Why Visit America Matthew Baker A twisted, exhilarating and darkly strange vision of our time, explored in thirteen interconnected episodes
A
young man breaks the news to his family that he is going to transition from an analogue body to a digital existence. A man returns home after committing a great crime, his sentence being that his memory, and thereby his entire life, is wiped clean. The citizens of Plainfield, Texas, have had it with the United States. So they decide to secede, rename themselves America in memory of their former country, and set themselves up to receive tourists from their closest neighbour: America. The stories in Matthew Baker’s collection portray a world within touching distance of our own. This is an America riven by dilemmas confronting so many of us – from old age to consumerism, drugs to internet culture – turned on its head by one of the most darkly innovative and defiantly strange voices of the moment.

Outraged Why Everyone is Shouting and No One is Talking
Ashley ‘Dotty’ Charles An exploration of outrage in society and how it debases civil discourse from rising star of radio Ashley ‘Dotty’ Charles
W
e’re living in a postmodern utopia of sorts, where thanks to our resolute predecessors, we’ve checked a bunch of items off our outrage shopping list. Slavery? Abolished. Apartheid? Not any more, buddy. But what do you do when you keep winning your battles? Well, you pick new ones, of course. Ours is a society where many get by on provocation, the tactless but effective tool of pedalling outrage – and we all too quickly take the bait. If outrage has become abundant, activism has definitely become subdued.
09 JULY 2020 IMPRINT: BLOOMSBURY CIRCUS
There is still much to be outraged by in our final frontier – the gender pay gap, racial bias, gun control – but in order to enact change, we must learn to channel our responses. Passionate, funny and unrelentingly wise, this is the essential guide to living through the age of outrage.

The Book of Trespass Climbing the Fences that Divide England
Nick Hayes A journey across Britain through the eyes of a trespasser and a meditation on the fraught and complex relationship between land, politics and power
B
arbed wire across fields, padlocked gates, ‘trespassers will be prosecuted’ signs: Britain is a land of fences. Who owns these fences, and what does it mean if we cross them?
20 AUGUST 2020 IMPRINT: BLOOMSBURY CIRCUS HARDBACK / 9781526604699 / £16.99
In The Book of Trespass, Nick Hayes takes us on a journey of trespass across Britain. He jumps over walls at baronial estates, wanders into fenced-off ancient woodland, trespasses onto the Queen’s land at Windsor and pushes through barbed wire to access MoD property. Along the way he examines the social history of property, from the Norman Conquest to the enclosure acts and the privatisation of land. A fusion of psychogeography, history, politics and philosophy, fuelled by a gently anarchic spirit, The Book of Trespass is a powerful rumination on how fences represent the division in our society, but also cause it. Nick Hayes is an author, illustrator, printmaker, musician and political cartoonist. He has published four graphic novels and has worked for, among others, the Literary Review, Time Out, the British Council, the New Statesman and The Guardian. He has exhibited across the country, including at the Hayward Gallery. ‘There is no one like Nick Hayes at work today, fusing as he does dazzling artistic ability with a radical political sensibility, and a unique worldview. I see Nick as part of a new wave of multi-talented creative young people responding to questions of landscape in Britain today’ Robert Macfarlane

Walsh travelled from the raucous port of Karachi to the salons of Lahore, from Baluchistan to the mountains of Waziristan, meeting a diverse cast of extraordinary Pakistanis – a chieftain readying for war, a retired spy skulking through the borderlands, and a crusading lawyer risking death for her beliefs. Violent crime and murder are at historic levels; youth violence, knife crime, drug-related offending and gangs are out of control; social media and the internet provide safe havens for criminals to operate with impunity. Here, one of the UK’s leading criminal barristers provides an insider’s view of our fractured justice system, complete with fascinating cases, interviews and first-hand accounts. He travels the world to learn from different approaches to justice, from clinics for supervised drug use in Switzerland, to India, Scottish prisons and Alabama’s draconian penal system. With humane and pragmatic solutions for real change, this book goes beyond the ‘tough on crime’ rhetoric around law and order, offering a radical vision that could lead to the lowest crime rate on earth.

saac Matarasso was a Jewish doctor in Salonika (Thessaloniki) during the occupation of Greece by Nazi Germany. In this, his previously undiscovered memoir, he describes the degrees of tyranny under the Germans and the daily life of Salonika’s Jewish community.

To all intents and purposes the Jewish population of Salonika was eliminated by the Nazis – Matarasso fled to the mountains, but of the 93,000 Jews in Salonika, only 1,500 returned. His astonishing and ultimately hopeful book is, like those of Elie Wiesel and Némirovsky, a meditation on the human capacity for survival in the face of what seems like unendurable suffering. Isaac Matarasso was a doctor in Salonika during the Second World War and a leading member of the city’s Jewish community. Pauline Matarasso is Isaac’s daughter-in-law and translator.

hen I’m Your Fan: The Songs of Leonard Cohen hit stores in 1991, Leonard Cohen’s career had plummeted from its revered 1960s high. Cohen’s record label refused to release his album Various Positions – the one with ‘Hallelujah’. Luckily, Velvet Underground founder John Cale was one of the few who did hear the song. He covered it for the I’m Your Fan album, a modestly intended collection produced by a small French fanzine. Jeff Buckley adored the tribute album and covered Cale’s cover, having not even heard Cohen’s still-obscure original version. ‘Hallelujah’ is now one of the most often-performed songs in the world. I’m Your Fan thus offers a particularly notable example of a much broader truth: despite all the eye-rolling they inspire, tribute albums matter.

T
he word ‘gin’ dates back to the year 1200 and is synonymous with ‘beginning’. Although early medical textbooks treated it as a healing agent, the earliest alchemists claimed that gin was Satan’s tool. In more recent times, the gin trade consolidated the commercial and political power of nations and prompted a social campaign against women. Gin has been used successfully as a defence for murder; been held accountable for outbreaks of melancholia in eighteenth-century England; and has been advertised as an abortifacient. From carefully choreographed parades to the deliberate cultivation of a shroud of mystery through iron censorship, these dictators ceaselessly worked at their own image and encouraged the population at large to glorify them. n 1989 the Berlin Wall fell. In that euphoric year Rory MacLean travelled from Berlin to Moscow, exploring the forgotten half of Europe. Thirty years on MacLean retraces his original journey backwards, across countries confronting old ghosts and new fears: from revanchist Russia through Ukraine’s bloodlands, to Poland, Germany and the UK. As Europe sleepwalks into a perilous new age, he explores how opportunists – from Putin to Home Counties populists – have made a joke of truth. n 5 October 2017, the New York Times published an article by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey that helped change the world.
For months, Kantor and Twohey had been having confidential discussions with top actresses, former Weinstein employees and other sources, learning of disturbing, long-buried allegations. The journalists meticulously picked their way through decades-old secret payouts and non-disclosure agreements, pressed some of the most famous women in the world – and some unknown ones – to risk going on the record, and faced down Weinstein, his team of high-priced defenders, and even his private investigators. This is how they did it.

The Madness of Crowds Gender, Race and Identity THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
Douglas Murray An explosive new book from the Sunday Times and internationally bestselling author of The Strange Death of Europe
I
n The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray sets out to shatter our modern taboos. He examines the new century’s ‘tripwire’ issues: sexuality, race, mental health and gender, exposing the wobbly edifices on which our society rests. Murray argues that social media and online networks, originally designed as forums for open speech, have emboldened the mob and exacerbated groupthink; self-censorship and public shaming have become rife. Drawing on examples of those directly affected by the crowd mentality, including Tim Hunt in Britain and Brett Weinstein in America, Murray walks against the tide of censorship. He asks us to think more openly about what we’re afraid to say, to think beyond the psychology of the crowd. With his characteristic perceptiveness and eminently readable prose Murray argues coolly for a return to first principles in an age of mass hysteria. Douglas Murray is Associate Director of the Henry Jackson Society and Assistant Editor of the Spectator. His first book The Strange Death of a Europe was an international bestseller and has been translated into twenty-three languages.

The Promise Love and Loss in Modern China
Xinran Xue A spellbinding story of love and the history of modern China

ig mammals divide opinion. Lynx are just one of a range of beasts that have disappeared from Britain since the end of the last ice age and, alongside other megafauna, are plausible candidates for reintroduction. In The Missing Lynx, Ross Barnett uses case studies, fossil discovery maps, biomolecular evidence and more to paint pictures of these extinct species, and to explore the significance of their disappearance in ecological terms. He also looks in detail at the realistic potential of reintroductions and resurrection – topics that capture public interest today. Will we ever be able to bring these animals back? And should we? Ross Barnett is a palaeontologist with a PhD in Zoology from the University of Oxford. He specialises in seeking, analysing and interpreting ancient DNA. Barnett’s research has led to many remarkable findings in recent years and involved investigating escaped lynx in Edwardian Devon, rubbishing claims that the yeti is an ice-age polar bear and seeking the ancestral home of the enigmatic Orkney vole. In 2018, he received the Palaeontological Association’s Gertrude Elles Award for Public Engagement. Ross lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife and two daughters.

Leon McCarron There are many reasons why it might seem unwise to walk alone through the Middle East; McCarron ignored them all
L
eon McCarron took the potentially unwise decision to set off walking across the Middle East – alone. Following a series of wild hiking trails that traced ancient trading and pilgrimage routes, he traversed some of the most contested landscapes, visited the ruins of Hellenic citadels and legendary sites such as Wadi Rum, and crossed the vast deserts of the Sinai. He met families struggling to lead normal lives amidst political turmoil and Bedouin tribes at home in the vast deserts, and recognised that people, not politics, have shaped the Holy Land. Leon McCarron is a Northern Irish writer, film-maker and BBC presenter. He is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, recipient of the 2017 Neville Shulman Challenge Award and has produced Walking Home From Mongolia for National Geographic. Peter Hitchens Startling reassessment of commonly held assumptions on World War II by leading columnist Peter Hitchens

as World War II really the ‘Good War’? In the years since the declaration of peace in 1945, many myths have sprung up around the conflict in the victorious nations. In this book, Peter Hitchens deconstructs the many fables that have become associated with the narrative of the ‘Good War’. While not criticising or doubting the need for war against Nazi Germany at some stage, Hitchens does query whether September 1939 was the right moment, or the independence of Poland the right issue. In a provocative, deeply researched book, Hitchens questions the most common assumptions surrounding World War II. Peter Hitchens is a journalist and commentator. Catching Stardust Comets, Asteroids and the Birth of the Solar System
Natalie Starkey ‘A promising debut’ New Scientist

cy, rocky, sometimes dusty, always mysterious – comets and asteroids are among the solar system’s oldest inhabitants. Locked within each of these extra-terrestrial objects is the 4.6-billion-year wisdom of solar system events, and by studying them we can coerce them into revealing their closely guarded secrets. This offers us the chance to answer some fundamental questions about our planet and its inhabitants. Catching Stardust tells the story of these enigmatic celestial objects, revealing how scientists are using them to help understand a crucial time in our history – the birth of the solar system, and everything contained within it.

Piet Hoebeke Blending science, professional insight and disarming humour, this is a fascinating exploration of the penis written by a celebrated urologist
H
alf of the world’s population has one and yet a great deal of ignorance exists regarding the penis. Many men think their penis is too short, even if it’s above average. And it’s a well-kept secret that the morning erection is the last of eight nightly erections, or that the foreskin is as big as a postcard. In this accessible and humorous book, urologist Piet Hoebeke clarifies the mysteries of the penis. Why do we have one? How do we keep it healthy? And of course: what to do when your foreskin gets stuck between the zipper of your trousers? Professor Piet Hoebeke is a urologist at Ghent University Hospital, Belgium, and an authority in the field of surgery. He did not immediately know that he wanted to specialise in urology, but that turned out to be the specialisation for which you have to be both a great surgeon and a great person. And that is Professor Hoebeke.
