summer goodbye and welcome in the autumnal nature of autumn, we have a packed issue this month that has everything you need for a good read with the feet up. The East Belfast Festival last month had a palpable effect on the community and it’s wonderful to see so many people getting involved in such events. It’s that kind of spirit that shows the East off to its best and the kind of spirit we should harness week in week out. The ultimate aim when we started Bloom was to provide a platform for local business, trades, artists, charities, craftspeople, sports... the list goes on. We have had some incredible feedback of success to that effect and we want to continue to provide this unique outlet for people to spread the word on what they can offer. Very often, like the festival, there is something very special just round the corner from you, hopefully we can tell you what it is. With that in mind we have the beginning of a regular area focus feature starting off with Bloomfield Avenue. Emma Dunn firstly gives us an insight into the history of Bloomfield then we profile a vast array of businesses and traders on the Avenue that you can visit. Also this month we of course have the breaking news. Our beauty gurus at The Secret Day Spa look at the perils of using the wrong facial products. Our Rising Star is the East Belfast man who is causing a stir on the big screen, George Clarke of Yellow Fever Productions. For the culinary inclined, our cookbook is by Rozanne Stevens and for new additions to the diary, check out our What’s On guide. The Local Legend is Alan Hill from Braeside Nursery who has his roots in the business for almost 50 years in a beautiful location minutes from the East. So there’s a taster, enjoy the issue and if you see something you like or need, get it locally,; help the community grow.

It has been announced that a new museum dedicated to the history of policing in Ireland is to be built in East Belfast. The site is in the grounds of police headquarters at Knock and will be alongside the memorial to RUC officers. The current museum on the same site currently restricts the number of items collected over the last 200 years. The new £5.5m project is expected to take two years to complete and will be open to the public with free admission. On display will be a range of artefacts including uniforms, medals, weapons and other items with some dating back to the early 19th century. Visitors will also be able to hear a vast oral history archive the RUC George Cross Foundation has built up by interviewing former police officers about their experiences. The RUC George Cross Foundation will manage the museum. Its members, patrons and guides will all work for free. The foundation plan to ask the group’s patron, the Prince of Wales, to open the building when the project is completed.

The launch takes place at 10.30am in Hillmount Nursery Centre, Gilnahirk. Third Graham Cup Rugby Festival On 12th September Grosvenor Grammar School welcomed Aaron McKinney from AM Property Management Limited, sponsors of its recently staged ‘Graham Cup’ Rugby Festival. The event saw Grosvenor welcome teams from four other schools, Banbridge Academy, Belfast Royal Academy, Rainey Endowed and Wesley College. The hosts performed encouragingly on the day, securing victory over Banbridge Academy by 7 points to 3, a 0-0 draw with Rainey Endowed and suffering narrow losses to both B.R.A. (10-7) and Wesley College (7-0), but it was the latter side, visiting from Dublin, who ran out eventual winners. The event, named after Grosvenor’s former Head of Sports Studies Mr Ian Graham, was being staged within Grosvenor for the third consecutive year. The school wish to thank AMPM, whose sponsorship helped to make the event possible and provided the necessary finance for trophies and hospitality to be provided on the day. We look forward to reading about further successful Graham Cups within Grosvenor over the years to come.

Titanic Belfast has welcomed its 500,000th visitor, just six months after opening on March 31, 2012. The visitor attraction has exceeded the original annual forecast for visitor numbers, which was set at 425,000.

The Asda Active Family Fun Day took place recently at Orangefield Park. It was the final bank holiday weekend and despite the unsurprisingly mixed weather the Belfast event went down a storm with the families that turned up to try all sort of sports. The event organisers had some of the Asda Active sports in a large marquee so when the rain did fall the fun continued. Amongst all the fun and sports of the day there were cheque presentations to three local sports group nominated by Asda Dundonald. Congratulations North Down Trampolining Club who won the vote and received a £300 donation to their club, also congratulations to Castlereagh Armature Boxing Club who came second and Dundonald Ice Skating Club who came third. Using the Wrong Facial Products Are you aware of the disadvantages that you can actually get when you use the wrong products for your skin? Using the wrong products for your skin type can aggravate your skin and will not help clear up any skin conditions you might have. When our skin is looking less than its best, our first reaction is to start layering on the problemsolving products in an effort to stop that zit, wrinkle, or brown spot in its tracks. But, we might actually be making our skin problems worse by piling on the products.

X

Signs you may be using the wrong product

• Products are not clearing the acne • You still have a shiny T-Zone • The skin feels tight • The skin feels itchy • The skin feels dehydrated

We love layering in so many aspects of our lives (shirts, nail polish, the list goes on...) so then we assume that slathering on every moisturizer in our cabinet would make our skin ridiculously radiant. Turns out that when you mix certain ingredients together, they can cancel each other out, or worse, they can actually cause a reaction in your skin that manifests as a rash or a breakout.

The Origins of Bloomfield East Belfast Historical Society

From a single rural home to a densely populated bustling residential and retail suburb, Emma Dunn outlines the wonderful history of the area.

Bloomfield Avenue 1917

B

loomfield Avenue is a continuation of Bloomfield Road which was named after a house called Bloomfield and we can assume that the road led to this house. Bloomfield House consisted of roughly two hundred and fifty acres of land and a number of farm buildings as this area would have been fairly rural at that time and the house was located roughly where Bloomfield Park is now situated. The house was in existence for quite a number of years and during the First World War its buildings were used by the UVF. It should also be remembered that prior to 1895 this area was outside the Belfast city boundary until around 1905 when the lower reaches of Bloomfield/ Ravenscroft Avenue became accessible by tram. Improved transport in the area resulted in wide scale development and a lot of the smaller terraced houses in the area were built around this time. The largest employer for the area would have been the Belfast Rope & Twine Company (The Ropeworks) which at its peak employed 4000 workers mainly women from Bloomfield and the surrounding district, although other employers would have been The Owen O Cork flax mill and a factory called Ross Brothers who were mostly engaged in the linen and damask trade. Although not as large an employer as The Ropeworks, Ross Brothers also built a school, Bloomfield School, for their employees and this school didn’t close until 1973. One of the best known businesses from the area began as a small grocery shop at 334 Greenville Terrace on the Beersbridge Road and it was owned by a man called J.L Stewart. This small grocery business soon became known as Stewarts Cash Stores and eventually developed into Stewarts Supermarket. It was

because of this that during the 1920s and 30s the Beersbridge Road at its intersection with the Bloomfield Road was really the shopping centre of the district until the opening of Connswater shopping centre moved some of this to Bloomfield Avenue. It may be hard to believe now but the first international football match between Ireland and England was played at Bloomfield on the grounds of Knock Football Club which was adjacent to Bloomfield Station and believed to be roughly on the site of Martinez Avenue. It is a game perhaps best resigned to history as I understand that the result was unfortunately a humiliating 13 – 0 defeat to England! Many people in the more affluent housing would have settled in the area due to its close proximity to the train station which was located close to the present day Martinez Avenue, and transport into Belfast from here via the County Down railway line would have been extremely quick, frequent and it was extensively used by the residents of the area until its closure in 1949.’ ©Emma Dunn. The East Belfast Historical Society meets in Belmont Tower on the second Thursday of each month. For further details please email secretary@ebhs.org.uk

Del ish

Rozanne Stevens: Bringing the Ish Factor to World Cuisine South African born cookery tutor and broadcaster, Rozanne Stevens visited Belfast recently to talk about her wonderfully entitled cook book, Del ish. The chef and author has put together 101 recipes featuring her trademark ‘ish’ factor. ‘I like to take food and put my own twist on it - a skill I have honed after many years of travelling the world and immersing myself in the cuisines and cultures of the region. So my book is full of dishes that are Chinese ‘ ish’ or Thai ‘ish’ – hence the name of my book - Delish.’ The ten chapters of recipes covers Chinese-ish, Thai-ish, Spanish, Irish, Marrakeshish, South Africanish, Frenchish, Mexicanish, Greekish, and Italianish food ensuring there is something to suit every palate. You can catch Rozanne at Belfast Cookery School from October where she will be holding her ‘ish’ classes. Norman’s Lamb Shank Norman’s Lamb Shank

Fennel Tomato Mussel Pot “ Mussels

are still one of the few delicacies that are reasonably priced. They make a great sharing meal for two or with a group of friends. I have many happy memories of enjoying this French classic with a glass of champagne and good company. Cleaning mussels just requires pulling off the beard, rinsing well and taking off shattered barnacles that can end up in your sauce. While you are cleaning the mussels, if any of them remain open, throw them out. This means that the mollusc is dead and could make you sick. A live mollusc will close when you tap it, as it thinks you are a predator. Conversely, once you have cooked the mussels, any that remain closed should be discarded. So you have two checkpoints to ensure freshness and food safety ” 4 sticks of celery, roughly chopped 1 large onion, roughly chopped 2 bay leaves 12 peppercorns 1 bottle of good red wine Chunky tomato stew: If there is lamb shank on the menu, 1 T olive oil 1 red onion, finely diced my dad is guaranteed to order it, 2 sticks celery, large dice one of his favourites. And if there 2 medium carrots, large dice is one thing Norman knows how to cook, it’s lamb. My dad taught me to 2 cloves garlic, crushed make little incisions in the meat and 2 tins chopped tomatoes 2 T tomato paste insert slivers of garlic and fresh 2 T balsamic vinegar rosemary to infuse flavour. Cooked 1 t sugar low and slow, lamb shank should Method: 1 tin butter beans, rinsed and In a large saucepan, melt the butter fall off the bone and melt in your drained mouth. Served here with a chunky and olive oil. Salt and pepper Add the onion and garlic and cook tomato stew for an easy side. Citrusy minty topping: The citrusy herby topping is like a until slightly softened gremolata used in Italian cuisine that Zest of 1 orange & 1 lemon Add the fennel, white wine, lemon adds freshness and flavour. So both 2 T parsley, chopped juice and mussels. 2 T mint, chopped cover and simmer until the mussels Greekish, Italianish and Normanish! 2 cloves garlic, sliced begin to open. Give the pot a good 4 lamb shanks shake. Method: 2 T pure olive oil Add the tomato, salt and pepper 5 cloves of garlic, peeled and sliced Prepare the lamb shanks by to taste. making 6 tiny incisions into each 4 sprigs of fresh rosemary Garnish with the fresh herbs and 4 medium carrots, roughly chopped one with a sharp knife to create serve from pan with crusty bread. 100g butter 2tbls olive oil 4 saffron strands 1 red onion, sliced in thin half moons 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 2 fennel bulbs, thinly sliced 500ml good white wine Juice of 1 lemon Extra lemon wedges to serve 1kg mussels, cleaned and debearded 3 ripe tomatoes, diced Fresh coriander and parsley

tiny cavities. Push a slice of garlic and a few rosemary leaves into these incisions. Season the lamb shanks very well with sea salt and black pepper. Preheat the oven to 150°C. In a large enamelled cast-iron casserole dish, heat the olive oil. Brown the lamb shanks on all 3 sides over a high heat, about 4 minutes per side. Add the carrots, celery and onion to the casserole. Pour in the red wine and boil for 3 minutes. Add the bay leaves and peppercorns. Cover the casserole tightly and transfer to the oven. Braise the lamb shanks, turning once, for 3 hours until tender. To make the chunky tomato stew, heat the olive oil in a pot. Add in the onion, celery and carrot. Place a circle of parchment paper on top of the veggies to trap the steam. Cook on a low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes before adding the tomato, tomato paste, balsamic vinegar and sugar. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 30 minutes. Add in the butter beans for the last 10 minutes of cooking. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Mix the citrusy herb topping together and set aside. Make a ‘bed’ of chunky tomato stew on each dinner plate. Arrange the lamb shanks on top. Drizzle over a little of the cooking liquid, but discard the cooking veggies, they have done their job. Garnish each lamb shank with the citrusy minty topping.

These get made separately and then poured into the dish. They curdle and look strange, but during baking they separate and you get chocolate sponge on the top and a rich dark chocolate sauce underneath. Serve warm with cream or ice cream and fresh or frozen berries. Some of the solid ingredients are measured by volume in millilitres, so use your measuring spoons for small amounts and your measuring jug for larger quantitites. ” Sponge batter: 60g butter 190ml sugar 1tsp vanilla essence 1 egg 190ml milk 250ml flour 1tbsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 2 tbsp cocoa powder Sauce: 375ml water 375ml brown sugar 3 tablespoons cocoa powder Vanilla ice cream and raspberries to serve

Method: Cream the butter and sugar together till light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract. Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder and cocoa powder. Gradually beat into the creamed butter and sugar, alternating with the milk until all mixed in. Pour the batter into a greased oven dish. Combine all the sauce ingredients in a pot, stir over a low heat until dissolved then bring to the boil. Gently pour the hot sauce over the batter. It will separate and curdle, but this is as it should be. Bake at 200°C for 30 minutes until you have the sponge on top and the sauce underneath. Do not overbake as the sauce will dry up. Serve with vanilla ice cream and raspberries.

The Perfect Shave

Peter Oliver, Northern Irelands leading barber offers his advice on how to achieve the perfect shave.

‘P

roper shaving has become a lost art. Today’s average male has no clue about the fine art of the traditional wet shave that their grandfathers and some of their fathers used to take part in. Instead, they’re only accustomed to the cheap and disposable shaving products that companies market. I’m not sure when or why it happened, but the tradition of passing down the secrets of a clean shave abruptly stopped. Thankfully, this glorious male ritual is making a comeback. Pre-shave cleansing: Some skin care experts recommend cleansing your face with a facial soap before shaving to help remove dead skin and excess dirt and oil, thus freeing up any ingrown hairs and preventing the clogging of your razor. If you do cleanse your face before shaving, don’t wash with ordinary soap, as it will dry your skin. Use warm water and a facial soap or cleansing scrub designed for men’s skin. It is best to shave after a hot shower, when the bristles have been well softened. Lather up: If you’ve never used a brush during shaving, you’re in for a treat. Take a small dollop of your shave cream and place it in a mug. Take your brush that you’ve pre-soaked with water and swirl the cream around until you get a nice thick lather. Apply the lather with your brush in swirling motions. When your face is nice and covered. The shave: You don’t need to use pressure because the weight of the safety razor is sufficient to cut your beard. If you press down, you’ll end up hacking up your face. To help counter the tendency to apply pressure, try holding the razor by the tip of the handle. Shave in the direction of the growth to prevent razor rash and in-grown hairs. If you’ve been shaving against the growth up until this point, then it might take some time to get a close shave by going with the growth. Keep trying; your face may take a week or two to adjust to a new method of shaving. Post shave: Rinse your face with cool water. When you are finished shaving rinse off excess cream with cold water. Gently pat your face dry. Do not rub. Apply toner or aftershave balm. Avoid using alcohol-based aftershave, as it will dry out your skin. Instead, apply a balm or toner with ingredients that will moisturise and nourish your skin. After-shave toners help remove any residue left over from shaving, close the pores, and refresh the skin.’

Rising Star

A Golden Era George Clarke’s film company has been at fever pitch for 5 years. He tells us the story.

‘I

had absolutely no background in film at all,’ says East Belfast man George Clarke, the brainchild of film production company Yellow Fever Productions. ‘When I left high school in 1994, I couldn’t afford to go to London or New York to learn about the industry, so just held out knowing that one day I would get somewhere with it.’ He spent 15 years working in low paid jobs and temp positions just until the right moment came, then when he turned 30, he decided enough was enough. ‘I quit my job, and took the biggest risk of my life.’ So Yellow Fever Productions began life in October 2007 when George started production on his first feature film ‘Battle Of The Bone’. ‘The team was brought together by a host of new faces and everyone was a first timer to the industry. BOTB became a very ambitious learning curve for us all and an introduction to the world of what YFP was all about.’ This month YFP turns five years old, and in that time they have independently managed to produce and make over 100 projects including five feature films, some of which have gone on to win awards in the US and run the big screen here in Belfast. ‘We also run our own DVD and distribution label,’ says George, ‘which has seen our own films and US indie’s hit the shop shelves across the UK and Ireland, and the annual Yellow Fever Independent Film Festival which had its 4th run this year with special guests Mike Leeder (Rush Hour 3, Mummy 3, Resident Evil 5) and prolific director Albert Pyun (Captain America, Cyborg, Road To Hell). So it’s been a hell of a ride so far!’ So what has been the highlight so far? ‘Every year something amazing happens. Winning an award, completing a film, hearing the applause at the end of a première, and getting recognised worldwide is just a few... I love every minute of it really. Another part of the job is going to schools and colleges from here to New York to do talks on no-budget film making and what we do. For five years now, YFP has been my full time job.’ A jam packed schedule for the company, what’s next? ‘Well my latest feature ‘Splash Area’ just premiered at the YFIFF and is next off to the Freak Show Film Festival in Orlando. After that we begin work on ‘Billy’ a true life drama about a sick kid from Castlederg and the political scandal that surrounds his case, along with our big action flick ‘The First Mission’ of which we have the joy of getting one of my hero’s (Jackie Chan) top stunt guys in to help with the fight and action choreography. Its going to be a busy year.’ With all that in mind its understandable why its difficult to pinpoint a highlight given that there are so many, but its clear George and his team love what they do. ‘Having the freedom to create and do something different almost every day is the thing I love most about this line of work. It is all driven by pure passion and dreams, and no matter how hard the struggle, the end result is always worth while.’ YFP films on sale at major DVD stores in town, or at www.yellowfeverproductions.com for a signed copy or three...

Local Legend

Decades of Growth Alan Hill has been expanding his beautiful nursery business in the hills for the past 48 years. With the 50th anniversary just round the corner, we speak to this fascinating and hugely knowledgeable man on how it all started and what this local nursery can offer you.

B

raeside Nursery Centre began in 1964 when it was set up by Alan. L. Hill. His father had always been a farmer and it wasn’t long until Alan continued in the tradition of working with the countryside at an early age. The nursery was an off shoot from the family farm and Alan slowly built it up, as he explains, ‘When I left school in 1962, I started this to sell to the public in 1964 growing plants. Then it was very small, I started with 16x10 foot glass house, then 50x20 2-3 years later and then 100x20. It was mainly lettuce, tomatoes, chrysanthemum then moved into bedding plants, shrubs, trees in the early 70s and I have been doing that type of thing ever since. So how different was it then to the market these days? ‘I was selling to the garden shops and centres in the early days. There were a lot of shops in Belfast city centre then selling plants, at least four or five of them. I also did May’s Market which is where the Waterfront Hall is now, Lisburn on a Tuesday and Bangor on a Wednesday. I did that for around five years and it was hard to be in two places at once so I then decided to be based here more with people coming up to the nursery. I actually have a few of the original customers still coming in now.’ The nursery has increased in size from a small business to its present day status as one of the largest nurseries in Northern Ireland with probably the widest range of plant material available all the year around. Alan also works with many of the country’s leading landscapers, ‘There’s a lot of landscapers get a lot of plants off me these days for their projects and I actually still deliver to a fellow in Belleek.’ But the general public also travel the very short distance out of Belfast to visit this incredibly beautiful, serene and wonderfully arranged place, a joy for beginners and professionals alike. ‘The business became very different when the big chains came but we have a huge choice here and people like a more personal service and the knowledge and information of what to plant and what to use where. We have everything you could need and I’ve plenty of pansies, violas, wallflowers, autumn flowers, polyanthus, bulbs for the spring like daffodil and crocus. Shrubs we have all year too.’ Braeside also offer stoneware and ornamental pots to enhance any garden patio or home and there is a wide range of garden sundries including fertilisers, composts and natural stone plus it’s a locally owned nursery not that far away. ‘It’s a very short distance out of Belfast, most people know where Roselawn Cemetery is, so it’s not far past that, first on the left.’ 25 School Road, Crossnacreevy.
