Welcome to Bloomsbury History Welcome to the new History catalogue. As you will have noticed, for the first time this catalogue is coming out under the Bloomsbury name instead of the separate Continuum, Berg, and Bloomsbury Academic imprints. We wanted to give you some background to this rebranding. In 2008, Bloomsbury decided to invest in building a new academic division. Growth since that decision was taken has been very rapid: we now publish around 1,100 titles each year, with a particularly big presence in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and our backlist comprises some 20,000 titles. The purchase of Continuum in 2011 was a key part of this growth. We believe we are stronger as a group, which is why we have taken the strategic decision to adopt the Bloomsbury name for all academic titles that we publish. With effect from 1st September 2012, all new Continuum titles will be published under the Bloomsbury brand. The same applies to all Berg and Bristol Classical Press titles, as of 1st January 2013. This will make it easier for you to find quality history publishing, rather than navigating across a number of imprints. The values of Continuum, Berg and other imprints which you have appreciated over the years are already integral to the larger entity that is Bloomsbury. Much has changed over the past 12 months, but we remain as committed to our authors and to publishing the same high quality textbooks, course books, research monographs, reference works, professional and general interest books, journals and online resources.

Publishing in Print and Digital Bloomsbury leads the way in digital publishing, for example with the launch of the Churchill Archive in autumn 2012 (p.33). Providing an essential research and teaching tool, it has made more than 800,000 pages of key historical documents from the twentieth century available online for the first time. Please take a moment to go to www.churchillarchive.com, and don’t forget to recommend this resource to your library if you like what you see!

Highlights In this catalogue, you’ll find new editions of our key texts in historical method and historiography, with Ludmila Jordanova’s History in Practice (p.3) and Pat Hudson’s History by Numbers (p.3). Our Writing History series continues to grow, with the publication of Writing the History of Memory (p.3). New students texts in European history include new editions of Germany by Stefan Berger (p.15) and A History of Eastern Europe 1740-1918 by Ian D. Armour (p.15), as well as the first publication of several key titles, including The Rise of Western Power (p.15), Ireland’s History (p.14) and The Holocaust and Genocides in Europe (p.15). We’d also like to draw your attention to our exciting Cultural Histories series: illustrated 6-volume sets on key aspects of cultural history, with two new titles, A Cultural History of Women and A Cultural History of Gardens publishing this year and more new publishing to come in the series in the future.

New Website Finally we are delighted to announce the launch of a new global Bloomsbury website: www.bloomsbury.com. This site brings together everything under the Bloomsbury Group, including Continuum, Berg, Methuen Drama, Arden Shakespeare, T&T Clark, Bristol Classical Press, and A&C Black titles. The site features enhanced academic functionality such as online previews, digital inspection copies, textbook companion sites and online resources. Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Tom Holland Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire sees Tom Holland write an authoritative introduction to the writing style of celebrated historian Edward Gibbon and his masterwork, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Holland then selects a number of extracts from Gibbon’s opus, including the Vindication as well as chapters 15 and 16, that exemplify the famous historian’s genius and that help to illustrate the illuminating points Holland makes about Gibbon, his work and history writing in general over the course of the introduction. Oral History in the Visual Arts Edited by Matthew Partington and Linda Sandino This groundbreaking text demonstrates how artists, writers and historians deploy interviews as creative practice, as ‘history’, and as a means to insights into the micro-practices of arts production and identity that contribute to questions of ‘voice’, authenticity, and authorship. Oral History in the Visual Arts is essential reading for students, researchers and practitioners across the visual arts.

Philosophy of History After Hayden White Edited by Robert Doran This anthology of new essays, by an international group of preeminent scholars, explores the groundbreaking work of Hayden White, whose thought, beginning with his seminal Metahistory (1973), has revolutionised the way we think about the philosophy of history, historiography, narrative, and the relation between history and literature. Representing a variety of disciplines and approaches, the contributions to this volume testify to the farreaching effects and significance of White’s philosophy of history. Individual essays relate White’s ideas to contemporary art, cognitive studies, Heideggerian hermeneutics, experimental history, Kant’s transcendental philosophy, analytic philosophy of history, Marxist cultural theory, the Kantian sublime, and American academic historiography. The First English Revolution

Medieval Intrigue

Simon de Montfort, Henry III and the Barons’ War Adrian Jobson

Decoding Royal Conspiracies Ian Mortimer

Simon de Montfort, the leader of the English barons, was the first leader of a political movement to seize power from a reigning monarch. The charismatic de Montfort and his forces had captured most of south-eastern England by 1263 and at the battle of Lewes in 1264 King Henry III was defeated and taken prisoner. De Montfort became de facto ruler of England and the short period which followed was the closest England was to come to complete abolition of the monarchy until Oliver Cromwell’s Commonwealth. The Parliament of 1265 − known as De Montfort’s Parliament − was the first English parliament to have elected representatives. Only fifteen months later de Montfort’s gains were reversed when Prince Edward escaped captivity and defeated the rebels at the Battle of Evesham. Simon de Montfort was killed. Adrian Jobson captures the intensity of de Montfort’s radical crusade through these most revolutionary years in English history in this spirited and dramatic narrative. ADRIAN JOBSON was formerly Senior Medieval Records Specialist at the National Archives. He has given many academic papers on the age of reform and rebellion and has recently edited the volume English Government in the Thirteenth Century. Saint Augustine of Hippo An Intellectual Biography Miles Hollingworth Augustine was one of the West's first public philosophers. Intellectually brilliant and a gifted writer, he is known as one of the great figures of Christian antiquity. This biography is written for scholars and students but also for the huge number of intelligent lay readers for whom Augustine is a towering figure in the history of Western civilisation. It does not set out to understand Augustine’s life in terms of any particular agenda. Its course is directed by the plain narrative of Augustine’s life. This narrative is the key to Augustine’s most challenging ideas − Original Sin, Grace and Predestination. For it should be remembered that Augustine himself lived through the process of death and resurrection described in his famous doctrine of The Two Cities − the doctrine that is his most emphatic statement on man, society and God. MILES HOLLINGWORTH is Research Fellow in the History of Ideas at St. John’s College, Durham, UK. His writing on Augustine has won awards from the Society of Authors (2009 Elizabeth Longford Grant for Historical Biography) and the Royal Society of Literature (2009 Jerwood Award for Non-Fiction). bestseller

“Ian Mortimer is the most remarkable medieval historian of our time.” The Times In this important work Ian Mortimer examines some of the most controversial questions in medieval history, including whether Edward II was murdered, his possible later life in Italy, the weakness of the Lancastrian claim to the throne in 1399 and the origins of the idea of the royal pretender. Central to this book is his ground-breaking approach to medieval evidence. He explains how an information-based method allows a more certain reading of a series of texts. He criticises existing modes of arriving at consensus and outlines a process of historical analysis that ultimately leads to questioning historical doubts as well as historical facts, with profound implications for what we can say about the past with certainty.

The Three Richards

bestseller

Richard I, Richard II and Richard III Nigel Saul The three Richards who ruled England in the Middle Ages were among the most controversial and celebrated of its rulers. Richard I (‘Coeur de Lion’, 1189-99) was a great crusading hero; Richard II (1377-99) was an authoritarian aesthete deposed by his cousin, Henry IV, and murdered; while Richard III (1483-85), as the murderer of his nephews, ‘The Princes in the Tower’, was the most notorious villain in English history. This highly readable joint biography shows how much the three kings had in common, apart from their names. All were younger sons of monarchs, not expected to come to the throne; all failed to leave a legitimate heir, causing instability on their deaths; all were cultured and pious; and all died violently. All have attracted accusations but also fascination. In comparing them, Nigel Saul tells three gripping stories and shows what it took to be a medieval king. NIGEL SAUL is Professor of History at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK, and the author of a biography of Richard II. The Prehistory of the Crusades

Gender in Medieval Culture

Missionary War and the Baltic Crusades Burnam W. Reynolds

Michelle M. Sauer

There is a vigorous debate on the exact beginnings of the Crusades, as well as a growing conviction that some practices of crusading may have been in existence, at least in part, long before they were identified as such. This volume focuses on the Baltic, or Northern, Crusades and interrogates one line of development in the formation of the idea of the crusade: the use of aggressive warfare as a tool for christianizing pagan lands and peoples. The book explores the sanctification of war in creating the ideal of crusade, and in so doing explains how crusading ultimately developed in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. BURNAM W. REYNOLDS is Professor of History at Asbury University, USA. UK September 2013 • US November 2013 224 pages PB 9781441143891 • £18.99 / $32.95 HB 9781441155603 • £60.00 / $110.00 Individual eBook 9781441150080 • £18.99 / $23.99 Library eBook 9781441150394 • £60.00 / $110.00

The First Crusade and the Idea of Crusading

This volume provides a detailed examination of medieval society’s views on both gender and sexuality, and shows how they are inextricably linked. Sex roles were clearly defined in the medieval world although there were exceptions to the rules, and this book examines both the commonplace world view and the exceptions to it. As both ecclesiastical and secular laws governed behaviour the volume looks not only at the social and economic considerations of gender but also the religious and legal implications. Using a clear chapter structure for easy navigation and categorisation, as well as chapter summaries and a glossary of terms, topics covered include femininity and masculinity and how medieval society constructed these terms; sexuality and sex; alternative sexualities such as homosexuality, adultery and chastity; and the gendered body of Christ, including the idea of Jesus as mother and affective spirituality. MICHELLE M. SAUER is Associate Professor in the Department of English, at the University of North Dakota, USA.

He discusses the launching of the First Crusade, Pope Urban’s message, the practical experience of the crusaders and the interpretation of this experience by historians since. A new introduction places the work in the context of changing thought and research by medieval historians. The Medieval English Landscape, 1000-1540 Graeme J. White “This book, which will appeal to both students and scholars alike, fills a gap in the subject dealing as it does with the full range of structures to be found in the medieval countryside … It provides an upto-date and lively discussion of the development of the medieval landscape from the pre-Conquest period to the Reformation and will swiftly become a standard text for those interested in the subject.” Dr. Robert Liddiard, University of East Anglia, UK Opening with a broad-ranging analysis of political and economic trends in medieval England, this book progresses thematically to assess the impact of farming, rural settlements, towns, the Church, and fortification using many original case studies. The concluding chapter charts the end of the medieval landscape with the dissolution of the monasteries, the replacement of castles by country houses, the ongoing enclosure of fields, and the growth of towns. Inventing Eleanor

Literature and Culture in Late Byzantine Thessalonica

The Medieval and Post-Medieval Image of Eleanor of Aquitaine Michael R. Evans

Eugenia Russell

Eleanor of Aquitaine (1124-1204), queen of France and England and mother of two kings, has often been described as one of the most remarkable women of the Middle Ages. Yet her real achievements have been embellished − and even obscured − by myths that have grown up over eight centuries. She has been variously viewed as an adulterous queen, a monstrous mother, and a jealous murderess, but also as a patron of literature, champion of courtly love, and protofeminist defender of women’s rights. This volume interrogates the myths that have grown up around the figure of Eleanor of Aquitaine and investigates how and why historians and artists have invented an Eleanor who is very different from the twelfth-century queen. MICHAEL R. EVANS has lectured in medieval history at several universities in Britain and the United States. He is currently Assistant Professor at Central Michigan University, USA.

This volume sets out the political and commercial landscape of Thessalonica between 1303 and 1430, when the city fell to the Ottoman Turks, before focusing on the literary and hymnographical aspects of the city's cultural history and its legacy. The cosmopolitan nature of urban life in Thessalonica, the polyphony of opinions it experienced and expressed, its multiple links with centres such as Constantinople, Adrianople, Athos, Lemnos and Lesvos, and the diversity and strength of its authorial voices make the study of the city's cultural life a vital part of our understanding of the Byzantine Eastern Mediterranean.

Western Perspectives on the Mediterranean

Intercultural Transmission in the Medieval Mediterranean

Cultural Transfer in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, 400-800 AD Edited by Andreas Fischer and Ian Wood

Edited by Stephanie L. Hathaway and David W. Kim This volume presents evidence of the extent and effects of intercultural contacts across Europe and the Mediterranean rim, opening up a new understanding of early medieval civilisation and its continuing influence in both Western and Eastern cultures today. From the perspectives of textual transmission, cultural memory, religion, art and cultural traditions, this work explores the central question of how ideas travelled in the medieval world, challenging the conventional notion of insular communities in the Middle Ages. It contributes to new perspectives on medieval cities, Christian Europe’s history with the Byzantine and Islamic Mediterranean, the landscape of power and the power-plays of the medieval Church, and the way in which crosscultural transmission affected all of these areas. STEPHANIE L. HATHAWAY is currently lecturing at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford, UK. DAVID W. KIM is Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, UK. UK August 2012 • US October 2012 208 pages HB 9781441139085 • £65.00 / $120.00 Individual eBook 9781441131249 • £19.99 / $23.99 Library eBook 9781441133182 • £65.00 / $120.00

Based on close analyses of contemporary texts, and backed by an examination of the origins of the elements transferred and of the process of transmission, the contributors to this volume focus on the perception and adaptation of knowledge and cultural elements in the West. Taking a variety of approaches, they shed light on the changing lines of communication between the Byzantine empire and other parts of the Mediterranean, on the one hand, and the Burgundian, Frankish and Anglo-Saxon realms and the Papacy on the other. Religion and Conflict in the Tudor Reformations Eamon Duffy

A Life David Loades

In this wide-ranging book, Eamon Duffy explores the broad sweep of the English Reformation, and the ways in which that Reformation has been written about. Tracing the fraught history of religious change in Tudor England, and the retellings of that history to shape a protestant national identity, he emphasises the importance of the study of late medieval religion and material culture for our understanding of this most formative and fascinating of eras. Getting to grips with the misconceptions, discontinuities and dilemmas which have dogged the history of Tudor religion, Duffy traces the lived experience of Catholicism in an age of upheaval: from what it meant to be a Catholic in early Tudor England; through the nature of militant Catholicism at the height of the conflict; to the after-life of Tudor Catholicism and the ways in which the ‘old religion’ was remembered and spoken about in the England of Shakespeare. Duffy writes at all times with grace, elegance and wit as he questions prejudices and myths about the Reformation, to demonstrate that the truth about the past is never pure nor simple. EAMON DUFFY is Professor of the History of Christianity at the University of Cambridge, UK, and a Fellow of Magdalene College. His most recent book was Fires of Faith (2009). The Tudors

bestseller

History of a Dynasty

David Loades “Will prove a valuable text for the reader wishing to study the period, rather than immersing themselves merely in the personalities and events of the age.” The Bookbag David Loades provides a masterful overview of this formative period of British history. Exploring the reign of each monarch within the framework of the dynasty, he unpacks the key questions surrounding the monarchy; the relationship between church and the state, development of government, war and foreign policy, the question of Ireland and the issue of succession in Tudor politics. DAVID LOADES is one of the leading historians of the Tudor monarchy. He is the author of the definitive biography of Elizabeth's half-sister, Mary Tudor: A Life (1989), and of The Tudor Court (second edition, 2003). He is Honorary Research Professor at the University of Sheffield, UK, and Director of the British Academy John Foxe Project. Superstition and Magic in Early Modern Europe: A Reader Helen Parish In recent decades research into witchcraft and magic has expanded alongside a deepening understanding of early modern popular culture and belief. The result is a much more nuanced appreciation of how such beliefs were woven into the fabric of society, and of the degree to which early modern religion, superstition and magic were intertwined. Recent research has facilitated a more detailed and comprehensive understanding of these themes, and this volume demonstrates the richness of the historiography, and the significance of superstition, magic, and popular belief to our understanding of early modern popular culture. The result of a four year research project, it traces the output and dissemination of books and how reading tastes changed in the years 1769-1794. Mapping the book trade of the Société Typographique de Neuchâtel (STN), a Swiss publisher-wholesaler which operated throughout Europe, the authors reconstruct the cosmopolitan elite culture of the later enlightenment, incorporating many engaging case studies. By means of comparative study, the author considers the entire book market across Europe, making local, regional and chronological nuances, based on advanced taxonomies of subject content, author information, markers of illegality and much more. Crime and Poverty in 19th-Century England The Economy of Makeshifts Adrian Ager Using innovative quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques, this book looks in detail at some of the causal factors that motivated the poorer classes to commit crime, or act in ways that transgressed acceptable standards of behaviour. It demonstrates how the strategies that these individuals employed varied between urban and rural environments, and shows how the poor railed against legislative reforms that threatened the solvency of their households. The Swing Riots and Rural Parish Relations The ‘Moral Economy’ of the English Poor in Early Nineteenth Century England Peter Jones The so-called ‘Swing riots’ that swept southern England in the autumn of 1830 are unique in the history of English popular protest and social relations. This book explores the nature and the meaning of Swing as a protest movement. Peter Jones looks in detail at the lives of those who took part in the protests, showing how Swing only makes sense as a local phenomenon, and that each ‘moment’ of protest activity can only be understood within the specific local context within which it took place. Anglo-American Crossroads

The Foundations of the British Conservative Party

Urban Planning and Research in Britain, 1940-2010 Mark Clapson The postwar British city has been shaped by many international forces during the last century, but American influences on British urban research and urban planning have been particularly significant. Beginning with debates about reconstruction during the Second World War, Anglo-American Crossroads explores how Americanisation influenced key approaches to town planning, from reconstruction after 1945 to the New Urbanism of the 1990s. MARK CLAPSON is Reader in History in the Department of Social and Historical Studies at Westminster University, UK.

Edited by Bradley W. Hart and Richard Carr This collection of essays, written by leading scholars in British political history, offers insights into the Conservative Party’s staying power in spite of great social and political changes in the UK and the world. The Labour Party and the Free Churches 1918-1939

Monarchy, Magic and Democracy The Royal Family and Modern Britain A.J. Olechnowicz This volume examines the monarchy’s role in the political, religious and social life of the nation from the accession of Victoria in 1837 to Elizabeth II. It presents and critically examines the existing monographic literature; advances current perspectives through the presentation of new research; proposes and develops new perspectives on the basis of new archival and other research; and explores these themes not over the course of a single reign but over the period from 1837 to the present day.

The Distinctiveness of British Socialism Peter Catterall The Labour Party and the Free Churches explores how during the interim years the party formalised, replaced the Liberals as the main party of the Left in Britain, and created a boundary between itself and the recently formed Communist Party. Peter Catterall demonstrates the influence on political Nonconfirmity on these developments, through the ideological, political and electoral relationship between the Free Churches and the Labour Party.

A.J. OLECHNOWICZ is Lecturer in the Department of History at Durham University, UK. He has research interests in the social and cultural history of nineteenth and twentieth century Britain.

PETER CATTERALL is Lecturer in the History Department at Queen Mary, University of London, UK, and Lecturer in democracy and public policy at the Hansard Society.

The Great Famine

Leningrad “Impeccably researched, well-paced and beautifully written” Financial Times On 8 September 1941, eleven short weeks after Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa, his brutal surprise attack on the Soviet Union, Leningrad was surrounded. The siege would not be lifted for two and a half years and during the 872 days of blockade and bombardment as many as two million Soviet lives would be lost. Had the city fallen, the history of the Second World War − and of the twentieth century − would have been very different. Leningrad is a gripping narrative history interwoven with personal stories − immediate accounts of daily siege life drawn from diarists and memoirists on both sides. In Leningrad, Anna Reid answers many of the previously unanswered questions about the siege. ANNA REID started her career in consultancy and business journalism; from 1993 to 1995 she lived in Kiev, working as Ukraine correspondent for the Economist, and from 2003 to 2007 ran the foreign affairs programme at the think-tank Policy Exchange.

Charity and the Great Hunger in Ireland The Kindness of Strangers Christine Kinealy The Irish Famine was the first national disaster to attract international attention and charitable donations. The response was immediate and the first to send money were British citizens in Calcutta. The Quakers were instrumental in raising funds and establishing soup kitchens. Lionel de Rothschild founded the British Relief Association and raised funds from as far afield as Venezuela and Australia. Throughout 1847, subscriptions to Ireland also came from some the poorest people in the world including former Caribbean slaves, convicts and Native Americans. This book examines the role of worldwide charities and personal donations during the Famine.

Medical Muses Hysteria in Nineteenth-Century Paris Asti Hustvedt “This is a riveting study of the great iconic stars of the Salpêtrière, as famous in the belle epoque for their hysteria as celebrities today are for their excesses. Asti Hustvedt probes the records to bring to life the stories of Blanche, Augustine and Genevieve as well as their brilliant doctor, Jean Martin Charcot. In the process, she gives their historic diagnosis new contemporary meaning” Lisa Appignanesi Hysteria as a disease no longer exists, but in the nineteenth century hysteria was thought to affect half of all women in one of its myriad forms. In 1862 the famous and infamous Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, under the reign of renowned neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, became the focal point for study of the mysterious illness. Charcot’s studies at the hospital were controversial, and brought him into conflict with the church as well as his colleagues. Medical Muses tells the stories of Blanche, Augustine and Geneviève, young women who found themselves in Charcot’s ward as medical celebrities. The Habsburgs

Britain and France in Two World Wars

The History of a Dynasty Benjamin Curtis

Truth, Myth and Memory Edited by Robert Tombs and Emile Chabal

The Habsburgs rank among the most celebrated ruling dynasties in history. At one point, their territories stretched not only across Europe but into Asia, Africa and the Americas. In the nineteenth century the operatic last act of the family’s history encompassed revolution, suicide and the notorious assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which precipitated the First World War. The story of the Habsburgs is not only theatrical and compelling; it is vital to an understanding of how the nations and national identities of modern Central Europe came into being.

France and Britain, indispensable allies in two world wars, remember and forget their shared history in contrasting ways. The book examines key episodes in the relationship between the two countries, including the outbreak of war in 1914, the battles of the Somme and Verdun, the Fall of France in 1940, Dunkirk, and British involvement in the French Resistance and the 1944 Liberation. The contributors discuss how the two countries tend to forget what they owe to each other, and have a distorted view of history which still colours and prejudices their relationship today, despite government efforts to build a close political and military partnership.

The Practice of Extinction Nicholas Terry Drawing on a wide variety of new sources, including hitherto unknown documents and testimonies, this book describes and analyses the process of mass murder at Auschwitz. Chronicling the evolution of the practice of extinction, this book shows how contingency, improvisation and genocidal bricolage marked out the course of the ‘Final Solution’ at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Using the perspectives of both the SS perpetrators as well as the camp inmates forced to participate in the design, construction and operation of the gas chambers and crematoria, the book asks fresh questions about the motivation, meanings and significance of extermination and the roles of deception and secrecy in making mass murder possible. NICHOLAS TERRY is Teaching Fellow in Modern History at the University of Exeter, UK.

Rethinking the Weimar Republic Authority and Authoritarianism 1916-1936 Anthony McElligott Anthony McElligott’s new study challenges conventional approaches to the history of the Weimar Republic. Taking as its premise that neither 1918 nor 1933 constituted distinctive breaks in early twentieth-century German history, Rethinking the Weimar Republic stretches the chronological-political parameters of the Republic from 1916 to 1936. As well as rethinking topics of traditional concern for historians of the Republic, such as the economy, Article 48, the Nazi vote and political violence, McElligott also discusses hitherto neglected areas, such as provincial life and politics, the role of law and Republican cultural politics.

Queer Cities, Queer Cultures Europe since 1945 Edited by Matt Cook and Jennifer V. Evans Through a series of urban case studies, this book examines the articulation of particular subcultures and forms of expression with the broader stories we tell about postwar Europe and particular watershed moments. It considers queer life in the selected cities in relation to the advent and end of Cold War polarisation, and considers the degree to which the iconic events of 1945, 1968, and 1989 influenced the social and sexual climate of the ensuing decades. It raises questions about the form and structure of the 1960s sexual revolution, and forces us to think about how we define sexual liberalisation and where, how and on whose terms it occurs. The book also explores the role of America in shaping particular forms of subculture. Hitler’s Scandinavian Legacy Edited by John Gilmour and Jill Stephenson The Scandinavian countries' war experience fundamentally changed how each nation functioned in the post-war world by altering political structures, the dynamics of their societies, the interrelationships between the countries and the popular view of moral responses to totalitarian threats. Hitler was no respecter of the rights of the Scandinavian nations but he and his associates dealt surprisingly differently with each of them. In the post-war period, this has caused problems of interpretation for political and cultural historians alike. Drawing on the latest research, this volume will be a welcome addition to the comparative histories on Scandinavia and the Second World War. JOHN GILMOUR is Honorary Fellow in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Edinburgh, UK. He is the author of Sweden, the Swastika and Stalin (2010). British Liberators in the Age of Napoleon Volunteering under the Spanish Flag in the Peninsular War Graciela Iglesias Rogers This book unveils the role of a hitherto unrecognised group of men who, long before the International Brigades made its name in the Spanish Civil War, also found reasons to fight under the Spanish flag. Their enemy was not fascism, but what could be at times an equally overbearing ideology: Napoleon’s imperialism. Many of the works published about the Peninsular War in the last two decades have adopted an Anglocentric narrative, writing the Spanish forces out of victories, or have tended to present the war, not as much won by the allies, but lost by the French. This book takes a radically different approach by drawing on previously untapped archival sources to argue that victory was the outcome of a truly transnational effort. Victims and Survivors of Nazi Human Experiments Science and Suffering in the Holocaust Paul Weindling Paul Weindling bases this study on the reconstruction of a victim group through individual victims’ life histories, and by weaving the victims’ experiences collectively together in terms of different groupings, especially gender, ethnicity and religion, age, and nationality. The experiments are linked, more broadly, to major elements in the dynamic and fluid Nazi power structure and the implementation of racial policies. A Battle for Neutral Europe British Cultural Propaganda during the Second World War Edward Corse A Battle for Neutral Europe describes and analyses the forgotten story of the British government’s cultural propaganda organisation, the British Council, in its campaign to win the hearts and minds of people in neutral Europe during the Second World War. The book draws on a range of previously unused material from archives from across Europe and private memoirs to provide a unique insight into the work of the leading British artists, scientists, musicians and other cultural figures who travelled to Spain, Portugal, Sweden and Turkey at great personal risk to promote British life and thought in a time of war. Kennedy

American Jewry

A Cultural History of an American Icon Mark White

Transcending the European Experience? Edited by Cornelia Wilhelm and Christian Wiese

Unlike the vast majority of leaders in the history of not only the United States but elsewhere, John F. Kennedy became a star. When most people recall him today, it is the seductive appeal of his image that first comes to mind. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including television, film, music, magazines and newspapers, Mark White demonstrates how Kennedy managed to represent traditional values synonymous with the 1950s whilst at the same time embodying the sense of change ushered in by the 1960s. This book analyses the historical, cultural and social experience of American Jewry from 1654 to the present day, and evaluates the relationship between European and American Jewish history. Internationally-renowned scholars come together to present new research on how immigration from Western and Eastern Europe established a new and distinctively American Jewish identity that went beyond the traditions of Europe, yet remained attached in many ways to its European origins.

Dr Willis in Japan 1862-1877: British Medical Pioneer Hugh Cortazzi This is a fascinating account of the fifteen years spent in Japan by William Willis, a British medical pioneer. Quite apart from the importance of his reports on medical practice and the spread of Western medicine, Dr Willis, who worked with the British Legation until 1868, was also a notable eyewitness to many historic occasions. Dr Willis’s letters to his family in Ireland are quoted extensively. Kipling’s Japan Edited by Hugh Cortazzi and George Webb Kipling visited Japan in 1889 and 1892. No other leading English literary figure of his day spent so long in that country or wrote so fully about it. Kipling’s newspaper despatches from Japan were decsribed by the great Japanologist Basil Han Chamberlain as ‘the most graphic ever penned by a globetrotter’. These vivid pen-pictures, together with Kipling’s other writings about Japan, are now collected by Sir Hugh Cortazzi and George Webb, carefully edited with an introduction and notes. Japan and the City of London Paul Newall From an insider’s position, Sir Paul Newall tells the story of Japan’s links with the City of London and explains why the City was first chosen by Japan as the focal point for its overseas financial investment. Japan: The Dutch Experience Grant Kohn Goodman This revision of Professor Goodman's earlier work, The Dutch Impact on Japan, originally published in 1967, was brought up-to-date with much new information in 1986 in response to renewed interest in the Dutch influence on Japan during the so-called 'closed centuries' between 1640 and 1853. Professor Goodman explains the circumstances of the Dutch in Japan during the seventeenth century, and the historical and intellectual milieu within which 'Dutch studies' were nurtured. He traces the initial interest of the Shogun government in European astronomy and medicine, and the gradual development of interest to wider spheres of Western knowledge and culture. Land Reform in Japan Ronald Dore The land reform carried out in Japan during the period of American Occupation is often spoken of as one of the most successful of the post-war reforms. It was certainly one of the most thorough redistributions of land which the world has seen. A third of the total area of arable land changed hands, and nearly a third of the total population of the country was affected. Socially, the land reform accelerated the decay in feudal institutions, rendering the lot of the Japanese farmer considerably better than it once was. Showa An Inside History of Hirohito’s Japan Tessa Morris-Suzuki Showa, Japanese for ‘radiant peace’, was the name given to Emperor Hirohito’s reign at his accession in 1926. This was the beginning of a significant period of growth of militarism, the Pacific war and the phenomenal post-war economic expansion of Japan. The first book to present modern Japanese history through the eyes of individuals, Showa presents the experiences of three individuals born at the beginning of this age, giving a unique inside view of Japan’s recent history. Their experiences include training as a suicide pilot, being a draft evader during the Pacific War, a leader in the Communist Party, and a colonist in Korea, turned overnight in August 1945 from a member of the ruling elite into a refugee. “A first class work of history” Lloyds List Lieutenant Colonel Philip Toosey was the senior British officer concerned with the building of the notorious “Bridge over the River Kwai”. Toosey understood from the very beginning that the only real issue was how to ensure that as many of his men as possible should survive their captivity. Many thousands who knew how Toosey stood up to their oppressors at great personal risk were incensed by Alec Guinness’s brilliant portrayal of ‘Colonel Nicholson’ in the film version of Boulle’s book. This book provides an accurate historical account of the terrible events during which more than 16,000 PoWs died while building the Thai-Burma railway, of which “the bridge” formed an essential part. A memorial to Toosey, this book is also a definitive history of the building of the railway in the context of the Far Eastern theatre of World War II. Japan Since 1945

South Africa

From Postwar to Post-Bubble Edited by Timothy S. George and Christopher Gerteis Does Japan really matter anymore? The challenges of recent Japanese history have led some pundits and scholars to publicly wonder whether Japan’s significance is starting to wane. The multidisciplinary essays that comprise Japan Since 1945 demonstrate its ongoing importance and relevance. Examining the historical context to the social, cultural, and political underpinnings of Japan’s postwar development, the contributors reengage earlier discourses and introduce new veins of research. Japan Since 1945 provides a much needed update to existing scholarly work on the history of contemporary Japan. TIMOTHY S. Alexander Johnston This book is an exploration of nation-building in post-apartheid South Africa. Sandy Johnston tracks the rise of the ANC and the idea of nationalism to the ‘critical moment’ of 1990-1994 when the end of communism and the cold war triggered an ethnonationalist resurgence. He then explores the place nationalism inhabits in the ‘new’ South Africa, asking whether there is such a thing as the South African nation at all. In doing so, he investigates both the political framework of constitution and competing agendas and the cultural context of language, memory and identity. Alexander JOHNSTON was Professor of Political Science at the University of Natal, South Africa, before retiring as head of school in 2002. For the next five years he worked at the Centre for Development and Enterprise in Johannesburg, a public policy research and advocacy NGO, for whom he is still a consultant. Developing the Rivers of East and West Africa An Environmental History Heather J. Hoag Drawing upon examples from across the African continent, Developing the Rivers of East and West Africa explores the role African rivers played in the continent’s economic, social, and political development and provides the first historical study of the key themes in African river history. This book synthesises the available research on African rivers with new evidence to offer students of African and environmental history a narrative of how people have used and engaged the continent’s water resources. It analyses key themes in Africa’s modern history − European exploration, establishment of colonial rule, economic development, ‘green’ politics − and each case study provides a lens with which to view social, economic and ecological change in Africa.

Geographers Volume 31 Biobibliographical Studies Edited by Hayden Lorimer and Charles W. J. Withers Volume thirty-one of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies brings together nine essays on leading geographers and their work. With its publication, the cumulative record of geographers’ lives and works in the series exceeds 460 essays. Here, the editors bring forward critical appraisals of six French geographers, and so illustrate the rich traditions of geographical scholarship in that country; of a leading Portuguese figure; a Briton who played a major role in establishing geography in modern New Zealand; and a British woman who pioneered connections between the history of geography in practice and the histories of science and technology. Geographers’ lives and geography’s making is wonderfully illuminated in international, national and cross-disciplinary context. Boy Soldiers of the Great War Richard van Emden

2nd

edition

“Should this have been allowed to happen? Richard van Emden’s fascinating and distressing account ... shows how difficult it is to provide a simple answer.” Sunday Times Boy Soldiers of the Great War tells for the first time the incredible stories of the boys who went to fight for their country. Richard van Emden, having amassed a unique collection of personal testimonies and hitherto unpublished diaries and letters, brings to life their stories of heroism and sacrifice. This edition has been completely revised and updated. RICHARD VAN EMDEN has interviewed over 270 veterans of the Great War and has written twelve books on the subject including The Trench and The Last Fighting Tommy (both top ten bestsellers).

How the Camouflage Unit and Operation Bertram Hoodwinked Rommel Rick Stroud In 1940 a group of artists, sculptors, film makers, theatre designers and set painters came together to form the Camouflage Unit. Led by Major Geoffrey Barkas and including among their number the internationally renowned stage magician Jasper Maskelyne, the unit’s projects became a crucial battlefield weapon. At the siege of Tobruk the unit made a vital desalination plant appear to have been destroyed by enemy bombers; from then on they used their storytelling skills to weave intricate webs of deception, making things appear that weren’t actually there, and things that were, disappear, to deceive the enemy. Their stage was the enormous, flat and almost featureless Western Desert.

From the Great War to the Fall of France, 1918-40 Jeremy Black Here is an original and up-to-date account of a key period of military history, one that not only links the two World Wars but also anticipates the more complex nature of conflict following the Cold War. Black links the two World Wars, between the overcoming of trench warfare in the campaigns of 1918 and the fall of France in 1940. This was a period when militaries, governments and publics digested the lessons of the Great War and prepared for another major struggle. Black also locates the period in terms of longterm questions in military history, including the relationship between symmetrical and asymmetrical warfare, the tensions surrounding innovation, the pressures and possibilities created by technological change and the impact of ideology on the causes and conduct of war. Black’s book devotes particular attention to the Far East as part of his worldwide coverage. He also assesses the role of the military in internal politics and establishes the importance of civil wars. SOE and The Resistance

bestseller

As told in The Times Obituaries Edited by Michael Tillotson “Tillotson’s SOE and The Resistance comprises The Times’ obituaries of the men and women who served with Churchill’s Special Operations Executive. It’s a moving and colourful celebration of the lives − and bravery − of the people who went undercover across Europe and the Far East.” The Times SOE and The Resistance describes the extraordinary contribution to the allied war effort made by the Special Operations Executive, from its formation in 1940 to the end of the war. Within a broadly chronological framework, the book illustrates how resistance was stimulated among the subjugated populations of Europe and the Far East, leading to the sabotage of industry and communications critical to the Axis cause. MICHAEL TILLOTSON served in Europe, Malaya, Indo-China, South Arabia and with the UN in Cyprus before retiring as a major-general. Liberal Democracies at War

The First World War

Conflict and Representation Edited by Hilary Footitt and Andrew Knapp

Germany and Austria-Hungary 1914-1918 Holger Herwig

Liberal democracies have always accepted the need to go to war, despite the fact that war can undermine liberal values. Wars may be won or lost, not only on the battlefield, but in the perceptions of the publics who pay for them. Presentation is therefore increasingly important. Starting with the First World War, the first major war fought by liberal democracies after the emergence on mass media, Liberal Democracies at War explores the relationship between representations of liberal violence and the ways in which the liberal state understands ‘rights’ in war. Annals and Stories, 1914-1919 Chris Ward Living on the Western Front provides a highly original history of the settler experience in Befland ([B]ritish [E]xpeditionary [F]orce land) during the First World War. Using an unusual, representational form that involves the stitching together of over a hundred extracts from primary sources, which can then in turn be read either chronologically or thematically, Chris Ward brilliantly depicts a true sense of settlers’ lives in Great War Belgium, Northern France and Germany. Simultaneously an annal and an anthology of stories, this book tells us a great deal about landscapes, sounds, smells, food, wounds, memory and morale in the way that the Befland settlers actually lived and experienced them. Beyond this, the book also challenges popular conceptions of what history writing can or should be. It drags us away from the reassuringly commanding authorial voice of the conventional historical narrative towards an approach that brings a degree of uncertainty and that encourages us to experiment with history and its relationship with the past in an exciting and rewarding way.

Clash of Empires in World War II Douglas Ford Drawing on documents in US and British archives, Douglas Ford explores why the belligerents in the Pacific war fought the way that they did. The book focuses not only on the battlefield level, but also provides a perspective from the military high command, government, and non-combatant citizens. How did Japan emerge as a Great Power following the breakdown of the Washington Treaty system of 1921-22? What factors propelled Japan’s aggressive expansion on the Asian continent during the 1930s? After Pearl Harbor, Japan rapidly conquered Southeast Asia and the western Pacific but the tide of the war shifted in the Allies’ favour at Midway and Guadalcanal. The book concludes with the reasons why the Pacific War ended with Japan’s unconditional surrender, and the consequences of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. British Army Communications in the Second World War Lifting the Fog of Battle Simon Godfrey Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence form the backbone of the Army’s operating system. But while much attention has been given in the literature to the other three elements, communications in the British Army during World War II have been widely ignored. This book rectifies the omission. It shows that failures in front line communications contributed to several of the set backs suffered by the Army, but also that ultimate victory was only achieved after a successful communications system was in place. It explains how the outcome of the main campaigns in Europe and North Africa depended on communications, how the system operated and how it evolved from a relatively primitive and inadequately supplied state at Dunkirk to a generally effective system at the time of the Rhine crossings. Problems still occurred however, for example at infantry platoon level and famously with paratrooper communications at Arnhem, often simply due to the shortcomings of existing technology. The book concludes that it is only very recently that advances in technology have allowed those problems to be solved. SIMON GODFREY worked for most of his career in marketing. After selling his market research agency and retiring from full time work in 2001, he studied military history at University College London, obtaining an MA in 2003 and a PhD in 2009. The Evolution and Impact of Royal Air Force Doctrine 1919-1939 Neville Parton The part that RAF doctrine played in preparing the Air Force for war has been the subject of considerable criticism, based largely on the RAF’s early performance. Little detailed analysis of the actual content of the RAF doctrine has been attempted. This book examines the evolution of this doctrine at the strategic and operational levels over the period 1919-1939, beginning with its RFC and RNAS antecedents from the First World War. Use of consistent methodology allows an effective comparison of three major doctrine publications produced by the Service during the period − The RAF Operations Manual, The War Manual of the RAF and the second edition of the same. NEVILLE PARTON has had and continues to enjoy a distinguished career with the RAF. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK, where he is a member of Selwyn College. Changing War The British Army, the Hundred Days Campaign and the Birth of the Royal Air Force, 1918 Edited by Peter Gray and Gary Sheffield In 1918, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) played a critical role in defeating the German army and thus winning the First World War. This ‘Hundred Days’ campaign (August to November 1918) was the greatest series of land victories in British military history. 1918 also saw the creation of the Royal Air Force, the world’s first independent air service, from the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. Until now however, histories of the First World War have tended to concentrate on the earlier battles of 1916 and 1917 and have often underplayed this vitally important period. Changing War fills this significant gap in our knowledge by providing in-depth examinations of key aspects of the operations of the British Army, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy in the climactic year of the First World War. Written by a group of leading experts, it sheds light not only on 1918, but on the emergence of modern warfare that is seen by many as having taken place at that time. Cavalry, Guns and Military Transition in Early Modern Asia A Comparative Study of China, India, Persia and West Asia Kaushik Roy A substantial amount of work has been carried out to explore the military systems of Western Europe during the early modern era, but the military trajectories of the Asian states have received relatively little attention. This book provides the first comparative study of the major Asian empires’ military systems and explores the extent of the impact of West European military transition on the extra-European world. Kaushik Roy conducts a comparative analysis of the armies and navies of the large agrarian bureaucratic empires of Asia, focusing on the question of how far the Asian polities were able to integrate gunpowder weapons in their military systems. The 1711 Expedition to Quebec Politics and the Limitations of British Global Strategy Adam Lyons In 1711, the newly formed Great Britain launched its first attempt to conquer French North America. The largest military force ever assembled to fight on the continent was dispatched and combined with a colonial American force in Boston − but it never reached Quebec. The expedition was a product of the turbulent political environment at the end of Queen Anne’s reign and it neatly symbolises the shift in politics and strategy. The expedition helped to alter British policy by renewing an interest in ‘blue water’, or maritime, operations that would gain dominance for Britain in commerce and at sea. This strategy would later see huge success, ultimately resulting in the fall of Quebec to Wolfe and the eventual conquest of French North America in the Seven Years War. Reassessing the British Way in Warfare Strategy and Tactics During the Reigns of William and Anne K. A. J. McLay In the 1930s and 1940s, the military historian and strategic analyst Basil Liddell Hart developed a thesis which claimed that Britain possessed a historic tradition in warfare, or as he wrote, a ‘Way in Warfare’. The Role of the Royal Navy in South America, 1920-1970 Showing the Flag Jon Wise This book demonstrates the importance of the presence of the Royal Navy in South America. Historically there have been no treaty obligations and few strategic considerations in the region, yet it is frequently referred to as forming part of Britain’s ‘unofficial empire’. The role of the Navy in supporting foreign relations and promoting commerce is examined during a period of the twentieth century which is often associated with the decline of the British Empire. The D-Day Landing on Gold Beach

Recent books in the series: Fratricide in Battle: (Un)Friendly Fire Edited by

6 June 1944

Charles Kirke

Andrew Holborn The Normandy landings of 6 June 1944, across five sectors of the French coast − Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword − constituted the largest amphibious invasion in history. This study analyses in depth the preparations and implementation of the D-Day landing on Gold Beach by XXX Corps. Historians have tended to dismiss the landing on Gold Beach as straightforward but the evidence points to a different reality. Armour supported the infantry landing and prior bombing was intended to weaken German defences; however, the bulk of the bombing landed too far inland, and many craft foundered in difficult conditions at sea. It was the tenacity of the assault units and the flexibility of the follow up units which enabled the Gold landing to secure the right flank of the British Army in Normandy. Using detailed primary evidence from The National Archives and the Imperial War Museum, this volume provides a substantial assessment of the background to the landing on Gold, and analyses the events of D-Day in the wider context of the Normandy Campaign. Here Be Dragons

Illuminati

Mythical Beasts in Ancient Legend and Modern Myth Juliette Wood

The Stigma Order

‛Here be dragons’ was the traditional warning used by ancient mapmakers to indicate dangerous, or simply unknown, lands. These were the dwelling places of fantastical beasts, creatures such as dragons, sea serpents, unicorns, griffins and mermaids. Throughout the ages, such beasts have been viewed in complex and contradictory ways because they embody both our fear and our fascination of the unpredictable natural world around us. They appear in the earliest myths and accompany the heroes of medieval romance and folktales. Whether as the symbolic creatures of myth, or as the marvellous beasts of medieval legend and travellers’ tales, fantastic animals have always inspired art and literature. Today they feature among the many marvels that populate the alternative worlds of fantasy and the outer reaches of cyberspace. Drawing on sources as diverse as myth, history and folklore, this book explores the ways in which mythical beasts continue to inhabit our fantasies and to define our constantly changing relationship with both real and imagined worlds. JULIETTE WOOD is the author of numerous books, including Legends of Chivalry: Medieval Myth and The Eternal Chalice: The Enduring Myth of the Holy Grail. Peggy Pawlowski The notorious Bavarian Illuminati were originally a group of keen social innovators. Their plans for a better world were only later interpreted as part of the global conspiracy we are all familiar with. Peggy Pawlowski unravels the myths that have developed over more than two centuries, offering the first serious history of the Order. Based on original research into Illuminati documents, this account challenges the misconceptions that have surrounded this secret society since its discovery. Illuminati presents the Order as a brainchild of the Enlightenment. Based on the order’s educational mission, it uncovers how a failed social experiment was dragged centre-stage during a time of political unrest that shook the Old and New Worlds alike. Medicine, Sport and the Body Two Planks and a Passion

bestseller

The Dramatic History of Skiing Roland Huntford “Our choice − pick of the paperbacks ... Huntford tells the ski story straightforwardly and simply.” Sunday Times “This will be skiing’s definitive history for years to come.” Times Literary Supplement “[A] fine, erudite history of the sport.” The Independent

A Historical Perspective Neil Carter What role does sports medicine play in today’s society? Is it solely about treating sports injuries? Should it only be concerned with elite sport? This book provides a history of the relationship between sport, medicine and health from the midnineteenth century to today. It combines the subdisciplines of the history of medicine and the history of sport to give a balanced analysis of the role of medicine in sport and how this has evolved over the past two centuries.

ROLAND HUNTFORD is the world's foremost authority on the polar expeditions and their protagonists. He was the Scandinavian correspondent on The Observer for many years.

In an age where sports medicine plays an increasingly prominent role in both elite and recreational sport, this book provides a timely and clear analysis of its rise and purpose.

A Cultural History of Jewish Dress Eric Silverman

new in PB

The English breakfast is one of the best-loved national meals in the world, an edible symbol of England and Englishness. But how did breakfast attain this distinction, what can a national meal tell us about the nation that eats it, what are the links between social and culinary change, and is there more to the english breakfast than bacon and eggs? This biography of the English breakfast shows how the renowned meal came into being over many centuries, reaching its height in the Victorian and Edwardian eras when splendid breakfasts were served from silver dishes in grand country houses across the land. Following this historical analysis are three authentic and complete cookbooks devoted entirely to breakfasts from the heyday of this best of all meals, with some 500 recipes by three celebrated culinary figures of the Victorian age − an elite hostess, a thrifty housekeeper, and a pukka colonial colonel − before the narrative continues up to the present. The Life of R.H. Tawney

A Cultural History of Gardens

Socialism and History Lawrence Goldman

6 Volume Set

R. H. Tawney was the most influential theorist and exponent of socialism in Britain in the twentieth century. Based on papers deposited at the London School of Economics and a collection of personal material held by his family, this book provides the first detailed biography. Lawrence Goldman shows that to understand Tawney’s work it is necessary to understand his life. This biography takes a broadly chronological approach, and uses this framework to examine major themes, including Tawney’s political thought and historical writings. Tawney was the most representative of Labour’s intellectuals as well as the most influential, and the contradictions he embodied are evident in the general history of British socialism. The South Pacific Narratives of Robert Louis Stevenson and Jack London Race, Class, Imperialism Lawrence Phillips From 1888 to 1915 Robert Louis Stevenson and Jack London were uniquely placed to witness and record the imperial struggle for the South Pacific. Engaging the major European colonial empires and the USA, the struggle questioned ideas of liberty, racial identity and class like few other arenas of the time. Exploring a unique moment in South Pacific and Western history through the work of Stevenson and London, this study assesses the impact of their national identities on works like The Amateur Emigrant and Adventure; discusses their attitudes towards colonialism, race and class; shows how they negotiated different cultures and peoples in their writing and considers where both writers are placed in the Western tradition of writing about the Pacific. By contextualising Stevenson’s and London’s South Pacific work, this study reveals two critical voices of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century colonialism that deserve to stand beside their contemporary Joseph Conrad in shaping contemporary attitudes towards imperialism, race, and class.
