Asiatics in Middle Kingdom Egypt Perceptions and Reality Phyllis Saretta, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA Adapted by adaptor
"An altogether admirable book … Above all it is a book that invites to be (intensively) used." Classical Journal The ancient Egyptians had very definite views about their neighbours (some positive, some negative) and these perceptions were subject to change over time. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, and combining and synthesizing data from a wider variety of sources than drawn upon in earlier studies, this book documents and analyses in detail the evolution of Egyptian attitudes to Asiatics, and particularly West Semites, living inside and outside Egypt in the Middle Kingdom, as reflected in Ancient Egyptian language, literature, art and material culture. Periclean Athens P. J. Rhodes, University of Durham, UK Adapted by adaptor
In the second and third quarters of the fifth century BC, when Athens became both politically and culturally dominant in the Greek world, Pericles became the leading figure in the city’s public life. This was also the period when Athenian tragedy became the principal Greek poetic form, when a series of temples and other buildings, on Athens’ acropolis and elsewhere, attracted architects, builders and sculptors to Athens, and when Athenian red-figure pottery reached new heights of skill in the scenes painted on it. This concise and accessible introduction guides students through the key aspects of this moststudied period of ancient Greek history, focusing on the major developments, political and cultural, that took place under Pericles. The Religious Worlds of the Laity in Late Antique Gaul Lisa Kaaren Bailey, University of Auckland, New Zealand Adapted by adaptor
"…an exemplary study..." Bryn Mawr Classical Review This is the first volume to explore the role of the laity in the key region of Gaul, through history, archaeology and theology. The acts and experiences of clergy and laity are compared: the former themselves constructed the category of 'the laity', and shaped lay religious experience by this need to create categories; the laity experienced and interpreted their religion differently according to gender, location, piety and social status, and their decisions shaped the nature of the Church and of their faith. Ancient Egyptian Scribes A Cultural Exploration Niv Allon, Metropolitan Museum of Art, USA & Hana Navratilova, Independent Scholar, USA Adapted by adaptor
Ancient Egyptian Scribes traces ten key biographies of figures who all claimed the title of 'scribe' at some point during their career. These are the Egyptians who ran the state and formed the meritocratic system of local administration and government. Case studies look at accountants, hieroglyphic draughtsmen, scribes with military and dynastic roles, the authors of graffiti and the scribes who interacted in different ways with pharaohs and other leaders. Assuming no previous knowledge of ancient Egypt, the various roles and identities of scribes are presented in a concise and accessible way, offering structured information on their cultural identity and self-presentation, and providing readers with insight into the making of Egyptian written culture. Female Mobility and Gendered Space in Ancient Greek Myth Ariadne Konstantinou, Bar-Ilan University, Israel Adapted by adaptor
Drawing primarily on close readings of Archaic and Classical literary sources, Female Mobility and Gendered Space in Ancient Greek Myth explores a broad collection of female figures in Greek myth. It highlights aspects of female mobility and the construing of space in these narratives, thus offering the first booklength consideration of the intersection of gender, mobility and space in Greek myth. The book investigates mythical narratives within their social context, seeking to reveal expressions of cultural ideology on gendered mobility. Close analysis of female characters’ movement in their mythical landscapes offers a substantial contribution to our scholarly understanding of social attitudes towards female mobility in Greek culture. Carl A. Shaw, New College of Florida, USA Adapted by adaptor
The first book-length study of the only complete, extant satyr play, which gives a theatrical version of Odysseus’ encounter with the monster Polyphemus. Shaw begins with a precis of the history of the genre, following its development from early sixth-century religious processions to Euripides’ late fifth-century Cyclops. He shows that Euripides blends satyr drama’s humorous, cultic elements with a more refined and modern 'tragic' style. He also offers a comprehensive analysis of the play’s plot and performance, using the text (alongside ancient visual evidence) to determine the original viewing experience: the masks, costumes, action, gestures and emotions.

Antigone is one of the most influential and thought-provoking of all Greek tragedies. An introduction discussing the nature of the community for which Antigone was written is followed by a collection of essays by 12 leading academics from across the world. They draw together many of the themes explored in Antigone, from Sophocles’ use of mythology, his contemporaries’ reactions and later reception, to questions of religion and ritual, family life and incest, ecology and the environment. The Politics of Youth in Greek Tragedy Gangs of Athens Matthew Shipton, Independent Scholar, UK Adapted by adaptor
This analysis of politics and youth in tragedy explores how tragic drama reflects fluctuating attitudes towards young people at a highly turbulent time in the history of Athens. Focusing on famous plays, such as Antigone and Bacchae, alongside lesser-known tragedies such as Heraclidae and Orestes, compelling evidence is presented to show that the complex and often paradoxical views we hold about youth today can also be found in the ancient society of classical Athens. Seneca: Hercules Furens
The Codex Fori Mussolini
Neil Bernstein, Ohio University, USA

Hercules is the best-known character from classical mythology. Seneca’s play Hercules Furens presents the hero at a moment of triumph turned to tragedy. Hercules returns from his final labor, his journey to the Underworld, and then slaughters his family in an episode of madness. This play exerted great influence on Shakespeare and other Renaissance tragedians, and also inspired contemporary adaptations in film, TV, and comics. Aimed at undergraduates and non-specialists, this companion introduces the play’s action, historical context and literary tradition, critical reception, adaptation, and performance tradition. Art Nouveau and the Classical Tradition Richard Warren, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK Adapted by adaptor
This new study shows how in expressing many of their most essential concerns – sexuality, death and the nature of art – its artists drew heavily upon classical literature and the iconography of classical art. Warren challenges the conventional view that Art Nouveau's adherents turned their backs on Classicism in their quest for new forms. Many well-known artists are considered, such as Gustav Klimt, Aubrey Beardsley and Louis Comfort Tiffany, as well as less wellknown painters, sculptors, jewellers and architects. CLASSICAL RECEPTION
Imagines: Classical Receptions in the Visual and Performing Arts
Naoise Mac Sweeney, University of Leicester, UK & Jan Haywood, University of Leicester, UK Adapted by adaptor
This book explores the way that artists, poets, dramatists, historians and scientists have responded to the Iliad, considering how the myth of the Trojan War has been reimagined over the ages. Through a series of detailed case studies it teases out several key themes from conflict to causes, heroism to hope. Ancient and modern aspects are paired by genre, with the two authorial voices of Haywood and Mac Sweeney engaging in a dialogue across each pair of studies. The result is a broad-ranging investigation into Iliadic receptions, which begins by reflecting on Homer’s epic itself as a work of reception and concludes with the Homeric resonances in the 21st century. This book provides an overview of Dura-Europos and its history, situating Dura-Europos in its geographical, historical, and intellectual contexts, tracing the story of the site and its afterlives in scholarly and popular perceptions. Based on the author’s work excavating at the site with the Mission Franco-Syrienne d’Europos-Doura and extensive archival research, the volume draws together threads of Dura-Europos’ legacy and significance, and discusses how the multicultural, religiously plural and polyglot site has been recovered and shaped by archaeology. "This treasure trove of personal endorsements ... tells a story of a remarkable life." Ancient Egypt Taking the letters of recommendation pasted inside an astonishing discovery, the ‘Testimonial Book of Dragoman Solomon N. Negima’, and first-hand accounts of the travellers themselves, this book tells the stories of 19th-century tourists such as intrepid Victorian female traveller, Ellen E. Miller, and African-American minister, Rev. Charles T. Walker, who had been born into slavery. Negima’s own fascinating story also emerges, allowing us an insight into the lives of individuals whose histories would otherwise be lost to us, and a new perspective on the history of travel in the Middle East. Fishing and Shipwreck Heritage Marine Archaeology's Greatest Threat?
Empowering Communities through Archaeology and Heritage
Sean A. Kingsley, Wreck Watch International, UK Adapted by adaptor
"This book will educate readers about this threat to our marine cultural heritage and encourage them to advocate proper protections." The Classical Journal For 250 years encrusted wonders have been turning up in fishermen’s nets. The profound threat of the global fishing industry remains a black hole in marine archaeology, poorly understood and unmanaged. This book presents the first global analysis of the threat of bottom fishing to underwater cultural heritage, examining the diversity, scale and implications on endangered finds and sites. Throughout, the key questions of whether it is too late to save the planet’s three million wrecks and how sustainable management is achievable are debated. The Role of Local Governance in Economic Development Peter G. Gould, American University of Rome, Italy Adapted by adaptor
In this book, Peter G. Gould seeks to identify the essential success factors associated with a growing practice in archaeology: the sponsorship by archaeologists or heritage managers of local projects such as museums, tourism businesses, crafts cooperatives and similar activities within communities adjacent to archaeological or heritage sites. Drawing together theoretical insights from economics, political science, tourism scholarship, complexity scholarship, and non-profit best practices, the book presents a model for community governance structures and illustrates the workings of that model through four case studies. Anaximander A Re-assessment Andrew Gregory, University College London, UK Adapted by adaptor
Anaximander's philosophy encompasses theories of justice, cosmogony, geometry, cosmology, zoology and meteorology and this volume draws together these wide-ranging threads into a single, coherent picture of the man, his worldview and his legacy to the history of thought. Arguing that Anaximander's statements are both beyond dispute and based on observation of the world around him, Gregory examines how the theories are consistent with and supportive of each other. The work explores how these theories relate to early Greek thought and in particular conceptions of theogony and meterology in Hesiod and Homer. Olympiodorus: On Plato First Alcibiades 10–28 Edited by Michael Griffin, University of British Columbia, Canada Adapted by adaptor
"A labor of love … G.’s translation ... is of the highest quality." International Journal of the Platonic Tradition Olympiodorus, possibly the last non-Christian teacher of philosophy in Alexandria, delivered 28 lectures as an introduction to Plato. Olympiodorus' pupils are beginners, able to approach the hierarchy of philosophical virtues, like the aristocratic playboy Alcibiades. For us, these lectures can serve as an accessible introduction to late Neoplatonism. Following the publication in 2014 of the first nine lectures, here Lectures 10–28 are translated into English with an introduction and comprehensive commentary notes. Sophist Kings Persians as Other in Herodotus Vernon L. Provencal, Acadia University, Canada Adapted by adaptor
"[A] provocative thesis… Original and stirring, this argument has moments of brilliance…" Bryn Mawr Classical Review This study highlights the consistency with which the Persians are depicted as sophists and explores how the ideology that Herodotus ascribes to the Persians comes directly from 5th-century sophists, whose arguments served to justify Athenian imperialism. The volume connects the ideological conflict between panhellenism and imperialism in Herodotus’ contemporary Greece to his representation of the past conflict between Greek freedom and Persian imperialism. Detecting a universal paradigm, Sophist Kings argues that Herodotus was suggesting the Athenians should regard their own empire as a betrayal of the common cause by which they led the Greeks to victory in the Persian wars. The Poverty of Eros in Plato’s Symposium Lorelle D. Lamascus, St. Mary’s University, USA Adapted by adaptor
Offering an innovative new approach towards Eros and the concept of eros in the Symposium. Lamascus argues that Plato's depiction of Eros as the child of Poverty (penia) and Resource (poros) is central to understanding the nature of love. The book shows that poverty provides an appropriate directing of eros towards eternal and unchanging goods (and away from an age geared towards material items and wealth), and thus that Plato’s mythical treatment of Eros in the Symposium lays the groundwork for understanding the soul’s embrace of poverty as a way of living, loving, and knowing. Research and Practice around the World

In recent years historians across the world have sought to transnationalize and globalize their perspectives on the past, but despite these efforts, the debates surrounding this movement have remained rather provincial in scope. Global History, Globally addresses this lacuna by surveying the state of global history in different world regions. Its chapters survey the practice of global history on all continents, review research in four core fields of global history and consider the problems that global historians have contended with. Collectively, they provide an unprecedented survey of the most dynamic field in the discipline of history. Histories on Screen
Theories of History
The Past and Present in Anglo-American Cinema and Television Edited by Sam Edwards, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, Faye Sayer, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK & Michael Dolski, Joint Prisoner of War-Missing in Action Accounting Command’s Central Identification Laboratory, USA Adapted by adaptor
How, as historians, should we ‘read’ a film? Histories on Screen answers this and other questions in a crucial volume for any history student. The book begins with a theoretical section that explores the ways in which films can be analysed and interrogated as primary sources, secondary sources or indeed as both. The larger second section then offers engaging case studies which put this theory into practice. Documentaries, films and television from Britain and the United States are examined and topics including gender, class, race, war, propaganda, national identity and memory.
History Read across the Humanities Edited by Michael J. Kelly, State University of New York at Binghamton, USA & Arthur Rose, University of Durham, UK Adapted by adaptor
This book considers ‘history’ through its supplementary function to the field rather than the ground of a study, bringing new insights into historical thinking and historiography across the humanities. It fosters engagement from around the disciplines in historical thinking and invites historians and philosophers of history to see the impact of their work outside of their own specific fields. Essays in this volume discuss music history, linguistics, dance studies, paintings, film and archaeology. This book is essential reading for those interested in the practice of history, philosophy and the humanities more broadly. Churchill's Army
The Statesman as Artist
1939–1945 The Men, Machines and Organisation
David Cannadine Adapted by adaptor
Sir Winston Churchill was 40 before he discovered the pleasures of painting. Over a period of 48 years he produced more than 500 pictures, finding in art a welcome respite from politics and the ‘Black Dog’ of depression. This book, illustrated in full colour, contains his paintings and art reviews, some never before reprinted, his address to the Royal Academy and two essays by Augustus John and John Rothenstein. It is prefaced by a substantial introduction which draws on a wide variety of material from both the Churchill and Royal Academy archives, offering the most wide-ranging account yet written of Churchill the artist. Churchill and Orwell The Fight for Freedom
Stephen Bull Adapted by adaptor
Winston Churchill is inextricably linked with the victorious British Army of 1939 to 1945. Yet hindsight, propaganda, and the imperative of the defeat of Hitler and Imperial Japan, have led to a tendency to oversimplify the image of Churchill the war leader, and ‘his’ Army. In this comprehensive book, Stephen Bull examines every aspect of the British Army during the Second World War, and considers in detail the strengths and weaknesses of an organisation that was tested to its limits on many fronts but made an immense contribution to the successful Allied outcome. Thomas E. Ricks Adapted by adaptor
A New York Times bestseller. Despite differing political views, Churchill and Orwell had in common their commitment to fighting for individual freedom and democracy through their vision and inspired action. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas E. Ricks argues in his dual-biography that these extraordinary men in British history are especially relevant today, revealing how they rose from unpopular positions to triumph over fascism and totalitarianism. Churchill may have played the larger role in Hitler’s defeat, but Orwell’s famous books 1984 and Animal Farm defined the stakes of the Cold War and continue to inspire. Soho in the Eighties Christopher Howse Adapted by adaptor
The 1980s in Soho saw the brilliant flowering of a daily tragi-comedy in pubs like the Coach and Horses or the French and drinking clubs like the Colony Room. A cast less probable than any soap opera's extemporised a sharp, alcohol-fuelled script. Some were famous – Francis Bacon, Jeffrey Bernard, Tom Baker or Daniel Farson – others fell into obscurity. The bite beneath the hilarity came from lost spouses, lost jobs, homelessness and death. To Christopher Howse, caught up in high and low drama, Soho was home. While that Soho lasted, the time in those smoky rooms always seemed to be half past ten, not long to closing time. Depicted unforgettably as ‘Crookback Dick’, Shakespeare’s hunchbacked fiend, the murderer of the Princes in the Tower and the warrior vanquished at the Battle of Bosworth Field, Richard III is one of England’s most enigmatic monarchs. 1938: Modern Britain Social Change and Visions of the Future Michael John Law, University of Westminster, UK Adapted by adaptor
In 1938: Modern Britain, Michael John Law demonstrates that our understanding of life in Britain just before the Second World War has been almost completely overshadowed by the political events of the year. By considering topics as diverse as the opening of a new style of pub, the launch of a new magazine, the beginning of television and the stirrings of what was to become the NHS, he reveals a Britain that was on the path to becoming a modern nation, a process that was stopped in its tracks by war and the austerity that followed. This book is a unique reassessment of the social and cultural scene in inter-war England. By combing over the everyday practices of working-class girls in the period, focusing on the village of Bermondsey and including oral testimonies, Milcoy demonstrates the persistence and ingenuity with which these teenagers gained access to commercial leisure culture, from hairstyles and fashionable dress to films, music and dances. She shows how this access transformed the way young women rehearsed and contested their identities so that play - rather than work - became the primary mechanism for defining subjectivity and constructing femininity. Gender, Culture and Politics in England, 1560-1640 integrates social history, politics and literary culture to provide revealing insights into the lives of men and women in early modern England. Susan D. Amussen and David E. Underdown examine familiar chaotic characters from the period, such as scolds, cuckolds and witches, and consider the disorder they create and how they turn the ordered world around them upside down in a very specific, gendered way. Using case studies from theatre, civic ritual and witchcraft, the book demonstrates how the idea of an upside down world permeates the mentality of early modern England. Cecily Duchess of York
Women's Voices in Ireland examines the letters and problems sent in to two Irish women’s magazines in the 1950s and 60s. Although women’s representation in politics and public and their workforce participation remained low in this period, women who came of age from the late 1950s experienced a freedom which their mothers and aunts had never known. For example, diary and letters pages and problem pages in magazines enabled women to express their opinions. Clear’s analysis provides a unique insight into one of the few forums for female expression in Ireland during this period. It traces this process over the course of eight centuries, from its earliest roots in Roman ethnography to its reinvention in the monasteries of ninth-century Saxony. Building on recent scholarship, this study emphasises not just the constructed and openended nature of barbarian identity, but also the crucial role played by texts as instruments and resources of identity-formation. Networks of Knowledge in the Early Middle Ages Sven Meeder, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands Adapted by adaptor
The Carolingian period represented a Golden Age for the abbey of St Gall, an Alpine monastery in modern-day Switzerland. Among its books are several of Irish origin, while others contain works of learning originally written in Ireland. This study explores the practicalities of the spread of this Irish scholarship to St. Gall and the reception it received once there. In doing so, this book for the first time investigates a part of the network of knowledge that fed this important centre of learning with scholarship and offers a new viewpoint on the spread and reception of Irish learning in the Carolingian period.

Reading the Bible in the Middle Ages Edited by Jinty Nelson, King's College London, UK & Damien Kempf, University of Liverpool, UK Adapted by adaptor
"This is an excellent collection of essays demonstrating a wide variety of ways in which medieval people experienced and used Scripture." William T. Flynn, University of Leeds, UK For earlier medieval Christians, the Bible was the book of guidance above all others, and the route to religious knowledge, used for all kinds of practical purposes, from divination to models of government in kingdom or household. This book’s focus is on how medieval people accessed Scripture by reading, but also by hearing and memorizing sound-bites from liturgy, chants, hymns, or sermons. Time, place and social class determined access to these varied forms of Scripture and this book’s contributors probe readers’ motivations, intellectual resources and religious concerns. This new edition brings David Williamson’s study fully up-to-date and now contains a greater coverage of social history, as well as maps, illustrations and a useful glossary. The book analyses the British presence in Germany from the armistice until the end of the Rhineland occupation in 1930, drawing widely on a range of primary sources to explore the problems facing British military and civil officials, their attitudes towards the Germans and their relations with their allies. The book also examines the everyday lives of the British people in Germany and their interactions with the Germans.
Sexual crime, past and present, has always been close to the headlines. How those crimes are punished, policed and treated by society, however, has changed radically over time. This book traces the evolution of medical interest in the mental state of those convicted of sexual crime over the course of the century. Using a range of under-utilized material, including medical and criminological texts, trial proceedings, government reports, newspapers, and autobiographies and memoirs, Janet Weston offers powerful insights into changing attitudes towards sexuality, crime, and normal and healthy sexual behaviour.

Russian Orthodoxy and the Russo-Japanese War Betsy Perabo, Western Illinois University, USA Adapted by adaptor
Charismatic Words from the 18th to the 21st Centuries This book examines the rhetorical force of certain key words in the discourses of Russian state, political thought, and literature. By exploring the usage of these words in a wide range of texts, Richard Wortman provides glimpses into the ideas and feelings of leading figures and thinkers in Russian history, from Peter the Great to Alexander Herzen and Nicholas Berdiaev, offering a specific focus on Russian political history.
Betsy Perabo looks at the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5 through the unique concept of an ‘interreligious war’ between Christian and Buddhist nations, focusing on the figure of Nikolai of Japan, the Russian leader of the Orthodox Church in Japan. Drawing extensively on Nikolai’s writings alongside other Russianlanguage sources, the book provides a window into the diverse Orthodox Christian perspectives on the war. Writings by Russian soldiers, field chaplains, military psychologists, and leaders in the missionary community contribute to a rich portrait of a Christian nation at war.

Gender and French Identity after the Second World War, 19441954 Engendering Frenchness Kelly Ricciardi Colvin, Brown University, USA Adapted by adaptor
The enfranchisement of women in Charles de Gaulle’s France in 1944 is considered a potent element in the nation’s self-crafted, triumphant World War Two narrative. Colonial Food in Interwar Paris The Taste of Empire Lauren Janes, Hope College, USA Adapted by adaptor
“An absolutely fascinating study of the impact of colonial food on France between the wars […] The book emphasizes beautifully how food both defines Frenchness [and] is used to exclude the other.” Ken Albala, University of the Pacific, USA In the First World War, colonial produce became an increasingly important element of the French diet. This book examines women’s activism during the post-war revolutions and counter-revolution. It describes the dynamic of the period’s competing, liberal, Christian-conservative, socialist, radical socialist, and right-wing nationalistic women’s movements and pays special attention to women activists of the Right. Judith Szapor convincingly argues that illiberal ideas on family and gender roles, tied to the nation’s regeneration and tightly woven into the fabric of the interwar period’s right-wing, extreme nationalistic ideology, greatly contributed to the success of Miklós Horthy’s regime. Alternative Histories of the Self A Cultural History of Sexuality and Secrets, 1762-1917 Anna Clark, University of Minnesota, USA Adapted by adaptor
Alternative Histories of the Self investigates how people twisted and re-imagined the idea of the unique self in the period from 1760 to 1917. It challenges the postmodern argument that the notion of the unique, coherent self is necessarily a tool of liberal individualism, capitalism, and disciplinary discourses. Instead it effectively demonstrates how the notion of the unique self could be – and indeed was – used to justify gender and sexual transgression. This is a highly innovative study that will be of interest to intellectual historians of modern Britain and Europe, as well as historians of gender and sexuality.

The American Marshall Plan Film Campaign and the Europeans A Captivated Audience? Maria Fritsche, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway Adapted by adaptor
This is the first book to explore the use of the Marshall Plan films and their reception across Europe. The study examines every available film – the 165 that remain from the 200 estimated to have been made – and looks at how they were designed to instil hope and argue the case for economic restructuring, with the adoption of modern USstyle production techniques helping to guarantee lasting recovery and peace. The book goes on to reason that the films even served as a powerful weapon in the cultural Cold War, used to persuade Europeans of the liberal-capitalist system’s superiority. Based on the evidence of numerous Greek consular reports, speeches, memoirs, political interviews and coverage of the status and treatment of the communities by the international Jewish press, State, Nationalism and the Jewish Communities of Modern Greece sketches a detailed picture of the Greek political elite and the state’s bureaucratic view of the various Jewish communities. By focusing on the state, though not ignoring popular attitudes, the book successfully argues that the Greek state followed policies that did not conform, and often were in opposition to, popular attitudes when it came to minorities and the Jews in particular. Food, Religion, and Communities in Early Modern Europe employs three key case studies in Castile, Zurich and Shetland to explore what food can reveal about the wider social and cultural history of early modern communities undergoing religious upheaval. Christopher Kissane uses a three-part structure focused on the major historical subjects of the Inquisition, the Reformation and witchcraft to examine issues of identity, culture, gender, symbolism, and community. The New Age in the Modern West Counterculture, Utopia and Prophecy from the Late Eighteenth Century to the Present Day Nicholas Campion, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, UK Adapted by adaptor
Arguing that New Age culture is part of a family of ideas which construct alternative futures and drive revolutionary change, Nicholas Campion traces New Age ideas from ancient cosmology to the present day. He considers the key 18thcentury figures and the legacies of Newton, Swedenborg, Blavatsky, Jung and Arguelles. Campion also pays particular attention to the 1950s beat writers, 1960s counterculture, Aquarian Age concepts, the Maya Calendar prophecies and neoconservatism, as both a reaction against the 1960s and as a utopian phenomenon. Ending the African Slave Trade
Andy DeRoche, Front Range Community College, USA
John Broich Adapted by adaptor
Although the British were early abolitionists in the mid-19th century, a significant slave trade using British ships persisted down the east coast of Africa. The Royal Navy’s response was to send a squadron to patrol the area. This is the story of the four officers who witnessed the horrors of the slave trade and made it their personal mission to end it. Squadron grew from historian John Broich’s passion to hunt down first-hand accounts of this untold story. Through archival research, Broich tells a tale of defiance in the face of political corruption. The Tragedy of Liberation A History of the Chinese Revolution 19451957 Frank Dikötter Adapted by adaptor
In 1949 Mao Zedong hoisted the red flag over Beijing’s Forbidden City. Instead of liberating the country, the communists destroyed the old order and replaced it with a repressive system that would dominate every aspect of Chinese life. In an epic of revolution and violence which draws on newly opened party archives, interviews and memoirs, Frank Dikötter interweaves the stories of millions of ordinary people with the brutal politics of Mao’s court. A gripping account of how people from all walks of life were caught up in a tragedy that sent at least five million civilians to their deaths. The Cultural Revolution A People's History, 1962—1976 Frank Dikötter Adapted by adaptor
In 1966, Mao launched an ambitious scheme to consolidate his legacy, unleashing Red Guards against all remnants of old Chinese culture. Soon rival factions were fighting each other in the streets in the name of revolutionary purity. The military intervened and killed thousands. But after the army itself fell victim to the Cultural Revolution, ordinary villagers saw an opportunity to undermine the planned economy and resurrect the market and quietly buried Maoism. Using new evidence from recently-opened party archives, Dikötter shows how economic reform from below was an unintended consequence of a decade of violent purges and entrenched fear. The Making of India The Untold Story of British Enterprise Kartar Lalvani Adapted by adaptor
The story of The Making of India begins in the 17th century, when a small seafaring island, one tenth the size of the Indian subcontinent, dispatched sailing ships over 11,000 miles on a five-month trading journey in search of new opportunities. In the end they helped build a new nation. The sheer audacity and scale of such an endeavor, the courage and enterprise, have no parallel in world history. This book is the first to assess in a single volume almost all aspects of Britain’s remarkable contribution in providing India with its lasting institutional and physical infrastructure, which continues to underpin the world’s largest democracy in the twenty-first century.

Postwar Emigration to South America from Japan and the Ryukyu Islands Pedro Iacobelli, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile Adapted by adaptor
Placing a distinct focus on the role of the sending state, this book examines the history of postwar Japan’s migration policy, linking it to the larger question of statehood and nation-building in the postwar era. It examines the state’s emigration policies, their determinants and their execution for the Japanese and Okinawan migration programs to Bolivia in the 1950s. It argues that the post-war migration policies that established those migration flows were a result of the political cost-benefit calculations, rather than only economic factors, of the three governments involved. Mass Media, Consumerism and National Identity in Postwar Japan Martyn David Smith, SOAS, University of London, UK Adapted by adaptor
Martyn Smith addresses Japan’s evolving nationalism and national identity in relation to its newly rising consumerism through a study of the transformation of the print media and the market for weekly and monthly magazines. Examining housewife magazines, news magazines and publications aimed at young people, Smith shows how the relationship of nationalism to everyday life is best understood by taking into account the changing nature of consumption. By presenting an alternative to the traditional ‘top-down’ narrative of state-driven economic nationalism, this book makes a unique contribution to the study of postwar Japanese history and Japanese nationalism. Post-Fascist Japan Political Culture in Kamakura after the Second World War Laura Hein, Northwestern University, USA Adapted by adaptor
In late 1945 local Japanese turned their energies toward creating new behaviors and institutions that would give young people better skills to combat repression at home and coercion abroad. PostFascist Japan explores this phenomenon, focusing on a group of highly educated Japanese largely based in the town of Kamakura. Hein grounds her theoretical discussion by using specific personalities, showing their ideas about ‘post-fascism’, how they implemented them and how they interacted with the American occupiers. Climate Change in Human History
Historicizing Race
Prehistory to the Present
Marius Turda & Maria Sophia Quine, both of Oxford Brookes University, UK
Benjamin Lieberman & Elizabeth Gordon, both of Fitchburg State University, USA Adapted by adaptor
"A superb work of historical and scientific synthesis." Frank Zelko, University of Vermont, USA Climate Change in Human History provides an upto-date and concise introduction to the relationship between human beings and climate change throughout history. Starting with periods hundreds of thousands of years ago, the authors illustrate how natural climate variability affected early human societies, and how humans are now altering climate within much shorter periods of time. They develop key themes including factors that shape climate, the rise and fall of civilizations, industrialization and climate science. Gendering Modernism A Historical Reappraisal of the Canon Maria Bucur, Indiana University, USA Adapted by adaptor
Maria Bucur offers a critical reappraisal of the modernist movement, asking how gender norms shaped the rebellion of the self-avowed modernists and examining the impact of radical gender reformers on modernism. Focusing primarily on the connections between North American and European modernists, she explains why we must consider the gender angles of modernism as a way to understand the legacies of the movement. Interweaving vivid case studies, the book covers various fields such as art, literature, theatre and film, whilst also demonstrating how modernism manifested itself in the major social-political and cultural shifts of the 20th century. Historicizing Race explores the interconnectedness of scientific, cultural and political strands of racial thought in Europe and elsewhere. It reconceptualises the idea of race by unearthing various historical traditions that continue to inform not only current debates about individual and collective identities, but also national and international politics. In a concise format, accessible to students and scholars alike, the authors draw out some of the reasons why race-centred thinking has, in recent years, re-emerged current populist, xenophobic, and antiimmigration movements. Reparations for Slavery and the Slave Trade A Transnational and Comparative History Ana Lucia Araujo, Howard University, USA Adapted by adaptor
"This is a book I've been waiting for - a timely and overdue account of the centuries-long cry for reparations, written by a gifted historian of transatlantic slavery." Marcus Rediker, University of Pittsburgh, USA This is the first book to present a narrative history of the demands of reparations for slavery and the Atlantic slave trade. It explores primary sources in several languages - including abolitionist pamphlets, parliamentary debates, petitions by former slaves, newspaper articles and congressional bills - and adopts a transnational approach to understand a transatlantic system that interconnected three continents for more than 300 years. Granville Sharp's Cases on Slavery
Marriage, Law and Modernity
Andrew Lyall
Edited by Julia Moses, University of Sheffield, UK
Adapted by adaptor
The purpose of this book is twofold: first, to publish previously unpublished legal materials principally in three important cases in the 18th century on the issue of slavery in England, and specifically the status of black people who were slaves in the American colonies or the West Indies and who were taken to England by their masters. The unpublished materials are mostly verbatim transcripts made by shorthand writers commissioned by Granville Sharp, one of the first Englishmen to take up the cause of the abolition of the slave trade and slavery itself. The second purpose, outlined in the Introduction, is to give a social and legal background to the cases and an analysis of the position in England of black servants/slaves brought to England and the legal effects of the cases, taking into account the newly published material. Global Histories Adapted by adaptor
Widespread recent debate has focused on the changing nature of families, characterized by the rise of unmarried cohabitation and the legalization of same-sex marriage, but historical understanding of these developments remains limited. Marriage, Law and Modernity brings together scholars from across the world in order to offer a global perspective on the history of marriage. It unites legal, political and social history, and seeks to draw out commonalities and differences by exploring connections through empire, international law and international migration. The History of United States Cultural Diplomacy 1770 to the Present Day Michael L. Krenn, Appalachian State University, USA Adapted by adaptor
Michael Krenn charts the history of the United States government’s cultural diplomacy efforts from Benjamin Franklin's service as commissioner to France in the 1770s through to the present day, exploring how these efforts were sometimes inspiring, often disastrous, and nearly always controversial attempts to tell the 'truth' about America. He reveals a dynamic conflict between those who view U.S. culture as a means to establish meaningful dialogues with the rest of the world and those who consider American art, music and theatre as additional propaganda weapons. International Cooperation in the Early Twentieth Century Daniel Gorman, University of Waterloo, Canada Adapted by adaptor
While the history of international cooperation has attracted increased historical attention over the past decade, much historical analysis of international affairs, especially of the earlier 20th century, remains state-centric. Daniel Gorman revises this historical consensus by providing a more focused and detailed analysis of the many ways in which people, especially outside of the circumscribed world of high politics, interacted with each other across borders in the early decades of the 20th century. Childhood and Modernity in Cold War Mexico City traces the transformations that occurred between 1934 and 1968 in Mexico through the lens of childhood. Eileen Ford uses a wealth of primary sources, ranging from oral histories to photojournalism, to reconstruct the reality of childhood in Mexico City during a period of changing global attitudes towards childhood and well-being. She analyses children’s presence on the silver screen, in radio and in print media to examine the way that children were constructed within public discourse in comparison to their actual experiences, paying particular attention to the influence of the 1968 student movement. Democratic Moments Reading Democratic Texts Edited by Xavier Márquez, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand Adapted by adaptor
This collection of short essays on texts in the history of democracy shows the diversity of ideas that contributed to the making of our present democratic moment. Going beyond the standard, Western-centric canonical history of democracy, with its beginnings in ancient Athens and its climax in the French and American revolutions, this book recovers some of the significant body of democratic and anti-democratic thought in Latin America, Asia, and elsewhere. The essays thus de-center our understanding of the moments where the idea of democracy was articulated, rejected, and appropriated. Liberal Moments Reading Liberal Texts Edited by Alan S. Kahan, Université de Versailles/St. Quentin-en-Yvelines, France & Ewa Atanassow, Bard College, Berlin Adapted by adaptor
This volume examines the work of the most pivotal thinkers in the liberal tradition, starting with Montesquieu and proceeding to a wide range of authors from the French Revolution to the present. It encompasses the wide spectrum of views historically encompassed by liberalism, including conceptions of liberalism formed in Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. Each chapter offers a commentary on a short critical passage from the author concerned, exploring the meaning and significance of the author's work for both the historical tradition of liberalism and for political thought more generally.
Mutiny in the Danish Atlantic World Convicts, Sailors and a Dissonant Empire Johan Heinsen, Aarlborg University, Denmark Adapted by adaptor
Taking a mutiny carried out by a group of convicts and sailors on board a Danish ship in 1683 as its central case study, this book discusses how the storytelling of the lower classes shaped antagonisms and struggles for agency in the early modern Atlantic world. Arguing that the mutiny in question was informed by stories and rumour that circulated on both sides of the Atlantic, Johan Heinsen demonstrates how sites such as ships, colonies and prisons resonated with words, and draws on comparable cases across the early modern seas. In the early 20th century, the 'problem' of interracial relations between British colonials and natives was a hotly debated topic in British India. One Scottish missionary’s solution was to isolate and raise the mixed-race children of British tea planters and local women in an institution in Kalimpong before permanently resettling them as workers in New Zealand. Using a variety of examples from across Asia, Europe and Africa, this book demonstrates the ways in which empires have shared and exchanged their knowledge about imperial governance, including military strategy, religious influence and political surveillance. It asks how, when and where these partnerships took place, and who initiated them. Not only does this book fill an empirical gap in the study of imperial history, it traces ideas of empire from their conception in imperial contact zones to their implementation in specific contexts. As such, it is an important study for imperial and global historians of all specialisms. Reducing Japan's Great Island Fortress
Peter Clarke
Mark Lardas

An exploration of the idea that war, rather than inexorable socioeconomic forces, has been a prime mover of history in the 20th century. Through the prism of the tragedy of two World Wars, Peter Clarke examines the interplay between key figures with a sophisticated analysis of their writings, decisions and pronouncements, alongside the broader dynamics of history of this extraordinary period. Clarke illuminates some crucial historical controversies, putting the question of how a world war started in 1914, and the issue of Germany's 'war guilt', into a challenging new perspective. In 1942, the massive Japanese naval and air base at Rabaul was a fortress standing on the road to Tokyo. It was impossible to seize Rabaul, or starve the 100,000-strong garrison out. Instead the US-led Allies began an innovative, hard-fought air campaign to draw Rabaul’s teeth, and allow them to bypass the island completely. Avoiding a costly invasion, they would gradually destroy Japan’s offensive capabilities on Rabaul, and then rely on air power to keep Rabaul out of the war. But Rabaul was a tough, hugely fortified target for pilots and aviators to fly against. Mark Lardas explains how this legendary air campaign was conceived and fought, and how its success provided a roadmap for the rest of the Pacific War. This is the only major biography of Ludendorff, a top general of the First World War and former military dictator of Germany. Shortly after losing the war in 1918, Ludendorff created the myth that they had lost only because the Jews had conspired against their own country. Violence and the German Soldier in the Great War Killing, Dying, Surviving Benjamin Ziemann, University of Sheffield, UK Adapted by adaptor
During the Great War, mass-killing took place on an unprecedented scale. Violence and the German Soldier in the Great War demonstrates how the soldiers in the German army were practicing violence and how the killing of enemies, the dying of German soldiers and their survival were entwined. Benjamin Ziemann makes a wealth of extensive archival work available to an Anglophone audience for the first time, enhancing our understanding of the German army and its practises of violence during the First World War and the implications of this brutalisation in post-war Germany. This study examines the significance of ‘the fatherland’ notion during the First World War and its aftermath. The book combines chapters on broad topics like patriotism, nation, and minorities at war with more specific case studies in order to deepen our understanding of how this nationalist concept remained an essential building block of the culture of total war in Europe at this time. Britain and China, 1950-1972 Chi-kwan Mark, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK Adapted by adaptor
"Chi-Kwan Mark has written a powerful account of a key Cold War relationship." Rana Mitter, University of Oxford China Centre, UK In 1950 the British government accorded diplomatic recognition to the newly founded People’s Republic of China, but it took 22 years for Britain to establish full diplomatic relations with China. This book argues that Britain and China were involved in an ‘everyday Cold War’: a continuous process of contestation and cooperation that allowed them to normalise their confrontation in the absence of full diplomatic relations, and which was marked by diplomatic ritual, propaganda rhetoric and symbolic retaliation. Moving beyond the battlefields of the Chaco War, this volume highlights the forgotten narratives of the war. Studying the environmental, ethnic and social realities in both Bolivia and Paraguay, the contributors examine the conflict and explore its relationship with and impact on nationalism, activism and modernity.
In the first work of academic research to examine the study of peace head on, Roger Manning looks at war and peace from the Classical world through to the 18th century. He considers the nature and advocacy of war and peace from both historical and philosophical perspectives, examining how universal peace has become a political philosophy that underpins modern society’s attitudes towards warfare and militarism.

This book examines the experience of two British Infantry Divisions, the 43rd (Wessex) and 53rd (Welsh) during the Overlord campaign in Northwest Europe. To understand the way the British fought during Operation Overlord, the book considers the political and military factors between 1918 and 1943 before addressing the major battles and day-to-day experiences of the campaign. A Comparative Study of Great Britain and the USA Rachel Pistol, University of Exeter, UK Adapted by adaptor
The internment of ‘enemy aliens’ during the Second World War was arguably the greatest stain on the Allied record of human rights on the home front. Internment during the Second World War compares and contrasts the experiences of foreign nationals unfortunate enough to be born in the ‘wrong’ nation when Great Britain, and later the USA, went to war. Memoirs, letters, and oral testimony help to put a human face on the suffering incurred during the turbulent early years of the war and serve as memorials of what can happen to vulnerable groups during times of conflict. Survivor Transitional Narratives of Nazi-Era Destruction The Second Liberation
The United States and the Nazi Holocaust Race, Refuge, and Remembrance Barry Trachtenberg, Wake Forest University, USA Adapted by adaptor
The United States and the Nazi Holocaust is an invaluable synthesis of American policies and attitudes towards the Nazi persecution of the European Jewry from 1933 up to the modern day. The book, which includes 20 illustrations, weaves together a vast body of scholarly literature to bring students of the Holocaust a balanced, readable overview of this complex and often controversial topic. It demonstrates that the United States’ response to the rise of Nazism, the refugee crisis it provoked, the Holocaust, and its aftermath were—and remain—intricately linked to the ever-shifting racial, social, and political status of American Jewry. Survivor Transitional Narratives of Nazi-Era Destruction examines Holocaust accounts written during the 1960s by three survivors and draws attention to the importance of the historical context in which these testimonies were written. Dennis B. Klein considers how the backdrop of the 1960s, Nazi war trials, and Nazi amnesty legislation influenced writers’ decisions to share their experiences and motivated the ways in which they did so. Drawing on anthropology, archaeology, economics and philosophy – to name a few – these titles help to highlight that the study of history and politics should never be considered in a vacuum but in relation to other subjects. History and Politics in the 20th Century: Europe in the 20th Century - Bloomsbury Academic Collections Ten-Volume Set This collection of ten facsimile titles, chosen from our imprints Pinter, Mansell and Continuum, covers a broad variety of themes that confronted Europe throughout the turbulent 20th century, focusing on European politics abroad as much as on inter-European political changes and challenges. The titles in this set examine the development of Britain from Empire to Commonwealth, paying particular attention to the inter- and post-war years, the emergence of the European Union and the struggles faced by former Soviet states in the 1990s. They also pick up on two of the leitmotifs of the 20th century: the quest for sovereignty and the rise and fall (and rise) of extreme right ideas and politics.
