While England Slept Political Writings: 1936-1939

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

Sir Winston S. Churchill

The Complete Set

Now available in the Bloomsbury Revelations series to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two, While England Slept is a powerful collection of Churchill’s newspaper writings in the years before the outbreak of war. Including his writings on the inadequacy of Britain’s navy, the dramas of the Spanish Civil War, the influence of the Soviet Union and the alliance between Hitler and Mussolini, the book is a powerful demonstration of Churchill’s political foresight and the power of his writing. Sir Winston S. Churchill (1874-1965) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on two occasions, from 1940-1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He was also the author of more than 40 books, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953 and in 1963 was made an honorary citizen of the United States. "This history will endure; not only because Sir Winston has written it, but also because of its own inherent virtues — its narrative power, its fine judgment of war and politics, of soldiers and statesmen, and even more because it reflects a tradition of what Englishmen in the hey-day of their empire thought and felt about their country's past." The Daily Telegraph Spanning four volumes and many centuries of history, from Caesar’s invasion of Britain to the start of World War I, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples stands as one of Winston Churchill’s most magnificent literary works. Begun during Churchill’s ‘wilderness years’ when he was out of government, first published in 1956 after his leadership through the darkest days of World War II had cemented his place in history and completed when Churchill was in his 80s, it remains to this day a compelling and vivid history. The World Crisis

The World Crisis Volume I

Sir Winston S. Churchill

1911-1914

The World Crisis is considered by many to be Winston S. Churchill’s literary masterpiece. Published across five volumes between 1923 and 1931, Churchill here tells the story of The Great War, from its origins to the long shadow it cast on the following decades. At once a history and a firsthand account of Churchill’s own involvement in the war, The World Crisis remains a compelling account of the conflict and its importance. Sir Winston S. Churchill (1874-1965) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on two occasions, from 1940-1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. The author of more than 40 books, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953 and in 1963 was made an honorary citizen of the United States.

Sir Winston S. Churchill Volume I covers the origins and earliest days of the war from 1911-1914, as well as the longer history of the collapse of the Great Power system from the Franco Prussian war onwards. Churchill here explores the international tensions over the Balkan states that triggered the conflict as well as the arms race between the British and German navies. Sir Winston S. Churchill

Sir Winston S. Churchill

The second volume of Churchill’s history covers 1915 – the first full year of a conflict that most of the antagonists had expected to be over in a matter of months. Churchill here covers the intractable deadlock on the western front, the use of tanks and gas on the battlefields and the unsuccessful attempts by both sides to break through. In addition, Churchill also considers his own involvement in the Dardanelles campaign (Gallipoli). The third volume of The World Crisis covers the climax and the end of the war, from 1916-1918. Churchill here explores some of the most important moments of the conflict, including the battles of Verdun, Jutland, Passchendaele and the Somme as well as the American entry into the war that marked the beginning of its end. Churchill here also recounts his time on the front line during his brief exile from political office and his return to government in Lloyd-George’s wartime coalition as Minster of Munitions. 1918-1928: The Aftermath

The Unknown War

Sir Winston S. Churchill

Sir Winston S. Churchill

In the fourth volume of his history of World War I, Churchill covers the aftermath of the conflict, between the years 1918-1922. Churchill here considers the process of demobilization after the many hard years of war, and the long negotiation of the peace and the Treaty of Versailles, as well as President Woodrow Wilson’s famed 14 Points, the founding of the League of Nations and the Revolution and Civil War in Russia.

In the fifth and final volume of The World Crisis, Winston Churchill turns his attention to the ‘forgotten war’ on the Eastern Front. His focus is the great rivalry between Russia and the AustroGerman alliance during the years of the First World War, from the tensions over Bosnia and Serbia that triggered the conflict through the terrible battles on the Eastern Front to the final collapse of the Russian forces that triggered the Revolution.

Writing the History of Crime

Edited by Anne Gerritsen & Giorgio Riello

Paul Knepper

Writing Material Culture History examines the methodologies currently used in the historical study of material culture. Touching on archaeology, art history, literary studies and anthropology, the book provides history students with a fundamental understanding of the relationship between artefacts and historical narratives. A range of artefacts, including a 16th-century Peruvian crown and a 19th-century Alaskan Sea Lion overcoat, are considered, illustrating the myriad ways in which objects and history relate to one another. Bringing together scholars working in a variety of disciplines, this book provides a critical introduction for students interested in material culture, history and historical methodologies. Anne Gerritsen is Reader in Chinese History at the University of Warwick, UK. Giorgio Riello is Professor of Global History and Culture at the University of Warwick, UK. Writing the History of Crime investigates the development of historical writing on the subject of crime and its wider place in modern social historiography. It examines long-standing and emerging traditions in history writing, with separate chapters on legal and scientific approaches, as well as on social, cultural, gender and empire history. Each chapter then explores these historical approaches in relation to crime, paying particular attention to the relationship between theory and the interpretation of evidence. Rather than a timeline for the historical development of ideas about crime or a catalogue of the range of topics that comprise the subject matter, Writing the History of Crime reveals the ideas behind crime as a subject of historical investigation; it looks at how these ideas generate questions that may be asked about the past and the way in which these questions are answered. This is a crucial text for anyone interested in the history of crime, the historiography of social history or the art of history writing more broadly. Paul Knepper is Professor of Criminology at the University of Sheffield, UK. Public History A Practical Guide Faye Sayer Public History: A Practical Guide explores history in the public sphere and examines the variety of skills that historians require in the practice of public history. It discusses how through various mediums of interpretation and presentation a range of actors, which include museums, archives, government agencies, community history societies and media, make history accessible to the wider audience. It provides the reader with an overview of the wider world application and communication of history beyond the classroom through core case studies for each sector that include ideas for best practice 'in the field'. This book offers a synopsis of a topic that has not previously been covered, in an accessible and engaging format. By focusing on an area of study that has changed substantially in the last decade, Public History: A Practical Guide presents a comprehensive overview of the practice of 'public history', and provides ideas for future methodological approaches and a reference point for planning professional development in order to gain future employment in these sectors. This book will help students to understand the broader applications of history beyond the university. Christopher Tyerman, Fellow and Tutor in History, Hertford College, University of Oxford, UK "This book is an original, perceptive, and convincing analysis of the cultural attitudes which shaped the Byzantine reaction to the crusades and ultimately led to the disaster of the crusader sack of Constantinople in 1204." Poverty, Heresy, and the Apocalypse The Order of Apostles and Social Change in Medieval Italy 1260-1307 Jerry B. Pierce This is the first study to examine the rise and fall of a medieval religious group, the Order of Apostles, that began with orthodox support but ended in the fires of heresy. Originating in 1260 in Parma the group was founded by Gerard Segarelli who believed that a life of apostolic poverty was the true path of Christian devotion.

The Prehistory of the Crusades Missionary War and the Baltic Crusades

Imagining History in Medieval Britain

Burnam W. Reynolds

Stephen Kelly

The Prehistory of the Crusades explores how the Crusades came to be seen as the use of aggressive warfare to Christianise pagan lands and peoples. Reynolds focuses on the Baltic, or Northern, Crusades, an aspect of the Crusades that has been little documented, thus bringing a new perspective to their historical and ideological origins. Baltic Crusades were distinctive because they were not directed at the Holy Land, and they were not against Muslim opponents, but rather against pagan peoples. From the Emperor Charlemagne's wars against the Saxons in the 8th and 9th centuries to the Baltic Crusades of the 12th century, this book explores the sanctification of war in creating the ideal of crusade. In so doing, it shows how crusading ultimately developed in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Prehistory of the Crusades provides a valuable insight into the topic for students of medieval history and the Crusades. Burnam W. Reynolds is Professor of History at Asbury University, USA. Imagining History in Medieval Britain explores the historical imagination through medieval and early modern writers and texts, from Christian historians such as Bede to secular chronicles; from Geoffrey of Monmouth and other romancers of history, to late medieval historical fiction by Chaucer and Malory. The book deliberately moves away from a chronological approach to assess the writing of history thematically. Chapters are designed to be comprehensive in mapping the major texts of medieval historical writing but are also intended to challenge current understandings by juxtaposing texts with themes which are informed by the postmodern sense of crisis in historical representation. The book frames its exploration of medieval history writing with reference to key thinkers of contemporary historiographical theory including Foucault, de Certeau, Collingwood and Hayden White. The book introduces students to the main currents of medieval history writing but also challenges the strictures imposed by the discipline of History as it has emerged since the eighteenth century. Inventing Eleanor The Medieval and Post-Medieval Image of Eleanor of Aquitaine Michael R. Evans Eleanor of Aquitaine (1124-1204), queen of France and England and mother of two kings, has often been described as one of the most remarkable women of the Middle Ages. Yet her real achievements have been embellished – and even obscured – by myths that have grown up over eight centuries. She has been variously viewed as an adulterous queen, a monstrous mother and a jealous murderess, but also as a patron of literature, champion of courtly love and proto-feminist defender of women's rights. Inventing Eleanor interrogates the myths that have grown up around the figure of Eleanor of Aquitaine and investigates how and why historians and artists have invented an Eleanor who is very different from the 12th-century queen. The book first considers the medieval primary sources and then proceeds to trace the post-medieval development of the image of Eleanor, from demonic queen to feminist icon, in historiography and the broader culture. Food and Identity in England, 1540-1640 Eating to Impress Paul S. Lloyd Food and Identity in England, 1540-1640 considers early modern food consumption in an important new way, connecting English consumption practices between the reigns of Henry VIII and Charles I with ideas of 'self' and 'otherness' in wider contexts of society and the class system. Examining the diets of various social groups, ranging from manual labourers to the aristocracy, special foods and their preparation, as well as festive events and gift foods, this all-encompassing study reveals the extent to which individuals and communities identified themselves and others by what and how they ate between the Reformation of the church and the English Civil Wars. This text provides remarkable insights for anyone interested in knowing more about the society and culture of early modern England. Paul S. Lloyd is Lecturer at the University of Leicester, UK. Literature and Culture in Late Byzantine Thessalonica

Superstition and Magic in Early Modern Europe: A Reader

Eugenia Russell

Edited by Helen Parish

This volume sets out the political and commercial landscape of Thessalonica between 1303 and 1430, when the city fell to the Ottoman Turks, before focusing on the literary and hymnographical aspects of the city's cultural history and its legacy. The cosmopolitan nature of urban life in Thessalonica, the polyphony of opinions it experienced and expressed, its multiple links with centres such as Constantinople, Adrianople, Athos, Lemnos and Lesvos, and the diversity and strength of its authorial voices make the study of the city's cultural life a vital part of our understanding of the Byzantine Eastern Mediterranean. Each essay in this book makes a significant contribution to the history of magic and religion in its own right, while together they demonstrate how debates over the topic have evolved over time, providing invaluable intellectual, historical, and socio-political context for readers approaching the subject for the first time. The essays are organised around five key themes and areas of controversy: superstition; the tension between miracles and magic; ghosts and apparitions; witchcraft and witch trails; and the gradual disintegration of the ‘magical universe’ in the face of scientific, religious, and practical opposition. Each section is prefaced by an introduction that provides an outline of the historiography and engages with recent scholarship and debate, setting the context for the essays that follow and providing a foundation for further study. This collection is an invaluable toolkit for students of early modern Europe. Helen Parish is Professor of History at the University of Reading, UK. Histories of the Irish Future

Revolutionary Ireland, 1912-25

Bryan Fanning

Robert Lynch

"Bryan Fanning’s elegantly readable, informative, erudite and wonderfully engaging book presents the evolution of Ireland through the eyes of a number of its theorists ... Fanning’s approach is entirely original, analysing different visions for Ireland’s future; his prose is clear and fluent. The book presents a lucid and compelling narrative and its choice of figures presents new perspectives on Ireland as it was theorised; a tour de force." Dermot Moran, University College Dublin, Ireland Histories of the Irish Future is an intellectual history of Ireland and a history of Irish crises viewed through the eyes of twelve key writers: William Petty, William Molyneux, Edmund Burke, Thomas Malthus, Richard Whately, Friedrich Engels, John Mitchel, James Connolly, Hanna Sheehy Skeffington, Jeremiah Newman, Conor Cruise O’Brien and Fintan O’Toole. Their analyses of the shifting conditions of Ireland and their efforts to address Ireland’s predicaments are located within the wider social, political, economic and cultural anxieties of their times. The result is a pioneering interdisciplinary contribution to modern Irish history and Irish Studies that will appeal to students of politics, economic history, and philosophy. Discourses Surrounding British Widows of the First World War Angela Smith Using extensive data - mostly gleaned from the National Archives - this book examines the way in which British widows of servicemen who died in the First World War were represented in society and by themselves, exploring the intertwining discourses of social welfare, national identity, and morality that can be identified in these texts. Focusing on two widows, the book encourages their individual stories to emerge and gives a voice to an otherwise forgotten group of women whose stories have been lost under the literary tomes of middle-class writers such as Vera Brittain and May Wedderburn Cannon. The discussion is further informed by a wider reading of 300 other such files, which allows wider observations to be made about the nature of the discourses examined, and offers the most complete possible picture for such data. Offering a streamlined adaptation of the Discourse-Historical Approach to critical discourse analysis, Discourses Surrounding British Widows of the First World War demonstrates how this model of analysis can be used to investigate a large body of data from a wide variety of sources, covering a long period of time. As such it will be useful to all scholars in their analysis of historical corpa. Angela Smith is Reader in Language and Culture at the University of Sunderland, UK. "Revolutionary Ireland, 1912-25 provides an excellent introduction to this vital period in Irish history… Including sample exam questions, reading lists, web links and a selection of important documents from the period this book explores the political history of the ‘revolutionary period’ and clarifies the sequence of events leading to the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, the creation of two new partition states, and the Civil War. The political complexities of the period are laid bare and their consequences made clear. This book reveals how both the Northern Irish State and the Irish Free State, created in violence, were defined and shaped by their experiences during the revolutionary period." Maria Luddy, Professor of History, University of Warwick, UK Revolutionary Ireland, 1912-25 analyses the main events in Ireland from the initial crisis over the Third Home Rule Bill in 1912 to the consolidation of partition Ulster with the settling of the boundary issue in 1925. It includes a range of additional features, including a chronology of significant events, maps, a glossary of key terms and an extensive bibliography, and provides a comprehensive narrative history that allows students to get to grips with this turbulent and fascinating period in Ireland’s past. Anglo-American Crossroads Urban Planning and Research in Britain, 1940-2010 Mark Clapson The postwar British city was been shaped by many international forces during the last century, but American influences on British urban research and urban planning have been particularly significant. Beginning with debates about reconstruction during the Second World War, Anglo-American Crossroads explores how Americanisation influenced key approaches to town planning, from reconstruction after 1945 to the New Urbanism of the 1990s. Clapson pays particular attention to the relationship between urban sociological research and planning issues since the 1950s. He also addresses the ways in which American developers and planners of new communities looked to the British new towns and garden city movement for inspiration. Using a wide range of sources, from American Foundation Archives to town planning materials and urban sociologies, Anglo-American Crossroads shows that although some things went wrong in translation from the USA to Britain, there were also some important successes within a transatlantic dialogue that was more nuanced than a one-dimensional process of American hegemony. A British Fascist in the Second World War

Daniel Tilles

The Italian War Diary of James Strachey Barnes, 1943-45

"Dr Tilles has taken our breath away with a thoroughly researched investigation that challenges much received wisdom concerning this most sensitive subject. Using new material as well as reinterpreting well-thumbed existing accounts, he offers us a provocative but at the same time compelling re-telling of the narrative." Geoffrey Alderman, Michael Gross Professor of Politics & Contemporary History, University of Buckingham, UK "Daniel Tilles has produced the most detailed and nuanced account of the British Union of Fascists’ antisemitism and Jewish responses to it. Utilising new sources and re-assessing old ones, he provides a thought-provoking analysis of the nature of BUF antisemitism, including that of its leader, Oswald Mosley. Tilles also shows the complex and, he argues, successful Jewish actions against the vile attacks of Britain’s largest fascist movement during the 1930s." Professor Tony Kushner, Director of the Parkes Institute, University of Southampton, UK An exploration of the use of antisemitism by Britain’s interwar fascists and the ways in which the country’s Jews reacted to this. It analyses these issues in far greater breadth and depth than any previous study and examines the two alongside one another for the first time. Daniel Tilles is Assistant Professor of History at the Pedagogical University of Cracow, Poland.

Edited by Claudia Baldoli & Brendan Fleming A British Fascist in the Second World War presents the edited diary of the British fascist Italophile, James Strachey Barnes. Previously unpublished, the diary is a significant source for all students of the Second World War and the history of European and British fascism. The diary covers the period from the fall of Mussolini in 1943 to the end of the war in 1945, two years in which British fascist Major James Strachey Barnes lived in Italy as a 'traitor'. With a scholarly introduction and an extensive bibliography and sources section included, this edited diary is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in learning more about the ideological complexities of the Second World War and fascism in 20thcentury Europe.

Neo-Tories The Revolt of British Conservatives against Democracy and Political Modernity (1929-1939) Bernhard Dietz The danger to British democracy in the interwar period came from a different source to that which has thus far been assumed; from a network of radical Conservatives who challenged the political system and sought to replace it with an authoritarian corporate state. In this book this network is systematically analysed for the first time and its members are given a name: Neo-Tories. With strong links to the European right, yet a minority back home, this group of British Conservatives are all the more fascinating today because it is on their ultimate failure that the success of British democracy rested. Capital and Labour in Victorian England Manufacturing Consensus Donna Loftus Despite extensive scholarship on the social and cultural history of industrial England there is little work that explores how new forms of capitalist production were understood and normalised. Capital and Labour in Victorian England explores how accounts of industrial society evolved in the 19th century and how they inspired reform movements designed to accommodate the conflicts and contradictions that were a feature of industrial capitalism. It traces the rise of capitalist utopianism in the mid-century, and how such visions fell apart in the face of industrial unrest, organised labour, and more aggressive forms of capitalism. By the end of the century capital and labour were seen as inevitably separate, distinct and opposed - a development that sharpened class politics and shaped the way the first accounts of industrialisation were written. Rehabilitation and Probation in England and Wales, 1876-1962 Raymond Gard Rehabilitation and Probation in England and Wales, 1876-1962 draws on a wide range of archive material to describe the arrival of a modern probation service. Focusing on the first half of the twentieth century, it describes the debates, conflicts and compromises that resulted in the creation of a state sponsored, centrally controlled, professional, secular, social work and psychological based agency. Following a chronological structure, Ray Gard explores the arrival of the so-called period of 'penal optimism', showing how rehabilitation arrived in the courts of England and Wales. The book uses archive and original material to give voice to those devising and implementing policy, revealing an uneven path to a modern probation system. The Policing of Belfast 1870-1914 Mark Radford The Policing of Belfast, 1870-1914 examines the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) in late Victorian Belfast in order to see how a semi-military, largely rural constabulary adapted to the problems that a city posed. Mark Radford explores whether the RIC, as the most public face of British government, was successful in controlling a recalcitrant Irish urban populace. This examination of the contrast in styles between urban and rural policing and semi-rural and civil constabulary offers an important insight into the social, political and military history of Ireland at the turn of the twentieth century. The book concludes by showing how governmental neglect of the force and its failure to comprehensively address the issues of pay and conditions of service ultimately led to crisis in the RIC. Mark Radford is a Tutor in the Department of Continuing Education at Oxford University, UK. He is a former member of the Regular British Army and Royal Ulster Constabulary, and has been granted the appointment of Honorary Colonel in the British Army Reserves and Cadets in recognition of his long-standing involvement. Policing the Factory Theft, Private Policing and the Law in Modern England Barry Godfrey & David J. Cox “Grounded in extensive archival research, Policing the Factory is the most detailed and nuanced study of workplace theft in the nineteenth century undertaken to date.” Dean Wilson, Law, Crime and History, Plymouth University, UK Policing the Factory describes the operation of the Bank of England police, the Post Office police, and various other private policing agencies, employed to track down and prosecute workplace offenders. The authors focus in particular on the Worsted Committee and their Inspectors, who, between 1777 and 1968, prosecuted thousands of workers in the north of England for taking home workplace scraps, or wasting their employers' time. This book explores how, and under what legislative basis, the criminal law could be brought into private spaces in this period and goes on suggest that the activities of the Inspectorate inhibited the development of public policing in Yorkshire. The book presents case studies, newspaper comment, memoirs, and statistics based on detailed archival analysis of court records, to create a richly textured story which will inform and challenge contemporary debates on policing and police history. Barry Godfrey is Professor of Social Justice at the University of Liverpool, UK. David J. Cox is Research Fellow at Keele University, UK.

Poverty, Sickness and Death in England, 1750-1850 Steven King Poverty, Sickness and Death in England, 1750-1850 provides an in-depth look at medical provision in England under the Old Poor Law, a subject on which little has been written to date. Based on the results of the first large-scale comparative regional analysis of the scale, form and duration of medical relief, this study provides a valuable insight into the issue of pauper access to medical care and sickness relief. Steven King draws on a wide range of sources for this study, including vestry minutes, overseers' accounts, doctor's treatment books, diaries, newspaper reporting, coroner's reports, court depositions, hospital and workhouse records and the correspondence of poor law unions. The largest ever sample of pauper letters are analysed to explore issues such as pauper agency, the nature of relief negotiation processes and the feeling and strategies of paupers. Friso Wielenga's A History of the Netherlands: From the Sixteenth Century to the Present Day fills this gap. It offers a modern, integrated outline of Dutch history from the period in which the country took shape as a geographical, administrative and political entity and undermines the presumption that Dutch history since the 16th century was characterised by political consensus and religious toleration. Domestic and foreign politics take pride of place, interwoven with the broad lines of economic and cultural history, as Wielenga uses the Netherlands' geographical location and foreign policy to better understand a tumultuous period of domestic politics.

Europe and the Struggle for Leadership Britain and France, 1945-1975 Anthony Adamthwaite Europe and the Struggle for Leadership offers a comparative history of sharply contrasting national experiences in the aftermath of the Second World War. Perceived as a failing power, post-war France seized the initiative in European construction, gaining ascendancy in Western Europe; Britain became the sick man. How and why did the French outsmart their arch-rivals? Drawing on American, British and French official records, together with private papers and interviews, Anthony Adamthwaite explores the reasons for French success. The study highlights the importance of contingency and individual actors. Britain’s altercation with the Community’s French doorkeeper, argues the author, ignored the elephant in the room- the need for a revived entente in the Cold War era. An Anglo-French couple powering European unity could have repositioned Western Europe as partner, not client of the United States.

Transnational Fascism in the Twentieth Century

Victims and Survivors of Nazi Human Experiments

Spain, Italy and the Global Right-Wing Extremist Network

Science and Suffering in the Holocaust

Matteo Albanese & Pablo del Hierro Developing a knowledge of the Spanish-Italian connection between right-wing extremist groups is crucial to any detailed understanding of the history of fascism. Transnational Fascism in the Twentieth Century allows us to consider the global fascist network that built up over the course of the 20th century by exploring one of the significant links that existed within that network. It distinguishes and analyses the relationship between the fascists of Spain and Italy at three interrelated levels - that of the individual, political organisations and the state - whilst examining the world relations and contacts of both fascist factions, from Buenos Aires to Washington and Berlin to Montevideo, in what is a genuinely transnational history of the fascist movement. Incorporating research carried out in archives around the world, this book delivers key insights to further the historical study of right-wing political violence in modern Europe. Paul Weindling "In this important book, Paul Weindling combines detailed original research and great sensitivity to produce a compelling study of an oftenmisunderstood subject. With clarity and nuance, he details the brutality of the Nazis' experiments but never forgets the humanity of the victims. The result is a genuine contribution to the scholarship on the Third Reich and its terrible crimes." Dan Stone, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK Paul Weindling bases this study on the reconstruction of a victim group through individual victims' life histories, and by weaving the victims' experiences collectively together in terms of different groupings, especially gender, ethnicity and religion, age, and nationality. The timing of the experiments, where they occurred, how many victims there were, and who they were, is analysed, as are hitherto under-researched aspects such as Nazi anatomy and executions. The experiments are also linked, more broadly, to major elements in the dynamic and fluid Nazi power structure and the implementation of racial policies. The approach is informed by social history from below, exploring both the rationales and motives of perpetrators, but assessing these critically in the light of victim narratives. British Human Rights Organisations and Soviet Dissent, 1965-1985 Mark Hurst In the latter half of the 20th century, a number of dissidents engaged in a series of campaigns against the Soviet authorities and as a result were subjected to an array of cruel and violent punishments. A collection of like-minded activists in Britain campaigned on their behalf, and formed a variety of organisations to publicise their plight. British Human Rights Organisations and Soviet Dissent, 1965-1985 examines the efforts of these activists, exploring how influential their activism was with the public and in the wider international conflict of the Cold War. Mark Hurst explores the British response to Soviet human rights violation, drawing on extensive archival work and interviews with key activists and dissidents in this period. This book examines the network of human rights activists in Britain, and convincingly argues that the Soviet dissident movement needs to be considered in an international context. Inventing the Nation Carsten Humlebæk Part of the successful 'Inventing the Nation' history series, this book provides an authoritative and compelling history of Spain in the modern period. Humlebæk places a strong emphasis on the construction of the Spanish national identity and looks at how this identity has emerged and survived amidst the tensions created by the competing, distinct regional identities that exist within the country. Language and language policy, decisive factors in the development of these tensions, are thoroughly examined as Carsten Humlebæk explores the history of Spain along with the very nature of what it is to be Spanish. Beginning with the Napoleonic invasion and the annexation of Spain in 1808, Humlebæk traces Spain's political history through to the present day. He considers the impact of events like the Spanish Civil War and regimes like that of the Restoration on the Spanish sense of national identity before contemplating the future for Spain as a nation-state. This book is the ideal volume for all students of history interested in the modern history of Spain. A History of the Urals

France since the 1970s

Russia's Crucible from Early Empire to the Post-Soviet Era

History, Politics and Memory in an Age of Uncertainty

Paul Dukes

Edited by Emile Chabal

The Urals are best known as the boundary between Europe and Asia. A History of the Urals demonstrates the region's importance in its own right, as a crucible of Russia’s defence industry in particular. In the first English-language book to explore the subject fully, Paul Dukes examines the region's contribution to the power of the state in tsarist, Soviet and post-Soviet times, offering a refreshing antidote to Moscow-centric interpretations of Russian history. The book contextualises more recent periods with chapters on the earlier years of the Urals and covers the key environmental as well as economic, political and cultural themes. The book contains illustrations and maps, plus lists of books and websites, as aids to further research and understanding of the subject. A History of the Urals is an important book that provides new and valuable insights for all students of Russian history. Paul Dukes is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Aberdeen, UK. Spain

Until the mid-20th century, France saw itself as a great power with universalist aspirations and global ambitions. But the Second World War and decolonisation irrevocably changed France’s place in the world. Despite attempts to restore the country’s ‘grandeur’ in the 1960s, the French have been forced to reconcile themselves to their modest place at the heart of a changing Europe. What impact has this had on political life? How have the French reimagined the revolutionary, republican and reactionary ideologies that have been so crucial to their history? How has the arrival of hundreds of thousands of postcolonial migrants transformed politics? These are just some of the questions at the heart of France since the 1970s. With contributions from leading specialists on topics as varied as the legacy of empire and neo-liberalism, it explores how the French have dealt with the pervasive sense of uncertainty that has become a defining feature of contemporary European politics. The Development of AustroHungarian Sarajevo, 1878-1918

Place and Locality in Modern France

An Urban History

Edited by Philip Whalen & Patrick Young

Mary Sparks

Drawing on the expertise of a range of scholars from around the world, Place and Locality in Modern France is a timely overview of the cross-disciplinary thinking that is currently taking place around a central issue in French history.

The Development of Austro-Hungarian Sarajevo, 1878-1918 charts the urban history of Sarajevo in this period within the context of other modernising central-European cities. It gives detailed consideration to elements of change and continuity in the development of the urban fabric, as well as the economic, social and cultural life of the city. The book also explores how far changes were the work of the occupying Austro-Hungarian administration and the influx of immigrants from elsewhere, and suggests that the local elites from all confessions took an active role in the redevelopment of their city, building an integrated ‘Sarajevan’ version of urban modernity at a middle-class level. Case studies of particular buildings and their owners, and maps illustrating the chronological development of the city during the period, are used throughout the book to highlight aspects of the aforementioned themes. The built environment forms a major source of evidence, together with material from a range of other sources, including census records, directories, newspapers, government documents, planning records and postcards. These sources are also used to augment observations and arguments put forward in this important study for all students and scholars of modern Central and Eastern Europe.

British Liberators in the Age of Napoleon Volunteering under the Spanish Flag in the Peninsular War Graciela Iglesias Rogers

A Battle for Neutral Europe British Cultural Propaganda during the Second World War Edward Corse A Battle for Neutral Europe describes and analyses the forgotten story of the British government's cultural propaganda organization, the British Council, in its campaign to win the hearts and minds of people in neutral Europe during the Second World War. The book draws on a range of previously unused material from archives from across Europe and private memoirs to provide a unique insight into the work of the leading British artists, scientists, musicians and other cultural figures who travelled to Spain, Portugal, Sweden and Turkey at great personal risk to promote British life and thought in a time of war. Edward Corse shows how the British Council played a subtle but crucial role in Britain's war effort and draws together the lessons of the British Council experience to produce a new model of cultural propaganda.

"[This book] is excellent. It is full of strengths, original, clearly written, innovative, insightful. It overturns misconceptions about the British presence in the conflict, and opens up substantial new avenues for research." Matthew Brown, University of Bristol, UK "An interesting addition to the historiography [of the subject]." Charles Esdaile, University of Liverpool, UK, Journal for Eighteenth Century Studies This book unveils the role of a hitherto unrecognized group of men who, long before the International Brigades made its name in the Spanish Civil War, also found reasons to fight under the Spanish flag. Their enemy was not fascism, but what could be at times an equally overbearing ideology: Napoleon's imperialism. Although small in number, British volunteers played a surprisingly influential role in the conduct of war operations, in politics, gender and social equality, in cultural life both in Britain and Spain and even in relation to emancipation movements in Latin America. Some became prisoners of war while a few served with guerrilla forces. This book draws on previously untapped archival sources to argue that victory was the outcome of a truly transnational effort.

Edward Corse has a PhD from the University of Kent's Centre for the Study of Propaganda, War and Society.

The History of East-Central European Eugenics, 1900-1945 Sources and Commentaries Edited by Marius Turda The History of East-Central European Eugenics, 1900-1945 redefines the European history of eugenics by exploring the ideological transmission of eugenics internationally and its application locally in East-Central Europe. Using 100 primary sources translated from the East-Central European languages into English for the first time, in addition to the key contributions of leading scholars in the field from around Europe, this book examines the main eugenic organisations, as well as individuals and policies that shaped eugenics in Austria, Poland, former Czechoslovakia, former Yugoslavia, Hungary and Romania. It also explores the ways in which ethnic minorities interacted with national and international eugenics discourses to advance their own aims and ambitions, whilst providing a comparative analysis of the emergence and development of eugenics in East-Central Europe more generally. Complete with a glossary of terms, a list of all eugenic societies and journals from these countries, as well as a comprehensive bibliography, The History of East-Central European Eugenics, 1900-1945 is a pivotal reference work for students, researchers and academics interested in East-Central Europe and the history of science and national identity in the 20th century. The United States in the Long Twentieth Century Politics and Society since 1900 Michael Heale The United States in the Long Twentieth Century explores the nature of American politics and society in the period from 1900 to the present day, illuminating both the changes and the continuities. This was a period largely characterized by exceptional growth and international power, though one also assailed by the crises and divisions that Michael Heale carefully examines. A strength of the book is its integration of political with social history, and it thus explores a range of social, demographic and economic phenomena that have been central to American history in the 20th century, such as immigration and ethnicity, the labour, civil rights and environmental movements, and the role and achievements of women. This new and fully revised edition of the seminal student textbook Twentieth-Century America takes recent scholarship in the field into account and also includes a number of important new features, including: • A brand new chapter on the years from 2000 onwards, covering 9/11, the financial crisis, and the rise of Barack Obama • Substantial revisions to Part III, covering 1969 to the present day, and in particular to the material on Reagan, Clinton, African Americans, immigrants, the growth of the financial sector and (de)regulation and global warming; the limits of conservatism and the resilience of liberalism • Greater emphasis on the United States in a transnational world and within the context of the rise of globalization

Contemporary Sino-Japanese Relations on Screen

Debating Otaku in Contemporary Japan

A History, 1989-2005

Historical Perspectives and New Horizons

Griseldis Kirsch

Edited by Patrick W. Galbraith, Thiam Huat Kam & Björn-Ole Kamm

Covering the years from 1989 to 2005, this book looks at Sino-Japanese relations through film and television drama in the crucial time of China’s ascent to an economic superpower in opposition to Japan’s own ailing economy. It provides an overview of how Japan views China through its visual media, offers explanations as to how oppositions between the two countries came to exist, and how and why certain myths about China have been conveyed. Griseldis Kirsch argues that the influence of visual media within society cannot be underestimated, nor should their value be lessened by them being perceived as part of ‘popular culture’. Drawing on examples from a crucial 16 years in the history of post-war Japan and China, she explores to what extent these media were influenced by the political discourse of their time. Japanese Taiwan Colonial Rule and its Contested Legacy

Politics and Power in 20th Century Japan

Edited by Andrew D. Morris

The Reminiscences of Miyazawa Kiichi

Colonial agents worked for fifty years to make a Japanese Taiwan, using technology, culture, statistics, trade, and modern ideologies to remake their new territory according to evolving ideas of Japanese empire. Since the end of the Pacific War, this project has been remembered, imagined, nostalgized, erased, commodified, manipulated, idealized and condemned by different sectors of Taiwan’s population. The volume covers a range of topics, including colonial-era photography, exploration, postwar deportation, sport, film, media, economic planning, contemporary Japanese influences on Taiwanese popular culture, and recent nostalgia for and misunderstandings about the colonial era. Japanese Taiwan provides an interdisciplinary perspective on these related processes of colonization and decolonization, explaining how the memories, scars and traumas of the colonial era were utilized during the postwar period. It provides a unique critique of the ‘Japaneseness’ of the erstwhile Chinese Taiwan, thus bringing new scholarship to bear on problems in contemporary East Asian politics. Andrew D. Translated by Timothy S. George Miyazawa Kiichi played a leading role in Japan's government and politics from 1942 until 2003, during which time he served as Prime Minister, and also as Minister of Finance, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of International Trade and Industry, Director General of the Economic Planning Agency, and Chief Cabinet Secretary. In this oral history autobiography, he discusses with candor and detail a wide range of topics, including his 1939 visit to the United States, recovery policies during the postwar occupation, the San Francisco Peace Treaty, and Japan's role in international organizations such as GATT and OECD, and gives a thoughtful insider's view of six decades of Japanese politics, closing with his thoughts on Japan's role in the 21st century. Miyazawa's testimony contains the unmistakable richness of the words of one who was present as history was being made. The political candor, unmatched scope, and largely first-person narrative make this book unique. Timothy S. George is Professor of Japanese History at the University of Rhode Island, USA. Christianity and Imperialism in Modern Japan

Media, Propaganda and Politics in 20th Century Japan

Empire for God

Yoichi Funabashi

Emily Anderson

Translated by Barak Kushner

Christianity and Imperialism in Modern Japan explores how Japanese Protestants engaged with the unsettling changes that resulted from Japan's emergence as a world power in the early twentieth century. Through this analysis, the book offers a new perspective on the intersection of religion and imperialism in modern Japan. Emily Anderson reassesses religion as a critical site of negotiation between the state and its subjects as part of Japan's emergence as a modern nation-state and colonial empire. This book investigates the role played by the Asahi Daily News, one of Japan's largest daily newspapers, as a mediator of information and power during the twentieth century. Yoichi Funabashi, one of the most trusted public intellectuals in Japan, examines Asahi's role in Japanese history, showing how news agencies assisted in the creation and maintenance of the nation's goals, dreams and delusions. The book draws on internal documents, committee meeting notes and interviews with the staff at the company as a means to narrate what newspaper editors chose to publish during Japan's journey through the twentieth century. As well as offering an original insight into wartime media, Media, Propaganda and Politics in 20th Century Japan explores the media/society relationship during the postwar era and into the twenty-first century. Yoichi Funabashi is the former Editor-in-Chief of the Asahi Newspaper. He acquired his Ph.D. from Keio University, Japan and has held academic positions at Harvard University, USA, the Institute for International Economics, USA, Columbia University, USA and the University of Tokyo, Japan. The China Problem in Postwar Japan

Women and Democracy in Cold War Japan

Japanese National Identity and Sino-Japanese Relations

Jan Bardsley

Robert Hoppens The 1970s were a period of dramatic change in relations between Japan and the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The two countries established diplomatic relations for the first time, forged close economic ties and reached political agreements that still guide and constrain relations today. This book delivers a history of this foundational period in Sino-Japanese relations. It presents an up-to-date diplomatic history of the relationship but also goes beyond this to argue that Japan’s relations with China must be understood in the context of a larger 'China problem' that was inseparable from a domestic contest to define Japanese national identity. The China Problem in Postwar Japan challenges some common assertions or assumptions about the role of Japanese national identity in postwar Sino-Japanese relations, showing how the history of Japanese relations with China in the 1970s is shaped by the strength of Japanese national identity, not its weakness. “Through close readings of popular media—from contentious letters to newspaper editors to debates covered in women's magazines, from tales of flawed fashionistas to satirical cartoons— Women and Democracy in Cold War Japan takes an innovative approach to the gender politics shaping Japan in the 1950s.” Barbara Molony, Professor of History, Santa Clara University, USA Women and Democracy in Cold War Japan offers a fresh perspective on gender politics by focusing on the Japanese housewife of the 1950s as a controversial representation of democracy, leisure, and domesticity. Examining the shifting personae of the housewife, especially in the appealing texts of women’s magazines, reveals the diverse possibilities of postwar democracy as they were embedded in media directed toward Japanese women. Each chapter explores the contours of a single controversy, including debate over the royal wedding in 1959, the victory of Japan's first Miss Universe, and the unruly desires of postwar women. Jan Bardsley also takes a comparative look at the ways in which the Japanese housewife is measured against equally stereotyped notions of the modern housewife in the United States, asking how both function as narratives of Japan-U.S. relations and gender/class containment during the early Cold War. Decolonization and Europe's Imperial States

State, Economy and the Great Divergence

Martin Thomas, L. J. Butler & Bob Moore

Great Britain and China, 1680s-1850s

Crises of Empire offers a comprehensive and uniquely comparative analysis of the history of decolonization in the British, French and Dutch empires. By comparing the processes of decolonization across three of the major modern empires, from the aftermath of the First World War to the late 20th century, the authors analyse decolonization as a long-term process. They explore significant changes to the international system, shifting popular attitudes to colonialism and the economics of empire. This new edition incorporates the latest developments in the historiography, as well as: • Increased coverage of the Belgian and Portuguese empires • New introductions to each part, offering some background and context to British, French and Dutch decolonization • More coverage of cultural aspects of decolonization, exploring empire 'from below'

Peer Vries State, Economy and the Great Divergence provides a new analysis of what has become the central debate in global economic history: the 'great divergence' between European and Asian growth. Focusing on early modern China and Western Europe, this book offers a new level of detail on comparative state formation that has widereaching implications for European, Eurasian and global history. Beginning with a comprehensive overview of the historiography, Peer Vries goes on to extend and develop the debate, critically engaging with the huge volume of literature published on the topic to date. Incorporating new insights into the case of Europe, he offers a compelling alternative to the claims to East-West equivalence, or Asian superiority, which have come to dominate discourse surrounding this issue.

• A new glossary, explaining key terms

This is a vital update to a key issue in global economic history and, as such, is essential reading for students and scholars interested in keeping up to speed with the on-going debates.

This new edition of Crises of Empire is essential reading for all students of imperial history and decolonization.

Peer Vries is University Professor at the Institute for Economic and Social History, University of Vienna, Austria.

Martin Thomas is Professor of History at the University of Exeter, UK. L. J. Butler is Emeritus Reader at the University of East Anglia, UK. Bob Moore is Professor of 20th Century European History at the University of Sheffield, UK.

History and International Relations

From the Ancient World to the 21st Century

As Undersecretary of State for the Colonies, Winston S. Churchill toured Britain's territories in East Africa. This book documents his travels and the people he met; he waxes lyrical on the natural beauty of Uganda and goes on to explore Egypt and Sudan via the White Nile. More than a travelogue however, Churchill, now in his 30s, turns his attention towards issues of government and development, suggesting that the best way to tap the latent wealth of East Africa was the development of the railway system. His ruminations on settlement, race and government provide an intriguing insight into contemporary imperialism and African history.

Howard LeRoy Malchow History and International Relations examines, from an historian’s perspective, the evolution of international relations as a discipline and charts its engagement with the history of war, peace, and foreign relations from the ancient world to the present day. In three sections, it looks at the field’s development, its contribution to historical narrative, and its contemporary practice: 'The History of a Discipline' locates the development of IR scholarship in its own historical contexts, examining the origin of dominant IR theories, their use of historical evidence, and their relation to other social science disciplines. 'IR and International History' explores key moments in the history of war and peace, from the Peloponnesian War to the Cold War and beyond, and the role they played in constructing the discipline. The final section, 'Contemporary IR and the Uses of History', reflects on the current ferment in IR over its Eurocentric theory and practice, its key concepts of state and sovereignty, the impact of non-state actors and human rights, and 'the return of history'.

Eurasian Growth in a Global Perspective

Alexander Johnston

Alessandro Stanziani "By revisiting the history of Russia and Eurasia in the context of global history, Stanziani is successful in breaking a number of our preconceptions. Indispensable for those who are keen to reconsider the conventional narrative and understanding of the history of the world." Haneda Masashi, University of Tokyo, Japan The concepts of economic backwardness, Asiatic despotism and orientalism have strongly influenced perceptions of modernization, democracy and economic growth over the last three centuries. This book provides an original view of Russian and Asian history that views both in a global perspective. Via this analysis, Alessandro Stanziani opens new dimensions in the study of state formation, the global slave trade, warfare and European and Asian growth. After Oriental Despotism questions conventional oppositions between Europe and Asia. By revisiting the history of Eurasia in this context, the book offers a serious challenge to existing ideas about the aims and goals of economic growth. "Alexander Johnston has written a carefully thought-out and impeccable tour de force of sober and sobering analysis. He diagnoses every aspect of the contemporary South African condition with a care and commitment to research and balance that makes other scholars feel ashamed. This is without doubt the best book on South Africa since it attained majority rule." Stephen Chan, SOAS, University of London, UK South Africa is an exploration of nation-building in post-apartheid South Africa. Johnston tracks the rise of the ANC and the idea of nationalism to the 'critical moment' of 1990-1994 when the end of communism and the cold war triggered an ethno-nationalist resurgence. He then explores the place nationalism inhabits in the 'new' South Africa, asking whether there is such a thing as the South African nation at all. In doing so, he investigates both the political framework of constitution and competing agendas and the cultural context of language, memory and identity. Alexander Johnston is a research associate of the University of KwaZuluNatal, where he was Professor of Political Science from 1994 to 2002. Decolonization and the Cold War Negotiating Independence Edited by Leslie James & Elisabeth Leake The Cold War and decolonization transformed the twentieth century world. This volume brings together an international line-up of experts to explore how these transformations took place and expand on some of the latest threads of analysis to help inform our understanding of the links between the two phenomena. The book begins by exploring ideas of modernity, development, and economics as Cold War and postcolonial projects and goes on to look at the era’s intellectual history and investigate how emerging forms of identity fought for supremacy. Finally, the contributors question ideas of sovereignty and state control that move beyond traditional Cold War narratives. In the wake of the protests that toppled regimes across the Middle East in 2011, Sudanese activists and writers have proudly cited their very own ‘Arab Springs’ of 1964 and 1985, which overthrew the country’s first two military regimes, as evidence of their role as political pioneers in the region. Whilst some of these claims may be exaggerated, Sudan was indeed unique in the region at the time in that it witnessed not one but two popular uprisings which successfully uprooted military authoritarianisms. Civil Uprisings in Modern Sudan provides the first scholarly booklength history of the 1964 and 1985 uprisings. It explores the uprisings themselves, their legacy and the contemporary relevance they hold in the context of the current political climate of the Middle East. The book also contends that the sort of politics espoused by various kinds of Islamist during the uprisings can be interpreted as a form of early ‘post-Islamism’, in which Islamist political agendas were seen to be compatible with liberalism and democracy. Using interviews, Arabic language sources and a wealth of archival material, this book is an important and original study that is of great significance for scholars of African and Middle Eastern political history. The Portuguese Massacre of Wiriyamu in Colonial Mozambique, 1964-2013 Mustafah Dhada Forward by Peter Pringle This book explores why the massacre took place, what Wiriyamu was like prior to the massacre, how events unfolded, how we came to know about it and what the impact of the massacre was, particularly for the Portugese empire. Spanning the period from 1964 to 2013, this chronologically arranged work covers the liberation war in Mozambique and uses fieldwork, interviews, film, images and archival sources to place the massacre firmly in its historical context. Mustafah Dhada is Professor of History at California State University, USA. He is the author of Warriors at Work (1993).

Kenneth Morgan This book provides a thoroughly researched biography of the naval career of Matthew Flinders, with particular emphasis on his importance for the maritime discovery of Australia. Sailing in the wake of the eighteenth-century voyages of exploration by Captain Cook and others, Flinders was the first naval commander to circumnavigate Australia's coastline. He contributed more to the mapping and naming of places in Australia than virtually any other single person. His voyage to Australia on H.M.S. Investigator expanded the scope of imperial, geographical and scientific knowledge. This biography places Flinders's career within the context of Pacific exploration and the early white settlement of Australia. Flinders's connections with other explorers, his use of patronage, the dissemination of his findings, and his posthumous reputation are also discussed in what is an important new scholarly work in the field.

Peter Pringle is a foreign correspondent, investigative reporter and writer. He is the co-author of Those Are Real Bullets: Bloody Sunday, Derry, 1972 (2000).

Imperial Co-operation and Transfer, 1870-1930

Latin Eugenics in Comparative Perspective

Empires and Encounters

Marius Turda & Aaron Gillette

Edited by Volker Barth & Roland Cvetkovski Conflict and competition between imperial powers has long been a feature of global history, but their co-operation has largely been a peripheral concern. Imperial Co-operation and Trasfer, 1870-1930 redresses this imbalance, providing a coherent conceptual framework for the study of inter-imperial collaboration and arguing that it deserves an equally prominent position in the field. Using a variety of examples from across Asia, Europe and Africa, this edited collection demonstrates the ways in which empires have shared and exchanged their knowledge about imperial governance, including military strategy, religious influence and political surveillance. It asks how, when and where these partnerships took place, and who initiated them. Not only does this book fill an empirical gap in the study of imperial history, it traces ideas of empire from their conception in imperial contact zones to their implementation in specific contexts. As such, this is an important study for imperial and global historians of all specialisms. Matthew Flinders, Maritime Explorer of Australia

"Based on a vast bibliography and on original archival investigations, the book explores a new dimension of the internationalisation of eugenics in Europe and Latin America, which opens a window on a number of research issues, including the relevance of biotypology and the complex reformulation of eugenics in the post-war period." Francesco Cassata, author of Building the New Man: Eugenics, Racial Science and Genetics in Twentieth-Century Italy Latin eugenics was a scientific, cultural and political programme designed to biologically empower modern European and American nations once commonly described as ‘Latin’, sharing genealogical, linguistic, religious, and cultural origins. Latin Eugenics in Comparative Perspective offers a comparative, nuanced approach to eugenics as a scientific programme as well as a cultural and political phenomenon. It examines the commonalities of eugenics in ‘Latin’ Europe and Latin America. As a program to achieve the social and political goals of modern welfare systems, Latin eugenics strongly influenced the complex relationship of the state to the individual. Drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary sources in many languages, this book offers the first history of Latin eugenics in Europe and the Americas. International Trade in the 1970s

Carson's Silent Spring

The US, the EC and the Growing Pressure of Protectionism

A Reader's Guide

Giuseppe La Barca The 1970s marked the end of the years in which the United States was the guarantor of a free world trade order, while Western Europe made efforts to catch up with the economic superpower. In this book, Dr. La Barca explains how the trade environment and trade policies in the United States and in the European Community during the 1970s were more complex than frequently acknowledged. In particular, he examines the promotion of greater governmental protection of national industries and the relationship between such tendencies and the negotiations aimed at reducing trade barriers. This analysis shows how the United States and the European Community agreed to pursue their protectionist practices, thereby creating a barrier to serious efforts to enable free trade. A History of Environmentalism Local Struggles, Global Histories Ten contributors from a range of disciplines provide a history of environmentalism which frames global themes and narrates local stories. Each of the chapters in this volume addresses specific struggles in the history of environmental movements, for example over national parks, species protection, forests, waste, contamination, nuclear energy and expropriation. A diverse range of environments and environmental actors are covered, including the communities in the Amazonian Forest, the antelope in Tibet, atomic power plants in Europe and oil and politics in the Niger Delta. The chapters demonstrate how these conflicts make visible the intricate connections between local and global, the body and the environment, and power and nature. A History of Environmentalism tells us much about transformations of cultural perceptions and ways of production and consuming, as well as ecological and social changes. A History of Environmentalism highlights the importance of the experience of environmentalism within local communities. New Views on Environmental History Edited by James Beattie, Edward Melillo & Emily O'Gorman 19th-century British imperial expansion dramatically shaped today‘s globalised world. Imperialism encouraged mass migrations of people, shifting flora, fauna and commodities around the world and led to a series of radical environmental changes never before experienced in history. EcoCultural Networks and the British Empire explores how these networks shaped ecosystems, cultures and societies throughout the British Empire, and how they were themselves transformed by local and regional conditions. This multi-authored volume begins with a rigorous theoretical analysis of the categories of ‘empire’ and ‘imperialism’. Its chapters, written by leading scholars in the field, draw methodologically from recent studies in environmental history, post-colonial theory, and the history of science. Together, these perspectives provide a comprehensive historical understanding of how the British Empire reshaped the globe during the 19th and 20th centuries. This book will be an important addition to the literature on British imperialism and global ecological change. James Beattie is Senior Lecturer at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Rethinking World War Two

The Story of the Malakand Field Force Sir Winston S. Churchill Seeking military distinction, the 22-year-old Winston S. Churchill talked his way into the Malakand Field Force as a war correspondent, reporting on the front line in a struggle against restless frontier tribes. Churchill describes dramatic campaigns, his writing always rooted in the exotic and, at times, adverse environment of the Northwest Frontier, an area now part of Pakistan. This experience of entrenched and increasingly mechanized warfare likely influenced his command during the First World War, when he was better able than most to understand the nature of military stalemate. In this, his first book, he collected his reports of the conflict, providing a fascinating look at the start of Churchill's career as a writer and as a soldier. The Conflict and its Legacy

British Culture and the First World War

Jeremy Black

Experience, Representation and Memory

"Black has the ability to say more in sentence than most historians in a paragraph. Here he analyzes World War Two by discussing its events in the contexts of recollection and memorialization. He asks how the conflict’s key aspects, causes, conduct and politics are addressed and understood in ongoing debates that make the war a recovered and living memory as well as a received one." Dennis Showalter, Colorado College, USA In Rethinking World War Two, Jeremy Black explores the contesting accounts and interpretations of the war, critically examining the leading controversies surrounding the conflict, its aftermath and its ongoing significance in the modern world. The first half of the book considers controversies surrounding the course of the war, with chapters looking at the importance of military history, the causes of the war, politics and grand strategy and domestic politics. The second half goes on to consider the memory of the war and its echoes in political and military spheres, with chapters devoted to the memory of the war in Europe and in Asia. A detailed further reading section provides guidance on how to take study of various topics further. Jeremy Black is Professor of History at the University of Exeter, UK, and a Senior Fellow at the Center for the Study of America and the West at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, USA.

Toby Thacker The First World War has been mythologized since 1918, and many paradigmatic views of it - that it was pointless, that brave soldiers were needlessly sacrificed - are deeply embedded in the British consciousness. More than in any other country, these collective British memories were influenced by the experiences and the work of writers, painters and musicians. This book revisits the British experience of the War through the eyes and ears of a diverse group of carefully selected novelists, poets, composers and painters. It examines how they reacted to and portrayed their experiences in the trenches on the Western Front, in distant theatres of war and on the home front, in words, pictures and music that would have a profound influence on subsequent British perceptions of the war. The book includes illustrations, maps and a companion website to aid further study and research. Toby Thacker is Lecturer in Modern European History at Cardiff University, UK. Thunder in the East

The Wars of German Unification

The Nazi-Soviet War 1941-1945

Dennis Showalter

Evan Mawdsley

The Wars of German Unification is the definitive account of the three of the most decisive conflicts in the history of modern Europe. In this new edition, Dennis Showalter offers a thoroughly updated look at the wars and their context that will be invaluable for those interested in the military, social and political history of the period.

Thunder in the East, originally published in 2005, is widely regarded as the best short history of the entire Nazi-Soviet military conflict. It tells the story from the pre-war expectations of Hitler and Stalin, through the pivotal battles deep in Russia in 1942-43, and on to the huge Soviet offensives across Eastern Europe in 1944-45. The book provides penetrating answers to vital questions: Why did the war in the East develop as it did? Why did Hitler’s Wehrmacht lose? Why did the Red Army win, and why did the people of Soviet Russia pay such a high price for victory? The first edition took advantage of the flood of new sources that followed the end of the Soviet era. This second edition takes account of what has been written over the last decade; the Nazi-Soviet war, in all its aspects, has continued to be the subject of extensive and innovative research and heated controversy.

Showalter explores how the Schleswig-Holstein conflict of 1864; the ‘Six Weeks War' of 1866; and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 fundamentally altered the balance of power in 19th century Europe. The Wars of German Unification offers a balanced and incisive account of the wars, their origins and their consequences, and firmly embeds these conflicts in their political, ideological and military contexts. This volume traces the transition from the ‘cabinet wars' of the 19th century and shows how the conflicts that made up the wars of German unification provided the foundation for the birth of modern warfare.

War and Memory in 20th-Century Europe

The Life of Field Marshal Lord Roberts

David A. Messenger

Rodney Atwood

War and Memory in 20th-Century Europe outlines how and where the memory of 20th-century European conflict is located in contemporary society. Through an analysis of the collective memory of various conflicts, it demonstrates that knowledge of how different societies and cultures remember their experience of war is crucial to understanding the history of 20thcentury Europe. The book begins by examining the definition of cultural memory and the key theories and methodologies involved in its study, before going on to examine key case studies in the memory of conflict, including the First World War, the Russian Revolution, the Second World War, occupation and the Holocaust, the wars of decolonization, the Spanish Civil War and the Yugoslav Wars. The book provides a history of memory and a focus on memory spaces and memory practices following conflict, looking in particular at how memory has emerged in public spaces such as public parks, museums, and memorial sites. Readers are supported throughout with maps, illustrations and detailed further reading suggestions. David A. "Rodney Atwood has now provided a balanced re-assessment of the often controversial role of Roberts, from campaigns in Afghanistan and South Africa to that for conscription before the First World War. It is an indispensable contribution to the historiography of the Victorian and Edwardian army." Ian Beckett, University of Kent, UK This biography of Field Marshall Lord Roberts charts a remarkable life that spanned the apogee of the British Empire. During a diverse career, Roberts won the Victoria Cross, planned the strategic defence of India, turned the tide of war in South Africa, introduced army reform and campaigned for National Service before 1914. Rodney Atwood explores his military career, in particular his role as a tactician and strategist in Afghanistan, Burma the North-West frontier, South Africa and Europe, but also looks at Roberts as a symbol of Empire and explores his celebration in British culture. Rodney Atwood received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK and has served in the Royal Tank Regiment. John Forbes

Scotland, Flanders and the Seven Years' War, 1707-1759 John Oliphant In November 1758, Brigadier General John Forbes's army expelled the French army from Fort Duquesne at the forks of the Ohio River. Over seven months Forbes had co-ordinated three obstructive and competitive colonies, managed Indian diplomacy, and cut a road through over a hundred miles of mountain and forest. This is the first full biography of Forbes, which traces his rise from surgeon in the Scots Greys to distinguished service in War of the Austrian Succession before his 1757 posting to North America. John Oliphant puts Forbes's life and career in the wider context of the social and military world of the 18th century and offers important insights into the Seven Years' War in North America. The Russo-Turkish War, 1768-1774 Catherine II and the Ottoman Empire Brian L. Davies The Russo-Turkish War was one of the most decisive conflicts of the 18th century. In this book, Brian Davies offers a thorough survey of the war and explains why it was crucial to the political triumph of Catherine the Great, the southward expansion of the Russian Empire, and the rollback of Ottoman power from southeastern Europe. The war completed the incorporation of Ukraine into the Russian Empire, ended the independence of the great Cossack hosts, removed once and for all the military threat from the Crimean Khanate, began the partitions of Poland, and encouraged Catherine II to plan projects to complete the 'liberation' of the lower Danubian and Balkan Slavs and Greeks. The war legitimated and secured the power of Catherine II, finally made the Pontic steppe safe for agricultural colonization, and won ports enabling Russia to control the Black Sea and become a leading grain exporter. Traditionally historians (Sorel, for example) have treated this war as the beginning of the 'Eastern Question', the question of how the European powers should manage the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Serbia and the Balkan Front, 1914 The Outbreak of the Great War James Lyon Serbia and the Balkan Front, 1914 is the first history of the Great War to address how the crucial events of 1914 played out over the Balkan Front. James Lyon demonstrates how blame for the war can be placed squarely on terrorism sponsored by structures within Serbia’s parallel security services and Austria-Hungary’s expansionist plans and internal political tensions. In doing so, he portrays the background and events of the Sarajevo Assassination and the subsequent military campaigns and diplomacy on the Balkan Front during 1914. Lyon challenges existing historiography that contends the Habsburg Army was ill-prepared for war, and shows that the Dual Monarchy was in fact far superior in manpower and technology to the Serbian Army, thus laying blame on Austria-Hungary’s military leadership rather than its state of readiness. Based on archival sources from Belgrade, Sarajevo, and Vienna and using never-before seen material to discuss secret negotiations between Turkey and Belgrade to carve up Albania, as well as Serbia’s near-surrender to Austria-Hungary in November 1914, Serbia and the Balkan Front, 1914 enriches one's understanding of the outbreak of the war and Serbia’s role in modern Europe. It will be of great importance to students and scholars of the history of World War I as well as military, diplomatic and modern European history.

Gabrielle Petit The Death and Life of a Female Spy in the First World War Sophie De Schaepdrijver "An excellent study of the life and afterlife of a young woman turned spy turned martyr turned icon of Belgian sacrifice. It is a fine and powerful addition to the growing literature on the cultural history of the Great War." Jay Winter, Yale, USA In central Brussels stands a statue of a young woman. Built in 1923, it is the first monument to a working-class woman in European history. Her name was Gabrielle Petit. History has forgotten Petit, an ambitious and patriotic Belgian, executed by firing squad in 1916 for her role as an intelligence agent for the British Army. After the First World War she was celebrated as an example of stern endeavour, but a hundred years later her memory has faded. In the first part of this historical biography Sophie De Schaepdrijver uses Petit's life to explore gender, class and heroism in the context of occupied Europe. Her experiences reveal the reality of civilian engagement under military occupation and the emergence of modern espionage. The second part of the book focuses on the legacy and cultural memory of Petit and the First World War.

Gibraltar and the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39 Local, National and International Perspectives Julio Ponce Alberca Translated by Irene Sánchez González "In this first book length investigation of Gibraltar’s role in the Spanish Civil War, Julio Ponce Alberca brings together for the first time archival resources from the UK, Spain and Gibraltar to produce a fascinating insight into the part played by Gibraltar in the Nationalist victory ... This extensive study not only reveals much of the untold story of Gibraltar in the 1930s but also sheds fresh light on key events of the day." Chris Grocott, University of Leicester, UK Incorporating local, national and international dimensions of the conflict, Gibraltar and the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39 provides the first detailed account of the British enclave Gibraltar's role during and after the Spanish Civil War. This book explores how British authorities in Gibraltar ostensibly initiated a formal policy of neutrality when the uprising took place, only for the Gibraltarian authorities to provide real support for the Nationalists under the surface. The book draws on a wealth of primary source material, some of it little-known before now, to deliver a significant contribution to our knowledge of the part played by democratic powers in the 1930s' confrontation between Communism and Fascism.

Hitler's Scandinavian Legacy Edited by John Gilmour & Jill Stephenson The Scandinavian [Nordic] countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland experienced the effects of the German invasion in April 1940 in very different ways. Collaboration, resistance, and co-belligerency were only some of the short-term consequences. Each country's historiography has undergone enormous changes in the seventy years since the invasion, and this collection by leading historians examines the immediate effects of Hitler's aggression as well as the long-term legacies for each country's self-image and national identity.

Black Shame African Soldiers in Europe, 1914-1922 Dick van Galen Last Edited by Ralf Futselaar & Bob Moore Translated by Marjolijn de Jager

British Army Communications in the Second World War Lifting the Fog of Battle Simon Godfrey Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence form the backbone of the Army's operating system. But while much attention has been given in the literature to the other three elements, Communications in the British Army during World War II have been widely ignored. This book shows that failures in front line communications contributed to several of the set backs suffered by the Army but also that ultimate victory was only achieved after a successful communications system was in place. It explains how the outcome of the main campaigns in Europe and North Africa depended on communications, how the system operated and how it evolved from a relatively primitive and inadequately supplied state at Dunkirk to a generally effective system at the time of the Rhine crossings. In Black Shame, Dick van Galen Last provides an exceptionally detailed analysis of the recruitment, deployment and reactions to African soldiers in the WWI European theatre of war. The book also paints a vivid picture of the wider debates of race and national identity which the use of African troops sparked or fueled within the main actors on the WWI scene: France, Britain, Germany and even the US. Drawing on war-time attitudes, the author proceeds to explore the reality and longterm consequences of the participation of African regiments in the post-war occupation of the German territories. Wide-ranging, both geographically and thematically, the first publication of its kind, Black Shame adds a fresh, truly comparative perspective to the scholarship in the fields of imperial and military history, as well as war studies and postcolonial studies, and will appeal to academics and postgraduate students alike. Military Law, the State, and Citizenship in the Modern Age An International History

The Lost Cause of the Confederacy and American Civil War Memory

Gerard Oram

David J. Anderson

Military law and punishments have far too often been marginalised by historians and criminologists alike. Given the extent to which populations have been subjected to varying forms of military authority during the modern era, this neglect amounts to a serious shortcoming. The influence of military law extends far beyond that of military service; it impacts upon on civilians both as individuals and groups that have, in turn, impacted upon military law. Through the careful analysis of significant events and case studies, Military Law, the State, and Citizenship in the Modern Age examines this and other key themes of state formation and citizenship. Gerard Oram here argues that military authority - either as separate from the state or as a direct extension of it - performed a key role in shaping the relationship between the state and its citizens in modern Western societies. Cultural Responses to Occupation in Japan The Performing Body During and After the Cold War Adam Broinowski Cultural Responses to Occupation in Japan examines how the performing arts, and the performing body specifically, have shaped and been shaped by the political and historical conditions experienced in Japan during the Cold War and post-Cold War periods. This study of original and secondary materials from the fields of theatre, dance, performance art, film and poetry probes the interrelationship that exists between the body and the nation-state. Important artistic works, such as Ankoku Butoh (dance of darkness) and its subsequent re-interpretation by a leading political performance company Gekidan Kaitaisha (theatre of deconstruction), are analysed using ethnographic, historical and theoretical modes. This approach reveals the nuanced and prolonged effects of military, cultural and political occupation in Japan over a duration of dramatic change. Cultural Responses to Occupation in Japan explores issues of discrimination, marginality, trauma, memory and the mediation of history in a ground-breaking work that will be of great significance to anyone interested in the symbiosis of culture and conflict. The nostalgia created by and within the intellectual and literary movement of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy has, until now, received relatively little scholarly attention when one considers the veritable explosion of memory debates in social, political, and cultural studies over the last two decades or so. This book examines the ways in which the ways in which white and black southerners used historical material to define and understand themselves - issues that have been the vanguard of recent research in southern history. Taking as its thematic starting point the Confederacy's defeat in 1865, this book builds on the idea that memories are produced out of experience before then, in turn, reshaping them. Using diaries, letters, reminiscences, magazines, fiction and film, The Lost Cause of the Confederacy and American Civil War Memory illustrates how the creation of the Lost Cause was at once political and emotional, not only reflecting the political, economic and racial interests it served, but also reflecting the genuine desire to compensate for what had been loved and lost. Filming the End of the Holocaust Allied Documentaries, Nuremberg and the Liberation of the Concentration Camps John J. Michalczyk Filming the End of the Holocaust considers how the US Government commissioned the US Signal Corps and other filmmakers to document the horrors of the concentration camps during the April-May 1945 liberation. These films, some produced by the Soviets, were integral to the war crime trials that followed the Holocaust and the Second World War, and this book provides a thorough, close analysis of the footage in these films and their historical significance. Using research carried out at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the US National Archives and the film collection at the National Center for Jewish Film at Brandeis University, this book explores the rationale for filming the atrocities and their use in the subsequent trials of Nazi officials in greater detail than anything previously published. It includes an extensive bibliography and filmography. John J. Michalczyk is Professor and Director of Film Studies at Boston College, USA. William Howe and the American War of Independence

War and State-Building in Afghanistan

David Smith

Historical and Modern Perspectives

The first major work on this enigmatic British general for more than 40 years, William Howe and the American War of Independence offers fascinating new insights into his performance during the revolution in America.

Edited by Scott Gates & Kaushik Roy

From 1775 to 1777, Howe commanded the largest expeditionary force Britain had ever amassed, confronting the rebel army under George Washington and enjoying a string of victories. However, his period in command ended in confusion, bitterness and a parliamentary inquiry, because he proved unable to crush the rebellion. Exactly what went wrong has puzzled historians for more than 200 years. For most Howe has been relegated to the role of a bit player, but, with the help of new evidence, this book looks afresh at his army, his relationships with key military and political figures and his own personal qualities. The result is a compelling reassessment of a forgotten general that offers a new perspective on a man who won his battles, but could not win his war. Youth, Heroism and Naval Propaganda

Conflict and Soldiers' Literature in Early Modern Europe

Britain and the Young Maritime Hero, 17451820

The Reality of War

D. A. B. Ronald Youth, Heroism and Naval Propaganda explores how the young maritime hero became a major new figure of war propaganda in the second half of the long 18th century. At that time, Britain was searching for a new national identity, and the young maritime hero and his exploits conjured images of vigour, energy, enthusiasm and courage. Adopted as centrepiece in a campaign of concerted war-propaganda leading up to the Battle of Trafalgar, the young hero came to represent much that was quintessentially British at this major turning-point in the Nation's history. By drawing on a wide range of sources, this study shows how the young hero gave maritime youth a symbolic power which it had never before had in Britain. It offers a valuable contribution to the field of British military and naval history, as well as the study of British identity, youth, heroism and propaganda. D. A. B. Paul Scannell "Scannell provides a provocative interpretation of military writings through the lens of the 'public sphere' that reflects the latest historiographical trends in the field." Mark Fissel, Georgia Regents University, USA In Conflict and Soldiers' Literature in Early Modern Europe, Paul Scannell analyses the late 16th-century and early 17th-century literature of warfare through the published works of English, Welsh and Scottish soldiers. The book explores the dramatic increase in printed material on many aspects of warfare; the diversity of authors, the adaptation of existing writing traditions and the growing public interest in military affairs. This book provides a reassessment of early modern warfare by viewing it from the perspective of those who experienced it directly. Paul Scannell highlights how various types of soldier viewed their commitment to war, while also considering the impact of published early modern material on domestic military capability - the 'art of war'. Paul Scannell is currently serving as a Canadian Regular Army officer and has a PhD in history. The D-Day Landing on Gold Beach

Post-war Japan as a Sea Power

6 June 1944

Imperial Legacy, Wartime Experience and the Making of a Navy

Andrew Holborn The Normandy landings of 6 June 1944, across five sectors of the French coast - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword - constituted the largest amphibious invasion in history. This study analyses in depth the preparations and implementation of the D-Day landing on Gold Beach by XXX Corps. Historians have tended to dismiss the landing on Gold Beach as straightforward but the evidence points to a different reality. Armour supported the infantry landing and prior bombing was intended to weaken German defences; however, the bulk of the bombing landed too far inland, and many craft foundered in difficult conditions at sea. It was the tenacity of the assault units and the flexibility of the follow up units which enabled the Gold landing to secure the right flank of the British Army in Normandy. Using detailed primary evidence from The National Archives and the Imperial War Museum, this volume provides a substantial assessment of the background to the landing on Gold, and analyses the events of D-Day in the wider context of the Normandy Campaign. Andrew Holborn is an independent scholar and the author of The 56th Infantry Brigade and D-Day (2012). In Post-war Japan as a Sea Power, Alessio Patalano incorporates new, exclusive source material to develop an innovative approach to the study of post-war Japan as a military power. This archivalbased history of Asia's most advanced navy, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF), looks beyond the traditional perspective of viewing the modern Japanese military in light of the country's alliance with the US. The book places the institution in a historical context, analysing its imperial legacy and the role of Japan's shattering defeat in WWII in the post-war emergence of Japan as East Asia’s ‘sea power’. The Holocaust in the Polish Countryside A Witness Testimony and Historical Account Alina Skibinska & Tadeusz Markiel Translated by Anna Solarska

The 1711 Expedition to Quebec Politics and the Limitations of British Global Strategy Adam Lyons In 1711, the newly formed Great Britain launched its first attempt to conquer French North America. The largest military force ever assembled to fight on the continent was dispatched and combined with colonial American units in Boston before proceeding up the St Lawrence River for Quebec. An additional colonial force set out from Albany to march on Montreal - but neither Briton nor colonist reached their respective targets. Adam Lyons looks at the expedition as a product of the turbulent political environment at the end of Queen Anne's reign and as a symbol of a shift in politics and strategy. Its failure proved to be detrimental to the reputation of the expedition's naval commander, Rear-Admiral Sir Hovenden Walker, but Lyons shows how true blame should lie with his political master, Secretary of State Henry St John, who ensured the expedition's failure by maintaining absolute control and secrecy. The 1711 Expedition to Quebec demonstrates how the expedition helped to alter British policy by renewing an interest in 'blue water', or maritime, operations that would gain dominance for Britain in commerce and at sea. This strategy would later see huge success, ultimately resulting in the fall of Quebec to Wolfe and the eventual conquest of French North America in the Seven Years' War. Adam Lyons is a Strategic Analyst with the Ministry of Defence. He is also Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, UK. The Holocaust in the Polish Countryside is the much-awaited English translation of the awardwinning book by Alina Skibinska. Complete with a Foreword by Neighbors and Golden Harvest author Jan T. Gross, the book is in part the incredibly moving first-hand witness testimony of Tadeusz Markiel and his recollection of life as a Polish, Catholic boy in the rural town of Gniewczyna. His narrative, supplemented with extensive academic footnotes from Alina Skibinska, recounts life in the Polish countryside prior to the Nazis, before describing in horrifying detail the torture, rape, pillaging and betrayal of his Jewish neighbours that took place. Skibinska builds on this with a sensitive historical account that serves to corroborate, enrich and contextualise Markiel's testimony. This book, includes useful transcripts from post-war trials and correspondence between residents and former residents of Gniewczyna. It provides readers with extensive source material in English here for the first time and delivers new insights into burgeoning Holocaust studies topics. Tadeusz Markiel (1929-2010) grew up in Gniewczyna, in South-Eastern Poland and witnessed the Holocaust as it related to his village. Markiel waited until everyone mentioned in his testimony had passed away before sharing it, having spent decades haunted by what he saw. Alina Skibinska is a Polish historian of the Holocaust and founding member of the Centre for Holocaust Research in Warsaw, Poland. Anna Solarska completed a PhD thesis in History under the supervision of Professor Dan Stone at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. Jan T. Gross is Professor of War and Society and Professor of History at Princeton University, USA. Perspectives on the Holocaust A series of books designed to help students further their understanding of key topics within the feild of Holocaust studies.

Holocaust Representations in History

Postwar Germany and the Holocaust

An Introduction

Caroline Sharples

Daniel H. Magilow & Lisa Silverman "Magilow and Silverman perceptively analyze how iconic and controversial Holocaust accounts, documentaries, films, memoirs, monuments, museums, novels, and trials were influenced by the historical context in which they originated and the perspectives of their creators ... Their jargon-free case studies will enable students to apply the same critical approach to other key works that attempt to depict or document the Nazi genocide of the Jews." Lawrence Baron, San Diego State University, USA Holocaust Representations in History is an introduction to critical questions and debates surrounding the depiction, chronicling and memorialization of the Holocaust through the historical analysis of some of the most provocative and significant works of Holocaust representation. In a series of chronologically presented case studies, the book introduces the major themes and issues of Holocaust representation across a variety of media and genres. Each work's specific historical and cultural significance is then discussed to provide further insight into the impact of one of the most devastating events of the 20th century and the continued relevance of its memory. This book is complete with illustrations, a bibliography and suggestions for further reading, key terms and discussion questions. Daniel H. Magilow is Associate Professor of German at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA.

Focussing on German responses to the Holocaust since 1945, Postwar Germany and the Holocaust traces the process of Vergangenheitsbewältigung ('overcoming the past'), the persistence of silences, evasions and popular mythologies with regards to the Nazi era, and cultural representations of the Holocaust up to the present day. It explores the complexities of German memory cultures, the construction of war and Holocaust memorials and the various political debates and scandals surrounding the darkest chapter in German history. The book comparatively maps out the legacy of the Holocaust in both East and West Germany, as well as the unified Germany that followed, to engender a consideration of the effects of division, Cold War politics and reunification on German understanding of the Holocaust. Synthesizing key historiographical debates and drawing upon a variety of primary source material, this volume is an important exploration of Germany's postwar relationship with the Holocaust.

Holocaust Remembrance Between the National and the Transnational The Stockholm International Forum and the First Decade of the International Task Force Larissa Allwork This book provides a key study of the remembrance of the Jewish Catastrophe and the Nazi-era past in the world arena. It uses a range of primary documentation from the restitution conferences, speeches and presentations made at the Stockholm International Forum of 2000 (SIF 2000), a global event and an attempt to mark a defining moment in the inter-cultural construction of the political and institutional memory of the Holocaust in the USA, Europe and Israel. Containing oral history interviews with British delegates to the conference and contemporary press reports, this book explores the inter-relationships between global and national Holocaust remembrances. The causes, consequences and ‘cosmopolitan' intellectual context for understanding the SIF 2000 are discussed in great detail. A Cultural History of the Senses

Edited by Matt Cook & Jennifer V. Evans

Edited by Constance Classen

Queer Cities, Queer Cultures Queer Cities, Queer Cultures examines the formation and make-up of urban subcultures and situates them against the stories typically told about Europe's watershed moments in the post 1945 period. The book considers the degree to which the iconic events of 1945, 1968 and 1989 influenced the social and sexual climate of the ensuing decades, raising questions about the form and structure of the 1960s sexual revolution, and forcing us to think about how we define sexual liberalization - and where, how and on whose terms it occurs.

With six volumes covering 2,500 years, this is the definitive overview of the senses through history. From antiquity to the present day, this major reference work covers themes such as religion, philosophy, science, medicine, literature, art and media. Each volume assesses the same key themes, meaning readers can gain a broad overview of each period, or follow a theme throughout history: 1. The Social Life of the Senses

An international team of authors explores the role of America in shaping particular forms of subculture; the significance of changes in legal codes; differing modes of queer consumption and displays of community; the difficult fit of queer (as opposed to gay and lesbian) politics in liberal democracies; the importance of mobility and immigration in modulating queer urban life; the challenge of AIDS; and the arrival of the internet.

2. Urban Sensations

By exploring the queer histories of cities from Istanbul to Helsinki and Moscow to Madrid, Queer Cities, Queer Cultures makes a significant contribution to our understanding of urban history, European history and the history of gender and sexuality.

AN INVALUABLE SOURCE FOR THE ORIGINAL STUDY OF CULTURAL AND SOCIAL HISTORY

CULTURAL & SOCIAL HISTORY E D I TO R S

Emma Griffin, University of East Anglia, UK, David Nash, Oxford Brookes University, UK Sarah Pearsall, Cambridge University, UK

“Cultural and Social History is essential for anyone who wants to follow the most recent debates on the sharpest of the cutting edges of history writing.” Lynn Hunt, University of California, Los Angeles, USA Cultural and Social History seeks to move the traditional discipline beyond the limits of both cultural and social history by emphasizing the ways in which the social and the cultural are inextricable. It makes connections across chronological and geographical boundaries within the discipline and links across neighbouring subjects which concern themselves with the history of culture. Cultural and Social History is the official publication of the Social History Society (SHS).
