Issue 8

Welcome In our last issue we were all lying misty eyed on the grass in hazy sunshine absolutely stinking of barbecue smoke and picking burnt skin from our shoulders. Summer had arrived. Then, before you knew it we were ringing out the rainwater from our hammock cushions and cursing Barra Best from here to kingdom come for his incessant tales of meteorological woes. So to cover all bases we have a beautifully serene front cover and a rather more damp welcome photo. So much has happened since our last issue and the biggest news is that of the East Belfast Arts Festival which runs from 5-9th September. We have all the info on that in our news pages but suffice to say that it is an absolute belter and will have a huge impact on everyone in East Belfast. Billed as ‘a celebratory statement and vision to promote a positive image locally, nationally and internationally, it will embrace an array of music, visual art, theatre, literature, heritage, film and comedy,’ we urge everyone to get involved in what is set to be a legendary few days. So, on to this issue and we have a cracking line up as always. We kick off with the news and then follow nicely into some health and beauty from our friends at The Secret Day Spa. We also talk to local pet experts on what they can offer your bessie furry mates and also some local hair aficionados offer current style tips for you. Our Rising Star is Arbee Cards whose creations are as charming as they are creative. Rosie Lovell, who The Observer called ‘A Nigella for the next generation’ gives you three amazing recipes and our Food Focus is the wonderful Chatters. Finally our Local Legend is The Strand cinema who have big plans to cement their legendary status even further. A big thank you to all our advertisers, please do support the local businesses we feature, tell them where you heard about them and keep that unique community spirit alive. East Belfast is in Bloom.

Bloom News Your local news & views

East Belfast Steps Into The Mystic as Local Legend Headlines Festival The biggest local news this month and possibly this year is that East Belfast Arts Festival is delighted to confirm Van Morrison as the headline act for the main music element of the festival taking place on Saturday 8th September. Special guest Shana Morrison and a full supporting line up showcasing the best local musical talent will take to the stage at Aircraft Park to entertain the crowds. The Saturday music festival is part of the five day East Belfast Arts Festival which will take place from the 5th- 9th September in various locations across east Belfast. The full festival boasts music, visual arts, performing arts, comedy, theatre, literature and heritage. Events include the biggest curated public art exhibition ever seen in Northern Ireland, an acoustic showcase of local musicians, a late night arts bus tour and even a zombie walk in the grounds of Stormont. East Belfast Arts Festival will be the first of its kind in the east. It will celebrate the area through creativity, energy and arts and will promote a positive image locally, nationally and internationally. The festival will provide locals and visitors alike the opportunity to visit venues they wouldn’t normally for arts based events and will be an opportunity for these venues to showcase their offering. It will also provide local artists with the opportunity to showcase their talent, and will create new audiences interested in the arts. Community participation in the festival through workshops and events will help connect art to the community thus increasing character and civic pride in the area. To find out more about your group/ organisation’s participation in the festival please email info@eastbelfastartsfestival. org or telephone Lisa on 028 9045 1900. Organisers wish to thank all the sponsors and partners involved who together will make this a festival to remember! Tickets for Saturday 8th available from www.ticketmaster.co.uk. For full line up, tickets and more information visit the website www.eastbelfastartsfestival.org 6 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

London is buzzing with the excitement of holding the Olympics this summer and this buzz has reached Belfast, as local Award winning textile designer and former Bloom Rising Star Jude Cassidy has been commissioned to weave a range of cushions for a London showroom celebrating the games. The designs will be influenced and reflect the Olympics hosted in GB in the use of silver and golds through out the woven patterns. www.judecassidy.com

American art students from Genesis Arts Studio in Kansas City, Missouri, recently arrived in Belfast to revamp the subway at Titanic Quarter Train Station in East Belfast (formerly known as Bridge End). Volunteers from Ballymac Community Group along with local residents are also taking part in the project that has been sponsored by Translink, East Belfast Partnership and DRD Road Service.

There will be tours of Miskelly House, Miskelly Hall, and the classrooms of Rodden House and is a great opportunity to gather together and share many happy memories. Tickets (adults £15, concession £10) for this special celebration and afternoon tea are available from the school, and further details are on the school website www.strathearn.org.uk

CHOCOLATE PARTY SUCCESS!

Local chocolate geniuses Aunt Sandra’s Candy Factory recently hosted a workshop for Bloom readers that was a huge success. With a full house, the kids and adults got straight down to business as the hosts laid out the tasks ahead which involved fun from beginning to end. A history of Aunt Sandra’s and a demo on how the sweet magic happens was followed by quizzes, laughs and of course the joy of learning how to make a multitude of chocolate creations that each of the attendees were able to take home. Judging by the chocolate smeared hands and faces, a wonderful night was had by all with plenty of edible souvenirs. Phone 028 9073 2868 or visit www.auntsandras.com

HITTING A TITANIC TOTAL A fantastic £21,324.41 was raised for Bowel Cancer UK following the recent Titanic Yardmen Cycle and Walk. Over 1,000 people got their flat caps on, walked and cycled to raise money for and awareness of bowel cancer. The event was a continuation of the work of the late Rosi Kirker-Miller who, following diagnosis with bowel cancer, was dedicated to raising awareness of and funding for the treatment of bowel cancer, the second biggest cancer killer in the UK with almost 16,000 deaths per year. Wendy Langham, from the Connswater Community Greenway, who helped organise the event said, ‘We were overwhelmed with the response we received from members of the East Belfast community and beyond. This money and the awareness raised will make a big difference in Northern Ireland in the fight against bowel cancer.’ Event support came from Belfast City Council, East Belfast Partnership, Edwards and Co. Solicitors, Fitzers, MCE Public Relations, Titanic Foundation, Trackers, Novesco, Bradley Quinn Photography, Business Scientific Services Ltd, Thompsons Family Teas, Tayto and Hastings Hotel Group. Picture; Martin Miller and Wendy Langham of the organising team and Lord Mayor, Alderman Gavin Robinson hand over the cheque to Deborah Alsina (Chief Executive, Bowel Cancer UK). D’oh! A Deer, a Female Deer

The first baby deer to be born at Streamvale for 3 years arrived on Monday 11th June right in front of Hazelwood College pupils. The young people were delighted to see such a wonderful sight and many of the afternoon visitors also managed to see our wee bambi tottering around after her mum. We ran a naming competition on facebook and after a massive response the public voted for “Shika” which means baby deer in Japanese! She will continue to stay with the herd and we hope that she will be clearly visible to all visitors over the summer. Fingers crossed that there will be more in the next couple of weeks. www.streamvale.com

The Modern Art Gallery situated at 92 Castlereagh Road is a gallery with a difference and with the mission to shake things up and challenge the expectations of what an art gallery should be. The aim is to bring the buzz back into the art world while recognising the incredible variety of local talent we have right here on our doorstep. The gallery believes art is something that should be fun, exciting and accessible to everyone. Whilst Northern Ireland is incredibly lucky to have so many local artists producing exciting and original work everyday The Modern Art Gallery feels it is time to show them how much their dedication is appreciated. Rather than hoping that the work will be noticed in passing the gallery is very active in promoting its artists across the province through regular events and exhibitions.

Summer Baby Boom! Many women give up spa treatments when they are pregnant. However, pregnancy can be a fantastic time to indulge in a little bit of pampering. Many spas offer a wide range of pampering treatments for pregnant women to help them relax, soothe aching muscles, and feel refreshed.

Foot Treatments

Pedicures and foot massages are especially nice if you’re suffering from swollen ankles due to pregnancy. There are many foot treatments you can choose from such as foot massages, reflexology, and pedicures.

Massage

Full body massage is our fantastic way to soothe aching muscles due to pregnancy. While you might feel self conscious about your body, keep in mind that the massage therapist is used to massaging pregnant women. Many massage therapists even specialize in prenatal massage. Tell your massage therapist if you have been particularly sensitive to strong smells, your therapist will probably be able to use a product to make sure you’re comfortable.

Facials

Facials are another fantastic beauty treatment for pregnant women. Not only is this treatment very relaxing, but it also makes you look fantastic. Facials are usually done lying on a chair but if you’re not comfortable sitting in that position, your esthetician can accommodate you and let you sit in a more comfortable position.

Manicures

Manicures and treatments are perfectly safe during pregnancy. There are many basic manicures available that include basic nail shaping and polishing. If the scent of nail polish is too strong for you, you might want to choose a simple hand massage instead. These treatments are great to melt the stress and strain away.

Health & Beauty

Welcome to The Secret Day Spa beauty page. Keeping the good people of East Belfast looking gorgeous & feeling fantastic!

A few things to keep in mind

Your skin can be very sensitive during this time. Some products that might never have bothered you before might give you a rash or cause a reaction. Let the therapist know that you’re pregnant and she will most likely use a mild product during the massage or body treatment. Why not pamper yourself to a relaxing spa treatment?

[Comfort Zone} Vital Leg CreamFresh nourishing cream-gel that contributes in relieving heaviness in the legs.

[Comfort Zone] Glorious Skin Lift Busting Cream – This nourishing formulation is for bust and décolleté and has a tonifying action for visible lifting effect.

Furry Friends

There’s a saying that goes, ‘if a cat could talk, it wouldn’t’. Which defines their differing personalties beautifully. However, it’s fair to say that if a dog could talk, you wouldn’t have a hope of shutting it up! Our tirelessly loyal furry friends are forever by our sides so we spoke to some local fellow cat, dog and animal lovers and chatted about what they can do for your best friend.

Animal Connexions

Grace Leigh: ‘The charity was founded in 1996 due to the many needless deaths of new born puppies and kittens, and to help in any way we could with unwanted, abandoned and abused dogs and cats. We have a very strict ‘no kill’ policy. Working from our own homes and private kennels, the charity was and is still, very small in numbers, however we are always happy to welcome new volunteers to our team. Since 1996, more than 6,000 needy furbabes have been rescued and adopted to wonderful homes, this does not include the many we help in other ways. Sometimes, due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, we are asked to help rehome a dog from one family to another. We have a superb network of people which allows us to help in these circumstances. We are often the last port of call for dogs that are at high risk of being put to sleep in Northern Ireland pounds. These healthy dogs are at risk simply because no-one wants them. We also carry out much needed and valuable animal awareness and welfare work across the community. We cannot deal with wildlife but we can get in touch with those who specialise in this. We are often asked to give talks to community and church groups, and are more than happy to do this on request. In realistic terms it takes around £2,500 a month to run our charity. Our main expenses are veterinary treatment, food and kennel fees. We do not receive grants so therefore have to fund raise to keep our work on going. We would be unable to continue if it were not for the wonderful generosity of our supporters and the general public. All monies raised go directly to the animals. At present Animal Connexions are working very hard to raise the profile on animal welfare and responsible ownership, including spaying, neutering & micro chipping. We know the road will be long and hard and we will tread it step by step, one day at a time, knowing that we have been given a great privilege to take care of the animals.’ Cats/kittens – Tel: 028 9061 9187. Dogs and puppies – Tel: 028 9261 2745. Registered Charity No: XR 59540

Celebrate Good Times

A

There are so many special occasions to celebrate throughout the year, the incredible creations from Arbee Cards help you do it in style.

rbee Cards are a Belfast stationery company with big ideas. Owner Rachel is a Fine Art graduate with a background working freelance in both art/design and the media. ‘I’ve been creative ever since I was very little,’ says Rachel. ‘I was always making cards and personalised presents for family and friends, including making wedding stationery as a gift for any family getting married. I wondered if it was something that could be a unique business. My last ‘proper’ job was working freelance in radio. It was interesting but I really missed design and being creative. It was early 2010 when the credit crunch was really hitting and I saw the Invest NI ‘Go For It’ advert on tv and after some encouragement from my mum and sister, I rang the number and got myself booked in to one of the courses. After learning what starting a business would involve, and getting a lot of positive feedback from the Invest NI (East Belfast Enterprise) team, everything just seemed to fall into place and I started planning in April 2010 for my business launch a few months later in June.’ Arbee are all about celebrating the good times - weddings, birthdays, holidays, milestones and every day ‘hellos’ that spread a little happiness in the morning post including ready-made, custom designed and personalised stationery and greeting cards for weddings, events, parties, birthdays, business design and corporate stationery. They’ve created stationery and invitations for business events, customised Christmas cards for local businesses, baby cards and new address cards.‘We specialise in vintage-inspired designs in both our wedding and ready made stationery - I have a collection of old magazines, postcards, etchings, vintage stamps, buttons and bits dating from the 1920’s and older that I use in the designs to keep everything really authentic. It’s great to see the designs making people smile. There’s quite a few grins from our ‘Wee Dote’ baby cards and ‘Happy Birthday Old Bean’ Fifties’ pastiche birthday card. We try to keep things as green as possible, offering products made from recycled and upcycled materials, even seeded paper that can be planted afterwards to grow wildflowers instead of throwing the card or invitation away.’ A big highlight for Rachel is the market stall in St George’s Market, Belfast every weekend. Being a market trader and part of the vibrant independent art, design and craft community there, meeting and chatting to customers gives her the opportunity to keep in touch with what people want. ‘I’m in my dream job - I love paper, design, typography and stationery and when I’m not working, I’m always browsing other art, design and stationery websites, and in shops and galleries. Getting to do this full-time and being chosen to work on such important personal occasions as someone’s wedding really is wonderful. We personalise anything free of charge - making personalised cards and stationery was how I got started and it’s something we’ll always continue. It just makes people smile!’ Visit Arbee Cards’ stall at St George’s Market, Belfast, every Sat & Sun. Panzanella

Supper With Rosie All of us have family recipes handed down the generations or those borrowed from friends that make up our culinary comfort zone. In Supper with Rosie, Rosie Lovell takes inspiration from the most memorable dishes taught by her mother, served to her friends and picked up on her travels. She gives each one her own spin to bring you accessible dishes full of flavour. Here’s just a taster.

www.bloommagazine.co.uk 23

Panzanella “A

Florentine salad in origin, for me this recipe strongly evokes a great trip to Sydney, where I first made it. Ingredients in this heavenly city are abundant and vivid and thoroughly inspiring. Panzanella is all about assembling, which is easy, and mixing and matching. Best of all it uses stale bread, so it is super economical. The bread becomes moist from the wet, ripe tomatoes, making your spoils taste deliciously comforting, but also tart and summery. You can alternate the ingredients according to what is around. Sometimes I use feta, which is delicious and salty. You can also use mozzarella too. ”

Serves 5–6 450g yellow baby plum tomatoes, halved 450g baby plum toms, halved 1 med red onion, finely sliced 40g fresh basil, ripped 280g stale ciabatta in chunks 100g capers in brine, drained 100g pitted black olives, halved 1 tbspoon red wine vinegar 3 tbspoons ex virgin olive oil freshly ground black pepper 2 garlic peeled and crushed 1/2 teaspoon caster sugar 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 250g ricotta

Pepperoncini Frittata

Tip the whole salad out onto a large serving dish and crumble over the ricotta. Leave for half an hour to allow the flavours to melge before serving.

Pepperoncini Frittata

“I

learnt this trick for cooking peppers from my Italian friend Find a large mixing bowl and Ileana. Fried then poached in combine both the yellow and red tomatoes. Using your hands, a little stock, the strips of gradually mix in the onion, basil, pepper become soft and almost jammy. Utilise this method for chunks of bread, capers and black olives. In a separate bowl, the ultimate frittata, or simply cook up the peppers and serve beat together the vinegar, oil, pepper, garlic, sugar and salt to as a salad with lemon juice and make a dressing. Taste to check garlic. This recipe is just one way of making a frittata. You that it is well seasoned (but be can add pretty much anything aware it doesn’t need to be too like spring onions, tomatoes, sharp because the tomatoes Parmesan, spinach, bacon so just have their own acidity). Pour use what you have available the dressing over the salad and perfect for a weeknight supper.” combine thoroughly with your

hands – by now the bread should Makes 4 thick wedges be starting to soften from the 4 tablespoons olive oil dressing and the tomato juices. 2 red peppers, deseeded and 24 www.bloommagazine.co.uk

sliced into strips 200ml vegetable stock 1 small onion, finely sliced 4 free-range eggs 70g goat’s cheese a handful of parsley, basil or marjoram, finely chopped lots of freshly ground black pepper and a little sea salt. Heat half of the oil in a medium frying pan over a moderate heat. When it is quivering, add the peppers and sauté for a few minutes to coat them in the oil. Pour in the vegetable stock and simmer for about 20 minutes until it has all evaporated. When there is no liquid left and all you have is the original oil, turn up the heat and continue frying the peppers until they are flecked with brown and give off a charcoal scent. Remove the peppers from the pan with a slotted spoon and place on a plate to cool. Return the pan to a moderate heat, add the onion and fry until soft and translucent – about 5 minutes. Transfer to the plate with the peppers.

Heat the remaining olive oil in a cast-iron frying pan on a medium-to-high heat. Whilst this gets hot, beat the eggs in a measuring jug and stir in the cooked peppers and onions. Crumble in the goat’s cheese, add the parsley and seasoning and combine really well with a fork. Pour the whole lot into the pan and give it a quick shake to settle the frittata. Turn the heat to low and leave to cook for 5 minutes, or until the frittata is starting to firm up around the edges but is still wobbly in the centre. Preheat your grill to medium. To finish, crisp up your frittata under the grill and cook until it is just turning golden brown. Leave to stand for 5 minutes in the pan before turning out onto a plate.

Trifle Two Ways Summer Trifle “ Everyone

loves a trifle. It is the British tiramisu and conjures up images of long summer lunches and excessively enjoyable gluttony. I have added pomegranate to my classic summer trifle, which gives a lovely juicy unorthodox crunch. Andrew Murray- Watson sent me his mum’s traditional trifle recipe, which is heavy on the almonds but doesn’t contain fruit and is drunk with sherry. In the winter version I have adopted his keen use of almond and sherry. Using tinned fruit makes a good alternative for winter festivities. Make sure you have a nice deep bowl, preferably glass so you can see the delicious layers of excess. ”

1 ripe pomegranate 500g fresh summer berries 40g toasted flaked almonds Break up the Madeira cake and almond fingers into a mixing bowl and cover them in the sherry. Let this sit and the flavours merge. Meanwhile, heat 300ml of the double cream and the milk over a moderate heat. Remove from the heat just before it comes to the boil. In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, cornflour, sugar and vanilla until they form a pale paste. Still using your whisk, slowly combine the hot milk with the egg mixture and beat until smooth. Return the custard to the pan, set over a very low heat and stir continuously with a wooden spoon until the sauce thickens. When the custard is thick enough to coat the back of your spoon – you want it to be fairly thick – take it off the heat and set aside to cool slightly and start to set.

You will need a nice deep glass bowl to assemble the trifle in. Place half of the soaked cake in the bottom of the bowl. Remove the pomegranate seeds from the whole fruit and scatter half of them over the top. Layer on half of the summer berries and finish with half of the custard. Set aside in the fridge to firm up slightly for an hour. You can then add the remaining cake mix, followed by the fruit and custard layers. To finish, whip the remaining cream until it forms soft peaks. Spoon over the trifle and scatter with the almonds. Set in the fridge for a few hours to firm up completely.

Get the best of your hair with our local expert advice! How to protect hair from the sun by Kenneth Michael ‘Products with UV filters or sunscreens for the hair do offer some protection. As with skin products, you need to reapply them to keep the protection constant. Ideally avoid exposure when the sun is highest and most damaging - between the hours of 11am and 3pm. As well as damaging its protein structure, UV light also attacks the pigment in your hair, breaking it down, bleaching it and reducing the hair’s natural defence system. ‘Darker hair has greater natural protection from UV, just like darker skin,’ explains hair scientist Dr Steve Shiel, ‘but if you chemically lighten darker hair it loses its natural protection, making it more vulnerable to UV.’ Blonde hair, whether natural or coloured, has very little pigment and is therefore at greatest risk in the sun. In addition, use products specifically for coloured hair to prevent rapid colour fade. Beat the chlorine effect - Chlorine can make the cuticle of the hair rough so it looks less shiny and, if it’s longer, it can get very tangly. Some women complain of a greenish tinge to their hair when they have been using the pool a lot. This has nothing to do with chlorine, but rather copper or iron algicides that are used to stop the growth of algae, according to Dr Steve Shiel. ‘If hair is coloured and therefore more porous, it sucks up copper from the water, which can result in a greenish effect,’ he explains. Your hairdresser should be able to correct it, but you might also like to try rinsing your hair with soda water or tomato juice, which some say counteracts the green. Combating seawater damage - Seawater acts like a sponge and draws water out of the hair, while also leaving a surface-dulling deposit if you don’t rinse it away. It can also penetrate the hair shaft and have the knock-on effect of breaking down amino acids and roughening the cuticles. Rinsing or shampooing your hair as soon as you can after a dip helps, but the best protection is again a swimming hat or a specially formulated protective product.’ 221-223 Woodstock Road. Phone 028 9045 5740.

Current celebrity trends & how to get the look by Peter Oliver & Team Lisa Falkner (manager), Aime Robinson & Vicki McClug of Peter Oliver have given us an insight into three celebrities providing inspiration this season. ‘Kate Middleton continues to lead the way with her big & bouncy tousled curls. To achieve this look wash and blast dry the hair, spay with Label M Blowout Spray. Divide hair into 12 -15 sections, wind each section of hair round a variety of medium - large velcro rollers. Leave for 40 mins and unwind. Apply Blowout spray again for hold. Pixie Lott is working the beach babe look. Her naturally curly hair looks like she’s just spent a day at the beach. If you have a wave or curl you can recreate this look doing the following: Wash and towel dry, apply Label M Curl Cream to add moisture to frizzy and dry hair. Splitting into horizontal sections starting at the back working your way up to the crown, twist a small section of hair around your finger to twist into a curl. Unwind and allow hair to spring into a curl. When hair is 80% dry set with Seasalt Spray. Rooney Mara sets the trend for the androgyny look. Think cropped short blunt fringe! This look has a wide demographic appeal for both long and short hair and has played an intricate part in trends for the last few seasons for not only hair but clothes and makeup as well.’ 223 Upper Newtownards Road. Sensational, Seasonal Creations

C

Pride of place on Bloomfield Avenue for years, we speak to Chatters owners Raymond Brady and Alan Rebell about how their unique approach and fresh seasonal ingredients make it such a success.

hatters itself has had a number of different owners in its estimated 26 year history, but Raymond has been working here for 14 years now. One of the originals on the road along with Annabel’s and Visage, Raymond was a trained chef and first came to work here through an agency as holiday cover. ‘I loved it straight away and got on so well with everyone. The girl came back from holiday but they asked me to continue to help out. The business was sold on a few times after that but I always loved it and stayed throughout.’ Raymond’s partner Alan came from a business background with spells in management development, marketing, personnel and retail. But when he met Raymond, an opportunity arose and it was one that was to change their lives forever. ‘Raymond was working here and when previous owners Irene and Mervyn were going to sell, we were given the option to buy in 1998. Raymond was the chef and knew what to do and I invested in the business with him. He ran it and I was a silent partner working in my own job but helping out on Saturdays. Then my workplace began laying people off and I was out of a job.’ All of a sudden Alan became fully involved working in Chatters helping out Raymond and they have developed it together with their dual backgrounds combining sublimely. Chatters have loyal customers who visit week in week out, even from before Raymond started. ‘That customer base is wonderful and we’re very grateful,’ says Alan. ‘They get to know us personally and we also run a text service and keep them posted on what we’re doing.’ The tastes for food have changed over the years and Chatters have adapted to that, as Raymond explains. ‘People expect a high standard of nutritious, healthy food along with the classics. We do savoury tarts, seasonal based food, pasta, chicken, vegetarian etc. We listen to what the customers want and recently vegetarian food has become very popular, even with meat eaters.’ But the menu can change very quickly if something sells out because Raymond has the diverse skills. Plus nothing is bought in, everything is made in house right down to the jam. ‘We maintain the highest quality throughout and we will not fall below that. We take on all roles here, multitasking, so we get to hear feedback directly.’ So where does the inspiration for the incredible food come from? ‘I eat out a lot, travel, read, speak to friends and get inspired that way,’ says Raymond. ‘But I add my own angle to things and try to make it unique. For example our chicken, caramelized red onion and ginger tart or the roast cherry tomato, brie and goats cheese crumble.’ Alongside this are some classics as Alan adds, ‘We have a classic quiche lorraine which I love and a savoury mince pie for those that want something more meaty. Anything can be taken with a side of salad, couscous, rice, chips etc and you get good value for money. But if there’s nothing you fancy and we have the time, Raymond can do something specifically for you. We like to keep it varied and our line up can change throughout the day as Raymond creates it plus we do take away and outside catering too. Flexibility, customer service and listening is what it’s all about.’

Local Legend

Left: The striking and iconic Strand. Below: The family with The Drifters who performed here in the 80’s

Stage & Screen An entertainment hub for decades, The Strand Cinema has big plans ahead.

T

he Strand was designed by Belfast man John McBride Neill, the renowned Northern Ireland cinema architect who also created The Apollo, Mountpottinger Picturedome, The Majestic, The Troxy and the Curzon to name but a few. His art deco designs featured sumptuous glamour and comfort. ‘The Strand opened in 1935 and has always been a cinema,’ says Linda Smyth whose family run the business. Back then it was one screen and over the years it opened and closed off and on. It then closed in the late 70’s and lay dormant for years, becoming very run down. We reopened it in 1986 as a variety theatre with 1,000 seats and we had the likes of The Drifters, Ben E King, The Nolans, Dana, Little & Large and loads of country and western. It ran for about 2 years and closed early 1988.’ The family were then approached by a cinema group to reopen and had the idea of splitting the theatre into four screens and reopened. The refurb was done in 1999 and went right back to the art deco style of the period it was built, making it the iconinc East Belfast building it is today. They’ve been open ever since and are one of the last independent cinemas. Everything is going digital but they still use 35mm film that needs properly projected. ‘The films come in reels in cartons and the projector has to make them up, joining each one together from scratch. After they get stripped back and repackaged to move on the next cinema or wherever it’s needed. The building is owned by Stuart Knox who is a partner in The Strand and my dad Ronnie Rutherford is also a director. My husband works here too so it’s a big family operation. There’s a lot of work that goes into running the business.’ The cinema has a tremendous loyal support from regulars. They also have school visits and in turn they support them too by giving tickets which they use for pupils with good attendance etc. ‘We also help with a lot of charity events. It’s good for charities as we can do a red carpet night and we have a reception room upstairs for beforehand and you can go straight into screen one so it’s a lovely combination for an event.’ So with a remarkable history behind it, there are big plans for The Strand and its future. Recognising its roots, Linda and the family are putting the final touches to opening one space as a theatre again. ‘It will be in screen two which was the original stage. It holds about 190 people so it will be a very intimate space for plays, comedy nights, bands, talent shows and that kind of thing. We’ve had lots of enquiries over the years and recently so it’s shaping up nicely. It’s also a niche, affordable night for local people too. We’ve had all the lighting and sound organised and are just in the final stages of confirming everything. There’s nothing quite like it in terms of a venue in the area so feedback has been great.’ So look out for news on the next phase of this East Belfast legend coming soon. 152-154 Holywood Road, Belfast.
