PRINCIPAL’S REPORT PARENT REQUESTS FOR GRADE PLACEMENT In last week‘s newsletter I foreshadowed that I would be inviting parents who believe that there exceptional reasons that we should take into account when determining their child‘s grade placement for 2010. Of course this begs the question – ‗What type of parent requests for grade placement carry much weight? By exceptional circumstances I mean situations such as ‗my child has had the same teacher for the past two years and I believe my child would benefit from teaching diversity’, or ‘my child does not have a wide circle of friends and they would benefit from being placed with at least one of their closer friends’, or alternatively, ‘my child has experienced serious difficulties that remain unresolved, with a particular child in their grade this year and it would be in their interests to be placed in a different grade to that child next year’, etc. Requests such as asking for a specific teacher because you believe them to be an excellent teacher, or providing me with lists of children that you want your child to be placed with or not be placed with do not carry the same weight. The reason I say this is because in the past, when we have had more generous criteria for parent requests, we have been literally flooded with them – the peak number being 254! That creates an unworkable situation for us. My best advice to parents is for you to trust the judgement of our teaching staff – we put a lot of time in to the process of grade selection to create balanced and fair grades across the school. Inevitably some children will not end up with all or even

most of their close friends or their first choice of teacher. Dealing positively with those types of situations happen to us all on a regular basis throughout our lives. It‘s worth keeping in mind. Please note that if you have a grade placement request for next year, I need to receive it in writing by Monday 23rd November.

Within a week I received another phone call from my Regional Director, but this time there was alarm in her voice. She was informing me that the Education Department had received a formal appeal against my appointment from a different applicant to the one I had met at Dromkeen. My heart sank and I was on tenterhooks for the next fortnight as the appeal process followed its course. ECHOES FROM OUR FIRST 20 During this time I was not allowed to YEARS Looking back to this time in 1989, I recall have any contact with the school council nor attend any meetings of the new staff, an emotional roller coaster time for all of whom had already been appointed myself. It was in late October that I received a telephone call from our then by the Education Department under the old seniority system. At the time only Regional Director, Dr Jean Russell, informing me that I had been selected for the principal was locally selected via a merit based selection process. That was the position of principal of Berwick a hard time for us all! Lodge P.S. – in fact to be the founding principal! I was on a school excursion to I do know that the two colleagues to whom I have referred in this anecdote Dromkeen, a popular literature excursion venue for schools, at the time. have long retired, and of course I am still here! When I hung up the phone and turned around, I guess my facial expression said FREQUENTLY ASKED it all. The first person I spoke with was a QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) colleague from another school, also on a Q. Why have you stayed here so school excursion to Dromkeen. Their long? question to me was, ―Have you just won A. I really enjoy it. tattslotto?‖ After explaining my joy to QUOTABLE QUOTE the person, much to my horror they ‘Instant communication may quite informed me that they had also been an literally be at our fingertips, but quality applicant for the Berwick Lodge P.S. position. Furthermore, they felt that they communication still needs a good teacher.’ had a Merit and Equity case for an appeal. However, given that an appeal would simply mean that the position HENRY would be readvertised, they would not be taking that course of action. My relief GROSSEK was palpable, though the experience left me rattled.
