Graphic Design in Urban Environments Robert Harland
This book introduces the idea of a category of designed graphic objects that significantly contribute to the functioning of urban systems, for example clock towers, signs, and screens, street numbers, architectural communication, outdoor publicity, and even markings on a pitch. Robert Harland links the defining properties and configurational patterns that make up small graphic detail to larger symbolic statements by looking at the environment and design, and deconstructing form and context relationships.

Design, Ecology, Politics Joanna Boehnert
Design, Ecology, Politics critiques the ways that the design industry – and even many sustainability discourses within the design industry – perpetuates unsustainable development regimes. When design does engage with issues of sustainability, this engagement typically remains shallow. The situation is made more severe by design cultures that claim to have no politics. Meanwhile, new ecologically informed design methods and tools (such as biomimicry, circular design and lifecycle analysis) hold promise only when incorporated into a larger project of political change.
October 2016 224 pages 30 bw illus 244 x 169mm / 9.6 x 6.7 inches PB 9781472588609 £19.99 / $29.95 HB 9781472588616 £65.00 / $112.00 Bloomsbury Academic
Joanna Boehnert uses case studies of successful and unsuccessful environmental design projects to describe the ways that design functions within the economic system and how design could work beyond capitalism. Her illuminating study integrates ecological and critical positions into design theory to put forward a foundation for ecologically-informed design. Joanna Boehnert is a Visiting Fellow at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science at the University of Colorado, USA.

Street Furniture Design Contesting Modernism in Post-War Britain Eleanor Herring
This study considers how objects – lampposts, post boxes, parking meters, litterbins and signage are designed to populate public spaces. Herring explores the context of a post-war national government, backed by design experts and bodies such as the Council of Industrial Design, keen to propagate ‘good’ modern design in post-war Britain. She traces how the struggle over the design of street furniture exposed deep-seated anxieties about class, taste and power. Herring draws upon archival material and interviews with leading figures in urban design, including the graphic designer Margaret Calvert and industrial designer Kenneth Grange.

Danish Modern Between Art and Design Mark Mussari
A richly illustrated study of the development of mid-century modernist design in Denmark from historical, analytical and theoretical perspectives. Mark Mussari explores the relationship between Danish design aesthetics and the theoretical and cultural impact of Modernism, particularly between 1930 and 1960. He considers how Danish designers responded to early Modernist currents: the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, their rejection of Bauhaus aesthetic demands, their early love of wood and materials, and the tension between cabinet-maker craft and industrial production. Mussari discusses the writings and works of such figures as Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Nanna Ditzel, and Finn Juhl.

Design and National Identity Javier Gimeno-Martínez
This illuminating book offers a detailed account of how national identity and cultural policy have shaped design, while suggesting that such simple formations of the ‘national’ are increasingly unsustainable in an age of globalisation, migration and cultural diversity. China’s Porcelain Capital The Rise, Fall and Reinvention of Ceramics in Jingdezhen Maris Gillette
Maris Gillette explores how state involvement has affected Jingdezhen’s porcelain production, particularly during the 20th century. She considers how the Chinese government has consumed, invested in and managed the industry, and the effects of state intervention on ceramists’ lives, their environment and their works. Gillette traces the transition from imperial rule to communist state ownership, the changing fortunes of the ceramics industry in the 21st century, the decay and decline that accompanied privatisation, and a revival brought about by the manufacturing of highlyprized ‘art porcelain’.

Castor ware–Celadon
26
C | 55
Castor ware Romano-British pottery made at Castor. Northamptonshire. The colour varies from a yellowish grey to a slate blue and is the finest of the Romano-British wares. It was not glazed; decoration was added in the form of freely and elaborately trailed white slip depicting figures, animals and scenes.
Catalyst A substance which assists a chemical or a physical change to take place in another substance. It may speed up the rate of change or enable the change to take place more easily but after the change the catalyst itself is unchanged. The oxides of aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and sodium all act as catalysts assisting the conversion of the quartz phase of silica into the cristobalite phase.
The glaze is very viscous when molten in the firing and prone to crawling. Sudden drops in temperature, a danger with heavy reduction, must be avoided. A more transparent, pale bluish glaze fired on porcelain, like the Chinese Yingqing, is also included as a celadon. See Iron oxide in glazes and Recipe Appendix. The olive green glaze on the bottle illustrated is typical of Northern Song Dynasty celadons. The three bowls by Janet Hamer show the effect of light reduction in the yellow/green bowl, to medium and to heavier reduction in the bluish celadon.
Catenary curve A curve made by a chain hanging from two fixed points. If this line is used in an inverted form it gives an arch which is extremely strong when used in building. A catenary arch used over a kiln chamber directs all the thrust of its weight within the base. There is therefore no need for buttresses or angle iron bracing across the arch. The photographs show a kiln packing inside a catenary arch by Jesse Jones and a kiln built at the International Ceramics Festival by Joe Finch.

The discolouration is due to an area of different composition and is where the slip first hit the mould. At this point, if the mould is very porous, a thin slip breaks up into clay and non-clay particles. The pressure of the slip hitting the mould should be reduced by introducing the slip through a pipe. The fluidity of the slip should be decreased by decreasing the amount of deflocculant used, especially the sodium silicate.
Celsian Barium feldspar. BaO.Al2O3.2SiO2. One of the true feldspars. See Feldspar: types of. It is very rare and available only as hand-picked specimens.
Celsius Celadon A grey-green to grey-blue stoneware and porcelain glaze. The glaze is a feldspathic type. The colour is derived from a very small amount of red iron oxide which in the reducing firing has been changed to black iron oxide. Celadon ware originated in China, developing from dark, grey-green thickly glazed Yue ware to its artistic maturity in the Song Dynasty. The name was derived from Céladon, a shepherd in the 17th-century French play L’Astrée who wore grey-green ribbons and cloak. The classic celadon glaze is thickly applied and semi-translucent. This quality shows best where the glaze gains varying depths in deep and shallow carving thus exploiting the range of tone and colour. The close observation of the shapes, patterns and quiet colours engenders peaceful contemplation.

°C. Centigrade. Degrees Celsius are units on the Centigrade scale where the freezing point and boiling point of water are 0°C and 100°C, respectively. The scale is named after Anders Celsius, the 18th-century Swedish astronomer, who introduced the centigrade thermometer in 1742. A century later. Lord Kelvin took the principle of the centigrade scale and extended it to an absolute scale beyond the temperatures associated with water. See Kelvin.
Ceramic change The change from clay to pot, upon which the whole pottery industry is founded. New Directions in Ceramics From Spectacle to Trace Jo Dahn
What non-traditional activities does the term ‘ceramics’ now encompass? How have these practices developed? Have they been accommodated by institutions? This is a critical overview of contemporary ceramics, identifying influential exhibitions, events and publications. “Informative, stimulating, insightful, and intriguing, this well-illustrated book explores the innovative works of over two dozen significant ceramicists through four pivotal and theoretically well-framed themes.” Susan Surette, NSCAD University, Canada

Subversive Ceramics Claudia Clare
“This is a book that has been needed for a very long time. It examines the intriguing histories of how clay has been used as a medium for dissent, as a commentary on political life and to critique ideas of domesticity ... passionate, lucid, funny, beautifully illustrated and frequently surprising.” Edmund de Waal Claudia Clare examines the relationship between ceramics, social politics, and political movements and the way both organisations and individual artists have used pots - predominantly domestic objects - to agitate among the masses or simply express their ideas. Ninety colour illustrations of various subversive, satirical and campaigning works illustrate her arguments and enliven debate. Claudia Clare explores work by artists from twenty-one different countries, from 500 BC to the present day.

Photography and September 11th Spectacle, Memory, Trauma Jennifer Good
It is impossible to think of September 11th 2001 and not, at the same time, recall an image. The overwhelmingly visual coverage in the world’s media pictured a spectacle of terror, from images of the collapsing towers to fatigued firefighters. Drawing on trauma theory, this book asks whether the prolonged exposure of audiences to images in the media was cathartic or damaging. Additionally it explores how individuals used images to process their feelings in photographic memorial websites, interrogating perceptions that these were an aid to recovery and providing a new understanding of how audiences see and process news photography in times of crisis. Jennifer Good is Senior Lecturer of History and Theory of Photojournalism and Documentary Photography, London College of Communication at the University of the Arts, London, UK.

Photographic History
New Series: Photography, History: History, Photography Series editors: Elizabeth Edwards, De Montfort University, UK Patricia Hayes, University of Western Cape, South Africa Jennifer Tucker, Wesleyan University, USA This field-defining series explores the inseparable relationship between photography and history. Bringing together perspectives from a broad disciplinary base it investigates what wider histories of, for example, wars, social movements, regionality or nationhood, look like when photography and its social and cultural force are brought into the centre of analysis.
Photography, Humanitarianism, Empire Jane Lydon
The first publication in the Photography, History: History, Photography series, this book examines the role of photography in shaping ideas about race and difference in Australia. Covering the period between the 1840s and the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights, the book includes a rich selection of case studies to show how photographic encounters between Aboriginals, missionaries, scientists, photographers and writers fuelled international debates about morality, law, politics and human rights. Drawing on new archival research, it uncovers a story of photography as a complex social force and is essential reading for students and scholars of photography, race and the histories of empire and human rights.

Victorian Photography, Literature and the Invention of Modern Memory Already the Past Jennifer Green-Lewis
Through a study of nineteenth-century literature, this book shows how Victorian photography defined the concept of memory for generations to come, including our own. Tracing the representation and significance of photography in literature until the turn of the twentieth century, it analyses a broad range of texts by inventors, cultural critics, photographers, novelists and poets, and explores how photography influenced the organization and narration of private and public experiences of the past. Invaluable for scholars working at the intersection between photography and literature, this pioneering book will also be of interest to students of Victorian studies, visual culture and intellectual history.

The African Photographic Archive Research and Curatorial Strategies Edited by Christopher Morton and Darren Newbury
African photography has emerged as a focus of research over the last twenty years as a result of a growing interest in postcolonial cultures and a turn towards visual evidence across the humanities and social sciences. This volume explores the many rich photographic collections that have recently come to light and the complex theoretical and practical issues involved in their study. Based on case studies from across the continent dating from the 19th century to the present, chapters consider what constitutes an archive; the value of a critical and reflexive engagement with photographic collections; and the questions of where and what Africa is, as constituted in the archive.

Italian Humanist Photography from Fascism to the Cold War Martina Caruso
With its focus on the human condition, Italian social documentary photography offers a rich source of cultural history. This book analyses a huge range of unpublished and unknown images from the 1930s to 1960s, including the work of 30 Italian photographers and many more from the UK, USA, France and Germany. Setting Italian photography against a global backdrop of social documentary, this study considers broader social issues such as propaganda, aesthetics and religion. It challenges the long-held association of this genre with Neorealist film and literature, instead placing it in context with painting, magazine publishing, and amateur and anthropological photography. Martina Caruso is an Associate Lecturer at the University of the Arts, London, UK.
