Old School Friends Reunited For Charity Two friends who met at high school have taken on a marathon challenge to raise money for Cancer Focus NI. Lyndsay Mairs and Carol McAdam met at Grosvenor Grammar School in 1989. Carol is running the 2016 Boston Marathon on Monday 18th April and Lyndsay is running the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 24th April, both Marathons are part of the World Majors. Lyndsay, mother of 2 is used to being on her feet all day but when she gets home from work there is no rest as she trains for her first Marathon. Her training buddy Carol, has ran 9 marathons and between them they are hoping to raise at least £6,000. Lyndsay said “I ran the Belfast Half Marathon and so decided to try the London Marathon, the challenge is going to be the distance. I will be pleased to finish in 5 hours, anything less will be a bonus”. This will be the 3rd Marathon that Carol has ran in aid of Cancer Focus NI, the previous 2 being London. “It is my 9th Marathon and I am overwhelmed to have the privilege to be running one of the most famous marathons in the world. I am aiming for a PB of 3:20 but at the end of the day it is the taking part that counts” If you would like to donate and help support Northern Irelands leading Cancer Charity please visit: www.justgiving.com/Lyndsay-Mairs | www.justgiving.com/Carol-McAdam2

Greenwood Primary School Are Doing Themselves Proud For Sport Relief On Wednesday 16th March, Greenwood Primary School from Belfast raised some serious cash for Sport Relief at its Sponsored Mile and Flash Mob Dance event! Greenwood Primary School students took part in the Sport Relief Mile throughout the week of Sport Relief. The school aimed to raise as much money as possible for Sport Relief and finished with a grand finale of a whole school flash mob dance in the school playground. Claire Ashe, Charity Co-ordinator & Class Teacher, said: “Students and teachers at Greenwood Primary School love taking part in Sport Relief. It’s an excellent way to bring staff, students and the community together to get active, have fun and raise money for a great cause!” The money pupils raise this Sport Relief, will help to change lives forever. That’s because Comic Relief spends the money raised by the public to give extremely vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Belfast, the UK and throughout the world a helping hand to turn their lives around. Those schools that haven’t already signed up can still get involved in Sport Relief 2016. As always, schools can organise a Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Friday 18th March, but there are lots of other ways to join the fun and games too. The free School Fundraising Event Pack contains exclusive materials to help organise events.

Spring in the air in Orangefield Park With the improvement in the weather and the first of the spring flowers in bloom, colleagues from Tesco Castlereagh Road and local residents held a litter pick in Orangefield Park on Sunday 21st February. The event was organised by the Greenway project. Before setting off with bags and litter-picking sticks, the team was advised about safety and hazards by a local Paramedic. Although the weather was a bit wet that don't dampen the spirits of the team who walked through the wooded areas as well as the open lawns, tidying as they went. Much laughter and interesting conversations happened over the two hours during which the aim of improving life for all the residents of the Orangefield and wider area. Our thanks are given to the staff of the City Council for proving refreshments.
Ashfield Girls Use Filmmaking To Focus On Mental Health Awareness 4 pupils from Ashfield Girls’ High School, along with pupils from 6 other Belfast schools, have produced two short films under the guidance of Cinemagic, as the culmination of an innovative project about mental health and wellbeing sponsored by George Best Belfast City Airport and supported by Arts & Business Northern Ireland. The pupils were set the challenge to create the films from script to screen in three days after a series of pre-production workshops hosted by professionals from NIAMH (The Northern Ireland Association for Mental Health) and Cinemagic filmmakers. The young people took ownership of the film productions from idea generation and scriptwriting, to casting and directing. The films examine the stigma of mental health versus physical health and the effects of bully and peer pressure with the overall theme of ‘Don’t be afraid to talk about mental health’. Cinemagic Chief Executive, Joan Burney Keatings MBE said “We are very proud of all of the talented young people that participated in this important project. The aim of initiative was to work with a group of teenagers from different schools across Belfast using the medium of film to focus on raising awareness of mental health and wellbeing. With support from George Best Belfast City Airport and Arts & Business Northern Ireland’s Investment programme, we were able to offer this creative opportunity, developing communication skills, teamwork skills and filmmaking skills”. The films will be screened for the schools and all those involved later this year and during the 2016 Cinemagic Belfast International Film and Television Festival for Young People in October.

Local cat lovers want to raise cash for the kitty! Local cat lovers Rosemary Gamble and Colin Bryans are doing a sponsored zip-line across the River Lagan in Belfast on Sunday 17th April 2016 to raise funds for Cats Protection’s Belfast Adoption Centre. Rosemary is a volunteer Cat Carer with Cats Protection, while Colin works for the Belfast Adoption Centre as a Cat Care Assistant. The daring duo are hurtling across the River Lagan to help the Belfast Adoption Centre look after over 100 unwanted felines in desperate need of new homes. The plucky pair are due to zip across the River Lagan in Belfast just after 1pm on Sunday 17th April 2016 and supporters are very welcome to come along to spectate from the Lagan Weir bridge and cheer them along. Rosemary said: “I decided to raise money for the Belfast Adoption Centre because they work tirelessly to help cats in the area and as a cat lover; I think this is a really worthwhile cause so I’d be grateful if people could sponsor me”. Belfast Adoption Centre Manager Bel Livingstone said: “We are a very busy centre that finds loving homes for up to 500 unwanted cats and kittens every year. However, we are in constant need of funds so that we can continue, and hopefully expand, our cat care work, so I’d urge people to sponsor Rosemary and Colin in their fearless feat!” “Our centre is currently in desperate need of funds to provide the homeless cats in our care with food, shelter and essential veterinary care, so any money raised will help pay for this.” “We are really grateful that Rosemary and Colin are taking on this challenge on our behalf. If we didn’t receive such wonderful support from our local community, so many more cats would needlessly remain homeless.” For advice about caring for a cat, or to offer a cat a home, please contact the Belfast Adoption Centre on 028 9048 0202 or belfast@cats.org.uk

Students inspired by I.T workshops delivered by IT3Sixty Pupils from Campbell College Belfast took part in an I.T workshop as part of the Bring IT On programme delivered by IT3Sixty in conjunction with the Department for Employment and Learning and Belfast Metropolitan College. The multi-faceted initiative includes direct outreach into schools, with more than 5000 students in 150 schools hearing a tech careers presentation or taking part in an employability workshop. Nearly three quarters of those who attend the careers presentation say they are more likely to take up a career in IT as a result. Indeed applications for computing-related degrees in Northern Ireland have increased by more than 90% over the last seven years, demonstrating the impact of programmes such as Bring IT On. To build on its success and reach a younger audience, Bring IT On has now been joined by Junior Bring IT On, designed for 8 – 12 year olds. On the website, would-be tech wizards can practise being cyber detectives in an online game; take their first steps in web design; and learn about the world of tech though quizzes and competitions. At the same time a programme of Cyber Security Workshops has been going out to junior schools: more than 500 10 – 11 year olds have found out about staying safe online, beating cyber-bullying, and a day in the life of a cyber-professional. For more information on Bring IT On events and activities to inspire young people about the digital industry go to www.juniorbio.com or emailenda@it3sixty.com

Warren York Hypnotherapy A STEPPING STONE TO THE LIFE YOU WANT
The first thing people ask me about hypnotherapy is – does it work?
issues and most can be solved completely or at least greatly improved.
I can understand that question as it was mine before I trained as a hypnotherapist. I studied psychology at university and was a bit sceptical.
What’s the strangest phobia you’ve ever treated comes about third.
On my first day training I was hypnotised 10 times and hypnotised 10 other people! I gave up smoking that first day too. I know it works.
The second question people ask is - what can it do for me? Any habit, behaviour or mindset can be changed as long as the individual wants it to change. From smoking to weight loss, anxiety and stress, fears and phobias to IBS and sports improvement. I’ve worked with all those things and many more. People come to me with a wide range of
I’ve had every fear from spiders and flying to going outside and even a fear of buttons. People always feel embarrassed of their issue. I can understand that but I know there is always a reason for the fear and we can get to the bottom of it and solve it in a few sessions. Is hypnosis like on the TV or in films and will I lose control? It’s a big concern for many people. Clinical hypnotherapy isn’t the same as hypnosis for entertainment. You can’t be made to do anything against your will and I’m there to help. You’re completely in control at all times and aware of what’s going on but you’re in more of a
focused state. The trance state is natural. We go into trances every day watching TV or reading when we’re oblivious to what’s going on around us. Even when driving a car we can reach our destination safely without being aware of the journey! By tapping into these trance states in a hypnotherapy session, we can be more open to positive change. Our unconscious mind is so powerful and hypnotherapy is an amazing tool to help us all make deep and lasting changes. Before trying hypnotherapy, do a bit of research and make sure your hypnotherapist is trained, qualified and registered with a governing body.
Why not enquire and find out what hypnotherapy can do for you!

URhairExpert Anti-Ageing Hair Care Unfortunately, ageing is inevitable, and goes without saying for hair too, causing it to become brittle and lose density and colour. Just like anti-aging skin care, there are lots ways to keep your mature locks looking as young as you feel. Although unlike skin, hair does not regenerate itself so it is vitally important to look after every inch of it, from root to tip. Hair Care: A good hair care routine is crucial to promote healthy younger looking hair. Over the year’s hair becomes drier and thinner, so using a moisturising and volumising shampoo and conditioner will help keep hair hydrated while encouraging root lift. Strengthening products will help to prevent breakage and strengthen weak hair from within. Hair thickening treatments will give you an overall feeling of denser hair and stimulate the scalp and blood flow to boost new hair growth. Colour: Getting hair colour right as you age is a must! Too light and it can emphasise lines and wrinkles, too dark and it can emphasise age spots and dark circles. If you are blonde, it is essential that your hair colour is the correct tone for your skin and eyes. Add lighter and darker pieces to create thickness and texture. If you are dark, ensure that your hair colour is multi-tonal, this will create a more natural look, preventing a mask effect. Add lighter pieces around the face and scattered through your parting to camouflage unwanted greys.
UrbanrootsBallyhackamore
Pamela Robinson
Owner & Creative Director For colouring mature hair, I recommend L’OREAL INOA SUPREME. ‘It is the first ammonia free permanent anti-ageing hair dye to safely cover grey hair, and giving an overall more youthful look. The colour, which is enriched with oil, leaves beautiful, age-defying colour that’s bright and looks natural. The technology balances the combination of shades perfectly to complement aging skin tones. Plus, the colour helps provide texture to hair for a fuller look. INOA Supreme leaves hair feeling conditioned with sublime colour radiance until your next colour appointment. Experience L’Oréal’s ultimate in luxury colour, at Urbanroots, with improved comfort during the development time and no odour. So you can sit back and enjoy!’ Style: If you unsure about colour and opt for the natural look, which I am I huge fan off, it is important that your haircut is right for you. This doesn’t necessarily mean short! Work with your stylist to create a cut that will suit your face shape and lifestyle. A soft and textured look will give the hair movement and volume, which can help lift the face and promote youth. Maintaining your hair shape I recommend a cut every 4-6 weeks. Doing this will prevent split ends, keeping hair in great condition promoting healthy hair. I try to encourage my clients to change up their parting or style their hair with loose waves at home as this can instantly create volume. Always use heat protecting products to prevent damaging your hair and premature ageing.

Easy DIY Updates for a Spring Refresh
Spring is the time of year when we look to freshening up our homes, but bringing about a new look needn't be costly nor time consuming.
There are so many imaginative ways you can add personality and style to your decor, but here are some of my favourite ideas; these are simple, cheap, yet really effective mini projects for you to try over the coming weeks, guaranteed to give your home interior just the little lift it needs around now. These ideas will fit into any decor style, so set aside some time and get creative! If you haven't tried chalk paint, now is the time to do so. It requires no prepping or sanding, just a couple of coats of paint in whatever colour you choose to totally transform anything from old pine chairs and desks to picture frames and mirrors. You can pick up Annie Sloan chalk paint and advice on using it from Doris & Jeannie on Belmont Road (t: 028 9543 8177). If your garden shed or wooden patio set needs a facelift, Cuprinol have launched a beautiful new range called Garden Shades (£12.37/L, available at B&Q Holywood Exchange), which is so easy to apply. Try Willow, Muted Grey (pictured) or Pale Jasmine. Spring is a traditional time to clear out and clean up, so why not update your storage solutions while you’re at it? Spray old metal baskets or containers in
copper metallic paint for an instant modern, designer look (try Plasti-Kote metallic spray paint), or dip tired woven baskets into white paint and use to store bathroom essentials or as a stylish plant holder. Create easily changeable areas of focal interest in your home with displays of pictures, photos, trinkets, ceramics or mini succulents set onto Ikea ‘Mosslanda’ picture ledges. These slimline shelves look great above a bed (see picture) or desk, in a bathroom or to house books on open wall space in the home where storage space is at a premium (From £4.50, Ikea). Why not paint them to complement your existing decor, too? Another cheap and fantastic way to decorate a wall area is with the use of clipboards, covered in wallpaper, blackboard paint or even strips of washi tape, with photos, postcards, memos or calendars attached and hung up in a group for a really cool display (see picture). Again, these can be changed about when a refresh is needed. If you need further inspiration or advice, contact me via the blog dekkobird.com or check out Pinterest and its many how-to tutorials for some of these projects. Good luck!

EXPERT
DENTAL EXCELLENCE
Want your Teeth back? Local expert Dr. Chris McHale BDS, one of the leading cosmetic and implant dentists in the UK and Ireland Talks about dental implants. Dental Implants have proven to be the answer to many patients’ dental problems both functional and aesthetic. By replacing just one tooth to a full mouth reconstruction, they enable the restoration of a natural smile, improving patient comfort, confidence and quality of life.
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is gently placed directly into the jaw to act as an anchor to support one or more teeth or a denture. Each implant can usually be used to support up to two teeth. One major advantage of an implant is that it avoids the need to drill down the teeth either side of the “gap” which would normally be necessary in preparation of a conventional bridge. The implant also provides a stimulus to the underlying bone reducing further bone loss. Implants can also be used as anchors to improve the stability and retention of loose dentures. Patients find great improvements during speech and eating, increased comfort and renewed confidence. At Dental Excellence Belmont Road we can often remove the failing tooth and fit a dental implant at the same appointment.
What does the treatment involve?
Placing of the implants is carried out at the surgery. It involves a simple procedure which is carried out under a normal local anaesthetic. The implant must then be allowed to bond (integrate) with the bone. During this time it is possible to make a temporary replacement for your missing teeth. Once healing and integration have occurred the permanent replacement is made and fitted.
Planning your treatment
At Dental Excellence we use state of the art techniques to measure the amount of bone available for the placement of implants. The implant team uses pre-surgical imaging with a state of the art 3d scanner to indicate the following: • • • •
Where each implant should go How long and wide it should be At what angle it should be inserted Whether the bone quality (e.g. its density) is sufficient • Where the sensitive anatomy is located
Who can have implants?
Dr McHale will carry out a thorough examination including appropriate x-rays, to see if your case is suitable. It can be dependent on the condition of the bone in the area of the planned implants but in most cases a solution is found.
How successful is the treatment?
Modern implants show a success rate of 98%+ over 15-20 years. Being rooted in bone, as with your natural teeth, implants require routine cleaning.

EXPERT Joint Pain In the UK alone over 2 million working days are lost due to joint related conditions, such as Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, sports injuries or Gout. This doesn’t surprise me as they are ailments which I am asked about on a daily basis. The pain can cause major issues with our day to day lives. Inflammation - Fire with in our tissues is the body’s way to fight against infection and to deal with joint pain, but inflammation can also run like wild fire out of control and can lead to further inflammatory disorders, so we end up taking anti-inflammatory medication which can have serious side effects. I want tell you a few ways of helping yourself to reduce the level of inflammation through diet, exercise and some natural herbal remedies. Firstly be aware of your body weight, for every 3kg of weight gained 15kg more of pressure is put on the hip and knee joints, so it is essential to exercise. Now, people tell me they can’t exercise because of the pain, but swimming is non weight bearing so is ideal. Gentle yoga or Pilates can also be strengthening. It is proven that people who consume high acid foods can suffer more with joint pain so eliminating things like apples, oranges and pork and cutting down on nightshade foods like tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and aubergines may be of use in reducing

inflammation. Encouraging more oily foods in your diet such as fish, nuts and seeds will help with those achy stiff joints. Some natural products that I recommend regularly with great success are Devils claw for upper neck and back problems. Green lipped muscle has so far shown me the best results in reduction of inflammation in general without any side effects. Turmeric and ginger are great warming stimulating herbs useful for flexibility and overall mobility. Glucosamine and chondroitin are also known as a shock absorber for the joints and are advised to help rebuild cartilage and lubricate the joints. MSM (Methylsulfonyl- methane) is another product worth thinking about when joints are red and swollen.

Spring is teasing us with these clear blue skies, there's a warmth in the sunshine, as long as you don't move outside of its glare, but change is coming and we are all encouraged and motivated by these brighter days. Runners take to the footpaths, friends cycle to meet for quality time, kids set down their electronic devices and move outside as the sun beckons us all to celebrate our ability to move. This priceless experience of being fully present with our physical bodies, to me is a beautiful thing. I am a mum of two energetic boys and wife to my teenage sweetheart. I started on a journey to create a working life for myself that would leave me happy, inspired and available to be with my children as they moved into boyhood. I started a business as a freelance fitness trainer instructing group sessions and specialising in bootcamp style training, I felt grateful to have found a vocation that left me rejuvenated after every working day. In spring 2014, when my second child was 6 months old, I made a connection with Tribal Fitness Bootcamps and owner Nikki
Jarvis. Within weeks i was the excited owner of the Belfast area franchise for this ladies only bootcamp. I have had the most monumental two years. There's something beautiful about being constantly surrounded by fun, adventurous and kind women every day that is food for my soul! At Tribal Fitness Belfast I provide pre and postnatal fitness sessions, which are designed so mum can bring her baby along and in a supported environment work towards strengthening her body and improving her fitness after the changes she has experienced during pregnancy. The classes are friendly and incredibly relaxed. Many of our mums start around 6 weeks postnatal and continue on to my women's only sessions. Some ladies who have been with me since 2014 are extremely fit and in many ways stronger than they've ever been in their lives. I also run a variety of ladies only bootcamps, indoor and outdoor sessions. These are more than just a fitness class; they are a coming together of an unique community of women. Most started as complete strangers to

one another and now consider each other friends and team mates. The sessions are challenging, but they are inclusive of every individual, no matter their fitness ability. We train regardless of the weather, our stresses and struggles. These sessions provide a space for complete mindful rest from what continues on in our personal lives. People experience physical transformations, some find it supports positive mental health, some reverse lifelong health conditions and some just find themselves. This spring, respond to the beckoning sun. If you've had that itch for change take a leap. Don't let fear hold you back. Small steps are all you need to begin with. This is not a sprint, it's most definitely a journey. If you would like to be a part of the Tribe, you can contact Hollie at FB.com/TribalFitnessBelfast OR hollie@tribalfitnessbootcamps.co.uk. Tribal Fitness Bootcamps have sessions throughout the country. To find one closest to you contact www.tribalfitnessbootcamps.co.uk

A Belfast Mum As a harried, often dishevelled, and occasionally desperate mother of two, it has to be said I don't get much time to just mooch around the shops anymore. I've never been one of those women who could spend hours looking at shoes, bags, clothes and accessories, but I used to enjoy the odd trip out to update my wardrobe, and could easily wile away an afternoon in a junk shop or bookshop. However, 'going shopping' now has an entirely new meaning, and it's one that strikes fear into my heart, as my beautiful girls turn into demons the minute they go through the double doors of any supermarket... I'm not exaggerating when I say that I have been close to tears in most of the major supermarkets of East Belfast - tears of frustration, embarrassment, fear and sometimes just plain exhaustion. I've tried all the tricks of the trade: promising rewards at the checkouts if they'll be good on the way round, feeding them carefully selected snacks as they sit in the trolley, giving my elder daughter little tasks to do to keep her occupied... Nothing seems to work. Before the last thing on the list has been crossed off, one or both of them will do something that makes me feel like a bad mother who can't control her kids.
But by far our most horrendous moment whilst shopping occurred earlier this year. Distracted by the little one trying to climb out of the trolley seat, I turned my back on the four year old. And she disappeared. Never have I known such fear and panic. I scoured the aisles for a few minutes before an announcement over the tannoy asked for me by name to come to customer services, where my little girl was standing wobbly of lip, having told a staff member her name, my name and where she lived. The relief was huge, and as I hugged her close, I realised that I'd rather have her misbehaving beside me than behaving herself with someone else. So for now, I'll endure the weekly hell that is the grocery shop. Or I'll take my husband's advice, and start shopping online.
My eldest has had to be stopped from climbing into the freezers on a number of occasions. She's also spent some visits crawling along the floor underneath the trolley, despite being perfectly able to walk, and forced me to buy a lot more carrots than I actually needed after she licked about 6 of them in the fresh veg section. The little one usually goes into meltdown about two thirds of the way round, either because I've run out of snacks for her, or because she's seen something in the trolley that she absolutely MUST EAT NOW. Then there's the constant requests for items we definitely don't need that are far too full of sugar or fat for little girls, and the subsequent tantrums when I refuse to buy them.

THE PROPERTY BLOOM JAMES DUGGAN ESTATE AGENTS
A SPRING in the step for first time buyers Units set to come to market as significant refurbishment gathers pace Spring is in the air and that should be a good thing for first time buyers. The first quarter of 2016 saw the lower end of the housing market in East Belfast dominated by investors and buy to let landlords trying to beat the new stamp duty laws being introduced in April 2016. This in turn made it difficult for first time buyers to compete. Now that the new laws in relation to stamp duty have came into effect, we at James Duggan Estates believe that we will see a slight slowing down on the investor market which will ultimately allow a bit more freedom for first time buyers competing in that market. So if you are a first time buyer and have found yourself a bit frustrated over the last couple of months stick with it as now is the time to buy. If you are unsure of your options, why not give our office a call on (028)90 925050 where one of our friendly and experienced staff would be more than happy to help you. We offer everything under the one roof to make your house buying process as simple and stress free as possible. Our services include sales, lettings, property management, free independent mortgage advice and a recommended panel of solicitors.
Quarter 1 of 2016 sees record sales
The first quarter of 2016 has been a record month for our company with our best quarter in our 3 years on the Bloomfield Road. REMBERING DAVID BOWIE I like many people was sad to hear of David Bowie's recent passing. A definite loss of a great talent. I am reading quite a bit of many tributes planned to mark the life of such a great and influential talent. On a local level, the Strand Arts Centre will be showing his 1986 film 'Labyrinth' on Thursday 14 April. Directed by Jim Henson of Muppets fame, the story centres around a young girl who wishes her little brother would be taken away by goblins, only to have her wish come
true when she conjures up a goblin world! She must then rescue her brother by travelling through the labyrinth where amongst other interesting characters she eventually meets 'Jareth' the goblin king - enter David Bowie!
However, be warned that you may start a lifelong love of all things Bowie as it did for many of us back then - no bad thing if you ask me! Enjoy!
The film has a PG certificate so it may be something to take the younger members of the family to see. Plenty of information is available online about the content for you to decide for yourself if it is suitable.
So, a certain head honcho at 'Bloom' made the intrepid crossover into a new age bracket when apparently life begins! So a night out in town is duly arranged - that's right TOWN, over the bridge, across the river, away from the comfort and loveliness of our wee Ballyhackamore/Belmont hub! First thought, what to wear? So after much deliberation we decided that maybe a dress was in order for such a special occasion! Cue my opportunity to wear a dress I picked up in Marks & Spencer final clearance sale for 99p (yes 99p) a few weeks before! I knew it would come in handy! The full price was £39.50 so grabbed that with both hands! I teamed it with a pair of new boots bought in New Look online which were reduced to £11! Result: full new outfit for £11.99! So, plenty of change for a cocktail to toast the lady's arrival into the 40 club! In the next few months I have a weekend away planned and a summer holiday to look forward to so I am looking around for some bargains for those two occasions for me and the rest of the family! Main source so far is the NEXT clearance option on their website which is always available except when they are having their sale. Really good bargains to be had. My other source is GAP, normally expensive for my taste but since I signed up to their newsletter I am getting discounts codes regularly, so worth doing! Not forgetting the excellent charity shops we have on our doorstep!
So until next|month - happy (bargain) hunting!
