The Educational Leader in a World of Covert Threats

Mike Bottery, University of Hull, UK
This book describes the impact of five covert threats to sustainability at micro-, meso-, and macro- levels, and how understanding and meeting these threats affects and changes the thought, values, and practice underpinning the educational leadership role It argues that such awareness should similarly alter the focus of educational institutions, and of inspectoral processes on these institutions, and needs to become part of the cultural zeitgeist of present-day societies if future generations are to inherit a sustainable world

Class, Place, and Higher Education
Experiences of Homely Mobility
Alexandra Coleman, Western Sydney University, Australia
Challenging the myth that participation in higher education necessarily leads to upward social mobility, this book explores how the rewards of higher education are unevenly distributed It considers how visions of a good life are class differentiated and argues for the significance of place when examining experiences of higher education Through an attention to the existential and social dimensions of mobility, Coleman develops the term “homely mobility” to describe the pull of home and degrees of mobility in place
Structural inequalities are an embodied dimension of social being and action, and this book affords insights into broader processes of reproduction and transformation

A Critical Anthropology of Childhood in Haiti
Emotion, Power, and White Saviours
Diane M. Hoffman
This book offers a critical anthropological perspective on contemporary childhood in Haiti
It is based on ethnographic fieldwork carried out over a period of 13 years with vulnerable children in Haiti Diane M Hoffman raises important questions about how interventions by wellmeaning foreigners misrepresent Haitian culture as deficient, often in ways that reinforce their own power to control, define and narrate Haitian lives She argues for a new approach to Haitian childhood that centers childhood learning and self-education alongside the ethics of personhood and indigenous spirituality that can resist the hegemony of neo-colonial and neo-liberal forces

Class, Race, Disability and Mental Health in Higher Education
Questioning the Access, Success and Progression of Disadvantaged Students
Mike Seal, University of Suffolk, UK
In this book, Seal examines the terminology, theoretical debates and positions, identifies the causes of gaps, and evaluates proposed initiatives He argues that there is an unexamined assumption that higher education is a ‘good thing’ materially and intellectually, which demonises those for whom this is questionable The book also highlights the continuing structural and individual discrimination in terms of class, race and disability and a denial of the extent to which higher education is a cause of mental health issues and negative well-being

The Disaster of Resilience Education, Digital Privatisation, and Profiteering
Kenneth J. Saltman, University of Illinois
Chicago, USA
The Disaster of Resilience shows how resilience discourse is interwoven with the new digital directions of educational privatization Saltman argues that resilience has provided the justification for new educational profiteering, creating a climate which individualizes collective responsibilities, depoliticizes and dehistoricizes knowledge and curriculum, and falsely grounds its politics in a mashup of pseudo-science and human capital theory He argues that we must replace resilience discourse with pedagogies and curriculum that allow students not only to endure the intolerable conditions they find themselves in, but to see beyond those conditions and to act collectively to change them

Responsibility
Philosophy of Education in Practice
Barbara S. Stengel, Vanderbilt University, USA
Using a critical pragmatist framing of the concept of responsibility, Stengel shows how greater attention to responsibly allows for a deeper understanding of diversity and equity and individual and common goods It enables a deeper understanding of the moral dimensions of teaching and learning prospectively in growth rather than retrospectively in blame The philosophical discussion of responsibility is coupled with discussion of the lived experiences of students, teachers, aides, and administrators and draws evidence from a case study of a middle school turnaround in Nashville, USA

Emotions
Philosophy of Education in Practice
Liz Jackson
Schools and other forms of education and have significant impacts on people’s views about emotions and emotional experiences It shows how we often take it for granted that certain emotions, such as happiness, are ‘positive’, while others are ‘negative’ and how personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, and race, can make an unfair difference when it comes to what emotions are expected or accepted Written in an accessible format, the book encourages broad reflection on what emotions are and why they matter, in relation to the aims of education, what it means to be a good person, and equality and social justice .

Capitalism, Pedagogy, and the Politics of Being
Noah De Lissovoy, The University of Texas at Austin, USA
This book investigates the relationship between capitalism and coloniality in society and education, and reconceptualizes emancipatory theory and pedagogy in response Reframing central categories in Western critical thought, De Lissovoy exposes a logic of violation at the heart of capitalist accumulation and argues that we need to attend to epistemological and ontological orders of domination within which subjectivity takes shape De Lissovoy shows how a new critical imaginary, in schools and other educational spaces, can reconstruct pedagogical relationships in the mode of a decolonial and democratic commons

EDUCATION –Comparative & International Education / Critcal Pedagogy / Education Studies
A pilot open access model for books
BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. We are the first commercial publisher to pilot such a model. Our hope is to engage a more diverse set of authors, bringing their work to a wider global audience.
THE BOOKS
In this pilot phase we aim to make 20 frontlist titles in African Studies and International Development OA immediately upon publication. The titles, including some from Bloomsbury’s renowned Zed Books imprint, are due to publish between March 2024 and February 2025.
BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES
• Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 20 research titles available OA
• Receive 1 year’s access to 194 backlist titles in African Studies and International Development
• Be publicly acknowledged on our website
• If we do not raise enough funds to publish the titles OA, receive permanent access to all 20 frontlist titles
• If we raise 50% of our target funding and can only publish 10 titles OA, receive permanent access to the 10 titles that are not made OA
