Inside you’ll find all our latest and greatest textbooks and supplementary Classical Studies books. Whether you’re looking for new textbooks for use in the classroom, books to recommend to your students, or some inspiration for teacher development, we have something for everyone. As well as working with OCR on brand new editions of the Latin and Classical Greek prescribed texts for their AS and A Level specifications (texts for examination in 2021-23 will be available from April 2020), our other highlights this year include the new Key Stage 3 Latin course, de Romanis. Accessible and engaging for younger learners, it offers an introduction to both the Latin language and the cultural world of the Romans. We are also very excited about the long-awaited second edition of In Search of the Romans by James Renshaw, which is packed full of ancient sources, illustrations and activities that guide students through the events of Roman history. Lastly, we’d like to thank all the teachers and Classics specialists who have reviewed material, answered our questions and worked with us this past year to shape the new texts. We hope you enjoy!

SeCTIOn B – dePTH STUdY (ATHenS) Structure Section B has two question types, as follows: l
l
Source Utility Question worth 12 marks (Question 4). You will be asked to read between one and four of your prescribed sources. You will then be asked a question focusing on how useful this source or set of sources are for telling us about a certain historical event or situation. Essay Question worth 36 marks (Question 5 or 6). This is similar in format to the essay question for the period study (but note that it is worth six more marks). You will be given a choice of two essays. You should answer only one. You will need to use, analyse and evaluate the ancient source material you have studied in the depth study to answer the issues addressed in the question.

Sample questions Let us examine how to prepare for the question types in Section B, and what to expect from them. The Source Utility Question An example of a source utility question might ask you to read the passage below and answer the question relating to it: Socrates: Yes, you know, these are the only real divinities; all the rest is bunkum. Strepsiades: What on earth do you mean? You don’t think Olympian Zeus is a god? Socrates: Zeus? Who’s Zeus? What rubbish you talk! There is no Zeus! 288

MODERN SCHOLARSHIP
ACTIVITY Try standing like the Doryphoros; is it a comfortable stance? Why do you think Polykleitos has chosen it?
wet drapery technique used from the mid-fifth century BC onwards for female figures only, particularly Aphrodite, minor goddesses or nymphs. The drapery is so thin that it clings tightly to the figure’s body, as though wet, emphasising attractiveness and sexuality, or denoting movement or flight, as the wind forces the garment to cling to the body
PRESCRIBED SOURCE Aphrodite of the Agora Date: c. 420 BC
In his Archaic and Classical Greek Art, Robin Osborne argues that ‘we no longer look on a “real man:” we cannot square the over-developed architectural musculature with the clear skin of the face; we know we look at a construct . . . The personal is no longer on the sculptural agenda.’ Do you agree?
LATE CLASSICAL PERIOD Aphrodite of the Agora This over life-size marble sculpture has been identified as Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, by her alluring pose and revealing dress; other goddesses were portrayed in more modest manners. This marks a significant contrast and development from the korai, whose purpose was to denote female modesty and respectability. The statue may be one of the two Aphrodites in the sanctuary of Ares described by Pausanias, a travel-writer from the second century AD (1.8.4). Ares, the god of war, and Aphrodite had a long loveaffair, so her presence by his sanctuary would not be unusual. Aphrodite wears a chiton of extremely fine cloth and a himation is wound around her hips and thighs. The thin chiton clings to her body, revealing the shape of her breasts and body. The sculptor has evidently employed the wet drapery technique to emphasise Aphrodite’s sexuality and enticing nature. The contrast between the thin chiton and the thick folds of the himation make the sculpture even more interesting and appealing.
Material: marble Height: 1.83 m Function: female deity Original location: Agora in Athens Current location: Agora Museum in Athens Original or copy: original Significance: free-standing sculpture of the goddess Aphrodite, showing the wetdrapery technique
