STUDENT GUIDES

Arden Student Skills: Language and Writing

Undergraduate

Series Editor: Dympna Callaghan, Syracuse University, USA This series offers a new type of study aid, which combines lively critical insight with practical guidance on the critical writing skills students need to develop in order to engage fully with Shakespeare’s texts. Each edition includes an introduction, considering when and how the play was written; a detailed examination and analysis of the individual text; discussion of performance history and critical reception of the work and a ‘Writing Matters’ section in every chapter that clearly links the analysis of Shakespeare’s language to students’ own writing strategies in coursework and examinations.

“This new series from Arden may be aimed at students, but most seasoned professionals have much to learn from it too. In fresh, readable prose, some of today's leading Shakespeare scholars point up the connections between the plays' distinctive verbal textures and their larger concerns and theatrical effects, rarely touching even the most familiar passages without opening up nuanced and illuminating new readings. These handy, punchy books are absolute master-classes in close reading and interpretation.” – Michael Dobson, Director of the Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Professor of Shakespeare Studies, University of Birmingham, UK

Shakespeare and Theory

Upper Undergraduate and Above

Series Editor: Evelyn Gajowski, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA This series provides a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical developments that have dominated Shakespeare studies since the advent of postmodernism, as well as those that are emerging at the present moment. Each volume provides a clear definition of a particular theory; explains its key concepts; surveys its major theorists and critics; situates it in the context of contemporary political, social, and economic developments; analyses its significance in Shakespeare studies; and offers a wealth of suggested resources for further investigation.

Shakespeare and Economic Theory

Shakespeare and Psychoanalytic Theory

David Hawkes

Carolyn E. Brown

This book shows how concepts and concerns that were until recently considered purely economic affected the entire range of sixteenth and seventeenth century life. Using the work of such critics as Jean-Christophe Agnew, Douglas Bruster, Hugh Grady and many others, Shakespeare and Economic Theory traces economic literary criticism to its cultural and historical roots, and discusses its main practitioners. Providing new readings of Timon of Athens, King Lear, The Winter’s Tale, The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure, the Sonnets, Julius Caesar, Macbeth and The Tempest, David Hawkes shows how it can reveal previously unappreciated qualities of Shakespeare’s work.

Although psychoanalytic criticism of Shakespeare is a prominent field of scholarship, the analytic tools, theories, and critics who apply the theories have not been adequately assessed. This book fills that gap. It surveys the psychoanalytic theorists who have had the most impact on Shakespeare studies, clearly explaining the fundamental concepts of their theories, providing concise definitions of key terminology, describing the inception and evolution of different schools of psychoanalysis, and discussing the relationship of psychoanalytic theory (especially in Shakespeare) to other critical theories. It assesses the applicability of the theory to Shakespeare studies and the significance of the resulting readings.

STUDENT GUIDES / REFERENCE Postgraduate and Reference

Arden Shakespeare Dictionaries Series Editor: Sandra Clark, Institute of English Studies, University of London, UK The Arden Shakespeare Dictionaries provide authoritative guides to major subject areas covered by the poetry and plays. The dictionaries provide readers with a comprehensive guide to the topic under discussion, especially its contemporary meanings, and to its occurrence and significance in Shakespeare’s works. Comprehensive bibliographies accompany many of the items. Entries range from a few lines in length to mini-essays, providing the opportunity to explore an important literary or historical concept or idea in depth.

Shakespeare's new in PB Political and Economic Language A Dictionary Vivian Thomas An authoritative A-Z reference guide to the huge range of political and economic terms, concepts and references in Shakespeare. The dictionary reveals the conceptual nucleus of each term and explores the contexts in which it is embedded. The overlap between the political and economic dimensions of a word in Shakespeare's drama is particularly exciting as he is highly attuned to the interactions of these two spheres of human activity and their centrality in human affairs. VIVIAN THOMAS was formerly Lecturer in English at the universities of Birmingham and Warwick, UK. UK January 2015 / US March 2015 416 Pages PB 9781472573384 £25.99 / $44.95 Previously published in HB 9780826479952

Shakespeare's Religious Language A Dictionary R. Chris Hassel Jr. Religious issues and discourse were vastly important in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and such language is one key to an understanding of Shakespeare’s plays and poems. This dictionary discusses just over 1000 words and names in Shakespeare’s works that have some religious denotation or connotation. Its unique word-by-word approach allows equal consideration of the full nuance of each, from ‘abbess’ to ‘zeal’. It also gradually reveals the persistence, the variety, and the sophistication of Shakespeare’s religious usage. R. CHRIS HASSEL JR. is Emeritus Professor at Vanderbilt University, USA. Shakespeare's Universality

textbook

Here's Fine Revolution Kiernan Ryan Through close readings of a wide range of plays and poems, Kiernan Ryan's compelling polemic sets out to reclaim the idea of Shakespeare's timeless universality from reactionary and radical critics alike. Its argument is driven throughout by the belief that at this moment in history the need to recognise and activate the revolutionary potential of Shakespeare's drama is more urgent than ever. KIERNAN RYAN is Professor of English Language and Literature at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK and an Emeritus Fellow of Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, UK.

Hamlet’s Dreams The Robben Island Shakespeare David Schalkwyk

Tragic Cognition in Shakespeare's Othello Beyond the Neural Sublime

LIAM E. SEMLER is Associate Professor in the Department of English and Director of the Medieval and Early Modern Centre at the University of Sydney, Australia.

Hamlet’s Dreams brings together the Robben Island Prison of Nelson Mandela and the prison that is Denmark for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. David Schalkwyk uses the circulation of the so-called ‘Robben Island Shakespeare’, a copy of the Alexander edition of the Complete Works that was secretly circulated, annotated and signed by a group of Robben Island political prisoners in the 1970s, including Mandela, to examine the representation and experience of imprisonment in South African prison memoirs and Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Liam E. Semler This book explores how to achieve innovative approaches to teaching and learning Shakespeare and Marlowe within formal learning systems such as school and university. Suitable for any teacher or academic yearning for fresh and authentic approaches to their discipline.

Paul Cefalu How can recent theories of cognition inform our understanding of Shakespeare’s characters? Tragic Cognition in Shakespeare’s Othello looks at how such theories can enhance our perception of Iago and Othello, as well as enriching the play’s complex accounts of empathy, intentionality, and tragedy. Paul Cefalu argues that Shakespearean characters raise timely questions about the relationship between cognition and consciousness and often defy our assumptions about “normal” cognition.

Shakespeare and Costume

Shakespeare and Religion

Patricia Lennox and Bella Mirabella

Alison Shell

This volume brings together varied essays by leading scholars that consider costume from literary, dramatic, design, performative and theatrical perspectives, as well as interviews with renowned theatre practitioners Jane Greenwood and Robert Morgan. It looks at the historical context of clothing in the plays, exploring topics such as royal self-fashioning and festive livery practices, as well as costume in performance. Drawing on documentary evidence in designers’ renderings, illustrations in periodicals, paintings, photographs, newspaper reviews and actors’ memoirs, the volume also explores costume designs in specific Shakespeare productions from the re-opening of the London theatres in 1660 to the present day. PATRICIA LENNOX is Global Lecturer at New York University, USA. BELLA MIRABELLA is Associate Professor at NYU Gallatin, USA. This book sets Shakespeare in the religious context of his times, presenting a balanced, up-to-date account of current biographical and critical debates, and addressing the fascinating, under-studied topic of how Shakespeare's writing was perceived by literary contemporaries, whose priorities were more obviously religious than his own. It advances new readings of several plays, including Hamlet, King Lear and The Winter's Tale, and draws on underexploited contemporary analogues, ranging from conversion narratives, books of devotion and polemical pamphlets to manuscript drama and emblems. ALISON SHELL is Professor of English at University College London, UK. UK January 2015 / US March 2015 320 Pages PB 9781472568175 £18.99 / $29.95 Previously published in HB 9781904271703

Edited by Farah Karim-Cooper and Tiffany Stern How did Elizabethan and Jacobean acting companies create their visual and aural effects? What materials were available to them and how did they influence staging and writing? What impact did the sensations of theatre have on early modern audiences? How did the construction of the playhouses contribute to technological innovations in the theatre? What effect might these innovations have had on the writing of plays? This is a landmark collection of essays by leading international scholars addressing these and other questions to create a unique and comprehensive overview of the practicalities and realities of the theatre in the early modern period. FARAH KARIM-COOPER Head of Higher Education & Research at Shakespeare's Globe, London, UK. TIFFANY STERN is Professor of Early Modern Drama at the University of Oxford.
