Chris Bond PRECIOUS JEWELLERY FROM PLASTICS

jewellery, sculpture and textiles, to illustration, ceramics and fashion. So whether you’re a newcomer to the world of jewellery, would like to pursue a brand new hobby, or are an experienced practitioner looking to develop new skills, we have plenty of beautiful and practical books that will inspire and encourage you in your chosen discipline.

Precious Jewellery from Plastics

EXAMPLES OF ARTISTS

Bloomsbury Publishing produces titles that cover an array of different crafts, from

Through my work I aim to create jewellery that reflects my influences, inspiration and identity. Having grown up in a country with soaring levels of skill, developing traditional jewellery manufacturing skills did not excite me. The application of current technologies in contemporary crafts drew my attention and I resolved to use it as a tool to venture into uncharted territories. The unglamorous ubiquity of plastics and their availability in a range of colours allured me to explore their properties further. Colour is crucial to my design aesthetic, and I combine hand-dyed bright colours with fluorescent acrylic. My work explores the play of light with acrylic by virtue of its properties of edge lighting and transparency. I am inspired by the mystery that highly microscopic images exude; a sense of wonder of a parallel life veiled beneath perceived existence. I use these microscopic images from nature to create highly magnified digital patterns using CAD. I have used laser technology to push the boundaries of what was perceived to be possible. Thermoforming techniques assist me in creating simple yet clever forms in acrylic that act as the canvas for these elaborate patterns. The result is a magnificent symbiosis of colour, form, material and technology. Sheets of acrylic are rescued from landfill and recycled to create jewellery that incorporates clever nuances and architecture to deliver a visual product that is stunning by virtue of its theatrical scale and form.

Precious Jewellery from Plastics is a comprehensive guide to working with plastic for jewellers keen to experiment with the medium for the first time, or those with more experience who would like to expand their repertoire of skills.
