Often seen combing the shoreline of the River Thames at low tide, groups of archaeology enthusiasts known as ‘mudlarks’ continue a tradition that dates back to the eighteenth century. Over the years they have found a vast array of historical artefacts providing glimpses into the city’s past. Objects lost or discarded centuries ago – from ancient river offerings such as the Battersea Shield and Waterloo Helmet, to seventeenth-century trade tokens and even medals for bravery – have been discovered in the river. This book explores a fascinating assortment of finds from prehistoric to modern times, which collectively tell the rich and illustrious story of London and its inhabitants. Bees pollinate 80 per cent of the world’s crops and plants, but how much do we really know about them? Small, clever and mysterious, the honeybee in particular has long been celebrated in human culture. This beautifully illustrated guide explores the honeybee’s historic relationship with humans, the basics of beekeeping, and how we can help save the bees’ dwindling population.
From dragon-slaying spears and the ribs of monstrous cows, to pagan altars, reindeer horns and mummified skulls, Britain’s churches and cathedrals contain a plethora of fascinating and unexpected objects. This captivating history explores these items and traditions, and unravels the tales, legends and folkloric ceremonies behind them.
Miniature Railways ISBN: 9781784424404 Author: David Henshaw Format: Paperback, 64pp
Available: April 2021 Price: £8.99
There are more than 400 miniature railways in Britain. Some are hidden away and privately owned, others are parkland attractions, and some – such as the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch – are large commercial enterprises. They come in an array of gauges, but their most definitive characteristic is that they can carry passengers, whether sitting astride the rolling stock or inside enclosed carriages. In this colourfully illustrated guide, David Henshaw offers a concise history of miniature railways from the nineteenth century to the modern day, including a whistle-stop tour of the most notable examples open to the public – such as the Ravenglass & Eskdale, Bure Valley and Eastleigh Lakeside railways – exploring their layouts, engineering and rolling stock. plants, could explain the principles of acupuncture and was said to have advised Josiah Wedgwood on the production of Chinese porcelain. He worked as a page in the home of the Duchess of Dorset at Knole and was educated at Sevenoaks School, and later returned to a normal life in Canton. Chinoiserie enjoyed an Indian summer in late‑Georgian England and its chief proponent was the Prince Regent, later George IV. He commissioned Chinese interiors at Carlton House in London and more famously at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. But the world was changing, Britain was becoming more assertive internationally, and by the 1840s the China of the eighteenth‑century imagination was challenged by the unlocking of China’s borders and increasing familiarity with the Orient.
A teapot made at the Worcester Porcelain Factory in the 1770s shows how faithfully the concept of the teapot was translated from China to Britain.
Vauxhall Motors built a formidable reputation in its early years with notable machines like the Prince Henry, the 30/98 and the 1914 Grand Prix cars, and then moved into a more mainstream area of the market, remaining in the forefront of innovation during the 1930s. This illustrated introduction explores the history of Vauxhall from its beginning in 1903 to the city cars and SUVs of the twenty-first century.

Middleton Park (Oxfordshire) was remodelled in the early nineteenth century and contained a Chinese room with bamboo furniture and Chinese wallpaper. The house was demolished in 1935.

nineteenth century. He also gave an account of a drink known as cha, later to be known in Europe as tea. By the eighteenth century there were enough Chinese travel books to line whole bookshelves and China made the transition from an imagined world on the printed page to a source of desirable objects for the home. Chinoiserie was a product of a thriving economy in the eighteenth century. Chinese wallpapers, furniture and ceramics continued to grace the interiors of homes in England until the mid‑nineteenth century. And China continued to fascinate European minds. In 1775 Lady Proctor reported seeing an as yet unfamiliar sight, in the home of the Duke of Argyll: ‘A Chinese instrument called a gong’. Huang ya Dong was a Chinese boy brought to England by the naturalist John Bradby Blake in about 1770. A curiosity in intellectual and artistic circles, he was said to be knowledgeable about Chinese

designs for furniture at Melbourne House ‘may be improved a little’. Marquetry was the ideal medium in which to demonstrate the new repertory of ornament and colour, and the marquetry furniture produced by Chippendale’s workshop is among of the finest to be found anywhere in Europe. The technique was ideally suited to the polychrome palette and repetitive motifs of neo-Classicism. Using a wide variety of native and exotic woods as veneers they were able to create astonishing polychromatic effects which could integrate with the architectural decoration of grand interiors. Fine carving also continued to be a characteristic feature of the firm’s output, as on the frames of the ‘cabriole’ chairs of the 1770s. By this stage Thomas Chippendale junior was probably almost entirely responsible for the design side of the business. He was to make his mark as an independent designer with the publication of his own Sketches of Ornament (1779).

effect. As the anonymous writer in The World wrote in 1754, ‘how much of late we are improved in architecture not merely by the adoption of what we call Chinese, nor by the restoration of what we call Gothic, but by the happy mixture of both’. The result, like Lady Arniston’s dressing table, is a fortuitous amalgam: its serpentine shape is topped by a pagoda-like canopy, while the carved astragals of the side cupboards combine suggestions of both Gothic and Chinese frets. The 1754 Director contained sixtyfour plates with furniture of a Chinese character, over one-third of the total. Like the Modern style it was particularly suitable for carving. There were pier glasses with birds and dragons, beds and sofas with pagoda or trellised canopies, china cases with upturned eaves and hanging bells, bookshelves and china shelves with fretwork sides and brackets. Many of the items were associated with ‘feminine’ rooms such as bedrooms, dressing rooms and drawing rooms,

For at least 150 years, Thomas Chippendale has been synonymous with beautifully made furniture in a variety of styles – Rococo, Chinese, Gothic and neo-Classical. This illustrated history focuses on Britain’s most famous furniture maker and designer, including the ‘Chippendale style’ that became popular around the world after his death.
