been a bit of a wick summer for the old tans, but the schools are back this month and everyone knows that as soon as you go back to school the sun splits the trees. Or at least that’s how it used to be in the olden days anyway. But whatever the weather warriors have in store for us, we really don’t care because East Belfast is so hot right now! Coming up is the inaugural East Belfast Arts Festival. Yes, as you can see from our front cover, headlining the event is East Belfast’s very own Van Morrison. A huge congratulations to the organisers for securing such a legendary act, but even the big ma n himself would have to admit that he is just a small part of the huge bill in what is a magnificent effort from everyone involved in the organisation of the event. It runs from 5th-9th September. Find out more in this issue and see you there. We have a great line up ourselves. Kicking off with all the local news on your doorstep, we then welcome new contributor, Emma Dunn who is Honorary Secretary of the East Belfast Historical Society. East Belfast Arts Festival Pictured at the launch is Chair of the East Belfast Arts Festival Maurice Kinkead, Lord Mayor of Belfast Alderman Gavin Robinson, Commercial and Marketing Director at Belfast City Airport Katy Best and Chair of Féile an Phobail Danny Morrison.
The extensive programme of the inaugural East Belfast Arts Festival, in partnership with George Best Belfast City Airport, 5-9 September will culminate in a massive outdoor concert featuring Van Morrison. Over 40 events and exhibitions make up a kaleidoscope of visual arts, music, film, theatre, literature, comedy and magic that will take place in a variety of venues across east Belfast, including libraries, bars, cafes, social clubs, art galleries, shopping centres, hotels and the City Airport. The culmination of the Festival will be the Big Top Festival in Aircraft Park(Holywood Road) on Saturday 8th September, which will see Van Morrison returning home to perform in east Belfast for the first time in many years. Before Van takes to the stage a variety of musical talent will be showcased by local acts including Brian Houston, Gareth Dunlop, Belfast Community Gospel Choir, Anthony Toner and Van’s daughter, Shana Morrison. Speaking at the launch in the Engine Room Art Gallery on the Newtownards Road, Lord Mayor Alderman Gavin Robinson, said, “Looking at the programme for the East Belfast Arts Festival, it is clear that we have a creative and eclectic selection of events for the first year of this festival. I am delighted to be here to mark this occasion and wish the organisers and participants every success.’ Theatre & Literature Highlights: C.S Lewis and literary themed tours are programmed as are creative writing workshops and a show with local man Dan Gordon. Local theatre company productions include the Brassneck Theatre Company presenting ‘Basra Boy’. Visual Art Highlights: Wannabe photographers can exhibit as part of the Shorts Camera Club Exhibition. London illustrator Hicks 54 is the Festival’s Artist in Residence and will be working with a local community group to deliver Street Art in the area. Ruth Gonsalves Moore, Duncan Wallace and James Millar are amongst the other artists showcasing at the Festival. Film Highlights: The Yellow Fever Film Festival hosts horror, zombie, action, comedy, drama, romance and documentary movies. If zombies are your thing, you can even participate in the charity zombie walk and fun day at Stormont Estate! Comedy Highlights: Belmont Tower will be the location for comedy and Shane Toddd and guests offer some light entertainment on Thursday 6th and children will be amazed and dazzled by deception at the Mini Magic Club on Saturday 8th September. Take it away (Northern Ireland) works by letting you spread the cost of your new musical instrument over 10 months, making it more affordable to get playing. You’ll need to pay a deposit and then pay the rest back in 9 monthly instalments – completely interest free. Take it away (Northern Ireland) is available at registered member retailers only, and is open exclusively to residents of Northern Ireland. For more details visit www.artscouncil-ni.org/takeitaway The Inside Out bus, developed by Dundonald Elim Church, is equipped with a high-tech music studio in an effort to steer young people away from becoming involved in crime in east Belfast. Funded by money seized from criminals, the bus has brand-new computers and mixing equipment. The Department of Justice provided £90,000 towards the project by using money recovered from criminal assets. The double decker bus is fitted out as a mobile music and IT studio that will go into various areas within the Castlereagh Borough to work with young people. It is equipped with iMacs, Guitars, Music Keyboards, DJ Mixing Deck, Cameras and video equipment as well as PS3 and Xbox games concoles. www. dundonaldelim.org
WALK THE LOUGH!
Join Meningitis Research Foundation in their first ever ‘Walk the Lough’ event on Sunday 16th September. The Foundation would like to encourage local people to take part in this stunning walk along the North Down Coastal Path and help raise vital funds for the charity. The walk will set out from the Grey’s Point, Helen’s Bay and through to Crawfordsburn Country Park. Continuing along the path to Bangor Marina and newly refurbished Pickie Fun Park. Here it’s time for a short break for refreshments before heading back to Helen’s Bay. Throughout this 10 mile walk you will enjoy fabulous views from the coastal path overlooking Belfast Lough. ON YER BIKE!
It looks like Belfast will be on its bike soon as a new scheme to provide public bicycle hire in Belfast has been given the go ahead. Roads minister Danny Kennedy revealed that £700,000 will be spent on the initiative which will be made available to Belfast residents and visitors, providing 300 bikes in 30 stands within the next three years. It is part of a wider scheme and a total £4.3 million investment from the Department of Regional Development in active travel demonstration projects which also include cycling and walking initiatives in Londonderry, Craigavon and Strabane. It will see a public bike hire scheme in the city for locals and visitors similar to the ones in Dublin and London, where the cycles have been nicknamed Boris bikes after mayor Boris Johnson. Sunday 23rd September marks a milestone event for conservation charity the RSPB as their supporters embark upon their inaugural abseil down Belfast’s iconic Europa Hotel. Participants will steel their nerves and brave the elements as they descend 130ft in the name of saving nature. Senior Community Fundraising Officer Laura Thomson said, ‘All the money raised from this abseil will go toward funding projects that benefit people and wildlife in Northern Ireland, supporting habitat management at one of our 10 local reserves or enable our Education Team to inspire and empower young people in schools to step up for nature from a young age.” For more information and to register to take part in the event please contact Laura Thomson on 028 9049 1547 or email laura.thomson@rspb.org.uk Gas Safety Week, coordinated by Gas Safe Register, will see the gas industry and consumer organisations come together to promote gas safety. Badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions as well as carbon monoxide poisoning. Art on the Eastside III As the main visual arts highlight for the East Belfast Arts festival, Creative Exchange Artist Studios have been working for the past six months to create the largest outdoor exhibition to ever take place in Belfast. ‘Art in the Eastside III’ celebrates the people, culture, history and social aspects of East Belfast bringing art directly to people on their own doorstep. In total there will be 26 billboards which will generate a large-scale arts trail across the area. The nine artists in the collective are renowned for their work locally, nationally and internationally. Creative Exchange also ran a competition for other artists to compete for a billboard. 11 artists have been selected to produce work for the show. They have also involved the local community dedicating six of the billboards to reflect local people ideas and hopes for the future. Audiences can view the billboards in situ or in one place as images of all the billboards will be hosted in the Portview Trade Centre, 276 Newtownards Road Belfast. www. creativeexchange.org.uk

Action Cancer, is calling on adventurers from East Belfast to join them on Trek Vietnam 2013, covering approximately 70 rugged kilometres in the north of this breathtaking country, passing through pristine jungle before enjoying the bustling markets, tree-lined avenues and colonial charm of Hanoi. Participants will walk for up to six hours a day, trekking the ancient mountain passes and terraced paddy fields of the Sapa region, camping in remote villages and interacting with local hill tribes. Trekkers will be raising vital funds for Action Cancer’s range of early detection and support services for those suffering from cancer in Northern Ireland and their families. These services include a unique breast screening programme for women aged between 40 – 49 and over 70, counselling, health promotion, and complementary therapy. Action Cancer Events Officer Lyn Palmer commented, ‘Everyone who participates in our overseas treks has their own reason for supporting Action Cancer, they all have the same determination and dedication to raise vitals funds for the charity. Here are some of Elaine’s tips for the forthcoming season. Firstly there are a number of ‘key’ looks which can be broadly described as:

Country
Think tweeds and tartan. Tailored jackets in either of these fabrics will team well with jeans/narrow 7/8 trousers. MarcCain provide hacking style jackets or soft tweed knits. Moschino Cheap and Chic gives us a well cut tartan jacket which can look quirky with a jodhpur style trouser from Isabel de Pedro or can be worn for a modern take on the suit with a beautiful black pencil skirt from MarcCain or Moschino.
Equestrian
This Ralph Lauren look is now a modern classic which doesn’t really date. Think slim trousers tucked into long riding boots, a crisp MarcCain white shirt, a well tailored jacket, and a beautifully printed scarf around your neck and you are sorted! From deep purples and claret reds to the more subtle shades of cinnamon and paprika it really is a tale of berry and spice. Liven up these tones with neutral nudes and pastel greys and there really is no easier way of releasing our more elegant feminine self. That said, if warm femininity isn’t your thing, then there’s a boy Sandwich meets girl theme which has its place in all collections this season. Mannish tailoring with big shoulders, skinny ties and oversize coats is a look at its finest when softened slightly. Tailored jackets with soft tweed trousers look great teamed with killer heels, that masculine feel still in every garment yet made womanly and seductive if trousers are cropped, daring us to bare a little more than is deemed totally necessary...well, why not?? But if that isn’t working for you, keep the styles the same but instead of the sharp tones of blacks, greys and purples keep your colours soft. Sandwich Making a huge comeback this season and has to be one of my personal favourites, is black leather... beautifully cut and elegantly tailored, mix it up with a bit of vintage lace and you are definitely good to go. All in all it’s a season of contrasts. Christine Gorman’s Off-One Designs feature collage pieces that are truly unique.
ff-One Designs is a business Christine started 6 years ago. ‘My background has been varied and I originally had a concept shop called Off-One, which opened in 2006, offering one-off fashion pieces, by various London based designers, I also stocked jewellery and bespoke artworks and crafts, supporting local art and design graduates. I closed my shop to concentrate on collage artworks from my studio, as this form of art work really appealed to me. My work consists of commissioned pieces that offer something different.’ Pieces are constructed using, images, text, print, pattern and colour and Christine also uses humour. Each piece is different and using various mediums, she makes the piece individual. ‘Colour and pattern are areas that I can be very creative with. I have always been interested in how a piece of art comes together, I like the fine detail of my work, each piece takes time to research and compile. I also like to incorporate hidden images or secrets that a client would have to find. Artworks can be commissioned upon request, creating a personalized one-off piece for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings.’ Christine’s inspiration comes from varied sources, from everyday objects, nature, colour and pattern, to words and print. She feels the very ordinary can be as inspiring as much as great artworks. ‘I am very interested in the clean lines of Scandinavian design and Japanese art. Vintage materials and modern materials can marry very well in an artwork. My designs are quirky with an edge to them. I have always had an eye for something unusual and being very creative I try to use this to offer something different to the client. I use old and modern materials together creating texture and tone, plus print and words feature in my art. Each piece begins with a brief from the client, I then source images that I think work together. I like my pieces to be of a quality and integrity that is reflected in the time it takes to create. It’s a story, but furthermore it reflects the person who has decided to give my artwork as a gift, I like the collaboration of all three of these elements. It works to form an individual aesthetic for each piece. What motivates me is the possibility that my work can give pleasure and be uplifting. My designs are constantly evolving, but retain individuality. I also collage furniture, using mid-century pieces that can be transformed into art that create a talking piece for the home. Each piece is distinctive, sometimes a theme can be used to create an individual piece for the customer.’ Christine’s work has been shown at various galleries, including the Mad Art Gallery in Dublin, and also a collection of bespoke artworks centred around The Titanic are on display at The Pump House Gallery in the Titanic quarter and in various art collectives in Belfast and galleries throughout Northern Ireland. Park Life: The History of ‘Vicky Park’ Emma Dunn, Honorary Secretary of the East Belfast Historical Society gives us the fascinating history of Victoria Park.

ictoria Park was first mentioned in the Belfast Dock Act of 1854 which authorised Belfast Harbour Commissioners ‘to set aside for the purpose of a public park to be called “Victoria Park” a portion of land not less than 50 acres.’ Before this the Queens Pleasure Island was the pleasant retreat for the people of East Belfast on a summers evening who paid their penny to take the ferry across the river. Many people also enjoyed bathing in the channel between there and Sydenham before it was filled in. This land was the first people’s park for Belfast, until the growing industrialisation of Belfast in 1853 when it was taken by Robert Hickson & Co for Shipbuilding. It was then decided to give the people of Belfast a smaller park though in 1881 the Surveyor who undertook the work on behalf of the Belfast Corporation stated that the land was so isolated that he could not see how it would benefit the people of Belfast, and he stated that “great changes ...would be absolutely necessary to convert this land into a suitable park.” A far cry from the zoos and greenhouses which were available on the pleasure island! A further report in 1886 also stated that it would be “useless to attempt forming an ornamental park of the usual type here”. In spite of this, and after extensive excavations in 1891 Victoria Park was formally transferred to the Belfast Corporation which offered a further £5000 loan to the original £2000 (equivalent to a total of over £400,000 today) which had been contributed by the Harbour Commissioners. The park was landscaped by John McKimm who also built the Tropical ravine in Botanic Gardens, and it was formally opened on the 15th of September 1906 by Alderman John McCormick. At this time it also included a lake for boating (still there) and a few years later an outdoor swimming pool was 20 www.bloommagazine.co.uk
constructed though this was initially only open to boys (it was said on a good summers day there could be up to 1500 bathers there!) The 1920s formed the heyday for the park. By this time it was a popular venue for cricket, bowling, swimming (the swimming pool was enlarged in 1923) and football. There was the sailing of model boats on the lake in summer and ice skating on the frozen lake in winter. There were also regularly performing musical bands. During the 2nd World War the park was closed to the public due to its close proximity to the docks and anti aircraft turrets were positioned in the park until after the end of the war. Sadly in 1969 the boathouse was destroyed by arsonists and had to be demolished, and in 1982 it was decided to close the pool due to the popularity of the new heated pool at Avoneil.In spite of a petition signed by those who wished the facility to remain it was deemed unsafe and was demolished in the early 1990s. In 1987 the open water at Victoria Park was declared an Area of Special Scientific Interest due to the many migrating wading birds such as oystercatchers and redshanks which feed there at high tide. Smoked Pork Steak with Whiskey Onions “ Pork
steaks are a tasty cut for the grill or smoker. They’re a good bargain too when you have a crowd to feed and it goes well with many fun flavours after a little bit of smoking. For this dish I chose whiskey and onions which are a great combo but feel free to tweak this one any way you like. ”
1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp dried basil 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp turmeric 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 1 Large red onion, halved and thinly sliced 60 ml Jack Daniels
a little more rub. Splash the whiskey over the onion. Cover with foil and return to the cooker for 2 hours more until the meat is tender when squeezed between your fingers. • Remove the pan from the cooker and carefully transfer the steaks to a platter. Top with the onion to serve.

Makes 4-6 servings 2 slabs pork ribs (about 2 1/2 pounds each) Ray’s Supersweet Rib Rub: 1/2 cup raw sugar 1/2 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup salt 3 tbsp chili powder 1 tbsp ground cumin 2 tsp black pepper 2 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp dried grated orange peel 1/4 tsp ground thyme 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 1 cup brown sugar 120 ml honey 1/4 cup butter melted 60 ml any pepper sauce Thick & Rich BBQ Sauce: 1/4 cup butter 1 small onion chopped 3 garlic cloves 1 jalapeno, minced 1/2 tsp celery seeds 480 ml ketchup
until lumps are gone. Rub may be stored for up to 6 months in airtight container in a cool place. • Prepare BBQ to 115°c using pecan wood for smoke flavour. Peel the membrane off the ribs and trim the fat. Season liberally with the rub. Place in the smoker section for 2 hours meat side up. Flip and cook for 45 mins. Lay out 2 thick sheets of foil. • For the sauce melt the Lay one slab on each piece butter and add the onion, of foil, meat side up. Top garlic and jalepeno. Cook for 8 minutes. Add the celery each slab with half the brown sugar. Drizzle each slab with seed and mix for 1 minute. Add ketchup, vinegar, honey, half the honey, butter and pepper sauce. Close up the mustard, apple juice, soy packages and return to cook suace, worcestershire, hot for 30 mins. When as you like sauce, tomato paste, liquid them, transfer to sheet pan, smoke, seasoning and mix and bring to simmer. Cook for brush bone side liberally with 20 minutes until thick. We meet Luigi, the proud owner of Lydia’s to hear what his motivation was to start his business and what his diverse, fresh menu has to offer.
‘I
t has always been a passion of mine to cook,’ says Luigi, owner of Lydia’s. ‘I always worked in the kitchen from when I was 15 in a bakery then restaurants, cafes etc. When I was a student in University studying International Relations, I worked at the weekends and in the evenings. I always worked for other people in the past, but I felt I had the experience and background to do something myself.’ Having grown his career in some cases into a managerial role, Luigi felt the time was right to go it alone, but if he was going to go for it, he wanted it to be special and to be a venture that was to be long term. ‘I wanted a business with longevity and to become established. I wanted to have a great location but that wasn’t the main factor, if you do good food, people will come from everywhere. But the key is high quality, affordable, good value food.’ And with this objective in mind, a location came up on Belmont Road and Lydia’s began. ‘Quality and quantity is very important. The menu has something for everyone and we have customers of all ages so it’s important to have a diverse offering. The most popular dishes are our pizzas and kebabs. The spaghetti bolognese is popular too. The pizzas might have the same names you are used to seeing, but we do them differently. The Lydia’s Special is one you won’t find anywhere else. The Volcano is very special too. Our special dishes are unique. Anything we do, will be different. You can think of a burger, what’s different? Our sauce, the toppings, plus everything is fresh, there are no pre-cooked ingredients and our pizza dough is made fresh on site too. You can see our menu on Facebook and order online through Just Eat and Nifty Nosh so it’s very flexible. We do deliveries too. Although our prices are very reasonable and we do meal deals too, we never compromise on quality. The menu is for guidance but if there’s a pizza you want we can make it specially from the toppings to the sauce. Just way what way you like it! We have great staff who are very experienced and dedicated.’ So with such a diverse offering and a pride and passion in what he is preparing and serving to his customers, it’s clear that Luigi’s determination to be in this business long term and has tremendous foundations for the future. ‘I love to cook. I love the way we do things differently. I eat all the food we cook too so it has to pass the test! It started off as a job and turned into a passion. I can never imagine working in another job.’ And finally, the name Lydia is as important to the business as the dedicated service he provides, ‘Lydia is my daughter’s name. Also her mothers name is Lydia, her grandmother too. It runs through the generations. She’s 8 and is a big motivation for me. Most dental practices will offer custom-made guards and getting one made is painless, quick and relatively inexpensive. Home of The Best The family home of George Best is now available as a holiday let. The legacy of a true legend lives on in the community.

urely one of East Belfast’s ultimate local legends, George Best’s legacy lives on in strength across the community. Still talked about by many as THE best, we all have our own distinct memories of this great man and what he achieved. Now his family home at 16 Burren Way in the Cregagh Estate where George lived until he moved to Manchester is to become available as a holiday let. Very much the focus of the Best family from the very beginning until quite recently, George aged two and half, his fifteen month old sister Carol and their parents Ann and Dickie moved into this house in January 1949. The Cregagh housing estate was brand new and the houses were greatly sought after as they included a bathroom. 16 Burren Way was the first house on the estate to be completed making the Best family the first occupants. George lived here until he moved to Manchester to play for Manchester United. At the height of George’s career the house was often under siege by the press and the family had to sit with the blinds closed on many occasions to try to get some privacy from the press who would camp out all night. It was from this house, at his own request, that George’s final journey took place on December 2005, to be laid to rest beside his mother in Roselawn Cemetery. The garden and hedges around the house were covered in flowers, shirts, cups, scarves, flags and pictures, left there by his fans from all over the world. In April 2008, 59 years after moving into the house, George’s Dad Dickie also left for the final time to be laid to rest with his wife and son. The house has 3 bedrooms – 1 double, 1 twin and 1 single (George’s Room). It is filled with interesting mementos, replicas, stories and images about George’s life, his family and his football career and just another legacy of this great man and inspiration. £60 - £125 per night, dependent upon the number of nights booked.
