The Art Teacher's Guide to Exploring Art and Design in the Community

Ilona Szekely

An exuberant, theoretically underpinned guide to support teacher educators to develop engaging, relatable programmes, building connection in diverse classrooms. Drawing on an abundance of examples from around the world, including the NYC 2nd Ave Subway, the Detroit’s Heidelberg Project, the Favel Painting Foundation and bicycle rack sculpture, Szekely inspires readers to look beyond the classroom walls to develop meaningful art experiences for students. She shows the myriad art forms, media expressions, and design professions that have the influence and potential to shape the local environment, reaching far beyond the traditional museum and gallery venue.

ISLAND HOPPING

What’ s the game? In this game, imaginary dangers and physical activity add excitement and help learning. Your child blends spoken sounds into words, and splits spoken words into sounds, preparing them for blending sounds into words for reading and splitting words into sounds for spelling.

You will need ➡ A few objects with names that are short, simple words (for a list of common short, simple words, see the Word List on page 89). ➡ A box. ➡ Some sheets of paper cut to look island-shaped.

Before you play Choose a room or open space to play. Identify a ‘home area’ on one side, such as a chair or cushion, to represent the mainland. Spread the sheets of paper across the space, each about 50 cm apart, so that they end at the home area/‘mainland’. Hide your objects in the box.

Start at the paper island furthest from the ‘mainland’. Explain to your child that they are stranded and must hop from island to island to reach the safety of the mainland.

Tell your child that they must leave a gift at each island before moving on. Say that you have the gifts hidden and they can have them if they guess the names from your sound clues.

At the first island, sound out the name of one of the objects in your box, phoneme by phoneme (e.g. ‘p – a – n’). If your child can name the object correctly, give them the object to leave on the ‘island’ and tell them to hop to the next island.

Continue with the name guessing and island hopping until your child reaches the ‘mainland’.

Add a twist This time, put an object on each of the islands. Explain that your child can only move on to the next island if they can split the name of the object into all its separate sounds (e.g. ‘s – o – ck’).
