Dear Friends, Welcome to our catalogue of joy and delight for July–December 2021. As I write this, we are more aware than ever of the important role books and reading have to play in supporting children’s mental health and wellbeing. We are so proud of the work our authors and illustrators do to spread hope, empathy and imagination through the magic of words and pictures. You’ll find so much to look forward to within these pages, so I am just going to draw your attention to three books that seem particularly apt right now. Tom Percival’s new picture book Tilda

Tries Again is a

gorgeous story with a powerful message about resilience at its heart – Tom’s Big Bright Feelings series has seen sales surge as parents, teachers and children discover his pitch-perfect, empathy-packed stories.

Tomorrow Is Beautiful is a dazzlingly good poetry anthology selected by the award-bedecked Sarah Crossan – a fresh, hopeful and inspiring collection for young adult readers. And finally, Grown by Melissa Cummings-Quarry and Natalie A. Carter is a vital, life-affirming reallife read for Black girls everywhere. An ode to Black girlhood and a celebration of Black British culture, the debut book from the founders of the Black Girls’ Book Club will empower a generation to chase their dreams and become unstoppable. Exiled to a far-flung island by the whims of the gods, Medusa has little company except the snakes that adorn her head instead of hair. But when a charmed, beautiful boy called Perseus arrives on the island, her lonely existence is disrupted with the force of a supernova, unleashing desire, love, betrayal … and destiny itself. This lyrical, feminist retelling of Greek myth illuminates the girl behind the legend. Perfect for fans of Madeline Miller and Louise O’Neill, it brings alive Medusa for a new generation. Jessie Burton is the author of three internationally bestselling novels for adults: The Miniaturist, The Muse and The Confession. Jessie’s first novel for children, The Restless Girls, was published by Bloomsbury in 2018.

BLOOMSBURY TEEN AND YA PICTURE BOOKS

Olivia Lomenech Gill is a winner of the English Association Picture Book Award and has been shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal.

Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and its impact on British politics, this action-driven novel shows once again that Celia Rees is one of our very best writers for teenage readers. Wild and beautiful, spoilt and wilful, Sovay finds that her cosseted upbringing in rural England has not prepared her for life as a highway robber, for defending the honour of her family or for trying to save herself from corruption and evil. As Sovay becomes more and more embroiled in adventures she could never have imagined, a story of dark intrigue, thwarted passions and sinister intentions is revealed to her. Will she be able to survive, and if she does so, at what cost? ‘Well-known for her ability to write gripping stories featuring strong, intelligent female characters, Celia Rees has yet another compelling read in Pirates!’ – Financial Times

Pirates! Celia Rees When two young women meet under extraordinary circumstances in the eighteenth-century West Indies, they are unified in their desire to escape their oppressive lives. The first is a slave, subjected to terrible cruelty at the hands of the plantation manager. The second is a spirited and rebellious English girl, sent to the West Indies to marry well. But fate ensures that one night the two young women have to save each other and run away to a life no less dangerous but certainly a lot more free. As pirates, they roam the seas, fight pitched battles against their foes and become embroiled in many a heartquickening adventure. Celia Rees has written over twenty books for Young Adults and is best known for her historical fiction. Her first historical novel, Witch Child, was translated into 28 languages. Witch Child and subsequent titles, Sorceress and Pirates!, were shortlisted for the Guardian, Whitbread (Costa) and WHSmith Awards in the UK and won awards in the UK, USA, France and Italy. She lives in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, UK and divides her time between writing, talking to readers in schools and libraries, reviewing and teaching creative writing.
