Interviews with Jacques Rancière, 19782014
The First Book of Foundations
Jacques Rancière, University of Paris VIII, France
Translated by Randolph Burks
Translated by Emiliano Battista This lively and thought-provoking collection of interviews with Jacques Rancière provides the reader with an incisive overview of his thought, from its beginnings during the Red Years in France to its most recent formulations. It supplements Rancière's scholarly and theoretical works with his reflections on the continuities, turns, ruptures and deviations in his thought. It does so in a conversational style replete with informative asides into current events and draws upon examples ranging from the history of the workers' struggle to literature, cinema and the arts - all of which we have learned to associate with Rancière. Michel Serres, Stanford University, USA "In this remarkable book Michel Serres doesn’t just retell the stories that lie at the foundation of Rome, but takes us back to the very idea of foundation as such. With Livy as his guide, Serres brilliantly traces the way the myth, legend, history, reality and representation of Rome open on to one another. The city itself is described as a multiplicity, as Serres explores the emergence of form in history, time, space, discourse, order, and life." - David Webb, Professor of Philosophy, Staffordshire University, UK Re-translated and introduced in this new edition, Rome is a contemporary classic. Philosophy and Simulation
Eyes
The Emergence of Synthetic Reason
Michel Serres, Stanford University, USA
Manuel DeLanda, University of Pennsylvania, USA
Translated by Anne-Marie Feenberg-Dibon
In this groundbreaking book, DeLanda presents a philosophical overview of contemporary investigations in physical, biological, and social sciences involving computer simulations. DeLanda analyzes different genres of simulation, from cellular automata and generic algorithms to neural nets and multi-agent systems, as a means to conceptualize the possibility spaces associated with casual capacities. Now available in paperback, this remarkably clear philosophical discussion of a burgeoning field, from an internationally renowned thinker, is a must-read for anyone interested in the philosophy of technology, the philosophy of science and the interface of science and the humanities. Dissenting Words
Eyes pioneers a radical philosophy that interrogates ways of seeing, thinking and knowing. In this experimental text, Michel Serres explores the capacities of eyes: how do we see? What is seeing, or being seen? Can we imagine the sight of nonhuman eyes, and how does this change our perception of the world and ourselves? Produced in full colour, this visually stunning work creatively interweaves the writing with the images themselves, resulting in a truly philosophical art book. In short poetic texts, Michel Serres invites us to enter rather than to leave Plato's cave. Philosophy for Non-philosophers Louis Althusser was a French Marxist philosopher Translated by G. M. Goshgarian
The Bloomsbury Anthology of Transcendental Thought Edited by David LaRocca, Cornell University, USA, and College at Cortland, SUNY, USA The Bloomsbury Anthology of Transcendental Thought is the definitive collection of writings on the nature and limits of human knowledge by philosophers, theologians, and writers from Plato to Zizek. Arranged chronologically, this anthology, the first of its kind, offers teachers and students a new viewpoint on the history and present of transcendental thought. Its selection of essential, engaging excerpts, carefully selected, edited, and introduced, brings course materials up to date with the state of the discipline. In 1980, at the end of the most intensely political period of his work and life, Louis Althusser penned Philosophy for Non-philosophers. Available here for the first time in English, Philosophy for Nonphilosophers constitutes a rigorous and engaged attempt to address a public unfamiliar with Althusser’s project. As such, the work is a concentration of the most fundamental theses of Althusser’s own ideas, and presents a synthesis of his sprawling and disparate philosophical and political writings. Nowhere else does Althusser push the distinction between philosophy and other disciplines as far, or develop in such detail the concept of ‘practice’. Libidinal Economy
The Sexual Politics of Meat
Jean-Francois Lyotard
A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory
Translated by Iain Hamilton Grant
Carol J. Adams, Activist and author
First published in 1974, Libidinal Economy is a major work of twentieth century continental philosophy. In it, Lyotard develops the idea of economies driven by libidinal ‘energies’ or ‘intensities’ which he claims flow through all structures, such as the human body and political or social events. He uses this idea to interpret a diverse range of subjects including political economy, Marxism, sexual politics, semiotics and psychoanalysis. Lyotard also carries out a broad critique of philosophies of desire, as expounded by Deleuze and Guattari, Nietzsche, Bataille, Foucault and de Sade. The Sexual Politics of Meat is Carol Adams’ inspiring and controversial exploration of the interplay between contemporary society’s ingrained cultural misogyny and its obsession with meat and masculinity. First published in 1990, the book has continued to change the lives of tens of thousands of readers into the second decade of the 21st century. Published in the year of the book's 25th anniversary, the Bloomsbury Revelations edition includes a substantial new afterword, including more than 20 new images and discussions of recent events that prove beyond doubt the continuing relevance of Adams' revolutionary book. First published in 1972, Dissemination contains three of Derrida's most central and seminal works: 'Plato's Pharmacy', 'The Double Session' and 'Dissemination'. Logic of Sense is one of Deleuze’s seminal works. First published in 1969, shortly after Difference and Repetition, it prefigures the hybrid style and methods he would use in his later writing with Felix Guattari. In an early review Michel Foucault wrote that Logic of Sense ‘should be read as the boldest and most insolent of metaphysical treatises’.
In Art and Fear, Virilio traces the twin development of art and science over the 20th century. In his provocative vision, art and science vie with each other for the destruction of the human form as we know it. This is a radical take on the state of art for a posthuman and post-historical world. In Art as Far as the Eye Can See Virilio considers the effects that the technological advances of the 20th century have had on art, aesthetics and politics and looks at the way in which these technologies alienate us from our physical environment. Understanding Music
René Girard
Roger Scruton
Translated by Stephen Bann and Michael Metteer
With Understanding Music and The Aesthetics of Music (1997) Roger Scruton set a new standard of rigour and seriousness in the philosophy of music. This collection of wide-ranging essays covers all aspects of the theory and practice of music, showing the significance of music as an expression of the moral life. The book is split into two parts; the first is devoted to the aesthetics and theory of music, and the second consists of critical studies of individual composers, thinkers and works including essays on Mozart, Wagner, Beethoven's Ninth, Janácek & Schoenberg, Szymanowski and Adorno.
Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World presents a highly original global theory of culture. Here, in his greatest work, René Girard explores the function of violence, mimetic desire and the mechanism of the scapegoat in the history of society and religion. Girard’s vision is a brilliant and devastating challenge to conventional views of literature, anthropology, philosophy and psychoanalysis. In the Light of the Accident
Edited by Mark Sinclair
Howard Caygill, Kingston University, UK
This reader makes the key writings of 19th-century French philosopher Félix Ravaisson available in English for the first time. In recent years, Ravaisson has emerged as an extremely important and influential figure in the history of continental philosophy. The full effects of his impact upon philosophy, theology, French studies, and particularly recently, art, are difficult to underestimate. The Félix Ravaisson Reader includes a glossary of key terms, a timeline of Ravaisson's life and ideas, introductions to each excerpt which contextualise the writing and an annotated bibliography of suggested reading. Conflicting Humanities Edited by Rosi Braidotti, Utrecht University, The Netherlands & Paul Gilroy, Kings College London, UK How might we reinvent the humanities? This is the question at the heart of this provocative volume. There is no better cast to confront and problematise this question than the contributors to Conflicting Humanities. They are world-renowned thinkers who can tackle the problem as researchers and teachers but also as prominent public intellectuals. Edward Said's definition of the core task of the Humanities as the pursuit of democratic criticism remains more urgent than ever, though it needs to be supplemented by gender, environmental, and antiracist perspectives as well as by detailed analysis of the necropolitical governmentality of our time. Kafka: In the Light of the Accident is a wonderfully unique philosophical interpretation of Kafka via the pivotal theme of the accident. Howard Caygill, author of the bestselling ‘On Resistance: A Philosophy of Defiance’ (Bloomsbury, 2012), reveals how Kafka’s reception was governed by a series of accidents: from the order of Max Brod’s posthumous publication of the novels and the correction of ‘misprints’, to many other posthumous editorial strategies. The focus on the accident casts light on the role of ‘media’ in Kafka’s work, particularly visual media and above all photography. The Lost Thread The Democracy of Modern Fiction Jacques Rancière Translated by Steven Corcoran In The Lost Thread, Rancière foregrounds the egalitarian and democratic impulses of modernist literature. Contrary to the canonical interpretation of the relation between modernism and capitalism via the commodification of everyday life, Ranciere proposes a radical rethinking of our received ideas regarding the politics of aesthetics in the modern era. In this work, Ranciere continues his project of outlining an egalitarian “distribution of the sensible” as the compelling linkage between politics and aesthetics in the modern age. Times of Crisis
Critical Thinking
What the Financial Crisis Revealed and How to Reinvent our Lives and Future
An Introduction to Reasoning Well
Michel Serres, Stanford University, USA Translated by Anne-Marie Feenberg-Dibon For Michel Serres, economic crises are earthquakes caused by societal tectonic plates. The 2007 financial crisis erupted because of the widening discrepancy between major social changes and institutions that have remained the same since WWII. At a time when the world population has grown so much that it is exhausting natural resources and the environment, we need to rethink cultural, social, and political dynamics. Times of Crisis calls for a new world, extoling the importance of science for our future and our political institutions. The Qur'an: A Philosophical Guide Oliver Leaman, University of Kentucky, USA Written with clarity and authority, this is the first philosophical introduction to the Qur'an. The guide begins by familiarizing readers with the core theories and controversies surrounding the text. Covering theoretical approaches and focusing on its style and language, Leaman introduces the Qur’an as an aesthetic object, discusses the influence of the Qur'an on politics, and covers its numerous interpreters. He then presents a close reading of the Qur'an as a whole, examining every form of philosophical interpretation verse by verse. Exploring the ways thinkers have sought to understand the text, Leaman demonstrates the value of interpreting the Qur'an philosophically. Bloomsbury Critical Introductions to Contemporary Metaphysics These comprehensive surveys of important metaphysical subjects or questions cover historical, methodological, and practical contexts, and explore major approaches, theories, debates, and changes to the ways the discipline is studied.
A Critical Introduction to Properties
A Critical Introduction to the Metaphysics of Modality
Sophie R. Allen, University of Oxford, UK
Andrea Borghini, College of the Holy Cross, USA
What do blue things have in common? Or electrons? Or planets? Distinct things appear to share properties; but what are properties and what is the best philosophical account of them? This critical introduction presents an engaging, up-to-date survey of metaphysical discussions about properties.
6
Examining the main contemporary theories of possibility behind modality, this is a comprehensive introduction to a central metaphysical topic.
Covering universals, tropes, sets and resemblance classes, it examines issues concerning the formulation and justification of property theories and gets to the heart of why a coherent theory of properties is so important.

A Critical Introduction to Scientific Realism Paul Dicken, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Germany Exploring the main topics of debate in scientific realism, this book allows epistemologists to make new connections with the philosophy of science. Moving from its origins in logical positivism to some of the most recent issues in the field, it covers the no-miracles argument, the pessimistic meta-induction, and structural realism. Dicken places arguments in historical context, and approaches scientific realism debate as a particular instance of our more general epistemological investigations. Portraits of Wittgenstein Edited by Ian Ground, Newcastle University, UK & F.A. Flowers III A major collection of memoirs and reflections on one of the most influential and yet elusive personalities in the history of modern philosophy Featuring a wealth of illuminating and profound insights into Wittgenstein's extraordinary life, this unique collection reveals Wittgenstein's character and power of personality more vividly and comprehensively than ever before. With portraits from more than seventy-five figures, Portraits of Wittgenstein brings together the personal recollections of philosophers, students, friends and acquaintances, including Bertrand Russell, G. E. Moore, F. R. Leavis, A. J. Ayer, Karl Popper, Friedrich von Hayek, G. H. von Wright, Rush Rhees, Freeman Dyson, G. E. M. Anscombe, Iris Murdoch, Mary Midgley and Mary Warnock. These authors testify to the life-long influence Wittgenstein had on the lives of those he met. Their fascinating memoirs, reflections and commentaries, often at odds with each other, reveal Wittgenstein's kindness, and how much genuine friendship meant to him, as well as his suffering and despair. They show too how the philosopher's ruthless honesty and uncompromising integrity often resulted in stern advice and harsh rebukes to friends and foes alike. Now revised and updated, Portraits of Wittgenstein includes new selections, revised contributions, photographs and maps that provide historical context to Wittgenstein's relationships with his intellectual and social circle. The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of the American Enlightenment Edited by Mark G. Spencer, Brock University, Canada The first reference work on this key subject in early American history With over 500 original essays, The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of American Enlightenment provides a comprehensive account to complement the intense scholarly activity that has recently centered on the European Enlightenment. With substantial and original essays on the major American Enlightenment figures, including Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush, Jonathan Edwards and many others, this wide-ranging collection also includes topical essays and entries on dozens of often-overlooked secondary figures. It has long been known that Americans made their own contributions to the Enlightenment, most notably by putting Enlightenment ideas to work in defining the American Revolution, the United States Constitution, and the nature of the early American Republic. These volumes show that the American Enlightenment was more far reaching than even that story assumes. Presenting a fresh definition of the Enlightenment in America, this remarkable work confirms that the American Enlightenment constitutes the central framework for understanding the development of American history between the 18th and 19th centuries. Beckett's Words The Promise of Happiness in a Time of Mourning David Kleinberg-Levin, Northwestern University, USA "To link Samuel Beckett and happiness in the same sentence without an intervening 'not' is tantamount to heresy, the call of an apostate; yet the received wisdom of Beckett Studies is ripe for challenge, and Kleinberg-Levin obliges. Phenomenology and Virtue Ethics Inheriting Walter Benjamin Gerhard Richter, Brown University, USA Gerhard Richter examines, in the work of Walter Benjamin, one of the central problems of modernity: the question of how to receive an intellectual inheritance. Covering aspects of Benjamin’s complex relationship to the legacies of such writers as Kant, Nietzsche, Kafka, Heidegger, and Derrida, each chapter attends to a key concern in Benjamin’s writing, while reflecting on the challenges that this issue presents for the question of inheritability and transmissibility. Both reading Benjamin and watching himself reading Benjamin, Richter participates in the act of inheriting while also inquiring into the conditions of possibility for inheriting Benjamin’s corpus today. The Allure of Things: Process and Object in Contemporary Philosophy Edited by Roland Faber, Claremont University, USA & Andrew Goffey, Middlesex University, UK The Allure of Things: Process and Object in Contemporary Philosophy contests the view that metaphysics is something to be overcome. By focusing on process and object-oriented ontology (OOO) and rejecting the privileging of human existence over the existence of non-human objects, this collection explores philosophy's concern with things themselves. This new collection consequently proposes a pragmatic and pluralist approach to 'modes of existence'. Drawing together an international range of leading scholars, The Allure of Things fully covers the similarities between OOO and process philosophy, and is an essential addition to the literature on metaphysics. Michel Meyer's Problematology Questioning and Society Nick Turnbull, University of Manchester, UK In this first-ever extended study of Michel Meyer’s work, Turnbull examines his ‘problematology’, comparing Meyer’s ideas and praxis with the thought of other major theorists, including Bourdieu, Castoriadis, Collingwood, Derrida, Dewey, Gadamer, Heidegger and Lyotard. "For Meyer, questioning is fundamental to philosophy, to human creativity and to the organization of society in general. Turnbull’s elegant and lucid exploration illuminates the critical power of Meyer’s ‘problematology’ both as a paradigm of thought and as a tool of social inquiry. The Poetic Imagination in Heidegger and Schelling
Nietzsche's Therapeutic Teaching
Christopher Yates, Grove City College, USA
Edited by Horst Hutter & Eli Friedland, both at Concordia University, Canada
The imagination is a decisive, if underappreciated, theme in German thought since Kant. This rigorous historical and textual analysis challenges an oversight of traditional readings by presenting the first comparative study of F.W.J. Schelling and Martin Heidegger on this theme. Tracing the theme of imagination in new readings of these major thinkers, Yates’ study not only acknowledges Schelling’s provocative place in post-Kantian German Idealism, but demonstrates as well the significance of Schelling’s philosophical focus and style for Heidegger’s own concentration on the creative vocation of human artistry and thought. Towards the Critique of Violence Walter Benjamin and Giorgio Agamben Edited by Brendan Moran, University of Calgary, Canada & Carlo Salzani, Monash University, Australia "The articles in this volume take up the challenge of rereading Benjamin after Agamben, and do so with the utmost seriousness, erudition, argumentativeness and incisiveness. Clarifying without simplifying, and extending without falsification, this collection will be indispensable not only for students and scholars of Benjamin and Agamben, but for its critical discussions concerning the relations between myth, law, violence and justice." - Justin Clemens, Senior Lecturer in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne, Australia UK August 2015 • US August 2015 • 272 pages PB 9781474241892 • £21.99 / $37.95 • HB 9781472523242 • £65.00 / $112.00 Individual eBook 9781472533494 • £21.99 / $32.99 Library eBook 9781472529282 Series: Bloomsbury Studies in Continental Philosophy • Bloomsbury Academic
Desire in Ashes Deconstruction, Psychoanalysis, Philosophy Edited by Simon Morgan Wortham & Chiara Alfano This collection considers: how best to recall deconstruction? Rather than reduce it to an object of historical importance or memory, these essays analyze its significance in terms of complex matrices of desire; provoked in this way, deconstruction cannot be dismissed as 'dead', nor unproblematically defended as alive and well. Repositioned on the threshold of life-death, deconstruction profoundly complicates the field of critical thought which still struggles to memorialize, inter, or reduce the deconstructive corpus to ashes. The theme of the philosopher as therapist dominates Nietzsche's entire opus. This collection of essays by leading scholars identifies three principal approaches in Nietzsche's philosophy: diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic. "Nietzsche’s Therapeutic Teaching brings needed attention to the centrality of the classical theme of philosophy as medicine for the soul to Nietzsche’s project and its implications for Nietzsche’s philosophical practice. Why There Is No Poststructuralism in France The Making of an Intellectual Generation Johannes Angermuller, University of Warwick, UK French thinkers such as Foucault and Derrida are often labelled as representatives of ‘poststructuralism’ in the Anglophone world. However, in France, they use no such category or description; this group of theorists – ‘the postructuralists’ - were never perceived as a coherent intellectual group or movement. By tracing the evolution of the French intellectual field after the war, this book places theory in the social and historical contexts of its reception and accounts for a particularly productive moment in French intellectual life which continues to inform the theoretical imaginary of our time. Space After Deleuze
A Dialectical Study
Arun Saldanha, University of Minnesota, USA
Christopher Lauer, University of Hawai`i, USA In this important contribution to the burgeoning field of the ethics of recognition, Lauer examines the contradictions inherent in the concept of intimacy. Analyzing ten major ways that we aim to establish intimacy with one another, including gift-giving, touching, and fetishes, this book, rather than contenting itself with a deconstructive approach, proposes to treat intimacy dialectically. Far from a pessimistic diagnosis of the human condition, this is a meditation on how to live intimately in a world in which intimacy is impossible, demonstrating that intimacy is central to how we understand ourselves and our relations to others. French Philosophy Today Critical Introductions Knox Peden, University of Queensland, Australia
Deleuze’s fondness for geography has long been recognized as central to his thought. This is the first book to introduce researchers and students to the breadth of Deleuze’s engagements with space, place and movement. Focusing on pressing global issues such as urbanization, war, migration, and climate change, this systematic overview of moments in Deleuze’s corpus where space is implicitly or explicitly theorized shows why he can be called the 20th century's most interesting thinker of space. Saldanha presents a robust and politically engaged framework for studying spatial phenomena ideal for to anyone with an interest in refining such concepts as territory, assemblage, body, event and Anthropocene. Deleuze and Becoming(s) Samantha Bankston, Sierra Nevada College, USA
French Philosophy Today introduces the dominant strands of contemporary French philosophy in the wake of post-structuralism. The book covers all the major thinkers, including Jean-Luc Nancy, Michel Henry, Jean-Luc Marion, Bernard Stiegler, François Laruelle, Alain Badiou, Etienne Balibar, Jacques Rancière, and Quentin Meillassoux, and introduces their major contributions to the development of modern European thought.
Deleuze’s concept of ‘becoming’ provides the key to his notoriously complex metaphysics, yet he never systematized it. Bankston tracks both the concept across Deleuze’s writings and its underlying ontological and temporal processes, arguing that expressions of becoming(s) appear in one of two temporal registers: an appropriation of Nietzsche’s concept of eternal return (the becoming of the event), and Bergsonian duration (the becoming of sensation).
This book provides students with a useful framework for further exploring the key themes and figures in French philosophy today with an eye for what is innovative about them and how they connect with longstanding French philosophical traditions.
Overturning the criticisms launched by Žižek and Badiou, with conceptual encounters between Bergson, Nietzsche, Leibniz, Borges, Klossowski, and Proust, the newly charted concept of double becoming provides a roadmap to the totality of Deleuze’s philosophy.

The Philosophy of Science Fiction Henri Bergson and the Fabulations of Philip K. Dick James Burton, Institute for Cultural Inquiry, Berlin, Germany "In a brilliant act of superimposition, Burton brings Henri Bergson’s evolutionary mysticism to bear on the divine invasions—in fiction and in life—of writer Philip K. Dick. The vision of 'immanent soteriology' that emerges, in which transcendent fictions jam the engines of necessity, not only illuminates the method behind Dick’s madness but reveals the crucial emancipatory role that fabulation can and does play within posthuman thought. With clear thinking and graceful writing, Burton boldly indicates a 'perturbation in the reality field' of contemporary materialism." - Erik Davis, author of Techgnosis: Myth, Magic and Mysticism in the Age of Information UK September 2015 • US September 2015 • 248 pages • 5 bw illus HB 9781474227667 • £65.00 / $112.00 Individual eBook 9781474227681 • £64.99 / $100.99 Library eBook 9781474227674 Bloomsbury Academic

Intimacy
Towards an Epistemology of Ruptures The Case of Heidegger and Foucault Arun Iyer, Seattle University, USA "Epistemology as traditionally conceived seeks to determine the nature of knowledge and justification. Its point of departure is Plato's critique of the relativism of Protagoras, who according to Plato erred by accepting Heraclitus' construal of being as becoming. Truth, knowledge, and justification must be grounded in timeless entities of some sort. Arun Iyer shows how Heidegger and Foucault reverse this Platonic argument. For them, truth, knowledge, and justification are irreducibly historical. Iyer's elaboration of their views is subtle, original, and thoughtprovoking." - Andrew Cutrofello, Professor of Philosophy, Loyola University Chicago, USA UK July 2015 • US July 2015 • 232 pages PB 9781474242004 • £21.99 / $37.95 Previously published in HB 9781441137678 Individual eBook 9781441164056 • £21.99 / $32.99 Library eBook 9781441135841 Bloomsbury Academic

Merleau-Ponty's Existential Phenomenology and the Realization of Philosophy Bryan A. Smyth, University of Mississippi, USA "By bringing Merleau-Ponty’s reading of Marx's concept of history and Saint Exupéry's account of the heroic act together with Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological project, Bryan Smyth has brilliantly and possibly forever altered our way of thinking about Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy. Nearly everything that we understood in Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception - the nature of pre-objective experience and intersubjectivity, the role of the tacit cogito in the phenomenology of phenomenology, the living subject as producer, the meaning of freedom - is radically reconfigured, leaving the reader breathlessly turning the pages into new world." - Dorothea Olkowski, Professor of Philosophy, University of Colorado, USA UK June 2015 • US June 2015 • 240 pages PB 9781474242110 • £19.99 / $29.95 Previously published in HB 9781780937052 Individual eBook 9781780937878 • £19.99 / $27.99 Library eBook 9781780937861 Bloomsbury Academic
The Accursed Book Essays on Georges Bataille Edited by Will Stronge, University of the West of England, UK Georges Bataille’s influence upon 20th century philosophy is hard to overstate. His work is a unique and enigmatic combination of political theory, philosophy, anthropology and economic theory. This is the first book to take his ambitious Accursed Share project, comprising of three volumes, as its guiding focus. As well as providing readings of Bataille’s key concepts (e.g. animality, sovereignty, dialectics, the sacred), this collection aims to explore new terrain and new theoretical problems. Philosophy in a Meaningless Life A System of Nihilism, Consciousness and Reality James Tartaglia, Keele University, UK Presenting philosophical enquiry as a function of the meaning of life, Philosophy in a Meaningless Life goes beyond traditional metaphysical problems and connects doing philosophy to the meaninglessness of life. Illustrating the naturalness of the question of the meaning of life through the Epic of Gilgamesh, it looks at the various ways philosophers have tried to avoid the conclusion that life is meaningless. Through discussions of thinkers who believe nihilism renders life absurd, to those who try to avoid nihilism by substituting a humanistic conception of meaning, it provides original readings of consciousness, time and universals. Bertrand Russell's Bundle Theory of Particulars
Humanism and Embodiment
Gülberk Koç Maclean, Mount Royal University, Canada
Susan E. Babbitt, Queen's University, Kingston, Canada
Through its original focus on Russell's little known metaphysics in the later part of his career, this study explains why Russell's theory of particulars is relevant today. It argues that a Russellian realist bundle theory is indeed the best explanation of similarities and differences that we observe around us, thanks to the ontological economy such a theory provides and its strength and completeness as a theory of the nature of reality. Tackling the major criticisms levelled against the realist bundle theory, it presents and defends a tenable Russellian bundle theory which can answer the objections. Pragmatist Neurophilosophy: American Philosophy and the Brain Edited by John R. Shook, University at Buffalo, USA & Tibor Solymosi, Allegheny College, USA
A live issue in anthropology and development studies, humanism is not typically addressed by analytic philosophers. Arguing for humanism as a view about truths, Humanism and Embodiment insists that disembodied reason, not religion, should be the target of secularists promoting freedom of enquiry and human community. Babbitt’s original study presents humanism as a meta-ethical view, paralleling naturalistic realism in recent analytic epistemology and philosophy of science. Drawing on philosophical sources such as Marxism, Buddhism and Christianity, this original study considers implications of an embodied conception of reason, revealing philosophical, practical and political implications. The Cultural Promise of the Aesthetic Monique Roelofs, Hampshire College, USA Aesthetic desire and distaste prime everyday life in surprising ways. The Cultural Promise of the Aesthetic casts much-needed light on the complex mix of meanings our aesthetic activities weave into cultural existence.
This volume explores topics of urgent interest across neuroscience and philosophy from the perspective of pragmatism. The essays explain why scientists today should participate in pragmatic judgments and how current scientists can benefit from earlier philosophical explorations across the same territory. Looking at recent neuroscientific discoveries in relation to classical pragmatists, this book explores emerging pragmatic views supported directly from the behavioral and brain sciences and describes how 'neuropragmatism' engages larger cultural questions by adequately dealing with meaningful values and ethical ideals.
Anchoring aesthetic experience in our relationships with persons, places, and things, Monique Roelofs explores aesthetic life as a multimodal, socially embedded, corporeal endeavor. Highlighting notions of relationality, address, and promising, this compelling study shows these concepts at work in visions of beauty, ugliness, detail, nation, ignorance, and cultural boundary.

Edited by Owen Hulatt, University of York, UK Whether art can be wholly autonomous has been repeatedly challenged in the modern history of aesthetics. Covering examples from Philosophy, Music and Art History and drawing on continental and analytic sources, this volume clarifies the relationship between artworks and extra-aesthetic considerations, including historic, cultural or economic factors. By closely examining how the creation of artworks, and our judgements of these artworks, relate to society and history, Aesthetic and Artistic Autonomy provides an insightful and sustained discussion of a major question in aesthetic philosophy. Aesthetic and Artistic Autonomy
"It is no exaggeration to say that Edward Casey is an extraordinary philosopher. And this book, consisting of an excellent introduction surveying the entirety of Casey’s work, a deeply probing interview, and thoughtful essays on Casey’s philosophical contributions by colleagues and former students, is much more than testimony to Casey’s influence. Exploring the remarkable range of his thought as the most creative, most exciting, most provocative inheritor of Husserlian phenomenology, the contributions to this volume take the reader on an unforgettable journey." - David Kleinberg-Levin, Northwestern University, USA UK February 2015 • US February 2015 • 256 pages • 15 halftone illus PB 9781474222945 • £21.99 / $37.95 Previously published in HB 9781441122216 Individual eBook 9781441181954 • £21.99 / $32.99 Library eBook 9781441156594 Series: Bloomsbury Studies in American Philosophy • Bloomsbury Academic
Excursions in Hyper-Dialectic Rajiv Kaushik, Brock University, Canada Art, Language and Figure in Merleau-Ponty considers Merleau-Ponty’s later ontology of language in the light of his “figured philosophy,” which places the work of art at the centre of its investigation. Kaushik argues that, since for Merleau-Ponty the work of art actualizes a sensible ontology that would otherwise be invisible to the history of dialectics, it undermines the fundamental difference between being and linguistic structures. Following the artists most important to Merleau-Ponty’s own writings on art and extending these analyses to more recent 21st-century artists, Kaushik takes an excursion into the places where art and language are interlaced in Merleau-Ponty’s last ontology. The Intelligence of Place Topographies and Poetics Edited by Jeff Malpas, University of Tasmania, Australia Place has become a widespread concept in contemporary work in the humanities. Yet there are relatively few works that focus directly on the concept of place; it remains a concept more often deployed than interrogated. This study fills this gap, drawing together many of the key thinkers currently writing on the topic in topics including anthropology, architecture, geography and philosophy. Providing an exploration of place from various perspectives, it offers a unique point of entry into the contemporary thinking of place and new insights into a concept crucial to understanding our world and ourselves. The Art of Gerhard Richter Hermeneutics, Images, Meaning Christian Lotz, Michigan State University, USA The first philosophical investigation of arguably one of the most important painters working today, Gerhard Richter, this volume uncovers key philosophical aspects of Richter’s work. Discussing the problem of how Richter’s paintings represent and generate meaning, the dialectic of seeing and blindness, death and time and the role of nature in Richter’s paintings, Christian Lotz builds upon Gadamer’s notion of ‘formed images' and outlines the first elements of a hermeneutics and phenomenology of images. By relying upon a hermeneutical and phenomenological approach, rather than working from abstract theory, it provides new insights to writings on the philosophy of painting. The Feminist Uncanny in Theory and Art Practice Alexandra M. Kokoli, Middlesex University, UK Through discussions of the influence of theories and practices on contemporary art, Alexandra Kokoli proposes a new concept, the feminist uncanny, exploring it as one of the most enduring legacies of the Women's Liberation Movement. Introducing the multiple definitions of the uncanny, Kokoli provides an accessible literature review of key texts by Lacan and Royle, alongside feminist critiques by Cixous and Kofman. She examines the links between the feminine and the uncanny, first signposted by Freud, and reflects on how feminist theory and practice exploited such links. Groove
Beauty and the End of Art
A Phenomenology of Rhythmic Nuance
Wittgenstein, Plurality and Perception
Tiger C. Roholt, Montclair State University, USA
Sonia Sedivy, University of Toronto Scarborough, Canada
A groove is commonly understood as the feel of a rhythm. While this points in the right direction, it is notoriously vague. In this innovative work, Tiger C. Roholt argues that grooves are not graspable through the intellect nor through mere listening. By invoking the French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty's notion of 'motor intentionality,' Roholt shows that the 'feel' of a groove, and the understanding of it, are two sides of a coin: to 'get' a groove just is to comprehend it bodily and to feel that embodied comprehension. Written by an experienced drummer and philosopher, Groove is a vivid and exciting study of one of music's most central and relatively unexplored aspects. Sonia Sedivy shows how a resurgence of interest in beauty and a sense of ending in Western art are challenging us to rethink art, beauty and their relationship. Arguing that Wittgenstein’s later work and contemporary theory of perception offer just what we need for a unified approach to art and beauty, Sedivy provides new answers to these new challenges. Examining contemporary debates about art, aesthetics and perception, she weaves together insights from Kant, Gadamer and Danto, Nehamas, Scarry and Hickey to reveal how they make good sense if we bring contemporary theory of perception and Wittgensteinian realism into the conversation. The Baroque from Philosophy to Architecture
Traversals of Affect
Deleuze, Lacan and Badiou
On Jean-François Lyotard
Nadir Lahiji, University of Canberra, Australia
Edited by Claire Nouvet, Emory University, USA, Julie Gaillard, Emory University, USA & Mark Stoholski, Emory University, USA
Analysing the reception of contemporary French philosophy in architecture, Nadir Lahiji discusses the problematic nature of importing philosophical categories into architecture. Focusing on the notion of the Baroque in Deleuze and Lacan’s investigations of the concept, Lahiji challenges the contemporary dominance of the Baroque as a phenomenon related to postmodernism, establishing it as a name for the paradoxical unity of ‘kitsch’ and ‘high’ art. This original critique expands on the misadventure of architecture with French Philosophy and explains why the category of the Baroque, if it is still useful in architecture criticism, must be tied to the notion of Post-Rationalism. Catholic Theology for an Unfinished Universe
Kierkegaard After Frankfurt
John F. Haught, Georgetown University, USA "A brilliant theological analysis of what the Catholic faith means in an age of evolution. An intellectually adventurous, most inspiring work. Deeply influenced by Teilhard de Chardin, Lonergan, Rahner, and other modern theologians and philosophers, Haught’s thought challenges its readers in every fibre of their being to think afresh about the much misunderstood relationship between religion and evolution. I cannot recommend this book too highly—it is a model of clarity, strength of argument, original thinking, and a most persuasive summons to re-examine our life and thought in the light of evolutionary becoming." - Ursula King, Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Bristol, UK UK September 2015 • US September 2015 • 232 pages PB 9781501306211 • £19.99 / $29.95 • HB 9781501306228 • £74.00 / $120.00 Individual eBook 9781501306235 • £14.99 / $25.99 Library eBook 9781501306242 Bloomsbury Academic

Edited by Anthony Rudd, St. Olaf College, USA & John Davenport, Fordham University, USA Love, Reason, and Will investigates themes common to Harry G. Frankfurt and Søren Kierkegaard, focusing particularly on their understanding of love. Distinguished contributors argue that Kierkegaard's insights about love, volition, and identity help us evaluate aspects of Frankfurt's well-known arguments about love and caring; similarly, Frankfurt's analyses of the higher-order will, valuing, and self-love clarify themes in Kierkegaard's Works of Love and other books. By bringing these key thinkers into conversation, we may glean a new understanding of the structure of love and reasons for love, and, more broadly, the central ethical questions of 'how to live' and to develop an authentic identity and meaningful life.

The Iconic Imagination Douglas Hedley, University of Cambridge, UK Why is beauty consoling? Ancient and Medieval Western philosophy was primarily concerned with beauty in relation to truth and goodness. The theistic religions assume a link between beauty, goodness and truth, all of which are viewed as divine attributes. The Iconic Imagination is both a reflection on the redemptive potential of art, and an investigation of the traditions of occidental Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam in their confrontations with the particular power of art to represent the transcendent. Throughout, Hedley argues that the malaise of much contemporary reflection upon beauty is a consequence of the marginalisation of beauty's religious dimension. Idealism and Christian Philosophy Idealism and Christianity Volume 2 Edited by James S. Spiegel, Taylor University in Indiana, USA & Steven B. Idealism and Christianity Volume 1 Edited by S. Mark Hamilton, University of Bristol, UK, Joshua Farris, University of Bristol, UK & James S. Spiegel, Taylor University in Indiana, USA In the recent history of philosophy few works have appeared which favorably portray Idealism as a plausible philosophical view of the world. Considerably less has been written about Idealism as a viable framework for doing theology. Idealism and Christian Theology is an effort to re-introduce Idealism to contemporary Christian theology, and to retrieve ideas and arguments from its most significant modern exponents (especially George Berkeley and Jonathan Edwards) in order to assess its value for present and future theological construction. A Mystical Philosophy Transcendence and Immanence in the Works of Virginia Woolf and Iris Murdoch Donna J. Lazenby, University of Cambridge, UK Revealing, in an original and provocative study, the mystical contents of the works of famous atheists Virginia Woolf and Iris Murdoch, Donna Lazenby shows how these thinkers' refusal to construe worldviews on available reductive models brought them to offer radically alternative pictures of life which maintain its mysteriousness, and promote a mystical way of knowing. A Mystical Philosophy contributes to the contemporary resurgence of interest in Spirituality, but from an entirely new direction. Rethinking Order After the Laws of Nature Edited by Nancy Cartwright, University of Durham, UK & Keith Ward, Heythrop College, UK This book presents a new picture of natural order. The Newtonian picture of a cosmos ruled by universal and exceptionless laws has been superseded; we need to rethink the classical idea of the ‘laws of nature’ in a more dynamic and creatively diverse way. In each chapter expert authors expound the historical context of the idea of laws of nature, and explore the diverse sorts of order presupposed by work in the sciences. They consider how human freedom might be understood, and explore how Newton’s idea of a ‘universal designer’ might be revised, in this new context. Genealogies of Speculation
Reading Richard Rorty and Stanley Cavell
Materialism and Subjectivity since Structuralism
Áine Mahon, The New School for Social Research, USA A comparative study of two hugely influential contemporary American philosophers, Richard Rorty and Stanley Cavell, The Ironist and the Romantic finds Rorty's cheerful pragmatism strikingly at odds with the anxious romanticism of Cavell. Beginning from this tonal discord, and moving through comprehensive comparative analysis on the topics of scepticism, American philosophy, literature, writing style and politics, this book presents the work of its central figures in a novel and mutually illuminating perspective. Edited by Suhail Malik, Goldsmiths, UK & Armen Avanessian, Free University Berlin, Germany This book looks to break the impasse between the innovations of speculative thought in comprehending our encounter with reality and the dominant strands of 20th-century anti-foundationalist philosophy, emphasizing subjectivity as a condition for all experience and knowledge, explicitly identifying continuities and debts between them. Challenging emerging paradigms of philosophical history, this text re-evaluates different theoretical and political traditions, such as feminism, literary theory, Marxism, art history, and film studies, after the speculative turn in philosophy. The Ironist and the Romantic
Benjamin Spagnolo This book combines analysis of two of the most developed theories of legal systems, those of Hans Kelsen and Joseph Raz, with an evaluation of their capacity to explain the facts and normative standards for which they purport to account. That evaluation is undertaken by reference to Australian constitutional law and history, whose diverse and complex phenomena make it particularly apt for evaluating the theories’ explanatory power. It also presents the case for re-conceptualizing the role of Imperial laws and institutions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and clarifies the interrelationship between Colonial, State, Commonwealth and Imperial legal systems. Olli Lagerspetz, Åbo Academy, Finland

From questions of social cohesion, normative and virtue ethics, to epistemology, psychology, and the philosophy of emotions, there is a diverse variety of approaches to the concept of trust in philosophy. Olli Lagerspetz breathes new life into philosophical debates on trust, showing how questions about trust are at the centre of any in-depth analyses of the nature of human agency and human rationality and that these issues lie at the heart of philosophical ethics. Leadership and Ethics
Dewey and the Ancients
Edited by Jacqueline Boaks & Michael P. Levine, both of University of Western Australia, Australia
Essays on Hellenic and Hellenistic Themes in the Philosophy of John Dewey
What constitutes a good leader? Are ethics and leadership even compatible? Accounts of leadership often lie at either end of an ethical spectrum: one end argues ethics are intrinsically linked to leadership; on the other are (Machiavellian) views that deny any such link—intrinsic or extrinsic. Leadership appears to require a normative component of virtue; otherwise ‘leadership’ amounts to no more than mere power or influence. But are such accounts coherent and justifiable? Approaching a controversial topic, this text tackles key questions from a range of philosophical perspectives, considering the nature of leadership and how it shapes the world. Edited by Christopher C. Kirby, Eastern Washington University, USA Until now, there has been little consideration of the influence of Greek thought on this key American philosopher. Examining Dewey's treatment and appropriation of Greek thought, the authors reveal an otherwise largely overlooked facet of his intellectual development, offering perspectives on Dewey's view of the aims and purpose of philosophy. "A beautifully conceived and articulated collection of essays that illuminates a long neglected facet of John Dewey's philosophy. Their insights enlarge our understanding of Dewey's - and our own - enormous debt to the thinkers who invented Western philosophy." - Larry A. The Poverty of Eros in Plato’s Symposium
Edited by Anthony K. Jensen, Humboldt Universität Berlin, Germany & Helmut Heit, Technische Universität
Lorelle D. Lamascus, St. Mary’s University, USA
"While it has not been forgotten that Nietzsche was a scholar and philologist before he was a philosopher, his work in those areas has been largely ignored. Nietzsche as a Scholar of Antiquity seeks to correct this defect by exploring [the] impact of Nietzsche's academic work both on his philosophy and on the discipline of philology. Overall, this volume is an excellent addition to the corpus of Nietzsche scholarship, and one that will be of interest to Classical scholars as well. Highly recommended." - Coyle Neal, Southwest Baptist University, Bryn Mawr Classical Review UK July 2015 • US July 2015 • 320 pages PB 9781474242011 • £21.99 / $37.95 Previously published in HB 9781472511522 Individual eBook 9781472514080 • £21.99 / $32.99 Library eBook 9781472513335 Bloomsbury Academic
Offering an innovative new approach towards Eros and the concept of eros in the Symposium, Lamascus argues that Plato's depiction of Eros as the child of Poverty (penia) and Resource (poros) is central to understanding the nature of love. The book shows that poverty provides an appropriate directing of eros towards eternal and unchanging goods (and away from an age geared towards material items and wealth), and thus that Plato’s mythical treatment of Eros in the Symposium lays the groundwork for understanding the soul’s embrace of poverty as a way of living, loving, and knowing. The Idea of Photography Theresa Mikuriya, University of West London, UK When was photography invented? In 1826 with the first permanent photograph? If we depart from the technologically oriented accounts and consider photography as a philosophical discourse an alternative history appears, one which examines the human impulse to reconstruct the photogogic or “the evoking of light”. The significance of the photagogic throughout the history of ideas is explored via the Platonic Dialogues, Iamblichus’ theurgic writings, Marsilio Ficino’s texts and the works of Renaissance magus John Dee. This alternative history is not a replacement of other narratives of photographic history but rather offers a way of rethinking photography’s ontological instability. Existentialism and Excess: The Life and Times of Jean-Paul Sartre
42 Fantastic Quotes That Define Philosophy Gary Cox, University of Birmingham, UK
Gary Cox, University of Birmingham, UK
As Douglas Adams points out, if there is no final answer to the question 'What is the meaning of life?', '42' is as good or bad an answer as any other. Indeed, 42 quotes might be even better! Quoting everyone from Douglas Adams to A.J. Ayer and Thomas Aquinas to Karl Marx, Gary Cox guides us through 42 of the most misunderstood, misquoted, provocative and significant quotes in the history of philosophy, providing a witty and compelling commentary along the way. Jean-Paul Sartre is one of the undisputed giants of twentieth-century philosophy. His tumultuous personal life - so inextricably bound up with his philosophical thinking - is a fascinating tale of love, lust, drug abuse, high profile fallings out and political rebellion. This meticulously researched biography is fast-paced, entertaining, often amusing and sometimes deeply moving. Existentialism and Excess covers Sartre's remarkable seventy-five-year life from his early precocious years, through his time as a brilliant student in Paris, his wilderness years as a provincial teacher, his World War II adventures, and his decline into blindness and old age. Roger Scruton How to be a conservative
Fools, Frauds and Firebrands
Roger Scruton
Thinkers of the New Left
In this highly personal and witty book, renowned philosopher Roger Scruton explains how to live as a conservative in spite of the pressures to exist otherwise. Drawing on his own vast experience as a counter-cultural presence in public life, Scruton argues that while humanity might survive in the absence of the conservative outlook, it certainly won`t flourish. How to be a conservative is a heartfelt appeal on behalf of those traditional values which are the bedrock of what remains of our shattered civilization. Roger Scruton In Fools, Frauds and Firebrands: Thinkers of the New Left, Roger Scruton explores the intellectual roots and political effect of the radical arguments that arose during the 60s and 70s, and which have – after a period of doubt – now returned with a vengeance. From Eric Hobsbawm and Ralph Miliband to Alain Badiou and Slavoj Žižek, the vision of an egalitarian utopia has occupied a central place in the discussion of history, politics and culture throughout the West. What explains the persistence of the Utopian illusion? And how do we replace it with a realistic vision that is not merely a form of pessimism? Conversations with Roger Scruton Mark Dooley & Roger Scruton This book reveals what life was like for Roger Scruton growing up in High Wycombe, how he survived Cambridge and how he came to hold his conservative outlook. It tells of Scruton’s rise to prominence while writing for The Times and sheds light on his campaign on behalf of underground dissidents in Eastern Europe. Ranging across topics as diverse as the current state of British philosophy, music, religion, and illuminating what lay behind Scruton’s abandonment of academia for his new life on a Wiltshire farm, Conversations with Roger Scruton is an intimate portrait of a writer who has felt philosophy as a vocation and whose defence of unfashionable causes has brought him a wide readership in Britain and around the world. Wittgenstein has had perhaps more influence on post-war philosophical investigation than any other. In Ludwig Wittgenstein, Miles Hollingworth continues to pioneer a new kind of biographical writing; here the ingredients are the hypersensitivities of Viennese society in the last part of the nineteenth century, Carnegie-like wealth, Wittgenstein’s mother’s tightrope between hysteria and sentimentality, his brothers’ suicides – all compounded with the academic disciplines of mathematical, linguistic and historical philosophy. In this compelling life, Hollingworth argues that Wittgenstein subsumed all to the nature of what he felt was his own destiny – an inborn genius whose narrative he increasingly fought to control. The Psychology of Conflict
Medialogies
Mediating in a Diverse World
Inflationary Media and the Crisis of Reality
Paul Randolph In The Psychology of Conflict, Paul Randolph examines the application of existential philosophy to the psychology of mediation.
David R. Castillo, State University of New York at Buffalo, USA & William Egginton, Johns Hopkins University, USA Medialogies offers a highly innovative approach to the contemporary construction of reality in cultural, political, and economic domains. Egginton and Castillo, both luminary scholars, combine an accessible style with profound theoretical analysis, engaging with works of philosophy and political theory, as well as novels, films, and mass media phenomena. The book invites us to reconsider the way reality is constructed, and how truth, sovereignty, agency, and authority are understood from the everyday, philosophical, and political points of view. A powerful analysis of actuality, with its roots in early modernity, this work is crucial to understanding reality in the information age. Philosophy of Sport
Through an outline of the shared human characteristics (‘existential givens’) as depicted by prominent Existentialists, he shows how conflict resolvers from a variety of professions can benefit from a deeper knowledge of human behaviour in conflict. This practical guide will assist those interested in conflict resolution to better understand the psychological processes of parties in conflict and mediation. As Randolph argues, psychology is seen as an increasingly vital tool for resolving conflicts, in politics, peace negotiations, divorce, employment, and the commercial sector. Existence and Consolation Reinventing Ontology, Gnosis, and Values in African Philosophy Ada Agada
Klaus Ottmann This book is not an attempt at explaining or predicting genius, nor is its goal to construct a concept or the concept of genius. Rather, it is a horizon of conceptual events that constitute a philosophy of desire within the ethical-aesthetical writings of seven of Western philosophy's most influential thinkers: Spinoza, Schelling, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Peirce, Wittgenstein, and Heidegger. This postmodern reevaluation of genius suggests that while there is no essentialist quality of genius, the postmodern artist can reach the Extraordinary by way of an active-passive Genius Decision, which is engaged in an activity of failure in its desire to represent the Nonrepresentable. Edited by Jonathan O. Chimakonam This groundbreaking book in African philosophy goes beyond the post-colonial enthno-philosophies and describes a genuine philosophy grounded in the African experience that illuminates the universal quest for happiness, meaning, and knowledge. Consolation philosophy is meant as the culmination of loose developments in African thought that stretch back to ancient Egypt, and which are found particularly in the thought of Senghor and the work of the contemporary Nigerian philosopher Asouzu (who is taken as offering a prolegomena to any future African philosophy). Jesus' Copernican Revolution The Revelation of Divine Mercy James P. Danaher We initially read and experience everything through our cultural and linguistic prejudices. However, we achieve higher levels of consciousness when those prejudices are exposed and we move beyond them. Copernicus and Kant offered a higher level of consciousness and a better way to see the world. Jesus also offered us a higher level of consciousness by replacing rational justice with love and mercy. This divine level of consciousness threatens to destroy our sacred prejudices. So we worship Jesus as God, telling ourselves that we cannot ascend to this level of consciousness. But Jesus tells us “to be perfect as our heavenly father is perfect,” knowing that our failure to achieve perfection will bring us to the experience of God's mercy, and it is the repeated experience of mercy that in time begins to make us into his merciful likeness, and we find that our conventional concepts of faith, love, and justice are transformed.
Healing the Western Soul A Spiritual Homecoming for Today's Seeker Judith S. Miller The search for meaning, which is so crucial for psychological health, has lost its traditional anchors. As far back as the Sixties, millions of individuals began creating their own belief systems, leaving traditional religion and exploring other forms of spirituality. Social contradictions demonstrate the complex factors around the topic of the spiritual life in the West. We have reached a pivotal moment where many negative forces seem to be pulling us apart, even while powerful forces for good are bringing people around the world ever closer together. Today's meaning will be found through reclaiming and transforming our traditional spiritual anchors. US March 2015 • 252 pages PB 9781557789174 • $14.95 Paragon House
