ISLAND HOPPING What’s the game? In this game, imaginary dangers and physical activity add excitement and help learning. Your child blends spoken sounds into words, and splits spoken words into sounds, preparing them for blending sounds into words for reading and splitting words into sounds for spelling.

How to play

Start at the paper island furthest from the ‘mainland’. Explain to your child that they are stranded and must hop from island to island to reach the safety of the mainland.

2

Tell your child that they must leave a gift at each island before moving on. Say that you have the gifts hidden and they can have them if they guess the names from your sound clues.

3

At the first island, sound out the name of one of the objects in your box, phoneme by phoneme (e.g. ‘p – a – n’). If your child can name the object correctly, give them the object to leave on the ‘island’ and tell them to hop to the next island.

You will need

Learning to Teach Young Children

Edited by Michael Gasper and Rosie Walker

This book uses 30 questions about citizenship, play, diversity, families and communities to help you understand the core ideas and beliefs and get you thinking about how they apply to your setting. With comic-style illustrations and summaries, the book also brings lesson plans, surveys, case studies and more resources on a companion website.

An introduction to the theory and practice of mentoring, coaching and supervising in early childhood, using case studies from around the world to explore important issues and principles to guide your CPD. Each chapter comes with a summary and questions to reflect on. A companion website hosts podcasts and further reading ideas.
