Welcome to Bloomsbury Religious Studies Welcome to the new Religious Studies catalogue. As you will have noticed, for the first time this catalogue is coming out under the Bloomsbury name instead of the separate Continuum, Berg, and Bloomsbury Academic imprints. We wanted to give you some background to this rebranding. In 2008, Bloomsbury decided to invest in building a new academic division. Growth since that decision was taken has been very rapid: we now publish around 1,100 titles each year, with a particularly big presence in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and our backlist comprises some 20,000 titles. The purchase of Continuum in 2011 was a key part of this growth. We believe we are stronger as a group, which is why we have taken the strategic decision to adopt the Bloomsbury name for all academic titles that we publish. With effect from 1st September 2012, all new Continuum titles will be published under the Bloomsbury brand. The same applies to all Berg and Bristol Classical Press titles, as of 1st January 2013. This will make it easier for you to find quality religious studies publishing, rather than navigating across a number of imprints. The values of Continuum, Berg and other imprints which you have appreciated over the years are already integral to the larger entity that is Bloomsbury. Much has changed over the past 12 months, but we remain as committed to our authors and to publishing the same high quality textbooks, course books, research monographs, reference works, professional and general interest books, journals and online resources.
Publishing in Print and Digital Bloomsbury leads the way in digital publishing, for example with the launch of the Churchill Archive in September 2012 (www.churchillarchive.com). Providing an essential research and teaching tool, it has made more than 800,000 pages of key historical documents from the twentieth century available online for the first time. Furthermore, Drama Online (www.dramaonlinelibrary.com) will provide a collection of the most studied, performed and critically acclaimed plays from the last two and half thousand years.
Highlights Highlights of this catalogue include our new textbook on Daoism, The Daoist Tradition: An Introduction (p.6) by Louis Komjathy, and our latest Companion, The Bloomsbury Companion to Islamic Studies (p.11) edited by Clinton Bennett. The Bloomsbury Companion to Religion and Film (p.22) edited by William L. Blizek, founding Editor of The Journal of Religion and Film, is now available in paperback. Pages 8 and 9 showcase our new Guides for the Perplexed which offer clear, concise and accessible introductions, including Western Esotericism: A Guide for the Perplexed (p.8), and The Bahá’í Faith: A Guide for the Perplexed (p.8).
New Website Finally we are delighted to announce the launch of a new global Bloomsbury website: www.bloomsbury.com. This site brings together everything under the Bloomsbury Group, including Continuum, Berg, Methuen Drama, Arden Shakespeare, T&T Clark, Bristol Classical Press, and A&C Black titles. The site features enhanced academic functionality such as online previews, digital inspection copies, textbook companion sites and online resources. Go to www.bloomsbury.com/academic for more information. We hope you enjoy reading our latest Religious Studies catalogue – please remember you may also be interested in our Theology and Biblical Studies catalogue. Guide to the Study of Religion
bestseller
Edited by Willi Braun and Russell McCutcheon “This is the type of book that I could imagine using at the beginning of a world religions course in order to help students understand how scholars seek to understand religions. Or it might be used in course on research and methods. It is not a theology text per se, but it helps those of us who are theologians understand both our discipline and the location of our discipline in relation to the larger field of religious studies. I recommend it heartily!” Currents in Theology and Mission Willi Braun is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Alberta, Canada. Russell McCutcheon is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama, USA.

The bibliography is a fine listing of materials, not just on the narrower subject, but the author expands it to include religion from non-western perspectives. An excellent index concludes the book. W orld R eligions Studying World Religions Series Editor: Clinton Bennett, State University of New York at New Paltz, and Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY, USA A series of introductory guides, books in the Studying World Religions series are designed as study aids for those approaching the world’s religions for the first time. Rather than attempting to cover all the material, the critical and methodological issues that students need to grasp in the study of each religious tradition − and religion in general − are drawn out, and the major contemporary debates explored. Readers are offered the chance to engage with religious traditions as diverse, living phenomena. With helpful suggestions for further study, pointing students towards material such as primary sources (scriptures), films and novels, and including ideas for teaching, discussion topics and exercises, these guides are the perfect companions for the fledgling student of religion.

Studying Islam
bestseller
The Critical Issues Clinton Bennett “In this comprehensive study aid Bennett provides students with an introductory look at Islam from an academic point of view. The past and current attitudes and approaches to the subject are aptly represented as well as core sources such as the Qur’an. Bennett draws constructive elements from both the critical and the faith sensitive schools of thought thus setting a balanced foundation for religious study in general. This is the first volume in the Studying World Religions series, which takes on the subject of religious studies as social science rather than theology.” BOOK NEWS, Inc. She writes as a sympathetic outsider, deeply sensitive to different (sometimes conflicting) currents, and to ever-changing concerns. Above all, her reflections on how Judaism − indeed, any religion − ought to be studied merit serious attention.” Edward Kessler MBE, Founder and Director, Woolf Institute, UK MELANIE J WRIGHT was Academic Director of the Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations, and a Lecturer in Religious Studies at the Open University, UK UK March 2012 • US May 2012 248 pages PB 9780826497192 • £22.99 / $39.95 HB 9780826497185 • £45.00 / $80.00 Library eBook 9781623561970 • £45.00 / $80.00 Series: Studying World Religions
Christianity Today
bestseller
An Introduction Ron Geaves
An Introduction George D. Chryssides
“Primarily drawing on Muslim sources, Geaves discusses a range of contemporary issues, some contentious … Focusing on Islam as a lived experience, Geaves is concerned with Muslim realities, not romanticised versions. I am delighted to recommend Islam Today as a positive contribution to literature on Muslim life and thought. Hopefully, it will achieve what it sets out to do − improve Muslim-non-Muslim understanding.” Professor Clinton Bennett, The State University of New York at New Paltz, NY, USA
“Focussing on the principal Christian traditions of Roman Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Protestantism, Christianity Today is a thoughtful, learned, yet admirably accessible overview by a well-known scholar of religion. Carefully objective in its treatment of contested areas, the aim throughout is an unbiased presentation of the histories, teachings and practices of the different traditions without the privileging of any particular position. I warmly commend this lucid and engaging introduction.” Christopher Partridge, Professor of Religious Studies, Lancaster University, UK

The African Christian Diaspora New Currents and Emerging Trends in World Christianity Afe Adogame The last three decades have witnessed a rapid proliferation of African Christian Communities, particularly in Europe and North American diaspora, thus resulting in the remapping of old religious landscapes. This migratory trend and development bring to the fore the crucial role, functions and import of religious symbolic systems in new geocultural contexts. Based on extensive religious ethnography undertaken by the author among African Christian communities in Europe, the USA and Africa in the last 17 years, this book maps and describes the incipience and consolidation of new brands of African Christianities in diaspora. The African Christian Diaspora demonstrates how African Christianities are negotiating and assimilating notions of the global while maintaining their local identities.

A History of Modern Yoga Patanjali and Western Esotericism Elizabeth De Michelis
“De Michelis has made an important contribution to modern scholarship in religion with this history of yogic practice ... she is quite adept at unstitching the many complex strands of association and precedent that have gone into the modern concepts of yogic practice, from 18thcentury Bengal to 20th-century America. A crucial addition to academically inclined libraries and an important eyeopener for larger collections.” Library Journal A History of Modern Yoga traces the roots of modern yoga back to the spread of western esoteric ideas in 18th-century Bengal’s intellectual circles. Buddhism and Iconoclasm in East Asia A History Fabio Rambelli and Eric Reinders “An extremely important publication and a major contribution to Religious Studies, Buddhist Studies, Asian Studies, East Asian History, Art History/Visual Culture, and Cultural Studies. It is precisely the sort of book that many scholars in these fields, and especially those who work across them, have been waiting for. The topic is one of great significance and timeliness, the approach is methodological and theoretically sophisticated, and the authors are sensitive to the cultural and historical specificity of their cases as well as to the wider implications of their work for the comparative analysis of iconoclasm, religion, and violence.” D. A Buddhist Theory of Semiotics
Sikhs Across Borders
Signs, Ontology, and Salvation in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism Fabio Rambelli
Transnational Practices of European Sikhs Edited by Knut A. Jacobsen and Kristina Myrvold
Semiotic concerns are deeply ingrained in the Buddhist intellectual and religious discourse, beginning with the idea that the world is not what it appears to be, which calls for a more accurate understanding of the self and reality. This in turn results in sustained discussions on the status of language and representations, and on the possibility and methods to know reality beyond delusion; such peculiar knowledge is explicitly defined as enlightenment. Thus, for Buddhism, semiotics is directly relevant to salvation; this is a key point that is often ignored even by Buddhologists. This book discusses in depth the main elements of Buddhist semiotics as based primarily on original Japanese premodern sources. It is a crucial publication in the fields of semiotics and religious studies.
“The internet, pilgrimage, religious controversies, kinship networks, Sikh soldiers in World War 1 − these are just some of the subjects addressed in a work that very accessibly presents fine scholarship from seasoned specialists in Sikh Studies and younger scholars. Research in specific fields and European national contexts is excellently set in wider historical and geographical contexts. This volume will be important to teachers and students of religious and diaspora studies from a range of disciplines.” Eleanor Nesbitt, Professor Emerita at the University of Warwick, UK

G uides for the P erplexed
G uides for the P erplexed Guides for the Perplexed Bloomsbury’s Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging − or indeed downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.
Confucius: A Guide for the Perplexed Yong Huang “Yong Huang’s book is a wonderful, lively introduction to Confucianism. Huang addresses basic questions about Confucius and his views, but his treatment of them invites much more than basic understanding, discussing both Confucius and the tradition of interpreting him with rich complexity and sophistication. Huang does not shrink from deep scholarly issues but addresses them in a way both beginners and scholars will appreciate, providing a range of interpretive views in a remarkably accessible and engaging way.” Amy Olberding, Associate Professor of Philosophy at University of Oklahoma, USA YONG HUANG is Professor of Philosophy at Kutztown University, USA, and Visiting Zijiang Chair Professor of Philosophy at East China Normal University, China; he is also Editor of Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy. Sikhism: A Guide for the Perplexed Arvind-Pal Singh Mandair Sikhism’s short but relatively eventful history provides a fascinating insight into the workings of misunderstood and seemingly contradictory themes such as politics and religion, violence and mysticism, culture and spirituality, orality and textuality, tradition and modernity. Sikhism: A Guide for the Perplexed presents students with a careful analysis of these complex themes as they have manifested themselves: in the historical evolution of the Sikh traditions and the encounter of Sikhs with modernity and the West; in the philosophical teachings of its founders and their interpretation by Sikh exegetes; and in Sikh ethical and intellectual responses to contemporary issues in an increasingly secular and pluralistic world. The book concludes with a summary of the contemporary kabbalistic phenomena, particularly in light of the notoriety of some modern purveyors of Kabbalah. Those interested in the spiritual dimension to life are no longer limited to the major world faiths, but can draw upon a rapidlyexpanding range of new religions. Some of these are derived from the major religions, some are a re-working of ancient traditions, while others signify a completely new departure in spiritual experience. This book analyses the concepts we use to discuss new religions, and surveys a range of different movements which were established in the second half of the 20th century.

Interpreting the Qur’an
textbook
A Guide for the Uninitiated Clinton Bennett
bestseller
“This is a carefully conceived work, sensitive to Muslim perspectives on the Qur’an, although as a matter of principle Bennett always offers his independent judgment when questions of interpretation are involved. This volume can be commended especially to newcomers to the Qur’an and to those who have found it a difficult text. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Academic and public libraries, lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers, general readers.” CHOICE Post 9/11, sales of translations of the Qur’an have greatly increased. By reordering parts of the Qur’an, placing its chapters and verses into a continuous narrative, the author creates a framework that untangles and elucidates its seemingly unconnected content. Sufism in Britain Edited by Ron Geaves and Theodore Gabriel This volume provides an objective analysis of current trends and developments in the beliefs and practices of Sufis in Britain. Sufism is a dynamic and substantial presence within British Muslim communities and is influencing both religious and political discourses concerning the formation of Islam in Britain.
Suspensions: Contemporary Middle Eastern and Islamicate Thought Series Editors: Jason Bahbak Mohaghegh: Assistant Professor of World Literature at New Jersey City University, USA. Lucian Stone: Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Dakota, USA.
In the 21st century Sufis have re-positioned themselves to represent the views of a ‘Traditional Islam’, a non-violent ‘other Islam’, able to combat the discourses of radical movements. Major transformations have taken place in Sufism that illuminate debates over authenticity, legitimacy, and authority within Islam, and religion more generally.
This series interrupts standardised discourses involving the Islamicate world by introducing creative and emerging ideas. The incisive works included in this series provide a counterpoint to the reigning canons of theory, theology, philosophy, literature, and criticism through investigations of vast experiential typologies − such as violence, mourning, vulnerability, tension, and humour − in light of contemporary Islamicate thought.
Through examining the theory and history involved, as well as a series of case studies, Sufism in Britain charts the processes of change and offers a significant contribution to the political and religious reorganisation of the Muslim presence in Britain, and the West.

Voicing Difference Mahmut Mutman The Politics of Writing Islam provides a much-needed critique of existing forms of studying, writing and representing Islam in the West. Through critiquing ethnographic, literary, critical, psychoanalytic and theological discourses, the author reveals the problematic underlying cultural and theoretical presuppositions. Mutman demonstrates how their approach reflects the socially, politically and economically unequal relationship between the West and Islam. While offering a critical insight into concepts such as writing, power, post-colonialism, difference and otherness on a theoretical level, Mutman reveals a different perspective on Islam by emphasising its living, everyday and embodied aspects in dynamic relation with the outside world − in contrast to the stereotyped authoritarian and backward religion characterised by an omnipotent God. Throughout, Mutman develops an approach to culture as an embodied, everyday, living and ever changing practice. He argues that Islam should be perceived precisely in this way, that is, as an open, heterogeneous, interpretive, multiple and worldly belief system within the Abrahamic tradition of ethical monotheism, and as one that is contested within as well as outside its ‘own’ culture. MAHMUT MUTMAN teaches cultural and critical theory and is the co-ordinator of the Program in Cultural Studies at Istanbul Sehir University in Turkey. He has widely published on orientalism, postmodernism, nationalism, and Islam. The Poetics of Mourning in the Middle East
A Cultural History of Jewish Dress
Elegies
A Cultural History of Jewish Dress is the first comprehensive account of how Jews have been distinguished by their appearance from Ancient Israel to today. For centuries Jews have dressed in distinctive ways to communicate their devotion to God, their religious identity, and the proper earthly roles of men and women. This lively work explores the rich history of Jewish dress, examining how Jews and non-Jews alike debated and legislated Jewish attire in different places, as well as outlining the big debates on dress within the Jewish community today.
Alina Gharabegian In the birthplace of the Abrahamic religions, the postmodern elegy reads like a forlorn prayer. The world of formalised grief comes to life in this volume about the ancient ways in which the East sorrows over suffering, over anguish, over death. A collection of Armenian, Iranian, and Arabic poets from the 19th and 20th centuries are gathered to formulate a theory of poeticised affect that stands counter to Western conceptualisations of loss and elegiac mourning. Through a psycho-poetic approach, this book investigates themes such as disaster, exile, pity, humanness, boundlessness, forgetting, condemnation, the unnamable, prophecy, profusion, and cosmic grief. Hostage Spaces of the Contemporary Islamicate World Phantom Territoriality Dejan Lukic “An extended and highly original meditation on the ambiguous figure of the hostage in modern life.” Faisal Devji, Reader in Modern South Asian History at the University of Oxford, UK This book investigates the modes of desire and politics found in kidnapping, in order to reveal the voices of victims and kidnappers that often remain closed up. Dejan Lukic explores the spaces where hostages and hostage takers come into contact − spaces of accident, sacrifice, hope, and catastrophe − or, in other words, the spaces that announce utopias bound to fail. In this book, the figures of the victim, the terrorist, the sovereign, the resistance fighter and the witness − among others − emerge with a new face; one that will contribute to our understandings of what it means to act politically and ethically today. Doukhan reads Levinas’s philosophy as a philosophy of exile, one that bridges the gap between exile and ethics and thus offers new interpretive tools for thinking about societies in crisis as a result of the exile inside and outside the community.” Claire Katz, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Women’s Studies at Texas A&M University, USA This original and compelling book distills from Levinas’s philosophy a wisdom of exile, for the first time shedding a positive light on the condition of exile itself. A New Physiognomy of Jewish Thinking
Beyond the Sanctification of Subordination Melanie Landau
Aubrey L. Glazer
“Melanie Malka Landau’s book combines an impressive grasp of traditional text and contemporary theory, with the courage to move beyond the parameters of the current discourse … This book reads both as an insightful analysis of the way that Jewish tradition more or less successfully wrestled with the issues of non-reciprocal marriage (and its corollary the agunah or chained wife), but also as a journal of the way that Landau wrestled with the questions of fidelity to that tradition. This book will be an important part of any future discussion of marriage in Judaism.” Aryeh Cohen, Associate Professor of Rabbinic Literature at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, American Jewish University, USA Melanie Landau offers two alternative models of partnership that partially or fully bypass the non-reciprocity of traditional Jewish marriage and that have their basis in the ancient rabbinic texts.

The Robert and Arlene Kogod Library of Judaic Studies, Israel publishes new research which provides innovative directions for modern Jewish thought and life and which serves to enhance the quality of dialogue between classical sources and the modern world. This book series reflects the mission of the Shalom Hartman Institute, a pluralistic research and leadership institute, at the forefront of Jewish thought and education. It empowers scholars, rabbis, educators and layleaders to develop new and diverse voices within the tradition, laying foundations for the future of Jewish life in Israel and around the world.
Rabbinic Creativity in the Modern Middle East Zvi Zohar Rabbinic Creativity in the Modern Middle East provides a window for readers of English around the world into the hitherto almost inaccessible writings and religious worldviews of Sephardic-Oriental rabbis in modern times. Instead of portraying Sephardic culture as exotic or quaint, expressed in food, costume and folklore, it is shown to consist of serious intellectual and religious creativity. The text has three sections: Iraq, Syria, and Egypt, and each section discusses a range of original sources that reflect and represent the creativity of major rabbinic figures in these countries. The contents of the writings of these Sephardic rabbis challenge many currently adopted dichotomies commonly held to characterise Judaism’s responses to modern challenges. By bringing an additional, nonWestern voice into the intellectual arena, this book enriches the field of contemporary discussions regarding the present and future of Judaism. ZVI ZOHAR is Chauncey Stillman Professor of Sephardic Law and Ethics at Bar Ilan University, where he teaches in the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Jewish Studies. At the Shalom Hartman Institute, Dr Zohar heads the Alan A. and Laraine Fischer Family Center for Contemporary Halakha.

Why Rousseau was Wrong Christianity and the Secular Soul Frances Ward “Frances Ward shows herself to have a real understanding of what is wrong with contemporary Britain … Her diagnosis is acute; the remedies suggested in this wise and compassionate book deserve very serious consideration.” From the Foreword by Alexander McCall Smith What does it mean to belong? What does corporate identity look like? What happens if we judge each other in terms of character, instead of identity? Frances Ward argues that Britain is brittle today because we have forgotten how to nurture belonging and trust. The ‘dominant’ culture is immobilised by guilt, political correctness and fear of causing offence. The ‘subordinated’ population are defensive of their identity, often in competition for rights with others, resulting in a grievance culture that is resentful and ready to riot. Drawing on her experience of friendships between Christian and Muslim women in Bradford, Ward offers an alternative model of citizenship to the excessive individualism of secular humanism. FRANCES WARD is Dean of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich, UK and is an inter-faith specialist. She was formerly a Canon of Bradford Cathedral. The Muslim World and Politics in Transition
Religion or Belief, Discrimination and Equality Britain in Global Contexts Paul Weller, Kingsley Purdam, Nazila Ghanea, Sariya Contractor In recent years, controversial issues related to religion or belief, discrimination, equality and human rights have come to the fore in public debate. This includes the question of the nature and extent of unfair treatment on the basis of religion and debate about how far the law should be at all involved in this area, and on what basis. Religion or Belief, Discrimination and Equality includes data and insights derived from the fieldwork, focus groups and questionnaire survey of a recent national research project in the UK over 10 years. Grounded in empirical and contextualised data, the volume’s analysis places the case study in the context of broader global discussions in the EU, North America and Australia. It will be a benchmark publication on religion, discrimination and equality. Creative Contributions of the Gülen Movement Edited by Greg Barton, Paul Weller and Ihsan Yilmaz As a leading religious movement in contemporary Turkey with a universal educational and interfaith agenda, the Gülen movement aims to promote creative and positive relations between the West and the Muslim world and to articulate a constructive position on such issues as democracy, multiculturalism, globalisation, and interfaith dialogue in the context of secular modernity. Many countries in the predominantly Muslim world are in a time of transition and of opening to democratic development of which the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ has seen only the most recent and dramatic developments. The Muslim World and Politics in Transition discusses how the Gülen movement has positioned itself and sought to contribute within societies − including its home country of Turkey − in which Islam forms a major part of the cultural, religious and historical inheritance and Muslims constitute the majority of their populations. GREG BARTON is the Herb Feith Research Professor for the Study of Indonesia, Faculty of Arts, Monash University, Australia. Place, Ecology and the Sacred
Church and State Religious Nationalism and State Identification in PostCommunist Romania
The Moral Geography of Sustainable Communities Michael S. Northcott Place, Ecology and the Sacred demonstrates how the loss of a sense of place is of central importance to the modern ecological crisis. Bringing together and further developing some of his groundbreaking work on the concept of parochial ecology, or placebased environmentalism, Northcott argues that the recovery of a sense of place − and of governmental structures and moral practices that map onto and arise out of place-specific communities − is essential to the resolution of the ecological crisis.

The Future of Blasphemy
bestseller
Speaking of the Sacred in an Age of Human Rights Austin Dacey “If universally adopted and practiced, Dacey’s proposed No Compliance Principle would force those offended, or pretending to be offended, by blasphemy to fight back with art, literature and argument rather than bombs and daggers.” The New York Post The Future of Blasphemy defends an ethical model of blasphemy. Controversies surrounding sacrilege are contests over what counts as sacred, disagreements about what has central, inviolable, and incommensurable value. In such public contestation of the sacred, each of us − secular and religious alike − has equal right to speak on its behalf.

Can secularism continue to provide a foundation for political legitimacy? It is often claimed that one of the cultural achievements of the west has been its establishment of secular democracy, wherein religious belief is respected but confined to the sphere of private belief. As western secularism experiences a crisis of confidence, where may we look for inspiration and guidance as to the way forward? Confronting Secularism in Europe and India suggests that such a resource may be found in the rich but different tradition of secularism that has developed in Indian thought and practice. By staging an encounter between western and Indian conceptions of secularism, it is hoped that western thinking may be inspired to develop its own secular trajectory in creative and innovative ways as one way of addressing the most pressing problems of contemporary times.

S ociology of R eligion
S ociology of R eligion Key Concepts in Religion Key Concepts in Religion is a series of concise, accessible and engaging introductions to the core ideas and subjects encountered in the study of religion. Written to meet the need of students and those with an interest in, but little prior knowledge of, religion, the books open up fascinating, yet sometimes difficult ideas.
Ritual: Key Concepts in Religion
textbook
Pamela J. Stewart and Andrew Strathern Ritual has emerged as a major focus of academic interest. As a concept, the idea of ritual integrates the study of behaviour both within and beyond the domain of religion. Ritual can be both secular and religious in character. There is renewed interest in questions such as: Why do rituals exist at all? What has been, and continues to be, their place in society? How do they change over time? Such questions exist against a backdrop of assumptions about development, modernization, and disenchantment of the world. Written with the specific needs of students of religious studies in mind, Ritual: Key Concepts in Religious Studies surveys the field of ritual studies looking at it both historically within anthropology and in terms of its contemporary relevance to mass phenomena. This is an engaging and clear introduction to a fascinating, but complex, component of the undergraduate religious studies curriculum. PAMELA J. STEWART is Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. ANDREW STRATHERN is Mellon Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. They are a research team who have carried out fieldwork in the Pacific region and Europe and have published widely on their research.
Christianity and the University Experience Understanding Student Faith Mathew Guest, Kristin Aune, Sonya S. Sharma and Rob Warner Surprising numbers of undergraduates at English universities still call themselves Christian. They find this to be central to their identity, a key driver in their attitudes, volunteering, approach to their studies, and personal spiritual practices. But many of them don’t go to church very often, and their social attitudes are often far closer to those of mainstream society than those of conservative Christian leaders, Catholic or Protestant. Through analysing over 4,500 responses to a questionnaire and over 75 in-depth interviews, this book examines student Christians in their own words. The results make fascinating reading for anyone interested in the survival and continued evolution of religion in the contemporary world. MATHEW GUEST is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theology and Religion, Durham University, UK. Kristin AUNE is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Derby, UK. SONYA S. Santo Daime
Bloomsbury Studies in Religion and Popular Music
A New World Religion Andrew Dawson Santo Daime: A New World Religion deals with a young, exotic and controversial religious movement. Emerging in the Brazilian Amazon in the 1930s, Santo Daime has since spread to many of the world’s major cities. Santo Daime is a mixture of indigenous, popular Catholic, Afro-Brazilian, esoteric, Spiritist, and new age beliefs and activities. Ritual practice is centred on the consumption of a psychotropic beverage called ‘Daime’ which members believe enhances their interaction with the supernatural world. Santo Daime: A New World Religion is an accessible and multidisciplinary book suitable for undergraduate students and researchers working in Religious Studies, Sociology of Religion, Anthropology, Cultural Studies and Latin American Studies. ANDREW DAWSON is Senior Lecturer in Religion at Lancaster University, UK. Series Editors: Christopher Partridge, Professor of Religious Studies, Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion, Lancaster University, UK. Sara Cohen, Professor of Music, Director of the Institute for Popular Music, Liverpool University, UK. Religion’s relationship to popular music has ranged from opposition to ‘the Devil’s music’ to an embracing of modern styles and subcultures in order to communicate its ideas and defend its values. Similarly, from jazz to reggae, gospel to heavy metal, and bhangra to qawwali, there are few genres of contemporary popular music that have not dealt with ideas and themes related to religion, spiritual and the paranormal. Whether we think of Satanism or Sufism, the liberal use of drugs or disciplined abstinence, the history of the quest for transcendence within popular music and its subcultures raises important issues for anyone interested in contemporary religion, culture and society. Bloomsbury Studies in Religion and Popular Music is a multi-disciplinary series that aims to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of these issues and the relationships between religion and popular music.

Sacred and Secular Musics Secularization and Its Discontents
bestseller
Rob Warner “Professor Warner’s overview of the sociological disagreements on the nature and extent of the secularisation thesis is a major contribution to the debate. Clearly on the side of what he calls (following Freud) the ‘discontents’ of the theories he does not attempt to win others over to his view of things. This is not a book about mission or apologetics; it is a work of intellectual clarification and moral candour that looks for synthesis of opposing ideas where others see only contradictions.” Andrew Walker, King’s College London
A Postcolonial Approach Virinder S. Kalra How does the sacred/secular opposition explain itself in the context of musical production? This volume pushes the analysis of this opposition out of Europe and European thought, which prefigures western understandings of what is sacred and secular, what is classical and popular. Rather, Virinder S. Kalra explores examples of African and South Asian musics in various domains and develops a new cartography of music, in which the sacred and the secular overlap.
A CHOICE OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC TITLE, 2011
Drawing on examples which include rap music, Qwaali and Kirtan, Sacred and Secular Musics offers new empirical material, as well as new insights into conceptualising religion and music, and the ways in which music performs sacredness and secularity in different geographical and historical spaces.
Secularization and Its Discontents provides an illuminating overview of major current debates in the sociology of religion, exploring changing patterns of religious practice in the west during the past 150 years.
Through its deconstruction of the sacred/secular opposition, the author explores the relationship of religion and music to wider questions of religion and politics.

Natural Burial
Religious Objects in Museums
Traditional − Secular Spiritualities and Funeral Innovation Douglas Davies and Hannah Rumble
Private Lives and Public Duties Crispin Paine
“This important and original book traces and analyses the rapid rise of ‘natural burial’ since its inception in Britain in 1993. It argues convincingly that the popularity of natural burial is associated with a distinctive mode of spirituality.” Professor Charles Watkins, University of Nottingham, UK “Provides a brilliant and theoretically sound analysis of why this new choice next to conventional burial and cremation appeals to the British. Natural Burial is a must read for all students of comparative death studies.” Professor Eric Venbrux, Centre for Thanatology, Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands Themes from sociology and anthropology combine with psychological issues and theological ideas to show how human emotions take shape and help people consider their own death whilst also dealing with the death of those they love.
“The author takes his readers on a magical world tour of tangible things that were once − and in some cases still are − used in a huge variety of religious settings. With a cosmopolitan lightness of touch, Paine demonstrates the radical instability of such things, even once they have found their way into museums … No other book introduces readers more engagingly to the puzzles surrounding how museums address the sacred realm worldwide.” Ivan Gaskell, Professor of Cultural History, and of Museum Studies, Bard Graduate Center, New York City Using examples from all over the world, Religious Objects in Museums is the first book to examine how religious objects are transformed when they enter the museum, and how they affect curators and visitors. CRISPIN PAINE is Honorary Lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL, UK.

Religious Objects and Performance
Semiotics of Religion Signs of the Sacred in History Robert A. Yelle “This book is vast in scope, deep in implications, and admirably clear and forthright in exposition. The study of religion has needed a work of this kind, which brings together several research traditions and pushes the resulting synthesis in new directions. The result is an agenda-setting project of huge ambition.” Webb Keane, University of Michigan, USA “In this enchanting book Yelle demonstrates a more inclusive semiotics of religion.” Michael Silverstein, Charles F. Grey Distinguished Service Professor, University of Chicago, USA Following the heyday of Lévi-Straussian structuralism in the 1970s-80s, little attention has been paid by scholars of religion to semiotics. Semiotics of Religion reassesses key semiotic theories in the light of religious data. Building from the legacy of structuralism while interrogating several key doctrines of that movement, Semiotics of Religion both introduces the field to a new generation and charts a course for future research.
Testing the Role of Materiality Amy Whitehead Objects such as statues and icons have long been problematic in the study of religion, especially in European Christianities. Through examining two groups, the contemporary Pagan Glastonbury Goddess religion in the Southwest of England and a cult of the Virgin Mary in Andalusia, Spain, Amy Whitehead asserts that objects can be more than representational or symbolic. In the context of increasing academic interest in materiality in religions and cultures, she shows how statues, or ‘things’, are not always interacted with as if they are inert material against which we typically define ourselves as ‘modern’ humans. Both theoretical and descriptive, the book illustrates how religions and cultural practices can be re-examined as performances that necessarily involve not only human persons, but also objects. Silver Screen Buddha How are Budddhists and Buddism represented in contemporary films? Are these mediated sources true representations of the Buddhist tradition? Silver Screen Buddha is the first book to explore the representation of Buddhism in contemporary films directed by both Asian and non-Asian directors. It examines the cinematic encounter with Buddhism that has flourished in Asia and in the West in the past century − from images of Shangri-La in Frank Capra’s 1937 Lost Horizon to Kim Ki-Duk’s 2003 international box office success, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring. The book helps readers see that representations of Buddhism in Asia and in the West are often fraught with political, nationalistic, gendered and racist undertones that are missed and overlooked by viewers.

The Late Walter Benjamin John Schad “... as fascinating as the most experimental avant-garde mobilisations of literature during the interwar period. Stein, Breton, Pirandello and Pessoa come to mind.” Geoffrey Hartman, Yale University, USA A startling critical-creative examination of one of the 20th Century’s leading thinkers, The Late Walter Benjamin is a documentary novel that juxtaposes the life and death of Walter Benjamin with the days, hours and minutes of a working-class council estate on the edge of London in post-war Austerity England. The novel centres on one particular tenant who claims to be Walter Benjamin, and only ever uses words written by Benjamin, apparently oblivious that the real Benjamin committed suicide 20 years earlier whilst fleeing the Nazis. Religion and Popular Music Rupert Till “The useful concluding chapter gives a wake-up call to a Church that has lost touch with culture, and a well-argued case for how popular music is in part filling its place.” Church Times Pop Cult investigates the ways in which popular music and its surrounding culture have become a primary site for the location of meaning, belief and identity. It provides an introduction to the history of the interactions of vernacular music and religion, and the role of music in religious culture. RUPERT TILL is Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Huddersfield, UK.
“It is a seductive but dangerous idea to want to sanctify the machinations of political power with the imprimatur of providence … [the author] has an extraordinary ability to weave a narrative thread through a thicket of conceptual and historical complexity.” James Wetzel, Augustinian Endowed Chair, Villanova University Holding divine intervention responsible for political and military success and failure has a long history in western thought. Sacred Landscapes in Ancient Egypt Steven Snape For the ancient Egyptians the whole of the natural world was divine, not only because it was created by the gods, but more particularly because its individual parts − the sun, the sky, the Nile − were gods. Taking the Egypt of Ramesses II as his focal point, Steven Snape explores the holy landscapes of Egypt, both the natural world and the built landscape of temples, tombs and colossal statuary. With extensive use of quotations from hieroglyphic texts, the author allows the ‘voices’ of the ancient Egyptians to be heard. This is a revelatory and fresh exploration of how the ancient Egyptians reacted to the presence of the divine around them. The Labour Party and the Free Churches 1918-1939 The Distinctiveness of British Socialism Peter Catterall It has long been held that the early Labour movement owed a debt to Nonconformity, but relatively little attention has been paid to this relationship during the interwar years. The Labour Party and the Free Churches explores how, during this period, the party formalised, replaced the Liberals as the main party of the Left in Britain, and created a boundary between itself and the recently formed Communist Party. Peter Catterall demonstrates the influence on political Nonconfirmity on these developments, through the ideological, political and electoral relationship between the Free Churches and the Labour Party. This book makes an original contribution to the history of twentieth century Britain and in particular to the history of the Labour Party and of the Churches. Meditation in Judaism, Christianity and Islam Cultural Histories Edited by Halvor Eifring Meditative practices have flourished in widely different parts of Eurasia, yet historical research on such practices is limited. Research to date has focussed on contexts rather than actual practices, and within individual traditions. For the first time in one volume, the meditative practices of the three traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam are examined. They are viewed in a global perspective, considering both generic and historical connections to practices in other traditions, particularly India and East Asia. The book builds on a notion of meditation as selfadministered techniques for inner transformation, a definition that focuses on transformative practice rather than notions of meditative states and mystical experiences. Studies published under its auspices look to clarify the role and place of Religious Studies in the academy, but not in a purely theoretical manner. Each study will demonstrate its theoretical aspects by applying them to the actual study of religions, often in the form of frontier research.
Religion and the Inculturation of Human Rights in Ghana Abamfo Ofori Atiemo
Julian Droogan
Based on fieldwork conducted in Ghana, Abamfo Ofori Atiemo here establishes a convergence between human rights and local religious and cultural values in African societies. He argues that human rights represent universal ‘dream values’. This allows for a cultural embedding of human rights in Ghana and other non-Western societies. He argues that ‘dream values’ are usually presented in religious language and proclaimed, for example, by prophets and seers or expressed in certain forms of taboo, proverbs or legal norms.
Religion, Material Culture and Archaeology offers a new understanding of the materiality of religion. By drawing on the field of archaeological theory and method, the relationship between religion and material culture is explored.
Offering a new model for explaining the relation between religion and human rights, Religion and the Inculturation of Human Rights in Ghana offers a novel perspective on the links between global trends and local cultures underpinned by strong currents of religious ideas. Redefining Shamanisms Spiritualist Mediums and Other Traditional Shamans as Apprenticeship Outcomes David Gordon Wilson “This is a rare and valuable field study of Spiritualism, more so because its author is both a practicing medium and a fine scholar of religion. In addition, it is a truly comparative study that goes beyond description to make an innovative case for rethinking the category of ‘shamanism’ in light of a core emphasis on apprenticeship.” Steven Engler, Associate Professor in the Humanities Department at Mount Royal University, Calgary, Canada Spiritualism and mediumship are often regarded as the product of lingering superstition in the Victorian era, and as having limited relevance in modern Anglo-American society. By re-examining the work of Sergei Shirokogoroff, one of Eliade’s principal sources, the traditional Evenki shamanic apprenticeship is compared and identified with the new Spiritualist apprenticeship. Religion, Material Culture and Archaeology
The volume considers the historical problems of approaching the material elements of religious life and bridges the methodological gap between religious studies and archaeology by proposing a new way of understanding the materiality of religion − as active, engaged and projecting a level of autonomous social agency. Finally, the critical examination of archaeological approaches to the materiality of religion is furthered through the consideration of non-archaeological ways of examining the social roles that material culture plays in human life. Community and Worldview among Paraiyars of South India ‘Lived’ Religion Anderson H. M. Jeremiah This volume presents a detailed ethnographic study of rural Paraiyar communities in South India, focusing on their religions and cultural identity. Formerly known as Dalits, or Untouchables, these are a largely socially marginalised group living within a dynamic and complex social matrix dominated by the caste system and its social and religious implications in India. Through examining Paraiyar Christian communities, the author provides a comprehensive understanding of Paraiyar religious worldviews within the dominant Hindu religious worldview. In contrast to existing research, this volume places the Paraiyars within their wider social context, ascribed and achieved identity, religious symbolism and ritual and negotiation of social boundaries. The Purpose of Life
Free Will
A Theistic Perspective Stewart Goetz
Sourcehood and its Alternatives Kevin Timpe
“A very stimulating and readable defense of a theistic hedonistic understanding of happiness as the purpose of life; it should be of interest to philosophers of religion and value theorists at every level, from the undergraduate upwards.” T. J. Mawson, Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy, University of Oxford, UK What does philosophy have to say on the question of the meaning of life? This is one of the founding questions of philosophy and has been the cause for debate among philosophers from antiquity through to the Middle Ages and modern period. It may surprise some readers that there has, in fact, been a good deal of agreement on the answer to this question: the meaning of life is happiness. The Purpose of Life is a serious but engaging exploration and defense of this answer. In working through the ramifications of this answer, Stewart Goetz provides a survey of the debates surrounding life’s meaning, from both theists and atheists alike.
Contemporary debates on free will are numerous and multifaceted. According to compatibilists, it is possible for an agent to be determined in all her choices and actions and still be free. Incompatibilists, on the other hand, think that the existence of free will is incompatible with the truth of determinism. There are also two dominant conceptions of the nature of free will. According to the first, it is primarily a function of being able to do otherwise than one in fact does. The second approach focuses on issues of sourcehood, holding that free will is primarily a function of an agent being the source of her actions in a particular way. This book guides the student through all these debates, demarcating the different conceptions of free will, exploring the relationships between them, and examining how they relate to the debate between compatibilists and incompatibilists.
STEWART GOETZ is Ross Frederick Wicks Distinguished Professor in Philosophy and Religion at Ursinus College, PA, USA.
KEVIN TIMPE is Professor of Philosophy at Northwest Nazarene University, USA, and former Templeton Research Fellow at St. Peter’s College, University of Oxford, UK.

Contemplating Religious Forms of Life: Wittgenstein and D.Z. Phillips
Excursions with Kierkegaard
Mikel Burley “Contemplating Religious Forms of Life is a pleasure to read. It is articulate, fair, and shows impressive familiarity with the relevant literature. Mikel Burley clearly brings out the value of D. Z. Phillips’ influential Wittgensteinian approach to the philosophy of religion without ever denying or ignoring its weaknesses. This is a sympathetic and reliable guide to an enormous and controversial body of work.” Duncan Richter, Professor of Philosophy, Virginia Military Institute, USA In Contemplating Religious Forms of Life, Mikel Burley elucidates and critically examines the work of Wittgenstein and D.Z. Phillips in relation to various aspects of religion, including ritual, mystical experience, faith and reason, realism and non-realism, conceptions of eternal life, and the use of literature as a resource for the contemplation of religious and non-religious beliefs. MIKEL BURLEY is Lecturer in Religion and Philosophy at the University of Leeds, UK. His previous publications include two books on Indian philosophy, and articles on, among other things, philosophy of religion, ethics, literature, and reincarnation.
Others, Goods, Death, Final Faith Edward F. Mooney Noted Kierkegaard scholar Edward Mooney guides the reader through the major themes of the Danish philosopher’s life and thought. Each chapter frames a striking issue, usually encapsulated in a short passage from Kierkegaard, and pursues it directly and deeply. The chapters of this book follow and re-animate Kierkegaard’s brilliant and humorous discussions of death and authenticity, of the maternal and paternal in faith and self-transformations, of self-deception and obsessive judgmentalism, of love and the search for stable centres, and of subjectivity as refinement of responsiveness to others, the world, and all we can value. The Iconic Imagination Douglas Hedley Why is beauty consoling? Ancient and Medieval Western philosophy was primarily concerned with beauty in relation to truth and goodness. The theistic religions assume a link between beauty, goodness and truth, all of which are viewed as Divine attributes. This is one reason for the iconoclasm that all three Abrahamic religions share to a greater or lesser degree. Yet, creative fictions of great artistic beauty aspire to a certain truthfulness. The Iconic Imagination is both a reflection on the redemptive potential of art, and an investigation of the traditions of occidental Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam in their confrontations with the particular power of art to represent the transcendent. Throughout, Hedley argues that the malaise of much contemporary reflection upon beauty is a consequence of the marginalisation of beauty’s religious dimension.
The Ethics of Nonviolence Essays by Richard L. Holmes Robert L. Holmes Edited by Predrag Cicovacki Robert Holmes is one of the leading proponents of nonviolence in the United States, and his influence extends to the rest of the world. However, he has never presented his views on nonviolence in fulllength book form. The Ethics of Nonviolence brings together his best essays on the topic, both classic works and more obscure pieces, as well as several important essays that have never been published. Holmes started his career by following Dewey and James, and then turned toward metaethics. The Vietnam War finally led him toward moral problems related to war and violence. For the last forty years he has been a great proponent of nonviolence and pacifism in the style of Tolstoy and Gandhi.
DOUGLAS HEDLEY is Reader in Hermeneutics and Metaphysics and Fellow of Clare College, University of Cambridge, UK.
ROBERT L. HOLMES is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Rochester, USA. He has published over 75 scholarly papers. PREDRAG CICOVACKI is Professor of Philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross, MA, USA.

Divine Self, Human Self
The Evolving God
The Philosophy of Being in Two Gita Commentaries Chakravarthi Ram-Prasad
Charles Darwin on the Naturalness of Religion J. David Pleins
The Gita is a central text in Hindu traditions, and commentaries on it express a range of philosophical-theological positions. Two of the most significant commentaries are by Sankara, the founder of the Advaita or Non-Dualist system of Vedic thought and by Ramanuja, the founder of the Visistadvaita or Qualified Non-Dualist system. Their commentaries offer rich resources for the conceptualisation and understanding of divine reality, the human self, being, the relationship between God and human, and the moral psychology of action and devotion. This book approaches their commentaries through a study of the interaction between the abstract atman (self) and the richer conception of the human person.
In focusing on the story of Darwin’s religious doubts, scholars too often overlook Darwin’s positive contribution to the study of religion. J. David Pleins traces Darwin’s journey in five steps. He begins with Darwin’s global voyage, where his encounter with religious and cultural diversity transformed his understanding of religion. Next, we follow Darwin as his doubts about traditional biblical religion take root, affecting his career choice and marriage to Emma Wedgwood. Pleins then examines Darwin’s secret notebooks as he searches for a materialist theory of religion and explores how Darwin applied his discovery to the realm of ethics by formulating an evolutionary view of the ‘Golden Rule’ in his Descent of Man. Finally, he considers Darwin’s later reflections on the religion question, as he wrestled with whether his views led to atheism, agnosticism, or a new kind of theism. The Evolving God concludes by looking at some of the current religious debates surrounding Darwin and suggests the need for a deeper appreciation for Darwin as a religious thinker.

Pluralism: The Future of Religion Kenneth Rose Theology of religions has defaulted in the last two decades to an epicyclic inclusivism which seeks to undermine pluralism with claims that it is covertly triumphalistic and that it mirrors the logic of exclusivism. Pluralism: The Future of Religion argues for an apophatic pluralism that is motivated by the insight that it is impossible to secure universal assent for changeable bodies of religious teachings. Religion and Revelation after Auschwitz Essays on Catholic Philosophy Balazs M. Mezei Religion and Revelation After Auschwitz is a philosophical approach to the notion of revelation. Following such authors as A. Dulles, R. Swinburne, or K. Ward, Balazs Mezei investigates some of the main problems of revelation and connects them to the general problem of religion today. Religion is considered in the perspective of the age ‘after Auschwitz’. BALAZS M. MEZEI is Professor of Philosophy at Peter Pazmany Catholic University, Hungary. He has widely published on the philosophy of religion, phenomenology, and literary criticism.
Non-dualism in Eckhart, Julian of Norwich and Traherne A Theopoetic Reflection James Charlton The words ‘me’, ‘mine’, ‘you’, ‘yours’, can mislead us into feeling separate from other people. This book is an exhilarating contribution to the spirituality of non-duality or non-separation. Meister Eckhart, Mother Julian of Norwich and Thomas Traherne are interpreted as ‘theopoets’ of the body/soul who share a moderate non-dualism. Their work is brought within the ambit of non-dual Hinduism. Specifically, their passion for unitive spiritual experience is linked to construals of both ‘the Self’ and ‘Awakening’, as enunciated by Advaita Vedanta. Charlton draws on poetry, theology and philosophy to perceive fresh connections. This text contributes to a recovery, in the West, of the vital, unifying power of non-dual awareness and connectedness. JAMES CHARLTON earned his PhD from the University of Tasmania and his MA from the University of Cambridge. He is a poet and theological writer with an interest in transformative spiritual knowledge and experience, across traditions. God and Evidence Problems for Theistic Philosophers Rob Lovering God and Evidence presents a new set of compelling problems for theistic philosophers. The problems pertain to three types of theistic philosopher, which Lovering defines here as ‘theistic inferentialists,’ ‘theistic non-inferentialists,’ and ‘theistic fideists.’ Theistic inferentialists believe that God exists, that there is inferential probabilifying evidence of God’s existence, and that this evidence is discoverable not simply in principle but in practice. Theistic noninferentialists believe that God exists, that there is non-inferential probabilifying evidence of God’s existence, and that this evidence is discoverable not simply in principle but in practice. Theistic fideists believe that God exists, that there is no discoverable probabilifying evidence (inferential or non-inferential) of God’s existence, and that it is nevertheless acceptable − morally if not otherwise − to have faith that God exists. Lovering argues that each type of theistic philosopher faces a problem unique to his type and that they all share two particular problems. Violence, Desire, and the Sacred
Tragic Views of the Human Condition
Girard’s Mimetic Theory Across the Disciplines Edited by Scott Cowdell, Chris Fleming, Joel Hodge
Cross-cultural Comparisons between Views of Human Nature in Greek and Shakespearean tragedy and the Mahabharata and Bhagavadgita Lourens Minnema
Foreword by Wolfgang Palaver “This superbly-edited collection addresses the key issues in mimetic theory for this century, all of which require the interdisciplinary approach followed here. Readers who have been following the resurgent interest in René Girard’s work will recognise the names of James Alison, Wolfgang Palaver, Jeremiah Alberg and Chris Fleming. To the centres already known at Stanford, Paris and Innsbruck, which generate scholarship and attract fellow researchers as students and colleagues, we must now add The Australian Girard Seminar.” William A. Johnsen, Editor, Contagion. Journal of Violence, Mimesis, and Culture Violence, Desire and the Sacred presents the most up-to-date interdisciplinary work being developed with the ground-breaking insights of René Girard’s mimetic theory. The collection showcases the work of outstanding scholars in mimetic theory and how they are applying and developing Girard’s insights in a variety of fields. SCOTT COWDELL is Associate Professor and Research Fellow in Public and Contextual Theology at Charles Sturt University, Australia. CHRIS FLEMING is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy and Anthropology, School of Humanities and Languages, the University of Western Sydney, Australia. JOEL HODGE is Lecturer in Systematic Theology, School of Theology, Australian Catholic University, Australia. WOLFGANG PALAVER is Professor and Chair of the Institute for Systematic Theology at the University of Innsbruck, Austria.
TRAGIC VIEWS OF THE HUMAN CONDITION
Can tragic views of the human condition as known to Westerners through Greek and Shakespearean tragedy be identified outside European culture, in the Indian culture of Hinduepic drama? In what respects can the Mahabharata epic’s and the Bhagavadgita’s views of the human condition be called ‘tragic’ in the Greek and Shakespearean senses of the word? Tragic views of the human condition are primarily embedded in stories. Only afterwards are these tragic views expounded in theories of tragedy and in philosophical anthropologies. In the West, these stories constitute a specific narrative genre: ‘tragedy’. Minnema identifies embedded views of human nature in stories − issues such as coping with evil, suffering, loss, death, power, gender, injustice, fate, freedom − and explores them first in terms of their particular settings before comparing them cross-culturally. B loomsbury S tudies in P hilosophy of R eligion Bloomsbury Studies in Philosophy of Religion Series Editor: Stewart Goetz, Ross Frederick Wicks Distinguished Professor in Philosophy and Religion at Ursinus College, PA, USA. Bloomsbury Studies in Philosophy of Religion presents scholarly monographs offering cutting-edge research and debate to students and scholars in philosophy of religion. The series engages with the central questions and issues within the field, including the problem of evil, the cosmological, teleological, moral, and ontological arguments for the existence of God, divine foreknowledge, and the coherence of theism. It also incorporates volumes on the following metaphysical issues as and when they directly impact on the philosophy of religion: the existence and nature of the soul, the existence and nature of free will, natural law, the meaning of life, and science and religion
Well-Being and Theism Linking Ethics to God William A. Lauinger
University, USA
“In Well-Being and Theism, William Lauinger defends a new and provocative theory of human well-being − the desire-perfectionist view. His account draws on insights from the objective list and desire-fulfilment traditions, while challenging key assumptions of these views … Lauinger’s volume is a pleasure to read and a welcome contribution to the well-being debate.” Christopher M. Rice, Professor of Philosophy, Fordham
Well-Being and Theism is divided into two distinctive parts. The first part argues that desire-fulfilment welfare theories fail to capture the ‘good’ part of ‘good for’, and that objective list welfare theories fail to capture the ‘for’ part of ‘good for’. In the second part, Lauinger explores the question “What metaphysics best supports the claim that the vast majority of humans have the desires for friendship, accomplishment, health, etc., built into themselves?” WILLIAM A. The Moral Argument Paul Copan The Moral Argument offers a wide-ranging defense of the necessary connection between God and objective moral values, moral duties, proper function, and human rights. It presents several versions of the moral argument for God’s existence; a survey of the history of the argument, including the more recent work of Robert Adams, John Hare, John Rist, and others; an assessment of competing meta-ethical views that attempt to ground or explain ethics; a defence of moral knowledge; and an assessment of the Euthyphro Dilemma (and related objections) for any theistic conception of moral values. The book examines various non-theistic alternatives to ground or explain morality. MARK D. LINVILLE is an independent philosopher based in Atlanta, USA. Free Will in Philosophical Theology Kevin Timpe Free Will in Philosophical Theology takes the most recent philosophical work on free will and uses it to elucidate and explore theological doctrines involving free will. Rather than being a work of natural theology, it is a work in what has been called clarification − using philosophy to understand, develop, systematise, and explain theological claims without first raising the justification for holding the theological claims that one is working with. Timpe’s aim is to show how a particular philosophical account of the nature of free will—an account known as source incompatibilism − can help us understand a range of theological doctrines. KEVIN TIMPE is Professor of Philosophy at Northwest Nazarene University, USA, and former Templeton Research Fellow at St. Peter’s College, University of Oxford, UK. Goodness, God, and Evil David E. Alexander “David Alexander has written a clear, thoughtful, and timely defense of conclusions well worth pressing in the current philosophical climate. His discussion of the thesis that ‘good’ is attributive is one of the best available. And his development of this thesis with an eye on belief in God is just excellent. His book should be read by anyone with a serious interest in moral philosophy and/or philosophy of religion.” Brian Davies, Professor of Philosophy, Fordham University, USA Most contemporary versions of moral realism are beset with difficulties. Many of these difficulties arise because of a faulty conception of the nature of goodness. Goodness, God, and Evil lays out and defends a new version of moral realism that re-conceives the nature of goodness. DAVID E. Hell: Against Universalism Ioanna-Maria Love The notion that hell is everlasting and also a place of unending suffering inevitably gives rise to the following question for theists: how could an omnipotent, all-good and all-loving God allow anyone to suffer the torments of hell for eternity? The problem of hell is arguably the most severe form of the problem of evil because the evil found in hell is eternal with no possibility for redemption. Thus, the doctrine of hell gives rise to a moral problem caused by the apparent incompatibility between God’s goodness and everlasting torment in hell. There have been several attempts to shore up the doctrine of hell in the face of this problem.
