NEWS East Belfast Chess Club causes whirlwind in Ulster Chess Scene Established just over a year ago in February 2017 at the picturesque Strand Arts Centre on the Holywood Road, Strand Chess Club has won 4 major titles, a record for a debut club! On Sunday 29 April, the club gathered to celebrate their victories with the annual prize-giving ceremony (photo attached). In February 2018, the club won the Ulster Rapidplay Team Championships in a field with over 70 of the top players from all across Northern Ireland. Then in April 2018, the teenage team of Strand 3 won Division 4 of the Belfast and District Chess League. This was followed a week later by the primary school team of Strand 4 winning Division 3! Club Director Ross Harris says “We are delighted to have made such an impact during our first season. East Belfast was lacking in an outpost for chess lovers and without public funding it can be hard for clubs to find a safe venue for children of all ages to learn chess and play in competitive matches. Thankfully with the wonderful support of the staff at the Strand Arts Centre, we have been able to grow the club from strength to strength. The Strand Chess Club is happy to accept new members, young and old, regardless of experience. The ordinary club sessions are fun and relaxed and run every Sunday from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. It costs £2 per week for children or £3 for two kids from the same family. For more information contact Ross Harris at strandchessclub@gmail.com

High Steaks New menu at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill in Belfast has something for everyone The Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill has launched a new menu for summer at the restaurant in east Belfast. Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill opened its first and only outlet in Northern Ireland in the four-star Park Avenue Hotel in October 2015. Since then, over 50,000 diners have enjoyed the restaurant and continue to head east for the unique experience. The restaurant has attracted foodies seeking succulent sirloin, fillet, T-bone and rib eye steaks sourced from Rodgers Meats in Gilnahirk, and classic French dishes to tickle their taste buds, as well as contemporary cocktails, exclusive Marco Pierre White Wine served with a great atmosphere and impeccable service. Lauren Goodwin, Manager of the restaurant says; “Our menu is packed with the finest produce and has evolved to keep up with the Marco Pierre White standards. Our new options include seared scallops with black pudding and crispy pancetta, and the Alex James Burger, named after the Blur musician and good friend of Marco’s, featuring his own artisan Blue Monday cheese. Other popular dishes include the Poached Pear Salad which features that famous blue cheese, and the 160z roast Chateaubriand for two. Surprisingly, vegetarians will love the Steakhouse’s new menu selection with velvet artichoke, gnocchi pomodoro and Marco’s speciality – baked macaroni cheese with poached hen’s egg. Lauren continued; “We are passionate about using local produce where we can, and our other suppliers include Get Fresh in Dunmurry and Keenan’s Seafood in Belfast, which brings us freshly caught seafood each morning from Kilkeel, Portavogie and Ardglass.” Desserts include many of Marco’s favourites including his famous ‘Mr White’s Billionaire’s shortbread, rich caramel and gold leaf’ and classics such as baked cheesecake and a sticky toffee pudding. A selection of white, red and blush wines are available to match alongside every dish on the menu. Lauren added; “Our team is well versed on which tipple works best with each dish, so we’re delighted to be able to exclusively offer Marco’s own range of bottles here in Belfast.”

NEWS SHU launches Chef Apprenticeship Programme 2018 SHU has been one of Belfast’s best restaurants for over 18 years, creating award-winning dishes and nurturing world-class chefs able to work anywhere in the world. And this week sees them launch their hugely successful and highly coveted ‘SHU Chef Apprentice Programme’ in partnership with Belfast Metropolitan College. Now in its second year, the Programme will give four budding cooks aged between 16-24, first-hand experience in working with the finest seasonal produce, in a professional kitchen with the very best chefs in the business. The partnership with Belfast Met means that the apprentices will also receive a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery qualification. The restaurant is owned and operated by Alan Reid and Head Chef, Brian McCann. Alan says they have launched the Programme “In a bid to find young, passionate people with a serious desire to enter the industry and to help shape the future of the hospitality industry in Northern Ireland and beyond.’ The new Apprenticeship programme has been launched within SHU’s renowned ‘Centre for Cooking Excellence’, which is headed up by Brian a former Great British Menu star, who says following year one’s success, year two will be an even better version. He said: “We are just concluding our first year of the programme and we are so glad we did – it has been hugely successful, rewarding and has allowed us to find two exceptional young chefs who we have now offered a full-time job to. “I myself started out my career as an apprentice chef so I understand the challenges and apprehensions that young people have at the beginning. We have made this a fun, fantastic programme which is hard work, but also hugely rewarding and gets the apprentices right into the thick of it from day one.” Brian concluded: “I want to urge any young cook who has a real passion and determination to succeed in this industry to get in touch and apply for this amazing opportunity. No experience is necessary, but the right attitude is essential.” The SHU Chef Apprenticeship Programme is a one-year programme and will commence in September 2018. Students will spend three days working in the SHU kitchen learning classical French and Modern European-inspired cooking. They will also spend two days at college, learning the theory and practical elements of the job within the Belfast Met curriculum. The programme will be 35 hours per week and will be paid with Chef’s whites provided. Application forms are available NOW. To apply for the SHU Chef Apprenticeship programme email apprentice@shu-restaurant.com or visit www.shu-restaurant.com https://vimeo.com/274526010

East Belfast businesses get the perfect shot for White Weddings launch East Belfast’s Park Avenue Hotel has linked up with a host of local East Belfast businesses to create a stunning photo shoot to launch the White Weddings by Marco Pierre White experience at the popular venue. Mother and daughter duo, Mandy Patrick and Katrina Martin who run the hotel have recently secured the exclusive experience for local couples, as an extension to their Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill on site just as wedding season kicks in. The pair decided they wanted to keep everything local to show just how accessible all things weddings are to couples looking for the ultimate experience. For the photo shoot, a selection of stunning bridal gowns from Eden Bridal on Belmont Road were sourced by owner Kimberley Fairfowl, suits were sourced from Belfast’s Douglas & Graham, the bridal bouquet from Flowers of Elegance, Castlereagh Road, hair and makeup by Shaia Hassay, and Collette O’Neill
from Collette Creative, also based on Belmont Road, made everything come to life with her professional photography. Mandy commented; “We are delighted to launch White Weddings at Marco Pierre White and the Park Avenue Hotel. Recent wedding trend reports say that couples are looking for a unique venue and outstanding food, and those are exactly what we stand for with White Weddings. “The whole team had a fantastic day working with our neighbours here in Belmont and the wider East Belfast area. It’s so important that we all support each other to make our area continue to be one of the most visited and enjoyed in Belfast.” The venue also worked with local weddings specialists Charm Wedding Studio to dress the restaurant and the iconic Cranthorpe Suite, transforming them into a White Weddings paradise, with details second to none. Newly engaged couples can find out more about White Weddings by Marco Pierre White by searching ‘White Weddings by Marco Pierre White’ online and can enjoy a White Weddings Showcase at the Park Avenue Hotel in early Autumn.

Sunglasses, hay fever & your eyes Summer’s here! And for most of us that means more time outside enjoying the sunshine. However, the great outdoors can be harmful to your eyes - due to the effects of hay fever and the sun’s UV rays. UV damage Just as UV (ultra-violet) light damages your skin, so it can also harm your eyes. While some of the effects are temporary, others lead to serious long-term eye conditions. These include cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as skin cancer in the delicate tissues around your eyes and eyelids Sunglass protection The good news is that by wearing good quality sunglasses you can help protect your eyes from UV damage. Remember to always look out for the “CE” mark that guarantees safe levels of UV protection. Prescription sunglasses And if you wear spectacles, you needn’t miss out on UV protection. Many sunglass frames can be made up to prescription - including varifocals and bifocals. Transitions lenses are another great option offering full UV protection. These fast-reacting lenses darken outside in sunlight but stay clear indoors. Hay fever Research shows that in recent years hay fever is on the rise. As well as sneezing and runny noses, hay fever can cause considerable eye discomfort, making your eyes red, watery and itchy. Antihistamine tablets can help ease eye symptoms as well as relieving nasal and throat problems. Eye drops & advice If your hay fever symptoms are mainly eye-related, eye drops containing antihistamines or mast cell stabilisers offer targeted relief. It’s also a good idea to check the pollen forecast daily and consider staying indoors at peak times. Other useful tips include keeping windows closed, wearing wraparound sunglasses and applying cold compresses to your closed eyes. To find out more about protecting your eyes from hay fever and the sun, speak to your optometrist for specialist advice.

welcome people from all ages, all walks of life, with one common denominator, they want to lose weight, tone up and feel better about themselves.
NEW FAT-LOSS CLINIC IS A ‘CINCH’ FOR LOCAL BUSINESSWOMEN One of Northern Ireland’s most successful shape-wear companies, Cinch Corsets, has launched a dedicated fat loss and facial aesthetic clinic, committed to helping clients lose weight, tone up and rejuvenate the skin.
“Our corset product has been fantastically successful over the past couple of years, helping woman to lose stubborn belly fat and feel, and look better in and out of their clothes – the company sells both online and through dozens of shops across Ireland.
Cinch Clinic, located on High Street, Holywood has been launched by Nicola McIlhagger and Angela Hunter, who founded Cinch Corsets over three years ago. The four-room Clinic, specialises in the latest, cutting-edge, non-invasive fat loss treatments; Cryolipolysis, Cavitation and Radiofrequency, and has already proved a hit with men and women from across Northern Ireland.
“The new Clinic idea was born out every single one of our clients asking what other areas of the body we could help them target to shift fat. “We researched the very best treatments on the market, and in particular what the US market was doing – Cryolipolysis – or Fat Freezing and Cool Sculpting as it is more commonly known – which is one of
Nicola explains: “We opened the Clinic in early July 2017 and since then, we have been delighted to
12
the fastest growing non-invasive aesthetic treatments in the world, popular with celebrities across the globe, and with good reason. “This treatment is absolutely brilliant for anyone who has stubborn pockets of fat in any area of the body; from love handles, stomach, back fat, moobs, bum, arms to thighs. We can treat up to four body areas at any one time, with no downtime. “Angela and I both tried the treatment as part of the research process and were blown away by the results. We researched the best machine on the market, found premises, and almost 12 months on and we are doing really well. Cinch Clinic also specialises in a range of complimentary fat-loss treatments– cavitation, radiofrequency and a suction treatment as Radiofrequency facials which are claimed to be favoured by Kylie Minogue over Botox. The Cinch Corset product is the perfect complement to the new treatments, helping clients stay focused on their body goals and helping to sculpt and shape the waist area.
Nicola continued: “We have also uncovered a demand for facial aesthetics and have partnered with one of the most experienced and talented independent nurse practitioners in Northern Ireland, Sharon Loughran. We now offer Botox, Fillers, Vampire Facials, Mesotherapy, Plasma BT and Profhilo. All of which offer clients a choice in how to look more youthful, with brighter skin – but in a very subtle, natural-look, way. We are also about to launch a brand new treatment to the clinic, still using the Cryogenic technology – this treatment will be fantastic for further inch loss, but it will also treat pain and inflammation – for anyone who is dependent on painkillers, this treatment could replace that need. It is also fantastic for hayfever sufferers, psoriasis, exzema and hairloss and alopecia. Nicola concluded: “We are constantly developing and evolving our offering to ensure we can meet the demand for professional, non-surgical solutions to fat loss and wellbeing at affordable prices in Northern Ireland.” To view all treatments and products, visit www.cinchclinic.co.uk and to order a corset visit www.cinchcorsets.co.uk.
Home Styling & Decor News
With the arrival of summer, it’s the perfect time to give our bedrooms a seasonal refresh. We’re not going to get our beauty sleep when suffocated by thick, wintry bedding, fleece-lined throws and heavy curtains closing in the sticky summer heat. So, throw the windows open to let in that cool summer breeze and let’s give our bedrooms a quick revamp in time for the temperatures rising. Here’s how…
Layer your linen
First up, swap out your brushed cotton sheets and heavy eiderdowns for layers of cool, crisp, linen bedding. No need for the iron, either, as linen is one of those investment pieces that gets better with age and especially when beautifully crumpled and imperfect. Choose linen bedding in a soft palette of spring pastels or cool ivory and mix and match pillowcases, sheets and cushion covers in tonal hues to your liking. The best value linen bedding can be found online at H&M.
Add texture
Introduce woven accents into your bedroom, such as a rattan chair in the corner or wicker basket by the bed, for a laid-back, relaxed vibe. Choose lightweight bed throws, cushions and linens featuring embroidered and woven detail for added textural interest and have them folded at the end of the bed for those cooler summer nights.

Floral prints & pattern
Nothing says summer better than a bunch of freshly cut flowers from the garden, so why not make your bedroom feel like a little summer sanctuary with bedlinen, wall art or curtain fabric embellished with botanical and floral designs. The pops of pattern and colour will bring personality to white linen sheets and make the room feel fresh and zingy. Just be sure the colours are complementary with one another for a seamless, stylish look.
Enliven with plants
The ideal finishing touch to any room, plants can be particularly beneficial in a bedroom environment. They purify the air, thus contributing to healthy sleep, but their visual presence is also relaxing and soothing - perfect for helping you to unwind at the end of a long day! In smaller bedrooms, display plants in hanging pots or along a shelf above the bed. Enjoy the good weather and here’s to more restful sleep on those warm nights… K xx

SUMMER BALAYAGE
Balayage is a French word that means to sweep. It is a hair colour technique that allows for a sun kissed and very natural look. Its goal is to create the gold reflects that the sun gives naturally to hair in summer. More natural than a full head of colour, balayage is the ideal choice when you want something subtle, or to boost the natural reflects, and give a new dimension to your hair. Balayage gives a healthy-looking finish that looks glossy and expensive, which can be worn subtle or bold, it’s all about the application. A balayage from is extremely low maintenance and will grow out beautifully and very naturally so you don’t get a clear regrowth line. NATURAL FRENCH BALAYAGE
An ultra-natural Balayage result with a subtle hint of colour to add a bit of warmth to your hair, just in time for the summer. Think salted caramel and warm mocha tones, this look will give your hair a radiant and natural-looking glow. Best hair care for to protect the look: the Nutrifier range.

You may have noticed a new fitness and wellbeing contributor to Bloom - The Freedom Method, I attended a Freedom Fitness Retreat at the beginning of May and it was fabulous. Set in the stunning location of White Park Bay on the Causeway Coast we took part in two beach fitness sessions under Hollie’s expert guidance, received nutrition advice from Kathleen of Cohu Nutrition and unwound to blissful bedtime yoga from Susan of the Yoga Quarter. Amongst all this we feasted on delicious healthy food in abundance – we had two separate breakfasts – need I say more?! Hollie was superb in quashing any fears or trepidations, the fitness sessions were taken at our own individual pace and each activity was optional. Looking out onto the beautiful landscape of sea and sand for the course of the retreat was replenishing in itself. Pure nourishment for body, mind and soul. Keep an eye on the website (thefreedommethod.org) for future retreats and other special events in coming months including Soulful Sundays which you can read about on lyndsaymalone.com From the North Coast to the Coastal region of Mourne, Newry and Down: I was invited along on a NI Food tour to showcase the quality food & drink producers of the area. YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK!
Your mindset is a collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your thought habits. Your thought habits affect how you think, what you feel, and what you do. Your mindset impacts how you make sense of the world, and how you make sense of YOU. When we change our mindset to one of growth, we change the course of our lives. The journey of understanding what makes you tick, is not always an easy one. We begin to unravel what limiting beliefs and opinions we have of ourselves and the rest of society. It becomes the foundation upon how we perceive and react to stimuli around us. At Freedom Method Life and Mindset Coaching, we explore not only what you really want to achieve (in all areas of your life) but just as importantly, what it is that has been holding you back until now. Changing mindset can start right now. Here are just a handful of simple ways to improve your mindset on a daily basis: CHECK YOUR THOUGHTS Have you ever got up in the morning when the weather is cold and wet and said, This is going to be a bad day? It’s highly likely the day ahead will be much more of a challenge. Our thoughts are powerful. They create feelings, which leads to actions and behaviours that determine whether our day goes well. Learning that we can choose our thoughts is one of the most powerful things we can do to take charge of our lives. Taking five minutes to make sure our thoughts are positive, starts the day off with the right mindset.
JUST BREATHE Just a few minutes a day of quiet can relax our brains and create clarity for our most innovative ideas. Sit or stand in a quiet spot with limited distractions. Picture a place that is your idea of peace, perhaps an empty beach or tranquil mountain you have visited. Just breathe. SET YOUR INTENTION FOR THE DAY Before you leave in the morning, set an intention of how you want the day to flow. How do you want the actions you accomplish today to make you feel at the end of the day? This can include your relationships, your career and your own self care. What is one positive thing you can do that will make you feel better at the end of the day? QUIETEN THE NOISE The next time you’re travelling at the start of your morning. Find something uplifting to listen to when you begin your day. Do your morning commute without listening to the news or talking on the phone. Listen to your favourite music, something that leaves you feeling happy and inspired, or perhaps a podcast or audio book that gets you motivated and excited by new ideas. Or just observe what’s happening around you, taking in the colours and natural sounds. There will be plenty of time to find out what’s happening in the world when you get to your destination. Do this for a week and you will find yourself arriving at work or Uni in a calmer, more positive with a relaxed state of mind. www.thefreedommethod.org or email info@freedomretreats.org The Freedom Method thefreedommethod

Festival Style Inspiration From BBC 6 Music’s Biggest Weekend Our wee boogie at BBC 6 Music’s Biggest Weekend in Belfast has inspired the Parici team to create some festival looks for you this month. Reggae princess Hollie Cook’s tropical dance moves and the flower in her hair was the inspiration for this first look. A long soft dress with a tie dye effect will make sure you can dance loosely like Kate Bush and of course we’ve accessorized it with a head scarf. We’ve also teamed it with a mustard leather jacket and tan belt because we just can’t help adding one more layer in! We just had to create a Kate Moss Glastonbury 2010 throwback look too - an oversized waterproof mac
with a faded vintage feel and shorts. Wear the look with sandals or khaki Adidas Gazelles to make sure you can bounce around at the front of the stage. We couldn’t do a festival piece without creating a truly boho chic look now could we? This one’s for those of you who love that really spiritual vibe of a festival, romantic and boho yet super comfy, always. Two of our favourite acts at the Biggest Weekend were First Aid Kit and Super Organism so…here’s a look we put to together in their honour – country meets street style, we love it. You’d better believe we had a wee dance back in the shop after the festival too, ‘cause we did.
