GET READY FOR THE BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH! RSPB Northern Ireland is encouraging local people to start preparing their gardens for the 2016 Big Garden Birdwatch! The world’s largest garden wildlife survey will celebrate its 37th year on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 January. The Big Garden Birdwatch is a chance for everyone to actively help nature by donating just one hour to count the birds and other wildlife in their gardens. The data gathered from this survey provides a vital health-check of the wildlife that we share our homes with. Amy Colvin from RSPB NI said: “It couldn’t be easier to take part in the survey. Pick up a survey leaflet from your local RSPB nature reserve during January or register at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch. “Then make yourself a cuppa, grab a biscuit and spend one hour during the birdwatch weekend counting the visitors to your garden!” Last year almost half a million people across the UK, including more than 12,000 in Northern Ireland, took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch. Of the 127,700 birds counted in NI, house sparrows were the most commonly seen. The Big Garden Birdwatch also asks participants to record other garden wildlife, including hedgehogs and squirrels. As temperatures start to drop, the natural food available for wildlife becomes scarcer and so our feathered and spiky friends are more likely to visit our gardens in the hope of supplementing their diets. Birds need calorie-rich food at this time of year, to help them maintain their fat reserves. Opt for peanuts, sunflower hearts, suet balls, finely chopped bacon rind and even a little bit of grated cheese in your feeders and on bird tables. For a balanced diet, still provide your normal seed mix, as well as these fattier foods. For hedgehogs, it’s best to avoid bread and milk and instead opt for dog or cat food. For more information about Big Garden Birdwatch 2016 visit www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch. Teachers and pupils are also urged to take part in Big Schools’ Birdwatch between 4 January and 12 February. Further information can be found atwww.rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch.

TIME TO FOCUS At Focus Tuition, our new name truly reflects what we do! We focus on what matters – a good grounding in the basics of Maths; before we progress to topics such as decimals, percentages and fractions – which are again taught in full, because the aim is to give your child the solid foundation they need in the next stage of their education. In English, we aim to improve literacy and comprehension skills and give a good grounding in English grammar and punctuation. Again the aim is to give your child a solid foundation and confidence in the use of their own language; or in many cases their second language. We continue to prepare children and teenagers for all the major exams – Transfer and GCSE, A Level, Essential Skills and re-sits. We can also help adults gain these qualifications. So if your New Year’s resolution involves your or your child’s education; give us a call, email, or drop in for chat. For more information about Focus Tuition or to get a FREE assessment, call 028 9046 9662.

PADDY WALLACE FUND FOR AUTISM LAUNCHES IN NORTHERN IRELAND Following the success of his Testimonial dinner last year in support of Autism Ireland, former Ireland and Ulster rugby star Paddy Wallace and his wife Tina have stepped up their efforts to help local children and families by launching their own Fund for Autism. The Paddy Wallace Fund for Autism aims to raise awareness of autism and support families and children awaiting diagnosis or who have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Paddy and his wife Tina have first-hand experience of the challenges faced by parents, having fought for five years for a proper assessment for their son, Paddy-Jack, now aged 8. Like so many other parents, Paddy and Tina often felt frustrated by the lack of adequate advice and support available to them. The battle to ensure their son had all of the support he needed left them determined to ensure others wouldn’t have to face the same barriers and frustrations. “Nobody should have to experience the delay and obstacles our family faced to secure a diagnosis and management plan for PJ,” said Paddy. “Just to see the right people and obtain a diagnosis was a challenge, and we saw the clear need for a better support system for the many families in the same situation.” With over 300 children being diagnosed with ASD in Northern Ireland each year, Paddy has decided to put his public profile to good use by raising awareness of autism and challenging the stigma attached to it. The Paddy Wallace Testimonial dinner in 2014, attended by over 540 guests, including celebrities from across the UK and Ireland and former rugby teammates, was an outstanding success and raised much needed funds for Autism Ireland. This money will be used to fund a health and activity programme called Project Oaks ran by Autism Initiatives in Northern Ireland during 2016 and 2017. Through partnerships with charities and educational facilities, The Paddy Wallace Fund for Autism has already identified several key projects. Firstly, working with local charity Autism Initiatives, the fund will support an advice line for pre and post diagnosis, for both parents and educational facilities to avail of. In addition the fund will support various social activities, such as cycling and surf programmes, support adults in supported housing and the introduction of the “Buddy Bench” scheme, which they hope to deliver to schools across Northern Ireland.

For further information on the Paddy Wallace Fund for Autism, please visit www.paddywallace.com or contact Tina@paddywallace.com

EAST BELFAST WOMAN SHARES SURVIVAL STORY TO HELP SAVE LIVES Local woman, Wendy Cunningham, has shared her personal experience of the day her life changed forever in a new video produced to back a local defibrillator fundraising campaign. Wendy Cunningham (42) from East Belfast is backing the Henderson Group’s Heart of our Community campaign, which will see the installation of over 300 public-access defibrillators outside SPAR, EUROSPAR and VIVO stores in Northern Ireland. SPAR NI will release a teaser of Wendy’s video on their Facebook page on Thursday 17th December, and will release the full video on Friday 18th. Wendy suffered a cardiac arrest while she was enjoying swimming with her club at the Templemore Baths, and in the video she talks about her passion for life now that she fully understands just how precious it is. Wendy, who had almost decided not to go to swimming on the evening of the 24th September 2012, suffered her cardiac arrest just as she got out of the water after “a voice told me to get out of the pool.” Thankfully she did so, and her fellow club member, friend and nurse along with the trainer at the pool, were able to perform CPR and use a defibrillator over a period of 20 minutes, not giving up until Wendy’s heart started beating again. In the video, Wendy explains how she was in a coma for three days but her experience has done anything but hinder her passion for swimming and for life. The videos, commissioned by the Henderson Group for the Heart of our Community campaign, hope to give one final push to the fundraising campaign that has been running for almost three months now. Bronagh Luke from the Group explains; “When we launched our campaign back in October, we received an incredible response from the public who are passionate about getting 24/7 public access defibrillators into their communities. Our retailers have been fundraising with their staff and customers and are very close to their targets. This means that in 2016, we will see the installation of hundreds of new, state of the art, public access and potentially life-saving defibrillators in rural and urban areas across Northern Ireland. “We are so grateful to Wendy for trusting us to tell her story. She is a remarkable woman, and the courage of those who saved her only goes to show how important it is for the public to learn life-saving CPR skills, and not to be put-off using a defibrillator. The videos are part of our information campaign that is running alongside the fundraising, which has been communicating the importance of the public learning CPR and simple life saving skills, as well as what to do should somebody witness an out of hospital cardiac arrest. “We hope the public watch these videos and are inspired by the experiences shared, and help us to ensure life-saving devices are available for all communities in the country.” The videos can be viewed on the SPAR NI and EUROSPAR NI Facebook Pages, SPAR Northern Ireland You Tube channel and the dedicated campaign website, www.heartofourcommunity.com.

Stop Smoking It’s that time of year again when everyone is making resolutions and thinking of fresh starts! If you are a smoker perhaps the fact that you are reading this article is a sign that you are ready to quit! Smoking is the primary cause of preventable illness and premature death, accounting for approximately 100,000 deaths a year in the United Kingdom. Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the United Kingdom and smoking accounts for 80% of cases. If you are a smoker you are twice as likely to have a heart attack than a non-smoker. For every death caused by smoking approximately 20 smokers are suffering from a smoking related disease. These include chronic bronchitis, emphysema, gum disease and macular degeneration. The health benefits from quitting are noticeable immediately. Within 20 minutes your blood pressure and heart rate will reduce, after 48 hours your sense of smell and taste will improve, and after 72 hours your energy levels will be increased. After 8 hours your blood oxygen levels will return to normal and after 24 hours carbon monoxide will be cleared from your body. It can take between 3 to 9 months for the cough, shortness of breath and wheezing to improve

but during this time you will see a steady increase in your fitness levels. Then there are the long term benefits to consider. Five years after stopping your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker and the longer you have stopped the more you reduce your risk of lung cancer. As well as the many health benefits the financial rewards can be a great incentive. On average smoking 20 cigarettes a day costs around £9.60. This is around £67 a week or £270 a month! Just think what you could do with all that extra money! It’s important that you’re prepared for quitting to be hard work. Nicotine is recognized as being more addictive than cocaine. If you decide to quit without help day 3 is often the worst as all of the nicotine is out of the body and your initial motivation can wane. However, if you are prepared for this and have support in place once you are past this point the physical withdrawal symptoms will ease. Many people complain that coughing may initially worsen; this is normal and will improve after a couple of weeks. There is lots of help available for those who feel they may need it. Many pharmacies operate a smoking cessation scheme

17-19 Belmont Road Belfast BT4 2AA Telephone: 028 9065 7853

whereby the pharmacist will discuss your smoking habits with you. As well as discussing why you want to stop, giving you lots of practical and motivational advice we can recommend a suitable nicotine replacement product. This is a 12 week programme and is available free of charge. Nicotine replacement therapies include patches, gum, inhalators and nasal sprays. The patches deliver a steady amount of nicotine over a period of 16 or 24 hours, and are recommended if you have a regular smoking pattern. If you only smoke at certain times of the day, or perhaps not every day, then the gum can be very helpful. The nicotine is present in the blood after 5-7 minutes and at its peak after 30 minutes of chewing. If you smoke 20 cigarettes or less and find that it’s the hand to mouth action of smoking that you miss, then the inhalators can be useful. No one can tell you to quit, it has to be your decision! However, if you are ready to stop call into Dundela Pharmacy and ask about our smoking cessation scheme.

How to find a good driving instructor in the Belfast area

So you have decided it is time to learn how to drive. Whether you want to drive a manual or automatic car there are many things to consider when making this important decision. The best place to start asking about driving instructors is with your family and friends. Also, determine if the instructor specializes in manual or automatic gear.

Steps to finding a good driving school/instructor: 1

Check to make sure that the instructor is fully qualified.

6

Get realistic quotes so you know the total you will pay beforehand.

2

Get two or more references if possible.

7

3

Ask how long they have been in business.

Ask if they offer an individual pick up and drop off service.

4

Look around before committing to make sure they are not totally ripping you off.

8

Check what their pass rate is.

9

5

Find out how old their cars are.

Do they have an on line presence (website/social media)? If they do check out their reviews. the more reviews the better. Talk to friends that have used them.

Some good questions to ask: Are they courteous and patient? This is a very important consideration. The entire experience, from beginning to end, needs to be as stress free as possible.

When making contact speak to them on the phone or face to face, this will allow you to form an initial opinion, remember you will have to sit next to this person for 1-2 hours during lessons.

Things to Look for in a Good Instructor: There are a number of qualities which can set a professional instructor apart.

Qualification -- Be sure that the prospective instructor you are considering is fully qualified. Your selected instructor should be able to tell you if they are registered and what certificates they hold. A driving instructor must be registered in the Driving Standards Agency, and display an ADI identification certificate. Professional and Friendly Approach – Remember to ask your friends and family for references. Pass rates – A good Driving School/Instructor should have a good pass rate.

Booking Driving Lessons: Give the potential instructor as much information as possible to help him/her find a suitable slot in their diary that suits you both. Such as school – start finish times – free periods -Work detail, location start finish times, do you have flexi hours, how long is you lunch and so on. A New Year

a New You!

2

3

Many people start to think of getting fit and losing weight at this time of year.

6

Running is a great way to do this. At PhysioWorksNI we are seeing more and more clients who have taken up running and have had to stop due to injury.

4

5

Here are a few simple tips to help stay injury free and help towards becoming a better runner. If starting to run for the first time build up slowly, taking rest days between running days. The 10% rule is a good rule to follow – increase your weekly mileage by no more than 10%. (Fig. 1)

Working on your core strength is very good for runners – a better core helps to prevent injury and can make you a better runner. (Fig. 4)

Try to run on grass as much as possible – easier on the joints.

Strengthen legs and hips – prevents a lot of calf and foot problems.

Stretch regularly especially after your run. (Fig. 2)

Massage. This can be self massage with a roller or a spiky/tennis ball or go to a good Sports Physiotherapist who specialises in massage and sports injuries. (Fig. 5)

Remember to warm up by running slowly and gently stretch areas of the body that might feel tight or stiff. A few running drills like high knees or heel kicks can also be useful. Listen to your body – if a joint or a muscle feels sore and gets worse as you run take a few days rest. If the pain does not settle get some advice from your local Physiotherapist. (Fig. 3)

Invest in good footwear. Drink more water if you are exercising and eat well. Plenty of fruit and veg and add more protein into your diet along with carbohydrates. (Fig. 6)

PhysioWorksNI is a leading Physiotherapy, Sports Injury and Pilates Centre in Gilnahirk. We combine the expertise of Physiotherapists, Pilates teachers and Podiatry to help ease pain, recover from injury and help you maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

Sue Crothers shares her story on the success of the FindOut Weight Loss Programme

I am 45 years old and have struggled with weight issues since I was a child.

Sue & Deirdre at the FindOut Weight Loss Programme.

Five years ago I joined a weight loss group and was successful in losing almost 6 stone. Although I remained true to the programme, I had reached a plateau and was struggling to lose any more weight.

SOME QUESTIONS FOR

SUE CROTHERS What inspired you to join the FindOut Weight Loss Programme? I needed to rethink my strategy and when I saw the FindOut Weight Loss Programme advertised I went along to the workshop. The concept really appealed to me as it was educational and motivational, it focused on nutrition, the psychology behind eating and movement. What has been the biggest benefit to you? The most significant benefit to me is that I completely changed the way that I think about food. It also helped me to realise the importance of including all of the food groups in my diet and that I need to balance my calorie intake against the calories that I burn off through exercise and activity.

How specifically has it changed you? As a result of attending the FindOut Weight Loss Programme, I have become more active and more focused on nutrition. I now understand that weight is not the only indicator of health and that eating a balanced, varied diet and including moderate daily exercise is the most sustainable way to maintain a healthy lifestyle. What challenges did you meet along the way & how did you overcome them? As someone who has always disliked exercise it has been difficult to make this transition. I am now more active in my daily activity and include regular exercise where ever possible. During the 10 week programme I used a Fitbit to record my food intake, sleep and daily activity. I have since bought a Fitbit and have found this helpful in setting and meeting daily activity goals. I have seen results and this approach is the best long term solution that I have embarked on for my overall health.

Join us at the free workshops on Monday 11 Jan or Monday 18 Jan to FindOut more.

EXPERT T ime To Cleanse Well I hope all you lovely people had a Fab festive season!! I did but like most of us I drank too much ate too much and totally indulged in all things yummy... Over the next lot of weeks in store I will be dealing with aliments that people don’t realize are connected to over indulgence at Chrimbo. Joint pain and inflammation due to high acid rich diet, Skin complaints like eczema, psoriasis, flaky scalp and even thrush etc. are all most likely due to a high sugar intake. This can also play havoc with our sleep patterns. And most commonly IBS from the over eating in general. Get juicing!! Give the digestive system a break from big heavy meals.

Cut down on alcohol, tea and coffee. (try to drink more water or herbal teas).

Get outside and get some Vit D and also get the blood flowing again after being stuck indoors.

Reduce the sugar that you eat and don’t overdo the fruit as it will turn to sugar in the body also.

A few useful remedies I would recommend over the next month Milk Thistle to help eliminate the toxins from the liver.

Chromium for the sugar cravings.

Beetroot juice to get more oxygen in the blood for energy.

Probiotic drinks are a great way to help balance out our gut bacteria.

Dandelion to help cleanse the kidneys.

Everybody should introduce Cider vinegar their diet as it will alkalize the body to help deal with tummy issues and inflammatory problems.

Epsom salts to bathe in will not only help detoxify the body but will work as a muscle relaxant to help with a better night’s sleep ZzZzZz...

Home Styling & Decor News

Hello and Happy New Year Bloom readers! I hope you enjoyed a relaxing and peaceful Christmas break and are ready to face 2016 afresh. Although traditionally a time for new resolutions in our lives, for many people January is that long and dreary month we see no end to, when those first credit card bills roll in and our homes lack the fairy light sparkle of December so needed in the long, dark winter evenings. However despite all this post-Christmas doom and gloom, January is a brilliant time for reorganising our homes and ridding them of excess clutter, be it unwanted Christmas presents or tired old toys and clothes. Never underestimate the power of a good old-fashioned clear out! It gives a new lease of life to your home and makes you feel fantastic for having accomplished it. A win-win situation, no? It has to be said that January has its fair share of gloomy weather, so set aside a couple of rainy weekend afternoons and go through each room in your house, assessing which items you want to keep, which need to go into storage (seasonal clothing, Christmas decorations etc), those that can be donated to charity or sold on the likes of eBay or Gumtree and everything else for the trash pile. Keep an eye out for things that can be potentially up cycled or reused again in another fashion e.g. pretty fabric suitable for covering a cushion or glass jars and baskets for storing small items, and always try to recycle things if at all possible. Now that you have suitably decluttered your living space, you will be left with a lovely blank canvas when it comes to planning those decorating and home improvement projects for the Spring. Ridding your home of unwanted clutter is an absolutely necessary and sensible starting point in the process of freshening up your home and no amount of repainting or papering will hide the daily disorganised mess if it hasn't been tackled upfront! So get those sleeves rolled up and get started before the days get brighter and you spend more time outside. You’ll thank yourself for it come Spring!
