COUNCIL ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO RECYCLE MORE Ards and North Down Borough Council, along with recycling charity WRAP, is encouraging residents to recycle household items they have never considered before as part of the national Recycle Week (22 – 28 June) 2015 campaign. This year’s Recycle Week theme of ‘recycling around the home’ will help residents expand their recycling routine to all rooms in the home. Many households regularly recycle items like plastic milk bottles from the kitchen, but it’s also easy to recycle many other items from the bathroom, living room and even the bedroom using your blue bin. In addition, the bathroom has a whole heap of items that can be recycled such as cardboard toilet roll tubes and toothpaste boxes. Research indicates that if everyone in the United Kingdom (UK) recycled one toothpaste box, it would save enough energy to run a fridge in over 2,000 homes for a year. Plastic shampoo and moisturiser bottles can all be accepted for recycling, along with liquid soap, bleach and bathroom cleaner bottles. The bedroom is home to a variety of recyclable items - tissue boxes, old magazines and deodorant cans (do not squash) are all accepted in the blue bin. In fact, if everyone in the UK recycled one aluminum deodorant aerosol, enough energy could be saved to vacuum over 480,000 homes for a year. In the living room, newspapers, catalogues (hard backing removed) and air freshener aerosol cans (do not squash) can be recycled. If everyone in the UK recycled one aluminum air freshener aerosol can, enough energy could be saved to run a fridge for over 91,000 homes for a year. Although there’s nearly always a strong focus on the kitchen, there are a few items that sometimes get overlooked, such as breakfast cereal, frozen food boxes and dishwasher tablet boxes not to mention washing-up liquid and sauce bottles (rinsed out). Remember to look in the cupboard under the sink for plastic bleach and surface cleaner bottles which can also be recycled. When you are finished with a tin of biscuits or sweets the tin can be recycled too. And finally don’t forget drinks cartons and tin foil and foil trays (please rinse these) can also be recycled in the blue bin. “During Recycle Week we want to thank everyone for their recycling efforts” said Emma Adair, Recycling Officer, Ards and North Down Borough Council. “What’s currently recycled makes a huge difference, so just imagine what else could be achieved by recycling those items that are sometimes forgotten. We are encouraging residents to think a little further than the kitchen and recycle items from other rooms in the home.” Everything you recycle brings real benefits. It comes back again and again as new stuff, saving resources and helping the environment. Drinks cans from around the home are recycled into new cans which can be back on the shelves in just 8 weeks and plastic bottles can be turned into footy shirts, fleeces and new plastic bottles. For more information on what can be collected for recycling from the home or to find the nearest bring banks and Household Waste Recycling Centre visit www.recyclenow.com.

11 (WO)MEN AND THEIR DOGS ARE NOW GOOD CITIZEN CERTIFIED 11 dog owners learned how to teach their pets the right tricks from the very beginning at a special training programme run by Ards and North Down Borough Council during May and June (2015). The five week puppy foundation course, which is part of the Kennel Club’s ‘Good Citizen Dog Scheme’, dealt specifically with basic commands such as sit, and stand, walking in a controlled way and food manners, as well as how to overcome and avoid problems with teething, sleeping and feeding, which are common among young dogs. Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Alan Graham, said: “Puppies learn most of their behaviours - good or bad - at an early age so it is much better to train your puppy from as young an age as possible. After all, a well behaved dog makes for a much more enjoyable lifelong companion.” The Council will be running a more advanced class for adult dogs in September. If you would like to receive information about the course contact Dawn Phillips on 028 9182 4043 or email dawn.phillips@ardsandnorthdown.gov.uk.
WINNERS OF COUNCIL ART COMPETITION ANNOUNCED Daisy Jones from Kirkistown Primary School and Sophie Brown from Kircubbin Integrated Primary School are the winners of a boat drawing competition organised by Ards and North Down Borough Council. Over 100 local school children took part in the competition that tasked participants across two age categories – 4 - 7 years and 8 - 11 years – to draw a picture of a vessel. The winners were announced on 19 June at Portaferry Visitor Information Centre. Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Alan Graham, commented: “The competition was very appropriate for our Council area as we have one of the longest coastlines in Northern Ireland as well as a significant fishing heritage in areas such as Portavogie. The high volume and standard of entries made judging difficult for those involved, but in the end several pictures stood out.” Prizes in the 4 – 7 years age category were awarded to the winner, Daisy Jones from Kirkistown Primary School and runners up, Lorcan Trainor from St. Marys Primary School and Charlie Sweeney from Portaferry Integrated Primary School. Sophie Brown Kircubbin Integrated Primary School was the winner and Emma Cusick from Kircubbin Integrated Primary School was the runner up in the 8 – 11 years age group. The local schools that took part were: St. Marys Primary School, Portaferry; Portaferry Integrated Primary School; Kircubbin Integrated Primary School; and Kirkistown Primary School.

LOCAL TOURISM BUSINESSES GET GREEN AWARD 24 businesses from Ards and North Down received Green Tourism accreditation - the largest sustainable certification programme of its kind - at an award ceremony held at the Clandeboye Lodge Hotel on Thursday 18 June 2015. Ards and North Down Borough and Newry, Mourne and Down District Councils secured funding from Invest Northern Ireland and the European Union to help businesses gain green accreditation, (at Bronze, Silver or Gold level) and to promote the area as a ‘green’ destination, appealing to the new eco-savvy holidaymakers and tour operators. Four local businesses received Gold awards, nine Silver and 11 Bronze. Another eight local tourism businesses are awaiting accreditation. The awards are recognised by Tourism Northern Ireland. The type of business that won awards include self-caterers, B&Bs, visitor attractions and visitor information offices. Winners will be presented with their award at a special ceremony at the Clandedoye Lodge Hotel – one of the local businesses to receive a Silver award – on 18 June 2105. Details of these and other winners can be found at www.green-tourism.com/visit/northern-ireland/ Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Alan Graham, said: “This is a massive boost for tourism in the area, giving us a major competitive edge and making sure our visibility and reasons to visit are at the front of tourists’ minds. Our plan has been to link our green businesses with the quality of the area’s natural environment making us a prominent destination.” Barnwell Farm Cottages in Greyabbey won a Gold accreditation. The seven four star self-catering cottages originated from farm diversification. Michael Calvert, proprietor of Barnwell Farm Cottages said: “We were delighted to attain the Gold Green Tourism award. We have always been conscious of our impact on the beautiful environment in which we live, but the Green tourism know-how has enabled us to have a more structured approach to our activities that have an environmental impact. Ultimately this will benefit our guests and enhance the enjoyment of their stay at Barnwell Farm Cottages” In total, 102 businesses across County Down won an award. There are 18 Gold awards, 36 Silver and 48 Bronze with 15 tourism businesses still awaiting accreditation. A major green marketing campaign for Strangford Lough and Mourne Mountains is targeting Great Britian markets, with social media links to the Guardian Travel, Classic FM, Facebook and twitter. Many winning businesses have already adapted their web sites and been tweeting their award. HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM HILLSBOROUGH Hillsborough Castle provided a stunning backdrop for Northern Ireland’s celebrations to mark the official birthday of Her Majesty The Queen, with Army Reserve officers and soldiers from 206 (Ulster) Battery, Royal Artillery based at Coleraine and Newtownards firing the traditional 21 Gun Royal Salute. Hillsborough’s booming birthday Salute provided an opportunity for the Reserve Forces & Cadets Association Northern Ireland and SaBRE, the organisation which links the country’s Reservists with employers, to bring representatives of the Northern Ireland’s business community up to date on the evolving role of Reservists.
Colour Sergeant Ian McShane ACF explains the history behind the ceremony to Lynn and Stephen Cairnduff, representing A Cairnduff & Son Ltd (building contractors), Newtownards.
Welcoming guests from the public and private sectors, Colonel Johnny Rollins MBE, Chief Executive of the Reserve Forces & Cadets Association Northern Ireland, spoke of the high value of employer support. He said, “It takes a considerable degree of personal commitment, time, selfless dedication and energy to pursue a part time career with the Reserve Forces, but that burden is much lighter for those who are fortunate enough to have the active support of their employer as well as family backing. We are extremely grateful to those employers who are prepared to show support and flexibility within the constraints of their business environment, helping their employees to balance full-time civilian and part-time military careers. The valuable support which they give to Reservists is genuinely appreciated and we are continuing to work with employers to develop partnerships which will bring benefits to all concerned.” “Benefits of Reserve service certainly flow back to the employer in the form of accredited, industry standard and nationally recognised training and qualifications, alongside military skills such as positive work ethos, confidence, the ability to work under pressure, leadership and communication skills. “The superb turnout and discipline of the Royal Salute show the high standards of military skills which are a trademark of our Reserve Forces, making this piece of pageantry a fabulous showcase for us.”

Summer Safety Now that summer has arrived and we are all looking for a warm summer our pets may not be so keen, somethings to lookout for during the summer months are:
Heat stroke
changes, applying a high factor sunblock can reduce the risk.
A warm humid day can be all it takes for heat stroke to strike. Our pets cannot cool down as quickly as us so can become overheated and dehydrated – which if not treated severe damage can occur and this can become fatal.
Barbecues - don't let your pets eat the leftovers as this can lead to tummy upsets or even pancreatitis. Bones and corn on the cob can even lead to foreign bodies!
Some signs include • Excessive panting • Pacing and distress • Dark dry gums • Lethargy • Vomiting or thick saliva • Dizziness or disorientation and collapse If you suspect your pet has heatstroke place in a cool shaded area. Wrap in cold damp towels and contact your vets immediately. Early detection and prompt action is best! Prevention Never leave your pet in the car – even with the windows open it can become very hot quickly as the inside acts like an oven. Exercise early morning or evening when it is cooler. Keep them in the shade and have a constant supply of cool water. Some pets are more at risk than others eg overweight, elderly, heart or breathing conditions and some breeds. Fly strike is a common problem for rabbits during summer, it can occur if they have moist and dirty hindquarters, this can attract flys to lay eggs in the area. The eggs hatch into maggots which then feed on the rabbits skin. Inspect and clean your rabbits bottom daily. This is a life treating condition so get veterinary treatment as soon as possible. Sunscreen - cats with white ears are at risk of getting sunburnt and this can lead to cancerous

Kennel Cough This is a highly contagious upper respiratory tract infection which is not just transmitted in a kennel environment. It can be caught while a dog is out on a walk in the park, at training classes, shows and kennels as it is an airborne disease. It affects dogs of all ages and the clinical signs include a harsh dry cough. Some dogs may be affected for a number of weeks. Prevention is better than cure as treatment can be a lengthy process of antibiotics. We would strongly recommend vaccination, and as it is a requirement for boarding kennels, during the month of July and August we are offering kennel cough vaccinations

ARE YOU SUNSCREEN SAVVY? It's that time again. Summer is here and SPF is essential. The importance of daily SPF protection, every day, all year round can sometimes be forgotten or overlooked if the sun isn’t shining. Nothing ages skin faster than sun damage so using a sunscreen is the easy, obvious solution. UVA rays (which are the deepest penetrating and the number one cause of skin ageing) are the same strength all year round; even on cloudy, dull and rainy winter days - so SPF should be part of your daily home-care routine each morning. However, what you will be most familiar with is the increased strength of UVB rays during the summer months. These are the rays that burn and increase your risk of skin cancer. Here are three little-known sunscreen facts that can (literally!) save your skin this summer.
1. You’re Not Using Enough You applied sunscreen this morning. Now you’re set for the day, right? Wrong. The majority of people probably using too little sunscreen and apply it too infrequently. No matter which SPF you use, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating.”
2. They’re Not Created Equal The
most
common
sunscreens
are
chemical-based
formulations, containing ingredients that absorb the sun’s rays. Others are mineral-based, and these are gentler to skin while blocking both UVA and UVB rays. In addition to traditional, messy white creams that we all love to hate, you can find sunscreens in many beauty and facial products including moisturisers, primers, foundations and boosters.
3. 30 is Not Twice as Much as 15 SPF15 sunscreen blocks about 93%of UVB rays, compared to SPF30, which blocks 97% , while SPF 50 protects against 98% of UVB rays. Make sure to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects from both types of the sun’s skin-damaging ultraviolet

THE GOOD LIFE THIRD OF A FOUR PART SERIES ON HOME PRODUCE BROUGHT TO YOU BY LOCAL BOY STEPHEN MOORE
PART 3:
KEEPING CHICKENS With the recent success of the short film 'Boogaloo and Graham' it doesn't seem so strange to people that I keep chickens in a small semi-detached garden. I talked about minimal use of land for livestock last month in my article about beekeeping, but keeping chickens actually doesn't take much space in reality. The first question people ask is "don't the chickens wake you up at the crack of dawn with their crowing?". And happily I can say that because I don't have a rooster they are quite quiet pets, only really making noise to announce that they have laid an egg. I have one very proud layer who gets fairly animated after giving us a fresh egg! The next question I hear is "what about all the poo?", which is a big consideration when keeping any animal. Chickens are great processers of food! They convert what I feel is a modest amount of layers pellets, plus some treats, into a fair amount of very good manure. This is great for me as I collect it and dig it into my raised beds over winter as a great fertiliser for my plants. A small willing helper is worth a lot in keeping the chickens tidy, once a week I can guarantee one of my two girls will work alongside me to clean out the run (and even request this as an activity to do). Any pet makes a fair mess but you can pay through the nose for chicken manure fertiliser pellets so this saving, plus the eggs, makes a little bit of housekeeping all worthwhile. Eggs are great. FREE FRESH eggs are even better! Depending on the variety of chicken you decide to keep you can get anywhere up to 320 eggs per year from one hen. They lay roughly every 25 hours and, if you let them, will make collecting their eggs a game of hide and seek. A good, well placed nest box with a dummy egg in the beginning helps to standardise where they lay, meaning you can put your hand to a fresh egg when you need to make an omelette. As a present for my daughter's 7th birthday we recently hatched out 5 chicks from eggs from a breeder. So currently I have a large tub in my house with chicks cheeping all day, it makes us feel spring has truly arrived in our home. These chicks will be fully grown adults within 9 weeks and will start to lay around 20 weeks. Unfortunately I do not have the space for 5 more hens or even 1 rooster (it is hard to tell what they are at this stage) so we thankfully have a few willing adoptive parents for them. Even if you don't like eggs keeping chickens can be rewarding. Ex-battery hens can be rescued and given a new home and no better a pet will you find. They potter about the garden and each one of them has their own character, they amuse us so much. If I was so inclined, raising chickens for the table would be a very easy process, but my girls have named each bird we have so sitting down to some roast 'Poppy' or 'Lotti' isn't so appealing!

SUMMER PROBLEMS
Natural Remedies Better weather and the prospect of holidays make summer a favourite time of the year...for most people; unless, that is, you are unfortunate enough to suffer from allergic reactions to insect bites, prickly heat & travel sickness. 1 in five people are appetizing targets for mosquitos. Taking Vitamin B1 100mg tablets can help to discourage the female mosquito which can target its victim from 50 yards away. The theory is, taking more vitamin B1 than your body requires causes the excess to be excreted through your urine, skin, and sweat. Vitamin B1 produces a skin odor that female mosquitoes seem to find offensive. This vitamin is water-soluble, and there is no danger of toxicity—even at high doses—so it is a safe measure to try. You may also want to forgo bananas during mosquito season, as something about how they are metabolized appears attract mosquitoes. Research also suggests that regularly consuming garlic or garlic capsules may help protect against both mosquito and tick bites. You need to start taking these supplements for a few days before travelling and during your holiday. Natural insect repellents such as incognito spray and incense sticks can help to keep biting insects from biting as well. This is safe for the whole family to use. Prickly heat usually affects fair skinned people and it is a very irritating and unsightly condition. It appears as an itchy red, raised rash of tiny bumps anywhere on the body. Prickly heat can be triggered by sun lotions, shower gels and soaps, to which the individual becomes more sensitive in the heat and sun. We have found that Prickly heat tablets can help to bring quick relief and taken two weeks before exposure to the sun and taken during the holiday, may help to prevent it.
Beta carotene complex capsules are also helpful at
preventing the problem. 2-3 grams of vitamin C in ascorbate form with meals acts as a natural anti-histamine. Travel sickness is another common problem as many of us go on our travels during the summer months. Homoeopathic remedies are very helpful to help this condition as they can be given to people of all ages and they do not cause unpleasant side effects. R52 drops are very beneficial when nausea is the main symptoms. Just put 30-40 drops in a small bottle of mineral water and take sips throughout the journey. Vertigoheel tablets are also very effective for all the unpleasant feelings of travel sickness.
