L E T T E R F R O M T H E E D I TO R S

Welcome to Bloomsbury Film & Media Studies Welcome to the new Film & Media Studies catalogue. As you will have noticed, for the first time this catalogue is coming out under the Bloomsbury name instead of the separate Continuum, Berg, AVA, Methuen Drama and Bloomsbury Academic imprints. We wanted to give you some background to this rebranding. In 2008, Bloomsbury decided to invest in building a new academic division. Growth since that decision took place has been very rapid: we now publish around 1,100 books each year, with a particularly big presence in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and our backlist comprises some 20,000 titles. The purchase of Continuum in 2011 was a key part of this growth. We believe we are stronger as a group, which is why we have taken the strategic decision to adopt the Bloomsbury name for all academic titles that we publish. With effect from 1st September 2012, all new Continuum titles will be published under the Bloomsbury brand. The same applies to all Berg and AVA titles, as of 1st January 2013. This will make it easier for you to find quality publishing in film and media studies, rather than navigating across a number of imprints. The values of Continuum, AVA, and our other imprints, which you have appreciated over the years, are already integral to the larger entity that is Bloomsbury. Much has changed over the past 12 months, but we remain as committed to our authors and to publishing the same high quality textbooks, course books, research monographs, reference works, professional and general interest books, journals and online resources.

Highlights With this catalogue, we launch a number of exciting titles and series. In media studies, the highlights include How to Launch a Magazine in the Digital Age, Understanding Machinima (replete with QR codes and a mobile companion site!), The Spectralities Reader, Television Aesthetics and Style, Understanding Fandom and Playing with the Past: Digital Games and the Simulation of History. Our International Texts in Critical Media Aesthetics series features two new contributions from the series editor himself, Francisco J. Ricardo, and from leading media theorist Lev Manovich (p.16). Topics and Issues in National Cinema also launches fresh this season with two titles: Revolution and Rebellion in Mexican Film and Ecology and Contemporary Nordic Cinema, spearheaded by Armida de la Garza, who aims to give a voice to those understudied nations’ cinematic output as it relates to historical, political and cultural concerns (p.9). In film studies, we launch our film and philosophy series, Thinking Cinema, with Thomas Elsaesser’s European Cinema and Contemporary Philosophy (p.28). You’ll note texts paying particular attention to filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Lars von trier, Guillermo del Toro, Mike Leigh and Hal Hartley. And finally, a few new screenwriting tomes, dedicated to the psychology of screenwriting, the horror film genre (Writing the Horror Film) and one specifically on dialogue (Constructing Dialogue), both of which can be found on page 5.

New Website Finally, we are delighted to announce the launch of a new global Bloomsbury website: www.bloomsbury.com. This site brings together everything under the Bloomsbury Group, including Continuum, Berg, Methuen Drama, Arden Shakespeare, T&T Clark, Bristol Classical Press, and A&C Black titles. The site features enhanced academic functionality such as online previews, digital inspection copies, textbook companion sites and online resources. Go to www.bloomsbury.com/academic for more information. We hope you enjoy reading our latest catalogue, Katie Gallof, Acquisitions Editor, New York katie.gallof@bloomsbury.com

Robert Edgar-Hunt, John Marland, and Steven Rawle Most films are a mosaic of fractured images and fragmented narratives, yet we have little problem piecing them together into a complete, meaningful sequence. The average audience is capable of following the most labyrinthine plots, feeling genuine emotion for characters, and believing that their worlds continue to exist even after the film has ended. This book discusses the stories films tell, the sign-systems they deploy, the interpretive contexts we are invited to place them in, and the range of aesthetic elements which contribute to the cinematic image. Writing the Horror Movie

Screenwriting

Marc Blake and Sara Bailey

bestseller

The Sequence Approach

“It’s important for people to understand that the screenplay’s essential role in film making is the same regardless of the genre of the film.” John Landis

Paul Joseph Gulino

For the first time ever, this book offers a detailed analysis of the horror genre, including its subgenres, tropes and the specific requirements of the horror screenplay. Screenplays and genres discussed include the German Expressionism of Nosferatu to the Universal franchises of the 30s (Frankenstein), to Sci-Fi (Psycho), the Slasher film franchise (Friday 13th), Asian Horror, horror verite (Blair Witch) and torture porn (Saw). It also includes step-by-step writing exercises, annotated extracts from horror screenplays and interviews with seasoned writers/ directors/producers discussing budget restrictions, screenplay form and formulas and how screenplays work during shooting.

A screenplay can be understood as being built of sequences of about fifteen Pages each, and by focusing on solving the dramatic aspects of each of these sequences in detail, a writer can more easily conquer the challenges posed by the script as a whole. The sequence approach has its foundation in early Hollywood cinema and has been used effectively at such film schools as the University of Southern California, Columbia and Chapman University. This book provides a sequence analysis of eleven feature films: The Shop Around The Corner, Double Indemnity, Nights of Cabiria, North By Northwest, Lawrence of Arabia, The Graduate, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Toy Story, Air Force One, Being John Malkovich, and The Fellowship of the Ring.

SARA BAILEY is a Senior Lecturer at Southampton Solent University, UK. MARC BLAKE teaches horror film at Southampton Solent University, UK.

The Psychology of Screenwriting

SCREENWRITING

SCREENWRITING

Constructing Dialogue textbook

Theory and Practice Jason Lee A comprehensive introduction to the craft of screenwriting, encompassing theory, practical tools, pedagogical features, and focusing heavily on examples from contemporary film that guides the student screenwriter through the stages of screenwriting. Chapters focus on core topics such as the purpose of screenwriting, genres, structure, the expression of ideas, character, awareness of the visual, and adaptations. Films analyzed in-depth include Rear Window, Short Cuts, Pulp Fiction, Crash, Moon, and Orlando. Jason Lee is Head of Film, Media and Creative Writing at the University of Derby, UK.

Screenwriting from Citizen Kane to Midnight in Paris Mark Axelrod This book provides a more analytical treatment of certain individual scenes and how those scenes were constructed to be the most highly dramatic vis á vis their dialogue. In the art of screenwriting, one cannot separate how the scene is constructed from how the dialogue is written. Using case studies from the last 70 years, each chapter deals with how a particular screenwriter approached dialogue relative to that particular scene’s construction. MARK AXELROD is a Professor of English & Comparative Literature at Chapman University, and Director of the John Fowles Center for Creative Writing, USA. The Orientation of Future Cinema Technology, Aesthetics, Spectacle

The Nazi Image in Low-Brow Cinema and Culture

Bruce Isaacs

Edited by Daniel H . Magilow, Elizabeth Bridges, and Kristin T . Vander Lugt The editors examine past intersections of National Socialism and popular cinema and the recent reemergence of this imagery in contemporary visual culture. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, films such as Love Camp 7 and Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS introduced and reinforced the image of Nazis as master paradigms of evil in what film theorists deem the ‘sleaze’ film. More recently, Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, as well as video games such as Call of Duty: World at War, have reinvented this iconography for new audiences. In these works, the violent Nazi becomes the hyperbolic caricature of the “monstrous feminine” or the masculine sadist. DANIEL H. MAGILOW is Assistant Professor of German at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA. ELIZABETH BRIDGES is Assistant Professor of German at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. KRISTIN T. “Essential reading for anyone interested in the fate of the image in the digital era.” Nicholas Rombes, University of Detroit Mercy, author of Cinema in the Digital Age This book reflects on the cinematic past, present and future, constructing a vision of cinema that is at once grounded in new technologies and new aesthetic practices. Examining in detail Cameron’s Avatar, Bay’s Transformers and Nolan’s The Dark Knight, the author argues that High Concept cinema fascinates audiences not because it can technologically produce the most perfect semblance of reality but because it gives us access to ‘impossible images’ that create powerful and profoundly emotional forms of film engagement. The 1960s was famously the decade of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. It was also a decade of revolution and counter-revolution, when traditional Hollywood was in decline, both artistically and commercially. The genres which had held audiences captive in the 1940s and 50s—musicals, Westerns, melodramas—were losing their appeal and their great practitioners were approaching retirement. The scene was therefore set for new cinemas to emerge to attract the young, the discriminating, the politically conscious and the sexually emancipated. Common to most of them, however, was a political and aesthetic radicalism that broke with the traditions of studio filmmaking. This revised and expanded edition pays particular attention to a handful of remarkable talents (Godard, Antonioni, Oshima) that emerged during this period. Monster Culture in the 21st Century

Film Genres

A Reader

Series Editors: Charles Acland, Concordia University, Canada and Mark Jankovich, University of East Anglia, UK

Edited by Marina Levina and Diem-My T . Bui In the past decade, our rapidly changing world faced terrorism, global epidemics, economic and social strife, new communication technologies, and climate change. These essays examine how monstrosity has been used to manage these rising fears and tensions. Analyzing popular films and TV shows, such as True Blood, Twilight, Paranormal Activity, District 9, Battlestar Galactica, and Avatar, it argues that monstrous narratives of the past decade have become omnipresent specifically because they represent collective social anxieties over resisting and embracing change in the 21st century.

Covering all major film genres, each volume in this series presents a clear summary of the historical development of and the existing approaches to a genre .

Historical Film A Critical Introduction Jonathan Stubbs Combines a critical analysis of the Hollywood historical film with an examination of its generic dimensions and a history of its development since the silent period. This book is concerned not simply with the formal properties of the films at hand, but also the ways in which they have been promoted, interpreted and discussed in relation to their engagement with the past.

Considers a huge range of work including both popular and ‘B’ genres, such as the sword and sandal epic or “peplum” film of the 1950s; the Italian horror film, the so-called spaghetti nightmare films, that began in the 1950s and continue to be made today; the giallo or Italian mystery thriller; and the poliziesco or Italian crime film from the 1970s to the present. This new book also examines the emergence of a “third wave” of new auteurs born in the 1950s as well as an even younger group of important directors born in the 1960s who have already made their mark on the direction of the Italian cinema in the third millennium. Ecology and Contemporary Nordic Cinemas From Nation-building to Ecocosmopolitanism Pietari Kaapa

Revolution and Rebellion in Mexican Film Niamh Thornton

Challenges the traditional socio-political rhetoric of national cinema by providing an ecocritical examination of Nordic cinema. The author uses a range of analytical approaches to interrogate how the national paradigm can be rethought through ecosystemic concerns, by exploring a range of Nordic films as national and transnational, regional and local texts, all with significant global implications. ‘Ecocinema’ involves the study of the relationship between films and the physical environment, including the study of the production and reproduction of life, the relationship between the human body and the ecosystem, and the controlling and administering of the human body in modern capitalist and socialist regimes.

Examines Mexican films of political conflict from the early studio revolutionary films of the 1930-50s to the campaigning Zapatista films of the 2000s. Mapping this evolution out for the first time, the author takes three key events under consideration: the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920); the student movement and massacre in 1968; and, finally, the more recent Zapatista Rebellion (1994-present). Analyzing films such as Vamanos con Pancho Villa, El Grito, and Corazon del Tiempo, the author uses the term ‘political conflict’ to refer to those violent disturbances, dramatic periods of confrontation, injury and death, which characterize particular historical events involving state and non-state actors that may have a finite duration, but have a long-lasting legacy on the nation.

Masculinity and Gender in Greek Cinema 1949-1967 Achilleas Hadjikyriacou Between the end of the Civil War (1949) and the colonels’ military coup (1967) Greece underwent tremendous political, economic, and social transformations which influenced gender identities and relations. During the same period, Greece also witnessed an unparalleled bloom in cinema productions. Based on the recently established paradigm that cinema and popular culture viewed as social institutions can inform a historical study, this book explores the relationship between Greek cinema and the society within which it was created. Cypriot Cinemas Memory, Conflict and Identity in the Margins of Europe Edited by Costas Constandinides and Yiannis Papadakis Cyprus is better known as a site of conflict between Greek and Turkey, rather than for its film output. The authors seek to rectify this dearth of information by discussing the work of a new generation of filmmakers striving to engage with the island’s traumatic legacies: anti-colonial struggles, post-colonial instability, interethnic conflict and war. Beginning from the cinema of the 1960s when the island became a republic, the study focuses on the recent decades and filmmakers currently exploring issues of conflict, memory, identity, nationalism, migration, gender and globalization, as well as the work of filmmakers who chose to cooperate across the ethnic divide. Deeper than Oblivion Trauma and Memory in Israeli Cinema Edited by Raz Yosef and Boaz Hagin Israeli cinema has innovatively used trauma and memory to offer insights about Israeli society and to engage with cinematic experimentation and invention. Tracing a long line of films from as early as 1934, the contributors use close readings of these films to not only reconstruct the past, but to actively engage with it. Using films not usually studied, like A Film Unfinished, Happy Birthday Mr. Mograbi, and A Hole in the Moon, this book underlines the unique aesthetic choices many of these films make in their attempt to confront the difficulties, perhaps even impossibility, of representing trauma. China’s iGeneration Filmmakers, Films, and Audiences in a New Media Age Edited by Matthew D . Johnson, Luke Vulpiani, Keith B . Wagner, and Kiki Tianqi Yu The first decade of the 21st century has seen wide-ranging transformations to Chinese film. Under what the editors are terming ‘iGeneration cinema,’ they conceptualize three key developments: commercialization, the ubiquity of digital technology, and the emergence of new producers and venues. Among Chinese youth, films are now predominantly disseminated via the internet, which represents a key medium through which productions both big and small are connected with viewers, potential investors, and critics. Darkness in the Bliss-Out

Politics as Form in Lars von Trier

A Reconsideration of the Films of Steven Spielberg

A Post-Brechtian Reading

James Kendrick While there has been a significant outpouring of scholarship on Spielberg over the past decade, his films are still frequently discussed as being paternalistic, escapist, and reliant on uncomplicated emotions and complicated special effects. Even those critics and scholars who are favorable toward his work still tend to view it as essentially optimistic, reassuring, and conservative. This book takes an alternate view of the director’s work and proposes that his films are significantly darker and more emotionally and ideologically complex than they are routinely given credit for. Angelos Koutsourakis This book is the first study of Lars von Trier that employs a materialist framework to discuss the formal complexity that characterises the films of the Danish auteur. Through a detailed formal analysis of five films—The Europa trilogy (The Element of Crime, Epidemic and Europa), The Idiots and Dogville— Brecht is used as a methodological tool to discuss the shift from a dialectical cinema devoted to the production of knowledge effects, to a post-Brechtian one that brings together points of tension that remain unresolved.

The Cinema of Hal Hartley Devised and Directed by Mike Leigh Edited by Marc DiPaolo and Bryan Cardinale-Powell Renowned for making films that are at once sly comedies and stark, ‘social realist’ dramas, British writer-director Mike Leigh challenges his viewers to see the unvarnished truth about modern-day society. This collection features new essays that cover all phases of the BAFTA-award-winner’s career, from his early television work to his theatrical films, including Life is Sweet, Naked, Secrets & Lies, All or Nothing, Vera Drake, Happy-Go-Lucky, and Another Year. Contributions also cover many themes recurrent in many of his films: representations of politics, class, race, gender; the changing cultural and political landscape of Great Britain; the differentiation of Leigh from other British creators; and how Leigh’s real life informs his work. Sebastian Manley Hal Hartley is considered one of the most significant contributors to the American ‘independent’ cinema that flowered in the late 1980s and that now occupies a very important place in the American film landscape. Through a detailed discussion of all of Hartley’s short and feature-length films, from cult classics such as The Unbelievable Truth and Trust to oddball genre experiments such as No Such Thing and Fay Grim to shorts such as Opera No . 1 and Accomplice and of their cultural-economic contexts, this book looks at how Hartley’s cultural position has shifted as a result both of his bold career choices and of contextual changes in 1990s and 2000s American film. Tomas then explores the film’s various aspects and contributions to media history and practice through detailed discussions of selected case studies. The first concerns the way Snow’s La Région Centrale and De La extend and/or develops important theoretical and technical aspects of Vertov’s original film, in particular those aspects that have made the film so important in the history of cinema. The linkage between Vertov’s film and the works discussed in the case studies will also serve to illustrate the historical and theoretical significance of a comparative approach of this kind. Inspirations and Techniques

David Cronenberg’s Cinema of Confrontation

Alfred Hitchcock demonstrated an early fascination with the new art of the cinema. He entered the film industry in 1920, and by 1925 he had directed his first feature-length film, The Pleasure Garden. His subsequent film career mirrored the phenomenal growth of the film industry during the years 1925 to 1976, the year of his last film. In the same way, Hitchcock’s films paralleled the technological and scientific discoveries and inventions of the film industry: sound, color, lightweight cameras and tape recorders, silent running cameras, wide screen technologies. The author applies the theories of dark energy and neurocinematics to Hitchcock’s technological genius and camera aesthetics.

Paul Nelson’s Lost Interviews with Clint Eastwood, 1979-1983 Edited by Kevin Avery Foreword by Jonathan Lethem “Can a collection of interviews be called poignantly brilliant? This one is.” Ken Tucker, Entertainment Weekly Eastwood has forged a remarkable career as a movie star, director, producer and composer. These newly discovered conversations with legendary journalist Paul Nelson return us to a point when, still acting in other people’s films, Eastwood was honing his directorial craft on a series of inexpensive films that he brought in under budget and ahead of schedule. The interviews were conducted from 1979 through 1983. Eastwood talks openly and without illusions about his early career as an actor, old Hollywood, and his formative years as a director, his influence and what he learned along the way as an actor—lessons that helped him become the director he is today. The Environmental Documentary

Dreams in American Television Narratives From Dallas to Buffy Cynthia Burkhead The first comprehensive analysis of one of American television’s most frequently utilized tropes, the dream. Locating TV’s primary function as narrative, the author uses examples from American sitcoms and dramatic programs, analyzing the narrative functions of dreams using, as its frame, Carl Jung’s narrative stages of the dream: exposition, development, culmination, and conclusion. While television dreams are analyzed throughout, case studies of the television programs The Sopranos and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are included to show in detail how dreams function throughout a television series. Edited by Steven Peacock and Jason Jacobs The question of how television operates on a stylistic level has been critically underexplored, despite being fundamental to our viewing experience. This significant new work redresses a vital gap in Television Studies by engaging with the stylistic dynamics of TV; exploring the aesthetic properties and values of both the medium and specific programmes; and raising important questions about the way we judge television as both cultural artifact and art form. Cinema Activism in the 21st Century John A . Duvall Provides the first detailed coverage of the most important environmental films of the decade, including their approach to their topics and their impacts on public opinion and political debate. The text also examines the processes of production and distribution that have produced this explosion in documentaries. The films range from a high-profile Hollywood production with theatrical distribution like An Inconvenient Truth, to shorter independently produced films like The End of Suburbia, that have reached a small audience of activists through video distribution and word of mouth. DeFino No advertisers to please, no censors to placate, no commercial interruptions every 11 minutes, HBO rewrote the rules of television and the result has been nothing short of a cultural ground shift. Their decision to focus on smaller markets made shows like Sex and the City, The Sopranos, The Wire, and True Blood, trigger basic cable networks to follow suit. Deadwood and the End of American Empire

New Trends in Network Serial Production

Edited by Paul Stasi and Jennifer Greiman “This timely volume goes a long way to redress the dearth of scholarship on one of the richest television dramas in recent years....Several of the chapters will be required reading for my course on contemporary American television.” Ted Nanicelli, Lecturer, Screen and Media Studies, University of Waikato, New Zealand By placing Deadwood among the other significant HBO shows that interrogate American iconography and culture at the turn of this century—The Sopranos and The Wire—Stasi and Greiman have produced a cohesive examination of what they call “The Last Western” through a variety of academic voices and disciplines. Grounding contemporary anxieties about race and class, domesticity and American exceptionalism in its 19th-century setting, Deadwood revises our understanding of a formative period for the American nation through a re-examination of one of the main genres through which this national story has been transmitted: the Western. M .J . Clarke Faced with what many were calling a dying medium, U.S. network TV producers became much more aggressive in seeking out alternative business and artistic models. Many producers turned to the emerging field of transmedia (ancillary texts in comicbooks, novels and new media) for new content. In this book, the author examines four such programs (24, Alias, Heroes and Lost) and investigates how transmedia was incorporated into TV production. Split into two parts, the book first paints a picture of how transmedia producers were, or were not, incorporated into creative decisionmaking centers of these programs. The second section explains how the presence of off-site transmedia texts begins to alter the very narrative construction of the on-air series themselves. M.J. CLARKE recently earned his PhD in Film and Television from UCLA, USA. Television on Demand Curatorial Culture and the Transformation of TV MJ Robinson

The Wire

bestseller

Urban Decay and American Television Edited by Tiffany Potter and C .W . Marshall The first collection of critical essays on HBO’s The Wire, the most brilliant and socially relevant television series in years. Over its five season run (2002-2008), the show presented several overlapping narrative threads, all set in the city of Baltimore. The series consistently deconstructed the conventional narratives of law, order, and disorder, offering a view of America that has never before been admitted to the public discourse of the televisual. By focusing on four main topics (Crime, Law Enforcement, America, and Television), this book examines the series’ place within popular culture and its representation of the realities of inner city life, social institutions, and politics in contemporary American society. TIFFANY POTTER teaches in the Department of English at the University of British Columbia, Canada. C.W. MARSHALL is an Associate Professor of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies in the Department of English at the University of British Columbia, Canada.

The rise of a curatorial culture where viewers create their own entertainment packages and select from a buffet of viewing options and venues has caused a seismic shift for the traditional TV industry. While audiences clamor for more story-driven and scripted entertainment, their new viewing habits undermine the dominant economic structures that fund quality episodic series. This book examines how we have reached this present moment and considers the viable future(s) of this crucial culture industry. This leads to an understanding of an empowered audience that realizes its means of control of how it consumes media, as well as a new way of looking at the industry we call ‘television.’ MJ ROBINSON is a political economist/broadcast historian and an Assistant Professor of Communication Arts at Marymount Manhattan College, USA. Mass Communications and Media Studies

bestseller

Peyton Paxson This primary text surveys the history of mass communication media, discusses the current state of each medium, and anticipates the future of mass media. Its focus is a broad survey of the mass media industry and the role it plays in society, which distinguishes it from books that focus solely on communications theory. Divided into 12 chapters, it can be used in either 16-week semesters or 12-week terms. Written in an accessible and wellorganized manner, and directed toward a distinct yet sizeable student population, this textbook should prove attractive to a great number of two-year college faculty members. An Introduction

Understanding Media Theory

Media and the Power of Knowledge

2nd

edition

textbook

Traces the evolution of how media has transformed global and social knowledge by drawing a line from the printing press to the rise of electronic communication. Fuller points to the spread of publishing and the rise of technology such as telegraphy that allowed researchers to connect, and allowed the first forms of collective intelligence to flourish. With the invention of the internet, globally accessible information has become possible and has fundamentally altered how we form public opinion. Finally, he looks at the role of media moguls and the function of the critic, pundit and broadcaster, and investigates how the balance of power has shifted in recent years. Beasley, Professor Emerita of Journalism, University of Maryland College Park, USA The rise of the Information Age, the fall of the traditional media, and the bewildering explosion of personal information services are all connected to the historical chain of communications’ revolutions. We need to understand these revolutions because they influence our present and future as much as any other trend in history. Beyond the Screen Future Fictions and Audiences Sarah Atkinson Within multi-platform films and dramas the fourth wall—the invisible barrier that separates the onscreen fictional world from the audience— has crumbled. The adoption of technologies such as mobile devices for digital media consumption and social networking, has led to the emergence of hybrid forms of fictions where stories are experienced across many platforms for prolonged periods of time. The boundary between reality and fiction blurs, cinematic and televisual genres merge and the audience is able to participate within the fictional world as never before. This book maps the development of these forms through the examination of various cutting-edge, international case studies of multi-platform fictions. Software Takes Command Lev Manovich

What was the thinking and motivation of people who in the 1960s and 70s created concepts that underlie contemporary media software such as InDesign, Illustrator, Maya, and Final Cut? How do their interfaces and tools shape the visual aesthetics of contemporary media and design? Manovich answeres these questions and supports his theoretical arguments by detailed analysis of key media applications such as Photoshop and After Effects, popular web services such as Google Earth, and the projects in motion graphics, interactive environments, graphic design and architecture. 3D History, Theory and Aesthetics of the Transplane Image Jens Schroeter Appearing for the first time in English, Schroeter’s comprehensive study of the aesthetics of the 3D image is a major scholarly addition to this evolving field. Citing case studies from the history of both technology and the arts, this authoritative book charts the development in the theory and practice of three-dimensional images, which were widely used in the 20th century for military, scientific and medical applications, but now in the 21st century, being adopted by television and film.

The Engagement Aesthetic Experiencing New Media Art through Critique Francisco J . Ricardo Ricardo proposes an ‘engagement aesthetic’ as revealing certain commonalities in the practices of new media art and thus as providing a crucial critical framework. By examining specific works in multiple categories (performance and digital projection; kinetic sculpture and video; projection and text messaging, etc.), Ricardo implements the use of phenomenology in order to understand the processes necessary to complete these emerging types of works. He first examines specific works through structural description, moving to analysis of individual viewer perspectives, and ends with critical questions about the place of this perceptual experience in current ideological and institutional contexts. Projected Art History The Biopic, Celebrity Culture, and the Popularizing of American Art Doris Berger Highlights the narrative structure and images created in the film genre of biopics, in which the artist’s life is being dramatized and embodied by an actor. Berger offers an analytical approach by concentrating on the two case studies: Basquiat and Pollock, but also looks at larger issues at play, such as how postwar American art history is being mediated in a popular format such as the biopic.

The Ethics of Emerging Media

bestseller

Information, Social Norms, and New Media Technology Edited by Bruce E . Drushel and Kathleen German

Critical Theory and Contemporary Society Series Editor: Darrow Schecter, University of Sussex, UK

“Should be required reading for any scholar interested in contemporary digital communication practices.” Cheryl E . Ball, Associate Professor of New Media Studies, Illinois State University, USA Centering on different new media forms from eBay to Wikipedia, each chapter raises questions about how changing media formats affect current theoretical understanding of ethics. By interrogating traditional ethical theory, we can better understand the challenges to ethical decision making in an age of rapidly evolving media.

Critical Theory and Contemporary Society is a series of monographs that explore the relation between contemporary society as a complex and highly differentiated phenomenon on the one hand, and critical theory as a correspondingly sophisticated methodology for studying and understanding it on the other .

Critical Theory and the Digital David M . Berry This volume offers an original analysis of the role of the digital in today’s society. It rearticulates critical theory by engaging it with the challenges of the digital revolution to show how the digital is changing the ways in which we lead our politics, societies, economies, media, and even private lives.

Internet, Society and Culture Communicative Practices Before and After the Internet Tim Jordan Traces how people who have nothing and everything to share in their everyday communications use the technologies at hand to sustain a fantasy of presence, even when communicating with remote others. By contrasting the letter writing practices of early Australian colonizers with the contemporary performative practices of gamers colonizing virtual spaces, the author explains how people play with matter, performativity and presence to tell stories that both stabilize and reinvent the place of the self at a given point in time. Series Editors: Leslie Haddon, London School of Economics, UK and Nicola Green, University of Surrey, UK

Provides a thorough and nuanced theory of production in the maturing Web 2.0 era. Based on original ethnographic research, Banks convincingly shows how video production these days is the outcome of an evolutionary process between economic and cultural, commercial and noncommercial factors.

This series aims to provide students with historically-grounded and theoretically-informed studies of significant aspects of new media.

Virtual Reality Representations in Contemporary Media Melanie Chan During the 1980s to the 90s, virtual reality and cyberspace were represented, particularly in fiction, as a wondrous technology that enabled transcendence from the limitations of physical embodiment. The purpose of this critical historical analysis of representations of virtual reality is to examine how they might deny, repress or overlook embodied experience. Specifically, the author will contend that embodiment is a fundamental aspect of immersion in virtual reality, rather than something which is to be transcended. Elliott The goal of this collection is to focus on the ways in which gamers engage with, play with, recreate, subvert, reverse and direct the historical past, and what effect this has on the ways in which we go about constructing the present or imagining a future. What can WWII strategy games teach us about the reality of this complex and multifaceted period? Do the possibilities of playing with the past change the way we understand history? Drawing these threads together, this book concludes by asking whether digital games alter the way we, today, understand history itself. MATTHEW WILHELM KAPELL has graduate degrees in Biological Anthropology and History as well as a Ph.D. in American Studies. ANDREW ELLIOTT is a Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Lincoln, UK. Paul Wells

Paul Wells with Joanna Quinn and Les Mills

“This book is a must-have for the independent animator’s bookshelf.” Stop Motion Magazine

Drawing is a fundamental part of the preparatory stages of virtually all design-led projects; it is the core method by which ideas and concepts are envisaged and ultimately shared with collaborators, clients and audiences. This book introduces readers to the practice of drawing images for use in animation and examines the techniques involved with drawing characters, composition and movement, narrative and adaptation.

This book details the issues faced by the animation scriptwriter, and the techniques to overcome them. It also seeks to promote the unique qualities of animation as a form of expression, using many images to illustrate and emphasise points made in the text. The author looks at genres in animation as a starting point for scripting, employing a range of case studies from feature films to public relations work to independent productions. PAUL WELLS is Professor of Animation at Loughborough University, UK.

JOANNA QUINN’s work has received two Oscar nominations and won Emmys, Baftas, and Jury prizes worldwide. LES MILLS’ work has received an Oscar nomination and won three Emmys.

Nancy Beiman “Packed with amusing illustrations, inspiring anecdotes and lively examples, Beiman’s book acts as the kind of teacher we all wish we had in school.” Ramin Zahed, Animation Magazine This illustratd guide, written by a former Disney animator, demonstrates how species, weight and design can affect character actions, so that no two character performances are ever alike. It also examines the ways in which a character’s movements vary with the emotional or narrative context. Hundreds of thumbnail drawings show how cloth, paper, wood, animal, invertebrate, winged, aquatic and mechanical beings can live and move without losing their non-human qualities. A History of Disney Feature Animation

Explores the unique and fascinating combination of cinema, animation and games. Machinima makes for a very cost- and time-efficient way to produce films, with a large amount of creative control, by combining the techniques of filmmaking, animation production and the technology of real-time 3D game engines. With an opening preface by Henry Lowood, the leading academic studying Machinima, as well as a closing interview with Cao Fei, a Beijing-based artist who works mainly in Second Life, the collection features theoretical discussions addressing machinima from non-gaming perspectives.

A Study on Film and Reality in the Digital Age Eleftheria Thanouli Wag the Dog is a film that became a media event because it inadvertently short-circuited the distance that is supposed to separate reality and fiction. The film’s narration challenges the established boundaries between the fiction and nonfiction tradition, as Barry Levinson, the director, embeds his interest in documentary filmmaking and complicates the issue of narrative agency in the way he frames the story. The examination of the historical and social context in which it was produced, exhibited and received worldwide enables the author to illuminate a series of changes in the way a fiction film reflects and interacts with reality, urging us to reconsider some of our central and long-standing concepts or even paradigms in film theory. Drawing Borders The American-Canadian Relationship during the Gilded Age David R . Spencer Canada has not always had the role of ‘friendly neighbour to the north.’ In fact, the seemingly peaceful history of relations between the United States and Canada is punctuated with instances of border disputes, annexation manifestos and trade disagreements. This book reveals the complexity of this relationship through a fascinating examination of political cartoons that appeared both in the U.S. and Canada from 1849 through the 1990s. DAVID R. Mark H . Massé Witnessing acts of violence, destruction and terror has long been the professional responsibility of print and broadcast reporters and photographers. But what is new is a growing awareness of the emotional consequences of such coverage on the victims, their families, their communities, and on the journalists whose job it is to tell these stories. The author personalizes this movement with in-depth profiles of reporters, researchers and trauma experts engaged in an international effort to transform how the media work under the most difficult of conditions. Through biographical sketches concerning several traumatic events (Oklahoma City bombing, Columbine school tragedy, 9/11, Iraq War, the South Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina), readers will gain insights into the critical components of contemporary journalism practices affecting news judgment, news gathering techniques, as well as legal and ethical issues. Can We Still Trust the BBC?

Looking at a range of women’s magazines and magazine programmes, this book not only extends our definition of a magazine, but most importantly, unearths the connections between women’s cultures, specific magazines and the implied reader. The author first outlines the existing field of magazine studies, and analyzes the methodologies employed in accessing and assessing the cultural competence of magazines. Each chapter then provides a case study of a different kind of magazine: different in media form or style of presentation or audience connection, or all three. By broadening the scope of magazine studies in this way, it will be seen what a powerful and pervasive form this is, and how important it is to students of historical and contemporary women’s culture.

The Trojan Horse The Growth of Commercial Sponsorship Deborah Philips and Garry Whannel Traces the growth of commercial sponsorship in the public sphere since the 1960s, its growing importance for the arts since 1980 and its spread into areas such as education and health. The authors argue that the image of sponsorship as corporate benevolence has served to routinize and legitimate the presence of commerce within the public sector. The central metaphor is of such sponsorship as a Trojan horse helping to facilitate the hollowing out of the pubic sector by private agencies and private finance.

POLITICS IN FILM & MEDIA

textbook

Film, Texts, and New Media in the Classroom Edited by Robert W . Glover and Daniel Tagliarina To teach political issues such as political struggle, justice, and interstate conflict, educators rely mostly on textbooks and lectures. However, many other forms of narrative exist that can elevate our understanding of such issues. This innovative work seeks new ways to foster learning beyond the old model, by using creative and new media, including graphic novels, animated films, hip-hop music, Twitter, and more. Discussing the opportunities these media offer to teach and engage students about politics, the work presents concrete ways on how to use them, along with teaching and assessment strategies, all tested in the classroom. Black Comics Politics of Race and Representation Edited by Sheena C . Howard and Ronald L . Jackson II

The Cultural Politics of ‘Race’ and Ethnicity in Animation Walter Santucci and Kelly J . Madison While animated cartoons are generally regarded as harmless cinematic diversions, they, like all art forms, have generated controversy. The authors discuss what constitutes racist content, the social and political climates that foster such content (and make it acceptable to some), resistance to such content and also consider the pleas of white content creators who claim their films were not racist. Though many films are discussed, the authors focus on the 1940s and 1970s, as both are very fertile periods for racism in cartoons. From South Park to Kathy Acker, and from Lars Von Trier to Sex and the City, women’s sexual organs are demonized. Rees traces the fascinating evolution of this demonization, considering how calling the ‘c-word’ obscene both legitimates and perpetuates the fractured identities of women globally. Rees demonstrates how writers, artists, and filmmakers contend with the dilemma of the vagina’s puzzlingly ‘covert visibility.’

Edited by Shane Denson, Christina Meyer and Daniel Stein Exploring the tendencies of graphic narratives from popular comic book serials and graphic novels to manga to cross national and cultural boundaries, this book addresses a previously marginalized area in comics studies. Placing graphic narratives in the global flow of cultural production and reception, the author investigates controversial representations of transnational politics, examines transnational adaptations of superhero characters, and maps many of the translations and transformations that have come to shape contemporary comics culture on a global scale. Narcoepics A Global Aesthetics of Sobriety Hermann Herlinghaus “Through close reading of cultural narratives, Herlinghaus dramatizes the effects of the transnational narcotics trade on the body politic of the Global South.” Nancy D . Campbell, Professor, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), USA Dealing with literary works and films whose characteristics are linked to illicit global exchange, informal labor, violence, drug consumption, and ritualistic patterns of identity, this book argues for a new theoretical approach to better understand these “narratives of intoxication.” This comparative study looks at writers such as Gutiérrez, J. J. Rodríguez, Reverte, films such as City of God, and the narratives surrounding cultural villains/heroes such as Pablo Escobar. The Drift Affect, Adaptation, and New Perspectives on Fidelity John Hodgkins This book offers a new perspective on the complex interrelations between literature and cinema. It does so by articulating an ‘affective turn’ for adaptation studies, a field whose traditional focus has been the critical castigation of film adaptations of canonical plays or novels. Drawing on theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, Brian Massumi, and Marco Abel, the author is able to re-conceive literary and cinematic works as textual engines generating and circulating affect, and the adaptive process as a drifting of those affective intensities from one medium to another. Works discussed include John Dos Passos, Don DeLillo, and Susanna Moore, the films of Dziga Vertov and Sergei Eisenstein, as well as recent cinematic adaptations by Jane Campion and Charles Burnett. Post-Millennial Gothic Comedy, Romance and the Rise of ‘Happy Gothic’ Catherine Spooner Surveying the widespread appropriations of the Gothic in contemporary literature and culture, this book illustrates that contemporary Gothic is often romantic, funny and celebratory. Reading a wide range of popular texts, from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series through Tim Burton’s Gothic film adaptations of Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows, to the appearance of Gothic in fashion, advertising and television, the author argues that conventional academic and media accounts of Gothic culture have overlooked this celebratory strain of ‘Happy Gothic’. PHILOSOPHY IN FILM & MEDIA

PHILOSOPHY IN FILM & MEDIA Thinking Cinema Series Editors: David Martin-Jones, University of Glasgow, Scotland and Sarah Cooper, King’s College London, UK Publishes original, innovative monographs that explore encounters between film, philosophy, and theory. The series aims to promote research at the intersection of film and philosophical or theoretical ideas.

Deleuze, Japanese Cinema, and the Atom Bomb David Deamer Establishes the first ever sustained encounter between Gilles Deleuze’s Cinema books and post-war Japanese cinema, by exploring how Japanese films responded to and were transformed by the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. From the early days of the American occupation’s political censorship to the social and cultural freedoms of the 1960s and beyond, this book examines how images of these events permeate post-war Japanese cinema. Each chapter begins by focusing upon one of three key themes: taxonomy, history or thought, before going on to explore a broad selection of films from 1945 to the present day, including respected masterpieces (Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon); popular and cult cinema (Godzilla; world renowned anime, Akira); the new wave (Nagisa Oshima’s Night and Fog in Japan); and modern classics (Hideo Nakata’s Ring). Thinking Cinema as Post-Enlightenment Practice Thomas Elsaesser This groundbreaking inaugural volume for the ‘Thinking Cinema’ series focuses on the extent to which contemporary cinema contributes to political and philosophical thinking about the future of Europe’s core Enlightenment values. In light of the challenges of globalization, multi-cultural communities and post-nation state democracy, the book explores the borders of ethics and politics and roots itself in debates about post-secular, postEnlightenment philosophy. Discussing key filmmakers and philosophers like Claire Denis and Jean-Luc Nancy; Aki Kaurismäki, abjection and Julia Kristeva; Michael Haneke, the paradoxes of Christianity and Slavoj Zizek; Fatih Akin, Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière, the author is able to approach European cinema and assesses its key questions within a global context. Posthumanism

Cinema and Agamben

A Critical Analysis

Ethics, Biopolitics and the Moving Image

Stefan Herbrechter What does it mean to be human today? The answer to this question is becoming less and less certain. Current technological developments increasingly erode our traditional humanist reflexes: consciousness, emotion, language, intelligence, morality, humour, mortality—all these no longer demonstrate the unique character and value of human existence. Instead, the spectre of the ‘posthuman’ is now being widely invoked as the ‘inevitable’ next evolutionary stage that humans are facing: Who comes after the human? This critical introduction understands posthumanism as a discourse and outlines the genealogy of the various posthuman ‘scenarios’ and engages with their theoretical and philosophical assumptions and social and political implications. European Cinema and Contemporary Philosophy

Edited by Asbjørn Grønstad and Henrik Gustafsson A collection of original essays that bring together a group of established and emerging scholars of film and visual culture for an innovative study of contemporary film theory and philosophy. Refracting current conceptions of the moving image through the influential work of Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, these essays facilitate a unique multidisciplinary conversation that fundamentally rethinks the theory and praxis of cinema. In their resourceful analyses of the work of artists such as David Claerbout, Marcel Duchamp, JeanLuc Godard, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jean Rouch, Richard Serra, Susanne Winterling and others, the authors put to use a number of the key concepts from Agamben’s rich body of work: biopolitics, de-creation, dispositif, gesture, the messianic, and profanation, to name a few. bestseller

Forms and Functions of Female Celebrity Edited by Diane Negra and Su Holmes This timely collection explores the politics of female celebrity across a range of contemporary and historical media contexts by forging a greater conceptual, theoretical and historical dialogue between celebrity studies and critical gender studies. It takes as its starting point the understanding that female celebrity is a particularly fraught cultural phenomenon with ideological and industrial implications that warrant careful scrutiny. In moving across case studies from the 19th century to the present day, this book works from the assumption that the case study should play a crucial role in generating debate about the dialogue between ‘past’ and ‘present’, and the individual essays seek to reflect this spirit of enquiry. Real Lives and Celebrity Stories Narratives of Ordinary and Extraordinary People Across Media Edited by Julia Round and Bronwen Thomas From reality television to celebrity gossip magazines, today’s technologies have enabled a vast number of personal narratives that document our existence and that of others. While news journalists still pursue the authentic narrative, advertising and politics might be accused of exploiting the narrative tendency, and across media the personal and public become increasingly merged. This volume collects research from professionals who discuss narratives of real people across cultures and history and in multiple media. It uses narrative theory to interrogate the processes by which we create, promote and consume these stories of real people, and the ways in which we construct our own stories of self. By bringing together different disciplines it offers a theory of the production(s) of self in public spaces such as music, literature, fanfic, television, cinema, comics, news media, journalism, and politics.

Fame Attack The Inflation of Celebrity and its Consequences Chris Rojek The follow up to Rojek’s Celebrity, this book assesses celebrity culture today. The book gives a new emphasis to the role of the media and public relations in engineering fame, and the psychological consequences of celebrity notably Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Celebrity Worship Syndrome. Understanding Fandom

textbook

An Introduction to the Study of Media Fan Culture Mark Duffett While fans used to be seen as an overly obsessed fringe audience, shifts in technology in the last few decades have made fandom a central mode of media consumption. This volume includes insights from research linked to many kinds of media, including television and popular music fandom. With a foreword by Matt Hills, this book introduces the emerging field of Fan Studies by looking at the history of debate, key paradigms and methodogical issues. It draws together a range of debates from media studies, cultural studies and psychology to argue that fandom is particular kind of an engagement with the power relations of media culture. Murders and Acquisitions Representations of the Serial Killer in Popular Culture Edited by Alzena MacDonald The ‘serial killer’ has become increasingly prevalent in popular culture, particularly through the media of film and television, since the term was coined by Robert Ressler at the FBI in the mid-1970s. This collection argues that the serial killer performs a unique role, specifically within the genres of horror and detective/crime fiction, and that representations of the serial killer function to address contemporary concerns and preoccupations. Focusing on wellknown popular culture, such as The Wire, American Psycho, Monster, Criminal Minds, and Dexter, the collection engages with both relevant cultural theory and critical textual analysis of TV series, films, prose, and fan productions to examine the various sophisticated ways the serial killer is deployed to mediate and/or work through cultural anxieties and fears. Screen Fictions and Discourses of Disability Dodgy Discourse and the Moral Low Ground Margaret Montgomerie Political correctness often stifles discussion and diffuses the potential value of representations of disability to interrogate our prejudices and assumptions. Through an exploration of the impact of popular screen representations of disabled people, and a series of interviews with Disability Studies academics, activists and students, this book considers what is at stake in being entertained by, researching and writing about media representations of disabled people. This book promotes the study of disability as part of the media curriculum in much the same way as studies of race, gender, class and sexuality are seen as pivotal to the identity of the subject.
