HISTORY OF BLOSSMAN GAS Celebrating 70 Years in Business

22021: Blossman Gas celebrated 70 years in business.

1951: Woodrow Blossman started Blossman Gas, Inc. on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi with two small operations in Gulfport and Pascagoula, Mississippi—plus two even smaller operations in South Louisiana, which were quickly sold.

1990: The Blossman Gas family mourned the death of its founder and chairman, Woodrow Blossman. John Blossman assumed the chairman/CEO role and named Bob Mayer as the third—and first non-family member—president.

Early 1970s: Acquisitions resulted in rapid branch growth in the early 1970s and five additional branches in Georgia and Alabama.

2001: Stuart Weidie, stepson of John Blossman, assumed the CEO/Presidential role of Blossman Gas. 2009: Alliance AutoGas launched.

Born October 10, 1913, Woodrow Blossman worked with his brother, A.R. Blossman, in the propane industry until 1951, when Woodrow branched out to form Blossman Gas. The company quickly grew into one of the largest propane suppliers in the Southeast. True to his word, Woodrow developed a company whose primary focus was more about the business practice than the product. John Blossman, son of Woodrow, came into the company to serve as president in 1969. Woodrow stayed on as chairman of the board. Under his 40-year leadership, Blossman Gas grew from 14 branches selling 13 million gallons a year to more than 60 branches selling 70 million gallons, becoming the 10th-largest propane company in the nation at the time. After Bob Mayer retired as president in 2001, Stuart Weidie, stepson of John Blossman, assumed the president and CEO position at Blossman Gas. Under his leadership, Blossman formed Alliance AutoGas, America’s only complete program to transition fleets to autogas. Autogas is the common name for propane when used as a vehicle fuel. Blossman continues to be on the forefront of innovations within the propane industry. The company sold the first Warm Front heater in 2021, a groundbreaking new zone heating product that provides portable heat to spaces up 1,000 sq. ft. Blossman is also one of the early adopters of renewable propane, giving the industry a path to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

Create a soapy water mixture in your bucket. Remove the grates and panels, submerge in your bucket. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.

Rinse all surfaces clean, making sure to thoroughly dry cast-iron grates to avoid rusting.

After washing the outside of the grill, use an absorbent towel to wipe down and dry all surfaces.

After the grates and panels have soaked, take them out and scrub them with your grill brush.

Empty the bucket of dirty water, then refill it with clean water and a few squirts of dish soap.

For really stubborn gunk, mix a paste of white vinegar and baking soda and apply it directly to the worst caked-on food bits.

Scrub down the entire outside of the grill using a large kitchen sponge. Be aware the steel wool, metal sponges, and coarse scouring pads can cause scratches, so avoid using them on finished surfaces.

May is National Barbecue Month, and Memorial Day is tied with Labor Day as the second-most popular grilling day of the year, according to the “2020 State of the Barbecue Industry” survey by the national Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association. As many are currently planning what will be on the grill this upcoming holiday (check out our Blossman Family grilling recipes for inspiration), we recommend planning ahead on you how you will clean your gas grill. Sausage and Grilled Shrimp Kabobs A fan of surf and turf? Then this recipe is sure to please! The shrimp and sausage is sure to feel like you are cooking on the bayou in the comfort of your own backyard. Add a side of veggies and some Cajun butter to enhance all the flavors. Ingredients 12 oz. smoked sausage rope 12 oz. jumbo shrimp, tail-on, peeled and deveined 2 tsp. olive oil 2 tbsp. barbecue seasoning Directions 1. Start by rinsing the shrimp under cold water in a colander. 2. Preheat gas grill to 350°. Make sure grill grates are clean. 3. Cut sausage into about 1’’ slices (same thickness as the shrimp). 4. Pat shrimp dry with paper towels. Place shrimp in bowl. 5. Add sausage, olive oil and barbecue seasoning. Toss to combine. 6. Tuck the sausage slices in the “C” curve of the shrimp and then thread them onto skewers. 7. If using wooden skewers, soak in cold water for 30 minutes to prevent burning. Note: If you are using wooden skewers remember to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent them from catching on fire when you grill.

8. Grill over medium-high heat for about 3 minutes. Flip and grill until shrimp are opaque and cooked through. 9. Serve immediately.
