Church Fonts ISBN: 9781784423919 Author: Matthew Byrne Format: Paperback, 64pp
Available: February 2020 Price: £8.99
In association with the National Churches Trust
In every English parish church stands a font. For centuries, every infant in the parish was considered to have been saved from damnation once christened and fonts, as the vessels for this crucial rite of passage, were a pre-eminent tool in the Church’s fight against the Devil. Matthew Byrne explores numerous examples in churches all over the country, highlighting the most notable fonts and explaining their changing decoration across the centuries. 46

Several English counties are rich in galena, an ore of lead from which the metal has been relatively easily extracted from Roman to modern times. The drastic railway closures of the 1960s led to the slow decay and re-purposing of hundreds of miles of railway infrastructure. Though these buildings and apparatus are now ghosts of their former selves, countless clues to our railway heritage still remain today. Goods services were at least as important to the railways as passenger traffic from the earliest days until the road haulage revolution in the mid-twentieth century. This book examines the basic rolling stock of these trains, and the highly organised system required for their efficient operation, supported by stunning illustrations and photographs, bringing the subject matter vibrantly to life.
During the late Victorian/early Edwardian period, the development of the motor car represented the peak of technological experimentation. Termed ‘horseless carriages’, these cars were initially constructed by inventive engineers in back-street workshops. This books covers the history of veteran motor cars, packed with fascinating facts about the experimental origins of the motoring industry.

Perhaps more so than any other decade, the sixties had the broadest impact on the twentieth-century Western world. New style icons such as the teenage model Twiggy combined girl-next-door looks with trendy outfits that felt both aspirational and accessible, whilst popular culture, be it music or screen, heavily influenced mainstream fashion. Fashion historian Daniel Milord-Cottam offers a concise guide to the changing styles and trends across the decade.
In May 1940, German troops advanced through western Europe, forcing the Allied armies to retreat to the coast of France. The evacuation plan – Operation Dynamo – was put into effect using a hastily assembled armada of disparate vessels, with the expectation that only about 45,000 men might be rescued. However, with the assistance of the Dunkirk Little Ships, 338,226 Allied troops were brought safely back to England.
