Fermentation on Wheels Road Stories, Food Ramblings, and 50 DoIt-Yourself Recipes from Sauerkraut, Kombucha, and Yogurt to Miso, Tempeh, and Mead Tara Whitsitt

256pp Hardback Sketches throughout and colour insert £20.00 November 2017 World rights available

Three years ago, food activist Tara Whitsitt had a dream: to take to the road in a converted school bus turned fermentation lab, and spread the tasty gospel of kombucha, kimchi, and kefir nationwide. The dream inspired Tara to put wheels on her fermentation practice--to bring her microbe-dense delicacies, her expertise, and her generosity to food communities across the country. Her motto along the way: tasty food belongs to everyone. Through her winning stories, illustrations, photographs, and more than forty recipes, Fermentation on Wheels tracks the two years and 20,000 miles Tara spent on the road, where she became known as an apostle of outrageously delicious, creative, healthy, and sustainable fermented flavors--from kombucha to sauerkraut to wild berry wines. A practical and delectable cookbook, Fermentation on Wheels is also an inspiring celebration of how food traditions (and starter cultures) can bring people together, pollinate their minds, and change their lives for the better. Tara Whitsitt is a nomadic artist and educator whose passion for growing food and teaching fermentation inspired the grassroots educational project “Fermentation on Wheels”: Tara drives around the country sharing starter cultures, along with the history and science of fermentation, and the stories she gathers on the road. Along with millions of microbes, she travels with a gray panther-like cat named Franklin. Her favorite foods include miso & sardines, rye toast, smoked sauerkraut, Spanish goat cheese, and other flavors of the pungent, the salty, and the umami. She lives in Eugene, OR.

CO O K E R Y Leave Me Alone with the Recipes The Life, Art, and Cookbook of Cipe Pineles Cipe Pineles

Not long ago, Sarah Rich and Wendy MacNaughton discovered a sketchbook at an antiquarian book fair that drew them in like magnets: it displayed a vibrant painting of hot pink beets with emerald green tops, and a hand-lettered recipe for borscht written in script so full of life and character, it was hard to believe it was more than 65 years old. The painted manuscript was the work of one of the most influential graphic designers of the 20th century--Cipe (pronounced “C.P.”) Pineles, the first female art director at Condé Nast. Completed in 1945, her recipe book was both a private keepsake reflecting Pineles’s intimate connection to the Eastern European food of her childhood--she called it Leave Me Alone With the Recipes--and, for Wendy and Sarah, a talisman of a woman they had not known was their idol: a strong, independent spirit whose rich archive--of drawings, recipes, diaries, and letters to family and friends--led them into a dazzling history of design, art, food, New York City society, and culture in the middle of the American century. With Pineles’s illustrated cookbook and a section of updated recipes as its centerpiece, this gorgeous volume will delight foodies and design devotees alike.

Mindful Running offers an engaging and highly practical guide to how mindfulness can both optimise sporting performance and improve general health. The benefits of mindfulness for general well-being have been discussed extensively, but little has been written about how mindfulness can be applied to running. In this book, experienced health and fitness journalist Mackenzie L. Havey explores how combining mindfulness with running can not only improve performance, but can also enhance overall wellbeing. The easy-to-understand explanations show how all runners can benefit from meditative practices and positive thinking. This in turn can help prevent injuries, enhance PBs and improve the runner’s psychological strength and life-balance.

Out on the Land is a beautiful and absorbing exploration of, and tribute to, the circumpolar boreal forest of the north: its landscape, its people, their cultures and skills, the wilderness that embodies it, and its immense beauty. The book covers every aspect of being in the wilderness in both winter and summer (clothing, kit, skills, cooking, survival), revealing the age-old traditions and techniques, and how to carry them out yourself. Ray Mears is internationally recognised as an authority on bushcraft and survival, and is a household name through his many award-winning TV series. Lars Fält, founder of the Swedish Army Survival School, lectures on survival worldwide and has written widely on wilderness living skills. NN AU T ITCI A AU CL A:LG I F T B O O K S The Impractical Boat Owner Tales and Trials from Years of Floundering Afloat Dave Selby

96pp 216mm x 135mm

This is a book with no practical purpose whatsoever. As any fan of Dave’s would probably guess, a book by him won’t make you a better sailor, and it won’t provide any instruction on boat maintenance. But it will entertain – his light but observational writings tap the rich well of all those things that sailors know but few dare admit.

The Impractical Boat Owner is a collection of Dave’s columns for Practical Boat Owner magazine, with additional ‘Lessons Not Learned’ features, all accompanied by Jake Kavanagh’s wonderful cartoons. The Impractical Boat Owner is an antidote to all that’s written about expensive shiny new yachts, self-improvement, the quest for qualifications and practical skills. Dave Selby's columns have appeared in The Times, the Daily Telegraph, the Financial Times and the Evening Standard. He also writes for Practical Boat Owner and Classic Boat. He lives in Maldon, Essex. @ImpracticalBoat

Yacht Were You Thinking? An A-Z of Boat Names Good and Bad Jonathan Eyers

144pp 180mm x 120mm Hardback £9.99

Naming a boat is as personal as naming a baby (even if few male skippers would risk telling the wife that). The culmination of many years of dreaming and penny-pinching, the purchase of a boat of any size is a huge event for any sailor, and with that comes serious naming pressure. Many boat owners have a secret fear that someone else got their brilliantly original name first – or ruined it for ever by reducing its reputation to snigger-worthy opprobrium. The perfect gift for any skipper or would-be skipper, and featuring hundreds of common and uncommon names, this entertaining little book will answer perhaps the most important question new owners should ask themselves: what will this name say about me? With fascinating history, a fair bit of psychology and a lot of humour, this is the essential guide for all would-be boat owners, and for anyone looking for a dad-type gift on Father’s Day or at Christmas. Jonathan Eyers is the author of: Don’t Shoot the Albatross!: Nautical Myths and Superstitions, How to Snog a Hagfish!: Disgusting Things in the Sea and Final Voyage: The World’s Worst Maritime Disasters for Adlard Coles Nautical, and the novel The Thieves of Pudding Lane for Bloomsbury Children’s.

The Barefoot Navigator is an unusual and fascinating exploration of the skills of navigation employed by the ancients and transferable to the present day. How did the Vikings routinely travel on the notorious stretches of water between Iceland, Greenland and Scandinavia? The second part shows how to use these ancient techniques to supplement today’s navigational hardware, especially in survival situations. Jack Lagan has been sailing since the 1960s on everything from 14ft dinghies to 30m Baltic Traders around the world. When not living aboard, fitting navigation systems and helping with yacht deliveries, he is a writer and documentary film-maker.

Celestial Navigation for Yachtsmen 13th edition Mary Blewitt

The 13th edition of this bestselling book is proof of the success of Mary Blewitt's concise and clear style in explaining a particularly difficult skill. The worked examples require only straightforward addition and subtraction, which explains why this book has truly earned its reputation for making a tricky subject easy to understand. Recent advances in electronic navigation have transported most offshore navigators to a world of press-button convenience. However, there is still a vital need for traditional skills when things go wrong: batteries can fail, aerials go overboard, and electronics have been known to get wet. A bestseller for over 65 years and a navigation bible for generations of sailors, Celestial Navigation for Yachtsmen remains a model of simplicity and clarity. This edition has been thoroughly revised by Andy Du Port, the highly respected former editor of Reeds Almanacs.

NNAU AUTTIICCAALL NNAARRRRAT ATIIVVEESS The Cape Horners' Club Adrian Flanagan

Reaching deep into the Southern Ocean, the Cape intrudes into the flow of the water and weather patterns at the bottom of the world and funnels them into a maritime superhighway a mere 500 miles wide, building massive seas and accelerating wind speeds to hurricane strength. Currents rip at rates that defeat powerful engines. Legendarily treacherous conditions were enough to secure Cape Horn’s reputation as the ultimate in ocean violence; the supreme test of sailors and ships. It is the oceanic equivalent of the climbers’ Everest, and the challenge to some became irresistible.

The Sea Takes No Prisoners Peter Clutterbuck

208pp 234mm x 153mm Paperback

This book recounts the history of the Cape through the stories of the people who’ve taken it on and made it round – the Cape Horners’ Club. Woven through their stories is a history of the Cape, from its discovery to its use as a trading corridor until the opening of the Panama Canal, to its more recent role as a pure challenge for the very best yachtsmen and yachtswomen in the world. Changes in weather prediction and navigation have had a huge impact, but the pressure for ever-faster times has never been greater. Adrian Flanagan worked as a freelance sports journalist, contributing to The Times, the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian and the Daily Mail. In October 2008, he became the first solo yachtsman to sail vertically round the world (via Cape Horn and the Russian Arctic). Over the Top, his account of the voyage, was published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson.

This is a classic real-life story of derring do on the high seas, complete with extreme risk, last-minute ingenuity and many near-misses. Beginning in the 1960s, this book tells of the real life adventures of the author as a boy – a time of boarding schools, long holidays and an unbelievable amount of freedom and danger. Encouraged by his parents (who lived abroad) to become more independent and self-sufficient, Peter decided to see how far he could get in his family’s small open dinghy Calypso. Aged 16, he spent a winter restoring her, before pootling straight out into a force 7 gale and very nearly capsizing, after which he headed back to land to plan even more extreme adventures.

Calypso was a Wayfarer, a small (16ft) and very popular class of open dinghy; a boat designed for pottering around coastlines and estuaries during the day. But along with the occasional brave crewmate, Peter managed to sail her across the Channel, through the Bay of Biscay, down the French canals and into the Mediterranean, then up into the North Sea and the Baltic to Oslo, living aboard for three months at a time.

8-page colour photo section and b/w Charming, beautifully written and a lovely insight into a seemingly golden time, photos and maps throughout this is a great read, but will also be of huge practical use to anyone wanting to go that bit further in their dinghy. £14.99 January 2018 World rights available

Gordon Bennett And the First Yacht Race Across the Atlantic Sam Jefferson

Peter Clutterbuck has been a professional yachtsman and sailing instructor in the UK and the US. He has crossed the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans under sail, participated in the Singlehanded Transpacific Race, and campaigned the ocean racing trimaran Spirit of England to 15 wins and 4 international race records. He still sails the same Wayfarer dinghy.

The 1866 transatlantic yacht race was a match that saw three yachts battle their way across the Atlantic in the dead of winter in pursuit of a $90,000 prize. Six men died in the brutal and close-fought contest, and the event changed the perception of yachting from a slightly effete gentlemen’s pursuit into something altogether more rugged and adventurous. This book tells the exhilarating true story of the race, focussing on the victorious yacht Henrietta and her owner James Gordon Bennett, a notorious playboy. There’s ample drama, eccentric characters and plenty of scandal and adventure. Sam Jefferson is a journalist and maritime historian, and the author of Clipper Ships and The Golden Age of Sail and Sea Fever. He is a former Deputy Editor of Sailing Today, and writes regularly for Classic Boat, Sailing Today andTraditional Boats and Tall Ships.

N AU T I C A L N A R R AT I V E S Off the Deep End A History of Madness at Sea Nic Compton

In the 18th century, the Royal Navy’s own physician found that sailors were seven times more likely to suffer from severe mental illness than members of the general population. On the no man’s land of the high seas, beyond the rule of law, and away from any sight of land for weeks at a time, often living in overcrowded and confined spaces, where anything that goes wrong could likely be fatal, the incredible pressures on sailors were immense. The ever-present fear drove some men to faith in God and superstition, and drove others mad. But that didn’t stop as boat technology improved and seamanship evolved in the modern era.

Off the Deep End is the first detailed study of the effect on sanity that the vastness, loneliness and inestimable power of the sea has always had on sailors’ sanity, confusing the senses and making rational thought difficult. Of interest to readers of maritime history, psychology, sociology and behavioural science, as well, of course, as to sailors of all types and experience, this unique and fascinating book offers insight and analysis - a thoroughly absorbing read about the effects of the cruel sea on the human mind. Nic Compton is a widely published author, journalist and photographer. Formerly the Editor of Classic Boat magazine for 5 years, he then branched out into a freelance writing career and has written 5 books for Adlard Coles Nautical. 256pp 234mm x 153mm Hardback £16.99 September 2017 World rights avaialble

The Frozen Frontier Polar Bound through the Northwest Passage Jane Maufe

The Northwest Passage – a sea route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Arctic. For centuries, seafarers believed it did not exist, could not be found, or would prove too treacherous for any vessel to sail through. And it had them all in thrall. One of the most isolated, desolate and forbidding wastes on earth, the Arctic archipelago suffers merciless winds and relentless currents that drive millions of tons of ice in all directions. Sea routes through this frozen frontier open up briefly, but can freeze up again without warning, trapping vessels and crushing their hulls, hundreds of miles from any hope of rescue. But the Northwest Passage can be traversed by boat – and David Scott Cowper is the only person to have transited all seven possible routes. As unflinching as the ice around him, he sailed through the majority singlehandedly and into the record books. This is the extraordinary story of his voyage through the most difficult route – the first private vessel ever to do so – as told in the most charming and entertaining fashion by his long-suffering crew, Jane Maufe. It is a captivating story of adventurous sailing, providing a fascinating insight into the relationship between two serious and dedicated sailors, battling alone but together in some of the most remote waters on the planet.

David Scott Cowper is an intrepid British seafarer who holds numerous records. He was the first man to sail solo around the world in both directions, and the first to circumnavigate the world via the Northwest Passage singlehandedly - a journey that took over 4 years. Jane Maufe is the four times great niece of Sir John Franklin, who was lost (along with his 129 crew) trying to chart and navigate a route through the Northwest Passage in 1845. Jane and David achieved the first ever transit through the most northerly route and it was the first by a woman. Leaving Northern Ireland in August, it took them just under 20 days to reach Alaska via the McClure Strait.

Dominic Couzens is an ornithologist and wildlife journalist. Following on from Extinct Boids and Nextinction, Critical Critters is the third in this epic trilogy of books dedicated to extinct and critically endangered animals from cartoonist Ralph Steadman and film-maker Ceri Levy. Expect plenty more of what made the first two books so successful unpredictable nonsense beasts, irreverent jokes, a diary-style record of the creative mayhem, and around 100 spectacular illustrations by Ralph of critically endangered mammals, insects, fish, lizards and trees – a stunning collection, with a serious conservation message. Ralph Steadman collaborated with Hunter S. Birds New to Science 50 Years of Avian Discoveries David Brewer

Amazing as it might sound, ornithologists are still discovering, on average, five or six bird species that are completely new to science each year. What’s more, these aren’t all just obscure brown birds on tiny islands – witness the bizarre Bare-faced Bulbul from Laos (2009) or gaudy Bugun Liocichla from north-west India (2005). This book documents all of these remarkable discoveries made since 1960, from Barau’s Petrel onwards, covering around 300 species. It fills an important gap in the ornithological literature. Written in an engaging style, Birds New to Science provides a rich reference to an era of adventure in ornithology. Each species account discusses the story of the discovery, with photographs of the birds where available, along with a discussion of what is known about the species’ biology, habitat and distribution, with a strong conservation message – most of the species in the book are either vulnerable or endangered. An appendix listing ‘splits’ – new species recognised by taxonomists following DNA or sonogram research – is also included.

N AT U R A L H I S TO R Y Y: N A R R AT I V E S The Hen Harrier Donald Watson

320pp

An acknowledged classic of narrative nature-writing, Donald Watson’s The Hen Harrier was the culmination of a lifetime’s study of this beautiful upland bird. A gentle, warm and wonderfully written book, The Hen Harrier stems from an age of ‘amateur’ conservation, from the pen of a man who cared deeply about birds and their habitats, especially of the Scottish borders where he conducted much of his research and painting. The book was among the last of a dying breed; it would be thirty years or more before writing on our natural history would again reach the heights of accessibility to nature-lovers exemplified by Donald Watson and his peers. With a foreword by conservation champion Mark Avery, this edition of Watson’s greatest work is particularly timely. The conflict between grouse-shooting interests, which has overseen the virtual extinction of the harrier as a breeding bird in England through illegal persecution, and an increasingly vocal conservationist lobby is the number one conservation issue in Britain today.

Donald Watson was renowned as both a pre-eminent artist of wild south-west Scotland and as a talented field ornithologist. He Hardback continued his scientific studies, becoming president of the Scottish Black and white illustrations throughout Ornithologists’ Club, with this culminating in his great masterpiece, 1977’s The Hen Harrier. Later in life he continued to paint and £16.99 publish, with his last book, In Search of Harriers, published shortly July 2017 after his death in 2005. World rights available 216mm x 135mm

A Shadow Above The Fall and Rise of the Raven Joe Shute

For centuries, the raven Corvus Corax has stalked us in life and in death. Excavations of Bronze Age settlements in Britain have revealed raven bones mingled with human remains. The Viking and Norman warriors that stormed these shores did so sporting ravens on their shields and banners. By the 15th century the service the birds provided scavenging and picking clean bodies on the streets of British cities led to their protection, under the first-ever piece of nature conservation legislation. The history of this bird embodies our best and worst impulses, and symbolises our deepest fears. Ravens became ingrained in our culture as omens of death, and we projected our own deepest fears on to them.

288pp 216mm x 135mm Hardback 12 black and white illustrations £16.99 Feburary 2018

Joe Shute’s book chronicles the return of the raven, and the people who have made that comeback possible. In it, he travels to every corner of the country, meeting those who have spent the past ten years recording every sound and sighting, and showing why these birds reflect and provoke our innermost feelings. Joe Shute is senior feature writer on the Daily Telegraph and Telegraph Saturday Magazine. His day-to-day brief covers crime, history, domestic and international affairs, but his real interest is conservation. A keen ornithologist, Joe regularly write in-depth features on wildlife matters for the Telegraph.
