possible buyer wants to imagine themselves living in your house, this won’t be as desirable if it isn’t looking its best. Clean the bathrooms and floors until they shine, hoover all carpets and fabrics and clean all surfaces. The strategic display of flowers is a real winner. 3. Create an Ambience Warmth – put the heating on an hour before viewings. If you have a fire – light it. Soft lighting – if the viewing is in early evening or a dark day – make the effort to ensure each room is correctly lit – side lamps create a nicer ambience than overhead lighting. Smell - Strong smells have a negative effect on people; avoid cooking before viewings. Air the house thoroughly and invest in a few scented candles.

4. Make Minor Repairs. Spend your energy on repairing signs of obvious wear and tear. Replace cracked floor or counter tiles. Fill holes in walls. Fix doors that don’t close properly and kitchen drawers that jam. If you’ve considered replacing a worn bedspread, do so now. 5. Neutralise Neutral colours sell. Try to convey an image of quality and neutrality. Potential buyers want to imagine themselves as the owners. If you use styles or colours they would never select, you’ve just turned them off. 6. De-Clutter! If you haven’t used it in over a year, you probably don’t need it. You want your home calm, idyllic and spacious – not loud, overcrowded and cluttered. 7. De-personalize. Buying a home is an emotional decision, and you want potential buyers to make an emotional connection with your home by being able to “see” themselves in it. Box items that are personal to you, it will pay off in the long-run.

8. Period Features and Props Use props such as candles, plants and soft furnishings to help buyers visualise themselves living there, also place greater emphasis on any unusual or period features – this could be dressing an unused Victorian fireplace in church candles and dusting off the cornicing. 9. Scrutinise Ask a friend to be honest and open about how they feel your home looks as a potential buyer. Don’t be offended – remember this is constructive criticism. 10. Disassociate Yourself with Your Home. Make the mental decision to “let go” of your emotions and focus on the fact that soon this house will no longer be yours. Try and picture yourself handing over the keys and envelopes containing appliance warranties to the new owners. This will make the whole selling process easier on you and your family.
