C.S. LEWIS INSPIRES LAMPPOST CAFE Set as a tribute to one of Belfast’s greatest minds, CS Lewis, The Lamppost cafe invites customers to enter through a wardrobe where they will encounter an iconic book staircase, a lush earthy Narnia inspired interior and of course Aslan himself. New owner Stuart Leitch (previous chef of the Lindores coffee house, by which it was formerly known) seeks to go beyond the traditional cafe experience, giving customers a unique environment in which they can enjoy locally sourced coffee and foods, as well as celebrating local culture and community through various themed nights. Treats to look forward to are monthly Open Mic nights, French nights, poetry readings and starting in October, Friday and Saturday Bistro nights. The Lamppost is more than a cafe, hidden references to CS Lewis, quotes and the works of other literary masters are jotted all around the cafe. There are even doodle pads and a chalkboard for customers to leave their mark. You will find it hard not to leave here inspired, encouraged and well-fed! 19 Upper Newtownards Road, Belfast, BT4 1PG

ULSTER RUGBY SUMMER CAMPS Ulster Rugby heroes, Kyle McCall and Johnny Murphy called in last week to the Centra Ulster Rugby Summer Girls Camp at Malone RFC, to give hints and tips to the budding young players attending the camp. One lucky player, Katharine Magwood aged 14 from Saintfield received a special certificate in recognition of his playing skills. Katharine joined other local girls at the five day camp to learn new skills and meet the visiting rugby heroes. All participants received a Summer Camp boot bag with T-shirt, Rugby ball and a voucher to claim a free ticket to an Ulster Game at the Kingspan Stadium. Ulster Rugby Summer Camps, sponsored by independent retail group Centra, are taking place at 24 locations across Ulster this summer and will cater to almost 2,000 young players. While most of the Summer Camps are for children aged 6-12, there are three camps tailored specially for Girls’ rugby, a special needs camp and the ever popular Senior Camp aimed at boys and girls aged 13-17 years old.

EAST BELFAST TEENS REVEAL AMBITIOUS YOUTH-LED TECH CONFERENCE Three Belfast teens have today announced details of Create:2015, an entirely youth-led event for CultureTECH in September, which aims to inspire those destined to work in the digital and creative industries. Gareth Reid (17), Matthew Carson (19) and Jordan Earle (18), all from the east of the city, will join three other teens from across Northern Ireland in creating an event allowing young people to network and hear from renowned guest speakers. Create:2015, held on the 17th of September at the Playhouse in Derry~Londonderry, will feature eight speakers, including BBC Click Presenter Kate Russell, and four hands-on workshops. Last year’s event, Create:2014, was given the thumbs-up by none other than cultural icon Stephen Fry on Twitter. Student Gareth Reid, heading up the team, said: “Create:2015 gives attendees a great chance to get creative. We really wanted to focus on audience involvement this year. With a diverse speaker line-up and interactive workshops, we’ve no doubt that Create:2015 will be even better than last year.” A limited number of tickets will be available to the public. For school groups, the event is completely free. Teachers interested in getting involved can email Gareth for further information at gareth.reid@create.to. local Focus Belmont Road

Belmont Tower celebrating 125 years I can hear it now. Some of you are saying, what and where is Belmont Tower? Well, we are the old Belmont Primary School, saved and transformed by local residents into a flexible space open to everyone. But we are so much more than that. Now a National Trust property located on the corner of Belmont Road and Belmont Church Road, we are involved with local festivals such as the Eastside Arts Festival and the CS Lewis Festival. We have rooms available for children’s birthday parties, training days, meetings and more. There are groups that meet on a regular basis like Baby Sensory, The House of Homebrew and the East Belfast Historical Society, to mention just a few. In our coffee shop, we have been serving you, our lovely customers, cappuccinos, lattes and the best scones (that’s what our customers say, sorry other scone makers!) for the last 10 years. We also have a National Trust shop on the ground floor, so pop in for a browse. You are sure to find a bargain. We enjoy meeting new people, especially past pupils, and have built up quite a collection of class photos dating back to 1919. Why not come in and have a look. See if you can spot yourself, or maybe your parents.

|

We are always on the lookout for more pictures to add to the collection, so if you have any, please send us a copy or bring them in. We will scan them and give them straight back, promise. Your thoughts and memories about Belmont Tower or the old school are also important to us. We want to capture them and share them with others. You stories are the history of this building.

#SHOPLOCAL on the Belmont Road Not being one to pigeon hole myself to one area of this magazine, I wanted to take the opportunity to write a little bit about Belmont Road which we all know and love! When I was much younger I clearly remember my Mum doing all her shopping for our family essentials on Belmont Road. She worked locally and it was part of her route home. I often wondered how she did it, but she did it and did it weekly. At the time, it wasn't a matter of supporting small, local independent retailers, to her this was about the height of her choice not having access to a car. However, when you think about it, the same is true of Belmont Road today, except today it has even more to offer.

I live very close to it and rarely do I feel the need to go further afield for essentials. Many of us in East Belfast will pass it quite regularly but do we really stop to think of exactly what it has on offer? As well as all the high quality coffee shops, restaurants and takeaways that cater to every taste, you also have a long established butcher and fruit shop. On top of a local Tesco, You also have a

range of estate and letting agents, a florist, an art gallery, a vintage shop, an alterations place, a charity shop, a clothes shop, a post office, kitchen supplier, beauty salons, hairdressers, newsagents, an off licence, insurance broker, chemists, health food shop, barbers, a travel agent, chiropodists, opticians, bridal salon, hardware shop, bakery and a dry cleaners! Did I forget the deli and our very own Slim's Healthy Kitchen?!

For my part though the real gems on the road are the gift/homeware shops. They are all of such high quality and you are always guaranteed to be able to pick up the perfect gift or card or the perfect addition to your home decor. Belmont is a great little place to shop. The personal touch of the people who work there and the knowledge that you are supporting local business only serves to add to its appeal.

#LOVEBELMONT meet the locals Alison Morris

I grew up in the area and remember the Belmont Road when Cafe Smart used to be Legge Brothers - my Granny's favourite shoe shop. I love that whilst it has changed over the years, some establishments have still remained. One of my favourites is Dundela pharmacy which is nostalgia filled as it where we took our films to get developed after a post A-level girls' holiday to Santa Ponsa! The excitement of all standing there and seeing our photos (all 20 rolls of them) for the first time has not left me. I still have the photos and that they are a shocking testament to 90s fashion. It's also where I bought my Christmas presents as a child in the form of scented soaps and bubble bath. Nowadays I use it for passport photos, endless bottles of Calpol, makeup and the odd Christmas present although my family are grateful that I can now afford Clinique products instead of soap on a rope!

Belmont Road certainly has lots to offer but I think if I had to pick my favourite it would have to be 'Just For You'. It has just celebrated 25 years in business and living locally, I clearly remember going there when it first opened! I use it for everything from family gifts, cards and birthday party supplies to baby gifts and kids birthday presents! I always check out the jewellery and scarves for a wee gift for myself! I also make time for a potter in Doris & Jeannie and Bank is a favourite spot for tea. Especially with the kids in tow!

Belmont Park is a semi-wild country park on the edge of buzzing east Belfast. Biodiversity and natural habitats abound in the park and it includes a network of paths which lead through grassland, wildflower meadows and copses of bluebells and trees. A footbridge also provides access across the ring road from one side of the park to the other. Belmont Park is extremely popular with local dog walkers and is an important local resource where residents gather to socialise. The park also contains a well-used children's playground and is home to a wide range of community events. It has an active and enthusiastic Friends Group. Adjacent to the park is an allotment area, one of seven allotment sites we offer in Belfast. There certainly is an active interest in community growing in Belmont with currently all 56 plots reserved within the allotment. Art lovers will also enjoy Unmasked, a series of large, colourful carved figures designed by Owen Crawford as part of our Art in the Park programme, which are located in the park.

ERIC MERCER OPTICIANS

YOUR VISION MATTERS: NATIONAL EYE HEALTH WEEK

The sixth annual National Eye Health Week takes place this month from 21st – 27th September. The Week aims to inspire people to make healthy lifestyle choices that will benefit their eyes, as well as highlighting the importance of having regular eye tests. To help you get on track, here are 6 top tips for keeping your eyes healthy.

1: Eat a healthy diet

4: Keep fit

Most of us aren’t aware that what we eat can affect how well we see. However, research shows that eye-friendly nutrients found in many fruit and vegetables can help protect against conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts. Dark green leafy veg, like spinach and kale, are particularly beneficial. Also, oily fish, like salmon and tuna are packed with omega 3 which helps ease the symptoms of dry eyes.

Studies show that even moderate exercise can help reduce your risk of glaucoma by lowering eye pressure and improving blood flow to the optic nerve. Also, the antioxidant effects of exercise are thought to reduce your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

5: Protect against UV light

Recent research shows that being a smoker can double your chances of sight loss. Toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke damage the delicate surface and the internal structure of the eye. This increases your risk of developing eye conditions like macular degeneration, cataracts, thyroid eye disease and dry eyes.

Exposure to the sun’s UV rays increases your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as pterygium and eyelid cancer. Surprisingly, the sun in autumn is more hazardous than summer sunshine. That’s because the lower position of the sun in the sky in autumn means more UV radiation enters your eyes. To ensure full UV protection, always choose sunglasses marked “CE” or “BS EN 1836:2005”.

3: Watch your weight

6: Book an eye test

A high body mass index (BMI) doubles your risk of suffering macular degeneration and significantly increases your chances of developing cataracts. It also increases your risk of developing eye complications from general health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure.

And, last but not least, don’t forget to book an eye test if you haven’t had one in the last two years. Remember, a sight test is not just about getting glasses - it is also a vitally important health check for you and your eyes.

2: Quit smoking

For further tips and guidance on looking after your eyes, click on the National Eye Health Week website at: www.visionmatters.org.uk.

Ice-Hockey Makes A GIANT Return To Belfast! ahead of the Stena Line Belfast Giants 2015/16 Season, starting this September at the SSE Arena Belfast! The Stena Line Belfast Giants are BACK!! Saturday 12th September is opening night at The SSE Arena, Belfast, face-off 7pm, with the Manchester Storm the visitors. The 2015/16 season will see lots of fresh faces in the Giants lineup, including Derrick Walser, the new Head Coach, who will be surrounded by a new coaching structure that sees experienced Giants faces Rob Stewart, Adam Keefe, Brandon Benedict and Shane Johnson all return to the organisation as the team goes in search of a fifth league title. “This is a team - not a one man show,” says Walser, in his first few days in his new role with the Belfast side. "Our key focus is to get everyone to buy in, accept their role and believe in themselves.” "Having the new coaching team is great - I’m different to how my other coaches are as they see things differently to how I do. They’re advice is key for me this season.” With over 30 home games coming to Belfast across the new season - Walser gives fans a glimpse of what they can expect from the ‘new’ Giants team this year: “You can’t win 50 games - but you can play hard for 50. With our skill level - when we play hard, play relaxed and follow a structure - that’s when good teams end up winning. That is the type of team I want - guys who are willing to work hard and sacrifice.” Tickets for the new season are on sale now from The SSE Arena, Belfast Box Office by calling (028) 9073 9074 or online at www.Ticketmaster.ie. Go to www.BelfastGiants.com for information on fixtures and all the latest Giants news.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

FRIDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER

FRIDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER

A Stageplay from Kandu Theatre

London. The arse-end of the 1960s. Two unemployed actors-acerbic: The elegantly wasted Withnail, and the anxiety-ridden 'I', are drowning their frustrations in booze, pills, and lighter fluid. When Withnail's Uncle Monty offers his cottage, they escape the squalor of their flat for what they expect to be a wonderful week in the countryside... but they soon realise they've gone on holiday by mistake when their wits - and their friendship - are sorely tested by uninhabitable huts, less-than-hospitable locals, and more-than-friendly family members. Adapted from Bruce Robinson's hilariously intelligent, highly quotable, semi-autobiographical, and cult favourite 1987 film, this stage production from Kandu Theatre will be sure to leave you tremendously tickled... and terribly tipsy. Chin-Chin!

3 Men and a Baby

SUNDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER

New York City roommates Peter (Tom Selleck), Michael (Steve Guttenberg) and Jack (Ted Danson) are all successful and happily unmarried, but Peter and Michael get the surprise of a lifetime when a young woman abandons an infant in front of their loft. They also receive a letter stating that the child, named Mary, belongs to Jack, but he's away on business. Michael and Peter are then forced to care for Mary - and though they make hopeless babysitters, they soon become quite attached to the girl.

EXPERT Trouble Sleeping? Some people say they are in pain when they are in bed, or maybe they have hot flushes, or getting up to use the loo and some people who say they can not switch off. So in my opinion I treat them for the reason they can’t sleep (first rule of herbal medicine is to treat the cause and not the symptom). Individual advice would be needed for these symptoms. Day to day life can get on top of us and we feel overwhelmed emotionally and Jacqui Maxwell physically. If we don't get a good nights sleep we start to burn out reaching for Natures Way anything to give us energy - sugary foods, caffeine and alcohol all which deplete our bodies of vital vitamins and nutrients having huge affects on our health. It can be a vicious circle for some people. I also hear some people say they dread going to bed for fear of not sleeping, A few things I advise to calm the body and mind down are removing yourself from such things as TVs, phones and computers. Avoid reading as this is still stimulating. Instead do a crossword or puzzle to tire the brain out. Put some Lavender and Camomile oils on your pillow and try some herbal tea such as Lemon Balm or Valerian. Learn to enjoy bed time as its the time our bodies need to recover and heal. Our Immune systems can hugely be affected by lack of sleep and as we are about to head towards the colder half off the year ( I hear you chuckle) we must be prepared. The serious lack of sunshine means we may all be in need of some vitamin D. The kiddies are back at school now and that can mean sniffles and snuffles and lots more so make sure they get enough sleep too.

Valerian is the main sleep herb and can help restore natural sleep patterns. For pains or cramps and to help relax the body for a restful sleep try Magnesium. Sage is a great way to cool the body down when hot flushes keep you awake. My Favourite herb Rhodiola is the herb for stress and anxiety, low mood and general feeling off “cant catch your tail”. For Immunity Elderberry, Echinacea, Vit C, Probiotics, A good clean diet and plenty of exercise are all ways to keep us healthy.

Hi there Bloom readers, I hope all your kiddies are settled in their new school year, and that life has regained some kind of pattern and normalcy. This issue I wanted to share my thoughts on birthday parties, as we've just thrown one for our eldest. Her Dad didn't really want to be bothered with a party, so we'd agreed we'd see what the weather was doing and maybe just have a casual picnic in the park with her friends. Unfortunately, a week before her birthday, the forecast was not looking good. Rain was predicted for days around the date. Cue one stressed-out mum (me) going into panic mode. Many texts and phone calls later, I had a venue booked and 12 children poised to descend on a Frozen themed party. And 2 days to organise it. Thanks to a plethora of pound shops, and thanks to Pinterest I spent hours dying various party food blue. Needless to say, I got stressed out by the whole affair, and by the time the party arrived I'd nearly filed for divorce and was crying into a mould of unset blue jelly... Now, I got into that state despite the fact that the party wasn't in my house, and I didn't have a whole class to worry about, plus I'm friends with most of the mums and if the kids had turned up to a bag of crisps and a petit filous they'd probably have been more than happy. So what will I be like next year, when I'll have the whole school politics thing to worry about? Do we invite just her friends, or the whole class? Do we allow siblings to come? Do we have to provide food for the adults? How much is appropriate to spend on a present? So, a plea from one stressed mum to others... Can we all just calm down? Can we go back to the days when pass the parcel and a bit of jelly and cake was enough? Can we stop competing with each other, stop trying to replicate amazingly creative things we've seen on the internet and just go back to basics? Can we enforce a cap on the amount we spend on presents for children we've never heard of? Can we get them all books? Or a packet of stickers. Or, as one older lady told me she'd got for her 5th birthday, 'a nice pencil'? Otherwise we're all going to need a second mortgage and a prescription for stronger meds! P.S. Thanks to the lovely staff at Scoopalicious in Ballyhackamore and their Frozen Party Room, our venue, who offer an ice-cream sundae kid's party package at a very reasonable price. They haven't paid me to mention them, but good service always deserves a shout-out.

RESTART your fitness JounreY Summer (if you can call it that!) is over and the kids are back to school! Now is the time to think about starting or re-starting your fitness journey. We have lots happening here at I Work Out in September – including a NEW timetable launch on 7th September, NEW classes introduced including PiYo (a workout inspired by Yoga & Pilates moves but at a faster pace) and the monthly challenge to win prizes! As with any new routine remember to start off slowly with both your diet and training, try to introduce something new each week and don’t take on too much at once. Consistency is the key to success! Here are a few tips to get you started:

Establish a single goal and work towards it Join a class – a perfect way to meet new people, have fun and get moving Sign up for a FREE gym induction – an essential introduction to the gym equipment

Ask a PT for a FREE consultation – a great opportunity to discuss how they can help you achieve your individual goals Don’t forget about nutrition - increase your protein and healthy fat intake, eat plenty of fruit and veg, ditch sugar and wheat, eat complex carbs and increase water intake. Diet is 80% results!

Have a great September everyone; see you next month when Naomi will be discussing class fitness in more detail. Healthy regards Jill

Dear Diary : Decorate the Lounge

Like most of you I keep putting of the inevitable, the interior of my house. We all hate the thought of clearing out, taking down and starting over. The thought is often worse than actually having the work done. However, Autumn is on its way, chipdren are back at school, holidays over and the nights are getting darker and finally we are beginning to think about decorating, refurbishing or perhaps even moving just in time for (i’m afraid to say it) CHRISTMAS!.. I think Autumn is a great time to think about all of the above.

At E interiors we have over 20 years experience in Interior Architecture & Interior Design so between us we have tackled most things and been faced with a lot of unplanned surprises. So over the next few months I aim to help guide you to improving the space you live in, with a few professional tips and ideas we are going to give your room a facelift and look amazing, particularly for all those cosy winter evenings Just to wet your appetite this years new collections are full of fashionable florals, some digitally printed, bugs, butterflies and birds and the colours are spectacular, I was exceptionally impressed with the Harlequin Amazilia an exotic collection of delicate birds, feathers and flowers Stunning. Osborne & Little’s new Pasha collection inspired with a Turkish theme. Designers Guilds Oriental Shanghai Garden collection with glorious silks, amazing prints and plush velvets. We are truly spoilt for choice.

109A Bloomfield Avenue, Belfast, Co. Antrim, BT5 5AB

Texture is one of the most important factors when planning a scheme, I like to mix it up using various textures, silks, cottons, linens, wools and extravagant and luxurious velvets. If your budget is limited use the most luxurious and expensive fabrics in small amounts, for example re-cover a footstool, which generally will require approximately 1-2 metres of fabric. Cushions are another great way of mixings fabrics and colours and are also inexpensive, but it will create drama and luxury both at the same time. Wooden blinds are also very affordable and work exceptionally well in both traditional and contemporary schemes. If wooden shutters are outside your budget this is a great way to create a similar effect particularly if you use Co-ordinating tapes. Timberlux have launched a new range of colours in greys, taupes and creams and they are a perfection combination giving both style and privacy but will also blend with your scheme. In the shop we have some on display which you can view along with drapes, wallcoverings, sheers from Designers, Guild, Larsen, Andrew Martin, Harlequin. Sanderson and more.

Please call in and see us at E interiors and hopefully we can help you put a line through your SEPTEMBER 2015 diary entry, decorate the lounge, COMPLETED.
