Aly Harte said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be named among such wonderful small business champions celebrating the success of independently owned businesses throughout the UK. I’m committed to building my relationships with small business owners and believe that with collaboration we can certainly have a positive impact on the local economy. Little Wing serves up much-needed support to Kids’ Groups in Belfast Annual Little Stars Bursary Scheme set to return for the fifth year Northern Ireland’s favourite pizzeria, Little Wing, is serving up much-needed support to local children’s clubs in Belfast as it launches its Little Stars bursary scheme for the fifth year. Since the scheme launched in 2014, 26 children’s clubs from across Northern Ireland have benefited from much-needed cash boosts to support their activities. This year, a further eight local kids’ clubs will benefit from a £500 share of a £4,000 bursary pot. The Little Stars initiative is just one of the many ways in which Little Wing supports community groups across Northern Ireland. Over the last nine years, the homegrown pizzeria has donated over £100,000 to local community groups, schools and charities through various forms of sponsorships, bursaries, voucher donations and fundraisers. The Little Wing Little Starts bursary programme is open to all kids’ clubs working with children under the age of thirteen, which are located nearby to Little Wing’s eight restaurants across Northern Ireland. Branches include; Holywood, Bangor, Newtownards, Enniskillen, Lisburn, Lisburn Road Belfast, Ann Street Belfast and Ballyhackamore in East Belfast. Commenting on the return of the Little Stars bursary scheme, Luke Wolsey, Managing Director of Little Wing Pizzeria said: “This is the fifth year of our Little Stars bursary scheme, which is an integral part of our ongoing community outreach programme. We are proud of the role that Little Wing has played in supporting local children’s groups and how these bursaries have made such a big difference to groups right across Northern Ireland. “In light of the continuing funding cuts within the arts, community and voluntary sectors, we are proud to offer local clubs with much-needed funds, supporting them to continue to do an amazing job at supporting, encouraging and inspiring children within their local areas.” Jonathan Reid, Belfast City BMX Club, one of the winning clubs from last year’s Little Stars scheme, said: “The Little Wings bursary helped our own “little wing nuts” receive BMX specific training equipment, which was invaluable over the winter months. We were able to practise our technique through the winter, and came out at the start of the season ready to race.” To apply for the Little Wing Little Stars bursary scheme, children’s clubs simply need to submit a 300-word entry or create a two-minute video, explaining why they need the bursary and what it will be used for, along with the location of the club’s nearest Little Wing restaurant. Entries should be emailed to bursaries@littlewingpizzeria.co.uk, before the closing date of Monday 19 November. For full terms and conditions please visit: http://www.littlewingpizzeria.com/kids Little Wing is part of the Beannchor Group, Ireland’s largest hospitality group, which boasts a portfolio of over 50 pubs, hotels and restaurants across Northern Ireland.

KIDS COMPETITION WINNERS! Eric Mercer Opticians are delighted to announce joint winners for their kids’ poster competition. It’s Rebekah Taylor, 13 and her brother Ethan, 7! Eric says, “Rebekah and Ethan have done a fantastic job. They put a lot of time and imagination into their pictures and really impressed us with their eye-catching designs. The idea behind the competition was to highlight the importance of children’s eye tests and Rebekah and Ethan have achieved that really well.”
Eye tests for kids “Poor vision can have a very damaging effect on a child’s ability to learn,” Eric explains, “but research shows that as many as one in five children go to school with un-diagnosed problems like lazy eye. Part of the problem is that children often don’t realize they have a sight defect. Also, there may be no obvious signs for parents and teachers to pick up on. That’s why it’s so important for children to have regular eye tests, so problems can be discovered and treated in good time”.
Fabulous poster Rebekah and Ethan’s pictures have been made into a fabulous poster at Eric’s practice on the Woodstock Road. And keep a look out for it in this month’s issue of Bloom.
Fantastic prizes As a big thank you, Rebekah and Ethan called in last month with their family to pick up their fantastic prizes - £30 worth of Amazon vouchers each! Well done to both of them and keep drawing! Eric can be contacted at his practice: 448 Woodstock Road, Belfast, BT6 9DR. Tel: 028 9058 3030. Transfer test season is upon us and we have called on Relax kids for some tips on how best to prepare. Relax Kids Exam Calm Tips Stress can negatively affect children’s performance in tests. When children are nervous, it can cloud their focus, affect their memory recall and comprehension, and induce dreaded “brain-block”!
Eat a good breakfast. Avoid sugary foods and refined carbohydrates like white bread! These might make your blood sugar levels spike and stop you from being able to concentrate properly. If your tests are in the afternoon make sure you bring a healthy snack to keep you full and ener-gised Eat brain food. Certain foods have been proven to help your brain work more efficiently. For example, blueberries can help improve your memory. Add some to your breakfast cereal to help you remember all the hard work and revision you have done.
These Relax Kids Exam tips will help your child learn how to beat exam stress Before School: On the day of your first Exam test you might be feeling a little nervous. As night becomes longer than day I’m fully embracing autumn and enjoying filling the darker nights with theatre, live music and other entertaining events. Attending the launch of Freckle Magazine launched the season of this dark night entertainment for me. Held in the Butcher’s Building, found at the Smithfield area of the city, contributors, subscribers and readers were invited to celebrate issue 7 and enjoy the contribution from 3 of its creatives. We had the beautiful poem Umbels recited to us by Emma Must, Paul McVeigh, author of award winning novel The Good Son, read his endearing short story and Geralyn Mulqueen gave us an insight into her article on her journey to creating art. I highly recommend you pick up a copy and you can read more about the launch venue at buildingblocksbelfast.com Since then my nights have been filled with live music in the Empire Music Hall, theatrical performances at the Lyric Theatre, opera at the Grand Opera House and dance performances at The Mac. Events to check out include The Man Who Fell to Pieces at the Crescent Arts Centre, Date Show at Bullitt Hotel and Infinity Farm’s monthly workshops at Vault Studios – October’s is lip balm & body butter made from beeswax and honey. There’s plenty on the big screen too with the QFT celebrating 50 years of independent cinema after its recent refurbishment. A month long programme of new films, old classics and special events includes First Man with Ryan Gosling, Monty Python’s Life of Brian and a movie all-nighter! www.LyndsayMalone.com

Join the street party of food, crafts, art, live music, street performers and demonstrations on Thursday 26th October 7pm to 9pm.

Based at the Active Travel Hub in C.S. Lewis Square, the Sustrans team have planned a range of activities over the next few months to promote active travel.
Keep ‘er lit and get active with Sustrans this autumn The darker days of autumn doesn’t mean you have to put away your bike, with a little help from walking and cycling charity Sustrans you can ‘Keep ‘er Lit’ for longer! Sustrans ‘Keep ‘er Lit’ campaign this October will see a series of events both in the community and workplaces to encourage cyclists to stay safe by using lights and reflective gear so they can continue into the darker days. Sustrans will be partnering with the PSNI and Kinning Cycles, among others, to offer advice, free lights and other reflective goodies. The campaign will culminate at the end of the month with a Hallow E’en Twilight cycle along east Belfast’s fantastic traffic-free greenways. Check our website (www.sustrans.org.uk/chips) and social media for more details. Dianne Whyte, Sustrans Active Travel Officer said: “We have a packed programme of events in October that will encourage everyone to ‘light up’ their bikes and stay cycling.” The EU-funded CHIPS project, delivered by Sustrans, encourages commuters in east Belfast to try alternatives to the car such as public transport, cycling and walking in order to tackle air pollution.
The project will also be tackling the topical issue of encouraging more women to get on their bikes. Did you know that 80% of women in Belfast never cycle? Sustrans is launching a ‘Women into Cycling’ six-week programme this autumn aimed at female commuters in the east Belfast area. The programme will deal with the barriers to women cycling and offer on-road cycle training and bike maintenance skills. There will be group cycle rides, route planning and tips on choosing a bike and equipment, including lights, locks, panniers and clothing. A special debate about women and cycling will be held ahead of the programme focusing on the issues highlighted by Sustrans’ Bike Life: Women reducing the Gender Gap report. Go to www.sustrans.org.uk/bikelifebelfast for more details. Sustrans is particularly keen to support any commuters or workplaces in the east Belfast area to travel actively either on foot or by bike. To this end, the project is developing ‘Personal Challenges’ including a ‘Couch to Cycle’ programme to enable those who don’t think they are fit enough to try cycling. To find out more about these bespoke courses contact Pamela Grove-White at the Active Travel Hub on 028 90738513 or email pamela.grovewhite@sustrans.org.uk For all information about the CHIPS project go to www.sustrans.org.uk/chips

Key trends for AW18
With autumn well and truly here, I thought I’d take a look at three of this season’s key interior trends that you can work into your existing home decor with just a few simple tweaks. Woodland Retreat With the objective of creating a super cosy abode this autumn/winter, this trend is centred around a perfect blend of textured materials, such as linens, chunky knits and rustic wood, in a rich palette of plum, russet and smokey grey. Woodland animals also feature heavily across soft furnishings, lighting and accessories, especially the humble hare, with quirky, decorative lamps and bedlinen featuring this beloved woodland creature. How to nail it? Bring nature inside with dried seed heads and branches arranged in vases and introduce cushions and throws featuring woodland motifs, chunky knits and woven fabrics in warm, earthy tones. Modern Nordic The Scandi trend has been around for a few years now, but doesn’t show signs of going anywhere soon. It’s a popular look that has evolved with each season, so this year, look out for pieces in soft, grown up pastels, with elements of bleached wood, buff leather and a global influence across accessories. Follow my blog at www.dekkobird.com |
Dekko Bird
Pale woods and a soft tonal palette of lavender, sage and blush will really pop against dark painted walls that have gained popularity over the past couple of years. The Modern Nordic trend is all about laid back, effortlessly stylish decor, designed to soften and brighten your home in the dark winter months. How to nail it? Update your existing low-key Scandi decor with a Moroccan leather pouffe, Ikat print textiles and plenty of tassels and pompoms! Luxe Revival Bring in a subtly decadent feel to your interior this winter, with fabrics, furniture and accessories in affordable yet luxurious materials, such as marble, brass and velvet. Keep the overall effect relaxed with minimalist lighting and soft, linear designs, reminiscent of the Art Deco style of the ‘30s. Key pieces include elegant velvet upholstered dining chairs in blush, teal or ochre, glassware with gold/brass detailing and a statement, decorative rug as a focal point. How to nail it? The drinks trolley is a key element of this look, so invest in this fun accessory for your seasonal entertaining this year, as staying in continues to be the new going out!
