Welcome to Bloomsbury Classical Studies & Archaeology Welcome to the new Classical Studies & Archaeology catalogue. As you will have noticed, for the first time this catalogue is coming out under the Bloomsbury name instead of the separate Bristol Classical Press, Continuum, Berg, and Bloomsbury Academic imprints. We wanted to give you some background to this rebranding. In 2008, Bloomsbury decided to invest in building a new academic division. Growth since that decision was taken has been very rapid: we now publish around 1,100 books each year, with a particularly big presence in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and our backlist comprises some 20,000 titles. The purchase of Duckworth’s academic list in 2010 and Continuum’s in 2011 was a key part of this growth. We believe we are stronger as a group, which is why we have taken the strategic decision to adopt the Bloomsbury name for all academic titles that we publish. With effect from 1st September 2012, all new Continuum titles will be published under the Bloomsbury brand. The same applies to all Bristol Classical Press and Berg titles, as of 1st January 2013. This will make it easier for you to find quality classical studies and archaeology publishing, rather than navigating across a number of imprints. The values of Bristol Classical Press, Continuum and other imprints which you have appreciated over the years are already integral to the larger entity that is Bloomsbury. Much has changed over the past 12 months, but we remain as committed to our authors and to publishing the same high quality textbooks, course books, research monographs, reference works, professional and general interest books, journals and online resources.
Publishing in Print and Digital Bloomsbury leads the way in digital publishing, for example with the launch of the Churchill Archive in autumn 2012 (www.churchillarchive.com). Providing an essential research and teaching tool, it has made more than 800,000 pages of key historical documents from the twentieth century available online for the first time. Furthermore, Drama Online (www.dramaonlinelibrary.com) will provide a collection of the most studied, performed and critically acclaimed plays from the last two and a half thousand years.
Highlights In this year’s catalogue, we are excited to announce some new introductory titles: James Morwood’s Hadrian (p.12) in the Ancients in Action series, James Renshaw’s In Search of the Romans (p.11), a companion volume to his popular In Search of the Greeks (p.11) and Ahuvia Kahane’s Homer: A Guide for the Perplexed (p.5). In addition to this, the Bloomsbury (formerly Continuum) Sources in Ancient History (p.14) continues to go from strength to strength, with new sourcebooks ranging from Food and Drink to Ancient Greek and Roman Warfare. Archaeology highlights include Richard Hodges’ Dark Age Economics: A New Audit (p.19) and Susan Oosthuizen’s Tradition and Transformation in Anglo-Saxon England (p.20).
New Distributors – North America We are moving North American sales and distribution to Bloomsbury’s own operation in New York, with effect from 1st May 2013. Until 1st May, please order those titles marked ‘Sold by IPM in the US’ via International Publishers Marketing (details on page 32).
New Website Finally we are delighted to announce the launch of a new global Bloomsbury website: www.bloomsbury.com. This site brings together everything under the Bloomsbury Group, including Continuum and Bristol Classical titles. The site features enhanced academic functionality such as online previews, digital inspection copies, textbook companion sites and online resources. Go to www.bloomsbury.com/academic for more information. We hope you enjoy reading our latest catalogue. Charlotte Loveridge, Senior Commissioning Editor charlotte.loveridge@bloomsbury.com

Euripides: Alcestis Niall W. Slater An accessible introduction which discusses this influential play’s themes, historical context and modern critical responses, and includes a history of its performance and adaptation. Alcestis is Euripides’s earliest complete work and his only surviving play from the period preceding the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War. Currently dominant post-structuralist models of Greek tragedy focus on its ‘oppositional’ role in the discourse of war and public values. This study challenges not only this politicised model of tragic discourse but also both traditional masculinist and more recent feminist readings of the discourse and performance of gender in this remarkable play. Niall Slater’s study explores the reception and afterlife of the play, as well as its main themes, the myth before the play, the play’s historical and social context and the central developments in modern criticism. NIALL SLATER’s research interests are in ancient theatre, the archaeology of the theatre and ancient novel gender studies. Homer: A Guide for the Perplexed Ahuvia Kahane Outlining a series of key themes, ideas, and values associated with Homer and Homeric poetry, Homer: A Guide for the Perplexed explores the question of the formation of the Iliad and the Odyssey – the so-called ‘Homeric Problem’. Among the main Homeric themes which the book considers are origin and form, orality and composition, heroic values, social structure and social bias, gender roles and gendered interpretation, ethnicity, representations of religion, mortality and the divine, memory, poetry and poetics, canonicity and tradition, and the history of Homeric receptions. This is the ideal companion to study this most influential poet, providing readers with some basic suggestions for further pursuing their interests in Homer.

Neo-Latin Poetry in the British Isles Edited by L.B.T. Houghton and Gesine Manuwald Investigation of the Latin poetry produced by British poets from the sixteenth century onwards affords an indispensible insight into a dominant strand in the intellectual, cultural and educational life of the British Isles during this period. At this time, the composition of Latin poetry was a regular feature of school curricula and a popular leisure-time activity of the educated elite. Such examination also sheds light on the poetic principles and practice of major British poets (such as Campion, Cowley, Herbert and Milton) who penned a large quantity of neo-Latin verse in addition to their better-known vernacular works. Statius, Poet Between Rome and Naples Carole E. Newlands This book examines the poetry of Statius (c. 40-96 AD), in relation to significant social and cultural issues of his day, in particular shifting attitudes to Hellenism, gender and Roman imperialism. It also discusses the reception of Statius’ poetry in the Middle Ages, when his reputation was its zenith. Medieval interpretations of Statius’ epics suggest that their popularity rested in part on the prominence they give to female action and the female voice, thus suggesting new expressive and generic possibilities. This is the first systematic study of political imagery in ancient Greek literature, history and thought, tracing it from its appearance, influenced by Near Eastern precursors, in Homer and Hesiod, to the end of the classical period. The historical narrative is complemented by thematic studies of influential complexes of images such as the ship of state, the shepherd of the people, and the state as a household, and enhanced by parallels from later literature and history which illustrate the persistence of Greek concepts in later eras. L.A. Wilding
Taken from the QED series of teach-yourself Latin articles published in the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph, this book aims to give its readers a basic knowledge of Latin in a short space of time. It covers just enough to give a basic understanding of Latin, and to enable readers to read and understand parts of the Bayeux Tapestry, the love poetry of Catullus, or Saint Jerome’s Vulgate. This book also aims to give a deeper understanding of modern European languages, such as English, French, Spanish, and Italian, through an understanding of the ancient language at their heart. PETER JONES is co-founder of The Friends of Classics and one of the best-known figures in the teaching and appreciation of the Classics.

Epic, Novel and the Progress of Antiquity Ahuvia Kahane This book rethinks the characterization of two highly contrastive forms of ancient literary tradition – epic and novel – and re-frames their function as dynamic points of reference in the history of ideas and in our understanding of the interface between antiquity and the modern. Ahuvia Kahane sets out to construct a new understanding of epic and novel in antiquity as part of a more fragile, dynamic framework, governed by intertextuality and openness on the one hand, and by fragmented interpretive traditions on the other. AHUVIA KAHANE is Professor of Greek and Director of the Humanities and Arts Research Centre at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. Adonis The Myth of the Dying God in the Italian Renaissance Carlo Caruso In this detailed treatment of the myth of Adonis in post-Classical times, Carlo Caruso provides an overview of the main texts in Latin and in the vernacular, which secured for the Adonis myth a unique place in the Early Modern revival of Classical mythology. While providing this general outline of the myth’s fortunes in the Early Modern age, the book also addresses three points of primary interest, on which most of the original research included in the work has been conducted. First, the myth’s earliest significant revival in the age of Italian Humanism. Secondly, the diffusion of syncretistic interpretations of the Adonis myth by means of authoritative sixteenthcentury mythological encyclopaedias. Thirdly, the allegorical/political use of the Adonis myth in G.B. Marino’s (1569-1625) Adone. CARLO CARUSO is Head of Italian at the University of Durham, UK. Expurgating the Classics Editing Out in Latin and Greek Edited by Stephen Harrison & Christopher Stray In the first collection to be devoted to this subject, a distinguished cast of contributors explores expurgation in both Greek and Latin authors in ancient and modern times. The major focus is on the period from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, with chapters ranging from early Greek lyric and Aristophanes through Lucretius, Horace, Martial and Catullus to the expurgation of schoolboy texts, the Loeb Classical Library and the Penguin Classics. The contributors draw on evidence from the papers of editors, and on material in publishing archives. The introduction discusses both the different types of expurgation, and how it differs from related phenomena such as censorship.

Paris: The ‘New Rome’ of Napoleon I Diana Rowell Napoleon I employed a myriad of media through which to promote his propaganda and his universal hegemony. Classical Rome was central to his ambitious visions for the transformation of Paris into an imperial metropolis. This volume evaluates how the Roman world influenced Napoleonic Paris, and how Napoleon promoted his authority by appropriating Rome’s triumphal architecture and its associated symbolism. The volume shows how consideration of Louis XIV’s legacy is crucial to understanding the evolution of Napoleon’s fascination with imperial Rome. It also charts Napoleon’s manipulation of the populist rhetoric of Republican France (and Rome) as he moved from being a general fighting for the Revolutionary cause to become the ‘absolute’ ruler of a new empire. The Latin Works and Networks of the Enlightened Dr Heerkens Yasmin Haskell
Classics in the British Colonies of West Africa Barbara Goff
Gerard Nicolaas Heerkens was a cosmopolitan Dutch physician and Latin poet of the eighteenth century. A Catholic, he was in many ways an outsider on his own turf, the peat country of Protestant Groningen, and looked to Voltaire’s Paris, as much as Ovid, in exile, had looked to Rome. An indefatigable traveller and networker, Heerkens mixed freely with philosophers, physicians, churchmen, and antiquarians. This book reconstructs his Latin works and networks, and reveals in the process a virtually unexplored corner of eighteenthcentury culture, the ‘Latin Enlightenment’. YASMIN HASKELL is Cassamarca Foundation Chair in Latin Humanism at the University of Western Australia, Australia. She is a Chief Investigator in the Australian Research Council’s new Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions 1100-1800.

Ovid’s Myth of Pygmalion on Screen
This book is the first to examine the complex and contradictory history of Classics in Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria. It investigates how Classical Studies, as an integral part of colonial education, enforced a notion of cultural inferiority on African subjects, but conversely played an enabling role in nationalist expression. The enquiry is structured around three main questions: how Classics contributed to the formation of a new class of Europeanising West Africans in the late nineteenth century; how Classics was implicated in the ideological struggles of the early twentieth century over the desirability of ‘practical’ or ‘agricultural’ education; and how the uses of Classics changed in the years leading up to independence.

Familiar institutions, rituals, and aspects of everyday modern life are examined to reveal their often surprising classical roots, while the authors explore a selection of the innovations of ancient Greek and Roman civilization to trace how these have developed through history and still affect the world of the twenty-first century. The style is fast-paced and, while drawing on authoritative and current scholarship, the factual information is enlivened with anecdotal details. • Aimed at all with an interest in the ancient world, its social aspects, politics and warfare Hadrian was an extraordinary man who led a rich and varied life. A Spaniard who became emperor at Rome; a soldier who aimed to be a man of peace; homosexual, yet married to a woman who came to hate him. He was the most widely travelled of Roman emperors and his buildings – most famously the Pantheon, Hadrian's wall, his enormous villa at Tivoli and his mausoleum in Rome – tell an important story. This book gives an account of this life that illuminates various relevant and intriguing aspects of experience in the Roman empire in the second century. Alexander the Great Themes and Issues Edward M. Anson Alexander the Great’s life and career are here examined through the major issues surrounding his reign. What were Alexander’s ultimate ambitions? Why did he pursue his own deification while alive? Did he actually set the world in ‘a new groove’ as has been claimed by some scholars? And was his death natural or the result of a murderous conspiracy? Each of the key themes, arranged as chapters, are presented in approximately chronological order. Each chapter includes a discussion of the major academic positions on each issue, and includes a full and up-to-date bibliography and an evaluation of the historical evidence.

Greek Warfare
bestseller
Myth and Realities Hans Van Wees From the soldier’s eye view of combat to the broad social and economic structures which shaped campaigns and wars, ancient Greek warfare in all its aspects has been studied more intensively in the last few decades than ever before. This book ranges from the concrete details of conducting raids, battles and sieges to more theoretical questions about the causes, costs, and consequences of warfare in archaic and classical Greece. It argues that the Greek sources present a highly selective and idealised picture, too easily accepted by most modern scholars, and that a more critical study of the evidence leads to radically different conclusions about the Greek way of war. HANS VAN WEES is Reader in Ancient History at University College London, UK.

Ancient Greek and Roman Warfare
Food and Drink in Antiquity
A Sourcebook
A Sourcebook Matthew Trundle
John Donahue
Warfare was of central importance to ancient societies and recent years have seen an explosion of interest in almost every aspect of ancient warfare. What makes this book different is its focus on continuity and change through the long duration, the detailed commentaries on the evidence presented, and a holistic focus on war, society, economics and religion alongside tactical and strategic considerations. It highlights problems and debates about ancient warfare, providing readers with the source material on key and controversial subjects, such as the origins and development of hoplite warfare or the introduction of the poor into the Roman Republican armies.
Interest in food and drink as an academic discipline has been growing significantly in recent years. This sourcebook is a unique asset to many courses on food as it offers a thematic approach to eating and drinking in antiquity. The chronological scope of the excerpts extends from Homer in the eighth century BCE to the Roman emperor Constantine in the fourth century CE. Each thematic chapter consists of an introduction along with a bibliography of suggested readings. Translated excerpts are then presented accompanied by an explanatory background paragraph identifying the author and context of each passage. Most of the evidence is literary, but additional sources – inscriptional, legal and religious – are also included.

Religion in Barbarian Europe c. 300-700 Marilyn Dunn Challenging the accepted historical belief that they were mere passive recipients of Christian doctrine and providing insights into the way they would initially have apprehended a very different type of religion in the light of their own beliefs and intuitions, the book also examines the gradual adjustments which the Christian Church itself was forced to make across the period in order to consolidate large-scale conversions. Drawing on an exceptionally wide range of source material offering new approaches to evidence drawn from writers such as Tacitus, Ambrose, Augustine, Jordanes, as well as the Indiculus Superstitionum, and Pirmin’s Scarapsus, it supplements these with material drawn from liturgical texts, hagiography, homilies, ecclesiastical and royal legislation and also from European folklore, interpreted in the light of latest theory to provide an authoritative overview of the period. There are several specialist studies of Pliny – his literary style, his relationship with women, his political worries – but no general biography that encompasses all aspects of his life in a systematic way. This book does so by tackling the various aspects of his life in rough chronological order. It covers his life as a lawyer, both in private practice and in state prosecutions; his literary circle; his career in state office and his working relationships with two very different emperors; his background; his property; and his family life.

Britain and Its Empire in the Shadow of Rome The Reception of Rome in Socio-Political Debate from the 1850s to the 1920s Sarah J. Butler “Butler situates different responses to Roman antiquity within changing historical contexts ... In short, Butler reveals how analogies to Rome have been a way of commenting on and debating the state of the nation. The book is fresh, original, and timely.” Margaret Malamud, Professor of History, New Mexico State University, USA Drawing on new primary source evidence, this volume evaluates ancient Rome’s influence on an English intellectual tradition from the 1850s to the 1920s as politicians, scientists, economists and social reformers addressed three fundamental debates of the period – Empire, Nation, and City. The Heroic Rulers of Archaic and Classical Greece Lynette Mitchell This volume takes a fresh look at rulers and ruling in archaic and classical Greece. Challenging orthodox views of ruling in the ancient world, the work breaks down traditional ideas about the relationship between hereditary rule and tyranny. Instead it argues that rule by one man was a heroic activity based upon excellence, arete. It also shows that ruling was dynastic and based on the family or clan, in which rule was in some sense shared. Furthermore, law came to be seen as the ultimate source of sovereignty and legitimate rule was seen as ‘rule under law’. Finally, this book shows that monarchy remained a valid political option from the Early Iron Age through to the Hellenistic period. Memory and Urban Religion in the Ancient World Edited by Martin Bommas, Juliette Harrisson & Phoebe Roy This volume brings together scholars and researchers working on memory and religion in ancient urban environments. Chapters explore topics relating to religious traditions and memory, and the multifunctional roles of architectural and geographical sites, mythical figures and events, literary works and artefacts. One of the factors that shape religion is how fundamental elements are remembered as valuable and therefore preservable. The significance of memory in ancient societies and how it was promoted, prompted, contested and even destroyed is discussed in detail. This volume, the first of its kind, will not only address the main cultures of the ancient world, but also look at urban religious culture and funerary belief, and how concepts of ethnic religion were adapted in new religious environments. MARTIN BOMMAS is senior lecturer in Egyptology at the Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity at the University of Birmingham, UK. JULIETTE HARRISSON is an external lecturer at the University of Birmingham, UK and an associate lecturer with the Open University, UK. PHOEBE ROY is a PhD researcher at the University of Birmingham, UK.
Dreams and Dreaming in the Roman Empire Cultural Memory and Imagination Juliette Harrisson This volume offers a fresh approach to the study of ancient dreams by asking why the Romans considered dreams to be important and worthy of recording. Dream reports from historical and imaginative literature from the high point of the Roman Empire are analysed as objects of cultural memory. The book also introduces the term ‘cultural imagination’, as a tool for thinking about ancient myth and religion, and avoiding the question of ‘belief’, which arises mainly from creed-based religions. The book’s conclusion compares dream reports in the Classical world with modern attitudes towards dreams and dreaming, identifying distinctive features of both the world of the Romans and our own culture. Written Space in the Latin West, 200 BC to AD 300 Peter Keegan, Ray Laurence & Gareth Sears This volume explores the creation of ‘written spaces’ through the accretion of monumental inscriptions and non-official graffiti in the Latin-speaking West between c.200 BC and AD 300. The chapters of this book consider why urban populations created these written spaces and how these spaces in turn affected those urban civilisations. They also examine how these inscriptions interacted to create written spaces that could inculcate a sense of ‘Roman-ness’ into urban populations whilst also acting as a means of differentiating communities from each other. The volume includes new approaches to the study of political entities, social institutions, graffiti and painting, and the differing trajectories of written spaces in the cities of Roman Africa, Italy, Spain and Gaul. Seduction and Power
Leisured Resistance
Antiquity in the Visual and Performing Arts Edited by Silke Knippschild & Marta Garcia Morcillo
Villas, Literature and Politics in the Roman World Michael Dewar
This volume focuses on the reception of antiquity in the performing and visual arts from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century. It explores the tensions and relations of gender, sexuality, eroticism and power in reception. Such universal themes dictated plots and characters of myth and drama, but also served to portray historical figures, events and places from Classical history. The volume deconstructs these traditions and shows how arts of different periods interlink to form and transmit these images to modern audiences and viewers. Drawing on contributions from across Europe and the United States, a trademark of the book is the inclusive treatment of all the arts beyond the traditional limits of academic disciplines.
This is a series of short polemical books on specific topics of current interest in the study of the Classical world. In Leisured Resistance, Michael Dewar examines the varied ways in which cultured Roman aristocrats, of very different periods, used their country estates as retreats in which to compose literature and to escape from politics, while others adapted that same tradition of otium (‘cultured leisure’) to present radical and competing visions of society and literature alike. MICHAEL DEWAR is Professor of Classics at the University of Toronto, Canada.

Jonathan Zarecki proposes three original arguments: firstly, that by the publication of his De Republica in 51 BC Cicero accepted that some sort of return to monarchy was inevitable. Secondly, that Cicero created his model of the ideal statesman as part of an attempt to reconcile the mixed constitution of Rome’s past with his belief in the inevitable return of sole-person rule. Thirdly, that the ideal statesman was the primary construct against which Cicero viewed the political and military activities of Pompey, Caesar and Antony, and himself.

The Hunchback in Hellenistic and Roman Art Lisa Trentin The Hunchback in Hellenistic and Roman Art gives the representations of the figure of the hunchback the attention they have been hitherto denied. In so doing, it provides a much-needed way of rethinking and re-reading images of the ‘Other’ as well as key issues that lie at the very heart of ancient representation. The author takes an art-historical approach, examining three key iconographic features of the corpus of hunchbacks as well as representations of the deformed and disabled in general. This provides fertile ground for a re-assessment of current scholarship on the miniature in ancient art, the hyperphallic nature of ancient art, and the emphasis on the male body in ancient art. Sacred Landscapes in Ancient Egypt Steven Snape Taking the Egypt of Ramesses II as his focal point, Steven Snape explores the holy landscapes of Egypt, both the natural world and the built landscape of temples, tombs and colossal statuary. Even major Egyptian cities were not shaped by the presence of humans who lived there but by their resident gods. A major aspect of the book will be the extensive use of quotations from hieroglyphic texts, translated by the author, to allow the ‘voices’ of the ancient Egyptians to be heard. This is a revelatory and fresh exploration of how the ancient Egyptians reacted to the presence of the divine around them. STEVEN SNAPE is Senior Lecturer in Egyptian Archaeology in the School of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, UK. Ancient Egyptian Technology and Innovation Ian Shaw This book examines the fundamental evidence for many different aspects of change and evolution in ancient Egyptian technology. It includes discussion of the wider cognitive and social contexts and the pace of change in Egypt in comparison with other African, Mediterranean and Near Eastern states. The various sections comprise case-studies analysing those aspects of Egyptian society that made it either predisposed or actively opposed to certain types of conservatism or innovation in material culture, such as the techniques of stone-working, medicine, mummification and monumental construction. The book also includes detailed discussion of the ways in which the practice and development of Egyptian technology interrelated with Late Bronze Age urban society as a whole, using the city at Amarna as a case-study. IAN SHAW is Senior Lecturer in Egyptian Archaeology, University of Liverpool, UK.
Asiatics in Middle Kingdom Egypt Perceptions and Reality Phyllis Saretta The ancient Egyptians had very definite views about their neighbours, some positive, some negative. As one would expect, Egyptian perceptions of ‘the other’ were subject to change over time, especially in response to changing political, social and economic conditions. Thus, as Asiatics became a more familiar part of everyday life in Egypt, and their skills and goods became increasingly important, depictions of them took on more favourable aspects. This investigation by necessity involves a multi-disciplined approach which seeks to combine and synthesize data from a wider variety of sources than drawn upon in earlier studies. By the same token, the book addresses the interests of, and has appeal to, a broad spectrum of scholars and general readers. Hidden Hands Egyptian Workforces in Petrie Excavation Archives, 1880-1924 Stephen Quirke “From any point of view, this book is a detailed and fascinating insight into the Petrie Museum archives, and the social context of Petrie’s excavations.” Egyptian Archaeology This study focuses on the great archive that records the work of Flinders Petrie in Egypt, first in 1880-1882 under a nationalist government, and then during the English military occupation that lasted from 1882 until after his death in 1942. The archive brings to life the main Egyptian supervisors who enabled Petrie to function as an archaeologist, while payroll lists record the names of hundreds more men and children on the full labour force. None of these Egyptians have received recognition as an archaeologist in history-writing, foreign or Egyptian. This archival ground offers a new open resource to those within Egypt and elsewhere opposed to the neo-colonial regime of the disciplines.

The Archaeology of Race The Eugenic Ideas of Francis Galton and Flinders Petrie Debbie Challis The Archaeology of Race looks at how racial and social theory was applied practically by British historians and archaeologists to interpret the past during the late nineteenth century, particularly through the use of material culture from ancient Egypt and Greece. It specifically focuses on the ideas of Francis Galton and the role of the Egyptologist Flinders Petrie in applying these (and sometimes disagreeing with them) in his work in Egypt, drawing from archives and objects from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and the Galton collection at UCL. It also details the working relationship between Galton and Petrie and places their ideas in historical context. Tradition and Transformation in Anglo-Saxon England Archaeology, Common Rights and Landscape Susan Oosthuizen Current explanations for the origins of Anglo-Saxon England are generally based on the premise that older forms of social organisation did not survive on any scale into the post-Roman period. The argument presented here suggests a new paradigm. It proposes that some elements of the old Romano-British – perhaps even prehistoric – forms of collective social organisation persisted into post-Roman centuries, and goes on to argue that the impact of dynamic interaction between middle Anglo-Saxon lordly innovation and traditional social relations persisted not only in the medieval landscape but also in English culture more generally. Archaeologies of Conflict John Carman The overall purpose of the book is to encourage proponents and practitioners of Conflict Archaeology to consider what it is for and how to develop it in the future. The central argument is that, at present, Conflict Archaeology is effectively divided into closed communities who do not interact to any large extent. These separate communities are divided by period and by nationality, so that a truly international Conflict Archaeology has yet to emerge. These divisions prevent the exchange of information and ideas across boundaries and thereby limit the scope of the field. This book discusses these issues in detail, clearly outlining how they affect the development of Conflict Archaeology as a coherent branch of archaeology. JOHN CARMAN is Senior Lecturer in Heritage Value, Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity, Birmingham University, UK, Co-Director of the Bloody Meadows Project, and convenor of ESTOC: European Studies of Terrains of Conflict. Archaeology and State Theory Subjects and Objects of Power Bruce Routledge After neo-evolutionism, how does one talk about the premodern state? Over the past two decades archaeological research has shifted decisively from checklist identifications of the state as an evolutionary type to studies of how power and authority were constituted in specific polities. Developing Gramsci’s concept of hegemony, this book provides an accessible discussion of general principles that serve to help us understand and organise these new directions in archaeological research. Throughout this book, conceptual issues are illustrated by means of case studies drawn from Madagascar, Mesopotamia, the Inca, the Maya, Egypt and Greece. Shaky Ground Context, Connoisseurship and the History of Roman Art Elizabeth Marlowe The recent crisis in the world of antiquities collecting has prompted scholars and the general public to pay more attention than ever before to the questions of archaeological findspots and collecting history for newly found objects. When it comes to famous works that have been in major museums for many generations, such questions are rarely asked. This book argues that the question of archaeological origins should be the first asked, not only by museum acquisitions boards, but by scholars as well. The Anthropology of Hunter-Gatherers Key Themes for Archaeologists Vicki Cummings This book provides a basic introduction to key debates in the study of huntergatherers, specifically from an anthropological perspective, but designed for an archaeological audience. Among the diverse range of peoples studied, there are a number of recurrent themes, including not only the way in which people make a living (hunting, gathering and fishing) but also striking similarities in other areas of life such as belief systems and social organisation. These themes are described and then explored through archaeological case studies. The overarching theme throughout the volume is the use of ethnographic analogy, and how archaeologists should be critical in its use. Dark Age Liguria Regional Identity and Local Power, c. 400-1050 Ross Balzaretti Dark Age Liguria surveys the history of the Liguria region from c. 400 to c. 1050 AD, to provide a detailed case study of what happened here as Roman imperial rule ended. The book pulls together all the surviving evidence, written, archaeological, artistic and ecological, to propose that, in contrast with later periods, Ligurians looked north as much as they gazed out to sea. Genoese history under Byzantines, Lombards, Carolingians and Ottonians is compared with that of other coastal settlements, including Albenga, Noli, Perti and Savona and the less-studied but fascinating inland valleys, the Aveto, Polcevera, Stura and Vara. The book draws also on more than 15 years of fieldwork in and around the small town of Varese Ligure (La Spezia province) to suggest some new methods for investigating the Dark Age past. ROSS BALZARETTI is Associate Professor, Faculty of Arts, University of Nottingham, UK. He was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews, UK in 2010-2011. The Role of the Bishop in Late Antiquity Conflict and Compromise Andrew Fear, Mar Marcos & José Fernández Ubiño Late Antiquity witnessed a major transformation in the authority and power of the Episcopate within the Church, with the result that bishops came to embody the essence of Christianity and increasingly overshadow the leading Christian laity. The rise of Episcopal power came in a period in which drastic political changes produced long and significant conflicts both within and outside the Church. This book examines these problems in depth, looking at bishops’ varied roles in both causing and resolving these disputes, including those internal to the church, those which began within the church but had major effects on wider society, and those of a secular nature. ANDREW FEAR is Lecturer in Classics, University of Manchester, UK. MAR MARCOS is Senior Lecturer in Ancient History, University of Cantabria, Spain. JOSÉ FERNÁNDEZ UBIÑO is Professor of Ancient History, University of Granada, Spain. UK February 2013 • US May 2013 256 pages HB 9781780932170 • £70.00 / $120.00

Cultural Transfer in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, 400-800 AD Edited by Andreas Fischer & Ian Wood
Pagan Goddesses in the Early Germanic World Eostre, Hreda and the Cult of Matrons Philip A. Shaw
Based on close analyses of contemporary texts, and backed by an examination of the origins of the elements transferred and of the process of transmission, the contributors to this volume focus on the perception and adaptation of knowledge and cultural elements in the West. Taking a variety of approaches, they shed light on the changing lines of communication between the Byzantine empire and other parts of the Mediterranean, on the one hand, and the Burgundian, Frankish and Anglo-Saxon realms and the Papacy on the other.

Image, Text, Exegesis Iconographic Interpretation and the Hebrew Bible Edited by Izaak J. de Hulster & Joel M. LeMon Since the 1970s, biblical scholars have been turning increasingly to iconography as a source for understanding the religion, history and literature of the Ancient Near East. The essays in this volume tackle two thorny issues: 1) how images reflect the cultures that produce them and 2) the nature of the relationship between images and texts, both within discrete cultures and among different cultures. Until now, there have been relatively few methodologically self-conscious treatments of ancient iconography and its relationship to the biblical text. This volume addresses a clear need for establishing transparent and consistent methods for iconographic work among biblical scholars.

Focusing Biblical Studies: The Crucial Nature of the Persian and Hellenistic Periods Essays in Honor of Douglas A. Knight Edited by Alice Hunt & Jon L. Berquist This volume makes a positive intervention into maximalist/minimalist debates about Israelite historiography by pointing to the events that happened during the Persian and Hellenistic periods. The entire volume is set within the context of Doug Knight’s contributions, which have encouraged a rigorous social-scientific and tradition-historical approach to the Hebrew Bible and ancient Israel in general. The Presocratics and the Supernatural Magic, Philosophy and Science in Early Greece Andrew Gregory This book examines the relationship between magic, philosophy and the investigation of nature in presocratic Greece. Did the presocratic thinkers, often praised for their rejection of the supernatural, still believe in gods and the divine and the efficacy of magical practices? Did they use animism, astrology, numerology and mysticism in their explanations of the world? This book analyses the evidence in detail and argues that we need to look at each of these beliefs in context. ANDREW GREGORY is Reader in History of Science in the Department of Science and Technology Studies, University College London, UK. The Journal of Archaeology, Consciousness and Culture Editors
Paul Devereux Royal College of Art, UK, John Baker Moorpark College, USA, Neil Mortimer Former Editor, 3rd Stone, Johannes Loubser Stratum Unlimited, USA and University of Wiltwatersand, SA, George Nash Bristol University, UK
About the Journal Peer-reviewed, lively and highly interdisciplinary, Time & Mind presents new perspectives on landscape, monuments, people and culture. The journal features scholarly work addressing cognitive aspects of cross-related disciplines such as archaeology, anthropology and psychology that can shape our understanding of archaeological sites, landscapes and pre-modern worldviews. It also explores how modern minds create images of the past, and addresses how new findings about prehistory can inspire current research on the brain and consciousness.
