Power, Conflict and the Quest for Meaning
Interpreting the Bible in Film
Harry Freedman
Athalya Brenner-Idan, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
Bible translations underlie an astonishing number of religious conflicts that have plagued the world: religious establishments through the ages have railed against them; the Cathar Bible was banned; William Tyndale was forced to flee from England on the back of his Bible translation and so the story continues to the present day. In this deeply researched narrative history, Harry Freedman describes the passions and emotions that arise when deeply held religious convictions are threatened and tells of the struggle for authority and orthodoxy in a world where temporal power was always subjugated to the divine. A cutting-edge study of biblical influences on three films and one television series, namely: Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927), Pleasantville (Gary Ross, 1998), Dogville (Lars von Trier, 2003), and the television series Joan of Arcadia (Barbara Hall, NBC, 2003-2005). Brenner-Idan examines and reads these four ‘visual texts’ together and against each other in order to show what is common between them and to show how biblical tropes and themes are used in the telling of these stories. The Formation and Significance of the Christian Biblical Canon
Ecclesia and Ethics Moral Formation and the Church
A Study in Text, Ritual and Interpretation
Edited by Edward Allen Jones III, Corban University, USA, John Frederick, Janghoon Park, Eric Lewellen & John A. Dunne Ecclesia and Ethics considers Ecclesial Ethics within its theological, theoretical and exegetical contexts. Part one presents the biblical-theological foundations of an ecclesial ethic – examining issues such as creation, and Paul’s theology of the Cross. Part two moves on to examine issues of character formation and community. Finally, part three presents a range of exegetical applications. These essays look at hot-button issues such as the ‘virtual self’ in the digital age, economics, and attitudes to war. Bokedal examines the scribal nomina sacra convention, the codex format, oral and written Gospel, early Christian liturgical praxis and the Rule of Faith. The Pentateuch
Fragmented Women
A Social-Science Commentary
Feminist (Sub)versions of Biblical Narratives
John Van Seters, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA Is the Pentateuch an accumulation of folk traditions, a work of ancient historiography, a document legitimizing religious reform? In this magisterial account of the Pentateuch’s history John Van Seters argues that a proto-Pentateuchal author created a comprehensive history from Genesis to Numbers as a prologue to the Deuteronomistic History in the exilic period, later expanded by a Priestly writer into the foundational document of the Jerusalem temple community. For this Cornerstones edition the author has revised several sections, updating and integrating new bibliographical items, and refining the text where necessary. The Israelite Woman
In Search of 'Ancient Israel'
Social Role and Literary Type in Biblical Narrative
A Study in Biblical Origins
Athalya Brenner-Idan, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands 'No less than a methodological revolution.' Carole Fontaine, Andover Newton Theological School, USA The first edition of The Israelite Woman offered the first book-length treatment by a feminist biblical scholar of the female characters in the Hebrew Bible. Now, thirty years later, Brenner-Idan provides a fresh take on this ground-breaking work in a new introduction which considers how scholarly observation of female biblical characters has changed and how it has not. Not only is the book a highly valuable resource detailing the social role of women in ancient Israel, but it is also a challenging reminder of how outdated attitudes can still prevail. Philip R. Davies, University of Sheffield, UK 'This new edition of In Search of 'Ancient Israel' is more than welcome, because the questions that Davies raises in this groundbreaking work are still highly topical. He brilliantly challenges what has been for a long time a scholarly consensus about the origins of 'biblical Israel' and its sacred texts... a must-read for every student and scholar of Hebrew Bible.' - Thomas Romer, University of Lausanne, Switzerland A classic in which Philip Davies outlines the history of Israel and its literature. Ancient Israel
The History of Ancient Israel: A Guide for the Perplexed
A New History of Israel
Philip R. Davies, University of Sheffield, UK
Niels Peter Lemche, University of Copenhagen, Denmark 'An excellent foundation for historical research into the Hebrew Bible.' - Philip R. Davies, University of Sheffield, UK
'A splendid guide to studying the history of ancient Israel' - Lester L. Grabbe, University of Hull, UK
When this provocative text was first published, Lemche presented a new model of how we should understand Israelite society, its history and its religion. Lemche’s radical reassessment of Israelite history is based on the conviction that the Old Testament contains hardly any historical sources older than the seventh century BCE. The early history of Israel must therefore be reconstructed from non-biblical evidence, not from the Old Testament. In this Cornerstones edition Lemche provides an extensive new introduction and bibliography.
In this guide Davies outlines the sources available and the issues facing historians. He then examines the theories and hypotheses that scholars have advanced throughout history, including the rise and fall of Biblical Archaeology, and the ‘maximalist/minimalist’ debate. Following this historiographical survey, Davies introduces current trends in biblical scholarship, covering cultural memory, literary and social-scientific theory, and 'invented history'. Finally, Davies considers the big question: how the sources can be combined to write a modern history that incorporates all the data available, in a meaningful way.

The Anthropomorphic God in the Old Testament
History, Story, Theology
Andreas Wagner, University of Bern, Switzerland
'An excellent introduction' - John Barton, University of Oxford, UK
'In this eminently readable and engaging work Wagner offers to a wide audience an informed overview of Israelite reflections on divine embodiment within the context of ancient Near Eastern religions' - Review of Biblical Literature Images of the body in ancient civilizations are radically different from body images today. This has significant consequences for our understanding of the biblical notion of God’s human shape; there are bound to be misconceptions. Wagner illuminates these misconceptions, and reveals the distant world of ancient body images. 'One of the most creative and innovative books about Paul I have ever read.' - N. T. Wright, University of St Andrews, UK
In this study Watson views Paul and his Jewish contemporaries as, above all, readers of scripture. Contrary to the view that these early readers merely imposed their own pre-existing viewpoints on scriptural texts, he shows that they were profoundly engaged in fundamental hermeneutical issues. For this Cornerstones edition Watson responds to his critics in a comprehensive new introduction. Other updates and refinements have been made throughout the text. Horrell reads New Testament texts with an explicit awareness of contemporary ethical theory, and assesses Paul's contribution as a moral thinker in the context of modern debate. One God, One Lord Early Christian Devotion and Ancient Jewish Monotheism Larry W. Hurtado, University of Edinburgh, UK
William Horbury considers the issue of messianism in Jewish and Christian tradition. Whilst Horbury’s primary focus is the Herodian period and the New Testament, he presents a broader historical trajectory, looking back to the Apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, and onward to the Roman empire. Horbury treats such central themes as the son of man and Pauline hopes for a new Jerusalem, and Jewish and Christian messianism in the second century. This Cornerstones edition features a new introduction which updates the volume within the context of current scholarship.
Larry Hurtado's One God, One Lord has been described as 'one of the most important and provocative Christologies of all time' (Alan F. Segal). Hurtado examines the early cultic devotion to Jesus through a range of Jewish sources, outlining an early 'high' Christological theology and showing how the Christ of faith emerges from monotheistic Judaism. In this new Cornerstones edition Hurtado provides a substantial epilogue which brings this ground-breaking work to the fore once more.

Resurrection: A Guide for the Perplexed Lidija Novakovic, Baylor University, USA Jesus' resurrection has no analogy in human history. Novakovic examines what the followers of Jesus meant when they declared that he was raised from the dead. This claim, which lies at the core of Christian faith, is one of the most controversial topics in Christianity. Novakovic discusses the nature of literary evidence, the historicity of Jesus’ resurrection and its theological significance. She focuses on the primary evidence and identifies the key issues in scholarly debates; and offers a clear and concise guide to a complicated and highly controversial topic.

An Introduction to the Study of Luke-Acts V. George Shillington, Canadian Mennonite University, Canada 'This book should feature on any reading list for undergraduate New Testament courses' - Philip Esler, University of Gloucestershire, UK V. George Shillington introduces readers to the text, texture and context of Luke-Acts in this tried and tested introduction, now in its second edition. Shillington looks at and explains questions of authorship, composition and historical background. A social-science approach sheds light on the society and culture of the time. The Old Testament in the New: An Introduction Second Edition: Revised and Expanded
Edward Adams, King's College London, UK 'Essential reading for students and scholars of the social history of early Christianity... highly recommended.' - Religious Studies Review Adams re-examines the New Testament and other literary data, as well as archaeological and comparative evidence, showing that explicit evidence for assembling in houses is not nearly as extensive as is usually thought. He also shows that there is literary and archaeological evidence for meeting in nonhouse settings. Adams makes the case that during the first two centuries, the alleged period of the ‘house church’, it is plausible to imagine the early Christians gathering in a range of different venues. The Body as Property
The Ammonites
Physical Disfigurement in Biblical Law
Elites, Empires, and Sociopolitical Change (1000-500 BCE)
Sandra Jacobs, King's College London, UK 'Succeeds in shedding light on a fascinating topic.' - Journal of Theological Studies
Craig W. Tyson, D'Youville College, USA
The Body As Property indicates that physical disfigurement functioned in biblical law to verify legal property acquisition. This is primarily substantiated in the accounts of prescriptive disfigurements: namely circumcision and the piercing of a slave's ear. It is further argued that legal entitlement was relevant also to the punitive disfigurements recorded in Exodus 21:22-24, and Deuteronomy 25:11-12, where the physical violation of women was of concern solely as an infringement of male property rights.
This book investigates the archaeological, epigraphic, and biblical evidence for the course of Ammon's history, setting it squarely within the context of ancient Near Eastern imperialism. Tyson elucidates the dynamic processes by which the local Ammonite elite made the cousins of biblical Israel visible to history. Tyson explains changes in the region of Ammon during the Iron Age II, namely the increasing numbers of locally produced elite items as well as imports, growth in the use of writing, and larger numbers of sedentary settlements.

The Reformed David(s) and the Question of Resistance to Tyranny Reading the Bible in the 16th and 17th Centuries Nevada Levi DeLapp DeLapp uses a test case for observing how both socio-historical and textual factors play a part in how a person reads a biblical text. Using a reception-historical methodology, he surveys five Reformed authors and their readings of the David and Saul story (primarily 1 Sam 24 and 26). From this survey DeLapp shows how authors are influenced both by their socio-historical contexts and by the shape of the biblical text itself. The Bible, Gender, and Reception History: The Case of Job's Wife Katherine Low, Mary Baldwin College, USA This book investigates the fleeting appearance in the Bible of Job's wife and its impact on the imaginations of readers throughout history. Low begins by presenting key interpretive gaps in the biblical text concerning Job and his wife. Low explains the way gender studies offers guiding principles with which she engages a reception history of Job's marriage. In the exploration of societal portrayals of Job and his Wife throughout history, Low discovers how arguments about marriage intertwine with not only gender roles, but also, with political, social, and historical movements. The Artistic Dimension
First-degree incest and the Hebrew Bible
Literary Explorations of the Hebrew Bible
Johanna Stiebert, University of Leeds, UK
Keith Bodner, Crandall University, Canada
Johanna Stiebert here discusses all overt and covert first-degree incest relations in the Hebrew Bible. Stiebert navigates not only the incest laws of Leviticus and the narratives of Lot and his daughters and of Amnon and Tamar but also pursues subtler intimations of incest, such as between Adam and his (absent but arguably implied) mother, and Ham and Noah. In pursuing the psychosocial values that may be drawn from the Hebrew Bible regarding first-degree incest, Stiebert thoroughly reviews incest studies from the early twentieth century onwards and explains and assesses the contribution of recent approaches from queer and post-feminist perspectives. Heroines, Heroes and Deity Wisdom Intoned
Three Narratives of the Biblical Heroic Tradition
A Reappraisal of the Genre 'Wisdom Psalms'
Dolores G. Kamrada, Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Hungary
Simon Chi-Chung Cheung, China Graduate School of Theology, China It has been hard to categorise and identify the ‘Wisdom psalms’ within the Psalter. Cheung reexamines the issues at stake in identifying this group of psalms in order to better describe the configuration of this psalmic genre. With the aid of the concepts of ‘family resemblance’ and ‘prototypes’, Cheung proposes to define ‘wisdom psalms’ as a psalm family which is characterised by a wisdom-oriented constellation of its generic features. Three such features are identified and put to test in an extensive study of seven psalms (37, 49, 73, 128, 32, 39, and 19). From Creation to Babel: Studies in Genesis 1-11 John Day, University of Oxford, UK John Day considers the background to Genesis 1-11. Amongst the topics included are the Priestly Creation narrative, the interpretation of the Garden of Eden story, Cain and the Kenites, the strange stories of the sons of God and daughters of men, Noah's drunkenness and the curse of Canaan, the background of the Flood story, and the meaning of the story of the tower and city of Babel. In this volume Keith Bodner aims at further integration of literary analysis in the study of the Hebrew Bible. In three sections, Bodner studies a range of texts in order to illustrate that literary analysis has value for exploring numerous issues in the discipline, including text-critical problems, the Deuteronomistic History, and Chronicles. Bodner petitions for a heightened awareness of the artistic achievement of the Hebrew Bible and illustrates that literary thinking is a necessary component for biblical interpretation.
The study analyses three narratives concerning the greatest heroic figures of the biblical tradition: Jephthah's daughter, Samson and Saul. Texts about King David are also considered. Kamrada concludes that Jephthah's daughter and Samson represent the pinnacle of female and male heroism respectively, and they achieve super-human status by offering their lives to the deity, thus entering the sphere of holiness. Saul's downfall is shown as exemplary of that of a great hero, and David is shown as an astute hero, who founds a lasting dynasty, thus drawing the heroic era in the Deuteronomistic history to a close. Theological Interpretation and Isaiah 53 A Critical Comparison of Bernhard Duhm, Brevard Childs, and Alec Motyer Charles E. Shepherd, Durham University, UK This study brings together the hermeneutical approaches of three Old Testament scholars (Bernhard Duhm, Brevard Childs, Alec Moyter), specifically as they pertain to the interpretation of Isaiah 52.13-53.12 in the framework of Christian theology. Following a summary and critical engagement of each interpreter on his own terms, the study analyzes the use of rhetoric behind the respective readings of Isaiah 53, and proposes theological reading as a highly eclectic undertaking, distanced from the demarcations of ‘pre-critical’, ‘critical’, and ‘post-critical’. Juxtaposition and the Elisha Cycle Rachelle Gilmour, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel Rachelle Gilmour examines the juxtaposition of narrative units in biblical literature and the effect this has on interpretation. Working from a theoretical basis established in the first half of the book Gilmour considers the Elisha cycle. Each episode is interpreted independently and then read in juxtaposition with the surrounding episodes, producing a fresh literary reading. Furthermore, in order to demonstrate how juxtaposition functioned as a diachronic process, attention is given to the literary history of the cycle. Finally, the Elisha cycle is itself read alongside other narratives to suggest the meaning of the cycle within Kings as a whole. Monotheism and Yahweh's Appropriation of Baal James S. Anderson This study identifies five main stages on Israel’s journey towards monotheism. Rather than deciding whether Yahweh was originally a god of the Baaltype or of the El-type, this work shuns origins and focuses instead on the first period for which there are abundant sources, the Omride era. Non-biblical sources depict a significantly different situation from the Baalism the Elijah cycle ascribes to King Achab. The novelty of the present study is to take this paradox seriously and identify the Omride dynasty as the first stage in the rise of Yahweh as the main god of Israel. Was Noah Good? Finding Favour in the Flood Narrative
Leshon Limmudim
Carol M. Kaminski, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, USA
Essays on the Language and Literature of the Hebrew Bible in Honour of A.A. Macintosh
The juxtaposition of 'favour' and 'righteousness' in the flood narrative raises an interpretative and theological problem: Is Noah chosen because of divine favour or because of his piety? Source-critical scholars identify two different theologies by J and P: J understands Noah's election as an act of grace whereas P emphasizes Noah's righteousness. Kaminski argues against the commonly held view that Noah finds favour because he is righteous, and seeks to demonstrate that divine favour is unmerited in accordance with the theme of grace in the primaeval history and in Genesis as a whole. Zechariah’s Vision Report and Its Earliest Interpreters
Reading Ruth in the Restoration Period
A Redaction-Critical Study of Zechariah 1-8
A Call for Inclusion
Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer, University of Aberdeen, UK Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer builds on the work done in her previous book Zechariah and His Visions (Bloomsbury-T&T Clark, 2014), to demonstrate that the visionary material in Zechariah forms the primary textual layer. The oracular texts constitute chronologically later interpretations. Zechariah and/or later authors/editors sought guidance in the earlier vision accounts, and the oracular material reflects these endeavours. Tiemeyer’s investigation is guided by the question: what is the latter material doing with the former? Is it enforcing, contradicting, or adding to it?
With an eclectic approach drawing on traditional exegesis, analysis of inner-biblical allusions, comparisons of legal and linguistic data, and modern refugee research, Edward Allen Jones III argues that Ruth is best understood as a call for an inclusive attitude toward any Jew or Gentile who desired to join the Judean community in the early Post-Exilic period. Though certain segments of the Judean community sought to purify their nation by expelling foreign elements in the Restoration period, Yhwh’s loving-kindness in Ruth’s life demonstrates his willingness to use any person to build up his people.

'Sit At My Right Hand'
Daniel Evokes Isaiah
The Chronicler's Portrait of the Tribe of Benjamin in the Social Context of Yehud
Allusive Characterization of Foreign Rule in the Hebrew-Aramaic Book of Daniel
Benjamin D. Giffone, LCC International University, Lithuania
G. Brooke Lester, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, USA
Benjamin is portrayed in Chronicles differently from how he is portrayed in the Deuteronomic History. In the latter, Benjamin's relation to Judah is shown as varied and complex, incorporating both highs and lows. The Chronicler, by contrast, smooths over these difficulties by emphasizing the historically close relationship between the two tribes. Benjamin Giffone sees in this evidence that the JudahBenjamin relationship reflects the socio-political situation of late Persian Yehud, and from this draws conclusions about the purpose and composition of Chronicles. Worlds that Could Not Be Utopia in Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah Edited by Frauke Uhlenbruch & Steven J. Schweitzer, Bethany Theological Seminary, USA Contributors to this volume consider whether there are proto-utopian elements in the three books from the Hebrew Bible. The essays evaluate the potential, and pitfalls, of reading Biblical books as (proto-)utopian. Topics include how utopia construct intricate counter-realities, and how to tell whether a proposal diagnosed as 'utopian' from a modern point of view is meant to motivate its audience to political action. Case studies which read aspects of Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah as potential utopian traits include the restoration project of EzraNehemiah and the rejection of foreign wives, and consideration of King Solomon as a utopian fantasy-king. Edward Allen Jones III, Corban University, USA
Lester argues here that the book of Daniel contains a complex but poetically unified narrative. This can be identified through certain narrative qualities, including the allusion to Isaiah throughout, particularly with respect to Isaiah’s depiction of Assyria. Lester shows that an allusive poetics can be investigated as an intentional rhetorical trope in a work for which the concept of ‘author’ is complex. The ‘Daniel’ resulting from this inquiry depicts Daniel’s 2nd-century Jewish reader not as suffering punishment for breaking covenant with God, but as enduring in covenant faithfulness the last days of the ‘Assyrian’ arrogator’s violent excesses. 'I Lifted My Eyes and Saw' Reading Dream and Vision Reports in the Hebrew Bible Edited by Elizabeth R. Hayes, Fuller Theological Seminary, USA & Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer, University of Aberdeen, UK The contributors to this volume explore the exegetical, rhetorical, and structural aspects of vision and dream accounts in the Hebrew Bible. Several contributors employ a diachronic approach as they explore the textual relationship between vision reports and the oracular material. Others focus on the rhetorical aspects of vision reports in their final form and discuss why vision reporting may be used to convey a message. Another approach employed looks at reception history and investigates how this type of text has been understood by past exegetes. Messianic Expectation in Book V of the Psalter
Reconfiguring Israel in Ruth, Esther and Judith
Michael K. Snearly, Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, USA
Anne-Mareike Wetter, Leiden Institute for Area Studies, Netherlands
Snearly employs the editorial-critical method used by David M. Howard, Jr. in The Structure of Psalms 93-100 as well as recent insights from the fields of poetics and text-linguistics in order to establish a linguistically based foundation for reading the Psalter as a unified text. The methodology emphasizes parallel features, with special focus on key-word links to show that each psalm group of Book V of the Psalter is organized around a theme or key word that is related to the royal/Davidic hope in the earlier sections of the Psalter. Thus, Snearly demonstrates the cohesive structure of the whole Psalter. Covenant Continuity and Fidelity A Study of Inner-Biblical Allusion and Exegesis in Malachi Jonathan Gibson, Cambridge Presbyterian Church, UK Gibson investigates how Malachi’s inner-biblical interpretation of earlier source texts in the Hebrew Bible informs and shapes his central theme of covenant. The mention of people, nations and places, Deuteronomic terminology, and rare words and unique word/root combinations exclusive to Malachi and only a few other texts encourages the book to be read in the context of received biblical traditions and texts. Through studying these Gibson reveals how Malachi’s connections to earlier source texts are neither random nor causal; rather, they have been strategically employed to inform and shape his central theme of covenant continuity and fidelity. Why?... How Long? Studies on Voice(s) of Lamentation Rooted in Biblical Hebrew Poetry Edited by LeAnn Snow Flesher, American Baptist Seminary of the West, USA, Carol J. Dempsey, University of Portland, USA & Mark J. Boda, McMaster Divinity College, Canada The two parts to this volume: 1) provide fresh readings of familiar texts as they are read through the lens of lamentation, and 2) deepen our understanding of Israel and God as lamenter and lamentee. In the second section the focus on topics such as Israel's 'unbelieving faith' (i.e., strong accusations against the God on whom they have complete reliance and trust), the unrighteous lamenter, and God's acceptance and rejection of the people's lament(s), deepens our understanding of Israel's culture and practice of lamentation. Anne-Mareike Wetter investigates how the books of Ruth, Esther and Judith contribute to the discussion about Israel’s ethnic and religious identity in the formative period following the Babylonian Exile. Wetter argues for a revisioning of Israel in and through the bodies of the three female characters, as a community which is simultaneously vulnerable and inviolable, marginalized and empowered. Their tricksterism, in all its comicality, underlines the precarious situation in which the women and the community they represent are caught. Yet it also has the power to both defeat threats from outside and amend Israel’s selfperception on the inside. Perspectives on Israelite Wisdom Proceedings of the Oxford Old Testament Seminar John Jarick, University of Oxford, UK This volume presents an examination of the wisdom traditions of the Old Testament from a variety of angles. The slipperiness of the concept of ‘wisdom literature’, the transmission of ‘wise’ advice for living, rabbinic and patristic approaches to the Bible’s wisdom traditions, and cutting-edge modern perspectives on such Old Testament books as Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes are all to be found here. The Body in Biblical, Christian and Jewish Texts Edited by Joan E. Taylor, King's College London, UK 'Not only an important volume, but also an enjoyable read' - Review of Biblical Literature The body is an entity on which religious ideology is printed. Thus it is frequently a subject of interest, anxiety, prescription and regulation in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, and related writings. Issues such as the body's age, purity, sickness, ability, gender, sexual actions, marking, clothing, modesty or placement can revolve around what the body is and is not supposed to be or do. This volume comprises a range of interdisciplinary and creative explorations of the body as it is described and defined in religious literature. The Seleucid and Hasmonean Periods and the Apocalyptic Worldview Edited by Lester L. Grabbe, University of Hull, UK, Gabriele Boccaccini, University of Michigan, USA & Jason M. Zurawski, University of Michigan, USA This tightly focused collection of essays, from an invited seminar of international specialists, centres on the question of the apocalyptic worldview around the time of the Maccabean revolt. What is the nature of apocalyptic at this time? Did the Maccabees themselves have an apocalyptic worldview? Who of the various groups held such a view? What are the characteristics of the apocalypses and related literature in this period? Did the apocalyptic worldview itself give rise to historical events or at least influence them? The New Jerusalem Texts Lorenzo DiTommaso, Concordia University, Canada This book examines the New Jerusalem Text and other Dead Sea writings that envision a New Jerusalem, and situates them within their larger literary and eschatological contexts. The first part of the book describes the discovery of the New Jerusalem text and its editions and translations; its seven manuscript copies and their overlaps; its distinctive content, with special attention to its genre and antecedents; and its date and provenance. This is followed by a presentation of other Dead Sea texts and apocalpytic writings. Phinehas, the Sons of Zadok, and Melchizedek Priestly Covenant in Late Second Temple Texts Dongshin Don Chang, Trinity Western University, Canada Dongshin Chang examines 1 and 2 Maccabees, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Hebrews to see how the combined concepts of covenant and priesthood are defined and interlinked within various biblical and extra-biblical traditions. The three studies show the interesting and varying dynamics of the use of combined concepts of covenant and priesthood. The articulations of the two entities are shown to reflect, in part, the concern of the Second Temple Jewish authors; how significant the priestly institutions and priesthood were, not only in cultic matters, but also in relation to political and authoritative concerns. Composite Citations in Antiquity Volume One: Jewish, Graeco-Roman, and Early Christian Uses Edited by Sean A. Adams, University of Glasgow, UK & Seth M. Ehorn, Wheaton College, USA An evaluation of the use of composite citations in Early Jewish, Greco-Roman, and Early Christian authors. The contributors to this volume seek to address specific issues, such as whether the quoting author created the composite text or found it already constructed as such. The essays also cover an exploration of the rhetorical and/or literary impact of the quotation in its present textual location, and the question of whether the intended audiences would have recognised and ‘reverse engineered’ the composite citation and as a result engaged with the original context of each of the component parts. The Ending of the Canon A Canonical and Intertextual Reading of Revelation 21-22 Külli Tõniste, Roberts Wesleyan College, USA Toniste develops an approach that respects Revelation as a part of Christian scripture composed by and for the church, whilst simultaneously making use of respected modern academic methods that support unity (literary, canonical, and narrative criticism, intertextuality, and canonical location) to arrive at theologically sensible and satisfying interpretations. Toniste shows how the basic key to unlocking the mysteries of Revelation lies in its abundant use of intertextuality, an area that remains still under-researched. This integrated methodology is explored through a reading of Revelation 21-22. Harnessing Chaos The Bible in English Political Discourse since 1968 James G. Crossley, St Mary's University, Twickenham, UK Harnessing Chaos is an explanation of changes in dominant politicized assumptions about what the Bible ‘really means’ in English culture since the 1960s. James G. Crossley looks at how the social upheavals of the 1960s, and the economic shift from the post-war dominance of Keynesianism to the post-1970s dominance of neoliberalism, brought about certain emphases and nuances in the ways in which the Bible is popularly understood. Crossley charts the decline of politically radical biblical interpretation and the victory of Margaret Thatcher’s re-reading of the liberal Bible tradition, following the normalisation of (a modified form of) Thatcherism more generally. Luke's Literary Creativity Edited by Mogens Müller, University of Copenhagen, Denmark & Jesper Tang Nielsen, University of Copenhagen, Denmark A combination of two classic discussions in New Testament scholarship, the contributions in this volume shed light on the still unsolved synoptic problem by using the well-coined concept of rewriting to describe the relationship between the synoptic gospels. The contributions work with the hypothesis that the synoptic tradition can be conceived of as a process of rewriting: Matthew rewrote Mark and Luke rewrote Mark and Matthew. This approach to the synoptic problem dismantles the grounds for the otherwise widely accepted two-source theory. If it can be shown that Luke knew Matthew’s Gospel the Q-hypothesis is superfluous. Structuring Early Christian Memory: Jesus in Tradition, Performance and Text Rafael Rodriguez, Johnson University, USA 'A fresh perspective that deserves careful attention.' - The Journal for the Study of the New Testament Social memory research has complicated the relationship between past and present because it is a relationship which finds expression in memorial acts such as storytelling and text-production. This complication directly affects the procedures and products of 'historical Jesus' research, which depends particularly on the assumption that we can cleanly separate 'authentic' from 'inauthentic' traditions. Rafael Rodriguez analyzes the problems that arise from this assumption and proposes a 'historical Jesus' program that is more sensitive to the entanglement of past and present. You Are My Son The Family of God in the Epistle to the Hebrews Amy L. B. Peeler, Princeton Theological Seminary, USA The author of Hebrews calls God 'Father' only twice in his sermon. This fact could account for scholarship's lack of attention to the familial dynamics that run throughout the letter. Peeler argues that by having God articulate his identity as Father through speaking Israel's Scriptures at the very beginning and near the end of his sermon, the author sets a familial framework around his entire exhortation. The author enriches the picture of God's family by continually portraying Jesus as God's Son, the audience as God's many sons, the blessings God bestows as inheritance, and the trials God allows as pedagogy. Jason A. Whitlark, Baylor University, USA In this book Whitlark argues that Hebrews engages both the negative pressures (persecution) and positive attractions (honor/prosperity) of its audience’s Roman imperial context. Consequently, the audience of Hebrews appears to be in danger of defecting to the pagan imperial context. Whitlark examines Hebrews’s figured response to the imperial hopes boasted by Rome along with Rome’s claim to eternal rule, to the power of life and death, and to be led by the true, victorious ruler. Whitlark concludes that Hebrews functions much like Revelation, that is, to resist the draw of the Christians' Roman imperial context. Text, Context and the Johannine Community A Sociolinguistic Analysis of the Johannine Writings David A. Lamb, University of Manchester, UK David A. Lamb adopts a new approach to the social context of the Johannine writings by drawing on modern sociolinguistic theory. Sociolinguistics emphasizes language as a social phenomenon, which can be analysed with reference not only to its broad context of culture, but also, through the use of register analysis, to its narrower context of situation. Lamb compares selected 'narrative asides' from the Gospel of John with a passage section from 1 John and with the two shorter Johannine Epistles. He concludes that register analysis of these texts does not support the idea of a close-knit sectarian group. Adesola Joan Akala Akala examines Johannine symbolism within the lens of Jesus’ relationship with the Father. After demonstrating that the Gospel narrative symbolically portrays Jesus as the Son of God who is relationally inseparable from his Father, Akala shows how the Son-Father Relationship (SFR) is at the center of the Christological symbols in the Gospel. She then traces the introduction of the SFR in the Prologue (Jn. 1. 1-18), its development through the words and actions of Jesus’ teaching ministry within the Johannine narrative, its culmination in the Prayer (Jn. 17); and its conclusion in the remainder of the Gospel. The Elijah-Elisha Narrative in the Composition of Luke Edited by John S. Kloppenborg, University of Toronto, Canada & Joseph Verheyden, KU Leuven, Belgium This collection examines the allusions to the ElijahElisha narrative in the gospel of Luke. The volume presents the case for a “maximalist” view, which holds that the Elijah-Elisha narrative had a dominant role in the composition of Luke 7 and 9. This is put forward by Thomas L. Brodie and John Shelton, with critical responses by Robert Derrenbacker, Alex Damm, F. Gerald Downing, David Peabody, Dennis MacDonald and Joseph Verheyden. The Biblical Tour of Hell Matthew Ryan Hauge, Azusa Pacific University, USA Hauge examines the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31, the only 'parable' that is set within a supernatural context. The parables characteristically feature concrete realities of first-century Mediterranean life, but the majority of Luke 16:19-31 is narrated from the perspective of the tormented dead. This volume demonstrates that the distinctive features of the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus are the result of a strategic imitation, creative transformation, and Christian transvaluation of the descent of Odysseus into the house of hades in Odyssey Book 11, the literary model par excellence of postmortem revelation in antiquity. Experiencing Irony in the First Gospel Suspense, Surprise and Curiosity Karl McDaniel Karl McDaniel explores ways in which the Gospel of Matthew elicits and develops the emotions of suspense, surprise, and curiosity within its readers. While Matthew 1:21 invites readers to expect Jewish salvation, progressive failure of the plot's main characters creates increasing suspense for the reader. How will Jesus save 'his people'? The commission to the Gentiles at the Gospel's conclusion provokes reader surprise, and the resulting curiosity calls readers back to the narrative's beginning. Upon rereading readers discover that the Gentile mission was foreshadowed throughout the narrative, and they are invited to partake in Jesus' final commission.

The Audience of Matthew An Appraisal of the Local Audience Thesis Cedric E. W. Vine, Newbold College, UK Cedric E. W. Vine suggests four critiques of the thesis that Matthew was written for a local audience or community. The first suggests the assumptions which underpin the text-focused process of identifying the Gospel’s audience lack clarity. The second suggests local audience readings necessarily exclude plot-related developments and are both selective and restrictive in their treatment of characterisation. The third argues that many in an audience of the Gospel would have incorporated Matthew within pre-existing mental representations shaped other early traditions. The fourth suggests that early Christian audiences were largely heterogeneous rendering the audience thesis meaningless. The Institutions of the Emerging Church Edited by Sven-Olav Back, Åbo Akademi University, Finland The contributors to this volume address the key institutions of the emerging Church, considering the development of rituals and sacraments, Church leadership, and the Church itself. The first part of the book deals with 'models' of the Church, that is, how the Church may be conceived of and described. The second part of the book looks at the offices of the Church: the Apostolate, the notion of Apostolic Tradition, and the development of religious authorities. Finally, part three looks at the sacraments, with in-depth consideration of the Eucharist, and of Baptistmal texts from the early Church. The Rhetoric of Response A Classical Rhetorical Reading of Hebrews 10:32-12:13 Lee Maxey, Corinthian Baptist Church, Des Moines, Iowa, USA The Rhetoric of Response is an interpretation of Hebrews 10.32-12.13 from the perspective of classical rhetorical compositional theory. Maxey argues that this unit in Hebrews is deliberative rhetoric advancing a set of four responses to a significant problem facing the community to which Hebrews is addressed. The responses - which ultimately aim to inspire members to continue in the faith of the community and to accept and weather sufferings occasioned by their faith - are accommodated by the following rhetorical structure, which conforms to the standard classical forensic/deliberative speech outline: (1) Exordium (10:32-34); (2) Confimatio (11:1-40); and (3) Concluiso (12:1-13). New Testament and the Church Edited by Peter Groves, University of Oxford, UK & John Barton, University of Oxford, UK John Barton and Peter Groves present a range of chapters by leading scholarly voices from the worlds of biblical studies and the Church, looking at the study of the New Testament within and around the Church and the impact it has had and can have on Christian theology. The essays in the volume adopt a style of critical engagement with biblical texts, through the prism of a modern and living Church. The focus of the volume is thus not only upon the New Testament itself, but also upon how reading the New Testament is important for dialogue within the Church. The Ritual World of Paul the Apostle Metaphysics, Community and Symbol in 1 Corinthians 11. 17-34 Michael Lakey, Ripon College Cuddesdon, UK Lakey explores the theological significance of the rituals of Baptism and the Lord's Supper in Pauline theology, with particular reference to 1 Corinthians 11:17ff. Lakey builds upon the insights of Clifford Geertz, by showing how for Paul Baptism and the Lord's Supper facilitated specific connections between his metaphysics on the one hand, and the form or pattern of life he enjoins upon his churches on the other. Lakey considers what Paul's underlying beliefs regarding these ritual events may have been, thereby setting the scene for a preliminary discussion of specific lines of post-interpretation in the early Patristic period. Ancient Education and Early Christianity Edited by Andrew W. Pitts, Arizona Christian University, USA & Matthew Ryan Hauge, Azusa Pacific University, USA What was the relationship of ancient education to early Christianity? This volume provides an in-depth look at different approaches currently employed by scholars who draw upon educational settings in the ancient world to inform their historical research in Christian origins. The book is divided into two sections: one consisting of essays on education in the ancient world, and one consisting of exegetical studies dealing with various passages where motifs emerging from ancient educational culture provide illumination. Where is the Wise Man? Graeco-Roman Education as a Background to the Divisions in 1 Corinthians 1-4 Adam G. White, Alphacrucis College, Australia The divisions in the Corinthian church are catalogued by Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:12: 'Each of you says, ‘I follow Paul,’ or ‘I follow Apollos,’ or ‘I follow Cephas,’ or ‘I follow Christ.’” White shows how these splits are found in the milieu of first-century GraecoRoman education. By consulting relevant literary and epigraphic evidence, White develops a picture of ancient education throughout the Empire generally, and in Roman Corinth specifically. This serves as a backdrop to the situation in the Christian community, wherein some members preferred Apollos to Paul as his teaching more closely resembled other teachers of higher studies. A Compositional Analysis of Angels in Matthew
Edited by Craig A. Evans, Acadia Divinity College, Canada & Jeremiah J. Johnston, Houston Baptist University, USA
Kristian A. Bendoraitis, Spring Arbor University, USA Utilizing the Old Testament and Second Temple sources Kristian Bendoraitis identifies how angel traditions are reflected in Matthew’s Gospel, resulting in a detailed exegesis of those passages which specifically mention angels. Bendoraitis analyses each passage in view of its role in the Gospel’s narrative and in light of Matthew’s redactional hand. In addition, each chapter is accompanied by a discussion of relevant traditions of angels in order to illustrate how Matthew’s use of angels has facilitated his Gospel’s message. Early Church Understandings of Jesus as the Female Divine The Scandal of the Scandal of Particularity Sally Douglas, University of Divinity, Australia Jesus’ status inflames debate. Central to debates is whether Jesus uniquely embodies the divine. What the debates often eclipse is the reality that in many of the earliest strands of the Christian tradition when Jesus’ divinity is proclaimed, Jesus is imaged as the female divine. Sally Douglas investigates these early texts, excavates the motivations for imaging Jesus as Woman Wisdom and the complex reasons that this began to be suppressed in the second and third centuries. The work concludes with an exploration of the potent implications of engaging with the ancient proclamation of Jesus-Woman Wisdom in contemporary context. Hebrews and Divine Speech Jonathan I. Griffiths, Proclamation Trust, UK The theme of divine speech appears at the opening of the Hebrews (1.1-2) and recurs throughout the book, often in contexts suggesting connections to other areas of scholarly interest (christology, soteriology, cosmology, and the writer’s understanding of the nature of his discourse). This study begins with a consideration of the genre and structure of Hebrews (offering a new structural outline), concluding that Hebrews constitutes the earliest extant complete Christian sermon and consists of a series of Scriptural expositions. The investigation then turns to consider Hebrews’ theology of divine speech through an exegetical analysis of eight key passages. Throughout it examines the widely held (but largely untested) assumption that logos and rhema function as key terms in the author’s presentation of divine speech.
Studies in Context and Intertextuality
This work critically engages the hermeneutical methods used to analyse the New Testament writings, so that the lenses through which studies of the texts have been traditionally viewed can be revised. Read separately, these articles provide fascinating insights and revisions to established ideas on intertextuality between the Old/Hebrew Bible and the New Testament writings. Taken together, the collection presents a solid argument for the fundamental revision of our current hermeneutical practice in Biblical Studies. Representations of the Afterlife in Luke-Acts Alexey Somov, St Philaret Orthodox Christian Institute, Russia Why does Luke speak about several different forms of the afterlife? Why is resurrection described as a person's transformation into an angelic being? How many abodes are appointed for the righteous and the wicked after death? Alexey Somov addresses these queries in relation to the apparent confusion and variety found in the text, in respect of the interrelatedness of these issues, and their connection with other eschatological issues in Luke-Acts, and in relation to the wider cultural context of the Mediterranean world to which Luke belonged.

Psalm 110 and the Logic of Hebrews Jared Compton, CrossWay Community Church, Bristol, Wisconsin, USA A neglected area of study of the letter to the Hebrews is the function of the Old Testament in the letter’s logic. Compton addresses this neglect by looking at two other ideas that have themselves received too little attention, namely (1) the unique and fundamental semantic contribution of Hebrews’ exposition (vis-àvis its exhortation) and (2) the prominence of Ps 110 in the author’s exposition. The conclusion becomes clear that Hebrews’ exposition— its theological argument—turns, in large part, on successive inferences drawn from Ps 110.1 and 4. The Quest for the Historical Jesus after the Demise of Authenticity Toward a Critical Realist Philosophy of History in Jesus Studies Jonathan Bernier, St. Francis Xavier University, Canada Presently Jesus scholarship is dominated not by the question 'Who was Jesus?' but rather 'How do we even go about answering the question, 'Who was Jesus?'?' With this current situation in mind, Jonathan Bernier undertakes a two-fold task: one, to engage on the level of the philosophy of history with existing approaches to the study of the historical Jesus, most notably the criteria approach and the social memory approach; two, to work with the critical realism developed by Bernard Lonergan in order to develop a philosophy of history that can elucidate current debates within historical Jesus studies. Illiterate Apostles Uneducated Early Christians and the Literates Who Loved Them Allen Hilton, Wayzata Community Church, Wayzata, Minnesota, USA Pagan critics ridiculed the early Christians for being uneducated. We know this, because a few Christians took up pen to defend the uneducated members of their churches. Peculiarly, though, in their ‘defence’ these authors openly admit that the critics have the facts on their side. The Book of Acts even calls two of its heroes, Peter and John, illiterates. Why did these authors, intent on presenting Christianity in a positive light, volunteer such a negative detail? The answer reveals a fascinating social exchange that surrounded education levels in antiquity and made its way into the New Testament Book of Acts.
Jesus and the Scriptures Problems, Passages and Patterns Edited by Tobias Hägerland, Lund University, Sweden The four Gospels unanimously present Jesus as someone who quoted from, commented on, and engaged with the Scriptures of Israel. Whether this portrayal goes back to the historical Jesus has been a hotly debated issue among scholars. In this book, eleven expert researchers from four different continents tackle the question anew. This is done through detailed study of specific themes and passages from the Scriptures which Jesus, according to the Gospels, quoted or alluded to. Creation Imagery in the Gospel of John Carlos Raul Sosa Siliezar, Central American Theological Seminary, Guatemala Sosa Siliezar investigates the presence and significance of creation imagery in the Gospel of John. He argues that John has intentionally included only a limited (albeit significant) number of instances of creation imagery and that he has positioned them carefully to highlight their significance. Sosa Siliezar contends that the instances of creation imagery function collectively in a threefold way. First, John uses them to portray Jesus in close relationship with his Father. Second, they assert the primal and universal significance of Jesus. Third, they link past reality with present and future reality, portraying Jesus as the agent of creation. The Figure of Abraham in John 8 Text and Intertext Ruth Sheridan, University of Newcastle, Australia Using methods derived from modern and postmodern literary criticism Ruth Sheridan examines textual allusions to the biblical figures of Cain and Abraham in John 8:1-59. She pays particular attention to how these allusions give shape to the Gospel's alleged and infamous anti-Judaism (exemplified in John 8:44). Moreover, Sheridan uniquely studies the subsequent reception in the Patristic and Rabbinic literature, not only of John 8, but also of the figures of Cain and Abraham. Sheridan shows how these figures are linked in Christian and Jewish imagination in the formative centuries in which the two religions came into definition. People and Place: A Spatial Analysis of the Kingdom in Matthew Patrick Schreiner, Western Seminary, USA Patrick Schreiner conducts a spatial analysis of the Kingdom of God to show that Jesus’s purpose in Matthew is to reorder the space of the earth as the heavenly king. In the incarnation the barrier between heaven and earth is pierced and the spaces begin to collide in Jesus' ministry. Therefore, in Matthew, Jesus does not just promise a temporal or ethereal kingdom, but one that is located. Jesus is granted authority over this space and inspires people to follow him. The spatial kingdom begins in his body, and he extends it to his church by promising his continued presence. Beginning with the infancy narrative, Sarah Harris moves to later events portrayed in Jesus' ministry in which he is seen to enacts his message as God's faithful Davidic shepherd, in particular, the parable of the Lost Sheep and the Zaccheus pericope (19:1-10). Harris uses this latter encounter to underline her thesis that Jesus may be hailed as a King by the crowds as he enters Jerusalem, but he is not simply a king. Paul's Financial Policy A Socio-Theological Approach David E. Briones, Sterling College, USA David E. Chang examines the principle of 'the common advantage' and explores how the neglect and misunderstanding of this principle lay at the root of relational and societal breakdowns. Paradigms of Being in Christ A Study of the Epistle to the Philippians
Bowing before Christ - Nodding to the State?
Peter-Ben Smit, VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands
Reading Paul Politically with Oliver O'Donovan and John Howard Yoder
Smit's analysis combines observations on classical rhetoric, exegetical analyses of Philippians, and views from the perspective of gender and masculinity studies into a new and fresh analysis of the way Paul positions himself as an example of 'Being in Christ'. Smit shows that ancient ideals of deliberative rhetoric have influenced Philippians heavily, drawing examples from: Aristotle, Plutarch, and 2 Maccabees. This study both positions Paul in the cultural context of his day and indicates the newness of his enterprise. 'God is One'
Dorothea H. Bertschmann, University of Durham, UK Does Paul sponsor political conservatism? Bertschmann challenges this perception, arguing that Paul's political imagery, in particular the confession that 'Jesus Christ is Lord' directly challenges the Roman emperor. Bertschmann converses with the works of John Howard Yoder and Oliver O'Donovan in order to examine this idea. She argues that both thinkers wrestle with a similar difficulty: How can Christ the Lord be meaningfully related to earthly lords without betraying the otherness of Christ's Lordship? Bertschmann then specifically considers how Paul deals with this paraodox, suggesting that Paul keeps political rule at the peripheries, but does not entirely disconnect it. Paul's 'Spirit of Adoption' in its Roman Imperial Context Robert Brian Lewis, Manhattan College, USA Lewis examines Paul’s use of the phrase ‘Spirit of Adoption’ in Romans 8.12-17 against the background of its Roman Imperial context in order to shed light on interpretation of Paul's Letter to the Romans. Having examined theories for a possible Jewish antecedent for Paul’s use of this phrase, Lewis unlocks the data within the term's Roman Imperial context that significantly clarifies what Paul means when he uses the phrase. Lewis shows that when Paul wrote Romans, adoption had become a feature of Imperial succession. When Romans 8.12-17 is read against this background a very different exegetical picture emerges. Paul at the Crossroads of Cultures Theologizing in the Space Between Kathy Ehrensperger, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, UK Kathy Ehrensperger applies the paradigm of multilingualism, which includes the recognition of cultural distinctiveness, to the study of Paul. Paul’s role as apostle to the nations is seen as the role of a gobetween – as that of cultural translator. This role requires that he is fully embedded in his own tradition as well as able to appreciate and understand aspects of gentile culture. Paul’s theologizing in the space between the cultures thereby implies the task of negotiating the meaning of the Christ event in relation to, and in appreciation of both, Jewish and gentile identity. The Throne Motif in the Book of Revelation
Washings and Meals in Galatians and 1 Corinthians
Laszlo Gallusz, Belgrade Theological Seminary, Serbia
Stephen Richard Turley, Eastern University, USA The focus of this work is the two rituals that identified the Pauline communities: ritual washings and ritual meals. By exploring Paul’s references in Galatians and 1 Corinthians to ritual washings and meals with a heuristic use of ritual theory, Turley concludes that rituals in early Christianity were inherently revelatory, in that they revealed the dawning of the messianic age through the bodies of the ritual participants. This bodily revelation established both a distinctly Christian ethic and a distinctly Christian social space by which such an ethical identity might be identified and sustained. Thinking and Seeing with Women in Revelation Lynn R. Huber, Elon University, USA Lynn R. Huber argues that the visionary aspect of Revelation, with its use of metaphorical thinking and language, is the crux of the text's persuasive power. By drawing upon the work of medieval and modern visionaries, Huber answers a call to examine the way 'real' readers engage with biblical texts. Revealing how Revelation continues to persuade audiences through appeals to the visual and provocative imagery she offers a new sense of how the text metaphorical language simultaneously limits and invites new meaning, unfurling a range of interpretations. Attitudes to Gentiles in Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity Edited by David C. Sim, Australian Catholic University, Australia & James S. McLaren, Australian Catholic University, Australia This volume describes the attitudes towards Gentiles in both ancient Judaism and the early Christian tradition. In the Christian tradition, which began as a Jewish movement but developed quickly into a predominantly Gentile tradition, the role and status of Gentile believers in Jesus was always of crucial significance. Did Gentile believers need to convert to Judaism as an essential component of their affiliation with Jesus, or had the appearance of the messiah rendered such distinctions invalid? This volume assesses the wide variety of viewpoints in terms of attitudes towards Gentiles and the status and expectations of Gentiles in the church.
Gallusz argues that the throne motif constitutes the major interpretive key to the complex structure and theology of the book of Revelation. In the first part of the book, Gallusz examines the throne motif in the Old Testament, Jewish literature and Graeco-Roman sources. He moves on to look at the throne of God texts of Revelation (particularly chs. 4&5). Gallusz reveals how Revelation utilizes the throne motif as the central principle for conveying a theological message, since it appears as the focus of the author from the outset to the climax of the drama. Christ is God Over All Romans 9:5 in the context of Romans 9-11 George Carraway, Liberty University Online This book is written against the background of Christological scholarly thought since the publication of Kyrios Christos by Bousset. Carraway argues that the syntax of Romans 9:5 suggests Paul meant to refer to Jesus as God, and that his statement is not out of place at the beginning of Romans 9-11. Carraway argues that Romans 9-11 may be taken to link Paul's one God of both Jews and Gentiles in Romans 3 with the concept of the one Lord of all in Romans 10, and thus with Christ.

Bubbers, Center for Anglican Theology, Liturgy, and Spiritual Formation, USA This study examines the scriptural justification for believers to expect the Eucharist to be a place where God will come and bless them with freedom and formation. The Theological Role of Paradox in the Gospel of Mark Laura C. Sweat, Seattle Pacific University, USA Scholarship on the Gospel of Mark has long been convinced of the paradoxical description of two of its primary themes, christology and discipleship. This book argues that paradoxical language pervades the entire narrative, and that it serves a theological purpose in describing God's activity. Sweat argues that through paradoxical narrative, Mark emphasizes God's transcendence and presence, showing that even though Jesus has brought revelation, a complete understanding of God remains tantalizingly out of their grasp until the eschaton (ref Mk 4:22). The Protevangelium of James Volume 1: Greek Text, English Translation, Critical Introduction George T. Zervos, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, USA This is the first in a two-volume critical investigation of one of the earliest and most important of the New Testament Apocrypha, the Protevangelium of James (also known as the Infancy Gospel of James). Zervos challenges the prevailing view that the ProtJas is a second century unitary document, and finds instead that it is a product of an ongoing redactional process by which a first century CE ‘heretical' text was progressively conformed to the ‘orthodox' Christian doctrine of the time. Sacra Scriptura How "Non-Canonical" Texts Functioned in Early Judaism and Early Christianity Edited by James H. Charlesworth, Princeton Theological Seminary, USA & Lee Martin McDonald, Acadia Divinity College, Canada Many of the writings deemed 'apocryphal' and 'pseudepigraphical'were in circulation in the early centuries of Judaism and Christianity. Most of these ancient writings functioned, to some degree, as sacred texts or scripture—sacra scriptura—in the communities in which they were produced and in others to which they circulated. This volume focuses on how some of these forgotten voices were heard within numerous early religious communities, helping to remove the distressing silence in many areas of the ancient world. The Resurrection of Jesus in the Gospel of Peter A Tradition-Historical Study of the Akhmîm Gospel Fragment Jeremiah J. Johnston, Houston Baptist University, USA All four canonical gospels identify the resurrection of Jesus, yet none detail the exact moment of its happening. The absence of this narrative detail was hotly contested in the second century, when critics derided a resurrection account without credible witness. Thus, the discovery of the Akhmim fragment at the end of the 19th century, which purports to provide exactly that detail, is a huge and surprisingly under-utilised addition to Biblical scholarship of the Apocryphal gospels. Johnston examines the impact of this discovery, and argues for the dating of the fragment to the second century AD. Theology and the Future
Theology and Drama in the Work of Dorothy L. Sayers
Evangelical Assertions and Explorations
Frances Clemson, Durham University, UK
Edited by Trevor Cairney, University of New South Wales, Australia & David Starling, Morling College, Australia
Frances Clemson offers a critical analysis of Sayers' theology through close attention to her dramatic works and to the context in which they were first performed, arguing that Sayers' theology is most fully developed in and through her drama. Clemson also demonstrates how the theology instantiated in these works can reconfigure contemporary discussions about the relationship between theology and the arts. This volume represents a major contribution to the field of Sayers’ studies and argues that Sayers’ theology is most fully developed in and through her drama. David Nelson, Baker Academic and Brazos Press, USA & Charles Raith II, Baylor University, USA An introduction to the methods, achievements, and future prospects of the modern ecumenical movement. The volume defines ecumenism, a term that has long been a source of confusion for students of theology and church history. A concise review the chronology of the first century of the modern ecumenical movement is then offered, which highlights the major events, figures, accomplishments, and impasses. This is followed by critical examinations of several significant challenges for contemporary ecumenical theology and practice. The conclusion is a commentary upon the difficulties and prospects that the ecumenical movement might anticipate as it enters this new millennium. Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love Elizabeth A. Johnson, Fordham University, USA What value does the natural world have within the framework of religious belief? The crisis of biodiversity in our day, when species are going extinct at more than 1,000 times the natural rate, renders this question acutely important. In Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love, Professor of Theology Elizabeth A. Johnson explores the notion that love of the natural world is an intrinsic element of faith in God and that far from being an add-on, ecological care is at the centre of moral life. Theology was once 'queen of the sciences', the integrating centre of Christendom's conceptual universe. In our own time the very idea of systematic theology is frequently called into question, derided as an arcane and superstitious pseudo-discipline. Beginning with the question of God, this book explores what might be meant by 'the future of God', and what its implications are for Christian theology. The essays bring together a mix of specialist theologians and interdisciplinary thinkers to support the assertion that there can be no more critical endeavour to the future than understanding God and all things in relationship to him.

Purpose and Providence Taking Soundings in Western Thought, Literature and Theology Vernon White, Westminster Abbey, UK Do our lives have purpose? Despite the rise of secularism, we are still confronted by a sense of meaning and direction in the events of history and our own lives. Using the novels of Thomas Hardy and Julian Barnes, Vernon White tracks this belief in intellectual history and tests its resilience in modern literature. Both novelists portray modern and late-modern scenarios where the idea of an objective purpose has been deconstructed but it still haunts the protagonists. By engaging with Barth and Frei White suggests new ways of reimagining divine providence to take account of these issues. The Pursuit of the Soul Psychoanalysis, Soul-making and the Christian Tradition Peter Tyler, St Mary's University, Twickenham, UK One of the most striking features of contemporary psychology is the return of language of the 'soul' in contemporary discourse. Tyler investigates the origins and use of 'soul-language' in the Christian tradition before turning his attention to the evolution and preoccupations of modern psychoanalysis. He explores the dynamics of psychoanalysis as a 'tool to rediscover the soul' of the 21st century seeker. Central to his book is the perceived clash between analysis and the spiritual tradition. His uncompromising conclusion is that the dialogue of the two in our present time will have far-reaching repercussions for church, society and human well-being. Christian Reflections on the Philosophy of Medicine
New Studies in Bonhoeffer's Theology and Ethics
Andrew Sloane, University of New South Wales,
Medical and bioethical issues have spawned a great deal of debate in both public and academic contexts. Little has been done, however, to engage with the underlying issues of the nature of medicine and its role in human community. Andrew Sloane fills that gap by providing Christian philosophical and theological reflections on the nature and purposes of medicine, and its role in a Christian understanding of human society. Sloane provides Christians with a coherent and integrated understanding of medicine as a social practice which challenges assumptions about the nature of medicine. Edited by Philip G Ziegler, University of Aberdeen, UK & Michael Mawson, University of Aberdeen, UK Dietrich Bonhoeffer remains among the most widely read theologians in Europe, North America, and beyond. Many significant debates in contemporary theology have been in some way shaped by his provocative legacy. This volume directs and consolidates the work of some important scholars beginning to move in these new directions, it establishes a foundation for ongoing scholarship in theology and ethics engaging and drawing upon Bonhoeffer. Provides an important corrective work that has interpreted Bonhoeffer’s theology and legacy primarily through the lens of his life and practical involvement. The Seductiveness of Virtue Abraham Joshua Heschel and John Paul II on Morality and Personal Fulfilment John J. Fitzgerald, St. John's University, USA John J. Fitzgerald addresses here one of life's enduring questions - how to achieve personal fulfillment and whether we can do so through ethical conduct. He focuses on two significant 20th-century theologians: Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and Pope John Paul II, seeing both as fitting dialogue partners given the former's influence on the Second Vatican Council's deliberations on the Jews, and the latter's ground-breaking overtures to the Jews in the wake of his experiences in Poland before and during World War II. This volume is first book-length secondary source in the English language to explicitly examine Heschel’s ethical thoughts. The Unity of Scriptural and Philosophical Hermeneutics Joshua D. Broggi, University of Oxford, UK Heidegger and Gadamer are typically read by different theologians. Heidegger tends to be read by philosophical theologians examining his contribution to matters of doubt, existential finitude, and atheism. Gadamer tends to be read by those with an interest in interpreting the Bible, especially by those with more confessional or epistemically optimistic sensibilities. In both cases, Heidegger and Gadamer have well-established associations with specific theological positions. Joshua Broggi challenges this arrangement by re-reading the primary texts as theological resources; he defends an alternative theological appropriation of their philosophical work through a close engagement with portions of their argument. The Freedom to Become a Christian A Kierkegaardian Account of Human Transformation in Relationship with God Andrew B. Torrance, University of St Andrews, UK Torrance focuses on 'becoming a Christian' as a particular theological theme that deserves further attention how 'becoming a Christian' or Christian transformation should be construed in relation to God's initiating and active relationship to the person. Torrance's account of Kierkegaard on human transformation demonstrates in striking ways Kierkegaard's relevance to current issues in systematic theology and philosophical theology around the nature of Christian conversion, particularly how conversion might be re-conceptualized in strong divinely-relational and transformative rather than in progressive self-developmental terms. Between Humanist Philosophy and Apocalyptic Theology The Twentieth Century Journey of Samuel Stefan Osusky Paul R. Hinlicky, Roanoke College, USA Samuel Stefan Osusky was a leading intellectual in Slovak Lutheranism and a bishop in his church. In 1937 he delivered a prescient lecture to the assembled clergy, 'The Philosophy of Fascism, Bolshevism and Hitlerism', that clearly foretold the dark days ahead. Paul R. Hinlicky traces the intellectual journey with ethical idealism's faith in the progressive theology of history that ended in dismay and disillusionment at the revolutionary pretensions of Marxism-Leninism. Hinlicky shows Osusky's dramatic rediscovery of the apocalyptic 'the mother of Christian theology', and his input into the discussion of the dialectic of faith and reason after Rationalism and Fundamentalism. This volume offers an introduction to the work of one of the most important living French philosophers and brings a unique theological perspective to his philosophy.

Learning from the Past Essays on Reception, Catholicity, and Dialogue in Honour of Anthony N. S. Lane Edited by Jon Balserak, University of Bristol, UK & Richard Snoddy, London School of Theology, UK Two key ideas are here brought into clear focus. The first is the reception of the thought of earlier generations of biblical interpreters and theologians, a field which has been informed by work on Calvin's use of and relationship with the fathers and the medievals. The second broad theme is the exchange of ideas across confessional boundaries with essays offering analyses of occasions when individuals or groups have learned something important from, or made a determined effort to engage constructively with, other confessional identities and allegiances. The essays presented here shed light on the past and stimulate contemporary theological reflection. Schillebeeckx: A Guide for the Perplexed Stephan van Erp, KU Leuven, Belgium Edward Schillebeeckx (1914-2009) was a key figure in modern theology. As one of the editors of Concilium (with Karl Rahner) he was the advisor of the Dutch bishops at the Second Vatican Council and has been said to have influenced much of the content of the Council's documents. This introduction guides the reader through some of Schillebeeckx's key ideas. Stephan van Erp shows how Schillebeeckx linked history and tradition to new experiences and to the spirit of his own time and how, in doing so, Schillebeeckx innovated our understanding of Christ, faith and the Church. Edited by Myk Habets, Carey Baptist College, New Zealand The volume presents a range of theological standpoints regarding the filioque. With some contributors arguing for its retention and others for its removal, still others contest that its presence or otherwise in the Creed is not what is of central concern, but rather that how it should be understood is of ultimate importance. What contributors share is a commitment to interrogating and developing the central theological issues at stake in a consideration of the filioque, thus advancing ecumenical theology and inter-communal dialogue without diluting the discussion. Contributors span the Christian traditions: Roman Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, and Pentecostal. Sanctify them in the Truth Holiness Exemplified Stanley Hauerwas, Duke University, USA Hauerwas considers how theology and ethics interrelate, discusses the nature of sin, how any account of sin requires a more determinative account of moral law, the nature of sanctification, the body as a subject for Christian holiness, and the relationship between sanctification and truthfulness. The volume ends with sermons and this underlines Hauerwas’ point that the truth of the gospel cannot be discovered apart from its embodiment in specific communities of faith. The Christian Doctrine of God, One Being Three Persons
Divine Freedom and the Doctrine of the Immanent Trinity
Thomas F. Torrance
In Dialogue with Karl Barth and Contemporary Theology
A detailed study of the most profound article of the Christian faith - the Holy Trinity. Combining immense academic range with his characteristically fresh theological perspectives, Torrance builds a significant theological bridge between ancient and modern, as well as between the Roman and Protestant theology; he engages deeply with the Church Fathers and discusses the ontological nature of God. This Cornerstones edition includes a new introduction written by Professor Paul D. The Son of God Beyond the Flesh A Historical and Theological Study of the Extra Calvinisticum Andrew M. McGinnis The so-called extra Calvinisticum—the doctrine that the incarnate Son of God continued to exist beyond the flesh—was not invented by John Calvin or Reformed theologians. If this is true then why do scholars continue to fixate almost exclusively on Calvin when they discuss this doctrine? The answer to the “why” of this scholarly trend, however, is not as important as correcting the trend. McGinnis expands our vision of the historical functions and christological significance of this doctrine by expounding its uses in Cyril of Alexandria, Thomas Aquinas, Zacharias Ursinus, and in the work of theologians from the Reformation to the present. The book includes a brand new chapter titled 'Divine Freedom Revisited' which addresses those questions that have arisen in connection with Molnar's original presentation of the divine freedom. Paul D. Molnar re-visits here his discussion of the Logos Asarkos, the theologies of Karl Rahner and Wolfhart Pannenberg. Karl Barth on Prayer Ashley Cocksworth, The Queen's Foundation, UK Ashley Cocksworth presents Karl Barth as a theologian who not only produces a strong and vibrant theology of prayer, but also grounds theology itself in the practice of prayer. Prayer and theology are revealed to be integrally related in Barth's understanding of the dogmatic task. Through the theme of prayer fundamental questions are asked about the relation of human agency to divine agency as conceived by Barth, and new insights are offered into his understandings of the nature and task of theology, pneumatology, sin, baptism, religion, and sanctification. The result is a rich engagement with Barth's theology of prayer. Divine Simplicity A Dogmatic Account Steven J. Duby, Grand Canyon University, USA Steven J. Duby examines the doctrine of divine simplicity. This discussion is centred on the three distinguishing features: grounding in biblical exegesis, use of Thomas Aquinas and the Reformed Orthodox; and the writings of modern systematic and philosophical theologians. Duby outlines the general history of the Christian doctrine of divine simplicity and discusses the methodological traits and essential contents of the dogmatic account. This volume considers how simplicity is inferred from God's singularity and aseity, as well as how it is inferred from God's immutability and infinity, and the Christian doctrine of creation. The Dialectics of Creation Creation and the Creator in Edward Schillebeeckx and David Burrell Martin G. Poulsom, University of London, UK
The Swiss Reformed theologian Emil Brunner was one of the key figures in the early 20th century theological movement of Dialectical Theology. David Andrew Gilland offers an account of Bruner's earlier theology in relation to one of the central themes of the Protestant Reformation: Law and Gospel. He examines Brunner's early relationship with fellow Swiss Reformed theologian, Karl Barth and provides a detailed reading of a variety of Brunner's essays from the early to mid-1920s, centering on Brunner's efforts to use the LawGospel relationship to establish a basis for Christian theology.
This book investigates the philosophical components of Christian faith in creation, by analysing the distinction and the relation between creation and its Creator. The writings of Edward Schillebeeckx and David Burrell supply a terminology of distinction and relation that shapes the discourse, following in the footsteps of Aquinas. Poulsom's interpretation of Schillebeeckx enriches current approaches to this thinker and offers a significant contribution to thinking on the doctrine of Creation and issues surrounding the 'ontological distinction' which is of major concern in philosophical theology today.

Theological Anthropology: A Reader Edited by Marc Cortez, Wheaton College, USA & Michael P. Jensen, Moore Theological College, Australia What does it mean to be human and to be made in the image of God? What is a human being? Theologians have always been interested in the key issues surrounding the nature of the human person. Christian thinkers have always tried to answer anthropological questions: the body-soul relationship, gender, free will, the purpose of human life, and the relationship of the human person to the rest of creation. This reader guides the students through this difficult topic and the seven chapters each represent an in-depth treatment of a sub-topic within theological anthropology. Abraham Heschel and the Phenomenon of Piety Joseph Harp Britton, Yale University, USA Piety is often regarded with a pejorative bias: a 'pious' person is thought to be overly religious, supercilious even. For Abraham Heschel, piety describes the contours of a life compatible with God's presence. While much has been made of Heschel's concept of pathos, little attention has been given to the role of piety in his thought. Grounding Heschel's work in Husserl, Dilthey, Schiller and Heidegger, the book explores his phenomenological method of 'penetrating the consciousness of the pious person in order to perceive the divine reality behind it'. Did Jesus enjoy the beatific vision of God on earth that Christians hope to enjoy only in heaven? This important question is related to a whole series of questions about Jesus, his knowledge and selfconsciousness. Did he know he was God’s Son? What did he know of his saving mission? These issues are linked to a fundamental question: Is the Saviour we need one who is altogether like us or one who is in some ways unlike us? This book argues that God gave us a Saviour with beatific knowledge, and who in this respect is very unlike us indeed. Theological Investigations into the Concept of Immortality
John Webster, University of St Andrews, UK
Edited by Philip G. Ziegler, University of Aberdeen, UK How ought Christian faith and theology to understand the concept of human immortality today? And what, if anything, might be distinctively Christian about such a concept? The contributors to this volume explore how our thinking about the prospect of human immortality is decisively determined by what we receive of the limitless life of the triune God of the gospel, and how our understanding of immortality is made concrete by the Christian hope in 'the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting'. Theological Dialogue with Classical Pentecostals Challenges and Opportunities Jelle Creemers, Evangelical Theological Faculty, Belgium The last two decades have witnessed the growing participation in theological dialogues of noninstitutional (free church) movements. This poses a serious challenge to 21st century ecumenism, since ecclesial realities and internal diversity of these movements impede fruitful dialogue in the classical manner. The present volume addresses fundamental aspects of this challenge by a critical study of an exemplary case of such dialogues, the International Roman Catholic-Classical Pentecostal Dialogue (1972-2007). The Psychotheology of Sin and Salvation An Analysis of the Meaning of the Death of Christ in Light of the Psychoanalytical Reading of Paul Paul V. Axton, Central Christian College of the Bible, USA Through the employment of the work of Žižek and his engagement with Paul, Axton argues that the apostle in Romans 6-8 understands sin as a lie grounding the subject outside of Christ, and salvation is an exposure and displacement of this lie. The theological significance of Žižek is his demonstration of the nature of this lie and its description as he finds it in Romans 7. The specific overlap psychology and theology is found in the psychoanalytic understanding that the human Subject or the psyche is structured in three registers: the symbolic, the imaginary and the real. Great British Radicals Richard Turnbull, Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford, UK Society has much to learn from public figures of the last two centuries who identified themselves as Christians and whose faith inspired radical action. These range from the Earl of Shaftesbury through to Baroness Thatcher, including some diverse characters amongst them. Turnbull and Lee explore the interaction between some of these personalities, in the belief that faith matters, as does the example of character in persevering with often unpopular causes. This book brings back into the public square the faith-inspired origins of some of the most dramatic changes from the reforms of industrial Victorian England to the premiership of Thatcher. T&T Clark Companion to the Doctrine of Sin Edited by Keith L. Johnson, Wheaton College, USA & David Lauber, Wheaton College, USA This Companion examines the biblical and rabbinic accounts of sin, and provides accounts of sin and its effects offered by key theologians throughout Christian history. It explores debates surrounding the implications of sin for various doctrines, including God, creation, anthropology, and salvation. The book is comprised of 30 major essays that examine the key texts, figures, and debates relevant to the Christian tradition's discussion of the doctrine of sin. The Companion is unique in that every essay seeks to both appropriate and further stimulate the church's understanding of sin and its implications for the whole of the church's dogmatic tradition. The Freedom of a Christian Ethicist The Future of a Reformation Legacy Brian Brock, University of Aberdeen, UK The question of the fate of the decisive impulses of the Protestant Reformation in contemporary theology generally, and in theological ethics in particular, is a question of signal importance at the present time. Recent decades have witnessed significant changes in Protestant approaches to ethics. This collection of essays provides a series of scholarly reflections by high-profile theologians on the relevance of the Protestant Reformation and its legacy for contemporary theological ethics. It focuses on the significance of the Reformation and its legacy in Englishspeaking theology in recent decades.
