Dear Readers, I am writing this letter in summer 2020, in a world turned upside down by a pandemic. Though there is so much uncertainty in the world, it is impossible not to feel hope when you look at a bookshelf (or a catalogue) full of brilliant, beautiful books. Books can help children to navigate their way through the changing world around them, to escape or find adventure, and can give them a hug or a friend when they need one. We’ve never needed books more than we do now. You will find joy, wonder and a plethora of new talent in our spring 2021 list, not least in Lesley Parr’s gripping debut novel, The

Valley

of Lost Secrets – a story of mystery, escape and true adventure – and Clare Weze’s exceptionally inventive Alfie Miller, Lightning Catcher. We are also very committed to making you laugh: Ben Bailey Smith’s first children’s novel is unquestionably the comedy of the year; Peter Bently and Claire Powell join forces for the Hans Christian Andersen-inspired romp The

King’s Birthday Suit; and there are

mammoth laughs in the latest riotous summer treat from Patricia Cleveland-Peck and David Tazzyman, You

Can’t Take an Elephant

on Holiday. There’s so much within these pages to lift our spirits and bring us hope. Wishing you all much happy reading!

Fourteen Wolves Written by Catherine Barr Illustrated by Jenni Desmond Evocative and atmospherically beautiful, Fourteen Wolves tells the incredible true story of how reintroducing wolves into Yellowstone Park saved its crumbling ecosystem.

8th April 2021 Bloomsbury Children’s Books HARDBACK / 9781526607492 / £12.99 TRANSLATION RIGHTS: BLOOMSBURY TERRITORY: WO

ALSO AVAILABLE:

In fairy tales, the wolf’s cry makes people shudder. They’ve been hunted, captured. But the wolf carries a wild magic – a magic that once restored a barren land. When wolves disappeared from Yellowstone Park in the 1930s, the ecosystem started to collapse. Enormous herds of elk swarmed the plains, bears starved, rabbit families shrunk and birds flew away to new homes. Plants vanished, trees withered and rivers meandered.

The Woodland Trust: A Walk in the Woods Written by Flora Martyn Illustrated by Hannah Tolson Join Lucy and Oscar (and their dog Jasper) as they explore the four seasons of the year in nature. Come rain or shine, Oscar and Lucy walk Jasper the dog every day. On a spring morning, the world is waking up and the birds sing happy songs. On summer afternoons, it is hot and picnics are a joy to have. On autumn evenings, the sky turns black and minibeasts find their perfect hiding spots. Winter mornings are frosty and cold. Each spread uncovers an exciting new scene, at a certain time of the day and the year. Spot all the animals and minibeasts, trees and flowers, and learn first words too.

Until in 1995, wolves returned to the park and everything began to change for the better. This is the story of their homecoming.

Published in collaboration with The Woodland Trust, the largest woodland conservation charity in the UK, A Walk in the Woods will delight kids who love to explore.

Engaging, fascinating and hopeful, this book shows that human actions can make a difference – because every creature plays a part in the fight against the environmental crisis.

Flora Martyn is a writer from Warwickshire. She spends most of her time walking, running or cycling outside, come rain or shine.

Catherine Barr is a writer, editor and former Greenpeace campaigner.

Hannah Tolson is an illustrator who lives in Falmouth, Cornwall. Bold colours and playful compositions inspire her.

Alfie Miller, Lightning Catcher Clare Weze When Alfie sets an electrical creature loose, it’s a perfect storm of trouble. Skellig meets Stranger Things in this funny, heartfelt debut adventure for fans of Ross Welford and Christopher Edge. One thing Alfie’s noticed since his family moved to Folding Ford – the weather is BONKERS. A frost-covered branch on a tree in the middle of June? A tiny whirlwind in a bucket? Only in Folding Ford. With his bike, a notepad and his new best mate Sam, Alfie is going to investigate. His best clue is scientist Nathaniel Clemm … the only thing in town weirder than the weather. When Alfie ‘investigates’ Mr Clemm’s garden he finds a strange box. And when he opens it, SOMETHING gets out. Something fast, sparking with electricity and very much alive. But the creature from the box brings trouble to Folding Ford, and as barometers and tempers go haywire, Alfie finds himself at the centre of a perfect storm.
