The (Incomplete) Lit in Colour Play List Plays written by writers of colour for 11-18 year-olds to study and perform
Can you recommend a play by a writer of colour?
Yes, we can
This was a question asked by a teacher at a webinar looking for plays written by writers of colour that are suitable to teach in the classroom. It became the start of Bloomsbury’s Partnership in the Lit in Colour campaign - placing the spotlight on plays and drama, and supporting schools to make the teaching and learning of English Literature and Drama more inclusive. Bloomsbury’s first (Incomplete) Lit in Colour Play List features an initial 57 plays written by playwrights of colour from the Methuen Drama portfolio and fellow play publishers, for students to discover, study and perform in the classroom. With an overview of each play’s plot and themes as well as links to additional teaching resources, this Play List is the perfect resource for teachers looking to introduce more diverse plays into their classrooms.

Galatea

John Lyly
Charlie Dupré
Adapted by Emma Frankland and Subira Joy
Longlisted for the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting in 2022 and revived in line with the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Folio, Charlie Dupré's Compositor E celebrates the power of words and explores the many unlikely fingerprints that write and rewrite history.
Galatea was originally written in the 1580s by John Lyly, William Shakespeare's bestselling but now long-forgotten contemporary, inspiring Shakespeare's comedies from As You Like It to A Midsummer Night's Dream. Performed in front of Queen Elizabeth I over four hundred years ago, this tale of love, joy and the importance of welcoming outsiders is an incredibly resonant story for modern times.

Shooting Hedda Gabler
Beautiful Thing
Nina Segal
Thirty years on from its initial publication, Jonathan Harvey's iconic, coming-out and coming-of-age story set in the nineties still resonates with ideas on community, friendship, rites of passage and what it is to be sixteen and in love.
When offered the lead part in a Norwegian film adaptation of Hedda Gabler, an American actress seizes the opportunity to escape Hollywood - and gain some artistic credibility. She's running away from her past as a child star, from her present as a tabloid punchline, and from an unfortunate collision between a self-driving Tesla and a member of the paparazzi.

Scenes from 68* Years Hannah Khalil
As the 19th Century dawns in London, politicians of all parties gather to abolish the slave trade once and for all. But the price of freedom turns out to be a multi-billion pound bailout for slave owners rather than those enslaved.

Teaching and Learning Shakespeare through Theatre-based Practice
FOR
Edited by Tracy Irish and Jennifer Kitchen How can the study of Shakespeare contribute to equipping young people for the challenges of an uncertain future? This book offers a comprehensive exploration of the educational principles underpinning theatre-based practice and explains how and why this practice can open up the possibilities of Shakespeare study in the classroom. It draws on the authors’ own research and experience with organisations including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Folger and Coram Shakespeare Schools Foundation. January 2024 Pb | 9781350292048 | £21.99
William Shakespeare: A Brief Life Paul Menzer
Part One consolidates recent developments in the field and engages in lively dialogue with core questions of Shakespeare's place in the classroom. Part Two curates a series of interviews with leaders and practitioners from theatres and the other Shakespeare institutions, exploring their core principles and practices. Part Three presents chapters from and about classroom teachers, who share their experiences of successfully embedding theatre-based approaches to Shakespeare in their own diverse contexts.
One of the appealing dynamics of the Shakespeare myth is the contrast of his humble beginnings and his lofty achievements, persuading us that genius might blossom anywhere. This book honours these myths, but also explores some of the mysteries surrounding his life. Pb | 9781350156753 | £14.99
