KARRO FOOD GROUP LAUNCH NEW RANGE OF WOW PRODUCTS Health food entrepreneur and busy mum Karen Daly has this month joined forces with the Karro Food Group (owner of Cookstown and the ‘McGee’s - Your Butcher’ brands) to create and launch WOW. WOW (which stands for ‘war on weight’) is a new range of high protein, low sugar and gluten-free meat products aimed at those who are time poor and dietary conscious. Karen herself is testament to the products’ success as she has maintained a four stone weight loss for over six years after shifting her dietary focus to a new way of eating. Available from this month in McGee’s butchers, the range includes delicious sausages, burgers and meatballs as well as chicken dishes which are convenient, quick to prepare and healthy – a winning combination in any slimmer’s armoury. Describing the product range itself, Karen continued: “The range includes succulent pork sausages made from extra lean pork with only 2% fat and 46 calories. Already incredibly popular are the sweet chilli and garlic sausages which come in both pork and turkey varieties. Everyone loves a burger, and with only 122 calories and 3% fat, ours can be enjoyed guilt-free. Included in the fresh meat offering the Meatballs Italiano are proving incredibly popular as they’re made with extra lean steak mince, herbs and spices in a tomato and basil sauce – all WOW! It has been predicted that sixty-four percent of UK women and 74 percent of men will be overweight in 2030 (World Health Organisation). Karen is passionate about making a difference to these frightening statistics through educating people to eat and enjoy more real food and adds that all WOW products sit well within all slimming plans and healthy lifestyle regimes. She added: “In the same way that I wanted to make changes to my own lifestyle and have reaped countless health and well-being benefits from doing so, I would love to help others do the same. Being healthy can be easy, and even fun, so if we can empower people to lead healthier lifestyles by making food convenient and tasty, then perhaps we can start to win the war on weight.
£110K RAISED BY DARING M&S EMPLOYEES FOR ACTION CANCER A massive £110,000 has been raised by Marks & Spencer employees for Action Cancer in just two months through a series of challenges which included a parachute jump and a 20-mile cycle ride. The 18 M&S stores across Northern Ireland set out to reach £100K in the summer for the charity’s counselling and therapeutic services. It has just been revealed that the 2,500 employees, family, friends and customers exceeded their target by taking part in many novel fundraising events which also included a 6 mile sponsored walk and in-store sponsored cyclothons. Ryan Lemon, Head of Region for M&S in Northern Ireland said, “£100,000 was an ambitious target but we were very hopeful all the employees would get behind the challenge. To break it, and more, is such an achievement and everyone is so proud. We wanted to think outside the box and come up with some different fundraising initiatives from the norm. We were delighted when we had suggestions such as parachute jumps and gruelling cycle challenges. So many of M&S employees have been affected by cancer in some way, so they made such an effort for this campaign. Thanks to all involved – it will make such a difference!”

THE NEARLY TRUE CHRISTMAS TOUR AT BALLYHACKAMORE Ballyhackamore Business Association has always taken Christmas seriously, and this year is no exception. Over the past number of years, the association has had huge success with their Christmas light switch-on event in the village... but this year they have decided to mix it up, and it has gone off the scale! Engaging the irrepressible talents of Young at Art, Northern Ireland’s leading arts organisation for children and young people, and supported by Belfast City Council through the Retail Action Plan, this year Christmas is turning into a hunt for Santa. That's right SANTA HAS BEEN KIDNAPPED! The 'Nearly True' Christmas Tour is an exciting walking tour around the village, where no stone will be left unturned in the hunt for Santa, making Christmas come alive for kids in a never to be forgotten story of wonder and awe. Culminating in the discovery of our jolly friend somewhere in Ballyhackamore, though this is only if the evil elves don't get their way. The hour long tour will be running every Saturday from 28th November to 19th December and further tours will be available on Monday 21st - Wednesday 23rd December in the run up to the big day. There are 3 tours each day to choose from at 11.00am, 1.00pm and 3.00pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance of the tour, and are available to buy from Greens Pizza in Ballyhackamore from 9th November. These are priced at £12 per child and £8 per adult and this will include a gift and a photo with Santa. Ricky Armstrong, Vice Chairperson, from the Business Association says' "We were looking for an alternative this year to really engage with the local children and families, and because it’s Christmas, we want to make it all about the kids. So if you want an alternative to visiting Santa in his grotto, then we feel this is the answer. It is sure to get all the kids, and we are pretty sure all the adults too, excited about Christmas." We will also be running our artisan food and craft markets in the run up to Christmas on 21st November and 19th December for all your Christmas gifts. We’ll be moving it indoors, so you’ll have time to browse, without worrying about the elements.
All details of the Nearly True Christmas Tours and artisan markets can be found on the Ballyhackamore Business Association Facebook page.

#GIVINGTUESDAY SIGNS UP 1,000 PARTNERS FOR GLOBAL DAY OF GIVING East Belfast Mission has joined more than 1,000 UK charities and businesses as an official partner of #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving at the start of the festive season. The day, led in the UK by the Charities Aid Foundation, takes place on Tuesday 1st December and follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday - two of the UK’s biggest shopping days. It is an opportunity for charities, families, businesses, community centres and students to come together to do something good for a cause they care about. East Belfast Mission has signed up again this year and is planning on providing those who attend with a deeper insight into the work of EBM. The plan is to showcase how the work of EBM impacts and enhances the lives of those they touch every day On the night you will hear client testimonials and will be entertained by EBM’s own Community Choir, guests, and some poetry reading. There will be an opportunity for some general networking and a look around the fabulous Skainos building followed up with a light supper from Refresh. Director of Operations, Anne Walsh said: "The #GivingTuesday event gives us a chance to connect with the local community and share and celebrate all the great work our staff and volunteers do, as well as giving us a chance to thank donors and raise awareness. This year we are focusing on “the friends of EBM”. We want to raise the profile of EBM and encourage people to support us by volunteering or donating either on a regular basis or as a one-off. Donations aren’t always monetary; we need donations of furniture and clothes to keep our shops well stocked throughout the year. We were astounded to see the emotion people felt last year when they heard real life stories and we have an even better evening in store this year”. For more information or to attend the event, please contact: Cathy Megahey – EBM PR Officer Email: cathy.megahey@ebm.org.uk Phone: 028 9045 8560

SECRET DAY SPA
Winter Care Skin Tips While you may well be mourning the beautifully hot summer days, there’s plenty to look forward to now the cooler nights are setting in. Think mugs of hot chocolate and warming your feet in big cosy socks while settling down with your favourite TV programmes in front of a toasty warm fire! See, winter sounds that little bit more appealing now! What isn’t quite so tempting is what the cold and frost threatens to do to our skin but thankfully though, we can plan ahead and do something about it before the cold, harsh wind takes its toll on our face, hands and body. Follow these few top tips to keeping your skin in fantastic condition during the cold snap.
1. Cover Up
Even in cold weather skin need protection. If you’re heading out into the cold, wrap up warm at all times. Aside from decreasing your chances of falling ill, it’s important to protect your skin from the elements, where possible. We love Dermalogica’s Barrier Repair moisturiser, which helps fortify sensitised skin and a damaged barrier (often as a result of the harsh elements), thanks to its UltraCalmingTM Complex. It’ll also minimise burning and discomfort caused by prolonged exposure to cold weather so if you’re going away, pack it in your overnight bag and make sure you have some to hand in your bathroom cabinet too.
2. Avoid Burning Hot Baths
Okay, so it’s not advisable to get in a burning hot bath anyway, but what we’re getting at here is don’t have your bath water too hot; it’ll only irritate dry, chapped
skin further. While you may think it’ll soothe your skin, you’ll only find it’ll make matters worse. Instead, opt for a bath with luke warm water and don’t clog the water up with bubble baths, salts and too many lotions and potions.Choose simple products for the body whilst in the water, and follow with a moisturising body treat like Dermalogica’s Ultrarich Body Cream.
3. Don’t Prod and Pick the Skin As tempting as it may be to pick at your dry, chapped skin, don’t do it!
Slather on the moisturiser where and when needed and leave well alone to give the skin time to heal thoroughly. Where possible, avoid highly perfumed products and make-up, which may only aggravate the skin some more and make dry patches appear more prominent. If you suffer from really dry skin that is sore, seek medical advice before using any products on the face or body.
4. Take Care of Your Hands
We tend to forget about our hands when it comes to skincare, but they should be as much a part of our daily beauty routine – if not more – as our face and body. After all, it’s our hands that take more of a beating each day, especially during the colder months. Don’t neglect your hands this winter, instead incorporate Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Hand and Nail Treatment into your day by spreading some of this non-greasy yet extremely moisturising product onto dry, chapped hands when required.

Dekko Bird
Like it or not, we’ve begun the countdown to Christmas (sorry!) and we all know how quickly our diaries fill up with that on the horizon. From this month onwards, we open up our homes to friends and family for festive drinks, cosy candlelit suppers and dinner parties, but before those invites are issued, here are some tips on how to transform your home into the warm and welcoming venue it should be this party season!
Make sure guests feel welcome before they even step inside your home. Ensure your front entrance is well lit for dark evenings with a stylish outdoor wall light and replant containers with a cool winter display using hardy foliage such as ivy and grasses with white mini cyclamen, heathers and pansies. (Visit Hillmount Garden Centre for inspiration). Adorn your front door with a wreath of berries, willow branches or foraged pine cones to see you through to the New Year. Extend the welcoming feel into your hallway, with perhaps some greenery entwined along the banister and strings of fairy lights draped across the ceiling for a soft twinkly glow. Social gatherings are centred around the living / dining area so it’s important to get the atmosphere right here. Crisp white table linen, tall candles and simple greenery combine to make a classic table setting. Light the fire to create a cosy focal point, set a big rattan basket of logs alongside and style your mantelpiece with a statement mirror, some delicate winter sprigs or pretty seed heads

arranged in a collection of glass jars and, instead of candles, try the elegant LED candle bell jar lamp at BHS (pictured). Scour local charity shops for unusual little dishes in which to serve olives, spiced nuts and other party bites, and for a cool retro vibe, make a statement with vintage cocktail glasses. Update coffee table reads to suit the season and fuel conversation with inspiring travel, art and photography books which can also be picked up secondhand - War on Want bookshop in Ballyhackamore is a good place to start. Finally, don’t forget the WC! Invest in hand towels with a fun festive print, scented diffuser reeds to keep the room fresh (try Bog Standard’s Winter fragrance at Doris&Jeannie) and, it’s ok, you can bring out the M&S Christmas loo roll now, too… K x See you next month for Christmas decor inspiration!

WITH 2016 FAST APPROACHING WE WILL ALL BE HEARING THAT SAME QUESTION OVER AND OVER AGAIN; WHAT ARE YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS? What about looking after yourself that little bit better? Let’s face it we all have one thing in common, a morning grooming routine. For us guys it doesn’t have to take forever. A quick 10 minutes in a hot shower should be enough to get us out the door looking and feeling fresh and ready to tackle life’s everyday tasks. For most guys a simple body wash and soap bar from a 6 pack they pick up from a bargain basket will do but all you will ever gain from that that are blocked pores and very greasy skin. Scrub yourself from head to toe and show your skin the attention it NEEDS!!
CLEANSING YOUR HAIR & SCALP Greasy hair that smells pretty harsh is a thing of the past as there are many fantastic haircare/styling products on the market, especially on the High Street, so choosing one won’t cost a fortune. Pick up a daily cleansing shampoo; any brand you find in a high street chemist will do just lovely. I would strongly recommend using an anti-dandruff shampoo at least twice a week! Remember its New Year not Christmas!!
MATCH YOUR STYLING PRODUCT WITH YOUR HAIR TYPE When deciding on a styling product have a fair idea of what kind you need to keep your hair looking thick, healthy and of course stylish. Thick hair can handle waxes, pomades and wet look gels, if your hair is fine/thinning, then I strongly recommend a matte clay or Fibre product. Hairsprays can be good also. Using wet look products on fine/thinning hair will make the scalp more visible so absolutely avoid using them. A light hold wet-look gel however can be used before blow-drying fine hair but always finish with a matte product. If you’re unsure about what products to use simply ask your hairdresser, they will gladly offer you advice. Also you should become a regular at

your chosen Salon. Book your next appointment while you’re there for around 4 weeks’ time. Even if you plan on Growing your hair taking the tiniest ends off will not only keep your hair in immaculate order it will increase the speed of growth. Using Scalp tonics such as Bay Rum will help simulate the scalp and roots which can be an extreme benefit to growing your hair into a longer style.
FACE & BODY Face scrubs are simply face washes designed to remove dead skin cells from the face. Microbeads? Nonsense! As fancy as they can sound a scrub with very little ‘microbeads’ will not benefit your skin that much nor will it remove dead skin cells as they promise. Find a scrub with Plenty of Grit and only use 3 times a week at the most. Every other day of the week go for a plain face wash that's less abrasive. Exfoliating gloves or sea sponges are perfect for removing other dead skin cells from the neck down along with a daily body scrub. Use a fresh towel to pat dry the skin on your face and finish using a very small amount of moisturiser. Use products such as Shea butter or Coconut oil on your body. They are well known for naturally hydrating skin and balancing your skins tone. You'll be looking better than you feel in no time.

We know your love for all things handcrafted, so each month we’ll be sharing our favourites found while browsing markets and local boutiques.
Bean to Bar Stone Ground Chocolate made from single origin cocoa beans. The NearyNog family have been pairing best quality chocolate with winning flavour combinations for years in south Armagh. The quest to source ethically grown chocolate made with no unnecessary ingredients wasn't easy. Being adventurous, they sourced single origin cocoa beans from fair trade farms in Ecuador, Peru & Madagascar. They now roast, crack, winnow, stonegrind and then age, small batches of cocoa beans to make beautiful hand crafted chocolate.
Armstrongs Twisted Fish Dog Treats We are dog lovers who hand make premium fish skin dog treats, fish skin which we source locally from fishmongers in Belfast and Bangor. This fish skin is a waste product to the fishmongers, but we transform it into our nutritious dog treats. Our business started by accident, as our own dog Bailey is allergic to most conventional dog treats and food so we began making her treats which wouldn’t affect her allergies. We only use natural products, using no additives, preservatives or colourings, so our treats are hypoallergenic and healthy, with each product having a broad range of health benefits…and crucially, dogs LOVE them. We are always available via our online shop and 7 days a week in Studio Souk, Belfast, as well as various outlets, a full list is available on our website, www.armstrongstwistedfish.com We can be found at various markets and events including Farmers Market at The Inns (last Saturday of the month), the best place to keep up to date is to follow us on Facebook.

The Strand celebrates its 80th birthday on 7th December. This is an amazing milestone. It is the last surviving 1930s cinema in Northern Ireland, enjoying a new lease of life as East Belfast’s cultural hub, screening the latest blockbusters, classic and cultural cinema, live music and theatre, performing arts classes and creative workshops. The Strand has just refreshed its entrance foyer with an Art Deco twist and you can now enjoy a relaxed Nespresso before or after the film/event. Sadly George Clooney himself won’t be pouring the coffee, but you can’t have everything! So if you haven’t been to the Strand for a while, or have never been, why not pay it a visit? As part of its 80th anniversary celebrations, there will be a Family Open Day on 5th December with free screenings, face painting, balloons and cake... lots of cake! Why not go on one of the Strand Hertitage Tours (21st November & 19th December) when expert projectionist and film enthusiast Alan McClurg will take you on a guided tour of this original picture palace, and East Belfast Historical Society archivist Oscar Ross will give an illustrated talk on Sunday 6th December about the Strand's glorious past, and its future plans. Find out more at www.strandartscentre.com.
For full list of anniversary events, contact Strand Arts Centre in person, by phoning (028) 9065 5830 or online at www.strandartscentre.com.

Bloom readers, I don't know about you, but I'm freezing. The jumpers are down from the loft. The heating is most definitely on. Those nights are drawing in and there's a festive feel in the air. What does that mean for those of us with children? Plague season! Our house has been infected for about a month. First it was the baby, with a hacking cough that prevented her, (and therefore me), from sleeping for most of the night. Fine during the day, she would come within 6 inches of a mattress or pillow and the coughing would stop. Not just any cough. That real guttural one that is halfway between a retch and a choke. We tried the cough syrups and the propping up with pillows; I even rubbed Vicks on the soles of her feet. After 3 weeks of it, we were prescribed an inhaler, so now our bedtime prep looks like this:
Of course, when the baby stopped coughing, the 4 year old started. And then the husband. And the grandparents. My poor mum, who thinks that most ailments can be cured with Benylin and Beecham's Powders, (other cold remedies are available), had to admit defeat and go to the doctor when she had it in waves. So, to avoid the plague, stock up on your Vitamin C and your echinacea, because, as they say on Game of Thrones, winter is coming.
If all else fails and I succumb, I might try the cure-all I learnt from the Greek dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding - Windex! (Disclaimer That last bit is only a joke, use it for cleaning your windows, it will not cure colds!)

Get In Step Podiatry with Dr Elaine Hoey PhD
Why do you need us?
Podiatrists provide comprehensive advice and treatment for a wide range of foot and lower limb problems including corns, hard skin, fungal nails, athletes foot, verrucae, heel and arch pain, foot pain, sports injuries and many more.
Chiropody/Podiatry
Biomechanics/Gait Analysis
A chiropody treatment includes the cutting of the toe-nails, removal of in-grown toe-nails, callouses (hard skin) and corns and the treatment of foot ailments such as verrrucae, athletes foot, fungal nails, dry/cracked heels and many more.
As a Podiatrist, I will assess your posture and the way you walk/run (Gait). Common problems I treat in this way include, hip and lower back pain, knee pain, shin splints, ankle pain, achilles tendonititis, heel pain, foot pain and many more.
At PhysioworksNI, I employ the latest technology available. The 3D Gyroscope (computerised analysis) is used to provide more detailed information so that the best treatment and advice is available to all patients through exercises and customised orthotics/insoles.
Remember Head to Toe Health! Get In Step Podiatry is based at PhysioWorksNI. Tel 02890702002 or 07715315851 for an appointment www.getinsteppodiatry.co.uk We can be found on Facebook .
Get Inspired….Get Active….Get In Step…. What is Gait Analysis and Why should you care? Whether you are on your feet all day, walk a lot; you are a seasoned runner or just starting out, the right trainers are essential but may not be the only requirement.
How do you choose? Confused by the Wall of Choice, “technical jargon” or do you just simply opt for aesthetics without any idea of what we are getting our feet into? Everyone is different and has different needs and preferences.
Forefoot, mid or heel striker? Do you over pronate (when your foot rolls inwards after you hit the ground) or pronate just right or is your left foot different from your right?
The good news is there’s a simple solution to get you up and running, the right way: Gait Analysis
Road runner or trail blazer? A shoe that suits one person may prove ineffective for another. The right or wrong trainer can make a difference to your PB but more importantly can protect you from injury and help correct discomfort along the way.
Here how it works: Gait Analysis is about looking at the movement of the whole body. Foot and ankle movements can play a vital role in the movement of the hips and trunk and vise versa. Head to Toe Health!! Book an appointment at PhysioWorksNI. When you arrive you will be asked to
walk and/or run on a treadmill. You are in control of the speed. Gait will be assessed both barefoot and with your current trainers. Is your pain or injury on one side? No 2 feet are the same. Running shoe or trainer ‘prescription’ treat both feet the same way. Customised Orthotics/Insoles may help you towards a much more natural gait. Suitable for all Sports and Non-Sports Individuals.

HIT THE WEIGHTS
TO BLAST THE FAT! Hi my name is Ross Masterson, and I am one of the Personal Trainers at I Work Out. One of the first questions on everyone’s lips when they want to lose weight is cardio or weight training? So many women are scared of lifting weights because they are afraid it will make them appear ‘bulky’. This fitness myth is simply not true! Although steady state cardio (walking or running at the same pace) may burn more calories per minute, resistance training will continue to burn calories AFTER you have completed your workout! Yep that’s right, if you lie on your sofa after and watch a movie – your body is still working and burning off calories! Resistance training burns mainly fat, whereas cardio burns both fat and muscle. This might result in losing more pounds on the scale, but it won’t give you the body you are after. This is because ‘tone’ comes from well-shaped muscles and resistance training protects shapes and maintains those muscles. Cardio and resistance training both have their advantages, but what is best for fat loss? BOTH! If you have a lot of fat to lose, cardio is a great stepping stone for increasing your fitness levels and burning calories quickly. However, in order to achieve that toned sculpted body that most women want, you will need to add in some resistance workouts I Work Out offer several FREE induction slots each week as an introduction into resistance training; however booking a Personal Trainer is the best way to get in shape.

CONNSWATER COMMUNITY GREENWAY CONTINUES TO DEVELOP IN EAST BELFAST The Connswater Community Greenway will eventually become a 16km (nearly 10mile) cycle/walkway that will connect up open spaces and parks within east Belfast. The Greenway is currently under construction across most of east Belfast. Once complete the Connswater Community Greenway will follow the Connswater, Knock and Loop Rivers in east Belfast. It will run from Victoria Park linking up places along the way including, Mersey Street, Holywood Arches, Orangefield Park, Clarawood, Laburnum, Braniel, Elmgrove, Cregagh and on to the hills of the Cregagh Glen. The entire Greenway should be complete by the end of 2016. Our contractor, Farrans Construction is focusing on all work fronts including; - Along the Black Path (Sydenham Bypass to Mersey Street) construction continues to complete the piling works on both sides of the Connswater River and have begun the installation of a reinforced flood wall. - The construction of the C.S. Lewis Civic Square continues at Holywood Arches with focus on what will become the performance area with the placement of large granite tiles. - Further along the scheme from Beersbridge Road to Elmgrove the contractor has continued to make good progress with the continued construction of a flood retaining wall and the beginning of concreting works on the Connswater Community Greenway pathway. - The extension of Orangefield Park to the Knock Dual Carriageway continues. The pathway is now complete and andscaping works have begun. Elsewhere, Farrans have begun works from Ladas Drive to Montgomery Road with the installation of a Readyrock Wall at the Belfast Metropolitan College. On the road sections of the Connswater Community Greenway Farrans continue to progress well on the Cregagh Road and Orby Road to Orby Link installing granite kerbing and resurfacing footpaths. Farrans plan to start construction at Montgomery Road soon to continue the kerbing and resurfacing works for the scheme. If you have any questions, queries or comments on our construction works please telephone Farrans Free Customer Care Line on 0800 0838 160.

TONIC HEALTH & WELLNESS FESTIVAL LAUNCHES A FESTIVAL celebrating health and wellbeing will take place in Belfast next month.
Organised by sound therapist Tessa Greer, the first TONIC Health & Wellness Festival and first Health & Wellness Festival for Belfast will be hosted at T13 in the Titanic Quarter on Sunday November 8 will feature a range of health and wellbeing exhibitors, practitioners, workshops and talks. From highlighting a range of health and wellness options on offer for individuals and families from all walks of life and offering a selection of nutritious healthy food and drink options to offering visitors free talks and workshops, as well as experience of a range of complementary therapies, the event is set to welcome a whole host of people and exhibitors to T13. Tessa Greer, who is a sound therapist with her own company The
Sound Healing Spa, said: “At the festival we will have a range of natural, complementary and conventional therapies represented as well as complementary therapy taster sessions, talks and workshops in everything from yoga and Tai Chi to personal development as well as personal training demos, a kids and families area, creativity and wellbeing exhibitors, music and dance performances amongst many other experiences.” “Through the work I now do, it is very much focused on encouraging others to pay attention to and improve their own health and wellness. The work I deliver and the way in which I deliver it is very much about raising awareness around what people can do to help themselves, over and above the time the take out of their lives to come along to my sessions. “It’s very encouraging to see people interact with what I do and understand that they have even more of a part to play than I do, in improving their own experience of life through improved wellbeing.
“Bringing the TONIC Health & Wellness Festival together allows me to pull together my personal and working experience of this industry so far, the people who contribute to this industry and my previous experience of working on and organising festivals and events. “Through this offering I hope to bring a wide range of knowledge, experiences and awareness to the public around what wellness options are available to them as individuals, their families and friends that can encourage them to consider improving their own experience of life in some way.” Tickets for the TONIC Health & Wellness Festival are £5 per person (£3 concession & £12 Family ticket 2 adults 2 kids) and available from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide, by calling 0844 277 44 55 or from www.ticketmaster.ie.
